3.30.8-12


Rama said, “You are dead” the real meaning is, as Khara said, “You have been recognized by me”.


Rama moves back a couple of steps in war 3.30.23-28

Rama saw Khara who came so near that there was no room for discharging the arrow. So Rama went back a couple of steps. Rama who was an expert in the wielding of weapons moved back quickly for getting space so that he could fix an arrow and shoot it. Another reason for moving back is suggested by the word rudhiraplutam (covered with blood). Rama loathed the contact of Khara’s blood on his own body and so he moved back. Or, for avoiding Khara, Rama moved back two or three steps so that he would get some room to shoot the arrow. When there is an emergency, due to lack of space or time, tactical retreat is acceptable even in the case of the greatest heroes.


Purpose of Indra’s visit and Sita’s taunt 3.30.28-40


The purpose of Indra’s visit was to tell Sarabhanga to take Rama to the hermitage of Sutikshna, which is near Janasthana. In order to take Rama near Khara, sages take him on the pretext of showing their own hermitages and also to deposit the special weapons in the custody of Agastya (so that he would give them to Rama).

According to the description “The gods and sages saw Rama as long as he was fighting Khara in the batte”, Rama had taken, on his own whim, fourteen thousand divine auspicious bodies. Every rakshasa of Khara’s army, therefore, saw him individually.

Or, Sita saw Rama, who had killed fourteen thousand powerful rakshasas within one and a half muhurtas, even though Indra and other gods could not face those rakshasas. Sita felt that her taunt made earlier “Rama, my father got a son-in-law who is man only in body but actually a woman in spirit” was due only to her ignorance of his might. This idea is suggested by the word tam in this sloka.

The word drstva means ‘seeing Rama, the slayer of the enemies’ as described by tair dhanumsi etc. which means ‘with those arrows Rama cut into pieces their bows, flag poles, armours, heads, arms adorned with ornaments and thigh which resembled the trunks of elephants’.Again the poet says that Lord Visnu incarnated as Rama to maintain his vow ‘I am born in every era to protect the good, to destroy the bad and to establish dharma’. Accordingly he killed the evil demons and blessed the good sages with the direct perception of his divine and auspicious form which fascinated the whole world. This is said by maharsinam sukhavaham etc.

Sita gained her real state of pure existence. The verb root bhu signifies pure existence here. Srirama was in the midst of his enemies and so he appeared almost as non-existent. So Sita also felt he was non-existent earlier. Now her Lord Rama appeared in full existence and so she felt that her existence also remanifested because it is an axiom that ‘A wife is the very soul of a man’. Sita embraced Rama firmly in order to heal his wounds with the warmth of her breasts.
