[ After receiving the message from Janaka, king Dasaratha accompanied by his ministers arrives at Mithila.]

ಜನಕೇನ ಸಮಾದಿಷ್ಟಾ ದೂತಾಸ್ತೇ ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತವಾಹನಾ:.

ತ್ರಿರಾತ್ರಮುಷಿತಾ ಮಾರ್ಗೇ ತೇಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಾವಿಶನ್ ಪುರೀಮ್৷৷1.68.1৷৷

ಜನಕೇನ by Janaka, ಸಮಾದಿಷ್ಟಾ: commanded by, ತೇ they, ದೂತಾ: messengers, ಮಾರ್ಗೇ on the way, ತ್ರಿರಾತ್ರಮ್ three nights, ಉಷಿತಾಃ had spent, ಕ್ಲಾನ್ತವಾಹನಾ: with their horses tired, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪುರೀಮ್ city of Ayodhya, ಪ್ರಾವಿಶನ್ entered.

Commanded by Janaka the messengers travelled for three days, rested for three nights on the way and entered the city of Ayodhya along with their horses tired.

ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ಭವನಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ದ್ವಾರಸ್ಥಾನಿದಮಬ್ರುವನ್.

ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ನಿವೇದ್ಯತಾಂ ರಾಜ್ಞೇ ದೂತಾನ್ನೋ ಜನಕಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷1.68.2৷৷

ರಾಜ್ಞ: king's, ಭವನಮ್ palace, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ದ್ವಾರಸ್ಥಾನ್ addressing the door-keepers, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರುವನ್ spoke, ಜನಕಸ್ಯ Janaka's, ದೂತಾನ್ messengers, ನ: about us, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ immediately, ರಾಜ್ಞೇ for king, ನಿವೇದ್ಯತಾಮ್ be informed.

Reaching the king's palace the messengers said to the door-keepers, "Let king
Dasaratha be immediately informed that the messengers from Janaka have come".

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ದ್ವಾರಪಾಲಾಸ್ತೇ ರಾಘವಾಯ ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್.

ತೇ ರಾಜವಚನಾದ್ದೂತಾ ರಾಜವೇಶ್ಮಪ್ರವೇಶಿತಾ:.

ದದೃಶುರ್ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಂ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್৷৷1.68.3৷৷

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾಃ having (informed) spoken by them, ದ್ವಾರಪಾಲಾ: door-keepers, ರಾಘವಾಯ for Dasaratha, ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ informed, ತೇ ದೂತಾ: those messengers, ರಾಜವಚನಾತ್ obeying the words of king, ರಾಜವೇಶ್ಮ royal palace, ಪ್ರವೇಶಿತಾ: having been made to enter, ದೇವಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling devatas, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ aged, ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್ king Dasaratha, ದದೃಶು: beheld.

Having heard their words, the door-keepers informed the descendant of Raghu (king Dasaratha). Thereafter, with the the king's permission, the messengers entered the royal palace and beheld the aged king Dasaratha who shone like a god.

ಬದ್ಧಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ದೂತಾ ವಿಗತಸಾಧ್ವಸಾ:.

ರಾಜಾನಂ ಪ್ರಯತಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರುವನ್ಮಧುರಾಕ್ಷರಮ್৷৷1.68.4৷৷

ಸರ್ವೇ all, ದೂತಾ: the messengers, ಬದ್ಧಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ: folding the hands together in supplication, ವಿಗತಸಾಧ್ವಸಾ: freed from apprehensions, ಪ್ರಯತಾ: in reverence, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ addressing king, ಮಧುರಾಕ್ಷರಮ್ in sweet (complimentary ), ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರುವನ್ said:

All the messengers, hands folded free from apprehensions, reverentially addressed the king in sweet words.

ಮೈಥಿಲೋ ಜನಕೋ ರಾಜಾ ಸಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಪುರಸ್ಕೃತಮ್ .

ಕುಶಲಂ ಚಾವ್ಯಯಂ ಚೈವ ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್৷৷1.68.5৷৷

ಮುಹುರ್ಮುಹುರ್ಮಧುರಯಾ ಸ್ನೇಹಸಂಯುಕ್ತಯಾ ಗಿರಾ.

ಜನಕಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಪೃಚ್ಛತೇ ಸಪುರಸ್ಸರಮ್৷৷1.68.6৷৷

ಮಹಾರಾಜ O! Great monarch, ಮೈಥಿಲ: Mithila's lord, ಜನಕ: ರಾಜಾ king Janaka, ಸಾಗ್ನಿಹೋತ್ರಪುರಸ್ಕೃತಮ್ treating with sacred fire and oblations with resepect by placing the sacred fire in the fore-front, ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ with spiritual preceptors and priests, ಸಪುರಸ್ಸರಮ್ with attendants ahead of you, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಮಧುರಯಾ sweet, ಸ್ನೇಹಸಂಯುಕ್ತಯಾ endowed with affection, ಗಿರಾ with words, ಕುಶಲಂ ಚ welfare, ಅವ್ಯಯಂ ಚೈವ imperishability, ಮುಹು: ಮಹುಃ again and again, ಪೃಚ್ಛತೇ is enquiring.

"O Great monarch! Mithila's lord, king Janaka, with the sacred fire in front again and again enquires about your health and the spiritual well-being of your preceptors, priests and attendants in words filled with sweetness and affection.

ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಕುಶಲಮವ್ಯಗ್ರಂ ವೈದೇಹೋ ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪ:.

ಕೌಶಿಕಾನುಮತೇ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭವನ್ತಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷1.68.7৷৷

ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪ: king of Mithila, ವೈದೇಹ: Janaka, ಅವ್ಯಗ್ರಮ್ diligently, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having ascertained, ಕೌಶಿಕಾನುಮತೇ with the permission of Viswamitra, ಭವನ್ತಮ್ to you, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ word, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Janaka, the king of Mithila with the enquiry about your welfare, with the permission of the son of Kausika (Viswamitra) sends you this message:

ಪೂರ್ವಂ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾ ವಿದಿತಾ ವೀರ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಾ ಮಮಾತ್ಮಜಾ.

ರಾಜಾನಶ್ಚ ಕೃತಾಮರ್ಷಾನಿರ್ವೀರ್ಯಾ ವಿಮುಖೀಕೃತಾ:৷৷1.68.8৷৷

ಮಮ ಆತ್ಮಜಾ my daughter, ವೀರ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಾ as a reward of prowess, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ formerly, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾ vow, ವಿದಿತಾ known to everybody, ಕೃತಾಮರ್ಷಾ: made indignant, ನಿರ್ವೀರ್ಯಾ: powerless, ರಾಜಾನ: kings also, ವಿಮುಖೀಕೃತಾ: were made to turn back.

O King! It is well-known that formerly I had vowed to give my daughter to a groom as a reward for prowess. Disappointed when proved powerless, the kings became indignant and opposed me.

ಸೇಯಂ ಮಮ ಸುತಾ ರಾಜನ್ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಪುರಸ್ಸರೈ:.

ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾಗತೈರ್ವೀರೈರ್ನಿರ್ಜಿತಾ ತವ ಪುತ್ರಕೈ:৷৷1.68.9৷৷

ರಾಜನ್ O! King, ಸಾ ಇಯಮ್ that this, ಮಮ my, ಸುತಾ daughter, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಪುರಸ್ಸರೈ: with Viswamitra at the forefront ahead, ಯದೃಚ್ಛಯಾ casually, ಆಗತೈ: who had come, ತವ your, ವೀರೈ: heroic ones, ಪುತ್ರಕೈ: by your sons, ನಿರ್ಜಿತಾ has been won.

O King! that this daughter of mine has been won by your heroic son Rama who has come here casually led by Viswamitra.

ತಚ್ಚ ರಾಜನ್ ಧನುರ್ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಭಗ್ನಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ರಾಮೇಣ ಹಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಮಹತ್ಯಾಂ ಜನಸಂಸದಿ৷৷1.68.10৷৷

ಮಹಾರಾಜ O! Great among kings, ರಾಜನ್ Dasaratha!, ತತ್ that, ದಿವ್ಯಮ್ divine, ಧನು: bow, ಮಹತ್ಯಾಮ್ in the illimitable glory, ಜನಸಂಸದಿ in the assembly of people, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the magnanimous, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಮಧ್ಯೇ in the middle, ಭಗ್ನಮ್ is broken.

O Great king, Dasaratha! the divine bow with its limitless glory was broken in the middle by the great self Rama in the assembly of people.

ಅಸ್ಮೈ ದೇಯಾ ಮಯಾ ಸೀತಾ ವೀರ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನೇ.

ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಂ ಕರ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ತದನುಜ್ಞಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷1.68.11৷৷

ವೀರ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಾ the 'Reward for Prowess', ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಅಸ್ಮೈ to this, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನೇ eminent one, ಮಯಾ by me, ದೇಯಾ fit to be given, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಮ್ vow, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to fufill, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ desiring, ತತ್ for that reason, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತುಮ್ to give your consent, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves of you.

Sita is fit to be given in marriage to this eminent Rama as a reward for his prowess. I request you to give your consent to fulfil my vow.

ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯೋ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಪುರೋಹಿತಪುರಸ್ಸರ:.

ಶೀಘ್ರಮಾಗಚ್ಛ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮರ್ಹಸಿ ರಾಘವೌ ৷৷1.68.12৷৷

ಮಹಾರಾಜ O! Mighty king, ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ: with your preceptors, ಪುರೋಹಿತಪುರಸ್ಸರ: with official priest walking ahead, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ speedily, ಆಗಚ್ಛ come here, ತೇ ಭದ್ರಮ್ prosperity to you, ರಾಘವೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to behold, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves of you.

O Mighty king! be blessed. Come here soon with your preceptors and priest. You ought to be reumitd with Rama amd Lakshmana.

ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಚ ಮಮ ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರ ನಿರ್ವರ್ತಯಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.

ಪುತ್ರಯೋರುಭಯೋರೇವ ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ತ್ವಮಪಿ ಲಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ৷৷1.68.13৷৷

ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರ O! Indra among kings, ಮಮ for me, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ pleasure, ನಿರ್ವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to cause, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves of you, ತ್ವಮಪಿ you also, ಉಭಯೋ: both of your, ಪುತ್ರಯೋ: sons, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ delight, ಲಪ್ಸ್ಯಸೇ will obtain.

O Indra among kings! you will not only bring me pleasure, you will also be happy to see your sons.

ಏವಂ ವಿದೇಹಾಧಿಪತಿರ್ಮಧುರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷1.68.14৷৷

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತ ಶ್ಶತಾನನ್ದಮತೇ ಸ್ಥಿತ:.

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ವಿರತಾ ದೂತಾ ರಾಜಗೌರವಶಙ್ಕಿತಾ:৷৷1.68.15৷৷

ವಿದೇಹಾಧಿಪತಿ: king of Videha, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತ: with Viwsamitra's approval, ಶತಾನನ್ದಮತೇ in line with Satananda's thinking, ಸ್ಥಿತ: staying, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಮಧುರಮ್ sweet, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke, ದೂತಾ: messengers, ಇತಿ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having thus spoken, ರಾಜಗೌರವಶಙ್ಕಿತಾ: fearing out of respect for king, ವಿರತಾ: concluded.

The king of Videha (Janaka) with Viswamitra's approval and in line with Satananda's thinking has conveyed these sweet words". The messengers having said so concluded out of respect for their king (afraid that they might look overtalkative).

ದೂತವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಚ ತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾ ಪರಮಹರ್ಷಿತ:.

ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ವಾಮದೇವಂ ಚ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣೋನ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ಸೋಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷1.68.16৷৷

ಸ: ರಾಜಾ that king, ತತ್ that, ದೂತವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words of messengers, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having listened, ಪರಮಹರ್ಷಿತ: exceedingly rejoiced, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮ್ Vasishta, ವಾಮದೇವಮ್ Vamadeva, ಅನ್ಯಾನ್ other, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಶ್ಚ ministers, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Exceedingly happy to hear the words of the messengers, the king said to Vasishta, Vamadeva and other ministers.

ಗುಪ್ತ: ಕುಶಿಕಪುತ್ರೇಣ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನ:.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ವಿದೇಹೇಷು ವಸತ್ಯಸೌ৷৷1.68.17৷৷

ಅಸೌ this, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾನನ್ದವರ್ಧನ: enhancing the joy of Kausalya, ಕುಶಿಕಪುತ್ರೇಣ by the son of Kusika, Visvamitra, ಗುಪ್ತ: protected, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ along with brother Lakshmana, ವಿದೇಹೇಷು in the country of Videha, ವಸತಿ living.

"The enhancer of the joy of Kausalya (Rama) along with hs brother Lakshmana under the protection of Viswamitra is now staying in the coutry of the Videhas."

ದೃಷ್ಟವೀರ್ಯಸ್ತು ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥೋ ಜನಕೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಸಮ್ಪ್ರದಾನಂ ಸುತಾಯಾಸ್ತು ರಾಘವೇ ಕರ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ৷৷1.68.18৷৷

ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: Rama, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the illustrious, ಜನಕೇನ by Janaka, ದೃಷ್ಟವೀರ್ಯ: having proved the prowess (that Janaka), ಸುತಾಯಾ: daughter's, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರದಾನಮ್ bestowal, ರಾಘವೇ to Rama, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ is desiring.

Illustrious Janaka desires to bestow his daughter on the descendat of Kakustha (Rama) whose prowess he has witnessed.

ಯದಿ ವೋ ರೋಚತೇ ವೃತ್ತಂ ಜನಕಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ:.

ಪುರೀಂ ಗಚ್ಛಾಮಹೇ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಮಾ ಭೂತ್ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ ಪರ್ಯಯ:৷৷1.68.19৷৷

ಮಹಾತ್ಮನ: of the distinguished, ಜನಕಸ್ಯ Janaka's, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ behaviour (character ), ವ: to you, ರೋಚತೇ ಯದಿ is approved (looked) by you with favour, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ immediately, ಪುರೀಮ್ city of Mithila, ಗಚ್ಛಾಮಹೇ shall go, ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ time's, ಪರ್ಯಯ: delay, ಮಾಭೂತ್ let not be there.

If you approve the action, of the distinguished Janaka, let us hurry to the city of Mithila. Let there be no delay".

ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣೋ ಬಾಢಮಿತ್ಯಾಹು: ಸಹ ಸರ್ವೈರ್ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ:.

ಸುಪ್ರೀತಶ್ಚಾಬ್ರವೀದ್ರಾಜಾ ಶ್ವೋ ಯಾತ್ರೇತಿ ಸ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣ:৷৷1.68.20৷৷

ಸರ್ವೈ: by all, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ: ಸಹ maharshis, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣ: along with all the ministers, ಬಾಢಮಿತಿ "certainly so", ಆಹು: said, ಸುಪ್ರೀತ: highly delighted, ಸ: ರಾಜಾ that king, ಶ್ವ: tomorrow, ಯಾತ್ರಾ journey, ಇತಿ so, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣ: addrressing ministers, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

All the maharshis and the ministers said, 'certainly so'. And the king, overwhelmed with joy, said, "we start tomorrow".

ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಸ್ತು ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ರಾತ್ರಿಂ ಪರಮಸತ್ಕೃತಾ:.

ಊಷು ಸ್ತೇಮುದಿತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಗುಣೈ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೈಸ್ಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ:৷৷1.68.21৷৷

ಸರ್ವೈ: by all, ಗುಣೈ: excellent virtues, ಸಮನ್ವಿತಾ: endowed with, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king Janaka's, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಸ್ತು counsellors, ಪರಮಸತ್ಕೃತಾ: highly honoured, ಮುದಿತಾ: were pleased, ರಾತ್ರಿಮ್ night, ಊಷು: spent.

The virtuous counsellors of the Indra among kings highly honoured spent the night happily.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಬಾಲಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಷಷ್ಟಿತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗ:৷৷
Thus ends the sixtyeighth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
