The Episode of Sunasepa 1.61.8-23

‘An atonement of great magnitude has been caused by the loss of the sacrificial animal and before the ritual is begun, recover the sacrificial animal or buy a man or an animal in its place to represent it and bring it here’, said Viswamitra. It may be noted that although buying or offering a human is forbidden in the scriptures, doing it for the sake of the on for the sake of dharma sacrifice or for the sake of dharma is not censured when it is indispensable to protect the interest of the family. With a desire to live Sunasepha sought the refuge of Viswamitra, his maternal uncle. ‘Let the king’s objective be fulfilled’, he said, ‘and let my transgression of dharma be forgiven’. The commentator views at this point that Sunasepha, son of Ajigrata, was taken for sacrificial offering like an animal and he got liberated by means of the prayers to Prajapati.
