[Diti undergoes mortifications for the birth of a son with the consent of Kasyapa-- Indra serves her on an occasion when she was impure- enters her womb and severes the embryo into seven parts.]

হতেষু তেষু পুত্রেষু দিতি: পরমদু:খিতা৷

মারীচং কাশ্যপং রাম ভর্তারমিদমব্রবীত্৷৷1.46.1৷৷


রাম O! Rama, তেষু পুত্রেষু when those sons, হতেষু were killed, দিতি: Diti, পরমদু:খিতা afflicted with great grief, ভর্তারম্ husband, মারীচম্ Maricha, কাশ্যপম্ Kasyapas's son, ইদম্ অব্রবীত্ spoke these words.

"O Rama! Diti was afflicted with great grief when her sons were killed. She addressed her husband Kasyapa, son of Maricha", saying:
হতপুত্রাস্মি ভগবংস্তব পুত্রৈর্মহাবলৈ:৷

শক্রহন্তারমিচ্ছামি পুত্রং দীর্ঘতপোর্জিতম্৷৷1.46.2৷৷


ভগবন্ O! Adorable one, মহাবলৈ: by the highly powerful, পুত্রৈ: by your sons, devatas, হতপুত্রা অস্মি my sons have been killed, শক্রহন্তারম্ capable of slaying Indra, দীর্ঘতপোর্জিতম্ acquire through long austerities, পুত্রম্ mighty son, ইচ্ছামি I desire.

"O adorable one, your highly powerful sons, (devatas) have killed mine through extensive austerities. I am desirous of obtaining a (mighty) son capable of killing Indra.
সাহং তপশ্চরিষ্যামি গর্ভং মে দাতুমর্হসি৷

ঈশ্বরং শক্রহন্তারং ত্বমনুজ্ঞাতুমর্হসি৷৷1.46.3৷৷


সা অহম্ I, তপ: austerities, চরিষ্যামি I shall practise, ত্বম্ you, ঈশ্বরম্ a supreme ruler of the world, শুক্রহংতারম্ capable of slaying Indra, গর্ভম্ embryo (son), মে to me, দাতুম্ to give, অর্হসি behoves of you, অনুজ্ঞাতুম্ to give consent, অর্হসি behoves.

I shall practise austerities. You ought to grant me a son who would be the supreme ruler of the world and capable of killing Indra. You can say yes (if you will)".
তস্যাস্তদ্বচনং শ্রুত্বা মারীচ: কাশ্যপস্তদা৷

প্রত্যুবাচ মহাতেজা দিতিং পরমদু:খিতাম্৷৷1.46.4৷৷


তদা then, মারীচ: Maricha's son, মহাতেজা: exceedingly lustrous, কাশ্যপ: Kashyapa, তস্যা: her, তত্ বচনম্ those words, শ্রুত্বা having heard, পরমদুখি:তাম্ deeply grieved, দিতিম্ addressing Diti, প্রত্যুবাচ replied.

Then, Maricha's son, exceedingly bright Kasyapa on hearing the words of Diti who was deeply grieved replied:
এবং ভবতু, ভদ্রং তে শুচির্ভব তপোধনে!৷

জনযিষ্যসি পুত্রং ত্বং শক্রহন্তারমাহবে৷৷1.46.5৷৷


তপোধনে O! One having austerities as wealth, এবং ভবতু 'Be it so', তে ভদ্রম্ prosperity to you, শুচি: ভব become pure, ত্বম্ you, আহবে in the battle, শক্রহন্তারম্ slayer of Indra, পুত্রম্ son, জনযিষ্যসি will give birth.

"O one vested with the wealth of austerities! be it so. Prosperity to you! Remain chaste, you will deliver a son who will kill Indra in the battle.
পূর্ণে বর্ষসহস্রে তু শুচির্যদি ভবিষ্যসি৷

পুত্রং ত্রৈলোক্যভর্তারং মত্তস্ত্বং জনযিষ্যসি৷৷1.46.6৷৷


ত্বম্ you, শুচি: ভবিষ্যসি যদি if you remain pure and clean, বর্ষসহস্রে thousand years, পূর্ণে after completion, মত্ত: through me, ত্রৈলোক্যভর্তারম্ lord of three worlds, পুত্রম্ son, জনযিষ্যসি will give birth.

"If you remain pure and clean, on completion of a thousand years you will give birth to a son through me who will be the lord of the three worlds".
এবমুক্ত্বা মহাতেজা: পাণিনা স মমার্জ তাম্৷

সমালভ্য ততস্স্বস্তীত্যুক্ত্বা স তপসে যযৌ৷৷1.46.7৷৷


মহাতেজা: highly energetic, স: Kasyapa, এবম্ in this way, উক্ত্বা having spoken, তাম্ her, পাণিনা with his palm, মমার্জ touched her body gently stroking, সমালভ্য having touched her, তত: then, স্বস্তি ইতি "May good be with thee", উক্ত্বা having spoken, স: Kashyapa, তপসে to perform austerities, যযৌ had gone.

Highly brilliant Kasyapa, having thus spoken, touched her gently with his palm, stroked her body and said, "May good betide thee". Having said this, Kasyapa went away to perform austerities.
গতে তস্মিন্নরশ্শ্রেষ্ঠ দিতি: পরমহর্ষিতা৷

কুশপ্লবনমাসাদ্য তপস্তেপে সুদারুণম্৷৷1.46.8৷৷


নরশ্শ্রেষ্ঠ O! Foremost of men, তস্মিন্ when that Kasyapa, গতে (সতি) had gone, দিতি: Diti, পরমহর্ষিতা was exceedingly delighted, কুশপ্লবনম্ sacred spot named Kushaplavana, আসাদ্য having reached, সুদারুণম্ intense, তপ: mortifications, তেপে practised.

"O foremost among men! after Kasyapa had left, Diti exceedingly delighted (at the prospect of having sons) reached Kushaplavana, and practised intense mortifications.
তপস্তস্যাং হি কুর্বন্ত্যাং পরিচর্যাং চকার হ৷

সহস্রাক্ষো নরশ্শ্রেষ্ঠ পরযা গুণসম্পদা৷৷1.46.9৷৷


নরশ্শ্রেষ্ঠ O! Foremost of men, Rama, তস্যাম্ when she, তপ: austerities, কুর্বন্ত্যাম্ while doing, সহস্রাক্ষ: thousand-eyed Indra, পরযা with great, গুণসম্পদা treasure of virtues, পরিচর্যাম্ service, চকার had made.

O foremost of men great treasure of virtues! while she was practising austerities, the thousand-eyed Indra began to serve her.

ন্যবেদযত্সহস্রাক্ষো যচ্চান্যদপি কাঙ্ক্ষিতম্৷৷1.46.10৷৷


সহস্রাক্ষ: Devendra, অগ্নিম্ fire, কুশান্ Kusha grass, কাষ্ঠম্ sticks for burning, অপ: water, ফলম্ fruits, তথৈব চ and, মূলম্ roots, কাঙ্ক্ষিতম্ desired, অন্যত্ all other things, যচ্চ whichever, ন্যবেদযত্ provided her.

The thousand-eyed Indra served her by providing fire, Kusha grass, sticks for burning,
water, fruits, roots and all other things desired by her.
গাত্রসংবহনশ্চৈব শ্রমাপনযনৈস্তথা৷

শক্রস্সর্বেষু কালেষু দিতিং পরিচচার হ ৷৷1.46.11৷৷


শক্র: Devendra, গাত্রসংবহনৈ: চ এব stroking her limbs gently to regain their suppleness, তথা and, শ্রমাপনযনৈ: alleviating her fatigue, সর্বেষু কালেষু at all times, দিতিম্ Diti, পরিচচার হ attended on her.

Indra attended on Diti, stroking her limbs gently from time to time to help her regain their suppleness and alleviate her fatigue.
অথ বর্ষসহস্রে তু দশোনে রঘুনন্দন !৷

দিতি: পরমসম্প্রীতা সহস্রাক্ষমথাব্রবীত্৷৷1.46.12৷৷


রঘুনন্দন O! Joy of Raghus, Rama, অথ thereafter, বর্ষসহস্রে when thousand years, দশোনে short of ten, দিতি: Diti, পরমসম্প্রীতা highly pleased, সহস্রাক্ষম্ addressing Indra, অব্রবীত্ spoke.

O son of the Raghus! ten years before completion of a thousand years. Diti, highly pleased with the services rendered by Indra, addressed him", saying:
যাচিতেন সুরশ্রেষ্ঠ তব পিত্রা মহাত্মনা৷

বরো বর্ষসহস্রান্তে দত্তো মম সুতং প্রতি৷৷1.46.13৷৷


সুরশ্রেষ্ঠ O! Excellent among devatas, Indra, যাচিতেন having been sought, মহাত্মনা by the illustrious, তব your, পিত্রা father, বর্ষসহস্রান্তে after completion of thousand years, সুতং প্রতি about a son, মম to me, বর: boon, দত্ত: granted.

"O best of the gods! your illustrious father granted me a boon for a son I sought on completion of a thousand years (of penance).
তপশ্চরন্ত্যা বর্ষাণি দশ বীর্যবতাং বর!৷

অবশিষ্টানি ভদ্রং তে ভ্রাতরং দ্রক্ষ্যসে তত:৷৷1.46.14৷৷


বীর্যবতাম্ among those having prowess, বর excellent, তপ: austerities, চরন্ত্যা: performing, দশ ten, বর্ষাণি years, অবশিষ্টানি remaining, তত: afterwards, ভ্রাতরম্ brother, দ্রক্ষ্যসে you will see, তে ভদ্রম্ may prosperity to you.

O the best of the brave! ten years is yet to go (for completion of austerities). You will have a brother. May you prosper!
তমহং ত্বত্কৃতে পুত্র সমাধাস্যে জযোত্সুকম্৷

ত্রৈলোক্যবিজযং পুত্র সহ ভোক্ষ্যসি বিজ্বর:৷৷1.46.15৷৷


পুত্র O! Son, তম্ him, ত্বত্কৃতে for you, জযোত্সুকম্ having fortitude for victory, (অহং) সমাধাস্যে I shall unite him, পুত্র O! Son, বিজ্বর: relieved of grief, ত্রৈলোক্যবিজযম্ victory over three worlds, সহ ভোক্ষ্যসি you will enjoy together with him.

O Child! I'll create in him eagerness victory. Together with him you will gain victory over the three worlds. Relieved of sorrows, enjoy you'll with him".
এবমুক্ত্বা দিতিশ্শক্রং প্রাপ্তে মধ্যং দিবাকরে৷

নিদ্রযাপহৃতা দেবী পাদৌ কৃত্বাথ শীর্ষত:৷৷1.46.16৷৷


দিতি: দেবী Diti devi, শক্রম্ to Indra, এবম্ in this way, উক্ত্বা having spoken, দিবাকরে when Sun, মধ্যম্ mid-day, প্রাপ্তে having reached, অথ thereafter, পাদৌ feet, শীর্ষত: head side, কৃত্বা having placed, নিদ্রযা by sleep, অপহৃতা has been overcome.

After speaking thus to Indra, goddess Diti overpowered with sleep around mids-day dropped off, her feet towards her head.
দৃষ্ট্বা তামশুচিং শক্র: পাদত: কৃতমূর্ধজাম্৷

শিরস্স্থানে কৃতৌ পাদৌ জহাস চ মুমোদ চ৷৷1.46.17৷৷


শক্র: Indra, পাদত: towards her feet, কৃতমূর্ধজাম্ with the hairs falling, অশুচিম্ impure posture, তাং দৃষ্ট্বা having seen her, শিরস্স্থানে in the place where she should place her head, কৃতৈ placed, পাদৌ feet (having seen), জহাস laughed, মুমোদ চ was pleased.

Indra laughed. He rejoiced at the sight of her ominous posture of sleeping with her feet towards her head and her hair falling on her feet.
তস্যাশ্শরীরবিবরং বিবেশ চ পুরন্দর:৷

গর্ভং চ সপ্তধা রাম বিভেদ পরমাত্মবান্৷৷1.46.18৷৷


রাম O! Rama, পুরন্দর: Indra, তস্যা: her, শরীরবিবরং womb, বিবেশ চ entered, পরম্ great, আত্মবান্ courageous one, গর্ভম্ embryo, সপ্তধা seven pieces, বিভেদ severed it.

O Rama! with great courage Indra entered her womb and severed her embryo into seven pieces.
ভিদ্যমানস্ততো গর্ভো বজ্রেণ শতপর্বণা৷

রুরোদ সুস্বরং রাম ততো দিতিরবুধ্যত৷৷1.46.19৷৷


রাম O! Rama, তত: then, শতপর্বণা by the hundred edged, বজ্রেণ by Vajra, ভিদ্যমান: being severed, গর্ভ: embryo, সুস্বরম্ at high pitch, রুরোদ cried, তত: then, দিতি: Diti, অবুধ্যত woke up.

O Rama! that embryo, being severed by Vajra having a hundred edges, cried at high pitch which awakened Diti".
মা রুদো মা রুদশ্চেতি গর্ভং শক্রোভ্যভাষত৷

বিভেদ চ মহাতেজা রুদন্তমপি বাসব:৷৷1.46.20৷৷


মা রুদ: "Do not weep", মা রুদ: "Do not weep", ইতি শক্র: Indra, গর্ভম্ addressing embryo, অভ্যভাষত spoke, মহাতেজা: highly powerful, বাসব: Indra, রুদন্তমপি even though crying, বিভেদ severed it.

Highly powerful Indra, even while saying to the crying embryo "Do not weep, Do not weep" severed it.

নিষ্পপাত ততশ্শক্রো মাতুর্বচনগৌরবাত্৷৷1.46.21৷৷

Armed with Vajra, Indra addressed Diti with folded palms, saying, "O Devi! you have slept, with your head towards your feet and your hair falling on your feet".
তদন্তরমহং লব্ধ্বা শক্রহন্তারমাহবে৷

অভিদং সপ্তধা দেবি তন্মে ত্বং ক্ষন্তুমর্হসি৷৷1.46.23৷৷


অহম্ I, তত্ that, অন্তরম্ opportunity, লব্ধ্বা having seized, আহবে in war, শক্রহন্তারম্ that one who was to be slayer of Indra, সপ্তধা into seven parts, অভিদম্ severed, দেবি O! Devi, ত্বম্ you, ক্ষংতুম্ to forgive, অর্হসি it is proper.

"I have seized the opportunity and severed into seven pieces the foetus who would have been a slayer of Indra. O Devi! shoudn't you forgive me"?
