[Viswamitra curses Rambha.]

surakāryamidaṅ rambhē kartavyaṅ sumahattvayā.

lōbhanaṅ kauśikasyēha kāmamōhasamanvitam৷৷1.64.1৷৷


rambhē O! Rambha, iha now, kauśikasya Kausika's, kāmamōhasamanvitam possessed by lust and passions, lōbhanam enticing, sumahat highly great, idam this, surakāryam work of devatas, tvayā by you, kartavyam fit to be done.

"O Rambha! you must entice Viswamitra by lust and passion. This important work
must be done by you in the interest of the gods".
tathōktā sā.psarā rāma sahasrākṣēṇa dhīmatā.

vrīḍitā prāñjalirvākyaṅ pratyuvāca surēśvaram৷৷1.64.2৷৷


rāma O! Rama, dhīmatā by the sagacious, sahasrākṣēṇa by Indra, tathā thus, uktā having been spoken, sā apsarā: that apsara, vrīḍitā bashfully, prañjali: with folded palms in supplication, surēśvaram leader of gods Indra, vākyam words, pratyuvāca replied.

O Rama, to these words of the sagacious, thousand-eyed Lord of the gods (Indra) that apsara with folded hands bashfully replied:
ayaṅ surapatē ghōrō viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.

ghōramutsṛjatē krōdhaṅ mayi dēva na saṅśaya:৷৷1.64.3৷৷

tatō hi mē bhayaṅ dēva prāsādaṅ kartumarhasi.


surapatē O! Lord of devatas, ayam mahāmuni: this mighty ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, ghōra: is a frightful person, dēva O! Lord, mayi in me, ghōram fearful, krōdham wrath, utsṛjatē will release, saṅśaya: na no doubt, tata: for that reason, mē my, bhayam fear, dēva O! lord, prasādam favour, kartum to do, arhasi behoves of you.

'Lord of the devatas! this mighty ascetic Viswamitra is a terrible person. He will ceratinly release on his dreadful anger (curse me). O Lord! this is my apprehension. You should excuse me'.
ēvamuktastayā rāma rambhayā bhītayā tadā৷৷1.64.4৷৷

tāmuvāca sahasrākṣō vēpamānāṅ kṛtāñjalim.


rāma O! Rama, bhītayā with fear, tayā rambhayā by that Rambha, tadā then, ēvam thus, ukta: spoken, sahasrākṣa: Indra, vēpamānām trembling, kṛtāñjalim standing with folded palms, tām addressing her, uvāca said.

O Rama! having heard Rambha trembling in fear and standing with folded palms, Indra spoke:
mābhaiṣī rambhē bhadraṅ tē kuruṣva mama śāsanam৷৷1.64.5৷৷

kōkilō hṛdayagrāhī mādhavē ruciradrumē.

ahaṅ kandarpasahita ssthāsyāmi tava pārśvata:৷৷1.64.6৷৷


rambhē O! Rambha, mā bhaiṣī: have no fear, tē bhadram safety to you, mama my, śāsanam order, kuruṣva carry out, aham I, ruciradrumē with booming trees, mādhavē in the season of Spring, hṛdayagrāhī captivating the heart, kōkila: cuckoo, kandarpasahita: in the company of Kandarpa, Cupid, tava your, pārśvata: side, sthāsyāmi will stay.

'O Rambha! have no fear. Feel safe. Carry out my order. When the trees look so beautiful in spring I shall in captivating the form of a cuckoo, stay by your side in the company of Kamadeva (Cupid).
tvaṅ hi rūpaṅ bahuguṇaṅ kṛtvā paramabhāsvaram.

tamṛṣiṅ kauśikaṅ rambhē bhēdayasva tapasvinam৷৷1.64.7৷৷


rambhē O! Rambha, tvam you, bahuguṇam displaying many romantic gestures, paramabhāsvaram highly shining, rūpam form, kṛtvā having assumed, tapasvinam mighty ascestic, tam ṛṣim that rishi, kauśikam Visvamitra, bhēdayasva break him (from penance).

O Rambha! displaying many (romantic) gestures and assuming a fascinating form, distract the mighty ascetic, Kausika (Viswamitra)'.
sā śrutvā vacanaṅ tasya kṛtvā rūpamanuttamam.

lōbhayāmāsa lalitā viśvāmitraṅ śucismitā৷৷1.64.8৷৷


sā she, tasya his, vacanam words, śrutvā having listened, anuttamam highly excellent, rūpam form, kṛtvā having asumed, lalitā beautiful, śucismitā with bright smile, viśvāmitram Visvamitra, lōbhayāmāsa allured.

At these words (of Indra), Rambha, assumed any form of excellent beauty and with a bright smile set out to allure Viswamitra.
kōkilasya ca śuśrāva valgu vyāharata: svanam.

samprahṛṣṭēna manasā tata ēnāmudaikṣata৷৷1.64.9৷৷


valgu sweet, charming, vyāharata: making notes, kōkilasya cuckoo's, svanam voice of, śuśrāva heard, tata: afterwards, samprahṛṣṭēna with a delighted, manasā mind, ēnām her, udaikṣata beheld.

Excited by the charming warble of the cuckoo, Viswamitra opened his eyes.
atha tasya ca śabdēna gītēnāpratimēna ca.

darśanēna ca rambhāyā munissandēhamāgata:৷৷1.64.10৷৷


atha afterwards, tasya that cuckoo's, śabdēna sounds, apratimēna incomparable, gītēna song, rambhāyā: with the Rambha's, darśanēna ca presence also, muni: the ascetic, sandēham doubt, āgata: arose.

On hearing the sound of the incomparable song of the cuckoo along with the sight of Rambha, a doubt arose in the mind of the ascetic.
sahasrākṣasya tatkarma vijñāya munipuṅgava:.

rambhāṅ krōdhasamāviṣṭa śśaśāpa kuśikātmaja:৷৷1.64.11৷৷


munipuṅgava: eminent ascetic, kuśikātmaja: son of Kusika, sahasrākṣasya Indra's, tat that one, karma work, vijñāya having recognised, krōdhasamāviṣṭa: seized of anger, rambhām Rambha, śaśāpa cursed.

Son of Kushika, the eminent ascetic knew it was the work of Indra. Seized with anger,
he cursed Rambha:
yanmāṅ lōbhayasē rambhē kāmakrōdhajayaiṣiṇam.

daśavarṣasahasrāṇi śailī sthāsyasi durbhagē ৷৷1.64.12৷৷


durbhagē O! Unfortunate one, rambhē Rambha, kāmakrōdhajayaiṣiṇam with a desire to conquer wrath and passion, mām me, yat since, lōbhayasē seduce me (for that reason), daśa varṣasahasrāṇi ten thousand years, śailī as rock, sthāsyasi shall become.

'O luckless Rambha, since you have endeavoured to distract me from my desire to conquer wrath and passion, you shall turn into a rock and remain so for ten thousand years'.
brāhmaṇa ssumahātējā stapōbalasamanvita:.

uddhariṣyati rambhē tvāṅ matkrōdhakaluṣīkṛtām৷৷1.64.13৷৷


rambhē O! Rambha, sumahātējā: highly splendrous, tapōbalasamanvita: endowed with the power of asceticism, brāhmaṇa: Brahmana, matkrōdhakaluṣīkṛtām fouled on account of my anger, tvām you, uddhariṣyati will liberate.

'O Rambha! an effulgent brahmin, endowed with the power of asceticism, will liberate you from this state into which you have fallen on account of my anger'.
ēvamuktvā mahātējā viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:.

aśaknuvan dhārayituṅ krōdhaṅ santāpamāgata:৷৷1.64.14৷৷


mahātējā: exceedingly lustrous, mahāmuni: great sage, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, krōdham anger, dhārayitum to contain, aśaknuvan unable, ēvam thus, uktvā having spoken, santāpam distress, āgata: experienced.

The brilliant Viswamitra, the great ascetic, now experienced remorse for his inability to contain anger.
tasya śāpēna mahatā rambhā śailī tadā.bhavat.

vacaśśṛtvā ca kandarpō maharṣēssa ca nirgata:৷৷1.64.15৷৷


tadā then, tasya his mahatā by great, śāpēna (because of )curse, rambhā Rambha, śailī abhavat became a rock, maharṣē: maharshi's, vaca: words, śrutvā having listened, kandarpa: Kandarapa, sa: ca devendra, nirgata: fled away.

This mighty curse, of the great saint transformed Rambha into a rock and sent Kamadeva and Indra to their heels.
kōpēna sa mahātējāstapō.paharaṇē kṛtē.

indriyairajitai rāma! na lēbhē śāntimātmana:৷৷1.64.16৷৷


rāma O! Rama, mahātējā: highly powerful, sa: Visvamitra, kōpēna with anger, tapōpaharaṇē in deprivation of his ascetic merit, kṛtē having been made, ajitai: with unconquered, indriyai: senses, ātmana: his own, śāntim peace, na lēbhē did not get.

"O Rama! highly powerful Viswamitra was deprived of his ascetic merit due to his
anger. He had no peace of mind for his inability to control his senses.
babhūvāsya manaścintā tapō.paharaṇē kṛtē .

naiva krōdhaṅ gamiṣyāmi na ca vakṣyē kathañcana৷৷1.64.17৷৷


tapōpaharaṇē kṛtē having been deprived of his ascetic merit, asya for him, manaścintā babhūva thought arose in his mind, krōdham anger, naiva gamiṣyāmi never shall I obtain, kathañcana in what so ever manner, na ca vakṣyē I shall not speak also.

Having been deprived of his ascetic merit, he resolved not to lose his temper nor ever breathe a word".
athavā nōcchavasiṣyāmi saṅvatsaraśatānyapi.

ahaṅ viśōṣayiṣyāmi hyātmānaṅ vijitēndriya:৷৷1.64.18৷৷


athavā further, saṅvatsaraśatānyapi even for hundreds of years, nōcchavasiṣyāmi I shall not breathe, aham I, vijitēndriya: having conquered my senses, ātmānam this body, viśōṣayiṣyāmi will emaciate.

"Further, I shall not even inhale for hundreds of years. I shall conquer my senses and dry up this body.
tāvadyāvaddhi mē prāptaṅ brāhmaṇyaṅ tapasā৷৷rjitam.

anucchavasannabhuñjāna stiṣṭhēyaṅ śāśvatīssamā:৷৷1.64.19৷৷

na hi mē tapyamānasya kṣayaṅ yāsyanti mūrtaya:.


mē for me, tapasā by austerities, ārjitam earned, brāhmaṇyam brahminhood, yāvat until, praptam is obtained, tāvat till then, anucchavasan suspending my breath, abhuñjāna: abstaining from food, śāśvatī: samā: for innumerable years, tiṣṭhēyam I shall stay, tapyamānasaya while performing austerities, mē my, mūrtaya: limbs, kṣayam deterioration, na yāsyanti will not get.

Until brahminhood is obtained by my austerities, I shall stay without breathing or eating for innumerable years. While performing penance, my limbs shall not undergo deterioration".
ēvaṅ varṣasahasrasya dīkṣāṅ sa munipuṅgava:৷৷1.64.20৷৷

cakārāpratimāṅ lōkē pratijñāṅ raghunandana!.


raghunandana! O! Rama, sa: munipuṅgava: that eminent ascetic, ēvam in this way, lōkē in this world, apratimām unparalleled, varṣasahasrasya dīkṣām religious practices for a thousand years, pratijñāṅ vow, cakāra made.

"O Descendant of Raghu! in this way that eminent ascetic took an unprecedented vow to practise penance for a thousand years".
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē catuṣṣaṣṭitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
