Performance of charitable and religious duties at holy places 1.35.8-9
Rama and Lakshmana led by sage Viswamitra saw Jahnavi with her holy water being worshipped by groups of renowned sages. This suggests that although one goes to a holy place on his way with some other mission one should perform acts of charity, shraddha for gratification of the manes and others. Shankha also says, “Going to a holy place even unintentionally, one should bathe in the holy water. He is rewarded with the fruit of bathing in the holy water though not of a pilgrimage”.
Journey of the fire-worshippers (Agnihotris):
The words ‘after offering oblations to fire” etc. indicate that people vowed to the worship of fire must carry with them the Fire-god. Trikandamandana supports this view.
The Mahabharata writes: “During pilgrimage a person should perform the three sandhyas (routine worship). He should not go to a holy place without taking a bath, in an unclean condition, after taking food or in the period of impurity caused by a childbirth or death in the family”.
