‘Self’ here means the body with all its organs. Dasaratha has obtained the fruit of the organs by satisfying them in their respective spheres. For, one who gives up happiness not prohibited by dharma can be called insensate. There are five types of debts due to gods, sages, ancestors, brahmins and one’s own self. The king had discharged the debt due to the gods by the performance of a hundred sacrifices. By begetting sons he had discharged the debt due to ancestors, by giving sixteen types of offerings liberally, he had discharged the debt due to brahmins and finally the debt due to the self or soul, by enjoying the material objects in keeping with dharma.
