[Valmiki goes to river Tamasa for morning ablutions -- He sees a male krauncha being shot down by a hunter -- expresses the reflection of a female companion's sorrow in his experience in the form of a sloka in metrical form -- Lord Brahma appears at the hermitage -- directs him to compose the great poem in the same metre describing the story of Rama as related by Narada -- grants him the power of clairvoyance.]

ನಾರದಸ್ಯ ತು ತದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದ:.

ನಾರದಸ್ಯ Narada's, ತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ those words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತು having heard, ವಾಕ್ಯವಿಶಾರದ: proficient in (shastras which are in the form of) speech, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ಮಹಾಮುನಿ: distinguished sage, ಸಹಶಿಷ್ಯ: along with his disciples, ಪೂಜಯಾಮಾಸ worshipped (praised) him.

On hearing the words of Narada the distinguished and righteous sage Valmiki, proficient in composing slokas worshipped him along with his disciples.
ಯಥಾವತ್ಪೂಜಿತಸ್ತೇನ ದೇವರ್ಷಿರ್ನಾರದಸ್ತದಾ .

ಆಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತಸ್ಸ ಜಗಾಮ ವಿಹಾಯಸಮ್ ৷৷1.2.2৷৷


ದೇವರ್ಷಿ: divine sage, ಸ: ನಾರದ: Narada, ತೇನ by him, ತಥಾ in that way, ಯಥಾವತ್ in a fitting manner, ಪೂಜಿತ: having been worshipped, ಆಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವ having taken leave of him, ಅಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತ: having been permitted, ವಿಹಾಯಸಮ್ to heaven, ಜಗಾಮ went.

The divine sage Narada after having been worshipped by Valmiki in a befitting manner sought his leave and went to heaven.
ಸ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ಗತೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ದೇವಲೋಕಂ ಮುನಿಸ್ತದಾ .

ಜಗಾಮ ತಮಸಾತೀರಂ ಜಾಹ್ನವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ವವಿದೂರತ: ৷৷1.2.3৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ when Narada, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ instantly, ದೇವಲೋಕಮ್ devaloka, ಗತೇ having gone, ತದಾ then, ಮುನಿ: sage Valmiki, ಜಾಹ್ನವ್ಯಾ: of river Ganges, ಅವಿದೂರತ: not very far from, ತಮಸಾತೀರಮ್ bank of the river Tamasa, ಜಗಾಮ went.

After Narada had gone to devaloka, sage Valmiki reached the bank of river Tamasa which is not very far from the Ganges for morning ablutions.
ಸ ತು ತೀರಂ ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತಮಸಾಯಾ ಮಹಾಮುನಿ: .

ಶಿಷ್ಯಮಾಹ ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತೀರ್ಥಮಕರ್ದಮಮ್ ৷৷1.2.4৷৷


ಸ: that, ಮಹಾಮುನಿ: eminent sage, ತಮಸಾಯಾ: ತೀರಮ್ the bank of the river Tamasa, ಸಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ಅಕರ್ದಮಮ್ free from mud (pure and clear), ತೀರ್ಥಮ್ descent into the river ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ by the side of, ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing, ಶಿಷ್ಯಮ್ to the disciple, ಆಹ spoke.

The eminent sage Valmiki reached the bank of Tamasa and seen a descent into the river with pellucid waters, spoke to the disciple standing by the side.
ಅಕರ್ದಮಮಿದಂ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಭರದ್ವಾಜ ನಿಶಾಮಯ .

ರಮಣೀಯಂ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನಾಮ್ಬು ಸನ್ಮನುಷ್ಯಮನೋ ಯಥಾ ৷৷1.2.5৷৷


ಭರದ್ವಾಜ: O! Bharadwaja, ಸನ್ಮನುಷ್ಯಮನ: ಯಥಾ like the mind of a virtuous man, ಅಕರ್ದಮಮ್ clear and pure (without sin), ಪ್ರಸನ್ನಾಮ್ಬು pleasing waters, ರಮಣೀಯಮ್ beautiful, ಇದಮ್ this, ತೀರ್ಥಮ್ holy spot, ನಿಶಾಮಯ behold.

"O Bharadwaja, behold the beautiful and pleasant waters of this river. This holy spot is as clear and pure as the mind of a virtuous man.
ನ್ಯಸ್ಯತಾಂ ಕಲಶಸ್ತಾತ ದೀಯತಾಂ ವಲ್ಕಲಂ ಮಮ .

ಇದಮೇವಾವಗಾಹಿಷ್ಯೇ ತಮಸಾತೀರ್ಥಮುತ್ತಮಮ್ ৷৷1.2.6৷৷


ತಾತ! O! Dear, ಕಲಶ: water-pitcher, ನ್ಯಸ್ಯತಾಮ್ be placed on the ground, ಮಮ my, ವಲ್ಕಲಮ್ bark garment, ದೀಯತಾಮ್ be given, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ best (of holy spots), ಇದಮ್ this, ತಮಸಾತೀರ್ಥಮೇವ spot on the bank of river Tamasa, ಅವಗಾಹಿಷ್ಯೇ I will enter.

O dear one! Put down the pitcher on the ground. Give me my garment. I shall take a dip in Tamasa, the holiest of places".
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ .

ಪ್ರಾಯಚ್ಛತ ಮುನೇಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ವಲ್ಕಲಂ ನಿಯತೋ ಗುರೋ: ৷৷1.2.7৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the noble-minded, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇನ by Valmiki, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ: having been asked, ಗುರೋ: of the spiritual master, ನಿಯತ: obedient, ಭರದ್ವಾಜ: Bharadwaja, ತಸ್ಯ ಮುನೇ: for that sage Valmiki, ವಲ್ಕಲಮ್ bark garment, ಪ್ರಾಯಚ್ಛತ gave.

Asked thus by the noble-minded master Valmiki, Bharadwaja, ever obedient to his spiritual master, gave the sage the bark garment.
ಸ ಶಿಷ್ಯಹಸ್ತಾದಾದಾಯ ವಲ್ಕಲಂ ನಿಯತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: .

ವಿಚಚಾರ ಹ ಪಶ್ಯಂಸ್ತತ್ಸರ್ವತೋ ವಿಪುಲಂ ವನಮ್ ৷৷1.2.8৷৷


ನಿಯತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: possessing fully restrained senses, ಸ: Valmiki, ಶಿಷ್ಯಹಸ್ತಾತ್ from the hands of his disciple, ವಲ್ಕಲಮ್ bark garment, ಆದಾಯ having received, ವಿಪುಲಮ್ extensive, ತತ್ ವನಮ್ that forest, ಸರ್ವತ: all around, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ looking, ವಿಚಚಾರ ಹ wandered.

Valmiki who had his senses under his command received the bark-garment from the hands of his disciple and wandered about in that extensive forest, looking all around.
ತಸ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಶೇ ತು ಮಿಥುನಂ ಚರನ್ತಮನಪಾಯಿನಮ್ .

ದದರ್ಶ ಭಗವಾಂಸ್ತತ್ರ ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಯೋಶ್ಚಾರುನಿಸ್ವನಮ್ ৷৷1.2.9৷৷


ಭಗವಾನ್ the revered one, ತತ್ರ in that forest, ತಸ್ಯ of that holy spot, ಅಭ್ಯಾಶೇ in the vicinity, ಅನಪಾಯಿನಮ್ without being separated from each other even for a moment, ಚರನ್ತಮ್ ranging through the forest, ಚಾರುನಿಸ್ವನಮ್ melodious-voiced, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಯೋ: krauncha birds, ಮಿಥುನಮ್ pair of, ದದರ್ಶ espied.

Sage Valmiki espied a pair of melodious kraunchas. Flying about in each other's in separable company there in its vicinity.
ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತು ಮಿಥುನಾದೇಕಂ ಪುಮಾಂಸಂ ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯ: .

ಜಘಾನ ವೈರನಿಲಯೋ ನಿಷಾದಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಪಶ್ಯತ: ৷৷1.2.10৷৷


ಪಾಪನಿಶ್ಚಯ: of sinful intent, ವೈರನಿಲಯ: full of cruelty, ನಿಷಾದ: a hunter, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಮಿಥುನಾತ್ from that pair, ಏಕಂ ಪುಮಾಂಸಂ ತು one male bird, ತಸ್ಯ ಪಶ್ಯತ: neglecting his very presence, ಜಘಾನ killed.

A sinful and cruel-hearted hunter struck down the male bird of the pair in his very presence.
ತಂ ಶೋಣಿತಪರೀತಾಙ್ಗಂ ವೇಷ್ಟಮಾನಂ ಮಹೀತಲೇ .

ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ತು ನಿಹತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ರುರಾವ ಕರುಣಾಂ ಗಿರಮ್ ৷৷1.2.11৷৷

ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾ ಪತಿನಾ ತೇನ ದ್ವಿಜೇನ ಸಹಚಾರಿಣಾ .

ತಾಮ್ರಶೀರ್ಷೇಣ ಮತ್ತೇನ ಪತ್ರಿಣಾ ಸಹಿತೇನ ವೈ ৷৷1.2.12৷৷


ಪತಿನಾ by her husband, ಸಹಚಾರಿಣಾ by the constant companion, ತಾಮ್ರಶೀರ್ಷೇಣ with copper-crested head, ಮತ್ತೇನ with the one intoxicated by love, ಪತ್ರಿಣಾ by one possessing wings, ಸಹಿತೇನ united, ತೇನ ದ್ವಿಜೇನ from that male companion, ವಿಯುಕ್ತಾ got separated, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ತು the female companion, ನಿಹತಮ್ having been struck down, ಮಹೀತಲೇ on the earth, ವೇಷ್ಟಮಾನಮ್ rolling (in blood), ಶೋಣಿತಪರೀತಾಙ್ಗಮ್ body drenched in blood, ತಮ್ that male bird, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಕರುಣಾಮ್ causing pity, ಗಿರಮ್ words, ರುರಾವ uttered (wailed).

The female companion saw the male bird struck down by the hunter and rolling on the earth, drenched in blood. Separated from her winged comparion with copper-crested head intoxicated with her love, the female companion lifted a piteous wail.
ತದಾ ತು ತಂ ದ್ವಿಜಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ನಿಷಾದೇನ ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ .

ಋಷೇರ್ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಂ ಸಮಪದ್ಯತ ৷৷1.2.13৷৷


ತದಾ then, ನಿಷಾದೇನ by the fowler, ನಿಪಾತಿತಮ್ struck down, ತಂ that, ದ್ವಿಜಮ್ bird, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ: of the righteous-minded, ತಸ್ಯ ಋಷೇ: of that sage, ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಮ್ compassion, ಸಮಪದ್ಯತ filled.

Then, having seen the bird struck down by the fowler, the pious sage Valmiki was filled with compassion.
ತತ: ಕರುಣವೇದಿತ್ವಾದಧರ್ಮೋಯಮಿತಿ ದ್ವಿಜ: .

ನಿಶಾಮ್ಯ ರುದತೀಂ ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀಮಿದಂ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ৷৷1.2.14৷৷


ತತ: then, ದ್ವಿಜ: sage Valmiki, ರುದತೀಮ್ wailing, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀಮ್ female bird, ನಿಶಾಮ್ಯ having heard, ಕರುಣವೇದಿತ್ವಾತ್ moved to compassion, ಅಯಮ್ this act of slaying during mating time, ಅಧರ್ಮ: unrighteous act, ಇತಿ thus, ಇದಮ್ ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ uttered.

Having heard the wailing of the female bird, the sage (Valmiki) moved to pity at this irreligious act uttered the following words.
ಮಾ ನಿಷಾದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಂ ತ್ವಮಗಮಶ್ಶಾಶ್ವತೀಸ್ಸಮಾ: .

ಯತ್ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಮಿಥುನಾದೇಕಮವಧೀ: ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್ ৷৷1.2.15৷৷ 15


ನಿಷಾದ O! Fowler, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯತ್ for which reason, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಮಿಥುನಾತ್ from the pair of krauncha birds, ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್ when they were infatuated by love, ಏಕಮ್ one, ಅವಧೀ: have killed, (ತತ್ for that reason), ಶಾಶ್ವತೀ: permanently, ಸಮಾ: for long years, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಂ glorious, ಮಾ ಗಮ: you will never get.

"O fowler, since you have killed one of the pair of infatuated kraunchas you will be permanently deprived of your position".
ತಸ್ಯೈವಂ ಬ್ರುವತಶ್ಚಿನ್ತಾ ಬಭೂವ ಹೃದಿ ವೀಕ್ಷತಃ .

ಶೋಕಾರ್ತೇನಾಸ್ಯ ಶಕುನೇ: ಕಿಮಿದಂ ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಂ ಮಯಾ ৷৷1.2.16৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this manner, ಬ್ರುವತ: having uttered, ವೀಕ್ಷತ: reflecting, ತಸ್ಯ ಹೃದಿ in his heart, ಅಸ್ಯ ಶಕುನೇ: ಶೋಕಾರ್ತೇನ distressed by the grief of this bird, ಮಯಾ ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಮ್ uttered by me, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಕಿಮ್ what?, ಚಿನ್ತಾ ಬಭೂವ a thought arose.

Brooding over his utterances, he reflected, 'What is this that I uttered in reaction to the grief of this bird?'
ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ಸ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಶ್ಚಕಾರ ಮತಿಮಾನ್ಮತಿಮ್ .

ಶಿಷ್ಯಂ ಚೈವಾಬ್ರವೀದ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಿದಂ ಸ ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವ: ৷৷1.2.17৷৷


ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ: highly learned, ಮತಿಮಾನ್ wise, ಸ: Valmiki, ಮತಿಂ ಚಕಾರ thought, ಸ: ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವ: that pre-eminent one among sages, ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ pondering,ಶಿಷ್ಯಮ್ addressing his disciple, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ statement, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ಚ and said.

Very wise and learned, he (Valmiki), pre-eminent among sages, pondered over it (for a while) and spoke these words to his disciple.
ಪಾದಬದ್ಧೋಕ್ಷರಸಮಸ್ತನ್ತ್ರೀಲಯಸಮನ್ವಿತ: .

ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತೋ ಮೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕೋ ಭವತು ನಾನ್ಯಥಾ ৷৷1.2.18৷৷


ಮೇ for me, ಶೋಕಾರ್ತಸ್ಯ born out of sorrow (of slain bird), ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತ: came out without effort, ಪಾದಬದ್ಧ: consisting of four lines, ಅಕ್ಷರಸಮ: each of equal number of syllables, ತನ್ತ್ರೀಲಯಸಮನ್ವಿತ: with rhythm tuned to the accompaniment of stringed instruments, ಶ್ಲೋಕ: sloka, ಭವತು let it take a form, ಅನ್ಯಥಾ ನ not otherwise.

"Occasioned by the grief-stricken (state of the bird) and composed in rhymed lines each of equal number of syllables tuned to the accompaniment of stringed instruments, let it be known as a sloka and not by any other name".
ಶಿಷ್ಯಸ್ತು ತಸ್ಯ ಬ್ರುವತೋ ಮುನೇರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮನುತ್ತಮಮ್ .

ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ತುಷ್ಟೋಭವದ್ಗುರು: ৷৷1.2.19৷৷


ಶಿಷ್ಯಸ್ತು his disciple on his part, ಬ್ರುವತ: when words were spoken in this manner, ತಸ್ಯ ಮುನೇ: that sage's, ಅನುತ್ತಮಮ್ excellent, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ statement (verse), ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ received (committed to memory), ಸನ್ಹೃಷ್ಟ: well pleased, ಗುರು: spiritual preceptor, ತಸ್ಯ in the matter of his disciple, ತುಷ್ಟ: ಅಭವತ್ was gratified.

His disciple, delighted by the excellent verse composed by the sage, committed it to memory which left his spiritual preceptor pleased.
ಸೋಭಿಷೇಕಂ ತತ: ಕೃತ್ವಾ ತೀರ್ಥೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ .

ತಮೇವ ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ನರ್ಥಮುಪಾವರ್ತತ ವೈ ಮುನಿ: ৷৷1.2.20৷৷


ತತ: thereafter, ಸ: ಮುನಿ: Valmiki maharshi, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ತೀರ್ಥೇ at that holy spot, ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ according to the prescribed ritual, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಮ್ bathing, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having performed, ತಮ್ that, ಅರ್ಥಮೇವ the matter itself, ಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ pondering over, ಉಪಾವರ್ತತ ವೈ returned (to his hermitage).

After having performed his ablution at that holy spot according to the prescribed ritual, the sage (Valmiki) returned (to his hermitage), pondering over the matter.
ಭರದ್ವಾಜಸ್ತತಶ್ಶಿಷ್ಯೋ ವಿನೀತಶ್ಶ್ರುತವಾನ್ಮುನೇಃ .

ಕಲಶಂ ಪೂರ್ಣಮಾದಾಯ ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋನುಜಗಾಮ ಹ ৷৷1.2.21৷৷


ತತ: then, ಶಿಷ್ಯ: disciple, ವಿನೀತ: humble, ಶ್ರುತವಾನ್ learned in scriptures, ಮುನಿ: saint, ಭರದ್ವಾಜ: Bharadwaja, ಪೂರ್ಣಮ್ filled with water, ಕಲಶಮ್ water-pitcher, ಆದಾಯ having received (carrying), ಪೃಷ್ಠತ: behind him, ಅನುಜಗಾಮ ಹ followed.

Then saint Bharadwaja, his disciple humble and learned in scriptures, followed him with a pitcher full (of water).
ಸ ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯಾಶ್ರಮಪದಂ ಶಿಷ್ಯೇಣ ಸಹ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ .

ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟ: ಕಥಾಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚಕಾರ ಧ್ಯಾನಮಾಸ್ಥಿತ: ৷৷1.2.22৷৷


ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ knower of righteousness, ಸ: Valmiki, ಶಿಷ್ಯೇಣ ಸಹ with his disciples, ಆಶ್ರಮಪದಮ್ the hermitage, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ಧ್ಯಾನಮ್ ಆಸ್ಥಿತ: meditating on the incident, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟ: sitting, ಅನ್ಯಾ: other, ಕಥಾ: stories, ಚಕಾರ composed.

Valmiki who knows dharma entered the hermitage along with his disciple and sat in meditation and composed other stories.
ಆಜಗಾಮ ತತೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಲೋಕಕರ್ತಾ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಪ್ರಭು: .

ಚತುರ್ಮುಖೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ತಂ ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ ৷৷1.2.23৷৷


ತತ: at that moment, ಲೋಕಕರ್ತಾ creator of the world, ಪ್ರಭು: lord of the world, ಚತುರ್ಮುಖ: four-faced, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: effulgent, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ Brahma, ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ best among sages, ತಮ್ that Valmiki, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ desirous of seeing, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಆಜಗಾಮ arrived.

At that moment, the effulgent, four-faced Brahma, creator and lord of the world, himself, desirous of seeing him (Valmiki), the best among sages, arrived.
ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿರಥ ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸಹಸೋತ್ಥಾಯ ವಾಗ್ಯತ: .

ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: ಪ್ರಯತೋ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ತಸ್ಥೌ ಪರಮವಿಸ್ಮಿತ: ৷৷1.2.24৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಪ್ರಯತ: purified by austerities, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ: Valmiki, ತಮ್ him, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪರಮವಿಸ್ಮಿತ: was greatly amazed, ಸಹಸಾ immediately, ಉತ್ಥಾಯ got up, ವಾಗ್ಯತ: disciplined in speech, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: ಭೂತ್ವಾ with folded palms, ತಸ್ಥೌ stood.

Greatly surprised to see him, Valmiki, purified by austerities and disciplined in speech, immediately got up and with folded palms stood before him.
ಪೂಜಯಾಮಾಸ ತಂ ದೇವಂ ಪಾದ್ಯಾರ್ಘ್ಯಾಸನವನ್ದನೈ: .

ತಮ್ ಏನಂ ದೇವಮ್ that god, ವಿಧಿವತ್ as enjoined by tradition, ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ bowing with profound reverence, ಅವ್ಯಯಮ್ immutable (Brahma), ಅನಾಮಯಂ ಚ welfare, ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having enquired, ಪಾದ್ಯಾರ್ಘ್ಯಾಸನವನ್ದನೈ: fell at his feet with respectable offerings of reception, a befitting seat, and water for washing feet, ಪೂಜಯಾಮಾಸ worshipped.

Bowing with reverence as enjoined by tradition and having enquired of his well being,
Valmiki worshipped the immutable Brahma by falling at his feet and welcoming him with a seat and water to wash his feet with.
ಅಥೋಪವಿಶ್ಯ ಭಗವಾನಾಸನೇ ಪರಮಾರ್ಚಿತೇ .

ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಯೇ ಮಹರ್ಷಯೇ ಸನ್ದಿದೇಶಾಸನಂ ತತ: ৷৷1.2.26৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಭಗವಾನ್ the omnipotent Brahma, ಪರಮಾರ್ಚಿತೇ highly worshipful, ಆಸನೇ seat, ಉಪವಿಶ್ಯ sat down, ತತಃ from there, ಮಹರ್ಷಯೇ to ascetic, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಯೇ for Valmiki, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ಸನ್ದಿದೇಶ showed.

Lord Brahma sat down on a highly worshipful seat and showed a seat for the ascetic Valmiki to be seated.
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣಾ ಸಮನುಜ್ಞಾತಸ್ಸೋಪ್ಯುಪಾವಿಶದಾಸನೇ .

ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟೇ ತದಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪಿತಾಮಹೇ.

ತದ್ಗತೇನೈವ ಮನಸಾ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿರ್ಧ್ಯಾನಮಾಸ್ಥಿತ: ৷৷1.2.27৷৷


ಸ: ಅಪಿ he (Valmiki) also, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣಾ by lord Brahma, ಸಮನುಜ್ಞಾತ: having been asked, ಆಸನೇ in the seat, ಉಪಾವಿಶತ್ sat down, ತದಾ then, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕಪಿತಾಮಹೇ when that lord Brahma, the grand-sire of the worlds, (ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ in the presence), ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟೇ having been seated, ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ: Valmiki, ತದ್ಗತೇನ ಏವ set only on events (leading to the death of the krauncha bird), ಮನಸಾ by his mind, ಧ್ಯಾನಮ್ thoughts, ಆಸ್ಥಿತ: was absorbed.

Having been ordered by Brahma, he also sat down on a seat. Although seated in the presence of the lord of the worlds, he was absorbed in the thought of events (leading to the death of the krauncha ).
ಪಾಪಾತ್ಮನಾ ಕೃತಂ ಕಷ್ಟಂ ವೈರಗ್ರಹಣಬುದ್ಧಿನಾ .

ಯಸ್ತಾದೃಶಂ ಚಾರುರವಂ ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಂ ಹನ್ಯಾದಕಾರಣಾತ್ ৷৷1.2.28৷৷


ಯ: that hunter, ತಾದೃಶಮ್ such, ಚಾರುರವಮ್ sweet voiced, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಮ್ krauncha bird, ಅಕಾರಣಾತ್ without cause, ಹನ್ಯಾತ್ killed, ವೈರಗ್ರಹಣಬುದ್ಧಿನಾ with hostile feeling of capturing it, ಪಾಪಾತ್ಮನಾ sinful minded, ಕಷ್ಟಂ(ಕರ್ಮ) act, ಕೃತಮ್ was done.

The hunter killed the sweet-voiced krauncha without any cause. That sinful-minded one with hostile feeling of capturing it, had perpetrated this cruel act, he thought.
ಶೋಚನ್ನೇವ ಮುಹು: ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀಮುಪಶ್ಲೋಕಮಿಮಂ ಪುನ: .

ಜಗಾವನ್ತರ್ಗತಮನಾ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಶೋಕಪರಾಯಣ: ৷৷1.2.29৷৷


ಶೋಕಪರಾಯಣ: engrossed in grief, ಅನ್ತರ್ಗತಮನಾ: ಭೂತ್ವಾ having been introspective, ಮುಹು: again and again, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚೀಮ್ ಏವ about female krauncha bird, ಶೋಚನ್ lamenting, ಪುನ: again, ಇಮಮ್ ಶ್ಲೋಕಮ್ this sloka, ಜಗೌ recited.

Grief-stricken, Valmiki having become introspective and lamenting the plight of the female krauncha again and again, recited this sloka.
ತಮುವಾಚ ತತೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ .

ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಏವ ತ್ವಯಾ ಬದ್ಧೋ ನಾತ್ರ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ ವಿಚಾರಣಾ ৷৷1.2.30৷৷


ತತ: then, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ lord Brahma, ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ smiling, ತಂ ಮುನಿಪುಙ್ಗವಮ್ addressing that pre-eminent among sages, ಉವಾಚ spoke, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಬದ್ಧ: composed, ಶ್ಲೋಕ: ಏವ sloka indeed, ಅತ್ರ in this aspect, ವಿಚಾರಣಾ doubt, ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ need not be entertained.

Thereafter lord Brahma smilingly addressed Valmiki, the pre-eminent among sages, saying, "You have indeed composed a sloka.There is no doubt about it".
ಮಚ್ಛನ್ದಾದೇವ ತೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತೇಯಂ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ .

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಚರಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಕುರು ತ್ವಮೃಷಿಸತ್ತಮ ৷৷1.2.31৷৷


ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ O!Brahmarshi, ತೇ ಇಯಮ್ your this, ಸರಸ್ವತೀ speech, ಮಚ್ಛನ್ದಾದೇವ at my will, ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಾ originated, ಋಷಿಸತ್ತಮ O! most excellent ascetic, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಚರಿತಮ್ history, ಸರ್ವಮ್ in entirety, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕುರು compose.

"O!Brahmarshi, at my will, this speech had originated from you. Most excellent ascetic, compose the history of Rama in its entirety (in this metre).
ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನೋ ಗುಣವತೋ ಲೋಕೇ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತ: .

ವೃತ್ತಂ ಕಥಯ ಧೀರಸ್ಯ ಯಥಾ ತೇ ನಾರದಾಚ್ಛ್ರುತಮ್ ৷৷1.2.32৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮನ: of the righteous natured, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಗುಣವತ: of the virtuous, ಧೀಮತ: of the wise, ಧೀರಸ್ಯ of the steadfast, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ history, ತೇ to you, ನಾರದಾತ್ through Narada, ಯಥಾ in whichever manner, ಶ್ರುತಮ್ heard, ಕಥಯ narrate.

Narrate the history of Rama who is renowned for righteousness, virtues, wisdom and steadfastness in the manner you have heard it from sage Narada.
ರಹಸ್ಯಂ ಚ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಂ ಚ ಯದ್ವೃತ್ತಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತ: .

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಸಹಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇಃ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಚ ಸರ್ವಶ: ৷৷1.2.33৷৷

ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಶ್ಚೈವ ಯದ್ವೃತ್ತಂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಂ ಯದಿ ವಾ ರಹ: .

ತಚ್ಚಾಪ್ಯವಿದಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿದಿತಂ ತೇ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ৷৷1.2.34৷৷


ಧೀಮತ: sagacious, ಸಹ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರೇ: along with Lakshmana, ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಚ rakshsas, ರಹಸ್ಯಂ ಚ unknown, ಪ್ರಕಾಶಂ ಚ known (deeds), ಸರ್ವಶ: by all means, ಯತ್ which, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ history, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ about Sita and others, ಪ್ರಕಾಶಂ ಯದಿ ವಾ whether it is known to every body, ರಹೋ ವಾ or unknown, ಯತ್ which, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ history, ತಚ್ಚ that also, ಸರ್ವಮ್ all, ಅವಿದಿತಮಪಿ even not known formerly, ತೇ to you, ವಿದಿತಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will be revealed.

The incidents pertaining to sagacious Rama together with Lakshmana, Sita, Bharata, etc. and the rakshasas - their deeds, thoughts, unknown or known to everybody and even not known to you, will be revealed to you by my grace.
ನ ತೇ ವಾಗನೃತಾ ಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಕಾಚಿದತ್ರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ .

ಕುರು ರಾಮಕಥಾಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಾಂ ಶ್ಲೋಕಬದ್ಧಾಂ ಮನೋರಮಾಮ್ ৷৷1.2.35৷৷


ಅತ್ರ ಕಾವ್ಯೇ In this poem, ತೇ ವಾಕ್ your words, ಕಾಚಿತ್ not even one word, ಅನೃತಾ of untruth, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will not be spoken, ಪುಣ್ಯಾಮ್ sacred, ಮನೋರಮಾಮ್ delightful, ರಾಮಕಥಾಮ್ history of Rama, ಶ್ಲೋಕಬದ್ಧಾಮ್ in the form of slokas, ಕುರು compose.

Not even a single word of yours in this epic will ever prove untruthful. Compose this sacred, delightful story of Rama, set in the form of slokas.
ಯಾವತ್ ಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಗಿರಯಸ್ಸರಿತಶ್ಚ ಮಹೀತಲೇ .

ತಾವದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣಕಥಾ ಲೋಕೇಷು ಪ್ರಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ ৷৷1.2.36৷৷


ಗಿರಯ: mountains, ಸರಿತ: ಚ and rivers, ಮಹೀತಲೇ on this earth, ಯಾವತ್ ಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯನ್ತಿ as long as they
exist, ತಾವತ್ till then, ರಾಮಾಯಣಕಥಾ story of Ramayana, ಲೋಕೇಷು among the people, ಪ್ರಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ will prevail.

As long as the mountains and rivers exist on this earth, the story of Ramayana will prevail among the people.
ಯಾವದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣಕಥಾ ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತಾ ಪ್ರಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ .

ತಾವದೂರ್ಧ್ವಮಧಶ್ಚ ತ್ವಂ ಮಲ್ಲೋಕೇಷು ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ ৷৷1.2.37৷৷


ತ್ವತ್ಕೃತಾ composed by you, ರಾಮಾಯಣಕಥಾ the Ramayana story, ಯಾವತ್ as long as, ಪ್ರಚರಿಷ್ಯತಿ prevails, ತಾವತ್ till then, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಊರ್ಧ್ವಮ್ the upper world, heaven, ಅಧಶ್ಚ the nether world, ಮಲ್ಲೋಕೇಷು in my (Brahmaloka), ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ will reside.

So long as the story of the Ramayana composed by you is remembered in this world, you will live in the upper world, the nether world and Brahmaloka".
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಭಗವಾನ್ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ತತ್ರೈವಾನ್ತರಧೀಯತ .

ತತಸ್ಸಶಿಷ್ಯೋ ಭಗವಾನ್ಮುನಿರ್ವಿಸ್ಮಯಮಾಯಯೌ ৷৷1.2.38৷৷


ಭಗವಾನ್ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ lord Brahma, ಇತಿ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said this, ತತ್ರೈವ there itself, ಅನ್ತರಧೀಯತ vanished, ತತ: then, ಸಶಿಷ್ಯ: along with his disciples, ಭಗವಾನ್ ಮುನಿ: sage Valmiki, ವಿಸ್ಮಯಮ್ astonishment, ಆಯಯೌ attained.

Having spoken these words, lord Brahma vanished. At this he and his disciples were astonished.
ತಸ್ಯ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಸ್ತತಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಜಗುಶ್ಶ್ಲೋಕಮಿಮಂ ಪುನ: .

ಮುಹುರ್ಮುಹು: ಪ್ರೀಯಮಾಣಾ: ಪ್ರಾಹುಶ್ಚ ಭೃಶವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾ: ৷৷1.2.39৷৷


ತತ: then, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಶಿಷ್ಯಾ: disciples, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಮುಹುರ್ಮುಹು: again and again, ಪ್ರೀಯಮಾಣಾ: being delighted, ಪುನ: repeatedly, ಇಮಮ್ this, ಶ್ಲೋಕಮ್ sloka, ಜಗು: chanted, ಭೃಶವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾ: exceedingly surprised, ಪ್ರಾಹುಶ್ಚ spoke about it.

Thereafter, the disciples of Valmiki chanted this sloka again and again in delight. They were greatly astonished and spoke about it often.
ಸಮಾಕ್ಷರೈಶ್ಚತುರ್ಭಿರ್ಯ: ಪಾದೈರ್ಗೀತೋ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಣಾ .

ಸೋನುವ್ಯಾಹರಣಾದ್ಭೂಯಶ್ಶ್ಲೋಕಶ್ಶ್ಲೋಕತ್ವಮಾಗತ: ৷৷1.2.40৷৷


ಯ: which ever, ಸಮಾಕ್ಷರೈ: with equal number of syllables, ಚತುರ್ಭಿ: by four, ಪಾದೈ: parts, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಣಾ
by maharshi, ಗೀತ: as told, ಸ: ಶ್ಲೋಕ: that sloka, ಅನುವ್ಯಾಹರಣಾತ್ because of repeated recitation, ಭೂಯ: again, ಶ್ಲೋಕತ್ವಮ್ gloriousness, ಆಗತ: attained.

This sloka of four lines, each consisting of equal number of syllables, was recited by the maharshi. Constant recitation (by others) elicited admiration (from the listeners).
ತಸ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿರಿಯಂ ಜಾತಾ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇರ್ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನ: .

ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಂ ರಾಮಾಯಣಂ ಕಾವ್ಯಮೀದೃಶೈ: ಕರವಾಣ್ಯಹಮ್ ৷৷1.2.41৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಮ್ entire, ರಾಮಾಯಣಮ್ named Ramayana, ಕಾವ್ಯಮ್ poem, ಈದೃಶೈ: in this metre, ಕರವಾಣಿ shall compose, ಇಯಮ್ ಬುದ್ಧಿ: this thought, ಭಾವಿತಾತ್ಮನ: who is capable of putting thoughts into action, ತಸ್ಯ (ಮಹರ್ಷೇ:) ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೇಃ to Valmiki, ಜಾತಾ occurred.

A thought occurred to Valmiki, who is capable of putting thoughts into action "I shall compose the epic named Ramayana entirely in this metre".
ಉದಾರವೃತ್ತಾರ್ಥಪದೈರ್ಮನೋರಮೈಃ

ತದಾಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಚಕಾರಕೀರ್ತಿಮಾನ್ .

ಸಮಾಕ್ಷರೈಶ್ಶ್ಲೋಕಶತೈರ್ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೋ

ಯಶಸ್ಕರಂ ಕಾವ್ಯಮುದಾರಧೀರ್ಮುನಿ: ৷৷1.2.42৷৷


ಕೀರ್ತಿಮಾನ್ renowned, ಉದಾರಧೀ: sagacious, ಮುನಿ: sage, ತದಾ then, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನ: celebrated, ಅಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಯಶಸ್ಕರಮ್ conferring glory, ಕಾವ್ಯಮ್ poem, ಉದಾರವೃತ್ತಾರ್ಥಪದೈ: in excellent words, meaning and set in good metre, ಮನೋರಮೈ: charming, ಸಮಾಕ್ಷರೈ: equal number of syllables, ಶ್ಲೋಕಶತೈ: hundreds of verses, ಚಕಾರ composed.

The renowned and sagacious sage composed a kavya with hundreds of charming verses, each containing equal number of syllables and excellent meaningful words set in metre, conferring glory on celebrated Rama.
ತದುಪಗತಸಮಾಸಸನ್ಧಿಯೋಗಂ

ಸಮಮಧುರೋಪನತಾರ್ಥವಾಕ್ಯಬದ್ಧಮ್ .

ಉಪಗತಸಮಾಸಸನ್ಧಿಯೋಗಮ್ united with samasas (compound words, phrases), sandhis (pleasing conjunctions of words), ಸಮಮಧುರೋಪನತಾರ್ಥವಾಕ್ಯಬದ್ಧಮ್ sentences composed of lucid, melodious and meaningful phrases, ಮುನಿಪ್ರಣೀತಮ್ composed by ascetic Valmiki, ರಘುವರಚರಿತಮ್ history of Rama, ದಶಶಿರಸ: of the ten-headed Ravana, ವಧಂ ಚ slaying, ನಿಶಾಮಯಧ್ವಮ್ you may listen.

This story of Rama and the killing of Ravana composed by the sage consists of compound words, melodious sandhis and lines composed in lucid, melodious and meaningful phrases. Listen to it.

Thus ends the second sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana in synopsis of the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
