தஸ்யாஂ புர்யாமயோத்யாயாஂ வேதவித்ஸர்வஸங்க்ரஹ: .

தீர்கதர்ஷீ மஹாதேஜா: பௌரஜாநபதப்ரிய: ৷৷1.6.1৷৷

இக்ஷ்வாகூணாமதிரதோ யஜ்வா தர்மரதோ வஷீ .

மஹர்ஷிகல்போ ராஜர்ஷிஸ்த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு விஷ்ருத: ৷৷1.6.2৷৷

பலவாந்நிஹதாமித்ரோ மித்ரவாந்விஜிதேந்த்ரிய: .

வேதவித் well-versed in vedas, ஸர்வஸங்க்ரஹ: commanding all resources, தீர்கதர்ஷீ far sighted, மஹாதேஜா: possessing great splendour, பௌரஜாநபதப்ரிய: dear to the inhabitants in towns and villages, இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் among Ikshvaku kings, அதிரத: a great charioteer capable of fighting with many maharathas single-handedly, யஜ்வா performer of sacrifices, தர்மரத: devoted to the practice of dharma, வஷீ in full control over his subjects, மஹர்ஷிகல்ப: equal to a great sage, ராஜர்ஷி: royal saint, த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு in the three worlds (Bhooloka, Bhuvarloka, Suvarloka), விஷ்ருத: renowned, பலவாந் possessed of strength, நிஹதாமித்ர: destroyer of enemies, மித்ரவாந் having friends, விஜிதேந்த்ரிய: having perfect control over his senses, தநைஷ்ச with wealth, அந்யை: other riches, ஸங்க்ரஹைஷ்ச accumulated possessions, ஷக்ரவைஷ்ரவணோபம: comparable to Indra and Kubera, ராஜா தஷரத: king Dasaratha, தஸ்யாம் in that, (அயோத்யயா) புர்யாம் city of Ayodhya, வஸந் living, லோகஸ்ய for the entire world, பரிரக்ஷிதா protector, மஹாதேஜா: highly powerful, மநு: Manu, யதா as, ததா in that manner, ஜகத் world, அபாலயத் ruled.

From that city of Ayodhya, king Dasaratha ruled the entire world, following the tradition of Manu who was a highly powerful protector of the people. Dasaratha was
well versed in the Vedas. He commanded all resources. Far-sighted, he possessed great prowess. He was dear to the inhabitants of towns and villages. Among Ikshvaku kings, he was a great charioteer capable of fighting with many maharathas single-handed. He performed many sacrifices and was devoted to the practice of dharma. He was in full control over his subjects. He was a great sage, a royal saint and renowned in the three worlds (Bhooloka, Bhuvarloka and Suvarloka). He was mighty. He was a destroyer of enemies. He had scores of good friends. He had perfect control over his senses. In riches, he was comparable to Indra and Kubera.
தேந ஸத்யாபிஸந்தேந த்ரிவர்கமநுதிஷ்டதா .

பாலிதா ஸா புரீ ஷ்ரேஷ்டா இந்த்ரேணேவாமராவதீ ৷৷1.6.5৷৷


ஸத்யாபிஸந்தேந bound by his promise, த்ரிவர்கம் dharma, artha and kama (righteousness, attainment of riches or worldly prosperity and pleasure considered as three of the four ends of life, the fourth one being moksha), அநுதிஷ்டதா by the strict followerm, தேந by the king Dasaratha, ஷ்ரேஷ்டா best of cities, ஸா புரீ that city of Ayodhya, இந்த்ரேண by Indra, அமராவதீ Amaravati, இவ like, பாலிதா ruled.

King Dasaratha, who always kept his word and followed dharma, attained prosperity and pleasure in equal measure by righteous means ruled that best of the cities as Indra ruled Amaravati.
தஸ்மிந்புரவரே ஹரிஷ்டா தர்மாத்மாநோ பஹுஷ்ருதா: .

நராஸ்துஷ்டா தநைஸ்ஸ்வைஸ்ஸ்வைரலுப்தாஸ்ஸத்யவாதிந: ৷৷1.6.6৷৷


தஸ்மிந் In that, புரவரே excellent city, நரா: people, ஹரிஷ்டா: happy, தர்மாத்மாந: virtuous, பஹுஷ்ருதா: widely learned, ஸ்வை:ஸ்வை: of their own, தநை: riches and possessions, துஷ்டா: contended, அலுப்தா: without greed, ஸத்யவாதிந: were speaking truth.

The people living in that excellent city were happy, virtuous, well-read (in the Vedas and the sastras) and content with the possessions of their own. They were free from avarice. And always spoke the truth.
நால்பஸந்நிசய: கஷ்சிதாஸீத்தஸ்மிந் புரோத்தமே .

குடும்பீ யோ ஹ்யஸித்தார்தோகவாஷ்வதநதாந்யவாந் ৷৷1.6.7৷৷


தஸ்மிந் In that, புரோத்தமே best of cities, ய: who, அல்பஸந்நிசய: one who accumulated the riches in smaller quantities, அஸித்தார்த: had not fulfilled (dharma, artha and kama), அகவாஷ்வதநதாந்யவாந் prosperous in wealth of foodgrains, cattle and horses, குடும்பீ householder, கஷ்சித் even one, நாஸீத் did not exist.

In that best of cities, there was not even a single householder who had not adequate wealth or who had not achieved dharma, artha and kama or who did not possess the wealth of foodgrains, cattle and horses.
காமீ வா ந கதர்யோ வா நரிஷஂஸ: புருஷ: க்வசித் .

த்ரஷ்டுஂ ஷக்யமயோத்யாயாந்நாவித்வாந்ந ச நாஸ்திக: ৷৷1.6.8৷৷


காமீ lustful person, ந கதர்யோ வா miser (who tortures parents, wife, sons and sisters), நரிஷஂஸ: cruel, புருஷ: man, அயோத்யாயாம் in Ayodhya, க்வசித் anywhere, த்ரஷ்டும் to be seen, ந ஷக்யம் not possible, அவித்வாந் ந not scholarly, நாஸ்திக: atheist, ந not.

The lustful, the miserly, the unscholarly and atheists were not to be seen anywhere in the city of Ayodhya.
ஸர்வே நராஷ்ச நார்யஷ்ச தர்மஷீலாஸ்ஸுஸஂயதா: .

உதிதாஷ்ஷீலவரித்தாப்யாஂ மஹர்ஷய இவாமலா: ৷৷1.6.9৷৷


ஸர்வே all, நராஷ்ச men, நார்யஷ்ச women, தர்மஷீலா: righteous in conduct, ஸுஸஂயதா: fully self-controlled, ஷீலவரித்தாப்யாம் with good conduct and behaviour, உதிதா: prospering, மஹர்ஷய: இவ like maharshis, அமலா: pure.

All men and women (in the city) were of righteous conduct, fully self-controlled and prosperous with good conduct and behaviour. They were pure like maharshis.
நாகுண்டலீ நாமகுடீ நாஸ்ரக்வீ நால்பபோகவாந் .

நாமரிஷ்டோ நாநுலிப்தாங்கோ நாஸுகந்தஷ்ச வித்யதே ৷৷1.6.10৷৷


அகுண்டலீ without ear-ornaments, ந வித்யதே there was none, அமகுடீ without coronet, ந none, அஸ்ரக்வீ without wearing garlands, ந none, அல்பபோகவாந் deficient in worldly enjoyments, ந none, அமரிஷ்ட: unclean (cleansed without applying oil before bath), ந none, நாநுலிப்தாங்க: without having his limbs anointed, அஸுகந்தஷ்ச without applying fragrant substances on his body, ந none.

In the city, there was none without ear-ornaments, without coronet, without wearing garlands and none unclean. And none without the anointment of fragrants on the body.
நாமரிஷ்டபோஜீ நாதாதா நாப்யநங்கதநிஷ்கதரிக் .

நாஹஸ்தாபரணோ வாபி தரிஷ்யதே நாப்யநாத்மவாந் ৷৷1.6.11৷৷


அமரிஷ்டபோஜீ eating the food without full satisfaction, ந தரிஷ்யதே cannot be seen, அதாதா person without charitable nature, ந none, அநங்கதநிஷ்கதரிக் அபி also without wearing bracelets on the upper arms and ornament around the neck, ந none, அஹஸ்தாபரணோ வாபி without wearing hand-ornaments, ந none, அநாத்மவாநபி one who had not restrained his self, ந none.

(In the city of Ayodhya) there was no one who did not eat food to full satisfaction and was not charitable. None was found without wearing ornaments on the hands and bracelets on the upper arms and around the neck. Also no one could be seen who had not restrained his passions and emotions.
நாநாஹிதாக்நிர்நாயஜ்வா ந க்ஷுத்ரோ வா ந தஸ்கர: .

கஷ்சிதாஸீதயோத்யாயாந்ந ச நிர்வரித்தஸங்கர: ৷৷1.6.12৷৷


அயோத்யாயாம் In the city of Ayodhya, அநாஹிதாக்நி: person who did not kindle sacrificial fire, ந ஆஸீத் did not exist, அயஜ்வா not performing sacrifices, ந none, க்ஷுத்ர: mean-minded, ந none, தஸ்கர: thief, ந none, நிர்வரித்தஸங்கர: improper descent of mixed castes, கஷ்சித் even one, ந none.

In the city of Ayodhya there was none who did not kindle the sacrificial fire. There was none who did not perform a sacrifice. There were no thieves or mean-minded persons or persons of improper descent of mixed castes.
ஸ்வகர்மநிரதா நித்யஂ ப்ராஹ்மணா விஜிதேந்த்ரியா: .

தாநாத்யயநஷீலாஷ்ச ஸஂயதாஷ்ச பரிக்ரஹே ৷৷1.6.13৷৷


ப்ராஹ்மணா: The brahmins, நித்யம் always, ஸ்வகர்மநிரதா: interested in the performance of their duties, விஜிதேந்த்ரியா: having control over senses, தாநாத்யயநஷீலா:ச having the nature of charity and self-study, ஸஂயதாஷ்ச self-controlled with regard to, பரிக்ரஹே accepting charity, ஸஂயதாஷ்ச the marital relations were confined, பரிக்ரஹே to their wives.

The brahmins were always interested in the performance of their duties. They had control over their senses. They were charitable and studious. They were self-controlled while accepting charity and maintaining marital relations.
ந நாஸ்திகோ நாநரிதகோ ந கஷ்சிதபஹுஷ்ருத: .

நாஸூயகோ ந சாஷக்தோ நாவித்வாந்வித்யதே ததா ৷৷1.6.14৷৷


ததா during that period, கஷ்சித் even one, நாஸ்திக: atheist, ந none, அநரிதக: speaking untruthful statements, ந none, அபஹுஷ்ருத: not very learned in sastras, ந none, அஸூயக: a detractor who finds faults in others (a jealous man), ந none, அஷக்த: incompetent, ந none, அவித்வாந் not scholarly, ந none.

That time there was no atheist, no liar and none ignorant of the sastras. There was no one who was jealous, incompetent or illiterate.
நாஷடங்கவிதத்ராஸீந்நாவ்ரதோ நாஸஹஸ்ரத: .

ந தீந: க்ஷிப்தசித்தோ வா வ்யதிதோ வாபி கஷ்சந ৷৷1.6.15৷৷


அத்ர in that city of Ayodhya, அஷடங்கவித் not well-versed in the six vedangas (Siksha, Vyakarana, Chhandas, Nirukta, Jyotisha and Kalpa), நாஸீத் did not exist, அவ்ரத: who did not perform religious vows, ந none, அஸஹஸ்ரத: who would not donate in thousands, ந none, தீந: distressed or miserable, க்ஷிப்தசித்தோ வா agitated mind, ந none, வ்யதித: vexed, கஷ்சந not even one.

There was no brahmin who was not well versed in the Vedangas or who did not perform religious vows. There was not even one who would not donate in thousands. There was no one distracted or depressed.
கஷ்சிந்நரோ வா நாரீ வா நாஷ்ரீமாந்நாப்யரூபவாந் .

த்ரஷ்டுஂ ஷக்யமயோத்யாயாஂ நாபி ராஜந்யபக்திமாந் ৷৷1.6.16৷৷


அயோத்யாயாம் in Ayodhya, நரோ வா man, நாரீ வா or woman, கஷ்சித் even one, அஷ்ரீமாந் not endowed with wealth, அரூபவாந் அபி without beauty, த்ரஷ்டும் to see , ந ஷக்யம் not possible, ராஜநி in the king, அபக்திமாந் not devoted, ந none.

In Ayodhya, there was no man or woman who was not endowed with wealth or beauty. It was not possible to see any one who had no devotion for the king.
வர்ணேஷ்வக்ர்யசதுர்தேஷு தேவதாதிதிபூஜகா:.

கரிதஜ்ஞாஷ்ச வதாந்யாஷ்ச ஷூரா விக்ரமஸஂயுதா: ৷৷1.6.17৷৷

தீர்காயுஷோ நராஸ்ஸர்வே தர்மஂ ஸத்யஂ ச ஸஂஷ்ரிதா: .

ஸஹிதா: புத்ரபௌத்ரைஷ்ச நித்யஂ ஸ்த்ரீபி: புரோத்தமே ৷৷1.6.18৷৷


புரோத்தமே in that best of cities, அக்ர்யசதுர்தேஷு in the first of the four orders, வர்ணேஷு in castes, ஸர்வே all, நரா: men, தேவதாதிதிபூஜகா: worshipped the gods and guests, கரிதஜ்ஞாஷ்ச endowed with gratitude, வதாந்யாஷ்ச munificient, ஷூரா: heroic, விக்ரமஸஂயுதா: possessing prowess, தீர்காயுஷ: long-lived, நித்யம் always, புத்ரபௌத்ரை: with sons and grandsons, ஸ்த்ரீபி: wives, ச ஸஹிதா: surrounded by, தர்மம் righteousness, ஸத்யம் ச truth, ஸஂஷ்ரிதா: resorted to.

There in Ayodhya the best of cities, the first of the four castes (brahmins) used to worship gods and guests. They had the sense of gratitude. They were munificient, heroic and possessed prowess. They lived long. They were righteous and truthful. And they lived together with their sons, grandsons and wives.
க்ஷத்ரஂ ப்ரஹ்மமுகஂ சாஸீத்வைஷ்யா: க்ஷத்ரமநுவ்ரதா: .

ஷூத்ராஸ்ஸ்வதர்மநிரதாஸ்த்ரீந்வர்ணாநுபசாரிண: ৷৷1.6.19৷৷


க்ஷத்ரம் the kshatriya (warrior) caste, ப்ரஹ்மமுகம் ஆஸீத் was obedient to brahmins, வைஷ்யா: merchants, க்ஷத்ரம் warriors, அநுவ்ரதா: followed, ஷூத்ரா: sudras, த்ரீந் three, வர்ணாந் castes, உபசாரிண: assisted, ஸ்வதர்மநிரதா: fully occupied in their respective professions.

The kshatriyas were obedient to brahmins and vaisyas followed kshatriyas. Sudras assisted the three castes and all were fully occupied in their respective professions.
ஸா தேநேக்ஷ்வாகுநாதேந புரீ ஸுபரிரக்ஷிதா .

யதா புரஸ்தாந்மநுநா மாநவேந்த்ரேண தீமதா ৷৷1.6.20৷৷


ஸா புரீ that city, புரஸ்தாத் previously, மாநவேந்த்ரேண foremost among men, தீமதா by the supreme person in wisdom, மநுநா by Manu, யதா in the manner administered as, தேந by that, இக்ஷ்வாகுநாதேந protector of Ikshvaku race emperor Dasaratha, ஸுபரிரக்ஷிதா was ably governed.

That city was ably governed by Dasaratha, scion of the Ikshvakus, in the same way as it was previously administered by (Manu), the foremost among men and and the most intelligent.

ஸம்பூர்ணா கரிதவித்யாநாஂ குஹா கேஸரிணாமிவ ৷৷1.6.21৷৷


அக்நிகல்பாநாம் of men comparable to a flaming fire, பேஷலாநாம் of experts, அமர்ஷிணாம் determined, கரிதவித்யாநாம் accomplished in the learning of science of arms, யோதாநாம் warrior, கேஸரிணாம் resembling lions, குஹா இவ like mountain caves, ஸம்பூர்ணா filled with.

It abounded with warriors, like a cave with lions. They were almost like flaming fire, the most determined among experts and accomplished in learning (the science of arms).
காம்போஜவிஷயே ஜாதைர்பாஹ்லீகைஷ்ச ஹயோத்தமை: .

வநாயுஜைர்நதீஜைஷ்ச பூர்ணா ஹரிஹயோத்தமை:৷৷1.6.22৷৷


காம்போஜவிஷயே in the region of Kambhoja, ஜாதைஃ born, பாஹ்லீகை: in the region of Bahlika, வநாயுஜை: in the region of Vanayu, நதீஜைஷ்ச in the region of Sindhu, ஹரிஹயோத்தமை: by excellent horses like the Indra's horse called Ucchaisrava, ஹயோத்தமை: by excellent horses, பூர்ணா full of.

ஷஷாஸ ஷமிதாமித்ரோ நக்ஷத்ராணீவ சந்த்ரமா: ৷৷1.6.27৷৷


மஹாதேஜா: possessing great splendour, மஹாந் revered, ராஜா தஷரத: king Dasaratha, ஷமிதாமித்ர: by soothing his foes, தாம் that, புரீம் city of Ayodhya, சந்த்ரமா: Moon, நக்ஷத்ராணீவ like stars, ஷஷாஸ ruled.

Mighty king Dasaratha, of great brilliance vanquished his foes and ruled the city like the Moon over the stars.

தரிடதோரணார்கலாம் having strong gates and solid locks, விசித்ரை: by excellent, கரிஹை: edifices, உபஷோபிதாம் adorned, ஷிவாம் auspicious, நரிஸஹஸ்ரஸங்குலாம் teeming with thousands of men, ஸத்யநாமாம் true to its name, அயோத்யாஂ invincible, புரீம் city of Ayodhya, ஷக்ரஸம: equal to Indra, மஹீபதி: king Dasaratha, ஷஷாஸ வை ruled.

The king who equalled Indra (in splendour) ruled the invincible city of Ayodhya true to its name with its strong gates and solid locks. It was adorned with wonderful edifices teeming with thousands of men.
