Response of the citizens to Rama's address 2.45.11-13
Of those citizens, there were brahmins who could be senior in three distinct ways: one, in point of learning, two, in point of age; three, in point of great strength and power acquired through severe asceticism. Their heads were shaking, as they were quite old.
Request of the elderly brahmins to the horses of Rama’s chariot 2.45.14-20
Beholding compassionately those aged brahmins speaking such pitiful words, Rama immediately got off the chariot. He walked towards the forest along with Sita and Lakshmana so that they may be able to catch up with them. But he never obliged them by turning back or halting anywhere, as it would amount to breach of promise. His compassion towards the brahmins did not allow him to move by the chariot while the brahmins were walking.
