ரகுநந்தந O! Rama, ஸகரோ ராஜா king Sagara, புத்ராந் sons, சிரகதாந் having gone for a long time, ஜ்ஞாத்வா realising, ஸ்வதேஜஸா by his own lusture, தீப்யமாநம் resplendent, நப்தாரம் addressing grand son, அப்ரவீத் said:
"O Delight of the Raghus, king Sagara, realising that his sons had left long ago said to his grandson Anshuman resplendent with his own lustre:
ஷூரஷ்ச கரிதவித்யஷ்ச பூர்வைஸ்துல்யோஸி தேஜஸா.
பிதரிணாஂ கதிமந்விச்ச யேந சாஷ்வோபவாஹித:৷৷1.41.2৷৷
பிதரிணாஂ கதிமந்விச்ச யேந சாஷ்வோபவாஹித:৷৷1.41.2৷৷
ஷூரஷ்ச valiant, கரிதவித்யஷ்ச acquired knowledge in various fields, தேஜஸா by lustre, பூர்வை: with your ancestors, துல்ய: அஸி you are equal, பிதரிணாம் your ancestors, கதிம் path, அந்விச்ச search, அஷ்வ: horse, யேந by whom, அபவாஹித: is carried away.
'You are valiant. You have acquired knowledge (in various fields). You are illustrious like your ancestors. Pursue the track taken by your uncles and by the thief who ran away with the horse'.
அந்தர்பௌமாநி ஸத்த்வாநி வீர்யவந்தி மஹாந்தி ச.

அந்தர்பௌமாநி in the depths of earth, ஸத்த்வாநி beings, வீர்யவந்தி possess prowess, மஹாந்தி ச are also mighty, த்வம் you, தேஷாம் theirs, ப்ரதிகாதார்தம் to destroy, ஸாஸ்த்ரம் with weapons, கார்முகம் bow, கரிஹ்ணீஷ்வ hold.
'Creatures in the depths of the earth are powerful and mighty. Carry with you a bow and weapons to counter their attack'.
அபிவாத்யாபிவாத்யாஂஸ்த்வஂ ஹத்வா விக்நகராநபி.
ஸித்தார்தஸ்ஸந்நிவர்தஸ்வ மம யஜ்ஞஸ்ய பாரக:৷৷1.41.4৷৷

த்வம் you, அபிவாத்யாந் men who deserve to be honoured, அபிவாத்ய after honouring, விக்நகராந் those causing obstacles to sacrifice, ஹத்வா by killing, ஸித்தார்த: ஸந் having accomplished the purpose, மம my, யஜ்ஞஸ்ய sacrifice's, பாரக: you ensure completion of my sacrifice, நிவர்தஸ்வ come back.
'Honour those who deserve it. Kill those who cause obstacles to sacrifice. Come back with your mission accomplishing. And ensure the (successful) completion of my sacrifice'.
ஏவமுக்தோஂஷுமாந்ஸம்யக் ஸகரேண மஹாத்மநா.

அஂஷுமாந் Anshuman, மஹாத்மநா by the magnanimous, ஸகரேண Sagara, ஏவம் in this way, ஸம்யக் thoroughly, உக்த: spoken, தநு: bow, கட்கஂ ச scimitar, ஆதாய taking, லகுவிக்ரம: rapid strides, ஜகாம had set out.
"Having been throughly instructed by the high-souled Sagara in this way, Anshuman left with rapid strides carrying a scimitar and a bow.
ஸ காதஂ பிதரிபிர்மார்கமந்தர்பௌமஂ மஹாத்மபி:.
ப்ராபத்யத நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட தேந ராஜ்ஞாபிசோதித:৷৷1.41.6৷৷

நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட O! Best among men, ஸ: he, ராஜ்ஞா by king, அபிசோதித: directed, மஹாத்மபி: by the noble, பிதரிபி: uncles, அந்தர்பௌமம் in the depths of earth, காதம் dug, மார்கம் path, ப்ராபத்யத followed.
O Best among men! directed by the king (Sagara), Anshuman followed the path taken by his noble uncles into the depths of the earth.
தைத்யதாநவரக்ஷோபி: பிஷாசபதகோரகை:.
பூஜ்யமாநஂ மஹாதேஜா திஷாகஜமபஷ்யத৷৷1.41.7৷৷

மஹாதேஜா: exceedingly valiant, தைத்யதாநவரக்ஷோபி: daityas, danavas, rakshasas, பிஷாசபதகோரகை: pisachas, birds and serpents, பூஜ்யமாநம் worshipped by, திஷாகஜம் elephant of the quarter, அபஷ்யத beheld.
Exceedingly valiant Ashuman beheld the elephant of the quarter worshipped by daityas, danavas, rakshasas, pisachas, birds and serpents.
ஸ தஂ ப்ரதக்ஷிணஂ கரித்வா பரிஷ்ட்வா சாபி நிராமயம்.
பிதரிந் ஸ பரிபப்ரச்ச வாஜிஹர்தாரமேவ ச৷৷1.41.8৷৷

ஸ: he, தஂ ப்ரதக்ஷிணஂ கரித்வா having circumambulated that elephant, நிராமயம் well-being, பரிஷ்ட்வா சாபி having enquired, பிதரிந் about the younger brothers of his father, வாஜிஹர்தாரமேவ ச about the person who had stolen the sacrificial horse, பரிபப்ரச்ச enquired.
Having circumambulated the elephant, he (Anshuman) enquired about his well-being, the where abouts of his uncles and also about the one who had stolen the sacrificial horse.
திஷாகஜஸ்து தச்ச்ருத்வா ப்ரத்யாஹாஂஷுமதோ வச:.
ஆஸமஞ்ஜ கரிதார்தஸ்த்வஂ ஸஹாஷ்வஷ்ஷீக்ரமேஷ்யஸி৷৷1.41.9৷৷
ஆஸமஞ்ஜ கரிதார்தஸ்த்வஂ ஸஹாஷ்வஷ்ஷீக்ரமேஷ்யஸி৷৷1.41.9৷৷
திஷாகஜஸ்து elephant of the quarter, அஂஷுமத: Anshman's, தத் வசஃ those words, ஷ்ருத்வா having listened to, ப்ரத்யாஹ replied, ஆஸமஞ்ஜ O! Son of Asamanjasa, Anshuman, த்வஂ you, கரிதார்த: having gained the object, ஸஹாஷ்வ: with horse, ஷ்ரீக்ரம் soon, ஏஷ்யஸி will go (back).
Having listened to the words of Anshuman the elephant of the quarter replied, 'O
Anshuman, son of Asamanjasa! having fulfilled your objective, you will go back soon with the horse'.
தஸ்ய தத்வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா ஸர்வாநேவ திஷாகஜாந்.
யதாக்ரமஂ யதாந்யாயஂ ப்ரஷ்டுஂ ஸமுபசக்ரமே৷৷1.41.10৷৷
யதாக்ரமஂ யதாந்யாயஂ ப்ரஷ்டுஂ ஸமுபசக்ரமே৷৷1.41.10৷৷
தஸ்ய his (elephant's), தத் வசநம் those words, ஷ்ருத்வா having listened to, ஸர்வாநேவ all of them, திஷாகஜாந் elephants of the quarters, யதாக்ரமம் successively, யதாந்யாயம் with due respect, ப்ரஷ்டும் to enquire, உபசக்ரமே commenced.
Having listened to the words of the elephant, Anshuman started enquring the well being of each of the guardians (elephants) of the quarters successively with due respect:
தைஷ்ச ஸர்வைர்திஷாபாலைர்வாக்யஜ்ஞைர்வாக்யகோவிதை:.
பூஜிதஸ்ஸஹயஷ்சைவ கந்தாஸீத்யபிசோதித:৷৷1.41.11৷৷
பூஜிதஸ்ஸஹயஷ்சைவ கந்தாஸீத்யபிசோதித:৷৷1.41.11৷৷
வாக்யஜ்ஞை: knowers of essence of words, வாக்யகோவிதை: proficient in the application of words, ஸர்வை: by all, தை: திஷாபாலை: by those mighty elephants, பூஜித: honoured, ஸஹய: with the horse, கந்தாஸி இதி you will go back, அபிசோதித: was directed.
All those elephants of the quarters were knowers of the essence of words and proficient in the right use of words. Treating him kindly the elephants encouraged him saying, 'You will go back with the horse'.
தேஷாஂ தத்வசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா ஜகாம லகுவிக்ரம:.
பஸ்மராஷீகரிதா யத்ர பிதரஸ்தஸ்ய ஸாகரா:৷৷1.41.12৷৷
பஸ்மராஷீகரிதா யத்ர பிதரஸ்தஸ்ய ஸாகரா:৷৷1.41.12৷৷
தேஷாம் their, தத்வசநம் those words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, லகுவிக்ரம: with quick paces, தஸ்ய his, பிதர: younger brothers of his father, ஸாகரா: sons of Sagara, யத்ர where, பஸ்மராஷீகரிதா: were reduced into heaps of ashes, ஜகாம had gone.
Hearing their words with a quick pace where he reached the place his uncles, sons of Sagara were reduced to heaps of ashes.
ஸ து:கவஷமாபந்நஸ்த்வஸமஞ்ஜஸுதஸ்ததா.
சுக்ரோஷ பரமார்தஸ்து வதாத்தேஷாஂ ஸுது:கித:৷৷1.41.13৷৷
சுக்ரோஷ பரமார்தஸ்து வதாத்தேஷாஂ ஸுது:கித:৷৷1.41.13৷৷
ததா then, ஸ: he, அஸமஞ்ஜஸுத: son of Asamanjasa, து:கவஷம் possessed by grief, ஆபந்ந: having reached, பரமார்த: greatly distressed, தேஷாம் their, வதாத் by destruction, ஸுது:கித: greatly grieved, சுக்ரோஷ cried out.
Then the son of Asamanjasa, overwhelmed with sorrow and deeply distressed at their destruction, bewailed with great grief.
யஜ்ஞீயஂ ச ஹயஂ தத்ர சரந்தமவிதூரத:.
ததர்ஷ புருஷவ்யாக்ரோ து:கஷோகஸமந்வித:৷৷1.41.14৷৷
ததர்ஷ புருஷவ்யாக்ரோ து:கஷோகஸமந்வித:৷৷1.41.14৷৷
து:கஷோகஸமந்வித: possessed by grief and sorrow, புருஷவ்யாக்ர: that tiger like brave one among men, அவிதூரத: nearby, சரந்தம் grazing, யஜ்ஞீயம் sacrificial, ஹயம் horse, ததர்ஷ beheld.
Possessed by grief and tears, Anshuman, that tiger among men, beheld the sacrificial horse grazing nearby.
ஸ தேஷாஂ ராஜபுத்ராணாஂ கர்துகாமோ ஜலக்ரியாம் .
ஸலிலார்தீ மஹாதேஜா ந சாபஷ்யஜ்ஜலாஷயம் ৷৷1.41.15৷৷
ஸலிலார்தீ மஹாதேஜா ந சாபஷ்யஜ்ஜலாஷயம் ৷৷1.41.15৷৷
மஹாதேஜா: highly lustrous, ஸ: he, தேஷாம் for those, ராஜபுத்ராணாம் princes, ஜலக்ரியாம் presenting libations of waters (to the manes of the deceased), கர்துகாம: with intention of doing, ஸலிலார்தீ seeking water, ஜலாஷயம் reservoir of water, ந ச அபஷ்யத் could not see.
With the intention of performing traditional funeral rites with water for the deceased princes, highly lustrous Anshuman looked around for water but could not see any
reservoir of water (in the neighbourhood).
விஸார்ய நிபுணாஂ தரிஷ்டிஂ ததோபஷ்யத்ககாதிபம் .
பிதரிணாஂ மாதுலஂ ராம! ஸுபர்ணமநிலோபமம்৷৷1.41.16৷৷
பிதரிணாஂ மாதுலஂ ராம! ஸுபர்ணமநிலோபமம்৷৷1.41.16৷৷
ராம O! Rama, தத: afterwards, நிபுணாம் intelligent, தரிஷ்டிம் glances, விஸார்ய extending, பிதரிணாம் uncles', மாதுலம் maternal uncle, ககாதிபம் lord of the eagles, அநிலோபமம் resembling wind in swiftness, ஸுபர்ணம் Garuda (brother of Suparna, the mother of princes), அபஷ்யத் beheld.
O Rama! with his keen eyes, he (Anshuman) marked Suparna, the maternal uncle of his uncles, lord of the eagles (Garuda) bestowed with the swiftness of the wind.
ஸ சைவமப்ரவீத்வாக்யஂ வைநதேயோ மஹாபல :.
மா ஷுச: புருஷவ்யாக்ர! வதோயஂ லோகஸம்மத:৷৷1.41.17৷৷
மா ஷுச: புருஷவ்யாக்ர! வதோயஂ லோகஸம்மத:৷৷1.41.17৷৷
மஹாபல: highly powerful, ஸ: வைநதேய: Garuda, son of Vinata, (ஏநம் addressing him), வாக்யம் words, ஏவஂ thus, அப்ரவீத் said, புருஷவ்யாக்ர O! Tiger among men, மா ஷுச: do not grieve, அயஂ வத: this act of assasination, லோகஸம்மத: is aimed for the welfare of the three worlds.
Highly powerful Garuda, son of Vinata, addressing Anshuman said 'O Tiger among men! do not grieve. This act of assasination is meant for the welfare of the three worlds'.
கபிலேநாப்ரமேயேந தக்தா ஹீமே மஹாபலா:.
ஸலிலஂ நார்ஹஸி ப்ராஜ்ஞ தாதுமேஷாஂ ஹி லௌகிகம்৷৷1.41.18৷৷
ஸலிலஂ நார்ஹஸி ப்ராஜ்ஞ தாதுமேஷாஂ ஹி லௌகிகம்৷৷1.41.18৷৷
மஹாபலா: highly valiant, இமே these, அப்ரமேயேந by one who has boundless power, கபிலேந by Kapila, தக்தா: ஹி have been burnt indeed, ப்ராஜ்ஞ O! Sagacious one, லௌகிகம் worldly (ordinary), ஸலிலம் water, தாதும் to offer, நார்ஹஸி is not proper on your part.
'Your valiant uncles have been burnt by Kapila of boundless power. O Sagcious one! performing traditional rites with ordinary water is not proper'.
கங்கா ஹிமவதோ ஜ்யேஷ்டா துஹிதா புருஷர்ஷப!.
தஸ்யாஂ குரு மஹாபாஹோ! பிதரிணாஂ து ஜலக்ரியாம்৷৷1.41.19৷৷
தஸ்யாஂ குரு மஹாபாஹோ! பிதரிணாஂ து ஜலக்ரியாம்৷৷1.41.19৷৷
புருஷர்ஷப O! Best among men, ஹிமவத: Himavan's, ஜ்யேஷ்டா eldest daughter, கங்கா Ganga, மஹாபாஹோ O! Mighty armed one, பிதரிணாம் yours uncles', ஜலக்ரியாம் traditional rites with water, தஸ்யாம் in her (those waters), குரு perform.
'O Best among men! O Mighty-armed one! perform the traditional rites of your uncles with water from river Ganga, the eldest daughter of Himavat'.
பஸ்மராஷீகரிதாநேதாந் ப்லாவயேல்லோகபாவநீ.
தயா க்லிந்நமிதஂ பஸ்ம கங்கயா லோககாந்தயா৷৷1.41.20৷৷
ஷஷ்டிஂ புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி ஸ்வர்கலோகஂ ச நேஷ்யதி.
தயா க்லிந்நமிதஂ பஸ்ம கங்கயா லோககாந்தயா৷৷1.41.20৷৷
ஷஷ்டிஂ புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி ஸ்வர்கலோகஂ ச நேஷ்யதி.
லோகபாவநீ purifier of the three worlds, that Ganga, பஸ்மராஷீகரிதாந் reduced to heaps of ash, ஏதாந் these, ப்லாவயேத் will sanctify, லோககாந்தயா by the beloved one of the world, தயா கங்கயா by that Ganga, க்லிந்நம் inundated, இதஂ பஸ்ம these heaps of ash, ஷஷ்டிஂ புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி sixty thousand sons, ஸ்வர்கலோகம் heavens ச நேஷ்யதி will take also.
Ganga, the purifier of the three worlds, will sanctify your uncles reduced to heaps of ashes. These heaps when inundated by waters of Ganga, beloved of the worlds, will take all the sixty thousand sons to heaven.
கச்ச சாஷ்வஂ மஹாபாக தஂ கரிஹ்ய புருஷர்ஷப!৷৷1.41.21৷৷
யஜ்ஞஂ பைதாமஹஂ வீர ஸஂவர்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி.
யஜ்ஞஂ பைதாமஹஂ வீர ஸஂவர்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி.
மஹாபாக O! Highly fortunate one, புருஷர்ஷப O! Best among men, தம் அஷ்வம் that horse, கரிஹ்ய taking, கச்ச go back, வீர O! hero, பைதாமஹம் grand father's, யஜ்ஞம் sacrifice, ஸஂவர்தயிதும் to complete, அர்ஹஸி it behoves of you.
'O Highly fortunate one! O Best among men! go back with that horse. O Hero! It
behoves of you to complete the sacrifice undertaken by your grandfather'.
ஸுபர்ணவசநஂ ஷ்ருத்வா ஸோஂஷுமாநதிவீர்யவாந் ৷৷1.41.22৷৷
த்வரிதஂ ஹயமாதாய புநராயாந்மஹாயஷா:.
த்வரிதஂ ஹயமாதாய புநராயாந்மஹாயஷா:.
அதிவீர்யவாந் exceedingly powerful, மஹாயஷா: highly renowned, அஂஷுமாந் Anshuman, ஸுபர்ணவசநம் words of Suparna, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, த்வரிதம் quickly, ஹயம் horse, ஆதாய taking hold of, புந: again, ஆயாத் returned.
Exceedingly powerful and highly renowned Anshuman, on hearing the words of Garuda returned quickly to the capital with the horse৷৷
ததோ ராஜாநமாஸாத்ய தீக்ஷிதஂ ரகுநந்தந!৷৷1.41.23৷৷
ந்யவேதயத்யதாவரித்தஂ ஸுபர்ணவசநஂ ததா.
ந்யவேதயத்யதாவரித்தஂ ஸுபர்ணவசநஂ ததா.
ரகுநந்தந O! Rama, தீக்ஷிதம் one who is initiated into ceremony, ராஜாநம் king, ஆஸாத்ய having reached, யதாவரித்தம் in conformity with what had happened, ததா faithfully, ஸுபர்ணவசநம் words of Suparna, ந்யவேதயத் communicated.
O Descendant of the Raghus (Rama), having reached the king who had been initiated into the ceremony, Anshuman communicated faithfully to him all that had happened. He also reported the words Suparna had said.
தச்ச்ருத்வா கோரஸங்காஷஂ வாக்யமஂஷுமதோ நரிப:৷৷1.41.24৷৷
யஜ்ஞஂ நிவர்தயாமாஸ யதாகல்பஂ யதாவிதி.
யஜ்ஞஂ நிவர்தயாமாஸ யதாகல்பஂ யதாவிதி.
நரிப: king, அஂஷுமத: Anshuman's, கோரஸங்காஷம் aweful, வாக்யம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, யதாகல்பம் in accordance with rules of Kalpa, the vedanga, யதாவிதி in accordance with the scriptures and tradition, யஜ்ஞம் sacrifice ,நிவர்தயாமாஸ performed.
The king heard (was stunned to hear) the awful words of Anshuman, (yet) he
performed the sacrifice in accordance with traditional scriptures and Kalpa, the
Vedanga.
ஸ்வபுரஂ சாகமச்ச்ரீமாநிஷ்டயஜ்ஞோமஹீபதி:৷৷1.41.25৷৷
கங்காயாஷ்சாகமே ராஜா நிஷ்சயஂ நாத்யகச்சத.
கங்காயாஷ்சாகமே ராஜா நிஷ்சயஂ நாத்யகச்சத.
ஷ்ரீமாந் auspicious, மஹீபதி: lord of earth, king Sagara, இஷ்டயஜ்ஞ: had completed the performance of the sacrifice, ஸ்வபுரம் to his own capital, ஆகமத் reached, ராஜா king, கங்காயா: Ganga, ஆகமே in the matter of descent, நிஷ்சயம் decision, நாத்யகச்சத did not arrive (at any).
The great lord of the earth (king Sagara) after performing the sacrifice reached his capital. (But) He could not devise any means to bring Ganga down to the earth.
அகரித்வா நிஷ்சயஂ ராஜா காலேந மஹதா மஹாந் .
த்ரிஂஷத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ராஜ்யஂ கரித்வா திவஂ கத:৷৷1.41.26৷৷
த்ரிஂஷத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ராஜ்யஂ கரித்வா திவஂ கத:৷৷1.41.26৷৷
மஹாந் mighty, ராஜா king, மஹதா காலேந for a long time, நிஷ்சயஂ அகரித்வா without arriving at any decision (in the matter of bringing Ganga down to earth), த்ரிஂஷத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி thirty thousand years, ராஜ்யம் kingdom, கரித்வா having ruled, திவஂ கத: ascended heaven.
The mighty king (Sagara), over a long period of time without being able to devise means (to bring Ganga down to the earth), ruled the kingdom for thirty thousand years and ascended to heaven".
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே ஏகசத்வாரிஂஷஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the fortyfirst sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
