[ Anshuman performs penance to bring Ganga to the earth-- Bhagiratha follows

--receives boon from Brahma--Brahma informs Anshuman that only lord Siva is capable to hold Ganga.]

காலதர்மஂ கதே ராம ஸகரே ப்ரகரிதீஜநா:.

ராஜாநஂ ரோசயாமாஸுரஂஷுமந்தஂ ஸுதார்மிகம்৷৷1.42.1৷৷


ராம O! Rama, ஸகரே when king Sagara, காலதர்மம் duty of nature, death, கதே obtained, ப்ரகரிதீஜநா: ministers and subjects, ஸுதார்மிகம் highly virtuous, அஂஷுமந்தம் Anshuman, ராஜாநம் as king, ரோசயாமாஸு: accepted.

"O Rama! when Sagara died, the subjects installed the highly virtuous Anshuman as king.
ஸ ராஜா ஸுமஹாநாஸீதஂஷுமாந் ரகுநந்தந! .

தஸ்ய புத்ரோ மஹாநாஸீத்திலீப இதி விஷ்ருத:৷৷1.42.2৷৷


ரகுநந்தந O! Descendent of Raghu, Rama, ஸ: அஂஷுமாந் that Anshuman, ஸுமஹாந் very great, ராஜா ஆஸீத் was a monarch, தஸ்ய for him, திலீப இதி by name Dilipa, விஷ்ருத: celebrated, மஹாந் great, புத்ர: ஆஸீத் a son was born.

O descendnt of the Raghus! that Anshuman became a very great monarch. He had a great son, Dilipa who became famous.
தஸ்மிந் ராஜ்யஂ ஸமாவேஷ்ய திலீபே ரகுநந்தந!.

ஹிமவச்சிகரே புண்யே தபஸ்தேபே ஸுதாருணம்৷৷1.42.3৷৷


ரகுநந்தந O! Rama, தஸ்மிந் திலீபே in that Dilipa, ராஜ்யம் kingdom, ஸமாவேஷ்ய vesting, புண்யே pious, ஹிமவச்சிகரே on the peak of Himavat mountain, ஸுதாருணம் rigid, தப: penance, தேபே he performed.

O Delight of the Raghus! having vested the kingdom with Dilipa, Anshuman performed rigid penance on the sacred peak of the Himavat mountain.
த்வாத்ரிஂஷச்ச ஸஹஸ்ராணி வர்ஷாணி ஸுமஹாயஷா:.

தபோவநஂ கதோ ராம ஸ்வர்கஂ லேபே தபோதந:৷৷1.42.4৷৷


ராம O! Rama, ஸுமஹாயஷா: highly renowned Anshuman, த்வாத்ரிஂஷத் ஸஹஸ்ராணி thirty two thousand, வர்ஷாணி years, தபோவநஂ கத: having reached tapovana, தபோதந: one who had asceticism as wealth, ஸ்வர்கம் heaven, லேபே attained.

O Rama! highly renowned Anshuman, having lived for thirtytwo thousand years in the tapovana, turned an ascetic and attained heaven (without accomplishing his objective).
திலீபஸ்து மஹாதேஜாஷ்ஷ்ருத்வா பைதாமஹஂ வதம்.

து:கோபஹதயா புத்த்யா நிஷ்சயஂ நாத்யகச்சத৷৷1.42.5৷৷


மஹாதேஜா: exceedingly lustrous, திலீபஸ்து Dilipa on his part, பைதாமஹம் relating to his grand-fathers, வதம் killing, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, து:கோபஹதயா overtaken by grief, புத்த்யா with his intellect, நிஷ்சயம் conclusion, நாத்யகச்சத did not arrive at.

When exceedingly brilliant Dilipa heard about the death of his grandfathers, he was overtaken by grief but could not arrive at any conclusion with his intellect (regarding means of bringing down the sacred river).
கதஂ கங்காவதரணஂ கதஂ தேஷாஂ ஜலக்ரியா.

தாரயேயஂ கதஂ சைதாநிதி சிந்தாபரோபவத்৷৷1.42.6৷৷


கங்காவதரணம் descent of Ganga, கதம் how to do?, தேஷாம் their, ஜலக்ரியா funeral rites with water, கதம் how to do?, ஏதாந் them, கதம் how to, தாரயேயம் இதி (help them to cross the wordly sea of suffering and reach heaven) liberate, சிந்தாபர: thoughtful, அபூத் became.

How to bring about the descent of Ganga? How to perform funeral rites of the ancestors with Ganga water? How to liberate them Thus Dilipa was constantly engaged in such thoughts.
தஸ்ய சிந்தயதோ நித்யஂ தர்மேண விதிதாத்மந:.

புத்ரோ பகீரதோ நாம ஜஜ்ஞே பரமதார்மிக:৷৷1.42.7৷৷


விதிதாத்மந: well-known for his intelligence, தர்மேண with righteousness, நித்யம் constantly, சிந்தயத: while reflecting, தஸ்ய for him, பகீரதோ நாம named Bhagiratha, பரமதார்மிக: highly virtuous, புத்ர: son, ஜஜ்ஞே was born.

As Dilipa known for his knowledge of the soul constantly reflected righteously on (this matter of Ganga), a highly virtuous son named Bhagiratha was born to him.
திலீபஸ்து மஹாதேஜா யஜ்ஞைர்பஹுபிரிஷ்டவாந்.

த்ரிஂஷத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ராஜா ராஜ்யமகாரயத்৷৷1.42.8৷৷


மஹாதேஜா: most brilliant, திலீபஸ்து Dilipa on his part, பஹுபி: by any, யஜ்ஞை: sacrifices, இஷ்டவாந் performed, ராஜா king, த்ரிஂஷத்வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி thirty thousand years, ராஜ்யம் kingdom, அகாரயத் ruled.

Most brilliant king Dilipa ruled the kingdom for thirty thousand years performing many sacrifices.
அகத்வா நிஷ்சயஂ ராஜா தேஷாமுத்தரணஂ ப்ரதி .

வ்யாதிநா நரஷார்தூல காலதர்மமுபேயிவாந்৷৷1.42.9৷৷


நரஷார்தூல O! Tiger among men, ராஜா king Dilipa, தேஷாம் their, உத்தரணஂ ப்ரதி about salvation, நிஷ்சயம் conclusion, அகத்வா not able to arrive, வ்யாதிநா by suffering illness, காலதர்மம் death, உபேயிவாந் effected.

O Tiger among men! king Dilipa was unable to arrive at a conclusion regarding the
salvation of his ancestors.He was affected by illness and died.
இந்த்ரலோகஂ கதோ ராஜா ஸ்வார்ஜிதேநைவ கர்மணா.

ராஜ்யே பகீரதஂ புத்ரமபிஷிச்ய நரர்ஷப:৷৷1.42.10৷৷


நரர்ஷப: the best among men, ராஜா king Dilipa, புத்ரம் son, பகீரதம் Bhagiratha, ராஜ்யே in the kingdom, அபிஷிச்ய having conducted coronation, ஸ்வார்ஜிதேநைவ with self-earned, கர்மணா ஏவ acts only, இந்த்ரலோகம் towards the region of Indra, கத: had gone.

The king (Dilipa) performed the coronation of his son Bhagiratha and reached the region of Indra as a reward for virtuous acts done by him.
பகீரதஸ்து ராஜர்ஷிர்தார்மிகோ ரகுநந்தந!.

அநபத்யோ மஹாதேஜா: ப்ரஜாகாமஸ்ஸ சாப்ரஜ:৷৷1.42.11৷৷


ரகுநந்தந O! Rama, தார்மிக: righteous one, மஹாதேஜா: highly lustrous, ராஜர்ஷி: royal sage, பகீரதஸ்து Bhagiratha, அநபத்ய: without sons, ஸ: he, ப்ரஜாகாம: desirous of progeny, அப்ரஜா: did not beget children.

O delight of the Raghus! righteous Bhagiratha who was highly lustrous rajarshi was without sons. He was desirous of progeny but did not beget children.
மந்த்ரிஷ்வாதாய தத்ராஜ்யஂ கங்காவதரணே ரத:.

ஸ தபோ தீர்கமாதிஷ்டத்கோகர்ணே ரகுநந்தந৷৷1.42.12৷৷

ஊர்த்வபாஹு: பஞ்சதபா மாஸாஹாரோ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய:.


ரகுநந்தந O! Rama, ஸ: he, கங்காவதரணே for the descent of Ganga, ரத: keenly desiring, தத்ராஜ்யம் that kingdom, மந்த்ரிஷு in his ministers, ஆதாய after entrusting, ஊர்த்வபாஹு: with arms held upwards, பஞ்சதபா: surrounded by four fires in the hot season and standing under the sun, the fifth fire, மாஸாஹார: partaking food once a month, ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: with his senses controlled, கோகர்ணே at the sacred spot, Gokarna, தீர்கம் for long years, தப: yogic penance, ஆதிஷ்டத் practised.

O son of the Raghus (Rama), Bhagiratha, with a determination to bring down Ganga
entrusted the kingdom to his ministers and went to a sacred place known as Gokarna. There with arms uplifted surrounded by four fires, partaking food once a month, with his senses controlled, carried out panchatapa for a number of years.
தஸ்ய வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி கோரே தபஸி திஷ்டத:৷৷1.42.13৷৷

அதீதாநி மஹாபாஹோ தஸ்ய ராஜ்ஞோ மஹாத்மந:.

ஸுப்ரீதோ பகவாந் ப்ரஹ்மா ப்ரஜாநாஂ பதிரீஷ்வர:৷৷1.42.14৷৷


மஹாபாஹோ O! Mighty armed Rama, தஸ்ய while he was, கோரே தபஸி amidst rigid austerities, திஷ்டத: while he was determined to carry on, வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி thousands of years, அதீதாநி passed away, ப்ரஜாநாம் for all men, பதி: lord, ஈஷ்வர: lord, பகவாந் ப்ரஹ்மா god Brahma, தஸ்ய his, மஹாத்மந: illustrious, ராஜ்ஞ: for king, ஸுப்ரீத: was highly pleased.

O mighty-armed, (Rama)! Bhagiratha continued in that state for a thousand years amidst rigid austerities. Lord of all creatures, Brahma was highly pleased with that illustrious king.
ததஸ்ஸுரகணைஸ்ஸார்தமுபாகம்ய பிதாமஹ:.

பகீரதஂ மஹாத்மாநஂ தப்யமாநமதாப்ரவீத்৷৷1.42.15৷৷


தத: thereafter, பிதாமஹ: grand-sire, ஸுரகணை: with groups of devatas, உபாகம்ய having arrived, அத thereafter, தப்யமாநம் engaged in austerities, மஹாத்மாநம் illustrious, பகீரதம் Bhagiratha, அப்ரவீத் said.

Thereafter, the Grandsire arrived with the gods and spoke to the noble Bhagiratha engaged in austerities.
பகீரத மஹாபாக! ப்ரீதஸ்தேஹஂ ஜநேஷ்வர!.

தபஸா ச ஸுதப்தேந வரஂ வரய ஸுவ்ரத!৷৷1.42.16৷৷


மஹாபாக O! Highly distinguished one, ஜநேஷ்வர O! Mighty monarch, பகீரத O! Bhagiratha, தே by you, ஸுதப்தேந by properly disciplined, தபஸா austerities, அஹம் I, ப்ரீத: pleased, ஸுவ்ரத O! You of excellent vows, வரம் boon, வரய ask for.

'O distinguished one! O mighty monarch! O Bhagiratha of excellent vows! I am pleased with your well-disciplined austerities. Ask for a boon'.
தமுவாச மஹாதேஜா: ஸர்வலோகபிதாமஹம்.

பகீரதோ மஹாபாக: கரிதாஞ்ஜலிருபஸ்தித:৷৷1.42.17৷৷


மஹாதேஜா: most brilliant one, மஹாபாக: highly glorious, பகீரதஃ Bhagiratha, கரிதாஞ்ஜலி: with folded palms, உபஸ்தித: having approached, தஂ ஸர்வலோகபிதாமஹம் grand-sire for all the worlds, உவாச spoke.

Brilliant, glorious Bhagiratha, stood before the Grandsire of all the worlds with folded palms and spoke":
யதி மே பகவந் ப்ரீதோ யத்யஸ்தி தபஸ: பலம்.

ஸகரஸ்யாத்மஜாஸ்ஸர்வே மத்தஸ்ஸலிலமாப்நுயு:৷৷1.42.18৷৷


பகவந் O! Adorable one, மே with me, ப்ரீத: யதி if you are pleased, தபஸ: of austerities, பலம் அஸ்தி யதி if worthy reward is possible, ஸகரஸ்ய king Sagara's, ஆத்மஜா: sons, ஸர்வே all, மத்த: from me, ஸலிலம் funeral rites with water, ஆப்நுயு: may receive.

'O Lord! if you are pleased with my austerities and if they are worthy of a reward, grant me the boon whereby all the sons of Sagara will receive from me funeral rites with the waters (of Ganga)'.
கங்காயாஸ்ஸலிலக்லிந்நே பஸ்மந்யேஷாஂ மஹாத்மநாம்.

ஸ்வர்கஂ கச்சேயுரத்யந்தஂ ஸர்வே மே ப்ரபிதாமஹா:৷৷1.42.19৷৷


ஏஷாம் these, மஹாத்மநாம் eminent ones, பஸ்மநி in ashes, கங்காயா: Ganga's, ஸலிலக்லிந்நே immersed by the waters, மே my, ஸர்வே all, ப்ரபிதாமஹா: uncles of my grand father, அத்யந்தம் ultimately, ஸ்வர்கம் towards heaven, கச்சேயு: may go.

'The ashes of these eminent uncles of my grandfather, immersed by the waters of Ganga may ultimately go to heaven'.
தேயா ச ஸந்ததிர்தேவ! நாவஸீதேத்குலஂ ச ந:.

இக்ஷ்வாகூணாஂ குலே தேவ! ஏஷ மேஸ்து வர:பர:৷৷1.42.20৷৷


தேவ O! Divine lord, இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் for Ikshvakus, குலே in the dynasty, ஸந்ததி: progeny, தேயா should be bestowed, ந: our, குலம் race, நாவஸீதேத் let it not be terminated, ஏஷ: this, மே my, பர: another, வர: அஸ்து let it be a boon.

'O Lord! let the progeny be perpuated in our race of the Ikshvakus. Let not that dynasty be terminated with me. This is another boon I seek'.
உக்தவாக்யஂ து ராஜாநஂ ஸர்வலோகபிதாமஹ:.

ப்ரத்யுவாச ஷுபாஂ வாணீஂ மதுராஂ மதுராக்ஷராம்৷৷1.42.21৷৷


ஸர்வலோகபிதாமஹ: grand-sire for all the worlds, உக்தவாக்யம் him who has spoken these words, ராஜாநம் addressing the king, ஷுபாம் auspicious, மதுராம் sweet, மதுராக்ஷராம் with agreeable letters, வாணீம் words, ப்ரத்யுவாச replied.

To this the Grandsire of all the worlds replied with a sweet voice full of good wishes and sweet words.
மநோரதோ மஹாநேஷ பகீரத மஹாரத!.

ஏவஂ பவது பத்ரஂ தே இக்ஷ்வாகுகுலவர்தந!৷৷1.42.22৷৷


மஹாரத O! Great charioteer, பகீரத Bhagiratha, ஏஷ: this, மநோரத desire, மஹாந் great, இக்ஷ்வாகு குலவர்தந perpetuator of dynasty of Ikshvaku, ஏவம் in this way, பவது may happen, தே பத்ரம் prosperity to you.

'O Great charioteer! Bhagiratha, your desire is great. O Perpetuator of dynasty of the
Ikshvakus, let your wish be fulfilled. Prosperity to you'.
இயஂ ஹைமவதீ கங்கா ஜ்யேஷ்டா ஹிமவதஸ்ஸுதா.

தாஂ வை தாரயிதுஂ ஷக்தோ ஹரஸ்தத்ர நியுஜ்யதாம்৷৷1.42.23৷৷


ஹைமவதீ Haimavati, the daughter of Himavat, இயம் this, கங்கா Ganga, ஹிமவத: Himavat's, ஜ்யேஷ்டா ஸுதா eldest daughter, தாம் her, தாரயிதும் to hold, ஷக்த: capable, ஹர: lord Shiva, தத்ர there, நியுஜ்யதாம் may be entreated.

'This Hymavati (Ganga) is Himavat's eldest daughter and only lord Siva is capable to hold (the force of her descent to earth). Therefore let Siva be entreated'.
கங்காயா: பதநஂ ராஜந்! பரிதிவீ ந ஸஹிஷ்யதி.

தாஂ வை தாரயிதுஂ வீர! நாந்யஂ பஷ்யாமி ஷூலிந:৷৷1.42.24৷৷


ராஜந் O! King, கங்காயா: Ganga's, பதநம் descent, பரிதிவீ earth, ந ஸஹிஷ்யதி cannot sustain, வீர O! Hero, தாம் her, தாரயிதும் to hold, ஷூலிந: other than Siva, the wielder of trident, அந்யம் any other person, ந பஷ்யாமி I do not see.

'O King! Ganga's descent cannot be sustained by earth. O Hero! I do not see any other person to hold her than the wielder of the trident (Siva)'.
தமேவமுக்த்வா ராஜாநஂ கங்காஂ சாபாஷ்ய லோககரித்.

ஜகாம த்ரிதிவஂ தேவஸ்ஸஹதேவைர்மருத்கணை:৷৷1.42.25৷৷


லோககரித் (தேவஃ) the creator of the worlds, தஂ ராஜாநம் addressing that king, ஏவம் in this way, உக்த்வா having spoken, கங்காஂ ச Ganga also, ஆபாஷ்ய after conversing, ஸஹ தேவை: along with devatas, மருத்கணை: with groups of maruts, த்ரிதிவம் towards heaven, ஜகாம had gone.

The Creator of the worlds having thus addressed the king and conversing with Ganga went towards heaven along with devatas and maruts".
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே த்விசத்வாரிஂஷஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the fortysecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
