[Satananda describes the efforts and achievements of Viswamitra to Rama.]

tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā viśvāmitrasya dhīmata:.

hṛṣṭarōmā mahātējāśśatānandō mahātapā:৷৷1.51.1৷৷

gautamasya sutō jyēṣṭhastapasā dyōtitaprabha:.

rāmasandarśanādēva paraṅ vismayamāgata:৷৷1.51.2৷৷


dhīmata: intellectual, tasya viśvāmitrasya this Visvamitra's, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having heard, mahātējā: possessing great splendour, mahātapā: great austerities, gautamasya Gautama's, jyēṣṭha: eldest, suta: son, tapasā with ascetism, dyōtitaprabha: effulgent, śatānanda: Satananda, hṛṣṭarōmā: thrilled, rāmasandarśanādēva on beholding Rama, param great, vismayam astonishment, āgata: obtained.

Satananda the eldest son of Gautama, a great sage who looked brilliant with the power of austerities was thrilled to hear the words of Viswamitra the intellectual and experienced great astonishment on beholding Rama.
sa tau niṣaṇṇau samprēkṣya sukhāsīnau nṛpātmajau.

śatānandō muniśrēṣṭhaṅ viśvāmitramathāmabravīt৷৷1.51.3৷৷


atha afterwards, sa: śatānanda: Satananda, niṣaṇṇau sitting nearby, sukhāsīnau comfortably seated, tau nṛpātmajau the two princes, samprēkṣya having seen, muniśrēṣṭham foremost of ascetics, viśvāmitram addressing Visvamitra, abravīt said.

Satananda saw the two princes comfortably seated nearby and said to Viswamitra, the foremost of the ascetics:
api tē muniśārdūla mama mātā yaśasvinī.

darśitā rājaputrāya tapō dīrghamupāgatā৷৷1.51.4৷৷


muniśārdūla O! Tiger (great) among ascetics, dīrgham for long period, tapa: austerities, upāgatā having acquired, yaśasvinī renowned, mama my, mātā mother, tē by you, rājaputrāya to the prince, api darśitā has been show?

"O Tiger among ascetics, was my renowned mother who had been practising intense austerities for long shown to the prince (Rama)?
api rāmē mahātējā mama mātā yaśasvinī.

vanyairupāharatpūjāṅ pūjārhē sarvadēhinām৷৷1.51.5৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous, yaśasvinī celebrated, mama mātā my mother, sarvadēhinām for all living beings, pūjārhē worthy of reverence, rāmē to Rama, vanyai: with things available in forest, pūjām homage, api upāharat did she offer?

Did my highly lustrous and celebrated mother offer homage to Rama, worthy of reverence by all living beings, with things available in the forest?
api rāmāya kathitaṅ yathāvṛttaṅ purātanam.

mama māturmahātējō daivēna duranuṣṭhitam৷৷1.51.6৷৷


mahātēja: O! Highly powerful one, mama to my, mātu: mother, daivēna by god, duranuṣṭhitam badly done, purātanam formerly, yathāvṛttam as happened, rāmāya to Rama, api kathitam was told?

O highly powerful sage, was Rama told the old story about the misdeed of god (Indra) to my mother?
api kauśika bhadraṅ tē guruṇā mama saṅgatā.

mama mātā muniśrēṣṭha rāmasandarśanādita:৷৷1.51.7৷৷


kauśika O! Visvamitra, tē bhadram prosperity to you, muniśrēṣṭha O! best among ascetics, mama mātā my mother, rāmasandarśanāt ita: in consequence of beholding Rama here, mama my, guruṇā with father, api saṅgatā has been united?

O Son of Kushika (Viswamitra)! be blessed. O the best among the ascetics, as a result of beholding Rama, was my mother united with my father?
api mē guruṇā rāma: pūjita: kuśikātmaja!.

ihāgatō mahātējā: pūjāṅ prāptō mahātmana:৷৷1.51.8৷৷


kuśikātmaja O! Son of Kusika, rāma: Rama, guruṇā by my father, api pūjita: was honoured, iha here, āgata: having arrived, mahātējā: most brilliant, mahātmana: of the illustrious (Rama), pūjām honours, api prāpta: has obtained.

O Son of Kushika! was Rama honoured by my father? Was my most brilliant father honoured by illustrious Rama when he arrived?
api śāntēna manasā gururmē kuśikātmaja! .

ihā.gatēna rāmēṇa prayatēnābhivādita:৷৷1.51.9৷৷


kuśikātmaja! O! Kusika's son, iha here, āgatēna came, prayatēna piously disposed, rāmēṇa by Rama, mē guru: my father, śāntēna with tranquil, manasā mind, api abhivādita: saluted respectfully?

O Kushika's son! did pious Rama welcome my father with a tranquil mind when he arrived?"
tacchrutvā vacanaṅ tasya viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.

pratyuvāca śatānandaṅ vākyajñō vākyakōvidam৷৷1.51.10৷৷


mahāmuni: great sage, viśvāmitra: Viswamitra, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having heard, vākyajña: knowledgeable in words, vākyakōvidam proficient in words, śatānandam addressing Satananda, pratyuvāca replied.

Great sage Viswamitra equipped with the knowledge of words heard Satananda who was proficient in speech. And replied:
nātikrāntaṅ muniśrēṣṭha yatkartavyaṅ kṛtaṅ mayā.

saṅgatā muninā patnī bhārgavēṇēva rēṇukā৷৷1.51.11৷৷


muniśrēṣṭha O! Best of ascetics, na atikrāntam (nothing) was omitted, mayā by me, yat which, kartavyam required to be done, kṛtam has been done, rēṇukā Renuka, bhārgavēṇa iva like with Bhrugu's son, Jamadagni, patnī wife Ahalya, muninā with the sage, Gautama, saṅgatā was united.

O Best of ascetics (Satananda)! All that is required to be done has been done and nothing was omitted. Ahalya was united with sage Gautama like Renuka with Jamadagni.
tacchrutvā vacanaṅ tasya viśvāmitrasya bhāṣitam .

śatānandō mahātējā rāmaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷1.51.12৷৷


tasya viśvāmitrasya Visvamitra's, bhāṣitam having been spoken, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having listened, mahātējā: highly splendrous, śatānanda: Satananda, rāmam addressing Rama, vacanam these words, abravīt said.

Having heard Viswamitra the highly brilliant Satananda said to Rama:
svāgataṅ tē naraśrēṣṭha diṣṭyā prāptō.si rāghava!.

viśvāmitraṅ puraskṛtya maharṣimaparājitam৷৷1.51.13৷৷


naraśrēṣṭha O! Chief of men, rāghava Rama, aparājitam invincible, maharṣim maharshi, viśvāmitram Viswamitra, puraskṛtya keeping him in front, diṣṭyā fortunately, prāpta: asi you have come, tē svāgatam welcome to you.

"O Best of men! O Son of the Raghus you are fortunate to have come here following
the invincible maharshi Viswamitra. Welcome to you.
acintyakarmā tapasā brahmarṣiratulaprabha:.

viśvāmitrō mahātējā vētsyēnaṅ paramāṅ gatim৷৷1.51.14৷৷


mahātējā: possessing high lustre, viśvāmitra: Viswamitra, acintyakarmā performed deeds defying imagination, tapasā by his austerities, brahmarṣi: Brahmarshi, atulaprabha: possessing unsurpassed radiance, ēnam him, paramām supreme, gatim resort, vētsi you knew.

Highly lustrous Viswamitra has performed deeds which defy all imagination. By his austerities, he became Brahmarshi and possesses unparalleled radiance. Know him to be the supreme resort.
nāsti dhanyatarō rāma tvattō.nyō bhuvi kaścana.

gōptā kuśikaputrastē yēna taptaṅ mahattapa:৷৷1.51.15৷৷


rāma Rama!, bhuvi on this earth, tvatta: more than you, dhanyatara: more fortunate, anya: other, kaścana none, nāsti does not exist, yēna by whom, mahat great, tapa: austerities, taptam having been performed, kuśika putra: son of Kusika, tē to you, gōptā protector.

Rama! Son of Kushika (Viswamitra) who has performed great austerities is your protector. Therefore, there is none on this earth more fortunate than you.
śrūyatāṅ cābhidhāsyāmi kauśikasya mahātmana:.

yathā balaṅ yathā vṛttaṅ tanmē nigadata: śruṇu৷৷1.51.16৷৷


mahātmana: magnanimous, kauśikasya Visvamitra's, balam power, yathā as to how, vṛttam history, yathā as to how, abhidhāsyāmi I shall tell, tat that, nigadata: being described, mē from me, śṛṇu listen.

I shall tell you about the power and achievement of the magnanimous son of Kushika Viswamitra. Listen!
rājā.bhūdēṣa dharmātmā dīrghakālamarindama:.

dharmajña: kṛtavidyaśca prajānāṅ ca hitē rata:৷৷1.51.17৷৷


ēṣa: this Viswamitra, dharmātmā righteous minded, arindama: subduer of enemies, dharmajña: knower of righteousness, kṛtavidya: acquired knowledge in all branches of learning, prajānāṅ of the subjects, hitē welfare, rata: delighted, rājā as king, dīrghakālam abhūt ruled for long time.

This righteous-minded sage, subduer of enemies, knower of dharma knowledgeable in
all branches of learning, devoted to the welfare of his subjects ruled as a king for long.
prajāpatisutaścāsītkuśō nāma mahīpati:.

kuśasya putrō balavān kuśanābhassudhārmika:৷৷1.51.18৷৷


prajāpatisuta: son of Prajapati, kuśō nāma named Kusa, mahīpati: āsīt there was a king, balavān strong, sudhārmika: supremely righteous, kuśanābha: Kusanabha, kuśasya putra: son of Kusa.

There was a king named Kusa who was the son of Brahma. His son was Kusanabha who was supremely righteous and strong.
kuśanābhasutastvāsīdgādhirityēva viśrṛta:.

gādhē: putrō mahātējā viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:৷৷1.51.19৷৷


gādhi: ityēva known as Gadhi, viśrṛta: well-known, kuśanābhasuta: āsīt was the son of Kusnabha, mahātējā: highly lustrous, mahāmuni: mighty ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, gādhē: Gadhi's, putra: son.

Well-known Gadhi was the son of Kusanabha. Highly lustrous and mighty ascetic Viswamitra is the son of Gadhi.
viśvāmitrō mahātējā: pālayāmāsa mēdinīm.

bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi rājā rājyamakārayat৷৷1.51.20৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, mēdinīm the earth, pālayāmāsa ruled, rājā this king, bahuvarṣasahasrāṇi for many thousands of years, rājyam kingdom, akārayat ruled.

Highly lustrous Viswamitra ruled the earth. As a king he ruled over his kingdom for thousands of years.
kadācittu mahātējā yōjayitvā varūthinīm.

akṣauhīṇīparivṛta: paricakrāma mēdinīm৷৷1.51.21৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous that Visvamitra, kadācit once, varūthinīm his army, yōjayitvā having assembled, akṣauhīṇīparivṛta: surrounded by army of the magnitude of Akshauhini, mēdinīm the earth, paricakrāma gone round.

Once that highly lustrous Viswamitra having assembled his army of the magnitude of akshauhini went round the earth.
nagarāṇi sarāṣṭrāṇi saritaśca tathā girīn.

āśramānkramaśō rāma vicarannājagāma ha৷৷1.51.22৷৷

vasiṣṭhasyāśramapadaṅ nānāvṛkṣasamākulam.

nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṅ siddhacāraṇasēvitam৷৷1.51.23৷৷

dēvadānavagandharvai: kinnarairupaśōbhitam.

praśāntahariṇākīrṇaṅ dvijasaṅghaniṣēvitam৷৷1.51.24৷৷

brahmarṣigaṇasaṅkīrṇaṅ dēvarṣigaṇasēvitam.

tapaścaraṇasaṅsiddhairagnikalpairmahātmabhi:৷৷1.51.25৷৷

abbhakṣairvāyubhakṣaiśca śīrṇaparṇāśanaistathā.

phalamūlāśanairdāntairjitarōṣairjitēndriyai:৷৷1.51.26৷৷

ṛṣibhirvālakhilyaiśca japahōmaparāyaṇai:.

anyairvaikhānasaiścaiva samantādupaśōbhitam৷৷1.51.27৷৷


rāma Rama!, sarāṣṭrāṇi together with kingdoms, nagarāṇi cities, sarita: rivers, tathā and, girīn mountains, āśramān hermitages, kramaśa: regularly, vicaran while wandering, nānāvṛkṣasamākulam crowded with various kinds of trees, nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇam filled with various species of animals, siddhacāraṇasēvitam attended by siddhas and charanas, dēvadānavagandharvai: devatas, danavas, gandharvas, kinnarai: kinnaras, upaśōbhitam shining, praśāntahariṇākīrṇam scattered with serene deers, dvijasaṅghaniṣēvitam inhabited by multitude of birds, brahmarṣigaṇasaṅkīrṇam intermingled with hosts of brahmarshis, dēvarṣigaṇasēvitam attended by hosts of devarishis, tapaścaraṇasaṅsiddhai: by those who attained perfection through their austerities, agnikalpai: by those resembling fire in brightness, mahātmabhi: by the magananimous, abbhakṣai: by those subsisting on water only, vāyubhakṣaiśca by those subsisting on air, tathā and, śīrṇaparṇāśanai: by those living on fallen leaves as their food, phalamūlāśanai: by those living on fruits and roots as their food, dāntai: by the self-restrained, jitarōṣai: by those who have conquered anger, jitēndriyai: by those who controlled senses, ṛṣibhi: by sages, japahōmaparāyaṇai: by those who were devoted to prayers and offerings of libations, vālakhilyai: with Valakhilyas (sages born from Brahma and have the size of thumb), anyai: by others, vaikhānasaiścaiva by Vaikhanasa (born from the nails of Brahma), samantāt every where, upaśōbhitam shining with brightness, vasiṣṭhasya Vasishta's, āśramapadam hermitage, ajagāma reached.

Rama! while Viswamitra was wandering about kingdoms, cities, rivers, mountains and hermitages, he gradually reached the ashram of Vasishta. That hermitage afounded in a variety of trees, species of animals, siddhas, charanas, devatas, danavas, gandharvas and kinnaras, multitudes of birds and resting deer. It was inhabited by brahmarshis and devarishis, by sages who had attained perfection through austerities, by those resembling fire in brightness, by the magnanimous and the self-restrained, by those who had conquered anger and controlled their senses, who was devoted to prayers and offerings of libations. Some of them subsisted on water, some on air. Some lived on fallen leaves, some on fruits and roots. The hermitage looked bedecked with valakhilyas (born from Vala of Brahma ) and vaikhanasas (born from the nails of Brahma).
vasiṣṭhasyāśramapadaṅ brahmalōkamivāparam.

dadarśa jayatāṅ śrēṣṭhō viśvāmitrō mahābala:৷৷1.51.28৷৷


jayatām of the conquerors, śrēṣṭha: foremost, mahābala: highly powerful, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, aparam a second, brahmalōkamiva like Brahmaloka, vasiṣṭhasya sage Vasishta's, āśramapadam hermitage, dadarśa saw.

Highly powerful Viswamitra, foremost among the conquerors, (thus) saw the hermitage of Vasishta which looked like another Brahmaloka.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ēkapañcāśassarga:.
Thus ends the fiftyfirst sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
