Divine weapons given by Viswamitra to Rama and Lakshmana 1.27.20-21; 1.28.8-10

Viswamitra having said in the beginning that he would give the divine weapons to Rama, hands them with their accompanying mantras after enumeration. It is not said that he gave the weapons but that he gave the mantras. Why? Because these divine weapons were the sons of Brahma and were gods in their own right. They dwell in their own shining bodies and turn weapons only when invoked by their respective mantras. For a person to be able to use them, it is necessary to know the related mantras. Hence it is said that Viswamitra gave Rama the collection of mantras: mantragramam dadau.
Previously, at the time of handing over the Bala and Atibala knowledge, Viswamitra had said: mantragramam grhana tvam take up these mantras but the actual handing over of mantras had not taken place. At that time only the mantras related to Bala-Atibala were given.
O Raghava! Take these weapons starting with Satyavat and ending with Varana, the sons of Krsasva, having qualities of shining and changing forms at will. Take them, for you are worthy of receiving them for you are an incarnation of the Supreme Being who is the father of all these divine weapons.
The weapons that Viswamitra had acquired over a long period, after praying to different gods were all at once made available to Rama without any effort. This also shows Rama is Brahman himself because it is the sons who approach the father and the father who appoints them according to his wishes. That is why Rama does not have to strive for them. They reach him. He accepts them happily.
