English Commentaries

5.9.21-25

Kataka opines that Hanuman saw Ravana’s actual house and then searched for Pushpaka in it and on seeing the bedroom of Ravana he thought that Ravana must be there. He then dismounted from the aerial car and went towards it and saw the hall. But commentator opines that Kataka’s interpretation is wrong because Hanuman saw the entire dwellings of Ravana and then got down from the aerial car (5-12-25) as has been referred to later. The use of the word ‘Prasthitah’ is significant, as Hanuman moved towards Ravana’s dwelling, which was as wide as half a Yojana is correct.

‘Mahadhurtair devanena Parajitan’5.9.32-33

Hanuman saw the still light of the golden lamps shining with less brightness. They appeared as if they were extensively bright like the form of Ravana but appearing still and not so bright just as a defeated gambler in front of the powerful gambler (Ravana). The brightness of the glowing lamps there looked as if Lanka was burning. The word ‘Pradipta’ here indicates future fire in Lanka.
