నిర్వృత్తే తు క్రతౌ తస్మిన్హయమేధే మహాత్మన:.

ప్రతిగృహ్య సురా భాగాన్ప్రతిజగ్ముర్యథాగతమ్৷৷1.18.1৷৷


మహాత్మన: magnanimous king Dasaratha's, తస్మిన్ హయమేధే when Aswamedha, క్రతౌ sacrifice, నిర్వృత్తే సతి had been completed, సురా: devatas, భాగాన్ their share of Havis, ప్రతిగృహ్య having received, యథాగతమ్ from wherever they came, ప్రతిజగ్ము: returned.

Completed by the magnanimous king (Dasaratha). The aswamedha and putreshti sacrifices, the devatas received their share of havis and returned to their respective abodes.
సమాప్తదీక్షానియమ: పత్నీగణసమన్విత:.

ప్రవివేశ పురీం రాజా సభృత్యబలవాహన:৷৷1.18.2৷৷


పత్నీగణసమన్విత: together with his queens, రాజా king Dasaratha, సమాప్తదీక్షానియమ: having observed the rules of initiation, సభృత్యబలవాహన: along with his servants, army chariots, పురీమ్ city of Ayodhya, ప్రవివేశ entered.

Having completed the prescribed vows (in respect of aswamedha), king Dasaratha together with his queens returned to the city of Ayodhya accompanied by his attendants, army and chariots.
యథార్హం పూజితాస్తేన రాజ్ఞా వై పృథివీశ్వరా:.

ముదితా: ప్రయయుర్దేశాన్ప్రణమ్య మునిపుఙ్గవమ్৷৷1.18.3৷৷


పృథివీశ్వరా: lords of the earth, kings,తేన రాజ్ఞా by that king (Dasaratha), యథార్హమ్ in a fitting manner, పూజితా: having been honoured, ముదితా: pleased, మునిపుఙ్గవమ్ best of sages, Vasistha, ప్రణమ్య having made obeisance, దేశాన్ to their own countries, ప్రయయు: returned.

Having been honoured by the king (Dasaratha) in a be fitting manner, the highly pleased lords of the earth (kings) made obeisance to the best of sages (Vasishta) and returned to their own countries.
శ్రీమతాం గచ్ఛతాం తేషాం స్వపురాణి పురాత్తత:.

బలాని రాజ్ఞాం శుభ్రాణి ప్రహృష్టాని చకాశిరే৷৷1.18.4৷৷


తత: పురాత్ from that town, స్వపురాణి to their own town, గచ్ఛతామ్ set out for, శ్రీమతామ్ dignified, తేషామ్ రాజ్ఞామ్ those kings', శుభ్రాణి bright, ప్రహృష్టాని delighted, బలాని forces, చకాశిరే shone.

When the army of the kings left the city (Ayodhya) for their own, the armed forces shone bright and cheerfl.
గతేషు పృథివీశేషు రాజా దశరథస్తదా.

ప్రవివేశ పురీం శ్రీమాన్ పురస్కృత్య ద్విజోత్తమాన్৷৷1.18.5৷৷


పృథివీశేషు when kings, గతేషు (సత్సు) departed, తదా then, శ్రీమాన్ the exalted, రాజా దశరథ: king Dasaratha, ద్విజోత్తమాన్ foremost of brahmins, పురస్కృత్య preceded by them, పురీమ్ ప్రవివేశ entered the capital city.

After the departure of the rulers, the exalted king Dasaratha preceded by the foremost of brahmins entered the city (of Ayodhya).
శాన్తయా ప్రయయౌ సార్ధమృశ్యశృఙ్గస్సుపూజిత:.

అన్వీయమానో రాజ్ఞాథ సానుయాత్రేణ ధీమతా৷৷1.18.6৷৷


అథ after that, ఋశ్యశృఙ్గ: sage Rsyasringa, సుపూజిత: having been duly honoured, సానుయాత్రేణ along his followers, ధీమతా by the intellectual, రాజ్ఞా king Romapada, అన్వీయమాన: was being accompanied, శాన్తయా సార్ధమ్ with Santa, ప్రయయౌ set out.

Having been duly honoured by king Dasaratha, sage Rsyasringa with his wife Santa accompanied by the wise king Romapada and his followers set out for his country.
ఏవం విసృజ్య తాన్సర్వాన్రాజా సమ్పూర్ణమానస:.

ఉవాస సుఖితస్తత్ర పుత్రోత్పత్తిం విచిన్తయన్৷৷1.18.7৷৷


రాజా king Dasaratha, ఏవమ్ in this manner, తాన్ సర్వాన్ all of them, విసృజ్య having sent them, సమ్పూర్ణమానస: with composed mind, పుత్రోత్పత్తిమ్ about begetting sons, విచిన్తయన్ thinking, తత్ర there, సుఖిత: ఉవాస lived happily.

When they (guests) all departed in this manner, Dasaratha with his desire fulfilled, his thought centred on begetting sons lived happily.
తతో యజ్ఞే సమాప్తే తు ఋతూనాం షట్సమత్యయు:.

తతశ్చ ద్వాదశే మాసే చైత్రే నావమికే తిథౌ৷৷1.18.8৷৷

నక్షత్రేదితిదైవత్యే స్వోచ్చసంస్థేషు పఞ్చసు.

గ్రహేషు కర్కటే లగ్నే వాక్పతావిన్దునా సహ৷৷1.18.9৷৷

ప్రోద్యమానే జగన్నాథం సర్వలోకనమస్కృతమ్.

కౌసల్యాజనయద్రామం సర్వలక్షణసంయుతమ్৷৷1.18.10৷৷

విష్ణోరర్ధం మహాభాగం పుత్రమైక్ష్వాకువర్ధనమ్.


తత: then, యజ్ఞే when sacrifice, సమాప్తే was completed, ఋతూనామ్ of seasons, షట్ six, సమత్యయు: were spent, తత: then, ద్వాదశే మాసే in twelfth month, చైత్రే in Chaitra month, నావమికే తిథౌ on the nineth day of the rising Moon, అదితిదైవత్యే presided by Aditi as devata, నక్షత్రే when the star (Punarvasu)was in ascendent, పఞ్చసు గ్రహేషు and the five planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus), స్వోచ్చసంస్థేషు in their own exalted houses, కర్కటే లగ్నే in Karkata Lagna, వాక్పతౌ when Brihaspati, ఇన్దునా సహ along with Moon, ప్రోద్యమానే was rising, కౌసల్యా Kausalya, జగన్నాథమ్ lord of the entire universe, సర్వలోకనమస్కృతమ్ bowed to by all the worlds, సర్వలక్షణసంయుతమ్ adorned with all the characteristics, విష్ణో: Vishnu's, అర్ధమ్ facet, మహాభాగమ్ highly fortunate, ఐక్ష్వాకువర్ధనమ్ perpetuating the Ikshvaku race, రామమ్ Rama, పుత్రమ్ as his son, అజనయత్ gave birth .

Six seasons (one year) passed after the completion of the sacrifice. In the twelfth month of Chaitra on the ninth day (of the bright fortnight), with Aditi as presiding deity when the star Punarvasu was in the ascendent and the five planets Sun, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and Venus, were exalted in their own house in karkata lagna, when Brihaspati was in conjunction with the Moon, Kausalya gave birth to a son: a facet of Visnu, Lord of the entire universe who received obeisance from all the worlds and was adorned with all auspicious signs, the venerable one to perpetuate the Ikshvaku race.
కౌసల్యా శుశుభే తేన పుత్రేణామితతేజసా৷৷1.18.11৷৷

యథా వరేణ దేవానామదితిర్వజ్రపాణినా.


కౌసల్యా Kausalya, అమితతేజసా by one with immeasurable lustre, తేన పుత్రేణ by that son, దేవానామ్ among devatas, by the foremost,వజ్రపాణినా by the wielder of Thunder-bolt, Indra, అదితి: యథా like Aditi, శుశుభే looked resplendent.

Kausalya glowed with the undiminished lustre of her son, just as Aditi with her son Indra, the foremost among the gods and the wielder of thunder.
భరతో నామ కైకేయ్యాం జజ్ఞే సత్యపరాక్రమ:৷৷1.18.12৷৷

సాక్షాద్విష్ణోశ్చతుర్భాగస్సర్వైస్సముదితో గుణై:.


సత్యపరాక్రమ: having truthful prowess, సాక్షాత్ manifestly, విష్ణో: Visnu's, చతుర్భాగ: fourth part, సర్వై: గుణై: with every kind of virtue, సముదిత: united with, భరతో నామ named Bharata, కైకేయ్యామ్ of Kaikeyi, జజ్ఞే was born.

As an incarnation of the fourth part of Visnu, imbued with all virtues, and armed with truth Bharata was born to Kaikeyi.
అథ లక్ష్మణశత్రుఘ్నౌ సుమిత్రాజనయత్సుతౌ৷৷1.18.13৷৷

వీరౌ సర్వాస్త్రకుశలౌ విష్ణోరర్ధసమన్వితౌ.


అథ then, సుమిత్రా Sumitra, వీరౌ heroic, సర్వాస్త్రకుశలౌ skilled in the use of all weapons, విష్ణో: Visnu's, అర్ధసమన్వితౌ having facets of Visnu, లక్ష్మణశత్రుఘ్నౌ Lakshmana and Satrughna, సుతౌ sons, అజనయత్ gave birth.

Sumitra gave birth to Lakshmana and Satrughna who were heroic, skilled in the use of all weapons and endowed with the facets of Visnu.
పుష్యే జాతస్తు భరతో మీనలగ్నే ప్రసన్నధీ:৷৷1.18.14৷৷

సార్పే జాతౌ చ సౌమిత్రీ కులీరేభ్యుదితే రవౌ.


ప్రసన్నధీ: of pure intellect, భరత: Bharata, పుష్యే when the Pushya star was in ascendant, మీనలగ్నే in Meena lagna, జాత: was born, సౌమిత్రీ sons of Sumitra, సార్పే in Aslesha star, కులీరే in the Karkata lagna, రవౌ when Sun, అభ్యుదితే is rising, జాతౌ were born.

Bharata endowed with pure intellect was born in meena lagna when pushya was in the ascendant. Lakshmana and Satrughna were born in karkata lagna with the star aslesha .
రాజ్ఞ: పుత్రా మహాత్మానశ్చత్వారో జజ్ఞిరే పృథక్৷৷1.18.15৷৷

గుణవన్తోనురూపాశ్చ రుచ్యా ప్రోష్ఠపదోపమా:.


గుణవన్త: endowed with every good quality, అనురూపా: worthy, రుచ్యా in brightness, ప్రోష్ఠపదోపమా: resembling Purva Bhaadra, Uttara Bhaadra stars, మహాత్మాన: highly noble, రాజ్ఞ: King's, చత్వార: four, పుత్రా: sons, పృథక్ successively, జజ్ఞిరే were born In this manner.

Four worthy sons were successively born to the noble king (Dasaratha), endowed with all virtuous, resembling purvabhadra and uttarabhadra stars in brightness.
జగు: కలం చ గన్ధర్వా ననృతుశ్చాప్సరోగణా:৷৷1.18.16৷৷

దేవదున్దుభయో నేదు: పుష్పవృష్టిశ్చ ఖాచ్చ్యుతా.

ఉత్సవశ్చ మహానాసీదయోధ్యాయాం జనాకుల:৷৷1.18.17৷৷


గన్ధర్వా: gandharvas, కలమ్ melodiously, జగుః sang, అప్సరోగణా: groups of apsaras, ననృతు: danced, దేవదున్దుభయ: celestial kettle drums, నేదు: sounded, ఖాత్ from the sky, పుష్పవృష్టిశ్చ showers of flowers, చ్యుతా was released, అయోధ్యాయామ్ in the city of Ayodhya, జనాకుల: tumult of men, మహాన్ great, ఉత్సవశ్చ ఆసీత్ festivities took place.

The gandharvas sang melodiously. Groups of apsaras danced. Celestial kettledrums were sounded. Flowers were showered from the sky. Men througed to Ayodhya to witness the festivities.
రథ్యాశ్చ జనసమ్బాధా నటనర్తకసఙ్కులా: .

గాయనైశ్చ విరావిణ్యో వాదనైశ్చ తథాపరై:৷৷1.18.18৷৷


రథ్యా: highways, జనసమ్బాధా: thickly populated by men, నటనర్తకసఙ్కులా: thronged by actors and dancers, గాయనైశ్చ by singers, వాదనై: by performers on different instruments, తథా and, అపరై: by other euologists and genealogists, విరావిణ్య: were resounding with noise.

The highways were crowded with men, thronged by actors and dancers. The voices of singers, performers on different instruments, eulogists and genealogists reverberated.
ప్రదేయాంశ్చ దదౌ రాజా సూతమాగధవన్దినామ్.

బ్రాహ్మణేభ్యో దదౌ విత్తం గోధనాని సహస్రశ:৷৷1.18.19৷৷


రాజా king, సూతమాగధవన్దినామ్ for bards, euologists and genealogists, ప్రదేయాన్ చ gifts fit to be bestowed, దదౌ gave, బ్రాహ్మణేభ్య: for brahmins, విత్తమ్ wealth, సహస్రశ: in thousands, గోధనాని kine, దదౌ gave.

The king distributed deserving gifts to priests, euologists and genealogists. He gave
brahmins in charity thousands of cows and other valuables.
అతీత్యైకాదశాహం తు నామకర్మ తథాకరోత్.

జ్యేష్ఠం రామం మహాత్మానం భరతం కైకయీసుతమ్৷৷1.18.20৷৷

సౌమిత్రిం లక్ష్మణమితి శత్రుఘ్నమపరం తథా.

వసిష్ఠ: పరమప్రీతో నామాని కృతవాన్ తదా ৷৷1.18.21৷৷


తథా and, ఏకాదశాహమ్ eleven days, అతీత్య having completed, నామకర్మ naming ceremony, అకరోత్ he (Vasishta) performed, మహాత్మానమ్ illustrious one, జ్యేష్ఠమ్ eldest son, రామమ్ as Rama, కైకయీసుతమ్ the son of Kaikeyi, భరతమ్ as Bharata, సౌమిత్రిమ్ a son of Sumitra, లక్ష్మణమితి as Lakshmana, అపరమ్ the other son, శత్రుఘ్నమ్ as Satrughna, పరమప్రీత: highly delighted, వసిష్ఠ: Vasishta, తదా then, నామాని కృతవాన్ gave names.

After a lapse of eleven days, the naming ceremony was performed. Highly delighted preceptor Vasishta named Kausalya's son Rama, Kaikeyi's son Bharata, one son of Sumitra, Lakshmana and the other Satrughna.
బ్రాహ్మణాన్భోజయామాస పౌరాఞ్జానపదానపి.

అదదాద్బ్రహ్మణానాం చ రత్నౌఘమమితం బహు৷৷1.18.22৷৷

తేషాం జన్మక్రియాదీని సర్వకర్మాణ్యకారయత్.


బ్రాహ్మణాన్ brahmins, పౌరాన్ inhabitants of the city, జానపదానపి also rural folk, భోజయామాస were offered, బ్రాహ్మణానామ్ for Brahmins, అమితమ్ unlimited, బహు abundant, రత్నౌఘమ్ heaps of jewels, అదదాత్ bestowed, తేషామ్ for them, జన్మక్రియాదీని rites to be performed at the time of birth, సర్వకర్మాణి and all other rites, అకారయత్ were made to be performed.

Brahmins as well as inhabitants of the city and rural areas were feasted. (Dasaratha) bestowed on brahmins unlimited and abundant jewels in charity. The rites at the time of birth and all other rites (associated with the new-born) were duly performed.
తేషాం కేతురివ జ్యేష్ఠో రామో రతికర: పితు:৷৷1.18.23৷৷

బభూవ భూయో భూతానాం స్వయమ్భూరివ సమ్మత:.


తేషామ్ amongst all of them, జ్యేష్ఠ: eldest, రామ: Rama, కేతురివ like flag, పితు: for his father భూయ: exceedingly, రతికర: causing pleasure, స్వయమ్భూరివ like Brahma, భూతానామ్ for all living beings, సమ్మత:బభూవ became highly respectable .

Among them, Rama like the exalted flag, became dear to his father like Brahma he was highly respected by all living beings.
సర్వే వేదవిదశ్శూరాస్సర్వే లోకహితే రతా:৷৷1.18.24৷৷

సర్వే జ్ఞానోపసమ్పన్నాస్సర్వే సముదితా గుణై:.


సర్వే all of them, వేదవిద: well-versed in vedas, శూరా: were heroic, సర్వే all, లోకహితే in the welfare of people, రతా: devoted, సర్వే all, జ్ఞానోపసమ్పన్నా: endowed with knowledge, సర్వే all, గుణై: with virtues, సముదితా: were furnished with.

All the sons (of Dasaratha) became well-versed in the Vedas. They were heroic, endowed with knowledge and virtues and were devoted to the welfare of the people.
తేషామపి మహాతేజా రామస్సత్యపరాక్రమ:৷৷1.18.25৷৷

ఇష్టస్సర్వస్య లోకస్య శశాఙ్క ఇవ నిర్మల:.


తేషామపి among all of them also, మహాతేజా: highly lustrous, సత్యపరాక్రమ: truly mighty, రామ: Rama, నిర్మల: free from moral taints, శశాఙ్క:ఇవ like moon, సర్వస్య లోకస్య ఇష్ట: was dear to the entire world.

Among them the highly lustrous and truly mighty Rama was stainless (in character).
He was auspicious to the entire world like the Moon.
గజస్కన్ధేశ్వపృష్ఠే చ రథచర్యాసు సమ్మత:৷৷1.18.26৷৷

ధనుర్వేదే చ నిరత: పితృశుశ్రూషణే రత:.


గజస్కన్ధే on mounting elephants, అశ్వపృష్ఠే చ while riding on the back of horse, రథచర్యాసు going about in chariots, సమ్మత: has been accepted as skilled, ధనుర్వేదే చ in archery also, నిరత: always engaged, పితృశ్శుశ్రూషణే in service of his parents, రత: was devoted.

Accepted as skilled in mounting elephants, riding horses, driving chariots and also in archery, he was always emgaged in the service of his parents.
బాల్యాత్ప్రభృతి సుస్నిగ్ధో లక్ష్మణో లక్ష్మివర్ధన:৷৷1.18.27৷৷

రామస్య లోకరామస్య భ్రాతుర్జ్యేష్ఠస్య నిత్యశ:.


లక్ష్మివర్ధన: causing prosperity to grow, లక్ష్మణ: Lakshmana, బాల్యాత్ ప్రభృతి from his childhood, లోకరామస్య for a man of delight of the world, జ్యేష్ఠస్య of the eldest, భ్రాతు: of the brother, రామస్య in the matter of Rama, నిత్యశ: always, సుస్నిగ్ధ: remained very friendly .

Right from his very childhood Lakshmana, an enhancer of fortune, always remained very attached to his eldest brother Rama, the delight of the world.
సర్వప్రియకరస్తస్య రామస్యాపి శరీరత:৷৷1.18.28৷৷

లక్ష్మణో లక్ష్మిసమ్పన్నో బహి:ప్రాణ ఇవాపర:.


లక్ష్మిసమ్పన్న: possessed of auspiciousness, లక్ష్మణ: Lakshmana, శరీరత: అపి even by offering his body, సర్వప్రియకర: doing every thing dear to him, తస్య రామస్య for that Rama, అపర: another, బహి: ప్రాణ ఇవ like life moving outside (his body).

Lakshmana, possessed of fortune, was the dearest to his brother than his own body. As though he was his life without.
న చ తేన వినా నిద్రాం లభతే పురుషోత్తమ:৷৷1.18.29৷৷

మృష్టమన్నముపానీతమశ్నాతి న హి తం వినా.


పురుషోత్తమః greatest among men( Rama), తేన వినా without Lakshmana, నిద్రామ్ sleep, న లభతే did not obtain, ఉపానీతమ్ having been presented, మృష్టమ్ best cooked, అన్నం చ food, తం వినా without him, న హి అశ్నాతి would not partake the same.

Rama, the greatest among men would not sleep without Lakshmana's company. He would not partake even the choicest food minus to him.
యదా హి హయమారూఢో మృగయాం యాతి రాఘవ:৷৷1.18.30৷৷

తదైనం పృష్ఠతోన్వేతి సధను: పరిపాలయన్.


రాఘవ: Raghava, హయమ్ horse back, ఆరూఢ: mounting on, యదా whenever, మృగయామ్ for hunting, యాతి goes, తదా then, స: Lakshmana, ధను: పరిపాలయన్ holding bow in his hand, ఏనమ్ him (Rama), పృష్ఠత: behind, అన్వేతి followed.

Whenever Raghava (Rama) went hunting into the forest, riding the horse, Lakshmana used to follow him holding bow and arrows (in his hand).
భరతస్యాపి శత్రుఘ్నో లక్ష్మణావరజో హి స:৷৷1.18.31৷৷

ప్రాణై: ప్రియతరో నిత్యం తస్య చాసీత్తథా ప్రియ:.


లక్ష్మణావరజ: younger brother of Lakshmana, స: శత్రుఘ్న: that Satrughna, భరతస్యాపి for Bharata also, నిత్యమ్ always, ప్రాణై: (more than his) life, ప్రియతర: was dearer, తస్య చ ఆసీత్ for Satrughna also, తథా in that manner, ప్రియ: became dear( to Bharata).

In a similar manner Satrughna, younger brother of Lakshmana, became dearer than his own life to Bharata. Similarly, Bharata also was dear to Satrughna.
స చతుర్భిర్మహాభాగై:పుత్రైర్దశరథ: ప్రియై:৷৷1.18.32৷৷

బభూవ పరమప్రీతో దేవైరివ పితామహ:.


స: దశరథ: Dasaratha, మహాభాగై: by the very fortunate ones, చతుర్భి: four, పుత్రై: by sons, పితామహ: Brahma, దేవై: ఇవ like devatas, పరమప్రీత: బభూవ was highly pleased.

With his very fortunate sons, Dasaratha was highly pleased like Brahma was with the gods.
తే యదా జ్ఞానసమ్పన్నాస్సర్వైస్సముదితా గుణై:৷৷1.18.33৷৷

హ్రీమన్త: కీర్తిమన్తశ్చ సర్వజ్ఞా దీర్ఘదర్శిన:.

తేషామేవం ప్రభావానాం సర్వేషాం దీప్తతేజసామ్৷৷1.18.34৷৷

పితా దశరథో హృష్టో బ్రహ్మా లోకాధిపో యథా.


తే they, యదా when, జ్ఞానసమ్పన్నా: were enriched with knowledge, సర్వైః గుణై: by all virtues, సముదితా: united, హ్రీమన్త: modest, కీర్తిమన్తశ్చ renowned, సర్వజ్ఞా: knower of all things, దీర్ఘదర్శిన: farsighted, ఏవం in this manner, ప్రభావానామ్ having such faculties, దీప్తతేజసామ్ of the men of shining glory, తేషాం సర్వేషామ్ in their matter, పితా దశరథ: father Dasaratha, లోకాధిప: lord of the worlds, బ్రహ్మా యథా like Brahma, హృష్ట: rejoiced.

All his sons were enriched with knowledge and endowed with all virtues. They were modest, renowned, omniscient and far-sighted. Dasaratha rejoiced at the sight of those glorious sons with such faculties and looked like Brahma, Lord of the worlds.
తే చాపి మనుజవ్యాఘ్రా వైదికాధ్యయనే రతా:৷৷1.18.35৷৷

పితృశుశ్రూషణరతా ధనుర్వేదే చ నిష్ఠితా:.


తే they, మనుజవ్యాఘ్రా అపి also tigers among men, వైదికాధ్యయనే in the study of vedas, రతా: were engaged, పితృశుశ్రూషణరతా: intent on doing service to their parents, ధనుర్వేదే in the archery also, నిష్ఠితా: were proficient.

They (like) tigers among men, were fond of the study of the Vedas and were always
engaged in the service of their parents. They were also proficient in the science of archery.
అథ రాజా దశరథస్తేషాం దారక్రియాం ప్రతి৷৷1.18.36৷৷

చిన్తయామాస ధర్మాత్మా సోపాధ్యాయస్సబాన్ధవ:.


అథ thereafter, ధర్మాత్మా the virtuous, రాజా దశరథ: king Dasaratha, సోపాధ్యాయ: along with priests, సబాన్ధవ: along with relatives, తేషామ్ their, దారక్రియాం ప్రతి marriage, చిన్తయామాస was engaged in the thought .

Then the virtuous king Dasaratha deliberated with his priests and kinsmen about the marriage of his sons.
తస్య చిన్తయమానస్య మన్త్రిమధ్యే మహాత్మన:৷৷1.18.37৷৷

అభ్యగచ్ఛన్మహాతేజా విశ్వామిత్రో మహాముని:.


మహాత్మన: of the noble minded, తస్య king Dasaratha, మన్త్రిమధ్యే in the midst of counsellors, చిన్తయమానస్య while he was thinking, మహాతేజా: highly illustrious king, విశ్వామిత్ర: మహాముని: ascetic Viswamitra, అభ్యగచ్ఛత్ arrived.

While the noble-minded king was thus deliberating in the midst of his counsellors, there arrived the effulgent ascetic Viswamitra.
స రాజ్ఞో దర్శనాకాఙ్క్షీ ద్వారాధ్యక్షానువాచ హ৷৷1.18.38৷৷

శీఘ్రమాఖ్యాత మాం ప్రాప్తం కౌశికం గాధినస్సుతమ్.


స: he, రాజ్ఞ: king's, దర్శనాకాఙ్క్షీ desirous of seeing, ద్వారాధ్యక్షాన్ door keepers, ఉవాచ హ addressed saying, "గాధిన: Gadhi's, సుతమ్ son, కౌశికమ్ born in the line of Kusika, మామ్ me, ప్రాప్తమ్ having arrived, శీఘ్రమ్ speedily, ఆఖ్యాత declare".

Desirous of seeing the king (Dasaratha) he accosted the door-keepers, saying "Inform the king quickly about the arrival of Viswamitra, the son of Gadhi born in the line of
Kusika".
తచ్ఛ్రుత్వా వచనం త్రాసాద్రాజ్ఞో వేశ్మ ప్రదుద్రువు:৷৷1.18.39৷৷

సమ్భ్రాన్తమనసస్సర్వే తేన వాక్యేన చోదితా:.


తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, సర్వే all of them, సమ్భ్రాన్తమనస: with excited minds, తేన వాక్యేన by that statement, చోదితా: prompted, రాజ్ఞ: king's, వేశ్మ apartment, త్రాసాత్ due to fear, ప్రదుద్రువుః hastened.

On hearing those words (of Viswamitra) all of them prompted by fear because of left for the royal apartment with excited minds and hurried steps.
తే గత్వా రాజభవనం విశ్వామిత్రమృషిం తదా৷৷1.18.40৷৷

ప్రాప్తమావేదయామాసుర్నృపాయైక్ష్వాకవే తదా.


తదా then, తే they, రాజభవనమ్ towards royal palace, గత్వా having gone, తదా then, విశ్వామిత్రమ్ ఋషిమ్ maharshi Viswamitra, ప్రాప్తమ్ having come, ఐక్ష్వాకవే to the king belonging to Ikshvaku race, నృపాయ to king Dasaratha, ఆవేదయామాసు: communicated.

Having reached the royal hall, they reported to the king (Dasaratha), descendant of the Ikshvakus about the arrival of sage Viswamitra.
తేషాం తద్వచనం శ్రుత్వా సపురోధాస్సమాహిత:৷৷1.18.41৷৷

ప్రత్యుజ్జగామ తం హృష్టో బ్రహ్మాణమివ వాసవ:.


తేషామ్ theirs, తత్ వచనమ్ those words, శ్రుత్వా having heard, హృష్ట: immensely pleased, సపురోధా: together with his preceptors, సమాహిత: with absorbed mind, తమ్ him, వాసవ: Indra, బ్రహ్మాణమివ like Brahma, ప్రత్యుజ్జగామ went forth to receive him.

Having heard their words, Dasaratha in great joy went forth together with his preceptors to receive him like Indra receiving Brahma.
తం దృష్ట్వా జ్వలితం దీప్త్యా తాపసం సంశితవ్రతమ్৷৷1.18.42৷৷

ప్రహృష్టవదనో రాజా తతోర్ఘ్యముపహారయత్.


తత: then, రాజా king, జ్వలితమ్ shining, దీప్త్యా with radiance, తాపసం ascetic, సంశితవ్రతమ్ who had fulfilled his vows, తమ్ him, దృష్ట్వా having seen, ప్రహృష్టవదన: with cheerful countenance, అర్ఘ్యమ్ respectable offerings, ఉపహారయత్ offered.

Seeing Viswamitra, shining with the power of his penance fulfilled the king with a cheerful countenance made offerings with due respect.
స రాజ్ఞ: ప్రతిగృహ్యార్ఘ్యం శాస్త్రదృష్టేన కర్మణా৷৷1.18.43৷৷

కుశలం చావ్యయం చైవ పర్యపృచ్ఛన్నరాధిపమ్.2


స: he, శాస్త్రదృష్టేన as shown in the scriptures, కర్మణా by religious rites, రాజ్ఞ: of the king, అర్ఘ్యమ్ offerings, ప్రతిగృహ్య having received, నరాధిపమ్ king, కుశలం చ welfare of the kingdom, అవ్యయం prosperity, పర్యపృచ్ఛత్ enquired.

Viswamitra received the offerings as ordained in the scriptures and enquired from the king about the welfare and prosperity of his kingdom.
పురే కోశే జనపదే బాన్ధవేషు సుహృత్సు చ ৷৷1.18.44৷৷

కుశలం కౌశికో రాజ్ఞ: పర్యపృచ్ఛత్సుధార్మిక:.


సుధార్మిక: exceedingly virtuous, కౌశిక: Viswamitra, రాజ్ఞ: King's, పురే in the cities, కోశే in treasury, జనపదే in the villages, బాన్ధవేషు among relatives, సుహృత్సు చ among friends, కుశలమ్ welfare, పర్యపృచ్ఛత్ enquired.

The exceedingly virtuous sage Viswamitra enquired from the king about the treasury welfare of his subjects living in cities and villages, and the well being of his friends and relatives.
అపి తే సన్నతాస్సర్వే సామన్తా రిపవో జితా:৷৷1.18.45৷৷

దైవం చ మానుషం చాపి కర్మ తే సాధ్వనుష్ఠితమ్.


సామన్తా: tributary kings, సర్వే all, తే to you, అపి సన్నతా: are they submissive, రిపవ: enemies, జితా: are conquered, తే to you, దైవతం కర్మ rites for propitiating gods, మానుషం చాపి service to humanity, సాధు rightly, అనుష్ఠితమ్ performed.

Are the tributary kings submissive to you? Have you conquered your enemies? Are the rites for propitiating gods and the services to humanity performed rightly?
వసిష్ఠం చ సమాగమ్య కుశలం మునిపుఙ్గవ:৷৷1.18.46৷৷

ఋషీంశ్చ తాన్యథాన్యాయం మహాభాగానువాచ హ.


మునిపుఙ్గవ: the foremost of ascetis,Viswamitra, వసిష్ఠం చ Vasistha also, తాన్ మహాభాగాన్ all those distinguished men, ఋషీంశ్చ sages also, యథాన్యాయమ్ according to customary protocol, సమాగమ్య having approached, కుశలమ్ welfare, ఉవాచ spoke (enquired).

The foremost of ascetis, Viswamitra approached Vasishta and all other distinguised sages following the protocal and enquired about their welfare.
తే సర్వే హృష్టమనసస్తస్య రాజ్ఞో నివేశనమ్৷৷1.18.47৷৷

వివిశు: పూజితాస్తత్ర నిషేదుశ్చ యథార్హత:.


సర్వే all of them, హృష్టమనస: with gladdened hearts, తస్య రాజ్ఞ: that king's, నివేశనమ్ royal palace, వివిశు: entered, తత్ర there, యథార్హత: according to their status-merit, పూజితా: having been honoured, నిషేదుశ్చ sat down.

All of them with gladdened hearts entered the royal palace and sat down, in accordance with their position after having been duly honoured by the king.
అథ హృష్టమనా రాజా విశ్వామిత్రం మహామునిమ్৷৷1.18.48৷৷

ఉవాచ పరమోదారో హృష్టస్తమభిపూజయన్.


అథ thereafter, పరమోదార: highly generous, రాజా king Dasaratha, హృష్టమనా: well-pleased, తమ్ మహామునిమ్ that great sage, విశ్వామిత్రమ్ Visvamitra, అభిపూజయన్ while worshipping, హృష్ట: with joy, ఉవాచ spoke৷৷

Then the munificent king, very much (at Viswamitra's arrival) pleased offered him a happy hospitality and spoke:
యథామృతస్య సమ్ప్రాప్తిర్యథావర్షమనూదకే.

యథా సదృశదారేషు పుత్రజన్మాప్రజస్య చ ৷৷1.18.49৷৷

ప్రణష్టస్య యథాలాభో యథా హర్షో మహోదయే.

తథైవాగమనం మన్యే స్వాగతం తే మహామునే৷৷1.18.50৷৷


మహామునే O! Great sage, అమృతస్య nectar's, సమ్ప్రాప్తి: obtaining, యథా like, అనూదకే in a parched land వర్షమ్ rain, యథా like, అప్రజస్య for a man without progeny, సదృశదారేషు through his worthy wife, పుత్రజన్మ birth of sons, యథా like, ప్రణష్టస్య for one who lost wealth, లాభః recoveryof, యథా like, మహోదయే in a great achievement, హర్ష: joy, యథా like, తే ఆగమనమ్ your arrival, తథా ఏవ similar to that, మన్యే I am considering, స్వాగతమ్ welcome to you,

"O great sage, welcome to you! Your arrival, to me, is like nectar (to a human being), rains to the parched land, birth of a son to the childless through his worthy wife, recovery of lost properity and festive joy in a great achievemnt.
పూర్వం రాజర్షిశబ్దేన తపసా ద్యోతితప్రభః.

బ్రహ్మర్షిత్వమనుప్రాప్త: పూజ్యోసి బహుధా మయా৷৷1.18.53৷৷


పూర్వమ్ formerly, రాజర్షిశబ్దేన by the word of 'Rajarshi', ద్యోతితప్రభ: indicating your shining (power), అను thereafter, తపసా by austerities, బ్రహ్మర్షిత్వమ్ status of Brahmarshi, ప్రాప్త: (you have) obtained, మయా by me, బహుధా in several ways, పూజ్య:అసి you are worthy of worship.

Earlier you were rajarshi, a warrior sage. By your austerities you have obtained the brilliance that lends radiance even to the Sun and the Moon you have gained the status of a brahmrshi. In several ways you are worthy of my worship.
తదద్భుతమిదం బ్రహ్మన్పవిత్రం పరమం మమ.

శుభక్షేత్రగతశ్చాహం తవ సన్దర్శనాత్ప్రభో৷৷1.18.54৷৷


బ్రహ్మన్ O! Brahman, తత్ therefore ఇదమ్ this l, అద్భుతమ్ wonderful, మమ to me, పరమమ్ great, పవిత్రమ్ pure, ప్రభో O! Lord, తవ your, సన్దర్శనాత్ by the presence, అహమ్ I, శుభక్షేత్రగతశ్చ have acquired merits of pilgrimage .

O Brahman! your arrival has caused surprise to me. It has conferred great purity on me. O Lord! by your very presence here, I feel I haved acquired the merits of a pilgrimage.
బ్రూహి యత్ప్రార్థితం తుభ్యం కార్యమాగమనం ప్రతి.

ఇచ్ఛామ్యనుగృహీతోహం త్వదర్థపరివృద్ధయే৷৷1.18.55৷৷


ఆగమనం ప్రతి in coming here, తుభ్యమ్ to you, ప్రార్థితమ్ desired, యత్ కార్యమ్ the purpose, బ్రూహి tell me, అహమ్ I, అనుగృహీత: am favoured, త్వదర్థపరివృద్ధయే to achieve your object, ఇచ్ఛామి I am desirous.

Be pleased to tell me the purpose of your visit. I desire to be given the privilege of
doing service to achieve your object.
కార్యస్య న విమర్శం చ గన్తుమర్హసి కౌశిక.

కర్తా చాహమశేషేణ దైవతం హి భవాన్మమ৷৷1.18.56৷৷


కౌశిక O! Visvamitra, కార్యస్య of the work, విమర్శమ్ hesitation, గన్తుమ్ న అర్హసి you ought not get, అహమ్ I, విశేషేణ specially, కర్తా చ I shall accomplish that act, భవాన్ you, మమ for me, దైవతం హి are a god.

O Viswamitra! you need not hesitatate to tell me what ought to be performed. I shall accomplish that act in every possible special way. You are a god to me.
మమ చాయమనుప్రాప్తో మహానభ్యుదయో ద్విజ.

తవాగమనజ: కృత్స్నో ధర్మశ్చానుత్తమో మమ৷৷1.18.57৷৷


ద్విజ O! Brahmin, మమ for me, అయమ్ this, మహాన్ great, అభ్యుదయ: prosperity, అనుప్రాప్త: has come, మమ for me, తవ ఆగమనజ: in consequence of your coming here, కృత్స్న: entire, ధర్మ: excellent merit, అనుత్తమ: great.

O Brahmin! I have attained this high foutune today. My great merit has been realised as a result of your arrival".
ఇతి హృదయసుఖం నిశమ్య వాక్యం

శ్రుతిసుఖమాత్మవతా వినీతముక్తమ్.

ప్రథితగుణయశా గుణైర్విశిష్ట:

పరమఋషి: పరమం జగామ హర్షమ్৷৷1.18.58৷৷


ఆత్మవతా by the wise and prudent, Dasaratha, ఇతి in this manner, వినీతమ్ in a humble way, ఉక్తమ్ spoken, హృదయసుఖమ్ comfortable to the mind, శ్రుతిసుఖమ్ pleasant to the ears, వాక్యమ్ words, నిశమ్య having heard, ప్రథితగుణయశా: with celebrated qualities and fame, గుణై: by virtues, ర్విశిష్ట: distinguished, పరమఋషి: excellent rishi, పరమమ్ great, హర్షమ్ జగామ experinced delight.

On hearing the words spoken in such an humble manner by the prudent king words pleasing to the mind and to the ears, the great rishi of celebrated virtues and fame, of sterling qualities experienced deep delight.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే బాలకాణ్డే అష్టాదశస్సర్గ:৷৷
Thus ends the eighteenth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
