[Description of the four sons of Brahma and the dynasty of Kusanabha-- enraged Wind-god turns the daughters of Kusanabha into humped-back ones.

ப்ரஹ்மயோநிர்மஹாநாஸீத்குஷோ நாம மஹாதபா:.

அக்லிஷ்டவ்ரததர்மஜ்ஞஃ ஸஜ்ஜநப்ரதிபூஜக:৷৷1.32.1৷৷


ப்ரஹ்மயோநி: originated from Brahma, மஹாதபா: great ascetic, அக்லிஷ்டவ்ரததர்மஜ்ஞ: indefatigable vows and conversant with righteousness, ஸஜ்ஜநப்ரதிபூஜக: one who worships pious men, மஹாந் great, குஷோ நாம ஆஸீத் there was one named Kusa.

There was a great ascetic named Kusa, born to Brahma, as ascetic indefatigable in vows, knowldegeable in dharma and a respector of the virtuous.
ஸ மஹாத்மா குலீநாயாஂ யுக்தாயாஂ ஸுகுணோல்பணாந்.

வைதர்ப்யாஂ ஜநயாமாஸ சதுரஸ்ஸதரிஷாந் ஸுதாந்৷৷1.32.2৷৷

குஷாம்பஂ குஷநாபஂ ச அதூர்தரஜஸஂ வஸும்.


ஸ: மஹாத்மா that eminent one, குலீநாயாம் in lady of noble descent, யுக்தாயாம் suitable to him, வைதர்ப்யாம் in the princess of Vidarbha, குஷாம்பம் Kusamba, குஷநாபஂ ச Kusanabha also, அதூர்தரஜஸம் Adhurta Rajasa, வஸும் Vasu, ஸுகுணோல்பணாந் manifesting virtues, ஸதரிஷாந் suitable ones, சதுர: four, ஸுதாந் sons, ஜநயாமாஸ begot.

That great soul, Kusa, married the princess of Vidarbha born in a noble family and a match for him. He begot four virtuous sons who resembled him. They were Kusamba, Kusanabha, Adhurtarajas and Vasu.
தீப்தியுக்தாந் மஹோத்ஸாஹாந் க்ஷத்ரதர்மசிகீர்ஷயா৷৷1.32.3৷৷

தாநுவாச குஷ: புத்ராந் தர்மிஷ்டாந் ஸத்யவாதிந:.


குஷ: Kusa, தீப்தியுக்தாந் lustrous, மஹோத்ஸாஹாந் men of great perseverance, தர்மிஷ்டாந் eager to observe righteousness, ஸத்யவாதிந: men who always speak truth, தாந் புத்ராந் those sons, க்ஷத்ரதர்மசிகீர்ஷயா with a desire to carry out duties of warrior race, உவாச spoke.

Kusa addressed his four brilliant sons who were highly enthusiastic, pious, truthful and were wedded to duties of the warrior race:
க்ரியதாஂ பாலநஂ புத்ரா: தர்மஂ ப்ராப்ஸ்யத புஷ்கலம்৷৷1.32.4৷৷

றஷேஸ்து வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா சத்வாரோ லோகஸம்மதா:.

நிவேஷஂ சக்ரிரே ஸர்வே புராணாஂ நரிவராஸ்ததா৷৷1.32.5৷৷


புத்ரா: O! My sons, பாலநம் governance, க்ரியதாம் may be done, புஷ்கலம் immense, தர்மஂ merit, ப்ராப்ஸ்யத you acquire, ததா then, றஷே: that rishi's, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, லோகஸம்மதா: men revered in the world, சத்வார: four, நரிவரா: best among men, ஸர்வே all of them, புராணாம் of the cities, நிவேஷம் abodes, சக்ரிரே constructed.

"O my sons, govern with righteousness so that you will acquire immense merit'. Hearing the words of the rishi, the four sons who were the best among men and revered in the world constructed four cities as their abodes.
குஷாம்பஸ்து மஹாதேஜா: கௌஷாம்பீமகரோத்புரீம் .

குஷநாபஸ்து தர்மாத்மா புரஂ சக்ரே மஹோதயம்৷৷1.32.6৷৷


மஹாதேஜாஃ man possessing heroic lustre, குஷாம்பஸ்து Kushamba on his part, கௌஷாம்பீம் Kaushambi, புரீம் city, அகரோத் constructed, தர்மாத்மா righteous, குஷநாபஸ்து Kushanabha on his part, மஹோதயம் Mahodaya, புரம் city, சக்ரே constructed.

The brilliant Kushamba and the righteous Kushanabha constructed the cities of
Kaushanbi and Mahodaya (as their capital) respectively.
அதூர்தரஜஸோ ராம! தர்மாரண்யஂ மஹீபதி:.

சக்ரே புரவரஂ ராஜா வஸுஷ்சக்ரே கிரிவ்ரஜம்৷৷1.32.7৷৷


ராம O! Rama, அதூர்தரஜஸ: Adhurtarajasa, மஹீபதி: king, தர்மாரண்யம் Dharmaranya, புரவரம் best of cities, சக்ரே constructed, ராஜா king, வஸு: Vasu, கிரிவ்ரஜம் city of Girivraja, சக்ரே constructed.

O Rama! king Adhurtarajasa constructed Dharmaranya, the best of cities and king Vasu, the city of Girivrajam.
ஏஷா வஸுமதீ ராம! வஸோஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாத்மந:.

ஏதே ஷைலவரா: பஞ்ச ப்ரகாஷந்தே ஸமந்தத:৷৷1.32.8.


ராம O! Rama, ஏஷா this, மஹாத்மந: of the magnanimous, தஸ்ய வஸோ: that Vasu's, வஸுமதீ land, ஸமந்தத: surrounded by, பஞ்ச five, ஷைலவரா: excellent mountains, ப்ரகாஷந்தே shining.

O Rama! this place where we are (called Vasumati) belongs to the magnanimous king Vasu. This is surrounded by five great shining mountains.
ஸுமாகதீ நதீ ரம்யா மகதாந் விஷ்ருதாயயௌ.

பஞ்சாநாஂ ஷைலமுக்யாநாஂ மத்யே மாலேவ ஷோபதே৷৷1.32.9৷৷


ரம்யா delightful, விஷ்ருதா renowned, ஸுமாகதீ நதீ river Sumagadhi, மகதாந் in Magadha, ஆயயௌ is flowing, பஞ்சாநாம் of the five, ஷைலமுக்யாநாம் best of mountains, மத்யே amidst, மாலா இவ like a garland, ஷோபதே is shining.

The delightful and renowned river Sumagadhi (known as Sona), flowing in the country of Magadha, looks beautiful like a garland amidst five great mountains.
ஸைஷா ஹி மாகதீ ராம வஸோஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாத்மந:.

பூர்வாபிசரிதா ராம! ஸுக்ஷேத்ரா ஸஸ்யமாலிநீ৷৷1.32.10৷৷


ராம Rama, ஸா ஏஷா மாகதீ the same Magadhi river, மஹாத்மந: of the magnanimous, தஸ்ய வஸோ: pertains to Vasu, பூர்வாபிசரிதா flowing from east, ஸுக்ஷேத்ரா with fertile fields, ஸஸ்யமாலிநீ surrounded by crops as a garland.

Rama, this Magadhi river, of great Vasu flows from the east surrounded by fertile crops fields like a garland.
குஷநாபஸ்து ராஜர்ஷி: கந்யாஷதமநுத்தமம்.

ஜநயாமாஸ தர்மாத்மா கரிதாச்யாஂ ரகுநந்தந!৷৷1.32.11৷৷


ரகுநந்தந O! Prince Raghu, தர்மாத்மா the virtuous one, ராஜர்ஷி: rajarshi (a kshtriya who governs kingdom in saintly detached way), குஷநாப: து Kusanabha, கரிதாச்யாம் in a nymph named Ghritachi, அநுத்தமம் extremely beautiful, கந்யாஷதம் one hundred daughters, ஜநயாமாஸ begot.

O scion of the Raghu family, the virtuous rajarshi Kusanabha begot one hundred beautiful daughters through a nymph named Ghritachi.
தாஸ்து யௌவநஷாலிந்யோ ரூபவத்ய ஸ்ஸ்வலங்கரிதா:.

உத்யாநபூமிமாகம்ய ப்ராவரிஷீவ ஷதஹ்ரதா:৷৷1.32.12৷৷

காயந்த்யோ நரித்யமாநாஷ்ச வாதயந்த்யஷ்ச ஸர்வஷ:.

ஆமோதஂ பரமஂ ஜக்முர்வராபரணபூஷிதா:৷৷1.32.13৷৷


யௌவநஷாலிந்ய: resplendent with youth, ரூபவத்ய: beautiful, தா: they, ஸ்வலங்கரிதா: well adorned, உத்யாநபூமிம் pleasure-garden, ஆகம்ய having reached, ப்ராவரிஷி in the rainy season, ஷதஹ்ரதா: இவ like lightenings, காயந்த்ய: singing, நரித்யமாநாஷ்ச dancing, வாதயந்த்ய: playing on instruments, வராபரணபூஷிதா: decked with all ornaments, ஸர்வஷ: moving in all directions, பரமம் great, ஆமோதம் delight, ஜக்மு: obtained.

Those well-adorned, beautiful, young maidens in the pleasure-garden looked like lightnings in the rainy season. Bedecked with fine ornaments they were singing, dancing, playing on instruments and moving in all directions in great delight.
அத தாஷ்சாருஸர்வாங்க்யோ ரூபேணாப்ரதிமா புவி.

உத்யாநபூமிமாகம்ய தாரா இவ கநாந்தரே৷৷1.32.14৷৷


அத there after, சாருஸர்வாங்க்ய: having all beautiful limbs, ரூபேண in beauty, புவி on earth, அப்ரதிமா: unparalleled, தா: those maidens, உத்யாநபூமிம் pleasure-garden, ஆகம்ய having reached, கநாந்தரே in the midst of clouds, தாரா: இவ like stars (appeared).

With beautiful limbs of unparalleled beauty on earth, they shone in the pleasure-garden like stars in the midst of clouds.
தாஸ்ஸர்வகுணஸம்பந்நா ரூபயௌவநஸஂயுதா:.

தரிஷ்ட்வா ஸர்வாத்மகோ வாயுரிதஂ வசநமப்ரவீத்৷৷1.32.15৷৷


ஸர்வாத்மக: the all pervading one, வாயு: wind-god, ஸர்வகுணஸம்பந்நா: those women endowed with all virtues, ரூபயௌவநஸஂயுதா: blessed with youth and beauty, தா: them, தரிஷ்ட்வா having seen, இதம் these, வசநம் words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

At the sight of the maidens embellished with all virtues and youth and beauty, the all-pervading Wind-god addressed them these words:
அஹஂ வ: காமயே ஸர்வா பார்யா மம பவிஷ்யத.

மாநுஷஸ்த்யஜ்யதாஂ பாவஃ தீர்கமாயுரவாப்ஸ்யத৷৷1.32.16৷৷


அஹம் I, வ: ஸர்வா: all of you, காமயே I am loving, மம my, பார்யா: wives, பவிஷ்யத you may agree to become, மாநுஷ: mortal, பாவ: feeling, த்யஜ்யதாம் may be abandoned, தீர்கம் long duration, ஆயு: of life, அவாப்ஸ்யத you may attain.

I request you all to be my wives. You will leave this feeling of mortality and attain a
long life.
சலஂ ஹி யௌவநஂ நித்யஂ மாநுஷேஷு விஷேஷத:.

அக்ஷய்யஂ யௌவநஂ ப்ராப்தாஃ அமர்யஷ்ச பவிஷ்யத৷৷1.32.17৷৷


நித்யம் always, யௌவநம் youth, சலஂ ஹி is unstable, மாநுஷேஷு in human beings, விஷேஷத: especially, அக்ஷய்யம் permanent (not liable to deterioration), யௌவநம் youth, ப்ராப்தா: you attain, அமர்ய: ச immortal women, பவிஷ்யத will become.

Youth is always unstable, especially in human beings. If you marry me, you will be ever youthful like devatas.
தஸ்ய தத்வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா வாயோரக்லிஷ்டகர்மண:.

அபஹாஸ்ய ததோ வாக்யஂ கந்யாஷதமதாப்ரவீத் ৷৷1.32.18৷৷


தத: thereafter, அக்லிஷ்டகர்மண: of him who accompanies pious and wise acts, தஸ்ய வாயோ: that wind-god's, தத் வசநம் those words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, அபஹாஸ்ய ridiculing him, கந்யாஷதம் hundred maidens, அத thereafter, வாக்யம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

At the works of the untiringly blowing Wind-god the lunged maidens laughed and said:
அந்தஷ்சரஸி பூதாநாஂ ஸர்வேஷாஂ த்வஂ ஸுரோத்தம! .

ப்ரபாவஜ்ஞா: ஸ்ம தே ஸர்வா: கிமஸ்மாநவமந்யஸே৷৷1.32.19৷৷


ஸுரோத்தம O! Best among devatas, த்வம் you, ஸர்வேஷாம் of everyone, பூதாநாம் living beings, அந்த: within, சரஸி you move, ஸர்வா: all of us, தே your, ப்ரபாவஜ்ஞா: ஸ்ம knowers of your valour, அஸ்மாந் us, கிம் அவமந்யஸே why are you insulting.

"O best among devatas! you move within all living beings, we feel your impact. Why do you insult us?
குஷநாபஸுதாஸ்ஸர்வா: ஸமர்தாஸ்த்வாஂ ஸுரோத்தம!.

ஸ்தாநாச்ச்யாவயிதுஂ தேவஂ ரக்ஷாமஸ்து தபோ வயம்৷৷1.32.20৷৷


ஸுரோத்தம O! Best among devatas, ஸர்வா: வயஂ all of us, குஷநாபஸுதா: daughters of Kusanabha, தேவம் the divine one, த்வாம் you, ஸ்தாநாத் from your authority, ச்யாவயிதும் to pull down, ஸமர்தா: து are capable, but, தப: ascetic merit of a virgin, ரக்ஷாம: we are protecting.

"O best among devatas! we are daughters of Kusanabha, We are capable of pulling you down from your position. We are safe-guarding our ascetic merit as virgins (we could curse you to save our ascetic merit)" of Kusnabha.
மாபூத்ஸ காலோ துர்மேத: பிதரஂ ஸத்யவாதிநம்.

நாவமந்யஸ்வ தர்மேண ஸ்வயஂ வரமுபாஸ்மஹே৷৷1.32.21৷৷


துர்மேத: O! Foolish one, ஸத்யவாதிநம் always speaking truth, பிதரம் our sire, ந அவமந்யஸ்வ you may not dishonour, தர்மேண by ones own duty, ஸ்வயம் personally, வரம் bridegroom, உபாஸ்மஹே will serve, ஸ: that, கால: time, மாபூத் let not come.

O wicked one, do not dishonour our father who always speaks the truth. He will choose the bridegrooms righteously. Do not invite death (father may be the cause of your death).
பிதா ஹி ப்ரபுரஸ்மாகஂ தைவதஂ பரமஂ ஹி ந:.

யஸ்ய நோ தாஸ்யதி பிதா ஸ நோ பர்தா பவிஷ்யதி৷৷1.32.22৷৷


அஸ்மாகம் for us, பிதா our father, ப்ரபு: ஹி is lord indeed, ஸ: he, பரமம் great, தைவதம் god, பிதா father, ந: for us, யஸ்ய to whom so ever, தாஸ்யதி gives, ஸ: he, ந: for us, பர்தா husband, பவிஷ்யதி will become.

Our father is our lord. Our father is god to us. Whomsoever our father offers us shall become our husband".
தாஸாஂ தத்வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா வாயு: பரமகோபந:.

ப்ரவிஷ்ய ஸர்வகாத்ராணி பபஞ்ஜ பகவாந் ப்ரபு:৷৷1.32.23৷৷


தாஸாம் those maidens', தத் வசநம் those words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, ப்ரபு: lord, the powerful one, பகவாந் the venerable one, வாயு: wind-god, பரமகோபந: exceedingly enraged, ஸர்வகாத்ராணி all the limbs of their body, ப்ரவிஷ்ய having entered, பபஞ்ஜ twisted.

Having heard the words of those maidens, the most powerful and venerable Wind-god became furious. He entered all the limbs of their bodies, twisted and distorted them.
தா: கந்யா வாயுநா பக்நா விவிஷுர்நரிபதேர்கரிஹம்.

ப்ராபதந் புவி ஸம்ப்ராந்தாஸ்ஸலஜ்ஜா ஸ்ஸாஸ்ரலோசநா:৷৷1.32.24৷৷


வாயுநா by wind-god, பக்நா: shattered, தா: கந்யா: those maidens, நரிபதே: king's, கரிஹம் residence, விவிஷு: entered, ஸஂப்ராந்தா: agitated, ஸலஜ்ஜா: overtaken by shame, ஸாஸ்ரலோசநா: with tears filling their eyes, புவி on the ground, ப்ராபதந் fell down.

Their bodies disfigured and shattered by the Wind-god, the maidens with tears flowing from their eyes entered the palace and fell down on the ground, agitated and overtaken by shame.
ஸ ச தா தயிதா தீநா: கந்யா: பரமஷோபநா:.

தரிஷ்ட்வா பக்நாஸ்ததா ராஜா ஸம்ப்ராந்த இதமப்ரவீத்৷৷1.32.25৷৷


ஸ: ராஜா the king, ததா then, தயிதா: beloved, தீநா: distressed, பரமஷோபநா: extremely beautiful, கந்யா: daughters, பக்நா: shattered, தரிஷ்ட்வா having seen, ஸம்ப்ராந்த: agitated, இதம் these words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

The king saw his extremely beautiful beloved daughters distressed and shattered and spoke these words with bewilderment.
கிமிதஂ கத்யதாஂ புத்ர்ய: கோ தர்மமவமந்யதே.

குப்ஜா: கேந கரிதா: ஸர்வா வேஷ்டந்த்யோ நாபிபாஷத.

ஏவஂ ராஜா விநிஷ்ஷ்வஸ்ய ஸமாதிஂ ஸந்ததே தத:৷৷1.32.26৷৷


புத்ர்ய: O! Daughters, இதம் this, கிம் what?, க: who?, தர்மம் virtue, அவமந்யதே is disregarding, கத்யதாம் let it be told, ஸர்வா: all of you, குப்ஜா: hump backed ones, கேந கரிதா: by whom are you disfigured, வேஷ்டந்த்யஃ encircling, நாபிபாஷத you are not speaking, ராஜா king, ஏவம் in this way, விநிஷ்வஸ்ய heaved a sigh, தத: then, ஸமாதிம் concentration of mind, ஸந்ததே attained.

"O daughters! What has happened? Who has dishonoured virtue? Say it at once. Who has made you hunch-backed? Standing roud me, why are you dumb?" The king heaved a sigh and entered into a state of samadhi.
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே த்வாத்ரிஂஷஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
