[Viswamitra curses Rambha.]
ஸுரகார்யமிதஂ ரம்பே கர்தவ்யஂ ஸுமஹத்த்வயா.

ரம்பே O! Rambha, இஹ now, கௌஷிகஸ்ய Kausika's, காமமோஹஸமந்விதம் possessed by lust and passions, லோபநம் enticing, ஸுமஹத் highly great, இதம் this, ஸுரகார்யம் work of devatas, த்வயா by you, கர்தவ்யம் fit to be done.
"O Rambha! you must entice Viswamitra by lust and passion. This important work
must be done by you in the interest of the gods".
ததோக்தா ஸாப்ஸரா ராம ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷேண தீமதா.
வ்ரீடிதா ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யஂ ப்ரத்யுவாச ஸுரேஷ்வரம்৷৷1.64.2৷৷

ராம O! Rama, தீமதா by the sagacious, ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷேண by Indra, ததா thus, உக்தா having been spoken, ஸா அப்ஸரா: that apsara, வ்ரீடிதா bashfully, ப்ரஞ்ஜலி: with folded palms in supplication, ஸுரேஷ்வரம் leader of gods Indra, வாக்யம் words, ப்ரத்யுவாச replied.
O Rama, to these words of the sagacious, thousand-eyed Lord of the gods (Indra) that apsara with folded hands bashfully replied:
அயஂ ஸுரபதே கோரோ விஷ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி:.
கோரமுத்ஸரிஜதே க்ரோதஂ மயி தேவ ந ஸஂஷய:৷৷1.64.3৷৷
ததோ ஹி மே பயஂ தேவ ப்ராஸாதஂ கர்துமர்ஹஸி.
கோரமுத்ஸரிஜதே க்ரோதஂ மயி தேவ ந ஸஂஷய:৷৷1.64.3৷৷
ததோ ஹி மே பயஂ தேவ ப்ராஸாதஂ கர்துமர்ஹஸி.
ஸுரபதே O! Lord of devatas, அயம் மஹாமுநி: this mighty ascetic, விஷ்வாமித்ர: Visvamitra, கோர: is a frightful person, தேவ O! Lord, மயி in me, கோரம் fearful, க்ரோதம் wrath, உத்ஸரிஜதே will release, ஸஂஷய: ந no doubt, தத: for that reason, மே my, பயம் fear, தேவ O! lord, ப்ரஸாதம் favour, கர்தும் to do, அர்ஹஸி behoves of you.
'Lord of the devatas! this mighty ascetic Viswamitra is a terrible person. He will ceratinly release on his dreadful anger (curse me). O Lord! this is my apprehension. You should excuse me'.
ஏவமுக்தஸ்தயா ராம ரம்பயா பீதயா ததா৷৷1.64.4৷৷
தாமுவாச ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷோ வேபமாநாஂ கரிதாஞ்ஜலிம்.
தாமுவாச ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷோ வேபமாநாஂ கரிதாஞ்ஜலிம்.
ராம O! Rama, பீதயா with fear, தயா ரம்பயா by that Rambha, ததா then, ஏவம் thus, உக்த: spoken, ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷ: Indra, வேபமாநாம் trembling, கரிதாஞ்ஜலிம் standing with folded palms, தாம் addressing her, உவாச said.
O Rama! having heard Rambha trembling in fear and standing with folded palms, Indra spoke:
மாபைஷீ ரம்பே பத்ரஂ தே குருஷ்வ மம ஷாஸநம்৷৷1.64.5৷৷
கோகிலோ ஹரிதயக்ராஹீ மாதவே ருசிரத்ருமே.
அஹஂ கந்தர்பஸஹித ஸ்ஸ்தாஸ்யாமி தவ பார்ஷ்வத:৷৷1.64.6৷৷
கோகிலோ ஹரிதயக்ராஹீ மாதவே ருசிரத்ருமே.
அஹஂ கந்தர்பஸஹித ஸ்ஸ்தாஸ்யாமி தவ பார்ஷ்வத:৷৷1.64.6৷৷
ரம்பே O! Rambha, மா பைஷீ: have no fear, தே பத்ரம் safety to you, மம my, ஷாஸநம் order, குருஷ்வ carry out, அஹம் I, ருசிரத்ருமே with booming trees, மாதவே in the season of Spring, ஹரிதயக்ராஹீ captivating the heart, கோகில: cuckoo, கந்தர்பஸஹித: in the company of Kandarpa, Cupid, தவ your, பார்ஷ்வத: side, ஸ்தாஸ்யாமி will stay.
'O Rambha! have no fear. Feel safe. Carry out my order. When the trees look so beautiful in spring I shall in captivating the form of a cuckoo, stay by your side in the company of Kamadeva (Cupid).
த்வஂ ஹி ரூபஂ பஹுகுணஂ கரித்வா பரமபாஸ்வரம்.
தமரிஷிஂ கௌஷிகஂ ரம்பே பேதயஸ்வ தபஸ்விநம்৷৷1.64.7৷৷

ரம்பே O! Rambha, த்வம் you, பஹுகுணம் displaying many romantic gestures, பரமபாஸ்வரம் highly shining, ரூபம் form, கரித்வா having assumed, தபஸ்விநம் mighty ascestic, தம் றஷிம் that rishi, கௌஷிகம் Visvamitra, பேதயஸ்வ break him (from penance).
O Rambha! displaying many (romantic) gestures and assuming a fascinating form, distract the mighty ascetic, Kausika (Viswamitra)'.
ஸா ஷ்ருத்வா வசநஂ தஸ்ய கரித்வா ரூபமநுத்தமம்.
லோபயாமாஸ லலிதா விஷ்வாமித்ரஂ ஷுசிஸ்மிதா৷৷1.64.8৷৷

ஸா she, தஸ்ய his, வசநம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having listened, அநுத்தமம் highly excellent, ரூபம் form, கரித்வா having asumed, லலிதா beautiful, ஷுசிஸ்மிதா with bright smile, விஷ்வாமித்ரம் Visvamitra, லோபயாமாஸ allured.
At these words (of Indra), Rambha, assumed any form of excellent beauty and with a bright smile set out to allure Viswamitra.
கோகிலஸ்ய ச ஷுஷ்ராவ வல்கு வ்யாஹரத: ஸ்வநம்.
ஸம்ப்ரஹரிஷ்டேந மநஸா தத ஏநாமுதைக்ஷத৷৷1.64.9৷৷

வல்கு sweet, charming, வ்யாஹரத: making notes, கோகிலஸ்ய cuckoo's, ஸ்வநம் voice of, ஷுஷ்ராவ heard, தத: afterwards, ஸம்ப்ரஹரிஷ்டேந with a delighted, மநஸா mind, ஏநாம் her, உதைக்ஷத beheld.
Excited by the charming warble of the cuckoo, Viswamitra opened his eyes.
அத தஸ்ய ச ஷப்தேந கீதேநாப்ரதிமேந ச.
தர்ஷநேந ச ரம்பாயா முநிஸ்ஸந்தேஹமாகத:৷৷1.64.10৷৷
தர்ஷநேந ச ரம்பாயா முநிஸ்ஸந்தேஹமாகத:৷৷1.64.10৷৷
அத afterwards, தஸ்ய that cuckoo's, ஷப்தேந sounds, அப்ரதிமேந incomparable, கீதேந song, ரம்பாயா: with the Rambha's, தர்ஷநேந ச presence also, முநி: the ascetic, ஸந்தேஹம் doubt, ஆகத: arose.
On hearing the sound of the incomparable song of the cuckoo along with the sight of Rambha, a doubt arose in the mind of the ascetic.
ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷஸ்ய தத்கர்ம விஜ்ஞாய முநிபுங்கவ:.
ரம்பாஂ க்ரோதஸமாவிஷ்ட ஷ்ஷஷாப குஷிகாத்மஜ:৷৷1.64.11৷৷

முநிபுங்கவ: eminent ascetic, குஷிகாத்மஜ: son of Kusika, ஸஹஸ்ராக்ஷஸ்ய Indra's, தத் that one, கர்ம work, விஜ்ஞாய having recognised, க்ரோதஸமாவிஷ்ட: seized of anger, ரம்பாம் Rambha, ஷஷாப cursed.
Son of Kushika, the eminent ascetic knew it was the work of Indra. Seized with anger,
he cursed Rambha:
யந்மாஂ லோபயஸே ரம்பே காமக்ரோதஜயைஷிணம்.
தஷவர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ஷைலீ ஸ்தாஸ்யஸி துர்பகே ৷৷1.64.12৷৷
தஷவர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ஷைலீ ஸ்தாஸ்யஸி துர்பகே ৷৷1.64.12৷৷
துர்பகே O! Unfortunate one, ரம்பே Rambha, காமக்ரோதஜயைஷிணம் with a desire to conquer wrath and passion, மாம் me, யத் since, லோபயஸே seduce me (for that reason), தஷ வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ராணி ten thousand years, ஷைலீ as rock, ஸ்தாஸ்யஸி shall become.
'O luckless Rambha, since you have endeavoured to distract me from my desire to conquer wrath and passion, you shall turn into a rock and remain so for ten thousand years'.
ப்ராஹ்மண ஸ்ஸுமஹாதேஜா ஸ்தபோபலஸமந்வித:.
உத்தரிஷ்யதி ரம்பே த்வாஂ மத்க்ரோதகலுஷீகரிதாம்৷৷1.64.13৷৷
உத்தரிஷ்யதி ரம்பே த்வாஂ மத்க்ரோதகலுஷீகரிதாம்৷৷1.64.13৷৷
ரம்பே O! Rambha, ஸுமஹாதேஜா: highly splendrous, தபோபலஸமந்வித: endowed with the power of asceticism, ப்ராஹ்மண: Brahmana, மத்க்ரோதகலுஷீகரிதாம் fouled on account of my anger, த்வாம் you, உத்தரிஷ்யதி will liberate.
'O Rambha! an effulgent brahmin, endowed with the power of asceticism, will liberate you from this state into which you have fallen on account of my anger'.
ஏவமுக்த்வா மஹாதேஜா விஷ்வாமித்ரோ மஹாமுநி:.
அஷக்நுவந் தாரயிதுஂ க்ரோதஂ ஸந்தாபமாகத:৷৷1.64.14৷৷
அஷக்நுவந் தாரயிதுஂ க்ரோதஂ ஸந்தாபமாகத:৷৷1.64.14৷৷
மஹாதேஜா: exceedingly lustrous, மஹாமுநி: great sage, விஷ்வாமித்ர: Visvamitra, க்ரோதம் anger, தாரயிதும் to contain, அஷக்நுவந் unable, ஏவம் thus, உக்த்வா having spoken, ஸந்தாபம் distress, ஆகத: experienced.
The brilliant Viswamitra, the great ascetic, now experienced remorse for his inability to contain anger.
தஸ்ய ஷாபேந மஹதா ரம்பா ஷைலீ ததாபவத்.
வசஷ்ஷரித்வா ச கந்தர்போ மஹர்ஷேஸ்ஸ ச நிர்கத:৷৷1.64.15৷৷
வசஷ்ஷரித்வா ச கந்தர்போ மஹர்ஷேஸ்ஸ ச நிர்கத:৷৷1.64.15৷৷
ததா then, தஸ்ய his மஹதா by great, ஷாபேந (because of )curse, ரம்பா Rambha, ஷைலீ அபவத் became a rock, மஹர்ஷே: maharshi's, வச: words, ஷ்ருத்வா having listened, கந்தர்ப: Kandarapa, ஸ: ச devendra, நிர்கத: fled away.
This mighty curse, of the great saint transformed Rambha into a rock and sent Kamadeva and Indra to their heels.
கோபேந ஸ மஹாதேஜாஸ்தபோபஹரணே கரிதே.
இந்த்ரியைரஜிதை ராம! ந லேபே ஷாந்திமாத்மந:৷৷1.64.16৷৷

ராம O! Rama, மஹாதேஜா: highly powerful, ஸ: Visvamitra, கோபேந with anger, தபோபஹரணே in deprivation of his ascetic merit, கரிதே having been made, அஜிதை: with unconquered, இந்த்ரியை: senses, ஆத்மந: his own, ஷாந்திம் peace, ந லேபே did not get.
"O Rama! highly powerful Viswamitra was deprived of his ascetic merit due to his
anger. He had no peace of mind for his inability to control his senses.
பபூவாஸ்ய மநஷ்சிந்தா தபோபஹரணே கரிதே .
நைவ க்ரோதஂ கமிஷ்யாமி ந ச வக்ஷ்யே கதஞ்சந৷৷1.64.17৷৷
நைவ க்ரோதஂ கமிஷ்யாமி ந ச வக்ஷ்யே கதஞ்சந৷৷1.64.17৷৷
தபோபஹரணே கரிதே having been deprived of his ascetic merit, அஸ்ய for him, மநஷ்சிந்தா பபூவ thought arose in his mind, க்ரோதம் anger, நைவ கமிஷ்யாமி never shall I obtain, கதஞ்சந in what so ever manner, ந ச வக்ஷ்யே I shall not speak also.
Having been deprived of his ascetic merit, he resolved not to lose his temper nor ever breathe a word".
அதவா நோச்சவஸிஷ்யாமி ஸஂவத்ஸரஷதாந்யபி.
அஹஂ விஷோஷயிஷ்யாமி ஹ்யாத்மாநஂ விஜிதேந்த்ரிய:৷৷1.64.18৷৷
அஹஂ விஷோஷயிஷ்யாமி ஹ்யாத்மாநஂ விஜிதேந்த்ரிய:৷৷1.64.18৷৷
அதவா further, ஸஂவத்ஸரஷதாந்யபி even for hundreds of years, நோச்சவஸிஷ்யாமி I shall not breathe, அஹம் I, விஜிதேந்த்ரிய: having conquered my senses, ஆத்மாநம் this body, விஷோஷயிஷ்யாமி will emaciate.
"Further, I shall not even inhale for hundreds of years. I shall conquer my senses and dry up this body.
தாவத்யாவத்தி மே ப்ராப்தஂ ப்ராஹ்மண்யஂ தபஸார்ஜிதம்.
அநுச்சவஸந்நபுஞ்ஜாந ஸ்திஷ்டேயஂ ஷாஷ்வதீஸ்ஸமா:৷৷1.64.19৷৷
ந ஹி மே தப்யமாநஸ்ய க்ஷயஂ யாஸ்யந்தி மூர்தய:.
அநுச்சவஸந்நபுஞ்ஜாந ஸ்திஷ்டேயஂ ஷாஷ்வதீஸ்ஸமா:৷৷1.64.19৷৷
ந ஹி மே தப்யமாநஸ்ய க்ஷயஂ யாஸ்யந்தி மூர்தய:.
மே for me, தபஸா by austerities, ஆர்ஜிதம் earned, ப்ராஹ்மண்யம் brahminhood, யாவத் until, ப்ரப்தம் is obtained, தாவத் till then, அநுச்சவஸந் suspending my breath, அபுஞ்ஜாந: abstaining from food, ஷாஷ்வதீ: ஸமா: for innumerable years, திஷ்டேயம் I shall stay, தப்யமாநஸய while performing austerities, மே my, மூர்தய: limbs, க்ஷயம் deterioration, ந யாஸ்யந்தி will not get.
Until brahminhood is obtained by my austerities, I shall stay without breathing or eating for innumerable years. While performing penance, my limbs shall not undergo deterioration".
ஏவஂ வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய தீக்ஷாஂ ஸ முநிபுங்கவ:৷৷1.64.20৷৷
சகாராப்ரதிமாஂ லோகே ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாஂ ரகுநந்தந!.
சகாராப்ரதிமாஂ லோகே ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாஂ ரகுநந்தந!.
ரகுநந்தந! O! Rama, ஸ: முநிபுங்கவ: that eminent ascetic, ஏவம் in this way, லோகே in this world, அப்ரதிமாம் unparalleled, வர்ஷஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய தீக்ஷாம் religious practices for a thousand years, ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாஂ vow, சகார made.
"O Descendant of Raghu! in this way that eminent ascetic took an unprecedented vow to practise penance for a thousand years".
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே சதுஷ்ஷஷ்டிதமஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
