[Satananda completes his narration of how Viswamitra attains Brahmarshi status.]

atha haimavatīṅ rāma diśaṅ tyaktvā mahāmuni:.

pūrvāṅ diśamanuprāpya tapastēpē sudāruṇam৷৷1.65.1৷৷


rāma O! Rama, atha thereafter, mahāmuni: great ascetic Visvamitra, haimavatīm relating to Himavat mountain, diśam quarter, tyaktvā abandoning, pūrvāṅ diśam eastern quarter, anuprāpya having reached, sudāruṇam rigorous, tapa: austerities, tēpē performed.

"O Rama! thereafter the great ascetic (Viswamitra), abandoning the north of the Himavat mountain reached the eastern quarter and performed rigorous austerities.
maunaṅ varṣasahasrasya kṛtvā vratamanuttamam.

cakārāpratimaṅ rāma tapa: paramaduṣkaram৷৷1.65.2৷৷


rāma O! Rama, varṣasahasrasya for a thousand years, anuttamam immense, maunaṅ vrataṅ vow of silence, kṛtvā having observed, apratimam unprecedented, paramaduṣkaram extremely difficult, tapa: austerities, cakāra practised.

Having observed a unique vow of silence for a thousand years, O Rama! he practised unprecedented and extremely difficult austerities.
pūrṇē varṣasahasrē tu kāṣṭhabhūtaṅ mahāmunim.

vighnairbahubhirādhūtaṅ krōdhō nāntara āviśat৷৷1.65.3৷৷

sa kṛtvā niścayaṅ rāma tapa ātiṣṭadavyayam.


varṣasahasrē when thousand years, pūrṇē were completed, kāṣṭhabhūtam almost like a piece of wood, mahāmunim mighty ascetic, bahubhi: several, vighnai: with impediments, ādhūtam unshaken, krōdha: anger, antarē in his mind, na āviśat did not enter, rāma O! Rama, sa: he, niścayam determination, kṛtvā having made, avyayam immense, tapa: austerities, ātiṣṭhat practised.

After completion of a thousand years the great ascetic became a piece of wood. In spite of many impediments, he was unshaken, anger did not enter into his mind. O Rama! with firm determination he practised austerities.
tasya varṣasahasrasya vratē pūrṇē mahāvrata:৷৷1.65.4৷৷

bhōktumārabdhavānannaṅ tasmin kālē raghūttama!.

indrō dvijātirbhūtvā taṅ siddhamannamayācata৷৷1.65.5৷৷


raghūttama O! Rama, tasya for him, varṣasahasrasya of a thousand years, vratē when the vow, pūrṇē had been completed, mahāvrata: one rigidly observing vows, annam cooked rice, bhōktum to partake, ārabdhavān commenced, tasmin kālē that moment, indra: Indra, dvijāti: bhūtvā assuming the guise of a brahmin, tam him, siddham cooked and set ready for consumption, annam rice, ayācata asked.

O Best of Raghus dynasty (Rama)! when the thousand-year-old vow was over (Viswamitra) the great practitioner of vows began to partake cooked rice. At this moment Indra assumed the guise of a brahmin and asked him for the rice (he was going to eat).
tasmai datvā tadā siddhaṅ sarvaṅ viprāya niścita:.

niśśēṣitē.nnē bhagavānabhuktaiva mahātapā:৷৷1.65.6৷৷

na kiñcidavadadvipraṅ maunavratamupasthita:.

atha varṣasahasraṅ vai nōcchvasanmunipuṅgava:৷৷1.65.7৷৷


bhagavān adorable, mahātapā: mighty ascetic, maunavratam vow of silence, upāsthita: having adopted, niścita: firmly determined, tadā then, siddham kept ready, sarvam all that rice, tasmai viprāya for that Brahmin, datvā having given, annē when the cooked rice, niśśēṣitē without remainder was consumed, abhuktaiva without eating food, vipram brahmin, kiñcit little, na avadat did not utter a word, atha thereafter, munipuṅgava: best of ascetics, varṣasahasraṅ thousand years, nōcchvasat did not breathe.

This mighty, adorable ascetic having adopted a vow of silence decided to give all the cooked rice to the Brahmin. The brahmin finished all the rice. Viswamitra went without food but did not utter a single word to the brahmin. Thereafter the distinguished ascetic practised austerities for another period of thousand years, his breath suspended.
tasyānucchvasamānasya mūrdhni dhūmō vyajāyata.

trailōkyaṅ yēna sambhrāntamādīpitamivābhavat৷৷1.65.8৷৷


anucchvasamānasya while he was suspending his breath, tasya Visvamitra's, mūrdhni on his head, dhūma: smoke, vyajāyata emanated, yēna by which, trailōkyam three worlds, sambhrāntam agitated, ādīpitamiva abhavat was as thoughset on fire.

While his breath, was suspended, smoke emanated from his head which frightened the three worlds. It appeared as though they were on fire.
tatō dēvāssagandharvā: pannagōragarākṣasā:.

mōhitāstējasā tasya tapasā mandaraśmaya:৷৷1.65.9৷৷

kaśmalōpahatā ssarvē pitāmahamathābruvan.


tata: thereupon, dēvā: devatas, sagandharvā: along with gandharvas, pannagōragararākṣasā: pannagas, uragas, rakshasas, tasya his, tējasā by ascetic energy, mōhitā: bewildered, tapasā by his penance, mandaraśmaya: with dimmed glory, kaśmalōpahatā: afflicted with anguish, atha thereafter, sarvē all, pitāmaham addressing grand-sire, abruvan spoke.

Thereupon devatas along with gandharvas, pannagas, uragas, and rakshasas, stood bewildered by his ascetic energy. Their own glory was dimmed in his lustre". Afflicted with anguish, they spoke to the Grandsire (Brahma):
bahubhi: kāraṇairdēva viśvāmitrō mahāmuni:৷৷1.65.10৷৷

lōbhita: krōdhitaścaiva tapasā cābhivardhatē.


dēva O! Divine lord, mahāmuni: great ascetic, viśvāmitra: Visvamitra, bahubhi: with various, kāraṇai: by reasons, lōbhita: having been lured, krōdhitaścaiva having been angered, tapasā with his austerities, abhivardhatē is growing:

"O Lord! the great sage Viswamitra was lured and angered in various ways. But his austerities continued to grow:
na hyasya vṛjinaṅ kiñciddṛśyatē sūkṣmamapyatha৷৷1.65.11৷৷

na dīyatē yadi tvasya manasā yadabhīpsitam.

vināśayati trailōkyaṅ tapasā sacarācaram৷৷1.65.12৷৷


atha also, asya his, sūkṣmamapi even minute, vṛjinam sin, kiñcit a little, na dṛśyatē not to be seen, asya his, manasā by mind, yat which, abhīpsitam is desired, na dīyatē yadi if not given, tapasā with his austerities, sacarācaram moveable and immoveable, trailōkyam the three worlds together, vināśayati will destroy.

His penance was flawless. If his wishes were not granted, he will surely destroy by his austerities the three worlds with all movables and immovables.
vyākulāśca diśassarvā na ca kiñcitprakāśatē.

sāgarā: kṣubhitāssarvē viśīryantē ca parvatā:৷৷1.65.13৷৷


sarvā: all, diśa: quarters, vyākulā: bewildered, kiñcit even a little, na prakāśatē is not shining, sarvē all, sāgarā: seas, kṣubhitā: are agitated, parvatā: mountains, viśīryantē are riven.

There is bewilderment everywhere. It is dark all over. The oceans are disturbed. The mountains have cracked.
prakampatē ca pṛthivī vāyurvāti bhṛśākula:.

bṛhmanna pratijānīmōnāstikō jāyatē jana:৷৷1.65.14৷৷


brahman O! Brahma, pṛthivī earth, prakampatē is trembling, vāyu: wind, bhṛśākula: is excessively affected, vāti is blowing, na pratijānīma: we do not know what to do, jana: men, nāstika: atheist, jāyatē are becoming.

O Brahma! the earth trembles. The wind blows fiercely. The people have ceased to believe in God. We do not know the way out.
sammūḍhamiva trailōkyaṅ samprakṣubhitamānasam.

bhāskarō niṣprabhaścaiva maharṣēstasya tējasā৷৷1.65.15৷৷


trailōkyam three worlds put together, samprakṣubhitamānasam with agitated minds, sammūḍhamiva looking as though fainted, tasya maharṣē: by that maharshi's, tējasā lustre, bhāskaraśca even Sun also, niṣprabha: is devoid of brilliance.

The people of all the three worlds are agitated and confused in mind. The Sun, too, looks pale before the brilliance of the Maharshi.
buddhiṅ na kurutē yāvannāśē dēva! mahāmuni:.

tāvatprasādyō bhagavā nagnirūpōmahādyuti:৷৷1.65.16৷৷


dēva! O! Lord, mahāmuni: the mighty ascetic, nāśē in destruction, yāvat until, buddhim mind, na kurutē does not make, tāvat till then, agnirūpa: resembling fire, mahādyuti: highly effulgent, bhagavān venerable, Visvamitra, prasādya: should be appeased.

O Lord! before this mighty, venerable ascetic, effulgent like fire decides to destroy the three worlds, he should be appeased.
kālāgninā yathāpūrvaṅ trailōkyaṅ dahyatē.khilam.

dēvarājyaṅ cikīrṣēta dīyatāmasya yanmatam৷৷1.65.17৷৷


akhilam entire, trailōkyam three worlds, pūrvam formerly, kālāgninā by fire at the dissolution of worlds, yathā in that manner, dahyatē is burnt, dēvarājyam kingdom of devatas, cikīrṣēta if he wants to rule, asya for him, yat which, matam likes, dīyatām be given.

All the three worlds are burning as though with the fire Pralaya (dissolution). His desire may be granted even if he wants to rule the kingdom of the gods.
tatassuragaṇāssarvē pitāmahapurōgamā:.

viśvāmitraṅ mahātmānaṅ madhuraṅ vākyamabruvan৷৷1.65.18৷৷


tata: thereafter, pitāmahapurōgamā: with Brahma in the forefront, sarvē suragaṇā: hosts of devatas, mahātmānam magnanimous, viśvāmitram Visvamitra, madhuram sweet, vākyam words, abruvan spoke.

Thereafter, with Brahma in the forefront, the gods spoke to Viswamitra in pleasing words:
brahmarṣē svāgataṅ tē.stu tapasā sma sutōṣitā:.

brāhmaṇyaṅ tapasōgrēṇa prāptavānasi kauśika !৷৷1.65.19৷৷


brahmarṣē O! Brahmarshi, tē to you, svāgatam welcome, tapasā with your austerities, sutōṣitā: sma: we are immensely pleased, kauśika O! Viswmitra!, ugrēṇa by intense, tapasā austerities, brāhmaṇyam brahminhood, prāptavān asi you have attained.

"Welcome, O Brahmarshi. We are immensely pleased with your austerities. O Kausika! you have attained brahminhood by means of your intense penance.
dīrghamāyuśca tē brahman dadāmi samarudgaṇa:.

svasti prāpnuhi bhadraṅ tē gaccha saumya yathāsukham৷৷1.65.20৷৷


brahman O! Brahmana, samarudgaṇa: I, together with hosts of maruts, tē to you, dīrgham long, āyuśca life, dadāmi am giving, svasti well-being, tē bhadram prosperity to you, prāpnuhi you may obtain, saumya O! Gentle one, yathā sukham happily, gaccha go.

O Brahmana! I along with the maruts grant you long life. May you prosper! O Gentle one! now you may go happily".
pitāmahavacaśśṛtvā sarvēṣāṅ ca divaukasām.

kṛtvā praṇāmaṅ muditō vyājahāra mahāmuni:৷৷1.65.21৷৷


mahāmuni: mighty ascetic, pitāmaha vaca: words of grand- sire, sarvēṣām all, divaukasāmca words of devatas, śrutvā having heard, mudita: delighted, praṇāmam obeisance, kṛtvā having made, vyājahāra spoke.

Mighty ascetic Viswamitra was delighted to hear the words of the Grandsire and the gods. Bowing to all of them he thus spoke:
brāhmaṇyaṅ yadi mē prāptaṅ dīrghamāyustathaiva ca.

ōṅkāraśca vaṣaṭkārō vēdāśca varayantu mām৷৷1.65.22৷৷


mē for me, brāhmaṇyam brahminhood, prāptam yadi if acquired, tathaiva ca and similarly, dīrgham long, āyuśca life, ōṅkāraśca Omkara, vaṣaṭkāraśca Vashatkara, vēdāśca vedas, mām me, varayantu accept.

"If brahminhood and long life have been acquired by me by your grace, Omkara, Vashatkara and the Vedas shall accept me as Brahmarshi. (I shall acquire the right to interpret the Vedas and to perform sacrifices.)
kṣatravēdavidāṅ śrēṣṭhō brahmavēdavidāmapi.

brahmaputrō vasiṣṭhō māmēvaṅ vadatu dēvatā:!৷৷1.65.23৷৷

yadyayaṅ parama: kāma: kṛtō yāntu surarṣabhā:.


dēvatā: O! devatas, kṣatravēdavidām knowledgeable in vedas worthy of kshatriyas like archery, etc, brahmavēdavidāmapi knowledgeable in vedas worthy to brahmins, śrēṣṭha: eminent, brahmaputra: son of Brahma, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, mām me, ēvam thus, vadatu speak, ayam this, parama: supreme, kāma: desire, kṛta:yadi if done, surarṣabhā: best of devatas, yāntu you can go.

"O gods! let the son of Brahma and eminent Vasishta who is knowledgeable in the vedas worthy of brahmins and archery worthy of kshatriyas address me as 'Brahmarshi'. If this supreme desire is granted, O Best of devatas! all of you can go".
tata: prasāditō dēvairvasiṣṭhō japatāṅ vara:৷৷1.65.24৷৷

sakhyaṅ cakāra brahmarṣirēvamastviti cābravīt.


tata: there upon, dēvai: by devatas, prasādita: propitiated, japatāṅ vara: the best among ascetics, vasiṣṭha: Vasishta, sakhyam friendship, cakāra made, ēvam thus, brahmarṣi: astu become brahmarshi, iti in this manner saying so, abravīt ca spoken.

Thereupon, pleased by the gods, Vasishta, the best among ascetics, lovingly said to Viswamitra "You are a Brahmarshi, let it be so".
brahmarṣistvaṅ na sandēhassarvaṅ sampatsyatē tava৷৷1.65.25৷৷

ityuktvā dēvatāścāpi sarvā jagmuryathāgatam.


tvam you, brahmarṣi: are a Brahmarshi, sandēha: na no doubt, tava to you,sarvam all, sampatsyatē will be achieved (ascetic perfection), iti so, uktvā having said, sarvā: all, dēvatā: devatas, yathāgatam where they had come from, jagmu: went away.

"You are a Brahmarshi, no doubt. You will achieve ascetic perfection", said the gods
and returned to their respective places from where they had come.
viśvāmitrō.pi dharmātmā labdhvā brāhmaṇyamuttamam৷৷1.65.26৷৷

pūjayāmāsa brahmarṣiṅ vasiṣṭhaṅ japatāṅ varam.


dharmātmā virtuous, viśvāmitra: api Visvamitra also, uttamam excellent, brahmaṇyam brahminhood, labdhvā having attained, brahmarṣim brahmrshi, japatām varam the best of those who recite prayers, vasiṣṭham Vasishta, pūjayāmāsa worshipped.

Virtuous Viswamitra also, having attained excellent brahminhood, worshipped Brahmrshi Vasishta who was the best of those who recite hymns".
kṛtakāmō mahīṅ sarvāṅ cacāra tapasi sthita:৷৷1.65.27৷৷

ēvaṅ tvanēna brāhmaṇyaṅ prāptaṅ rāma mahātmanā.


kṛtakāma: having fulfilled his desire, tapasi in asceticism, sthita: fixed, sarvām whole, mahīm earth, cacāra wandered, rāma O! Rama, mahātmanā by illustrious, anēna by him, ēvam thus, brāhmaṇyam brahminhood, prāptam was acquired.

This illustrious sage having fulfilled his desire, wandered over the earth fixed in asceticism. O Rama! thus he acquired brahminhood.
ēṣa rāma muniśrēṣṭha ēṣa vigrahavāṅstapa:৷৷1.65.28৷৷

ēṣa dharmaparō nityaṅ vīryasyaiṣa parāyaṇam.


rāma O! Rama, ēṣa: he, muniśrēṣṭha: is the foremost of ascetics, ēṣa: he, vigrahavān embodiment of, tapa: asceticism, ēṣa: he, nityam always, dharmapara: intent on virtuous means, ēṣa: he, vīryasya for ascetic energy, parāyaṇam the goal (or the supreme goal).

O Rama! he is the foremost of ascetics, an embodiment of asceticism, always intent on virtue. He is the ultimate repository of ascetic energy".
ēvamuktvā mahātējā virarāma dvijōttama:৷৷1.65.29৷৷

śatānandavaca: śrutvā rāmalakṣmaṇasannidhau.

janaka: prāñjalirvākyamuvāca kuśikātmajam৷৷1.65.30৷৷


mahātējā: most brilliant, dvijōttama: excellent among brahmins, ēvam thus, uktvā having spoken, virarāma became silent, janaka: Janaka, rāmalakṣmaṇasannidhau in the presence of Rama and Lakshmana, śatānanda vaca: words of Sadananda, śṛtvā having listened, prāñjali: with folded palms, kuśikātmajam son of Kusika, vākyam these words, uvāca spoke.

Having thus spoken, the most brilliant and best among brahmins (Satananda) became silent. In the presence of Rama and Lakshmana, Janaka listened to the words of Satananda. And with folded palms said to the son of Kushika (Viswamitra):
dhanyō.smyanugṛhītō.smi yasya mē munipuṅgava!.

yajñaṅ kākutsthasahita: prāptavānasi dhārmika!৷৷1.65.31৷৷


dharmika! O! Righteous one, munipuṅgava! O! Pre-eminent among ascetics, kākutsthasahita: accompanied by Rama and Lakshmana, yasya mē for my, yajñam sacrifice, praptavān asi you have arrived, dhanya: asmi blessed I am, anugṛhīta: asmi I am greatly favoured.

"O Righteous one! O Pre-eminent among ascetics! you have come to my sacrifice accompanied by the descendants of Kakustha (Rama and Lakshmana). I am blessed by your presence and am highly favoured.
pāvitō.haṅ tvayā brahman darśanēna mahāmunē!.

guṇā bahuvidhā: prāptāstava sandarśanānmayā৷৷1.65.32৷৷


mahāmunē O! Excellent ascetic, brahman O! Brahman, tvayā by you, darśanēna with presence, aham I, pāvita: sanctified, tava your, sandarśanāt from your visit, mayā by me, bahuvidhā: various, guṇā: qualities, prāptā: are obtained.

O Excellent ascetic! O Brahmana! I am sanctified with your presence. I have derived immense benefits from your visit.
vistarēṇa ca tē brahman kīrtyamānaṅ mahattapa:.

śrutaṅ mayā mahātējō rāmēṇa ca mahātmanā৷৷1.65.33৷৷


mahātēja: O! Highly powerful, brahman Brahmarshi, vistarēṇa in detail, kīrtyamānam being related, tē your, mahat great, tapa: austerities, mayā by me, mahātmanā distinguished, rāmēṇa ca Rama, śrutam has been heard.

O powerful Brahmarshi! distinguished Rama and I have heard your great austerities which were related in detail (by Satananda).
sadasyai: prāpya ca sada: śrutāstē bahavō guṇā:.

apramēyaṅ tapastubhyamapramēyaṅ ca tē balam৷৷1.65.34৷৷

apramēyā guṇāścaiva nityaṅ tē kuśikātmaja !.


sadasyai: by members of the assembly, sada: sacrifice, prāpya having reached, tē your, bahava: many, guṇā: virtues, śrutā: have been heard, tubhyam for you, tapa: austerities, apramēyam immeasurable, tē your, balam power, apramēyam immeasurable, kuśikātmaja! O! son of Kusika, Visvamitra, tē your, guṇa: ca ēva virtues also, nityam always, apramēyā: immeasurable.

Many of your virtues have been heard by the members of the assembly present at the sacrifice. Your austerities are immeasurable, your power is immense. O Son of Kushika! (Viswamitra), your virtues cannot be measured.
tṛptirāścaryabhūtānāṅ kathānāṅ nāsti mē vibhō!৷৷1.65.35৷৷

karmakālō muniśrēṣṭha lambatē ravimaṇḍalam.


vibhō: O! Lord, āścaryabhūtānām forming wonders, kathānām pertaining to the deeds, mē to me, tṛpti: satisfaction, nāsti is not there, muniśrēṣṭha O! Excellent of ascetics, ravimaṇḍalam the halo around the Sun, lambatē is hanging down, karmakāla: (It is time for) evening ablutions.

O Lord! I am never tired of listening to your marvellous deeds. O Excellent among ascetics! the Sun has set and it is time for evening prayers.
śva: prabhātē mahātējō draṣṭumarhasi māṅ puna:৷৷1.65.36৷৷

svāgataṅ tapatāṅ śrēṣṭha! māmanujñātumarhasi.


mahātēja: O! Sage possessing great austerities, śva: to-morrow, prabhātē at dawn, mām me, puna: again, draṣṭum to see, arhasi behoves of you, tapatām in reciting religious prayers, śrēṣṭha! excellent one, svāgatam welcome, mām to me, anujñātum arhasi give me your consent to leave.

O Sage of great austerities! come to me tomorrow at dawn. O Excellent ascetic welcome! And allow me to leave".
ēvamuktō munivara: praśasya puruṣarṣabham৷৷1.65.37৷৷

visasarjāśu janakaṅ prītaṅ prītamanāstadā.


tadā then, ēvam thus, ukta: spoken, munivara: excellent ascetic, prītamanā: with pleased mind, prītam to the gratified man, puruṣarṣabham the best among men, janakam Janaka, praśasya having extolled, āśu immediately, visasarja left.

Thus addressed (by the king), the gratified ascetic extolled the best among men (Janaka) and permitted him to leave immediately.
ēvamuktvā muniśrēṣṭhaṅ vaidēhō mithilādhipa:৷৷1.65.38৷৷

pradakṣiṇaṅ cakārāśu sōpādhyāyassabāndhava:.


vaidēha: king of Videha, mithilāthipa: lord of city of Mithila, muniśrēṣṭham that excellent ascetic, ēvam in this manner, uktvā having spoken, sōpādhyāya: accompanied by his spiritual preceptors, sabāndhava: with relatives, āśu immediately, pradakṣiṇaṅ cakāra performed circumambulation.

Having thus addressed the greatest sage, king of Videha, Lord of the city of Mithila (Janaka) accompanied by his king and spiritual preceptors circumambulated Viswamitra without delay.
viśvāmitrō.pi dharmātmā saharāmassalakṣmaṇa:৷৷1.65.39৷৷

svavāṭamabhicakrāma pūjyamānō maharṣibhi:.


dharmātmā virtuous, viśvāmitrō.pi Visvamitra also, saharāma: together with Rama, salakṣmaṇa: with Lakshmana, maharṣibhi: along with maharshis, pūjyamāna: having ben honoured, svavāṭam towards his abode, abhicakrāma started.

Virtuous Viswamitra, honoured by the maharshis, too, retired to his shelter along with Rama and Lakshmana.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē pañcaṣaṣṭitamassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyfifth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
