[The Devatas restore the virility of Indra--Rama releases Ahalya from her curse- Gautama and Ahalya extend hospitality to Rama.]

aphalastu tataśśakrō dēvānagnipurōgamān.

abravīttrastavadanassarṣissaṅghān sacāraṇān৷৷1.49.1৷৷


tata: thereafter, aphala: having been deprived of his testacles, śakra: Indra, trastavadana: with freightened face, sarṣissaṅghān with groups of rishis, sacāraṇān with charanas, agnipurōgamān with Agni in the forefront, dēvān addressing devatas, abravīt spoke.

Deprived of testicles, Indra with a frightened face addressed hordes of rishis and charanas with agni in the forefront.
kurvatā tapasō vighnaṅ gautamasya mahātmana:.

krōdhamutpādya hi mayā surakāryamidaṅ kṛtam৷৷1.49.2৷৷


mahātmana: magnanimous, gautamasya Gautama's, krōdham wrath, utpādya evoking, tapasa: austerities, vighnam obstacles, kurvatā while creating, mayā by me, idam this, surakāryam the work of celestials, kṛtam has been done.

'I have accomplished the objective of the devatas by creating obstacles to Gautama's austerities, evoking in consequence the wrath of the magnanimous sage'.
aphalō.smi kṛtastēna krōdhātsā ca nirākṛtā.

śāpamōkṣēṇa mahatā tapō.syāpahṛtaṅ mayā৷৷1.49.3৷৷


tēna by his, krōdhāt wrath, aphala: deprived of testacles, kṛta: asmi I been made, sā ca also she, nirākṛtā was rejected, mahatā great, śāpamōkṣēṇa by conferring curse, asya his, tapa: ascetic energy, mayā by me, apahṛtam has been stolen.

'By his (Gautama's) wrath I have been deprived of my testicles. She (Ahalya) has been deserted by him. He has lost his ascetic energy through the pronouncement of this great curse'.
tasmātsuravarāssarvē sarṣissaṅghāssacāraṇā:! .

surasāhyakaraṅ sarvē saphalaṅ kartumarhatha৷৷1.49.4৷৷


tasmāt for that reason, sarṣisaṅghā: with hosts of rishis, sacāraṇā: with charanas, sarvē all, suravarā: excellent devatas, surasāhyakaram for the benefit of devatas, saphalam restoration of my testicles, kartum to do, arhatha it is your duty.

'For that reason, O rishis, charanas and great devatas! it is your duty to restore my testicles for the benefit I have given you'.
śatakratōrvacaśśrutvā dēvāssāgnipurōgamā:.

pitṛdēvānupētyāhu ssaha sarvairmarudgaṇai:৷৷1.49.5৷৷


sāgnipurōgamā: with Agni in the forefront, dēvā: devtas, śatakratō: Indra's (performer of one hundred sacrifices), vaca: words, śrutvā having heard, sarvē all, marudgaṇai: saha accompanied by hosts of maruts, pitṛdēvān pitrudevatas, upētya having approached, āhu: said.

'Hearing Indra, all the devatas accompanied by maruts. Lead by the Fire-god devatas approached and said':
ayaṅ mēṣassavṛṣaṇaśśakrō hyavṛṣaṇa: kṛta:.

mēṣasya vṛṣaṇau gṛhya śakrāyā.śu prayacchatha৷৷1.49.6৷৷


ayam this, mēṣa: the ram, savṛṣaṇa: has testicles, śakra: Indra, avṛṣaṇa: is without testicles, kṛta: hi has been rendered, mēṣasya ram's, vṛṣaṇau testicles, gṛhya taking, āśu immediately, śakrāya for Indra, prayacchatha furnish.

'This ram (which has received the share of your sacrificial offerings) has testicles. As
Indra has been deprived of his own take these testicles immediately and graft them on to Indra'.
aphalastu kṛtō mēṣa: parāṅ tuṣṭiṅ pradāsyati.

bhavatāṅ harṣaṇārthāya yē ca dāsyanti mānavā:৷৷1.49.7৷৷


aphala: without testicles, kṛta: made, mēṣa: the ram, bhavatām for you, parām great, tuṣṭim joy, pradāsyati will give, yē mānavā: those men, dāsyanti will give, harṣaṇārthāya for causing delight.

agnēstu vacanaṅ śrutvā pitṛdēvāssamāgatā:.

utpāṭya mēṣavṛṣaṇau sahasrākṣē nyavēśayan৷৷1.49.8৷৷


samāgatā: assembled, pitṛdēvā: pitrudevatas, agnē: Agni's, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, mēṣavṛṣaṇau testicles of ram, utpāṭya extracting, sahasrākṣē for Indra, nyavēśayan grafted.

Hearing the words of the Fire-god the pitrudevatas assembled, uprooted the testicles of the ram and grafted them on to Indra.
tadā prabhṛti kākutstha! pitṛdēvāssamāgatā:.

aphalān bhuñjatē mēṣān phalaistēṣāmayōjayan৷৷1.49.9৷৷


kākutstha O! Kakutstha, samāgatā: assembled, pitṛdēvā: pitrudevatas, tadā prabhṛti then onwards, aphalān without genitals, mēṣān rams, bhuñjatē accepted as offerings, tēṣām their, phalai: their testicles, ayōjayan having fitted.

"O Son of the Kakutsthas! from then on the pitrudevatas have been accepting rams without testicles as offerings in a sacrifice, with ram's testicles fitted on to Indra.
indrastu mēṣavṛṣaṇastadāprabhṛti rāghava!.

gautamasya prabhāvēna tapasaśca mahātmana:৷৷1.49.10৷৷


rāghava O! Rama, mahātmana: illustrious, gautamasya Gautama's, tapasa: ascetism, prabhāvēna with the power of, indra: tu Indra, tadāprabhṛti thenceforth, mēṣavṛṣaṇa: ca testicles of ram.

O Son of the Raghus! illustrious Gautama's power of ascetism was such that thenceforth Indra possessed the testicles of a ram.
tadāgaccha mahātēja āśramaṅ puṇyakarmaṇa:.

tārayaināṅ mahābhāgāmahalyāṅ dēvarūpiṇīm৷৷1.49.11৷৷


mahātēja: O! Highly lustrous Rama, tat therefore, puṇyakarmaṇa: of the pious one, āśramam hermitage of Gautama, āgaccha enter, mahābhāgām fortunate, dēvarūpiṇīm woman of divine appearance, ēnām this, ahalyāṅ Ahalya, tāraya liberate.

"Most brilliant Rama! therefore enter the hermitage of the pious (Gautama) and liberate this fortunate Ahalya of divine appearance (from the curse)."
viśvāmitravacaśśrutvā rāghavassahalakṣmaṇa:.

viśvāmitraṅ puraskṛtya tamāśramamathāviśat৷৷1.49.12৷৷


sahalakṣmaṇa: along with Lakshmana, rāghava: Rama, viśvāmitravaca: the words of Visvamitra, śrutvā having listened, atha thereafter, viśvāmitram Viswamitra, puraskṛtya keeping him ahead, tam that, āśramam hermitage, āviśat entered.

In response to the words of Viswamitra Rama and Lakshmana entered the hermitage, Viswamitra in front.
dadarśa ca mahābhāgāṅ tapasā dyōtitaprabhām.

lōkairapi samāgamya durnirīkṣyāṅ surāsurai:৷৷1.49.13৷৷

prayatnānnirmitāṅ dhātrā divyāṅ māyāmayīmiva.

sa tuṣārāvṛtāṅ sābhrāṅ pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva৷৷1.49.14৷৷

madhyēṅ.bhasō durādharṣāṅ dīptāṅ sūryaprabhāmiva.


mahābhāgām highly fortunate, tapasā with the power of ascetism, dyōtitaprabhām shining brilliantly, lōkairapi by men, surāsurai: by suras or asuras, samāgamya joined together, durnirīkṣyām incapable of being seen, dhātrā by lord Brahma, prayatnāt with special efforts, nirmitām created, divyām divine, māyāmayīmiva looking like illusory image, tuṣārāvṛtām covered by mist, sābhrām with clouds, pūrṇacandraprabhāmiva looking like brightness of full moon, ambhasa: in the sky, madhyē in the midst, durādharṣām inviolable, dīptām shining, sūryaprabhāmiva like brightness of sun, sa: Rama, dadarśa beheld.

Rama beheld the highly fortunate Ahalya, shining brilliantly with the power of her asceticism. She could not be seen even by men, suras or asuras joined together. She looked divine and illusory as if created with special efforts by Brahma. Though not clearly visible, she was shining bright like the light of the full Moon muffled by mists in the sky and like the inviolable light of the Sun reflected in the water.
sā hi gautamavākyēna durnirīkṣyā babhūva ha৷৷1.49.15৷৷

trayāṇāmapi lōkānāṅ yāvadrāmasya darśanam.


sā she, gautamavākyēna with the words of Gautama, rāmasya Rama's, darśanamyāvat till the appearance of Rama, trayāṇāmapi lōkānām even for three worlds, durnirīkṣyā incapable of being seen by any, babhūva ha became.

By the words of Gautama, she became invisible to the three worlds till the appearance of Rama.
śāpasyāntamupāgamya tēṣāṅ darśanamāgatā৷৷1.49.16৷৷

rāghavau tu tatastasyā: pādau jagṛhatustadā.


śāpasya curse's, antam end, upāgamya having reached, tēṣām their, darśanam appearance, āgatā obtained, tata: afterwards, rāghavau Rama and Lakshmana, tadā then, tasyā: her, pādau feet, jagṛhatu: touched.

With the expiry of the period of the curse, the Raghavas (Rama and Lakshmana) speared and she became perceptible when Rama touched her feet.
smarantī gautamavaca: pratijagrāha sā ca tau৷৷1.49.17৷৷

pādyamarghyaṅ tathā৷৷tithyaṅ cakāra susamāhitā.

pratijagrāha kākutsthō vidhidṛṣṭēna karmaṇā৷৷1.49.18৷৷


sā ca she also, gautamavaca: words of Gautama, smarantī recalling, tau them, pratijagrāha received with due honours, susamāhitā with concentration of mind and attention, pādyam water for washing feet, arghyam offerings of reverence, tathā and, ātithyam hospitality, vidhidṛṣṭēna according to tradition, karmaṇā by acts, cakāra performed, kākutsthaḥ Kakusthsa, pratijagrāha received.

Recalling the words of Gautama, she received them with water to wash their feet and offerings made with due devotion Rama accepted her hospitality extended in accordance tradition.
puṣpavṛṣṭirmahatyāsīddēvadundubhinisvanai:.

gandharvāpsarasāṅ caiva mahānāsītsamāgama:৷৷1.49.19৷৷


dēvadundubhinisvanai: amidst sounds of divine kettle drums, mahatī great, puṣpavṛṣṭi āsīt flowers rained, gaṅdharvāpsarasām caiva of gandharvas and apsarasas also, mahān great, samāgama: union āsīt took place.

Amidst sounds of celestial kettle-drums, devatas showered flowers, gandharvas sang and apsarasa danced. There was a great assemblage (of divinities).
sādhu sādhviti dēvāstāmahalyāṅ samapūjayan.

tapōbalaviśuddhāṅgī gautamasya vaśānugām৷৷1.49.20৷৷


gautamasya Gautama's, vaśānugām in the possession of, tapōbalaviśuddhāṅgīm her body purified by the power of penance, tām that, ahalyām Ahalya, dēvā: devatas, sādhu sādhu iti 'Excellent', 'Excellent', samapūjayan exclaimed.

On seeing Ahalya, her body purified by the power of penance at Gautama's command, the devatas worshipfully exclaimed, 'Excellent, Excellent!'
gautamō.pi mahātējā ahalyāsahitassukhī.

rāmaṅ sampūjya vidhivattapastēpē mahātapā:৷৷1.49.21৷৷


mahātapā: possessed of great ascetism, mahātējā: highly glorious, gautamō.pi Gautama also, ahalyāsahita: accompanied by Ahalya, sukhī full of joy, rāmam Rama, vidhivat according to tradition, sampūjya having worshipped, tapa: austerities, tēpē performed.

Brilliant Gautam, the great ascetic, along with Ahalya, worshipped Rama according to tradition, with delight and continued with his austerities.
rāmō.pi paramāṅ pūjāṅ gautamasya mahāmunē:.

sakāśādvidhivatprāpya jagāma mithilāṅ tata:৷৷1.49.22৷৷


rāmō.pi Rama also, gautamasya mahāmunē: of the great ascetic Gautama, sakāśāt from him, paramām great, pūjām hospitality, vidhivat according to tradition, prāpya having received, mithilām towards Mithila, jagāma had gone.

Having received due hospitality from the great ascetic Gautama Rama also set out towards Mithila.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ēkōnapañcāśassargaḥ৷৷
Thus ends the fortyninth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic
composed by sage Valmiki.
