[Viswamitra invites the sages to perform the sacrifice - curses the sons of Vasishta and Mahodaya.]

uktavākyaṅ tu rājānaṅ kṛpayā kuśikātmaja:.

abravīnmadhuraṅ vākyaṅ sākṣāccaṇḍālarūpiṇam৷৷1.59.1৷৷


uktavākyam having the words spoken, sākṣāt evident to the senses, caṇḍālarūpiṇam chandala form, rājānam king, kṛpayā out of pity, kuśikātmaja: Visvamitra, madhuram sweet, vākyam words, abravīt spoken.

What the king said was proved by his chandala form which the son of Kushika (Viswamitra) heard and out of compassion spoke these sweet words:
aikṣvāka svāgataṅ vatsa jānāmi tvāṅ sudhārmikam .

śaraṇaṅ tē bhaviṣyāmi mā bhaiṣīrnṛpapuṅgava!৷৷1.59.2৷৷


aikṣvāka O! Descendant of Ikshvakus, vatsa child, svāgatam welcome, tvām you, sudhārmikam as highly righteous one, jānāmi I know you, nṛpapuṅgava O! Eminent among kings, mābhaiṣī: fear not, tē to you, śaraṇam refuge, bhaviṣyāmi I shall become.

"O Descendant of Ikshvakus, O child, welcome. I know you as highly righteous. O eminent among kings! fear not. I offer you refuge.
ahamāmantrayē sarvānmaharṣīnpuṇyakarmaṇa:.

yajñasāhyakarān rājan! tatō yakṣyasi nirvṛta:৷৷1.59.3৷৷


aham I, puṇyakarmaṇa: men of pious deeds, yajñasāhyakarān to assist in the sacrifice, sarvān all, maharṣīn maharshis, āmantrayē I shall invite, nirvṛta: with relief, yakṣyasi you will perform the sacrifice.

O king! I shall invite pious maharshis to assist you in the sacrifice which you will be able to perform with great relief.
guruśāpakṛtaṅ rūpaṅ yadidaṅ tvayi vartatē .

anēna saha rūpēṇa saśarīrō gamiṣyasi৷৷1.59.4৷৷


guruśāpakṛtam as a result of the curse of spiritual preceptor, yat which, rūpam form, tvayi in you, vartatē existing, anēna by this, rūpēṇa saha with form, saśarīra: with the physical body, gamiṣyasi you shall go.

With the present physical body disfigured by the curse of your spiritual preceptor, you shall go to heaven.
hastaprāptamahaṅ manyē svargaṅ tava narādhipa!.

yastvaṅ kauśikamāgamya śaraṇyaṅ śaraṇāgata:৷৷1.59.5৷৷


narādhipa! O! King, ya: such that, tvam you, śaraṇyam fit to take refuge in, kauśikam Visvamitra, āgamya having reached, śaraṇāgataḥ have taken refuge, tava for you, svargam heaven, hastaprāptam already in your hand, manyē I consider.

O King! since you have taken refuge in Viswamitra who is the protector of those who resort to him, I think heaven is already within your reach".
ēvamuktvā mahātējā: putrān paramadhārmikān.

vyādidēśa mahāprājñān yajñasambhārakāraṇāt৷৷1.59.6৷৷


mahātējā: most brilliant, ēvam thus, uktvā having spoken, paramadhārmikān highly virtuous, mahāprājñān great intellectuals, putrān sons, yajñasambhārakāraṇāt to make preparations for sacrifice, vyādidēśa ordered.

Most brilliant Viswamitra having thus spoken, ordered his deeply religious and highly
learned sons to make preparations for the sacrifice.
sarvān śiṣyān samāhūya vākyamētaduvāca ha.

sarvānṛṣigaṇānvatsā ānayadhvaṅ mamājñayā.

saśiṣyasuhṛdaścaiva sartvija ssabahuśrutān৷৷1.59.7৷৷


sarvān all, śiṣyān disciples, samāhūya having summoned, ētat this, vākyam word, uvāca ca said, vatsā: O! Children, mama my, ājñayā with the order, saśiṣyasuhṛdaścaiva with their disciples and friends, sartvija: with the officiating priests, subahuśrutān well-learned persons, sarvānṛṣigaṇān hosts of rishis, ānayadhvam you may bring them.

He summoned all his disciples, and said, "Children! bring here hosts of rishis along with their disciples and friends, officiating priests and persons well-versed in the Srutis. This is my order.
yadanyō vacanaṅ brūyānmadvākyabalacōdita:.

tatsarvamakhilēnōktaṅ mamākhyēyamanādṛtam৷৷1.59.8৷৷


anya: any other one, madvākyabalacōdita: incited by the strength of my words, yat which , vacanam word, brūyātatha may speak, akhilēna entirely, uktam spoken, anādṛtam with disrespect, tat sarvam all that, mama to me, akhyēyam should be reported.

If any one should speak with disrespect in response to my order, you may report the matter to me in full".
tasya tadvacanaṅ śrutvā diśō jagmustadājñayā.

ājagha dēśēbhya ssarvēbhyō brahmavādina:৷৷1.59.9৷৷


tasya his, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having listened, tadājñayā by his order, diśa: in different directions, jagmu: went, atha thereafter, sarvēbhya: from all, dēśēbhya: countries, brahmavādina: expounders of veda, ājagmu: arrived.

At his command the disciples set out in different directions. And as a result, expounders of the vedas began arriving from various countries.
tē ca śiṣyā: samāgamya muniṅ jvalitatējasam.

ūcuścavacanaṅ sarvē sarvēṣāṅ brahmavādinām৷৷1.59.10৷৷


tē śiṣyā: those disciples, sarvē all, samāgamya having returned, jvalitatējasam shining with splendour, munim sage visvamitra, sarvēṣām of all, brahmavādinām of the expounders of veda, vacanam words, ūcuśca told.

All the disciples on their return, communicated to the sage shining in splendour what the expounders of the vedas had said.
śrutvā tē vacanaṅ sarvē samāyānti dvijātaya:.

sarvadēśēṣu cāgacchan varjayitvā mahōdayam৷৷1.59.11৷৷


tē your, vacanam words, śrutvā having heard, sarvē all, dvijātaya: brahmins, samāyānti are coming, mahōdayaṅ varjayitvā except mahodaya, sarvadēśēṣu from all countries, āgacchan have arrived.

Having heard your words, all brahmins except Mahodaya have arrived from all countries.
vāsiṣṭhaṅ tacchataṅ sarvaṅ krōdhaparyākulākṣaram.

yadāha vacanaṅ sarvaṅ śṛṇu tvaṅ munipuṅgava!৷৷1.59.12৷৷


munipuṅgava! O! Pre-eminent among ascetics, sarvam all, tat śatam vāsiṣṭham that hundred sons of Vasishta, krōdhaparyākulākṣaram speech confused with anger, yat which, vacanam word, āha have spoken, sarvam all that, tvam you, śṛṇu listen.

O Pre-eminent among ascetics! Here is what the hundred sons of Vasishta spoke in anger.
kṣatriyō yājakō yasya caṇḍālasya viśēṣata:.

kathaṅ sadasi bhōktārō havistasya surarṣaya:৷৷1.59.13৷৷


yasya for whom, kṣatriya: kshatriya, yājaka: priest of the sacrifice, viśēṣata: particularly, caṇḍālasya of a chandala, tasya for him, sadasi in the sacrifice, surarṣaya: devatas and sages, havi: offerings, katham how, bhōktāra: will partake.

When a kshatriya acts as a priest for the sacrifice, particularly for a chandala, how can gods and sages partake the offerings?
brāhmaṇā vā mahātmānō bhuktvā caṇḍālabhōjanam.

kathaṅ svargaṅ gamiṣyanti viśvāmitrēṇa pālitā:৷৷1.59.14৷৷


viśvāmitrēṇa by Visvamitra, pālitā: ruled, mahātmāna: magnanimous, brāhmaṇā: vā brahmins, cāṇḍālabhōjanam food offered by a chandala, bhuktvā having partaken, svargam heaven, katham how, gamiṣyanti will attain.

Joining Viswamitra, (in chanting the mantras during the yaga) how will the great brahmins attain heaven after partaking the food offered by of Chandala?
ētadvacananaiṣṭhuryamūcu ssaṅraktalōcanā:.

vāsiṣṭhā muniśārdūla sarvē tē samahōdayā:৷৷1.59.15৷৷


muniśārdūla O! Best among ascetics, samahōdayā: along with mahodaya, tē sarvē all of those, vāsiṣṭhā: sons of Vasishta, saṅraktalōcanā: with reddened eyes, ētat this, vacananaiṣṭhuryam harsh word, ūcu: spoke.

O Best among ascetics! all the sons of Vasishta along with Mahodaya with their eyes reddened in anger spoke these harsh words":
tēṣāṅ tadvacanaṅ śrutvā sarvēṣāṅ munipuṅgava:.

krōdhasaṅraktanayana ssarōṣamidamabravīt৷৷1.59.16৷৷


munipuṅgava: pre-eminent among ascetics, tēṣāṅ sarvēṣām all their, tat vacanam those words, śrutvā having heard, krōdhasaṅraktanayana: with eyes reddened with anger, sarōṣam with fury, idam this word, abravīt spoke.

On hearing the words (of the hundred sons of Vasishta uttered in anger) Viswamitra, pre-eminent among ascetics, spoke furiously with eyes reddened in anger.
yē dūṣayantyaduṣṭaṅ māṅ tapa ugraṅ samāsthitam.

bhasmībhūtā durātmānō bhaviṣyanti na saṅśaya:৷৷1.59.17৷৷


ugram rigorous, tapa: penance, āsthitam adopted, aduṣṭam free from blemish, mām me, yē who, dūṣayanti abused, durātmāna: wicked-minded ones, bhasmībhūtā: reduced to ashes, bhaviṣyanti will become, saṅśaya: na no doubt.

"I am blameless. I have practised rigorous penance. These wicked ones who have abused (a sage like me) will be reduced to ashes.
adya tē kālapāśēna nītā vaivasvatakṣayam.

saptajātiśatānyēva mṛtapassantu sarvaśa:৷৷1.59.18৷৷


tē they, adya today itself, kālapāśēna by noose of death, vaivasvatakṣayam to the abode of Yama, nītā: having been brought, saptajātiśatānyēva seven hundred births, sarvaśa: in all ways, mṛtapā: feeding on corpses, santu shall become.

Caught by the noose of death this day, they shall be brought to the abode of Yama and for seven hundred births, feed on corpses.
śvamāṅsaniyatāhārā muṣṭikā nāma nirghṛṇā:.

vikṛtāśca virūpāśca lōkānanucarantvimān৷৷1.59.19৷৷


nirghṛṇā: merciless, muṣṭikā nāma born in the race of mushtikas, śvamāṅsaniyatāhārā feeding on the flesh of dogs, vikṛtāśca hideous, virūpāśca deformed, imān lōkān in these worlds, anucarantu shall wander.

Reborn as the merciless race of mushtikas, feeding on the flesh of dogs, hideous and deformed, they shall wander in these worlds.
mahōdayastu durbuddhirmāmadūṣyaṅ hyadūṣayat.

dūṣita ssarvalōkēṣu niṣādatvaṅ gamiṣyati৷৷1.59.20৷৷


durbuddhi: wicked-minded, mahōdayastu as for Mahodaya, adūṣyam not fit to be blamed, mām me, adūṣayat hi blamed me, sarvalōkēṣu in all the worlds, dūṣita: having been blamed, niṣādatvam nishadahood, gamiṣyati will attain.

The wicked Mahodaya, who blamed a sage like me so faultless shall be re-born in the race of the nishadas vulnerable to abuse by all.
prāṇātipātaniratō niranukrōśatāṅ gata:.

dīrghakālaṅ mama krōdhāddurgatiṅ vartayiṣyati৷৷1.59.21৷৷


mama my, krōdhāt because of anger, prāṇātipātaniratō depriving others of their life regularly, niranukrōśatām devoid of mercy, gata: attaining, dīrghakālam for a long time, durgatim wretched life, vartayiṣyati will pursue.

As a consequence of my anger that Mahodaya, devoid of mercy and taking pleasure in depriving others of their life, will pursue a wretched life for a long time".
ētāvaduktvā vacanaṅ viśvāmitrō mahātapā:.

virarāma mahātējā ṛṣimadhyē mahāmuni:৷৷1.59.22৷৷


mahātapā: possessing fierce asceticism, mahātējā: highly powerful, mahāmuni: mighty ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, ṛṣimadhyē in the assembly of rishis, ētāvat to this extent, vacanam words, uktvā having spoken, virarāma became silent.

The most powerful sage Viswamitra of fierce asceticism fell silent after after uttering
this curse in the assembly of rishis.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ēkōnaṣaṣṭitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the fiftyninth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
