[Trisanku ascends to heaven and gets expelled by Indra-Viswamitra creates another heaven for him]

tapōbalahatān kṛtvā vāsiṣṭhān samahōdayān.

ṛṣimadhyē mahātējā viśvāmitrō.bhyabhāṣata৷৷1.60.1৷৷


mahātējā: most brilliant, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, samahōdayān together with Mahodaya, vāsiṣṭhān sons of Vasishta, tapōbalahatān having destroyed by his power of asceticism, kṛtvā made, ṛṣimadhyē seated in the midst of saints, abhyabhāṣata said.

The most brilliant Viswamitra, having destroyed the sons of Vasishta including Mahodaya by his ascetic power, said this in the midst of saints:
ayamikṣvākudāyādastriśaṅkuriti viśruta:.

dharmiṣṭhaśca vadānyaśca māṅ caiva śaraṇaṅ gata:৷৷1.60.2৷৷

tēnānēna śarīrēṇa dēvalōkajigīṣayā.


ikṣvākudāyāda: born in the Ikshavaku race, triśaṅkuriti as Trishanku by name, viśruta: well-known, dharmiṣṭha: virtuous, vadānyaśca munificient, ayam this person, tēna such, anēna śarīrēṇa with this physical body, dēvalōkajigīṣayā with the intention of conquering deva- loka, mām me, śaraṇaṅ gata: sought refuge.

"This religious and generous king born in the Ikshvaku race, well-known as Trisanku sought my refuge to gain heaven with his physical body,
yathā.yaṅ svaśarīrēṇa svargalōkaṅ gamiṣyati৷৷1.60.3৷৷

tathā pravartyatāṅ yajñē bhavadbhiśca mayā saha.


ayam this (king), svaśarīrēṇa with his physical body, svargalōkam to heaven, yathā in whichever manner, gamiṣyati will go, tathā in that manner, bhavadbhi: by you, mayā saha along with me, yajña: sacrifice, pravartyatām be performed.

Join me in the performance of this sacrifice in a manner by which he (Trisanku) attains heaven with his physical body".
viśvāmitravaca śśrutvā sarva ēva maharṣaya:৷৷1.60.4৷৷

ūcussamētya sahitā dharmajñā dharmasaṅhitam.


dharmajñā: knowers of spiritual law, sahitā: assembled there, sarva ēva all, maharṣaya: rishis, viśvāmitravaca: words of Visvamitra, śrutvā having listened, samētya in harmony, dharmasaṅhitam endowed with righteousness, ūcu: said.

Agreeing to these words of Viswamitra all the rishis, knowers of spiritual order and endowed with righteousness assembled there said:
ayaṅ kuśikadāyādō muni: paramakōpana:৷৷1.60.5৷৷

yadāha vacanaṅ samyagētatkāryaṅ na saṅśaya:.

agnikalpō hi bhagavān śāpaṅ dāsyati rōṣita:৷৷1.60.6৷৷


kuśikadāyāda: born in the line of Kusika, paramakōpana: is one extremely angry, ayam this man, muni: ascestic, yat vacanam whichever word, āha speaks, ētat all that, samyak properly, kāryam should be performed, na saṅśaya: no doubt, agnikalpa: he is like fire, bhagavān venerable, rōṣita: if angered, śāpam curse, dāsyati will give.

"Born in the line of Kusika, this sage is extremely choleric-tempered. Whatever he says must be properly carried out. There should be no resitation on this score. The venerable sage is like fire. He will curse us if angered.
tasmātpravartyatāṅ yajña ssaśarīrō yathā divam.

gacchēdikṣvākudāyādō viśvāmitrasya tējasā৷৷1.60.7৷৷

tathā pravartyatāṅ yajña ssarvē samadhitiṣṭhata.


tasmāt for that reason, yajña: sacrifice, pravartyatām be performed, ikṣvākudāyāda: descendent of Ikshvaku, viśvāmitrasya Visvamitra's, tējasā by spiritual power, saśarīra: with his physical frame, yathā in whatever manner, divam heaven, gacchēt may attain, tathā in that manner, yajña: sacrifice, pravartyatām may be performed, sarvē all, samadhitiṣṭhata commence.

Hence let the sacrifice be performed in such a manner that the descendant of the Ikshvakus would attain heaven with his physical body through the spiritual power of Viswamitra. All of you commence the sacrifice".
ēvamuktvā maharṣayaḥ cakrustāstā:kriyāstadā৷৷1.60.8৷৷

yājakaśca mahātējā viśvāmitrō.bhavatkratau.


maharṣaya: mahasrhis, ēvam thus, uktvā having spoken, tadā then, tāstā: different, kriyā: activities, cakru: performed, kratau in that sacrifice, mahātējā: highly lustrous, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, yājaka: abhavat became the chief officiating priest.

The maharshis having resolved performed their respective activities relating to the sacrifice. The brilliant Viswamitra acted as the chief officiating priest.
ṛtvijaścānupūrvyēṇa mantravanmantrakōvidā:৷৷1.60.9৷৷

cakru: karmāṇi sarvāṇi yathākalpaṅ yathāvidhi.


mantrakōvidā: proficient in sacred prayers, ṛtvijaśca officiating priests, mantravat in accordance with mantras, yathākalpam according to prescribed kalpa, yathāvidhi according to rules and tradition, sarvāṇi all, karmāṇi rites, ānupūrvyēṇa in accordance with their respective ranks, cakru: performed.

The officiating priests proficient in chanting mantras performed in order of their respective ranks all the rites in accordance with the Yojanakalpa adhering to codes and traditions.
tata: kālēna mahatā viśvāmitrō mahātapā:৷৷1.60.10৷৷

cakārāvāhanaṅ tatra bhāgārthaṅ sarvadēvatā:.


tata: thereafter, mahātapā: mighty ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, mahatākālēna after a long time, tatra there, sarvadēvatā: all devatas, bhāgārtham to partake their share, āvāhanaṅ cakāra invoked.

Long after, the mighty ascetic Viswamitra invoked all the gods to partake their share of offerings.
nābhyāgamaṅstadāhūtā bhāgārthaṅ sarvadēvatā:৷৷1.60.11৷৷

tata: krōdhasamāviṣṭō viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.

sruvamudyamya sakrōdhastriśaṅkumidamabravīt৷৷1.60.12৷৷


tadā then, āhūtā: invited by him, sarvadēvatā: all devatas, bhāgārtham for their share of offerings, nābhyāgaman did not come, tata: thereafter, krōdhasamāviṣṭa: seized of anger, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, mahāmuni: great ascetic, sruvam sacrificial ladle, udyamya having lifted, sakrōdha: with anger, triśaṅkum addressing Trishanku, idam this word, abravīt spoke.

When, the gods invited by him did not come to receive their share of offerings, the great ascetic Viswamitra seized with anger lifted the sacrificial ladle and said to Trisanku:
paśya mē tapasō vīryaṅ svārjitasya narēśvara! .

ēṣa tvāṅ saśarīrēṇa nayāmi svargamōjasā৷৷1.60.13৷৷

duṣprāpaṅ saśarīrēṇa divaṅ gaccha narādhipa.


narēśvara O! King, svārjitasya self-earned, mē my, tapasa: asceticism's, vīryam prowess, paśya behold, ēṣa: ōjasā (tējasā) with my might, tvām you, saśarīrēṇa with your physical body, svargam heaven, nayāmi I shall send, narādhipa O! king, duṣprāpam difficult to achieve, divam heaven, saśarīrēṇa with physical body, gaccha go.

"O King! behold the prowess of my self-earned asceticism. With my spiritual might, I shall send you to heaven with your physical body O King! go to heaven with physical body which is not possible for anybody to accomplish.
svārjitaṅ kiñcidapyasti mayā hi tapasa:phalam৷৷1.60.14৷৷

rājan svatējasā tasya saśarīrō divaṅ vraja.


rājan O! King, mayā by me, svārjitam self-earned, tapasa: phalam fruit of austerities, kiñcidapi even little, asti hi is remaining, tasya its, svatējasā by its power, saśarīra: with physical body, divam heaven, vraja you may go.

By the power of what little fruit of austerities I have earned, I shall send to heaven with your body".
uktavākyē munau tasmin saśarīrō narēśvara:৷৷1.60.15৷৷

divaṅ jagāma kākutstha munīnāṅ paśyatāṅ tadā.


kākutstha O! Rama, tasmin munau when that ascetic, uktavākyē had spoken these words, narēśvara: king, saśarīra: with his physical body, tadā then, munīnām saints, paśyatām while seeing, divam towards heaven, jagāma went.

"O Descendant of Kakustha (Rama)! when the sage had said these words, the king with his physical body ascended to heaven in the presence of the sages.
dēvalōkagataṅ dṛṣṭvā triśaṅkuṅ pākaśāsana:৷৷1.60.16৷৷

saha sarvaissuragaṇairidaṅ vacanamabravīt.


dēvalōkagatam ascending to heaven, triśaṅkum Trishanku, dṛṣṭvā having seen, sarvai: all, suragaṇai: (saha) with hosts of devatas, pākaśāsana: devendra who destroyed the demon Paka, idam vacanam this word, abravīt spoke.

On ascending to heaven Trisanku saw Indra (destroyer of Paka) along with hosts of gods. Indra said to him:
triśaṅkō gaccha bhūyastvaṅ nāsi svargakṛtālaya:৷৷1.60.17৷৷

guruśāpahatō mūḍha! pata bhūmimavākchirā:.


triśaṅkō O! Trishanku, svargakṛtālaya: inhabitant of heaven, na asi you are not fit, tvam you, bhūya: again, gaccha go back, guruśāpahataḥ doomed by the curse of your spiritual preceptor, mūḍha O! Fool, avākchirā: with head downwards, bhūmim to earth, pata fall down.

"O Trisanku! you are not fit to inhabit heaven. Go back, you fool! Doomed by the curse of your spiritual preceptor, fall on earth, head down.
ēvamuktō mahēndrēṇa triśaṅkurapatatpuna:৷৷1.60.18৷৷

vikrōśamānastrāhīti viśvāmitraṅ tapōdhanam.


mahēndrēṇa by Indra, ēvam thus, ukta: spoken, triśaṅku: Trishanku, trāhi protect me, iti so, tapōdhanam one having asceticism as wealth, viśvāmitram Viswamitra, vikrōśamāna: wailing, puna: again, apatat fell down.

Thus spoken to by Indra, Trisanku crying, "O Viswamitra, Protect me, Protect me" started falling down.
tacchrutvā vacanaṅ tasya krōśamānasya kauśika:৷৷1.60.19৷৷

rōṣamāhārayattīvraṅ tiṣṭha tiṣṭhēti cābravīt.


kauśika: Visvamitra, krōśamānasya crying, tasya his, tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having listened, tīvram severe, rōṣam anger, āhārayat fetched, tiṣṭha iti "Stay, Stay", abravīt spoke.

Having heard the wailing Trisanku, the enraged Viswamitra shouted, "Stay, Stay".
ṛṣimadhyē sa tējassvī prajāpatirivāpara:৷৷1.60.20৷৷

sṛjan dakṣiṇamārgasthān saptarṣīnaparān puna:.

nakṣatramālāmaparāmasṛjatkrōdhamūrcchita:৷৷1.60.21৷৷

dakṣiṇāṅ diśamāsthāya munimadhyē mahāyaśā:.


ṛṣimadhyē in the midst of ascetics, sa: tējasvī that mighty asctic, apara: second, prajāpati iva like Brahma, dakṣiṇamārgasthān stationed in the southern quarter, aparān other, saptarṣīn the constellation of seven new rishis (stars), sṛjan while creating, ṛṣimadhyē in the midst of ascetics, krōdhamūrcchita: swooned by anger, dakṣiṇāṅ southern, diśam direction, āsthāya after resorting to, mahāyaśā: illustrious, aparām another, nakṣatramālām group of stars, asṛjat created.

Standing in the midst of the ascetics, that mighty sage who conjured up a constellation of seven new rishis (stars) looked like another creator Brahma. Overcome by anger the illustrious sage created a new group of stars in the southern direction.
sṛṣṭvā nakṣatravaṅśaṅ ca krōdhēna kaluṣīkṛta:৷৷1.60.22৷৷

anyamindraṅ kariṣyāmi lōkō vā syādanindraka:.

daivatānyapi sa krōdhā tsraṣṭuṅ samupacakramē৷৷1.60.23৷৷


nakṣatravaṅśaṅ ca system of stars, sṛṣṭavā having created, krōdhēna out of wrath, kaluṣīkṛta: having his vision blurred, anyam another, indraṅ Indra, kariṣyāmi I will create, lōka: this world, anindraka: vā syāt or will be without Indra (saying so), sa: he daivatānyapi even devatas, krōdhāt with anger, sraṣṭum to create, samupacakramē commenced.

Having created a constellation of stars, Viswamitra out of anger said, "I will create another Indra or this world will be without Indra" and commenced to create even gods.
tata: paramasambhrāntāssarṣisaṅghāssurāsurā:.

viśvāmitraṅ mahātmānamūcu: sānunayaṅ vaca:৷৷1.60.24৷৷


tata: thereafter, paramasambhrāntā: extremely wonder-struck, sarṣisaṅghā: hosts of rishis, surāsurā: with suras and asuras, mahātmānam magnanimous, viśvāmitram Viswamitra, sānunayam in apropitiatory tone, vaca: this word, ūcu: said.

Struck with wonder and fear, hosts of rishis, suras and asuras humbly addressed Viswamitra.
ayaṅ rājā mahābhāga guruśāpaparikṣata: .

saśarīrō divaṅ yātuṅ nārhatyēva tapōdhana! ৷৷1.60.25৷৷


tapōdhana O! Maharshi, mahābhāga O! Glorious one, guruśāpaparikṣata: cursed by spiritual preceptor, ayam rājā this king, saśarīra: with his physical body, divaṅ to heaven, yātum to go, nārhatyēva is not at all worthy of.

"O Glorious maharshi, this king cursed by his spiritual preceptor is not worthy of going to heaven with his physical body".
tēṣāṅ tadvacanaṅ śrutvā dēvānāṅ munipuṅgava: .

abravītsumahadvākyaṅ kauśika: sarvadēvatā:৷৷1.60.26৷৷


munipuṅgava: pre-eminent among ascetics, kauśika: Visvamitra, tēṣām dēvānām those devatas', tat vacanam that word, śrutvā having heard, sarvadēvatā: all devatas, sumahat extremely great, vākyam this word, abravīt said.

The son of Kushika (Viswamitra), the pre-eminent ascetic heard the gods and said these praiseworthy words:
saśarīrasya bhadraṅ vastriśaṅkōrasya bhūpatē:.

ārōhaṇaṅ pratijñāya nānṛtaṅ kartumutsahē৷৷1.60.27৷৷


va: to you, bhadram prosperity, saśarīrasya with physical form, asya triśaṅkō: bhūpatē: of this king Trishanku, ārōhaṇam ascent to heaven, pratijñāya having promised, anṛtam false, kartum to make, na utsahē I do not wish.

"I wish you well! Having promised king Trisanku ascent to heaven with his physical form, I do not wish to go back on my word.
svargō.stu saśarīrasya triśaṅkōrasya śāśvata:.

nakṣatrāṇi ca sarvāṇi māmakāni dhruvāṇyatha৷৷1.60.28৷৷

yāvallōkā dhariṣyanti tiṣṭhantvētāni sarvaśa:.

matkṛtāni surā ssarvē tadanujñātumarhatha৷৷1.60.29৷৷


asya triśaṅkō: for this Trishanku, saśarīrasya with his physical form, śāśvata: eternal, svarga: astu let the heaven exist, atha matkṛtāni now created by me, ētāni sarvāṇi all these, nakṣatrāṇi stars, māmakāni as mine, sarvaśa: entirely, lōkā: worlds, yāvat as long as, dhariṣyanti shall be holding (till such time), dhruvāṇi shall be stable, tiṣṭhantu shall remain, surā: O! Devatas, tat anujñātum to give consent, arhatha it behoves of you.

Let this heaven be an eternal abode for Trisanku in his physical form! All these stars created by me shall endure as long as the worlds survive. O gods! it behoves of you to accord consent to this".
ēvamuktā: surāssarvē pratyūcurmunipuṅgavam.

ēvaṅ bhavatu bhadraṅ tē tiṣṭhantvētāni sarvaśa:৷৷1.60.30৷৷

gaganē tānyanēkāni vaiśvānarapathādbahi:.

nakṣatrāṇi muniśrēṣṭha tēṣu jyōtiṣṣu jājvalan৷৷1.60.31৷৷

avākchirāstriśaṅkuśca tiṣṭhatvamarasannibha:.


ēvam thus, uktā: addressed, sarvē surā: all devatas, munipuṅgavam to the pre-eminent among ascetics, pratyūcu: replied, ēvam bhavatu 'be it so', muniśrēṣṭha O! best among ascetics, tē bhadram prosperity to you, ētāni tāni those celebrated, anēkāni many , nakṣatrāṇi stars, vaiśvānarapathāt from the path of Vaisvanara (zodiac), bahi: outside, gaganē in the firmament, sarvaśa: in all sides, tiṣṭhantu shall stary on, tēṣu jyōtiṣṣu amidst those stars, jājvalan shining brilliantly, triśaṅkuśca Trishanku also, amarasannibha: as if immortal, avākchirā: head downwards, tiṣṭhatu shall stay on.

Thus addressed, all the gods, replied to the pre-eminent ascetic, "O Best among sages, be blessed let thy will be donel. Those many celebrated stars shall stay on all sides outside the path of Vaisvanara (zodiac) in the firmament. Amidst those stars, Trisanku, shining brilliantly like an immortal, shall stay on, head down".
anuyāsyanti caitāni jyōtīṅṣi nṛpasattamam৷৷1.60.32৷৷

kṛtārthaṅ kīrtimantaṅ ca svargalōkagataṅ yathā.


ētāni jyōtīṅṣi these stars, kṛtārtham having gained his object, kīrtimantaṅ ca illustrious, nṛpasattamam best of kings, svargalōkagataṅ yathā as if he had attained heaven, anuyāsyanti will follow.

These stars will follow this illustrious one (Trisanku), the best of kings who gained his object, as if he had attained heaven.
viśvāmitrastu dharmātmā sarvadēvairabhiṣṭuta:৷৷1.60.33৷৷

ṛṣibhiśca mahātējā bāḍhamityāha dēvatā:.


sarvadēvai: by all devatas, ṛṣibhiśca by rishis also, abhiṣṭuta: extolled, mahātējā: exceedingly energetic, dharmātmā virtuous, viśvāmitrastu Visvamitra, dēvatā: to devatas, bāḍham ityēva so be it, āha said.

In this manner extolled by all devatas and rishis, mighty and righteous Viswamitra said, 'well let it be so'.
tatō dēvā mahātmānō munayaśca tapōdhanā:.

jagmuryathā৷৷gataṅ sarvē yajñasyāntē narōttama!৷৷1.60.34৷৷


narōttama O! Best among men, Rama, tata: then, yajñasya antē at the conclusion of sacrifice, mahātmāna: magnanimous, dēvā: devatas, tapōdhanā: whose asceticism is their wealth, munayaśca saints, yathāgatam in the way they had come, jagmu: went.

"O Best among men (Rama)! then at the conclusion of the sacrifice the great gods and saints went the way they had come".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ṣaṣṭitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the sixtieth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
