[King Bhagiratha performs funeral rites of his ancestors.]
ஸ கத்வா ஸாகரஂ ராஜா கங்கயாநுகதஸ்ததா .
ப்ரவிவேஷ தலஂ பூமேர்யத்ர தே பஸ்மஸாத்கரிதா:৷৷1.44.1৷৷

Sloka & Translation
ஸ: ராஜா that king, ததா then, கங்கயா by Ganga, அநுகத: followed by, ஸாகரம் ocean, கத்வா having gone, யத்ர where, தே they (sons of Sagara), பஸ்மஸாத் into ashes, கரிதா: had been made, பூமே: earth's, தலம் lower regions, ப்ரவிவேஷ entered.
Thereupon that king followed by Ganga reached the ocean and entered the lower regions of the earth where the sons of Sagara were found reduced to ashes.
பஸ்மந்யதாப்லுதே ராம கங்காயாஸ்ஸலிலேந வை.
ஸர்வலோகப்ரபுர்ப்ரஹ்மா ராஜாநமிதமப்ரவீத்৷৷1.44.2৷৷

அத then, பஸ்மநி when the ashes, கங்காயா: Ganga's, ஸலிலேந with waters, ஆப்லுதே were inundated, ஸர்வலோகப்ரபு: lord of the world, ப்ரஹ்மா Brahma, ராஜாநம் addressing the king, இதம் அப்ரவீத் spoke these words.
After the ashes were inundated by the waters of Ganga, Brahma, lord of the world, appeared before king Bhagiratha and said:
தாரிதா நரஷார்தூல திவஂ யாதாஷ்ச தேவவத்.
ஷஷ்டி: புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி ஸகரஸ்ய மஹாத்மந:৷৷1.44.3৷৷
ஷஷ்டி: புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி ஸகரஸ்ய மஹாத்மந:৷৷1.44.3৷৷
நரஷார்தூல O! Best among men, மஹாத்மந: of the illustrious, ஸகரஸ்ய Sagara's, ஷஷ்டி: sixty புத்ரஸஹஸ்ராணி thousand sons, தாரிதா: were liberated, தேவவத் like devatas, திவம் towards heaven, யாதா: had gone.
"O Tiger among men! sixty thousand sons of illustrious Sagara having been liberated, had gone towards heaven like devatas.
ஸாகரஸ்ய ஜலஂ லோகே யாவத்ஸ்தாஸ்யதி பார்திவ!.
ஸகரஸ்யாத்மஜாஸ்தாவத்ஸ்வர்கே ஸ்தாஸ்யந்தி தேவவத்৷৷1.44.4৷৷

பார்திவ O! King, ஸாகரஸ்ய ocean's, ஜலம் waters, லோகே in this world, யாவத் as long as, ஸ்தாஸ்யதி remain, தாவத் till such time, ஸகரஸ்ய ஆத்மஜா: sons of Sagara, தேவவத் like devatas, ஸ்வர்கே in heavens, ஸ்தாஸ்யந்தி will stay.
O King! as long as the waters in the ocean exist in this world, shall the sons of Sagara, live in heavens like gods.
இயஂ ச துஹிதா ஜ்யேஷ்டா தவ கங்கா பவிஷ்யதி .
த்வத்கரிதேந ச நாம்நாத லோகே ஸ்தாஸ்யதி விஷ்ருதா৷৷1.44.5৷৷
த்வத்கரிதேந ச நாம்நாத லோகே ஸ்தாஸ்யதி விஷ்ருதா৷৷1.44.5৷৷
இயம் this, கங்கா Ganga, தவ your, ஜ்யேஷ்டா eldest, துஹிதா daughter, பவிஷ்யதி will become, அத from now onwards, த்வத்கரிதேந formed out of your, நாம்நா name, லோகே in this world, விஷ்ருதா well-known, ஸ்தாஸ்யதி will stay on.
This Ganga will become your eldest daughter and from now on she will be well-known in this world (as Bhagirathi) after your name.
கங்கா த்ரிபதகா ராஜந் திவ்யா பாகீரதீதி ச.
த்ரீந் பதோ பாவயந்தீதி ததஸ்த்ரிபதகா ஸ்மரிதா৷৷1.44.6৷৷
த்ரீந் பதோ பாவயந்தீதி ததஸ்த்ரிபதகா ஸ்மரிதா৷৷1.44.6৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, திவ்யா divine, கங்கா Ganga, த்ரிபதகா known as Tripathaga, பாகீரதீதி ச also as Bhagirathi, த்ரீந் in three, பத: paths, பாவயந்தீ இதி since she covers by flowing and purifying, தத: therefore, த்ரிபதகா Tripathaga, ஸ்மரிதா has been known as.
O King! divine Ganga will be called Tripathaga as well as Bhagirathi. Since she flows in the three worlds (heaven, earth and the lower world: Patala), she will be known as
Tripathaga.
பிதாமஹாநாஂ ஸர்வேஷாஂ த்வமத்ர மநுஜாதிப! .
குருஷ்வ ஸலிலஂ ராஜந்! ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாமபவர்ஜய৷৷1.44.7৷৷
குருஷ்வ ஸலிலஂ ராஜந்! ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாமபவர்ஜய৷৷1.44.7৷৷
மநுஜாதிப! O! Lord of men, ராஜந் O! King, த்வம் you, அத்ர here, ஸர்வேஷாம் for all, பிதாமஹாநாம் ancestors, ஸலிலஂ offerings with waters, குருஷ்வ perform, ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாம் your vow, அபவர்ஜய fulfil.
O Lord of men! O King! you may offer the waters of Ganga here to all your ancestors and thereby fulfil your vow.
பூர்வகேண ஹி தே ராஜஂஸ்தேநாதியஷஸா ததா.
தர்மிணாஂ ப்ரவரேணாபி நைஷ ப்ராப்தோ மநோரத:৷৷1.44.8৷৷
தர்மிணாஂ ப்ரவரேணாபி நைஷ ப்ராப்தோ மநோரத:৷৷1.44.8৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, தே your, பூர்வகேண ancestor, அதியஷஸா by the highly renowned, தர்மிணாம் among righteous ones, ப்ரவரேணா foremost, தேநாபி even by him, ததா then, ஏஷ: this, மநோரத: desire, ந ப்ராப்த: was not obtained.
O King! by the highly renowned ancestors of yours, the foremost among righteous ones (even Sagara) this desire has not been fulfilled.
ததைவாஂஷுமதா தாத! லோகேப்ரதிமதேஜஸா.
கங்காஂ ப்ரார்தயதாநேதுஂ ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா நாபவர்ஜிதா৷৷1.44.9৷৷
கங்காஂ ப்ரார்தயதாநேதுஂ ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா நாபவர்ஜிதா৷৷1.44.9৷৷
தாத O! Child, ததைவ similarly, லோகே in this world, அப்ரதிமதேஜஸா by the one possessing unparalleled prowess, கங்காம் Ganga, ஆநேதும் for bringing, ப்ரார்தயதா cherished, அஂஷுமதா by Anshuman's, ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா vow, நாபவர்ஜிதா could not be completed.
O Child! similarly though Anshuman possessed unparalleled prowess in this world his prayer to Ganga, his vow could not be fulfilled.
ராஜர்ஷிணா குணவதா மஹர்ஷிஸமதேஜஸா.
மத்துல்யதபஸா சைவ க்ஷத்ரதர்மஸ்திதேந ச৷৷1.44.10৷৷
திலீபேந மஹாபாக! தவ பித்ராதி தேஜஸா.
புநர்ந ஷங்கிதாநேதுஂ கங்காஂ ப்ரார்தயதாநக!৷৷1.44.11৷৷
மத்துல்யதபஸா சைவ க்ஷத்ரதர்மஸ்திதேந ச৷৷1.44.10৷৷
திலீபேந மஹாபாக! தவ பித்ராதி தேஜஸா.
புநர்ந ஷங்கிதாநேதுஂ கங்காஂ ப்ரார்தயதாநக!৷৷1.44.11৷৷
அநக O! Sinless one, மஹாபாக O! Blessed one, ராஜார்ஷிணா by the royal saint, குணவதா virtuous, மஹர்ஷிஸமதேஜஸா possessing the splendour of a maharshi, மத்துல்யதபஸா equal to me in austerities, க்ஷத்ரதர்மஸ்திதேந abiding in the duties of a Kshatriya, அதிதேஜஸா by the highly lustrous, கங்காம் Ganga, ப்ரார்தயதா beseeching, தவ your, பித்ரா by father, திலீபேந by Dilipa, மஹாபாக O! Distinguished one, ஆநேதுஂ புந: for bringing, ந ஷங்கிதா it was not made possible.
O Sinless one (Bhagiratha)! O Distinguished one! on the part of Dilipa brilliant your father who had the virtuous of a rajarshi, who was equal to a maharshi in splendour, and to me in austerities and abiding to the duties of a kshatriya it was even not possible to bring Ganga through prayer.
ஸா த்வயா ஸமநுக்ராந்தா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா புருஷர்ஷப!.
ப்ராப்தோஸி பரமஂ லோகே யஷ: பரமஸம்மதம்৷৷1.44.12৷৷
ப்ராப்தோஸி பரமஂ லோகே யஷ: பரமஸம்மதம்৷৷1.44.12৷৷
புருஷர்ஷப O! Best among men, ஸா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா that vow, த்வயா by you, ஸமநுக்ராந்தா has been kept up, லோகே in this world, பரமஸம்மதம் highly acceptable, பரமம் supreme, யஷ: fame, ப்ராப்த: அஸி you have obtained.
O Best among men! you have fulfilled that vow. You have achieved supreme renown
and reverence in this world.
யச்ச கங்காவதரணஂ த்வயா கரிதமரிந்தம.
அநேந ச பவாந் ப்ராப்தோ தர்மஸ்யாயதநஂ மஹத்৷৷1.44.13৷৷
அநேந ச பவாந் ப்ராப்தோ தர்மஸ்யாயதநஂ மஹத்৷৷1.44.13৷৷
அரிந்தம O! Destroyer of enemies, த்வயா by you, யத் since, கங்காவதரணம் descent of Ganga, கரிதம் has been materialised, அநேந by this, பவாந் you, தர்மஸ்ய of dharma, மஹத் great, ஆயதநம் sacred place, ப்ராப்த: have obtained.
O Destroyer of enemies! by bringing about the descent of Ganga, you have secured a great abode in dharma.
ப்லாவயஸ்வ த்வமாத்மாநஂ நரோத்தம! ஸதோசிதே.
ஸலிலே புருஷவ்யாக்ர! ஷுசி: புண்யபலோ பவ৷৷1.44.14৷৷
ஸலிலே புருஷவ்யாக்ர! ஷுசி: புண்யபலோ பவ৷৷1.44.14৷৷
நரோத்தம O! Best among men, புருஷவ்யாக்ர O! Tiger among men, உசிதே in a befitting, ஸலிலே waters, ஸதா always, த்வம் you, ஆத்மாநம் yourself, ப்லாவயஸ்வ take bath by dipping and floating later, ஷுசி: purifying yourself, புண்யபல: பவ acquire holiness.
O Best among men! O Tiger among men! take a dip in the eternally sacred waters, purify yourself and acquire holiness.
பிதாமஹாநாஂ ஸர்வேஷாஂ குருஷ்வ ஸலிலக்ரியாம்.
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேஸ்து கமிஷ்யாமி ஸ்வஂ லோகஂ கம்யதாஂ நரிப!৷৷1.44.15৷৷
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேஸ்து கமிஷ்யாமி ஸ்வஂ லோகஂ கம்யதாஂ நரிப!৷৷1.44.15৷৷
ஸர்வேஷாஂ for all, பிதாமஹாநாம் forefathers, ஸலிலக்ரியாம் rites with waters, குருஷ்வ perform, தே to you, ஸ்வஸ்தி safety, கமிஷ்யாமி I shall go, நரிப O! King, ஸ்வஂ லோகம் towards your region, கம்யதாம் you shall go.
O King! perform the rites of all your forefathers with the waters (of Ganga), farewell. I shall return to my world (now). Go back, O King" (said Grandsire)!
பகீரதோபி ராஜர்ஷி: கரித்வா ஸலிலமுத்தமம்.

யதாக்ரமஂ யதாந்யாயஂ ஸாகராணாஂ மஹாயஷா:৷৷1.44.17৷৷
கரிதோதகஷ்ஷுசீ ராஜா ஸ்வபுரஂ ப்ரவிவேஷ ஹ.
ஸமரித்தார்தோ ரகுஷ்ரேஷ்ட ஸ்வராஜ்யஂ ப்ரஷஷாஸ ஹ৷৷1.44.18৷৷
ராஜர்ஷி: royal saint, மஹாயஷா: highly famous, ராஜா king, பகீரதோபி Bhagiratha also, யதாக்ரமம் following proper order, யதாந்யாயம் following the tradition, ஸாகராணாம் for the sons of Sagara, உத்தமம் highest, ஸலிலம் rites with sacred water, கரித்வா having performed, கரிதோதக: having performed ablutions, ஷுசி: a purified man, ஸ்வபுரம் his own city, ப்ரவிவேஷ ஹ entered, ரகுஷ்ரேஷ்ட O! Rama, ஸமரித்தார்த: having fulfilled his desire, ஸ்வராஜ்யம் his kingdom, ப்ரஷஷாஸ ஹ ruled.
The illustrious rajarshi Bhagiratha, performed the rites of offering the sacred water of Ganga, in accordance with proper order and tradition for the sons of Sagara. Purified with the ablutions entered his own city." O Best of the Raghus! his desire thus fulfilled he continued to rule the kingdom thereafter".
ப்ரமுமோத ஹ லோகஸ்தஂ நரிபமாஸாத்ய ராகவ!.
நஷ்டஷோகஸ்ஸமரித்தார்தோ பபூவ விகதஜ்வர:৷৷1.44.19৷৷

ராகவ O! Rama, தம் him, நரிபம் as king, ஆஸாத்ய having obtained, லோக: the world, ப்ரமுமோத rejoiced, ஸமரித்தார்த: having achieved his desire, விகதஜ்வர: freed from mental afflictions, நஷ்டஷோக: with his sorrows mitigated, பபூவ became.
"O Best of the Raghus! the world rejoiced having Bhagiratha as king. With his purpose achieved, he was freed from all mental afflictions and sorrows and thereafter lived happily.
ஏஷ தே ராம கங்காயா விஸ்தரோபிஹிதோ மயா.
ஸ்வஸ்தி ப்ராப்நுஹி பத்ரஂ தே ஸஂத்யாகாலோதிவர்ததே৷৷1.44.20৷৷

ராம O! Rama, கங்காயா: Ganga's, ஏஷ: this, விஸ்தர: detailed story, மயா by me, தே to you, அபிஹித: has been mentioned, ஸ்வஸ்தி well-being to you, ப்ராப்நுஹி you may receive, தே to you, பத்ரம் prosperity, ஸஂத்யாகால: evening time (proper for doing ablutions ), அதிவர்ததே is passing by.
O Rama! I have related you the story of Ganga in detail. Evening time is passing by (and we shall perform the ablutions) farewell.
தந்யஂ யஷஸ்யமாயுஷ்யஂ புத்ர்யஂ ஸ்வர்க்யமதீவ ச.
யஷ்ஷ்ராவயதி விப்ரேஷு க்ஷத்ரியேஷ்விதரேஷு ச৷৷1.44.21৷৷
ப்ரீயந்தே பிதரஸ்தஸ்ய ப்ரீயந்தே தைவதாநி ச.
யஷ்ஷ்ராவயதி விப்ரேஷு க்ஷத்ரியேஷ்விதரேஷு ச৷৷1.44.21৷৷
ப்ரீயந்தே பிதரஸ்தஸ்ய ப்ரீயந்தே தைவதாநி ச.
தந்யம் conferring prosperity, யஷஸ்யம் brings fame, ஆயுஷ்யம் confers longevity, புத்ர்யம் is capable of leading to progeny, அதீவ very much, ஸ்வர்க்யம் leading to heaven, ய: this story, விப்ரேஷு for brahmins, க்ஷத்ரியேஷு Kshatriyas, இதரேஷு ச others also, ஷ்ராவயதி relates, தஸ்ய his, பிதர: forefathers, ப்ரீயந்தே would be pleased, தைவதாநி ச devatas also, ப்ரீயந்தே will be pleased.
He will be blessed with fame, longevity, progeny and (after death) heaven brahmins One who recites this story of Ganga to the kshatriyas and others, the gods and his forefathers would be pleased with him.
இதமாக்யாநமவ்யக்ரோ கங்காவதரணஂ ஷுபம்৷৷1.44.22৷৷
யஷ்ஷரிணோதி ச காகுத்ஸ்த ஸர்வாந் காமாநவாப்நுயாத்.
ஸர்வே பாபா: ப்ரணஷ்யந்தி ஆயு: கீர்திஷ்ச வர்ததே৷৷1.44.23৷৷
யஷ்ஷரிணோதி ச காகுத்ஸ்த ஸர்வாந் காமாநவாப்நுயாத்.
ஸர்வே பாபா: ப்ரணஷ்யந்தி ஆயு: கீர்திஷ்ச வர்ததே৷৷1.44.23৷৷
காகுத்ஸ்த O! Rama, இதம் this, ஷுபம் sacred, கங்காவதரணம் relating to the descent of Ganga, ஆக்யாநம் story, ய: who, அவ்யக்ர: with concentration of mind, ஷரிணோதி listens, ஸர்வாந் all, காமாந் desires, அவாப்நுயாத் he may obtain, ஸர்வே all, பாபா: sins, ப்ரணஷ்யந்தி are destroyed, ஆயு: longevity, கீர்திஷ்ச fame also, வர்ததே will increase.
O Son of the Kakusthas! whosoever listens to this auspicious story relating to the descent of Ganga with concentration, all his desires will be achieved, his sins will be destroyed and his longevity and fame will increase".
