[Vasishta orders Kamadhenu to create things necessary for the hospitality to king Viswamitra.]

sa dṛṣṭvā paramaprītō viśvāmitrō mahābala:.

praṇatō vinayādvīrō vasiṣṭhaṅ japatāṅ varam৷৷1.52.1৷৷


mahābala: very mighty, vīra: heroic, sa: viśvāmitra: that Visvamitra, japatām varam greatest among those performing religious prayers, vasiṣṭham Vasishta, dṛṣṭvā having seen, paramaprīta: exceedingly happy, vinayāt out of respect, praṇata: offered respectful salutations.

Overwhelmed with joy the mighty, heroic Viswamitra upon seeing Vasishta, the greatest among ascetics, was and offered respectful salutations.
svāgataṅ tava cētyuktō vasiṣṭhēna mahātmanā.

āsanaṅ cāsya bhagavān vasiṣṭhō vyādidēśa ha৷৷1.52.2৷৷


tava to you, svāgatam iti welcome (saying so), mahātmanā by the magnanimous, vasiṣṭhēna by Vasishta, uktaśca spoken also, bhagavān adorable, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, asya for him, āsanaṅ ca seat also, vyādidēśa ha ordered.

Adorable Vasishta received Viswamitra with words of welcome and ordered a seat for him.
upaviṣṭāya ca tadā viśvāmitrāya dhīmatē.

yathānyāyaṅ munivara: phalamūlamupāharat৷৷1.52.3৷৷


tadā then, munivara: excellent of ascetics, upaviṣṭāya having seated, dhīmatē sagacious, viśvāmitrāya for Visvamitra, yathānyāyam in accordance with tradition, phalamūlam fruits and roots, upāharat offered.

With the sagacious Viswamitra seated the great ascetic, duly offered him fruits and roots.
pratigṛhya tu tāṅ pūjāṅ vasiṣṭhādrājasattama:.

tapōgnihōtraśiṣyēṣu kuśalaṅ paryapṛcchata৷৷1.52.4৷৷

viśvāmitrō mahātējā vanaspatigaṇē tathā .

sarvatra kuśalaṅ cāha vasiṣṭhō rājasattamam৷৷1.52.5৷৷


rājasattama: foremost among kings, mahātējā: highly splendrous, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, vasiṣṭhāt from Vasishta, tām pūjām that hospitality, pratigṛhya having received, tapōgnihōtraśiṣyēṣu with regard to his austerities, his fire-sacrifices and his disciples, tathā and, vanaspatigaṇē trees (in his hermitage), kuśalam welfare, paryapṛcchata enquired, vasiṣṭha: ca Vasishta also, sarvatra in all of them, kuśalam welfare, rājasattamam for the best of kings, āha informed.

Foremost among kings, the brilliant Viswamitra, having received hospitality from Vasishta, enquired about his welbeing his austerities, his fire-sacrifices, his disciples and trees (in his hermitage). Vasishta, too, informed him of the welfare of all.
sukhōpaviṣṭaṅ rājānaṅ viśvāmitraṅ mahātapā:.

papraccha japatāṅ śrēṣṭhō vasiṣṭhō brahmaṇassuta:৷৷1.52.6৷৷


japatām among those performing religious prayers, śrēṣṭha: greatest, mahātapā: possessing great asceticism, brahmaṇa: Brahma's, suta: son, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, sukhōpaviṣṭam sitting at ease, rājānam king, viśvāmitram Visvamitra,papraccha enquired.

Vasishta, son of Brahma, the greatest among those who recite prayers and possess rich asceticism enquired of king Viswamitra comfortably seated (before him):
kaccittē kuśalaṅ rājan kacciddharmēṇa rañjayan.

prajā: pālayasē vīra rājavṛttēna dhārmika৷৷1.52.7৷৷


rājan O! King, tē kuśalam kaccit is it well with you?, dhārmika O! Righteous one, vīra O! Heroic one, prajā: subjects, dharmēṇa conforming to morality, rañjayan delighting, rājavṛttēna in accordance with the duties enjoined upon the king, pālayasē kaccit are you ruling?

"O King, is it all well with you? O righteous one! O heroic one! are you ruling (your subjects) in accordance with the duties enjoined upon the king? Do you rule them in conformity with the code of moralit in order to make them happy.
kaccittē sambhṛtā bhṛtyā: kaccittiṣṭhanti śāsanē.

kaccittē vijitāssarvē ripavō ripusūdana !৷৷1.52.8৷৷


kaccit whether, tē your, bhṛtyā: servants, sambhṛtā: are well provided? śāsanē in your commands, tiṣṭhanti abide?, ripusūdana O! Destroyer of foes, tē your, ripava: foes, sarvē all, vijitā: have been conquered.

Are your servants provided well with their requirements? Do they abide by your command? O Destroyer of foes! have all your enemies been conquered ?
kaccidbalēṣu kōśēṣu mitrēṣu ca parantapa.

kuśalaṅ tē naravyāghra putrapautrē tavānagha !৷৷1.52.9৷৷


kaccit whether, parantapa O! Tormentor of enemies, anagha O! Sinless one, naravyāghra O! Tiger (best) among men, balēṣu in your army, kōśēṣu in your treasury, mitrēṣu in your friends, tava your, putrapautrē sons and grandsons, tē kuśalam is it well with you?

O Tormentor of enemies! O Sinless one! O Tiger among men! is it all well with your army, treasury, friends, sons and grandsons?
sarvatra kuśalaṅ rājā vasiṣṭhaṅ pratyudāharat.

viśvāmitrō mahātējā vasiṣṭhaṅ vinayānvita:৷৷1.52.10৷৷


mahātējā: highly lustrous, rājā king, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, vasiṣṭham Vasishta, vinayānvita: with great discipline, vasiṣṭham prati addressing Vasishta, sarvatra all that, kuśalam welfare, udāharat conveyed.

Highly brilliant king Viswamitra, humbly informed Vasishta that all was well.
kṛtvōbhau suciraṅ kālaṅ dharmiṣṭhau tā: kathā: śubhā:.

mudā paramayā yuktau prīyētāṅ tau parasparam৷৷1.52.11৷৷


dharmiṣṭhau virtuous, tau ubhau both of them, paramayā with great, mudā delight, yuktau abosrbed, suciram kālam for a long time, śubhā: auspicious, tā: kathā: anecedotes relating to various matters, kṛtvā having made, parasparam each other, prīyētām were pleased.

Both the righteous personalities dwelt at length on various matters and interesting anecdotes with great delight and derived mutual pleasure.
tatō vasiṣṭhō bhagavān kathā.ntē raghunandana !.

viśvāmitramidaṅ vākyamuvāca prahasanniva৷৷1.52.12৷৷


raghunandana O! Descendent of Raghu, tata: then, bhagavān venerable, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, kathā.ntē after the conversation had ended, prahasanniva smiling as it were, viśvāmitram addressing Viswamitra, idaṅ this, vākyam word, uvāca spoke.

O Descendent of Raghu! at the end of the conversation, venerable Vasishta, smiling as
it were said to Viswamitra
ātithyaṅ kartumicchāmi balasyāsya mahābala !.

tava caivāpramēyasya yathārhaṅ sampratīccha mē৷৷1.52.13৷৷


mahābala O! Highly powerful, asya of this, balasya for army, apramēyasya incomparable, tava caiva to you as well, yathārham in an appropriate manner, ātithyam hospitality, kartum to offer, icchāmi I am desirous, mē from me, sampratīccha you may accept.

O Highy powerful Viswamitra! I wish to offer appropriate hospitality to you and to your incomparable army. Be pleased to accept it.
satkriyāṅ tu bhavānētāṅ pratīcchatu mayōdyatām.

rājā tvamatithiśrēṣṭha: pūjanīya: prayatnata:৷৷1.52.14৷৷


bhavān you, mayā by me, udyatām extended, satkriyām honours, pratīcchatu accept, rājā king, tvam you, prayatnata: through every effort, pūjanīya: worthy of, atithiśrēṣṭha: distinguished guest.

Please accept the honour I extend. Being a king, you are a distinguished guest. you deserve to be treated respectfully in all possible ways".
ēvamuktō vasiṣṭhēna viśvāmitrō mahāmati:.

kṛtamityabravīdrājā priyavākyēna mē tvayā৷৷1.52.15৷৷


vasiṣṭhēna by Vasishta, ēvam in this manner, ukta: spoken, mahāmati: great-minded, rājā king, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, tvayā by you, priyavākyēna with pleasing words, kṛtam iti hospitality has been extended, mē to me, abravīt spoke.

To these words of Vasishta, the great intellectual Viswamitra said, "you have spoken pleasing words. This in itself is hospitality for me".
phalamūlēna bhagavan vidyatē yattavāśramē.

pādyēnācamanīyēna bhagavaddarśanēna ca৷৷1.52.16৷৷

sarvathā ca mahāprājña pūjārhēṇa supūjita:.

gamiṣyāmi namastē.stu maitrēṇēkṣasva cakṣuṣā৷৷1.52.17৷৷


bhagavan O! Worshipful one!, yat which, tava your, āśramē in the hermitage, vidyatē is available, phalamūlēna with fruits and roots, pādyēna with the water for washing feet, ācamanīyēna ca with water for sipping, bhagavaddarśanēna by meeting your revered self, pūjārhēṇa worthy of homage, sarvathā in all ways, supūjita: excellently honoured, mahāprājña O! Profoundly wise one, gamiṣyāmi I shall go, tē nama: astu reverence to you, maitrēṇa filled with friendship, cakṣuṣā with eyes, īkṣasva look upon me.

"O Worshipful one! O Profoundly wise one! you are worthy of homage. You have excellently honoured me in all possible ways with whatever fruits and roots available in your hermitage, with water for washing feet and for sipping. You have permitted me darshan with your revered self. I shall leave (now). My regards! Look upon me with eyes of friendship".
ēvaṅ bruvantaṅ rājānaṅ vasiṣṭha:punarēva hi.

nyamantrayata dharmātmā puna:punarudāradhī:৷৷1.52.18৷৷


ēvam in this way, bruvantam speaking, rājānam king, dharmātmā righteous minded, udāradhī: sagacious, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, punarēva in return, puna: puna: again and again, nyamantrayata implored.

As the king was addressing thus the righteous and generous Vasishta, repeatedly requested him to accept his hospitality.
bāḍhamityēva gādhēyō vasiṣṭhaṅ pratyuvāca ha.

yathā priyaṅ bhagavatastathā.stu munipuṅgava!৷৷1.52.19৷৷


gādhēya: the son of Gadhi, vasiṣṭham addressing Vashishta, munipuṅgava! O! Pre-eminent among sages, bāḍham be it so, bhagavata: venerable, yathā in whatever way, priyaṅ (abhimatam) desire, tathā astu let it be done in that way.

The son of Gadhi said to Vasishta, "O Pre-eminent among sages, be it so, O venerable one! they will be done".
ēvamuktō mahātējā vasiṣṭhō japatāṅ vara:.

ājuhāva tata: prīta: kalmāṣīṅ dhūtakalmaṣa:৷৷1.52.20৷৷


mahātējā: highly splendrous, japatāṅ vara: greatest among those who perform religious meditation, dhūtakalmaṣa: free from sins, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, prīta: pleased, tata: thereafter, kalmāṣīm the speckled cow, ājuhāva called.

Vasishta who was highly brilliant the greatest among those who meditate (on Brahman) and free from sins was pleased. Thereafter he called the speckled cow (Kamadhenu):
ēhyēhi śabalē kṣipraṅ śrṛṇu cāpi vacō mama.

sabalasyāsya rājarṣē:kartuṅ vyavasitō.smyaham৷৷1.52.21৷৷

bhōjanēna mahārhēṇa satkāraṅ saṅvidhatsva mē.


śabalē O! Sabala, kṣipram quickly, ēhi (ēhi) come on, mama my, vaca: words, śrṛṇu ca api also listen, aham I, mahārhēṇa in a befitting manner, bhōjanēna with food, asya rājarṣē: for this royal saint, sabalasya together with his army, satkāram honour, kartum to extend, vyavasita: asmi I have decided, mē to me, saṅvidhatsva make arrangemets.

"O Sabala, come on quick! Listen to my words. I have decided to honour this royal saint and his army with excellent food. Make necessary arrangemets.
yasya yasya yathākāmaṅ ṣaḍrasēṣvabhipūjitam.

tatsarvaṅ kāmadhukkṣipramabhivarṣa kṛtē mama৷৷1.52.22৷৷


kāmadhuk O! Kamadhenu, yasya yasya to whom so ever, ṣaḍrasēṣu among six kinds of tastes, abhipūjitam which is desired, tatsarvam all that, yathākāmam in a manner desired, mama kṛtē for my sake, kṣipram quickly, abhivarṣa rained (grant).

O Kamadhenu! quickly entertain them for my sake with the food of six kinds of tastes (varieties of rich dishes) as desired by each.
rasēnānnēna pānēna lēhyacōṣyēṇa saṅyutam.

annānāṅ nicayaṅ sarvaṅ sṛjasva śabalē tvara৷৷1.52.23৷৷


śabalē O! Sabala, in the form of liquid, annēna with solid food, rasēna pānēna with liquids which can be drunk, lēhyacōṣyēṇa which can be licked and sipped, saṅyutam endowed with, sarvam all that, annānāṅ of the food items, nicayam in collecion, sṛjasva create, tvara hasten.

O Sabala! create at once all food items consisting of liquids and solids for drinking, tasting and siping."
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē dvipañcāśassarga:.
Thus ends the fiftysecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
