Sita questions Rama about his wielding a bow in the forest 3.9.3-30
The idea is that slaughtering of demons gradually produces the desire to kill other beings.
A kshatriya should produce fear in the rakshasas with his bow, but should not kill them. Sita says they have no authority to kill anybody. Where is the violent action of the kshatriyas and where the penance that is free from violence? This is self-contradictory. We should obey the rule of the land where we are. We are now in a hermitage. So let the rule of a grove of penance be followed here.
Ajyadhuma and Prajyadhuma 3.11. 81-85
There are two readings, ajyadhuma and Prajyadhuma. Ajyadhuma means the hermitage in which the plants were covered by the smoke of burning ghee. Prajyadhuma means the hermitage in which the plants were covered with abundant smoke. The trees at the hermitage of Agastya were covered densely with smoke. On account of the power of Agastya, this southern direction was not accessible or assailable to the cruel demons. The south is known as a direction that can be taken as a resort by good people. It is now known as the direction of Agastya.
