ತಪಸ್ವೀ ascetic, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ: Valmiki, ತಪ: ಸ್ವಾಧ್ಯಾಯನಿರತಮ್ highly delighted in the practice of religious austerities and study of vedas, ವಾಗ್ವಿದಾಂ ವರಮ್ eloquent among the knowledgeable, ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ pre-eminent among sages, ನಾರದಮ್ Narada, ಪರಿಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ enquired.

Ascetic Valmiki enquired of Narada, pre-eminent among the sages ever engaged in the practice of religious austerities or study of the Vedas and best among the eloquent.
ಕೋನ್ವಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಂ ಲೋಕೇ ಗುಣವಾನ್ಕಶ್ಚ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ .

ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಕೃತಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ಯೋ ದೃಢವ್ರತ:৷৷1.1.2৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಸಾಮ್ಪ್ರತಮ್ now, ಗುಣವಾನ್ endowed with excellent qualities, ಕ: ನು who indeed, ವೀರ್ಯವಾಂಶ್ಚ with prowess, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: ಚ knower of righteousness, ಕೃತಜ್ಞ: ಚ grateful (who remembers even little help done by others), ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ಯ: truthful in his statements, ದೃಢವ್ರತ: firm in his vows (till such time he achieves the results), ಕ: who?

"Who in this world lives today endowed with excellent qualities, prowess, righteousness, gratitude, truthfulness and firmness in his vows?
ಚಾರಿತ್ರೇಣ ಚ ಕೋ ಯುಕ್ತಸ್ಸರ್ವಭೂತೇಷು ಕೋ ಹಿತ: .

ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ಕ: ಕಸ್ಸಮರ್ಥಶ್ಚ ಕಶ್ಚೈಕಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನ: ৷৷1.1.3৷৷


ಕ: who?, ಚಾರಿತ್ರೇಣ with good conduct, ಯುಕ್ತ: is endowed, ಕ: who?, ಸರ್ವಭೂತೇಷು for all living beings, ಹಿತ: benefactor, ಕ: who?, ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ learned man (knower of everything which is to be known), ಕ: who?, ಸಮರ್ಥ: ಚ competent (capable of doing things which cannot be done by others), ಕ: who? ಏಕಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನ: ಚ solely delightful in appearance to everyone,

Who is that one gifted with good conduct, given to the wellbeing of all living creatures, learned in the lore (knowledge of all things that is known), capable of doing things which others can not do and singularly handsome?
ಆತ್ಮವಾನ್ಕೋ ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧೋ ದ್ಯುತಿಮಾನ್ಕೋನಸೂಯಕ: .

ಕಸ್ಯ ಬಿಭ್ಯತಿ ದೇವಾಶ್ಚ ಜಾತರೋಷಸ್ಯ ಸಂಯುಗೇ ৷৷1.1.4৷৷


ಆತ್ಮವಾನ್ self-restrained, ಕ: who?, ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧ: one who has conquered anger, ದ್ಯುತಿಮಾನ್ one who is endowed with splendour, ಅನಸೂಯಕ: one who is free from envy (envy - depicting one's merits as weak points), ಕ: who?, ಜಾತರೋಷಸ್ಯ excited to wrath, ಕಸ್ಯ to whom, ಸಂಯುಗೇ in the battle, ದೇವಾ: ಚ celestial beings, devatas, ಬಿಭ್ಯತಿ are afraid of.

Who (among men) is self-restrained? Who has conquered anger? Who is endowed with brilliance and free from envy? Who is that when exited to wrath even the devatas, are afraid of (let alone foes)?
ಏತದಿಚ್ಛಾಮ್ಯಹಂ ಶ್ರೋತುಂ ಪರಂ ಕೌತೂಹಲಂ ಹಿ ಮೇ .

ಮಹರ್ಷೇ ತ್ವಂ ಸಮರ್ಥೋಸಿ ಜ್ಞಾತುಮೇವಂವಿಧಂ ನರಮ್ ৷৷1.1.5৷৷


ಏತತ್ this, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಶ್ರೋತುಮ್ to listen, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ am desirous, ಮೇ my, ಕೌತೂಹಲಮ್ curiosity, ಪರಂ ಹಿ is great, ಮಹರ್ಷೇ O! Maharshi, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಏವಂವಿಧಮ್ of such (virtues), ನರಮ್ man, ಜ್ಞಾತುಮ್ to know, ಸಮರ್ಥ: ಅಸಿ are competent.

O Maharshi, I intend to hear about such a man whom you are able to place? Indeed great is my curiosity".
ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚೈತತ್ಿತ್ರಲೋಕಜ್ಞೋ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇರ್ನಾರದೋ ವಚ: .

ತ್ರಿಲೋಕಜ್ಞ: cognizant of three worlds, ನಾರದ: Narada, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇ: Valmiki's, ಏತತ್ ವಚ: these words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಚ having heard, ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಮ್ ಇತಿ "Listen to me", ಚಾಮನ್ತ್ತ್ರ್ಯ ಚ having invited, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟ: was delighted, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Invited by Valmiki to take his seat Narada, knower of the three worlds heard him and said with delight "listen to me!". And thus spoke.
ಬಹವೋ ದುರ್ಲಭಾಶ್ಚೈವ ಯೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕೀರ್ತಿತಾ ಗುಣಾ: .

ಮುನೇ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ಯಹಂ ಬುದ್ಧ್ವಾ ತೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಶ್ಶ್ರೂಯತಾನ್ನರ: ৷৷1.1.7৷৷


ಮುನೇ O!Sage Valmiki, ಬಹವ: many, ದುರ್ಲಭಾ: ಚ ಏವ rare indeed are the ordinary people endowed with such qualities, ಯೇ ಗುಣಾ: those qualities, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಕೀರ್ತಿತಾ: described, ತೈ: with those qualities, ಯುಕ್ತ: endowed with, ನರ: man, ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಮ್ listen, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಬುದ್ಧ್ವಾ having ascertained, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall tell you.

"O sage rare indeed are men endowed with the many qualities you have described. I ascertained one. Listen carefully.
ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುವಂಶಪ್ರಭವೋ ರಾಮೋ ನಾಮ ಜನೈಶ್ಶ್ರುತ: .

ನಿಯತಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯೋ ದ್ಯುತಿಮಾನ್ಧೃತಿಮಾನ್ ವಶೀ ৷৷1.1.8৷৷


ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುವಂಶಪ್ರಭವ: born in the race of king Ikshvaku, ರಾಮ: ನಾಮ known as Rama (one who delights others), ಜನೈ: by people, ಶ್ರುತ: is heard, ನಿಯತಾತ್ಮಾ steady natured (meaning thereby immutable form), ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯ: incomprehensible prowess, ದ್ಯುತಿಮಾನ್ self-effulgent, ಧೃತಿಮಾನ್ self-commanding, ವಶೀ subjecting the senses (subjecting the entire world under his control).

People have heard his name as Rama, who was born in the race of king Ikshvaku,
having steady nature, possessing incomprehensible prowess, self-effulgent, self-commanding and subjecting senses under his control.
ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ನೀತಿಮಾನ್ವಾಗ್ಮೀ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣ: .

ವಿಪುಲಾಂಸೋ ಮಹಾಬಾಹು: ಕಮ್ಬುಗ್ರೀವೋ ಮಹಾಹನು: ৷৷1.1.9৷৷


ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ great intellectual, ನೀತಿಮಾನ್ learned in ethical (statecraft) philosophy, ವಾಗ್ಮೀ proficient in speeches, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ possessing vast auspiciousness, ಶತ್ರುನಿಬರ್ಹಣ: destroyer of foes (sins), ವಿಪುಲಾಂಸ: broad shouldered, ಮಹಾಬಾಹು: strong-armed, ಕಮ್ಬುಗ್ರೀವ: possessing conch-shaped neck, ಮಹಾಹನು: having prominent and strong cheeks.

He (Sri Rama) is a great intellectual, adherent to rules, eloquent, handsome, destroyer of foes (sins), broad-shouldered, strong-armed, having conch-shaped neck and prominent cheeks.
ಮಹೋರಸ್ಕೋ ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸೋ ಗೂಢಜತ್ರುರರಿನ್ದಮಃ .

ಆಜಾನುಬಾಹುಸ್ಸುಶಿರಾಸ್ಸುಲಲಾಟಸ್ಸುವಿಕ್ರಮಃ ৷৷1.1.10৷৷


ಮಹೋರಸ್ಕ: having broad chest, ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸಃ armed with a great bow (meaning thereby having strong body to carry a bow), ಗೂಢಜತ್ರುಃ has fleshy collar bones, ಅರಿನ್ದಮಃ is destroyer of foes (sins), ಆಜಾನುಬಾಹು: has arms extending upto knees, ಸುಶಿರಾಃ head with noble qualities, ಸುಲಲಾಟಃ has a large and beautiful forehead, ಸುವಿಕ್ರಮಃ is endowed with mighty prowess.

Possessing a broad chest, armed with a great bow, with fleshy collar bones, knee-long arms, a noble head, a graceful forehead and great prowess, he is the destroyer of foes (sins).
ಸಮಸ್ಸಮವಿಭಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗಸ್ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧವರ್ಣ: ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ .

ಪೀನವಕ್ಷಾ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವಾನ್ ಶುಭಲಕ್ಷಣಃ ৷৷ 1.1.11৷৷


ಸಮಃ neither too tall nor too short, ಸಮವಿಭಕ್ತಾಙ್ಗ: has well-proportioned limbs, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧವರ್ಣಃ has shining complexion, ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ is mighty and powerful, ಪೀನವಕ್ಷಾ: strong well-developed chest, ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಃ has expansive eyes, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀವಾನ್ lustrous body, ಶುಭಲಕ್ಷಣಃ has auspicious qualities (according to science of palmistry).

Mighty and powerful, he has a well-proportioned body, neither tall nor short, shining complexion, well-developed chest, large eyes, lustrous body and good qualities.
ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಸ್ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಂ ಚ ಹಿತೇ ರತಃ .

ಯಶಸ್ವೀ ಜ್ಞಾನಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಶ್ಶುಚಿರ್ವಶ್ಯಸ್ಸಮಾಧಿಮಾನ್ ৷৷1.1.12৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: knower of duties (of protecting those who take refuge in him) of life, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧ: firm in his vows, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್ for his subjects, ಹಿತೇ doing good, ರತಃ intent on, ಯಶಸ್ವೀ renowned, ಜ್ಞಾನಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ omniscient, ಶುಚಿಃ pure and devout, ವಶ್ಯಃ obedient to elders (or accessible to those who are dependent on him), ಸಮಾಧಿಮಾನ್ meditating on the means of protecting those who took refuge in him.

Pious, firm in his vows, he is ever intent on doing good to his subjects. He is, illustrious, wise, and pure at heart. He is obedient to elders (or accessible to those who are dependent on him) and ever meditating (on the means of protecting those who take refuge in him).
ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಸಮಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಧಾತಾ ರಿಪುನಿಷೂದನಃ .

ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ ಜೀವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಯ ಪರಿರಕ್ಷಿತಾ ৷৷1.1.13৷৷


ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಸಮಃ equal to Brahma, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ surpassed the entire world in auspiciousness, ಧಾತಾ sustainer of this entire world, ರಿಪುನಿಷೂದನಃ destroyer of enemies, ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ protector, ಜೀವಲೋಕಸ್ಯ of all living beings, ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಯ of code of morals, ಪರಿರಕ್ಷಿತಾ protector.

Auspicious like Brahma, Sri Rama is the sustainer of this world, destroyer of enemies and protector of all living beings and of the moral code.
ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ ಸ್ವಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಯ ಸ್ವಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ .

ವೇದವೇದಾಙ್ಗತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞೋ ಧನುರ್ವೇದೇ ಚ ನಿಷ್ಠಿತಃ ৷৷1.1.14৷৷


ಸ್ವಸ್ಯ of his own, ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಯ duties of a king, ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ protector, ಸ್ವಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ of his own subjects, ರಕ್ಷಿತಾ protector, ವೇದವೇದಾಙ್ಗತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞ: knowledgeable in the true nature of vedas and vedangas, ಧನುರ್ವೇದೇ ಚ in military science, one of the upavedas (a great archer), ನಿಷ್ಠಿತ: accomplished.

He has performed the duties of a king and protected his subjects. knowledgeable in the true nature of the Vedas he is accomplished in military science (he is a great archer).
ಸರ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞಸ್ಸ್ಮೃತಿಮಾನ್ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್ .

ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಸ್ಸಾಧುರದೀನಾತ್ಮಾ ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ ৷৷1.1.15৷৷


ಸರ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞ: knower of the true meaning of all scriptures, ಸ್ಮೃತಿಮಾನ್ has infalliable retentive memory, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್ is talented (possessing brightness of conception), ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪ್ರಿಯಃ is beloved of all people, ಸಾಧು: well-disposed and courteous (even towards those who have done harm), ಅದೀನಾತ್ಮಾ unperturbed mind (even in times of extreme grief), ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ has dicrimination (is circumspect in doing right things in right time).

Sri Rama knows the true meaning of all scriptures and has a retentive memory. He is talented (possessing brightness of conception). He is beloved and well-disposed towards all people (and courteous even towards those who have done him harm). He has an unperturbed mind (even in times of extreme grief) and is circumspect (in doing right things at the right time).
ಸರ್ವದಾಭಿಗತಸ್ಸದ್ಭಿಸ್ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಸಿನ್ಧುಭಿಃ .

ಆರ್ಯಸ್ಸರ್ವಸಮಶ್ಚೈವ ಸದೈಕಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಃ ৷৷1.1.16৷৷


ಸಮುದ್ರಃ sea, ಸಿನ್ಧುಭಿಃ the rivers, ಇವ like, ಸದ್ಭಿಃ good persons, ಸರ್ವದಾ ever, ಅಭಿಗತಃ is approachable, ಆರ್ಯಃ man of virtue, ಸರ್ವಸಮಃ ಚ ಏವ having equitable dispostition towards all, ಸದೈಕಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಃ always has delightful countenance.

Sri Rama, like sea to rivers, is accessible to men of virtue and has equal disposition towards all. He always has a pleasing appearance.
ಸ ಚ ಸರ್ವಗುಣೋಪೇತ: ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನ: .

ಸಮುದ್ರ ಇವ ಗಾಮ್ಭೀರ್ಯೇ ಧೈರ್ಯೇಣ ಹಿಮವಾನಿವ ৷৷1.1.17৷৷


ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನ: he, who is enhancing the joys of Kausalya, ಸ: ಚ he also, ಸರ್ವಗುಣೋಪೇತ: endowed with all virtues, ಗಾಮ್ಭೀರ್ಯೇ in depth of his thoughts, ಸಮುದ್ರ: ಇವ like a sea, ಧೈರ್ಯೇಣ in fortitude, ಹಿಮವಾನ್ ಇವ like Himavat mountain.

Sri Rama, bestowed with all virtues, enhanced the joys of Kausalya, He is like the sea in deportment and like Himavant in fortitude.
ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ಸದೃಶೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇ ಸೋಮವತ್ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನ: .

ಕಾಲಾಗ್ನಿಸದೃಶ: ಕ್ರೋಧೇ ಕ್ಷಮಯಾ ಪೃಥಿವೀಸಮ: ৷৷1.1.18৷৷

ಧನದೇನ ಸಮಸ್ತ್ಯಾಗೇ ಸತ್ಯೇ ಧರ್ಮ ಇವಾಪರ: .


ವೀರ್ಯೇ In prowess, ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ಸದೃಶ: similar to visnu, ಸೋಮವತ್ in appearance as is full Moon, ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನ: pleasing to the sight, ಕ್ರೋಧೇ in anger, ಕಾಲಾಗ್ನಿಸದೃಶ: like destructive fire at the end of the world, ಕ್ಷಮಯಾ in patience, ಪೃಥಿವೀಸಮ: equal to earth, ತ್ಯಾಗೇ in charity, ಧನದೇನ ಸಮ: like Kubera, ಸತ್ಯೇ in truth, ಅಪರ: ಧರ್ಮ: ಇವ like another god of justice.

Sri Rama is like Visnu in prowess, the Moon in pleasing appearance, the all-consuming fire in anger, the earth in patience, Kubera in chartiy and the Sun in steadfastness.
ತಮೇವಂ ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ ৷৷1.1.19৷৷

ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಗುಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ದಶರಥಸ್ಸುತಮ್ . 1-1-19-

ಪ್ರಕೃತೀನಾಂ ಹಿತೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ ৷৷1.1.20৷৷

ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ ಸಂಯೋಕ್ತುಮೈಚ್ಛತ್ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ ಮಹೀಪತಿ: . 1-1-20-


ಮಹೀಪತಿ: ದಶರಥ: lord of earth, Dasaratha, ಏವಂ ಗುಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ him who was possessing all such good qualities, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ him who had not a vain prowess, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಗುಣೈ: with excellent virtues, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ beloved, ಪ್ರಕೃತೀನಾಮ್ for his subjects, ಹಿತೈ: with good deeds, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಮ್ eldest, ಸುತಮ್ son, ತಂ ರಾಮಮ್ Sri Rama, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ ever intent on the welfare of the people, ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ with affection, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇನ heir-apparent, ಸಂಯೋಕ್ತುಮ್ to install, ಐಚ್ಛತ್ wished.

With a desire to promote the welfare of the people king Dasaratha decided to install Sri Rama, his eldest and affectionate son as heir (apparent) who was bestowed with all excellent qualities and true prowess, beloved of the people he was ever intent in the welfare of the people.
ತಸ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಕಸಮ್ಭಾರಾನ್ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಥ ಕೈಕಯೀ ৷৷1.1.21৷৷

ಅಥ thereafter, ತಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಸಮ್ಭಾರಾನ್ preparations for the installation, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ previously, ದತ್ತವರಾ was promised with boons, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ದೇವೀ queen,
ಕೈಕಯೀ Kaikeyi, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಿವಾಸನಮ್ exile, ಭರತಸ್ಯ of Bharata, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ enthronement, ವರಮ್ boon, ಏನಮ್ ಅಯಾಚತ begged of Dasaratha.

Thereafter, having seen the preparations for installation of Rama, queen Kaikeyi who had been promised earlier with boons by Dasaratha demanded of him the exile of Rama and enthronement of Bharata.

ಸ: ದಶರಥ: Dasaratha, ಸತ್ಯವಚನಾತ್ due to being truthful to his word, ಧರ್ಮಪಾಶೇನ by the bond of duty, ಸಂಯತ: restrained, ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಸುತಮ್ beloved son, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ವಿವಾಸಯಾಮಾಸ sent (to the forest).

Dasaratha, true to his word and restrained by the bond of duty, sent his beloved son Rama to the forest.
ಸ ಜಗಾಮ ವನಂ ವೀರ: ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಮನುಪಾಲಯನ್.

ಪಿತುರ್ವಚನನಿರ್ದೇಶಾತ್ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ: ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾರಣಾತ್ ৷৷1.1.24৷৷


ವೀರ: ಸ: that mighty Sri Rama, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ: Kaikeyi's, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾರಣಾತ್ with a view to gratify, ಪಿತು: father's, ವಚನನಿರ್ದೇಶಾತ್ by the word of command, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಮ್ his promise, ಅನುಪಾಲಯನ್ while obeying, ವನಮ್ forest, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Mighty Sri Rama inorder to please Kaikeyi and obey the word of command of his father, went to the forest and help the king to keep his promise to Kaikeyi.
ತಂ ವ್ರಜನ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಿಯೋ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋನುಜಗಾಮ ಹ .

ವಿನಯಸಮ್ಪನ್ನ: endowed with modesty, ಭ್ರಾತು: for brother Rama, ದಯಿತ: beloved, ಪ್ರಿಯ: ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother with natural affection, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನ: one who enhances the joy of Sumitra, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ: Lakshmana, ಸೌಭ್ರಾತ್ರಮ್ affectionate brotherhood, ಅನುದರ್ಶಯನ್ showing, ವ್ರಜನ್ತಮ್ departing to the forest, ತಂ ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ his brother Rama, ಸ್ನೇಹಾತ್ out of affection, ಅನುಜಗಾಮ ಹ followed.

Lakshmana beloved brother to Rama is drawn towards him. Endowed with modesty he is an enhancer of the joy of his mother Sumitra. Displaying his fraternal love, he followed Rama who was departing to the forest.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ for Rama, ದಯಿತಾ beloved, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ಪ್ರಾಣಸಮಾ equal to his vital breath, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಹಿತಾ doing fit and proper acts beneficial to him, ಜನಕಸ್ಯ king Janaka's, ಕುಲೇ in the race, ಜಾತಾ born, ನಿರ್ಮಿತಾ created, ದೇವಮಾಯೇವ like Maya Mohini, the assumed form of visnuhnu, ಸರ್ವಲಕ್ಷಣಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಾ endowed with all auspicious characteristics, ನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ among women, ಉತ್ತಮಾ the foremost, ವಧೂ: daughter-in-law (of Dasaratha), ಸೀತಾಪಿ Sita also, ರೋಹಿಣೀ Rohini, (one of the several daughters of Daksha and consort of moon) ಶಶಿನಮ್ ಯಥಾ like moon, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನುಗತಾ followed.

Born in the race of Janaka and daughter-in-law of Dasaratha, Sita, beloved spouse of Rama is like his vital breath always desired the wellbeing of Rama she followed him like Rohini, the Moon. Endowed with all virtues she is the foremost woman.

ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರೇ ಸೂತಂ ಗಙ್ಗಾಕೂಲೇ ವ್ಯಸರ್ಜಯತ್ .

ಗುಹೇನ ಸಹಿತೋ ರಾಮೋ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ ಸೀತಯಾ .

The citizens and Dasaratha followed Rama for a long distance. Rama of righteous nature having approached Guha, king of nishadas, at Shrungiberapura sent back charioteer Sumantra and Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana crossed river Ganga.

ದೇವಗನ್ಧರ್ವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಾಸ್ತತ್ರ ತೇ ನ್ಯವಸನ್ ಸುಖಮ್ .

Moving from one forest to another and crossing deep and wide rivers with plenty of waters, reached the Chitrakuta mountain by the command of sage Bharadwaja. They raised a hut made of leaves in the forest located in Chitrakuta mountain. and dwelt there happily resembling devas and gandharvas.
ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಂ ಗತೇ ರಾಮೇ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾತುರಸ್ತಥಾ ৷৷1.1.32৷৷

ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ಜಗಾಮ ವಿಲಪನ್ಸುತಮ್ .


ತಥಾ in that way, ರಾಮೇ when Rama, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಮ್ ಗತೇ had set out to Chitrakuta, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾತುರ: stricken by the grief over the separation from his son, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥ: king Dasaratha, ಸುತಮ್ about his son, ವಿಲಪನ್ wailing, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heavens, ಜಗಾಮ went.

When Rama had set out to Chitrakuta, king Dasaratha, stricken by the grief over the separation from his son and mourning over him departed to heavens.
ಮೃತೇ ತು ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಭರತೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಪ್ರಮುಖೈರ್ದ್ವಿಜೈ: ৷৷ 1.1.33৷৷

ನಿಯುಜ್ಯಮಾನೋ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ನೈಚ್ಛದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಮಹಾಬಲ:.


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ when he (Dasaratha), ಮೃತೇ had died, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಪ್ರಮುಖೈ: ದ್ವಿಜೈ: with Vasishta and other brahmins, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ to rule the kingdom, ನಿಯುಜ್ಯಮಾನ: had been ordered, ಮಹಾಬಲ: mighty, ಭರತ: ತು Bharata, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ನೈಚ್ಛತ್ did not desire to rule .

After Dasaratha had passed away, mighty Bharata did not desire to rule the kingdom against the orders by Vasishta and other brahmins.
ಸ ಜಗಾಮ ವನಂ ವೀರೋ ರಾಮಪಾದಪ್ರಸಾದಕ: ৷৷ 1.1.34 ৷৷


ವೀರ: The brave person who had conquered envy and hatred, ರಾಮಪಾದಪ್ರಸಾದಕ: in order to propitiate Rama's feet, ಸ he, ವನಂ forest, ಜಗಾಮ went.

The brave Bharata, who had conquered envy and hatred went to the forest in order to worship Rama's feet.
ಗತ್ವಾ ತು ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ .

ಅಯಾಚದ್ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ರಾಮಮಾರ್ಯಭಾವಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ: ৷৷1.1.35৷৷

ತ್ವಮೇವ ರಾಜಾ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ ಇತಿ ರಾಮಂ ವಚೋಬ್ರವೀತ್ .


ಆರ್ಯಭಾವಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ: worshipped with reverence, ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ highly respectable, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ truthful chivalry, ಗತ್ವಾ having reached, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ರಾಮಮ್ brother Rama, ಅಯಾಚತ್ implored.
ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: knower of righteousness, ತ್ವಮೇವ you alone, ರಾಜಾ ಇತಿ should be the king, ರಾಮಮ್ addressing Rama, ವಚ: words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Bharata reached Rama, so pleasing venerable, truthful and chivalrous, worshipped him with reverence and implored.
Bharata addressing Rama said, 'You are knower of righteousness. You alone should be the king (meaning that when the elder brother is alive, the younger brother is prohibited from ruling the kingdom)'.
ರಾಮೋಪಿ ಪರಮೋದಾರಸ್ಸುಮುಖಸ್ಸುಮಹಾಯಶಾ: .

ನ ಚೈಚ್ಛತ್ಪಿತುರಾದೇಶಾದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ರಾಮೋ ಮಹಾಬಲ: ৷৷1.1.36৷৷


ರಾಮೋಪಿ eventhough he delights everybody, ಪರಮೋದಾರೋಪಿ eventhough exceedingly generous (in fulfilling the desires like absorption in divinity etc, of those who take refuge in him), ಸುಮುಖೋಪಿ eventhough having cheerful countenance (when somebody approaches him for favours), ರಾಮ Rama, ಸುಮಹಾಯಶಾ: greatly renowned (because of dispensing charities), ಮಹಾಬಲ: highly capable (in fulfilling the desires of others), ಪಿತು: father's, ಆದೇಶಾತ್ by command, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ನೈಚ್ಛತ್ refused to accept.

Although a source of universal delight, although exceedingly generous and of cheerful countenance, highly renowned and capable Rama refused to accept the kingdom in accordance with the command of his father.
ಪಾದುಕೇ ಚಾಸ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ನ್ಯಾಸಂ ದತ್ವಾ ಪುನ:ಪುನ: .

ನಿವರ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ ತತೋ ಭರತಂ ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜ: ৷৷1.1.37৷৷


ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜ: Bharata's elder brother, Rama, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ to rule the kingdom, ಅಸ್ಯ to him, ಪಾದುಕೇ his own sandals, ನ್ಯಾಸಮ್ in deposit, as symbol of authority, ದತ್ವಾ having given, ತತ: thereafter, ಪುನ:ಪುನ: repeatedly, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ನಿವರ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ persuaded him to return to the capital.

Having handed over his sandals to Bharata as symbol of authority for ruling the kingdom, Rama persuaded him again and again to return to the capital.
ಸ ಕಾಮಮನವಾಪ್ಯೈವ ರಾಮಪಾದಾವುಪಸ್ಪೃಶನ್ ৷৷1.1.38৷৷

ನನ್ದಿಗ್ರಾಮೇಕರೋದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ರಾಮಾಗಮನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ .


ಸ: Bharata, ಕಾಮಮ್ desire, ಅನವಾಪ್ಯೈವ without fulfilling only, ರಾಮಪಾದೌ sandals of Rama, ಉಪಸ್ಪೃಶನ್ touching with reverence, ರಾಮಾಗಮನಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಯಾ eagerly awaiting the return of Rama, ನನ್ದಿಗ್ರಾಮೇ in Nandigrama, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ ಅಕರೋತ್ ruled the kingdom.

Disaaponted in his mission to take Rama back, Bharata worshipped the sandals of Rama and ruled the kingdom from Nandigrama, awaiting his return.
ಗತೇ ತು ಭರತೇ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೋ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: ৷৷1.1.39৷৷

ರಾಮಸ್ತು ಪುನರಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ ನಾಗರಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ .

ತತ್ರಾಗಮನಮೇಕಾಗ್ರೋ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಹ ৷৷1.1.40৷৷


ಭರತೇ when Bharata, ಗತೇ ತು had gone, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ one possessing brightness, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧ: steadfast in his vows, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: conquered the senses, ರಾಮ: ತು Rama, ನಾಗರಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ ಚ of city-dwelling citizens', ಪುನ: again, ತತ್ರ in that Chitrakuta mountain, ಆಗಮನಮ್ arrival, ಆಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ perceiving, ಏಕಾಗ್ರ: with undivided concentration of mind and resoluteness (to fulfill the promise given to his father), ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ Dandaka forest, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಹ entered.

When Bharata departed, Sri Rama, a man of good fortune and steadfast in vows one who had conquered under control perceiving that the citizens from Ayodhya would arrive there, entered the Dandaka forest with single minded determination (so that there would not be breach of his promise).
ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ತು ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಂ ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ .

ವಿರಾಧಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಂ ಹತ್ವಾ ಶರಭಙ್ಗಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಹ ৷৷1.1.41৷৷

ಸುತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಂ ಚಾಪ್ಯಗಸ್ತ್ಯಂ ಚ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಭ್ರಾತರಂ ತಥಾ .


ರಾಜೀವಲೋಚನಃ lotus-eyed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ dreary forest (Dandakaranya) ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ ತು having entered, ವಿರಾಧಮ್ Viradha, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಮ್ Rakshasa, ಹತ್ವಾ after slaying, ಶರಭಙ್ಗಮ್ sage Sarabhanga, ಸುತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣಂ ಚ also sage Sutikshna, ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಂ ಚ sage Agastya, ತಥಾ and, ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಚ brother of
sage Agastya, ದದರ್ಶ ಹ saw.

Having entered the dense forest Dandaka, Rama slew the demon Viradha and saw the sages Sarabhanga, Sutikshna and Agastya with his brother.
ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯವಚನಾಚ್ಚೈವ ಜಗ್ರಾಹೈನ್ದ್ರಂ ಶರಾಸನಮ್ ৷৷1.1.42৷৷

ಖಡ್ಗಂ ಚ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಸ್ತೂಣೀ ಚಾಕ್ಷಯಸಾಯಕೌ .


ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯವಚನಾತ್ ಚ ಏವ as directed by sage Agastya, ಐನ್ದ್ರಮ್ given by Indra, ಶರಾಸನಮ್ bow, ಖಡ್ಗಂ ಚ a sword, ಅಕ್ಷಯಸಾಯಕೌ inexhaustible arrows, ತೂಣೀ ಚ and quivers, ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಃ extremely delighted, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ received.

As directed by sage Agastya, Rama received with extreme delight a bow, a sword and quivers with inexhaustible arrows, given by Indra to Agastya (to be passed on to
Rama).
ವಸತಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವನೇ ವನಚರೈಸ್ಸಹ .

ಋಷಯೋಭ್ಯಾಗಮನ್ಸರ್ವೇ ವಧಾಯಾಸುರರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ ৷৷1.1.43৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ when Rama, ವನೇ in that forest (in the hermitage of sage Sarabhanga), ವಸತ: was dwelling, ಸರ್ವೇ ಋಷಯ: all the ascetics, ವನಚರೈಃ ಸಹ along with those inhabiting the forest, ಅಸುರರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ asuras and rakshasas (seizing upon the lives), ವಧಾಯ for destruction, ಅಭ್ಯಾಗಮನ್ approached.

While Rama was dwelling in the forest (in the hermitage of sage Sarabhanga), all the ascetics along with others (sages) inhabiting the forest approached Rama requesting for the destruction of the asuras and rakshasas seizing upon their lives.
ಸ ತೇಷಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಶುಶ್ರಾವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ತಥಾ ವನೇ ৷৷1.1.44৷৷

ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾತಶ್ಚ ರಾಮೇಣ ವಧಸ್ಸಂಯತಿ ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ .

ಋಷೀಣಾಮಗ್ನಿಕಲ್ಪಾನಾಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ ৷৷1.1.45৷৷


ಸ: Rama, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಮ್ for rakshsas (abode of), ವನೇ in that forest, ತೇಷಾಂ to those asetics, ತಥಾ that prayer, ಪ್ರತಿಶುಶ್ರಾವ assented, ಋಷೀಣಾಮ್ of the ascetics, ಅಗ್ನಿಕಲ್ಪಾನಾಮ್ in lustre resembling flaming fire, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ inhabitants of Dandakaranya, ಸಂಯತಿ in the battle, ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ of rakshasas, ವಧಶ್ಚ slaying also, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾತಃ was promised.

Rama promised those ascetics, who resembled flaming fire in lustre living in Dandakaranya inhabited by rakshasas to slay them.
ತೇನ ತತ್ರೈವ ವಸತಾ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿವಾಸಿನೀ .

ವಿರೂಪಿತಾ ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಕಾಮರೂಪಿಣೀ ৷৷1.1.46৷৷


ತತ್ರೈವ ವಸತಾ while living in that place itself, ತೇನ by Rama, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿವಾಸಿನೀ resident of Janasthana area (of Dandakaranya), ಕಾಮರೂಪಿಣೀ capable of assuming any form at will, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀ ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾ female demon Surpanakha, ವಿರೂಪಿತಾ was deformed.

During his stay there a demon called Surpanakha living in Janasthana (resting place for the army of Ravana in Dandakaranya) and capable of assuming any form at will was rendered deformed by Lakshmana.
ತತಶ್ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾವಾಕ್ಯಾದುದ್ಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ಸರ್ವರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನ್ .

ಖರಂ ತ್ರಿಶಿರಸಂ ಚೈವ ದೂಷಣಂ ಚೈವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಮ್ ৷৷1.1.47৷৷

ತತಃ thereafter, ಶೂರ್ಪಣಖಾವಾಕ್ಯಾತ್ (instigated) by the words of Surpanakha, ಉದ್ಯುಕ್ತಾನ್ ready for a battle, ಸರ್ವರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನ್ all the rakshasas, ಖರಮ್ ಏವ Khara only, ತ್ರಿಶಿರಸಂ ಚ Trisira also, ದೂಷಣಮ್ Dushana, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಂ ಚ ಏವ rakshasa also, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಪದಾನುಗಾನ್ ಚ ಏವ followers also, ರಾಮ: Rama, ವನೇ in the forest, ನಿಜಘಾನ killed.

Thereafter Rama killed in the fight all the rakshasas, Khara, Trisira, and Dushana with their followers in a battle who were instigated by Surpanakha's words.
ವನೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಿವಸತಾ ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ ৷৷1.1.48৷৷

ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ನಿಹತಾನ್ಯಾಸನ್ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಚತುರ್ದಶ .


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ವನೇ in that forest, ನಿವಸತಾ by Rama who was living, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿವಾಸಿನಾಮ್ of the inhabitants of Janasthana, ರಕ್ಷಸಾಮ್ of rakshasas, ಚತುರ್ದಶಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ fourteen thousand of them, ನಿಹತಾನಿ ಆಸನ್ were killed.

During his stay in that forest Rama killed fourteen thousand rakshasas who were inhabitants of Janasthana.

ತತ: thereafter, ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಜ್ಞಾತಿವಧಮ್ slaughter of fellow rakshasas, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಕ್ರೋಧಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ became violent with anger, ಮಾರೀಚಂ ನಾಮ named Maricha, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಮ್ rakshasa, ಸಹಾಯಮ್ help, ವರಯಾಮಾಸ sought for.

Having heard the slaughter of fellow rakshasa, Ravana became violent with anger and sought the help of a rakshasa named Maricha.
ವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಸ್ಸುಬಹುಶೋ ಮಾರೀಚೇನ ಸ ರಾವಣಃ ৷৷1.1.50৷৷

ನ ವಿರೋಧೋ ಬಲವತಾ ಕ್ಷಮೋ ರಾವಣ ತೇನ ತೇ .


"ರಾವಣ O Ravana!, ಬಲವತಾ with that mighty and powerful (because of slaying of Khara etc. rakshasas), ತೇನ with that Rama, ವಿರೋಧ: hostilities, ತೇ to you, ನ ಕ್ಷಮ: is not proper" in this way, ಮಾರೀಚೇನ by Maricha, ಸುಬಹುಶ: well in many ways, ವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ dissuaded, ಸ: ರಾವಣ: that Ravana.

Maricha repeatedly dissuaded him saying, 'O Ravana! It is not proper for you to enter into hostility with the mighty and powerful Rama'.
ಅನಾದೃತ್ಯ ತು ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ರಾವಣ: ಕಾಲಚೋದಿತ: ৷৷1.1.51৷৷

ಜಗಾಮ ಸಹ ಮಾರೀಚಸ್ತಸ್ಯಾಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ತದಾ .


ರಾವಣಃ Ravana, ಕಾಲಚೋದಿತಃ incited by destiny, ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಅನಾದೃತ್ಯ ತು disregarding, ಸಹಮಾರೀಚಃ followed by Maricha, ತಸ್ಯ ಆಶ್ರಮಪದಮ್ towards his hermitage, ತದಾ then, ಜಗಾಮ went.

Disregarding his words Ravana incited by fate left for the hermitage of Rama along with Maricha.
ತೇನ ಮಾಯಾವಿನಾ ದೂರಮಪವಾಹ್ಯ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜೌ ৷৷1.1.52৷৷

ಜಹಾರ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಗೃಧ್ರಂ ಹತ್ವಾ ಜಟಾಯುಷಮ್ .


ಮಾಯಾವಿನಾ by the deceitful, ತೇನ by him (Maricha), ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜೌ princes (Rama and Lakshmana), ದೂರಮ್ far away, ಅಪವಾಹ್ಯ drawing them away, ಜಟಾಯುಷಮ್ Jatayu, ಗೃಧ್ರಮ್ vulture, ಹತ್ವಾ having killed, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ wife, Sita, ಜಹಾರ carried away.

He with the help of deceitful Maricha drew the princes (Rama and Lakshmana) far away from their hermitage abducted Sita the wife of Rama and slaughtered vulture Jatayu,

Having seen and heard from the eagle Jatayu struck down by Ravana that Sita had been abducted Rama bewailed, choked with tears his senses dulled by distress.

Then he performed in the midst of tears the funeral rites of the vulture Jatayu. Wandering in search of Sita, he beheld a rakshasa named Kabandha who was dreadful, in deformed in appearance.

Mighty-armed Rama, having killed Kabandha, consigned his body to flames. While leaving for heavens he informed him saying, 'O Raghava, there is a female ascetic in Sabara community, performing religious duties and proficient in practising austerities. You may visit her'.

Rama son of Dasaratha, destroyer of enemies and possessing great splendour approached Sabari who duly worshipped him৷৷
ಪಮ್ಪಾತೀರೇ ಹನುಮತಾ ಸಙ್ಗತೋ ವಾನರೇಣ ಹ ৷৷1.1.58৷৷

ಹನುಮದ್ವಚನಾಚ್ಚೈವ ಸುಗ್ರೀವೇಣ ಸಮಾಗತ: .


ಪಮ್ಪಾತೀರೇ on the bank of Pampa, ವಾನರೇಣ with a monkey, ಹನುಮತಾ named Hanuman, ಸಙ್ಗತ: ಹ was united, ಹನುಮದ್ವಚನಾತ್ on the advice of Hanuman, ಸುಗ್ರೀವೇಣ ಚೈವ by Sugriva also, ಸಮಾಗತ: was united.

On the bank of Pampa he met a monkey named Hanuman on whose advice he made friendship with Sugriva.
ಸುಗ್ರೀವಾಯ ಚ ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ಶಂಸದ್ರಾಮೋ ಮಹಾಬಲ: ৷৷1.1.59৷৷

ಆದಿತಸ್ತದ್ಯಥಾವೃತ್ತಂ ಸೀತಾಯಾಶ್ಚ ವಿಶೇಷತ: .

Mighty Rama related to Sugriva all that had happened right from the beginning, more importantly Sita's abduction and also to Hanuman.

ಚಕಾರ ಸಖ್ಯಂ ರಾಮೇಣ ಪ್ರೀತಶ್ಚೈವಾಗ್ನಿಸಾಕ್ಷಿಕಮ್ .


ವಾನರ: monkey, ಸುಗ್ರೀವ: Sugriva, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ತತ್ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all that story, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಪ್ರೀತ: pleased, ಅಗ್ನಿಸಾಕ್ಷಿಕಂ ಚೈವ witnessed by Agni, god of fire, ರಾಮೇಣ with Rama, ಸಖ್ಯಂ ಚಕಾರ, made a pact of friendship.

Hearing everything that story from Rama, Sugriva was very pleased and made a pact with Rama in the presence of Agni as witness.

ರಾಮಾಯಾವೇದಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಣಯಾದ್ದು:ಖಿತೇನ ಚ .


ತತ: thereafter, ದು:ಖಿತೇನ by him who was filled with sorrow, ವಾನರರಾಜೇನ by the king of
monkeys, Sugriva, ವೈರಾನುಕಥನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ his story about hostilities (with Vali), ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entirely, ಪ್ರಣಯಾತ್ out of friendship, ಆವೇದಿತಮ್ was communicated.

Thereafter Sugriva, king of monkeys filled with sorrow narrated to Rama out of friendship the entire account of his hostilities (with Vali).
ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾತಂ ಚ ರಾಮೇಣ ತದಾ ವಾಲಿವಧಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ৷৷1.1.62৷৷

ವಾಲಿನಶ್ಚ ಬಲಂ ತತ್ರ ಕಥಯಾಮಾಸ ವಾನರ: .

Then Rama vowed to slay Vali. The monkey (Sugriva) described about Vali's prowess to Rama.

ಸುಗ್ರೀವಶ್ಚ Sugriva also, ರಾಘವೇ in Rama's, ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ prowess, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಶಙ್ಕಿತ: ಆಸೀತ್ had a doubt, ಸುಗ್ರೀವ: Sugriva, ರಾಘವಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಾರ್ಥಮ್ with a view to get convinced about Rama, ದುನ್ದುಭೇ: rakshasa named Dundubhi, ಮಹಾಪರ್ವತಸನ್ನಿಭಮ್ resembling a high mountain, ಉತ್ತಮಂ ಕಾಯಮ್ huge body, ದರ್ಶಯಾಮಾಸ showed.

Doubtful of the prowess Sugriva of Rama Sugriva inorder to get convinced showed him the huge (dead) body of Dundubhi resembling a big mountain.
ಉತ್ಸ್ಮಯಿತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾಬಾಹು: ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಚಾಸ್ಥಿ ಮಹಾಬಲ: .

ಪಾದಾಙ್ಗುಷ್ಠೇನ ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ ಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಂ ದಶಯೋಜನಮ್ ৷৷1.1.65৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಲ: one endowed with strength, ಮಹಾಬಾಹು: strong-armed (Rama), ಅಸ್ಥಿ skeleton, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having looked, ಉತ್ಸ್ಮಯಿತ್ವಾ smiling at a depth for a while, ಪಾದಾಙ್ಗುಷ್ಠೇನ with the great toe of the foot, ಸಮ್ಪೂರ್ಣಂ completely, ದಶಯೋಜನಮ್ to a distance of ten yojanas (eighty miles), ಚಿಕ್ಷೇಪ kicked off.

The strong-armed Rama, who was endowed with great strength looked at the skeleton and smiled within himself for a while. He kicked off the skeleton with the great toe of his foot completely to a full distance of ten yojanas (eighty miles).
ಬಿಭೇದ ಚ ಪುನಸ್ಸಾಲಾನ್ಸಪ್ತೈಕೇನ ಮಹೇಷುಣಾ .

ಗಿರಿಂ ರಸಾತಲಂ ಚೈವ ಜನಯನ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಂ ತಥಾ ৷৷1.1.66৷৷

Again inorder to create confidence (in Sugriva), he released a single mighty shaft which penetrated seven palmyra trees, a mountain and the Rasatala.

ಕಿಷ್ಕಿನ್ಧಾಂ ರಾಮಸಹಿತೋ ಜಗಾಮ ಚ ಗುಹಾಂ ತದಾ ৷৷1.1.67৷৷


ತತ: thereafter, ತೇನ by that act, ಪ್ರೀತಮನಾ: well pleased, ಸ ಮಹಾಕಪಿ: that mighty monkey Sugriva, ವಿಶ್ವಸ್ತ: ಚ was convinced, ರಾಮಸಹಿತ: together with Rama, ತದಾ then, ಗುಹಾಮ್ a cave, ಕಿಷ್ಕಿನ್ಧಾಮ್ city of Kishkindha, ಜಗಾಮ approached.

Pleased with Rama's action and convinced of his prowess he left thereafter with Rama he left for Kishkindha which was like a cave.
ತತೋಗರ್ಜದ್ಧರಿವರ: ಸುಗ್ರೀವೋ ಹೇಮಪಿಙ್ಗಲ: .

ತೇನ ನಾದೇನ ಮಹತಾ ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ ಹರೀಶ್ವರ: ৷৷1.1.68৷৷


ತತ: then, ಹರಿವರ: best of monkeys, ಹೇಮಪಿಙ್ಗಲ: yellowish hued like gold, ಸುಗ್ರೀವ: Sugriva, ಅಗರ್ಜತ್ roared, ತೇನ ಮಹತಾ with great, ನಾದೇನ voice, ಹರೀಶ್ವರ: lord of monkeys (Vali), ನಿರ್ಜಗಾಮ came out.

On entering the city of Kishkindha, Sugriva the best of monkeys of reddish yellow hue roared with a great voice. There upon Vali, the lord of monkeys came out (of the cave).
ಅನುಮಾನ್ಯ ತದಾ ತಾರಾಂ ಸುಗ್ರೀವೇಣ ಸಮಾಗತ: .

ನಿಜಘಾನ ಚ ತತ್ರೈನಂ ಶರೇಣೈಕೇನ ರಾಘವ: ৷৷1.1.69৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತಾರಾಮ್ Tara (Vali's wife), ಅನುಮಾನ್ಯ having convinced, ಸುಗ್ರೀವೇಣ Sugriva, ಸಮಾಗತ: joined (entered into a combat), ರಾಘವ: Raghava, ತತ್ರ there, ಏನಮ್ him, ಏಕೇನ with one, ಶರೇಣ ಚ single shaft, ನಿಜಘಾನ killed.

After convincing his wife Tara, who was dissuading from this, Vali entered into a combat with Sugriva. There, Rama killed Vali with a single shaft.
ತತಸ್ಸುಗ್ರೀವವಚನಾದ್ಧತ್ವಾ ವಾಲಿನಮಾಹವೇ .

ಸುಗ್ರೀವಮೇವ ತದ್ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ರಾಘವ: ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪಾದಯತ್ ৷৷1.1.70৷৷


ರಾಘವ: Rama, ಸುಗ್ರೀವವಚನಾತ್ in compliance with the words of Sugriva, ವಾಲಿನಮ್ Vali, ಆಹವೇ in the battle, ಹತ್ವಾ having killed, ತತ: thereafter, ತದ್ರಾಜ್ಯೇ in that kingdom of Vali, ಸುಗ್ರೀವಮೇವ Sugriva itself, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪಾದಯತ್ proposed (installed).

After he killed Vali in the combat in compliance with the words of Sugriva, Rama installed Sugriva as king.

The best of monkeys (Sugriva) gathered his monkey forces and despatched them in various directions in search of Janaka's daughter (Sita).

Hanuman arrived at the city of Lanka ruled by Ravana and found Sita in the Ashoka garden meditating on Rama.
ನಿವೇದಯಿತ್ವಾಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಂ ಚ ನಿವೇದ್ಯ ಚ .

ಅಭಿಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ as token of recognition (Rama's ring), ನಿವೇದಯಿತ್ವಾ having presented, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಂ ಚ the entire account, ನಿವೇದ್ಯ ಚ having related, ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ daughter of the king of Videha with its capital at Mithila, Sita, ಸಮಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ having consoled, ತೋರಣಮ್ outer gate of the garden, ಮರ್ದಯಾಮಾಸ crushed.

Hanuman delivered Rama's ring to Sita as a token of recognition, related the whole story and consoled her. He then crushed the arch (of the outer gate of the garden) before leaving.

After killing five commanders, seven sons of the counsellors, stamping out valiant Akshayakumara, the son of Ravana, Hanuman got himself captured (to be taken as captive).

The heroic Hanuman came to know that he could be released from the entanglements of the weapon granted to him through a boon by Brahma. He allowed himself to be restrained by the rakshasas with the ropes for the sake of achieving his other objective of seeing Ravana. Thereafter, he burnt the whole of Lanka except the place where Sita was and returned to deliver the good news to Rama.
ಸೋಧಿಗಮ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ರಾಮಂ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ .

Reaching Rama the great Hanuman gifted with boundless intellect circumambulated him and infact informed him that he had seen Sita.

ತತ: thereafter, ಸುಗ್ರೀವಸಹಿತ: together with Sugriva, ಮಹೋದಧೇ: ತೀರಮ್ shore of mighty ocean, ಗತ್ವಾ having reached, ಆದಿತ್ಯಸನ್ನಿಭೈ: resembling sharp and hot rays of sun, ಶರೈ: with shafts, ಸಮುದ್ರಮ್ Samudra, lord of the waters, ಕ್ಷೋಭಯಾಮಾಸ agitated.

Thereafter, Rama reached the shore of the ocean together with Sugriva and saw the ocean agitated with shafts burning like the Sun.

Samudra, lord of rivers, (afraid of Rama's anger) and having appeared in his own form, and on his advice got a bridge built with the help of Nala.
ತೇನ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪುರೀಂ ಲಙ್ಕಾಂ ಹತ್ವಾ ರಾವಣಮಾಹವೇ .

Rama entered the city of Lanka by means of that bridge, killed Ravana in the battle
and recovered Sita. Thereafter he felt greatly embarassed (for accepting his wife who had stayed in an others.

ಅಮೃಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ ಸಾ ಸೀತಾ ವಿವೇಶ ಜ್ವಲನಂ ಸತೀ ৷৷1.1.82৷৷


ತತ: for that reason, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಜನಸಂಸದಿ in the assembly of men, ತಾಮ್ about Sita, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh words, ಉವಾಚ spoke, ಸತೀ chaste, ಸಾ ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಅಮೃಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ incapable of enduring those words, ಜ್ವಲನಂ ವಿವೇಶ entered flaming fire.

Rama spoke harsh words about Sita in the assembly. Sita, incapable of enduring such words, entered fire.
ತತೋಗ್ನಿವಚನಾತ್ಸೀತಾಂ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ವಿಗತಕಲ್ಮಷಾಮ್ .

ಬಭೌ ರಾಮಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟ: ಪೂಜಿತಸ್ಸರ್ವದೈವತೈ: ৷৷1.1.83৷৷


ತತ: thereafter, ಅಗ್ನಿವಚನಾತ್ because of the testimony of fire-god, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ವಿಗತಕಲ್ಮಷಾಮ್ sinless, ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ having known, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟ: exceedingly pleased, ಸರ್ವದೈವತೈ: by all gods, ಪೂಜಿತ: was adored, ಬಭೌ shone.

With the of testimony of the fire-god, Rama was exceedingly pleased to know that Sita was sinless. All the gods adored him.
ಕರ್ಮಣಾ ತೇನ ಮಹತಾ ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಂ ಸಚರಾಚರಮ್ .

ಸದೇವರ್ಷಿಗಣಂ ತುಷ್ಟಂ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ: ৷৷1.1.84৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ: of highly courageous, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ತೇನ ಮಹತಾ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ by that great act, ಸಚರಾಚರಮ್ all the animate and inanimate beings, ಸದೇವರ್ಷಿಗಣಮ್ including groups of gods and sages, ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯಮ್ in three worlds, ತುಷ್ಟಮ್ well-pleased.

All the animate and inanimate beings, gods and sages in the three worlds were very pleased at this noble deed of the great Rama.
ಅಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯ ಚ ಲಙ್ಕಾಯಾಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರಂ ವಿಭೀಷಣಮ್ .

ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಸ್ತದಾ ರಾಮೋ ವಿಜ್ವರ: ಪ್ರಮುಮೋದ ಹ ৷৷1.1.85৷৷


ರಾಮ: Rama, ವಿಭೀಷಣಮ್ Vibhisana, ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇನ್ದ್ರಮ್ king of rakshasas, ಲಙ್ಕಾಯಾಮ್ in the city of Lanka, ಅಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯ coronated, ತದಾ then, ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯ: having accomplished his objective, ವಿಜ್ವರ: free from distress, ಪ್ರಮುಮೋದ ಹ was exceedingly rejoiced.

After coronating the rakshasa chief Vibhishana in the city of Lanka, Rama free from distress, exceedingly rejoiced after having accomplished his objective.
ದೇವತಾಭ್ಯೋ ವರಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ ಚ ವಾನರಾನ್ .

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಿತೋ ರಾಮ: ಪುಷ್ಪಕೇಣ ಸುಹೃದ್ವೃತ: ৷৷1.1.86৷৷

Having obtained a boon from the devatas (who had come to see him) Rama, revived all monkeys (fallen in the battle) and set out for Ayodhya accompanied by friends in the pushpaka (aerial car).

Rama who was a delight of all whose strength lies in truth went to the hermitage of Bharadwaja (as promised) and despatched Hanuman to Bharata as his messenger.
ಪುನರಾಖ್ಯಾಯಿಕಾಂ ಜಲ್ಪನ್ಸುಗ್ರೀವಸಹಿತಶ್ಚ ಸ: .

ಪುಷ್ಪಕಂ ತತ್ಸಮಾರುಹ್ಯ ನನ್ದಿಗ್ರಾಮಂ ಯಯೌ ತದಾ ৷৷1.1.88৷৷


ಪುನ: again, ಸುಗ್ರೀವಸಹಿತ: accompanied by Sugriva, ಸ: Rama, ಆಖ್ಯಾಯಿಕಾಮ್ recalling earlier incidents, ಜಲ್ಪನ್ conversing with each other, ತದಾ then, ತತ್ ಪುಷ್ಪಕಂ ಸಮಾರುಹ್ಯ mounting on that Pushpaka, ನನ್ದಿಗ್ರಾಮಮ್ to Nandigrama, ಯಯೌ departed.

Again accompanied by Sugriva and recalling earlier incidents and after both of them discussed with each other, Rama departed to Nandigrama riding that pushpaka chariot.
ನನ್ದಿಗ್ರಾಮೇ ಜಟಾಂ ಹಿತ್ವಾ ಭ್ರಾತೃಭಿಸ್ಸಹಿತೋನಘ: .

ರಾಮಸ್ಸೀತಾಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪುನರವಾಪ್ತವಾನ್ ৷৷1.1.89৷৷

At Nandigrama sinless Rama arrived, met his brothers. They shed their matted locks. With Sita restored he regained his kingdom.
ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಮುದಿತೋ ಲೋಕಸ್ತುಷ್ಟ: ಪುಷ್ಟಸ್ಸುಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ: .

ನಿರಾಮಯೋ ಹ್ಯರೋಗಶ್ಚ ದುರ್ಭಿಕ್ಷಭಯವರ್ಜಿತ: ৷৷1.1.90৷৷


ಲೋಕ: entire world, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಮುದಿತ: rejoiced with happiness, ತುಷ್ಟ: contended (because of fulfillment of their desire), ಪುಷ್ಟ: grown in strength because of happiness, ಸುಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ: with righteousness, ನಿರಾಮಯ: without sufferings or agonies, ಅರೋಗ: without diseases, ದುರ್ಭಿಕ್ಷಭಯವರ್ಜಿತ: ಚ and without fear of famine.

The entire world rejoiced with happiness with their desire fulfilled they were content. All people were following the path of righteousness. There was no fear of sufferings or agonies, diseases or famine.
ನ ಪುತ್ರಮರಣಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದ್ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪುರುಷಾ: ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ .

ನಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚಾವಿಧವಾ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ: ৷৷1.1.91৷৷


ಪುರುಷಾ: men, ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ any where, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ even little, ಪುತ್ರಮರಣಮ್ death of ones's own son, ನ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will not see, ನಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚ women, ಅವಿಧವಾ: will not be widowed, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ: ಭವಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will be devoted to their husbands.

During the period of Rama's rule, no where would men witness the death of their sons or women widowed. They would ever remain chaste and devoted to their husbands.

ನ ಚಾಪಿ ಕ್ಷುದ್ಭಯಂ ತತ್ರ ನ ತಸ್ಕರಭಯಂ ತಥಾ .


ತತ್ರ in that kingdom of Rama, ಅಗ್ನಿಜಂ ಭಯಮ್ fear due to fire, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ ನ not even little, ಜನ್ತವ: creatures, ಅಪ್ಸು in water, ನ ಮಜ್ಜನ್ತಿ will not be drowned, ವಾತಜಂ ಭಯಮ್ danger due to wind, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ ನ not even little, ತಥಾ and, ಜ್ವರಕೃತಮ್ ಅಪಿ ನ also no fear from fever, ನ ಕ್ಷುದ್ಭಯಮ್ ಅಪಿ no fear from hunger, ತಥಾ and, ತಸ್ಕರಭಯಂ ನ no fear from thieves.

There (in the kingdom of Rama) was no fear of fire, water, wind, disease, hunger and also theft.
ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾಣಿ ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಯುತಾನಿ ಚ ৷৷1.1.93৷৷

ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಮುದಿತಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಯಥಾ ಕೃತಯುಗೇ ತಥಾ .


ನಗರಾಣಿ ಚ cities, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾಣಿ ಚ villages, ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಯುತಾನಿ rich in food grains and wealth, ಯಥಾ ಕೃತಯುಗೇ as in kritayuga, ತಥಾ in the same way, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ ever, ಪ್ರಮುದಿತಾ: were happy.

All the cities and villages were affluent with wealth and food grains. People lived
happily as though they lived in Kritayuga.
ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧಶತೈರಿಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಥಾ ಬಹುಸುವರ್ಣಕೈ: ৷৷1.1.94৷৷

ಗವಾಂ ಕೋಟ್ಯಯುತಂ ದತ್ವಾ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೋಕಂ ಪ್ರಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ .

ಅಸಂಖ್ಯೇಯಂ ಧನಂ ದತ್ವಾ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಭ್ಯೋ ಮಹಾಯಶಾ: ৷৷1.1.95৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾ: highly renowned, ಅಶ್ವಮೇಧಶತೈ: by hundreds of Aswamedha sacrifices, ತಥಾ and ಬಹುಸುವರ್ಣಕೈ: Bahusuvarnaka sacrifices (where gold is given as charity on large scale),
ಇಷ್ಟ್ವಾ satisfying the gods, ಗವಾಮ್ cows, ಕೋಟ್ಯಯುತಮ್ hundreds of thousands, ದತ್ವಾ having bestowed, ಅಸಂಖ್ಯೇಯಮ್ countless, ಧನಮ್ wealth, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೇಭ್ಯ: for brahmins, ದತ್ವಾ having bestowed, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೋಕಂ ಪ್ರಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ will proceed to Brahmaloka.

Highly renowned Rama, having satisfied the gods with the performance of a hundred of aswamedhas and many suvarnakas bestowing hundreds of thousands of cows and immense wealth on the brahmins, will return to Brahmaloka.
