[Janaka sends messengers to fetch his brother Kusadhwaja -- at the request of Dasaratha Vasishta narrates the greatness of Ikshvaku dynasty.]

ತತ: ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ ಜನಕ: ಕೃತಕರ್ಮಾ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ:.

ಉವಾಚ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞ ಶ್ಶತಾನನ್ದಂ ಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್৷৷1.70.1৷৷


ತತ: thereafter, ಪ್ರಭಾತೇ at dawn, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ: by maharshis, ಕೃತಕರ್ಮಾ having performed daily (sacrificial) acts, ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞ: conversant in speech, ಜನಕ: Janaka, ಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ chief priest, ಶತಾನನ್ದಮ್ Satananda, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Thereafter at dawn after the maharshis had performed their daily (sacrificial) rites the eloquent Janaka said to the chief priest Satananda:
ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಮಮ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಯವೀಯಾನತಿಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ:.

ಕುಶಧ್ವಜ ಇತಿ ಖ್ಯಾತ: ಪುರೀಮಧ್ಯವಸಚ್ಛುಭಾಮ್৷৷1.70.2৷৷

ವಾರ್ಯಾಫಲಕಪರ್ಯನ್ತಾಂ ಪಿಬನ್ನಿಕ್ಷುಮತೀಂ ನದೀಮ್.

ಸಾಙ್ಕಾಶ್ಯಾಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಸಙ್ಕಾಶಾಂ ವಿಮಾನಮಿವ ಪುಷ್ಪಕಮ್৷৷1.70.3৷৷


ಅತಿಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ: extremely righteous, ಕುಶಧ್ವಜ: ಇತಿ named Kusadhwaja, ಖ್ಯಾತ: renowned, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: most brilliant, ಮಮ my, ಯವೀಯಾನ್ younger, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಇಕ್ಷುಮತೀಮ್ named Ikshumati, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಪಿಬನ್ drinking, ವಾರ್ಯಾಫಲಕಪರ್ಯನ್ತಾಮ್ darts planted in water as boundary, ಶುಭಾಮ್ auspicious, ಪುಣ್ಯಸಙ್ಕಾಶಾಮ್ sacred, ಸಾಙ್ಕಾಶ್ಯಾಂ ಪುರೀಮ್ named Sankasya, ಪುಷ್ಪಕಮ್ Pushpaka, ವಿಮಾನಮಿವ like chariot, ಅಧ್ಯವಸತ್ is residing.

"The extremely righteous, renowned and most brilliant Kusadhwaja, my younger brother is (at present) ruling the sacred kingdom of Sankasya, which is like the aerial chariot Pushpaka, with darts planted in water as boundary on the bank of the auspicious, sacred river Ikshumati.
ತಮಹಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಯಜ್ಞಗೋಪ್ತಾ ಸ ಮೇ ಮತ:.

ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಸೋಪಿ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಇಮಾಂ ಭೋಕ್ತಾ ಮಯಾ ಸಹ৷৷1.70.4৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ತಮ್ him, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to behold, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I am desiring, ಸ: he, ಮೇ my, ಯಜ್ಞಗೋಪ್ತಾ protector of the sacrifice, ಮತ: has been accepted, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: most glorious, ಸೋಪಿ he also, ಮಯಾ ಸಹ with me, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ pleasure, ಭೋಕ್ತಾ will enjoy.

I desire to see Kusadhwaja who I have accepted as the protector of the sacrifice. I want that my glorious brother should share this pleasure, with me".
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೇ ತು ವಚನೇ ಶತಾನನ್ದಸ್ಯ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ.

ಆಗತಾ: ಕೇಚಿದವ್ಯಗ್ರಾ ಜನಕಸ್ತಾನ್ ಸಮಾದಿಶತ್৷৷1.70.5৷৷


ಶತಾನನ್ದಸ್ಯ Satananda's, ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ in the presence, ಏವಮ್ thus, ವಚನೇ words, ಉಕ್ತೇ (ಸತಿ) when he uttered, ಅವ್ಯಗ್ರಾ: undistracted, ಕೇಚಿತ್ some (attendants), ಆಗತಾ: had come, ಜನಕ: Janaka, ತಾನ್ them, ಸಮಾದಿಶತ್ commanded.

Janaka having said so in the presence of Satananda gave instructions to a few faithful attendants who were present.
ಶಾಸನಾತ್ತು ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಯಯುಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರವಾಜಿಭಿ:.

ಸಮಾನೇತುಂ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಂ ವಿಷ್ಣುಮಿನ್ದ್ರಾಜ್ಞಯಾ ಯಥಾ৷৷1.70.6৷৷


ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king Janaka's, ಶಾಸನಾತ್ by the command, ಇನ್ದ್ರಾಜ್ಞಯಾ by the order of Indra, ವಿಷ್ಣುಂ ಯಥಾ like Visnu, ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ tiger among men, ಸಮಾನೇತುಮ್ to bring him, ಶೀಘ್ರವಾಜಿಭಿ: on swift moving steeds, ಪ್ರಯಯು: rode away.

In obedience to the command of Indra among men (king Janaka), the messengers rode away on swift horses to bring king Kusadhwaja, a tiger among men just like fetching Visnu by the orders of Indra.
ಸಾಙ್ಕಾಶ್ಯಾಂ ತೇ ಸಮಾಗತ್ಯ ದದೃಶುಶ್ಚ ಕುಶಧ್ವಜಮ್.

ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ಯಥಾವೃತ್ತಂ ಜನಕಸ್ಯ ಚ ಚಿನ್ತಿತಮ್৷৷1.70.7৷৷


ತೇ those messengers, ಸಾಙ್ಕಾಶ್ಯಾಮ್ city of Sankasya, ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ಕುಶಧ್ವಜಮ್ Kusadhwaja, ದದೃಶುಶ್ಚ beheld him, ಯಥಾವೃತ್ತಮ್ as happened, ಜನಕಸ್ಯ Janaka's, ಚಿನ್ತಿತಮ್ intention, ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ ಚ informed.

The messengers reached Sankasya, met Kusadhwaja and related to him what had happened. They informed him the intention of (king) Janaka.
ತದ್ವೃತ್ತಂ ನೃಪತಿ ಶ್ಶೃತ್ವಾ ದೂತಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈರ್ಮಹಾಬಲೈ:.

ಅಜ್ಞಾಯಾಥ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಆಜಗಾಮ ಕುಶಧ್ವಜ:৷৷1.70.8৷৷


ನೃಪತಿ king, ಕುಶಧ್ವಜ: Kusadhwaja, ಮಹಾಬಲೈ: by men endowed with strength, ದೂತಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈ: by the loyal messengers, ತತ್ that, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ events, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having learned, ಅಥ thereafter, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ಯ king's, ಆಜ್ಞಯಾ by order, ಆಜಗಾಮ set out.

Kusadhwaja having heard the events from the loyal, mighty messengers set out for Mithila in compliance with the request of the king (Janaka).
ಸ ದದರ್ಶ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಜನಕಂ ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಮ್.

ಸೋಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಶತಾನನ್ದಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್৷৷1.70.9৷৷

ರಾಜಾರ್ಹಂ ಪರಮಂ ದಿವ್ಯಮಾಸನಂ ಚಾಧ್ಯರೋಹತ.


ಸ: he, ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಮ್ devoted to righteousness, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ magnanimous, ಜನಕಮ್ Janaka, ದದರ್ಶ beheld, ಸ: he, ಶತಾನನ್ದಮ್ Satananda, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಮ್ virtuous, ರಾಜಾನಂ ಚ king also, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having saluted with reverence, ರಾಜಾರ್ಹಮ್ befitting a king, ಪರಮಮ್ great, ದಿವ್ಯಮ್ excellent, ಆಸನಮ್ seat, ಅಧ್ಯರೋಹತ occupied.

There he saw the high-souled Janaka devoted to righteousness. Having paid his regards to Satananda and the virtuous king he occupied an exalted seat befitting a
king.
ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟಾವುಭೌ ತೌ ತು ಭ್ರಾತರಾವತಿತೇಜಸೌ৷৷1.70.10৷৷

ಪ್ರೇಷಯಾಮಾಸತುರ್ವೀರೌ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಂ ಸುದಾಮನಮ್.


ಅತಿತೇಜಸೌ possessing great splendour, ತೌ ವೀರೌ those two heores, ಉಭೌ both, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ brothers, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟೌ seated, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ wisest of ministers, ಸುದಾಮನಮ್ Sudaman, ಪ್ರೇಷಯಾಮಾಸತು: despatched.

The two heroic brothers endowed with great splendour seated beside each other, despatched Sudamana the wisest of ministers (to Dasaratha).
ಗಚ್ಛ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಪತೇ ಶೀಘ್ರಮೈಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಮಮಿತಪ್ರಭಮ್৷৷1.70.11৷৷

ಆತ್ಮಜೈಸ್ಸಹ ದುರ್ಧರ್ಷಮಾನಯಸ್ವ ಸಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಮ್.


ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಪತೇ O! Foremost of counsellors, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ speedily, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಅಮಿತಪ್ರಭಮ್ immeasurable splendour, ಐಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಮ್ Ikshvaku king Dasaratha, ದುರ್ಧರ್ಷಮ್ invincible, ಸಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಮ್ together with ministers, ಆತ್ಮಜೈ: along with sons, ಸಮಾನಯಸ್ವ bring him.

"O Foremost among counsellors, go speedily and bring along with his ministers and sons the invincible Dasaratha of the Ikshvakus dynasty whose splendour is immeasurable".
ಔಪಕಾರ್ಯಾಂ ಸ ಗತ್ವಾ ತು ರಘೂಣಾಂ ಕುಲವರ್ಧನಮ್৷৷1.70.12৷৷

ದದರ್ಶ ಶಿರಸಾ ಚೈನಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.


ಸ: he, ಔಪಕಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ tent, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ರಘೂಣಾಮ್ of the race of Raghus, ಕುಲವರ್ಧನಮ್ perpetuating, ದದರ್ಶ saw, ಏನಮ್ him, ಶಿರಸಾ bowing down his head, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having saluted him, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Having reached the tent, he (Sudamana) saw Dasaratha, perpetuator of the race of the
Raghus and bowing down his head, said:
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತೇ ವೀರ ವೈದೇಹೋ ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪ:৷৷1.70.13৷৷

ಸ ತ್ವಾಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ವ್ಯವಸಿತಸ್ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್.


ವೀರ O! Heroic one, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತೇ O! Lord of Ayodhya, ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪ: lord of Mithila, ವೈದೇಹ: Janaka, ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಪುರೋಹಿತಮ್ along with spiritual preceptors and chief priest, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಸಃ he, ವ್ಯವಸಿತ: has decided.

"O Heroic lord of Ayodhya, Janaka, the lord of Mithila desires to see you along with preceptors and priest".
ಮಂತ್ರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಚ ಶ್ಶೃತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾ ಸರ್ಷಿಗಣಸ್ತದಾ৷৷1.70.14৷৷

ಸಬಂಧುರಗಮತ್ತತ್ರ ಜನಕೋ ಯತ್ರ ವರ್ತತೇ.


ತದಾ then, ರಾಜಾ king, ಮಂತ್ರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಚ: the words of the best of counsellors, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having listened, ಸರ್ಷಿಗಣ: with hosts of rishis, ಸಬಂಧು: with relations, ಜನಕ: Janaka, ಯತ್ರ where, ವರ್ತತೇ was waiting, ತತ್ರ there, ಅಗಮತ್ went.

King Dasaratha on hearing the words of the best of the counsellors reached the place
where Janaka was waiting with hosts of rishis and relations.
ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಸಹಿತ ಸ್ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ: ಸಬಾನ್ಧವ:৷৷1.70.15৷৷

ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಾಕ್ಯವಿದಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೋ ವೈದೇಹಮಿದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.


ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಸಹಿತ: along with counsellors, ಸಬಾನ್ಧವ: with relations, ಸ: king Dasaratha, ವಾಕ್ಯವಿದಾಮ್ among those skilled speech, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ: excellent, ರಾಜಾ king, ವೈದೇಹಮ್ addressing, ಇದಮ್ these, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

The king (Dasaratha), skilled in speech, accompanied by counsellors and kins said to Janaka,the lord of the Videhas:
ವಿದಿತಂ ತೇ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲದೈವತಮ್৷৷1.70.16৷৷

ವಕ್ತಾ ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷು ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ಭಗವಾನೃಷಿ:.


ಮಹಾರಾಜ O! Great king, ಭಗವಾನ್ venerable, ವಸಿಷ್ಠ: Vasishta, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲದೈವತಮ್ spiritual protector of Ikshvaku race, ಸರ್ವೇಷು in all, ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷು ceremonies, ವಕ್ತಾ spokesman, ತೇ to you, ವಿದಿತಮ್ is known.

"O Great king! venerable Vasishta is the spiritual protector of the Ikshvakus race and it is known that for all ceremonies he is our spokesman".
ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತಸ್ಸಹ ಸರ್ವೈರ್ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ:৷৷1.70.17৷৷

ಏಷ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ಮೇ ಯಥಾಕ್ರಮಮ್.


ಸರ್ವೈ: by all, ಮಹರ್ಷಿಭಿ: ಸಹ along with maharshis, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಾಭ್ಯನುಜ್ಞಾತ: having been permitted by Visvamitra, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ virtuous, ಏಷ: ವಸಿಷ್ಠ: this Vasishta, ಯಥಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ in detailed order, ಮೇ my (race), ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will tell you.

"Having been permitted by Viswamitra, along with all maharshis virtuous Vasishta will tell you in detail about my race".
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇ ರಾಜ್ಞಾಂ ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್৷৷1.70.18৷৷

ತೂಷ್ಣೀಂಭೂತೇ ದಶರಥೇ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ಭಗವಾನೃಷಿ:.

ಉವಾಚ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞೋ ವೈದೇಹಂ ಸಪುರೋಧಸಮ್৷৷1.70.19৷৷


ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇ when the best among men, ದಶರಥೇ Dasaratha, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾಮ್ of the distinguished, ರಾಜ್ಞಾಮ್ kings, ಮಧ್ಯೇ amidst, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having spoken, ತೂಷ್ಣೀಂಭೂತೇ remained silent, ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞ: well-versed in speech, ಭಗವಾನ್ adorable, ವಸಿಷ್ಠ: ಋಷಿಃ Vasishta, ಸಪುರೋಧಸಮ್ in the company of priests, ವೈದೇಹಮ್ Janaka, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ spoke.

Having said this amidst the best of men and the most distinguished among kings, Dasaratha remained silent. Then Vasishta, the venerable sage, well-versed in speech
spoke to the Lord of Videhas (Janaka) in the midst of priests.
ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಪ್ರಭವೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ ಶಾಶ್ವತೋ ನಿತ್ಯ ಅವ್ಯಯ:.

ತಸ್ಮಾನ್ಮರೀಚಿ ಸ್ಸಂಜಜ್ಞೇ ಮರೀಚೇ: ಕಾಶ್ಯಪ: ಸುತ:৷৷1.70.20৷৷


ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಪ್ರಭವ: the unmanifest, ಶಾಶ್ವತ: eternal, ನಿತ್ಯ: constant, ಅವ್ಯಯ: Imperishable, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ Brahma, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ from him, ಮರೀಚಿ: Marichi, ಸಂಜಜ್ಞೇ was born, ಮರೀಚೇ: from Marichi, ಕಾಶ್ಯಪ: Kasyapa, ಸುತ: son (sprang).

"From the unmanifest was born the eternal, the constant, the imperishable Brahma. To him was born Marichi and to Marichi, Kasyapa.
ವಿವಸ್ವಾನ್ ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಾಜ್ಜಜ್ಞೇ ಮನುರ್ವೈವಸ್ವತ ಸ್ಸ್ಮೃತ:.

ಮನು: ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿ: ಪೂರ್ವಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಸ್ತು ಮನೋಸ್ಸುತ:৷৷1.70.21৷৷


ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಾತ್ from Kasyapa, ವಿವಸ್ವಾನ್ Vivasvan, ಜಜ್ಞೇ was begotten, ವೈವಸ್ವತ: as Vivasvata, ಮನು: Manu, ಸ್ಮೃತ: said, ಮನು: Manu, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ formerly, ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿ: prajapati, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು: Ikshavaku, ಮನೋ: Manu's, ಸುತ: son.

Kasyapa begot Vivasvan and Vivasvan, Manu. Ikshavaku was the son of Manu
otherwise called Prajapati or Vaivasvata.
ತಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ರಾಜಾನಂ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಪೂರ್ವಕಮ್.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೋಸ್ತು ಸುತಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಕುಕ್ಷಿರಿತ್ಯೇವ ವಿಶ್ರುತ:৷৷1.70.22৷৷


ತಮ್ ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಮ್ him as Ikshvaku, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in the city of Ayodhya, ಪೂರ್ವಕಮ್ ರಾಜಾನಮ್ ancestral king, ವಿದ್ಧಿ be informed, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ the glorious, ಕುಕ್ಷಿರಿತ್ಯೇವ known as Kukshi, ವಿಶ್ರುತ: well-known, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೋ: Ikshvaku's, ಸುತ: son(was born).

It may be noted that Ikshvaku was the first ancestral king of Ayodhya whose son was the well-known, glorious Kukshi.
ಕುಕ್ಷೇರಥಾತ್ಮಜ: ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ವಿಕುಕ್ಷಿರುದಪದ್ಯತ.

ವಿಕುಕ್ಷೇಸ್ತು ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಬಾಣ: ಪುತ್ರ: ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್৷৷1.70.23৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಕುಕ್ಷೇ: Kushi's, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ವಿಕುಕ್ಷಿ: Vikushi, ಆತ್ಮಜ: as son, ಉದಪದ್ಯತ was born, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: highly lustrous, ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ valourous, ಬಾಣ: Bana, ವಿಕುಕ್ಷೇ: Vikushi's, ಪುತ್ರ: son.

Prosperous Vikukshi was Kukshi's son, who brought forth brilliant and powerful Bana.
ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ ತು ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಅನರಣ್ಯ: ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್.

ಅನರಣ್ಯಾತ್ಪೃಥುರ್ಜಜ್ಞೇ ತ್ರಿಶಙ್ಕುಸ್ತು ಪೃಥೋಸ್ಸುತ:৷৷1.70.24৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: highly splendrous, ಪ್ರತಾಪವಾನ್ valourous, ಅನರಣ್ಯ: Anaranya, ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ Bana's, ಅನರಣ್ಯಾತ್ from Anaranya, ಪೃಥು: Pruthu, ಜಜ್ಞೇ born, ತ್ರಿಶಙ್ಕು: ತು Trishanku, ಪೃಥೋ Pruthu's, ಸುತ: son.

Bana's son was the most brilliant and valiant Anaranya whose son Pruthu was succeeded by Trisanku.

Trisanku's famous son was Dundumara also known as Yuvanashva whose son was king Mandhata.
ಮಾನ್ಧಾತುಸ್ತು ಸುತ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಸುಸನ್ಧಿರುದಪದ್ಯತ.

Mandhata's son was prosperous Susandhi who brought forth two sons Dhruvasandhi and Prasenajit.

ಯಸ್ಯ for Asita, ಹೈಹಯಾ: Haihayas, ತಾಲಜಂಘಾಶ್ಚ Talajanghas, ಶೂರಾ: valiant men, ಶಶಿಬಿನ್ದವಶ್ಚ Sasibindus, ಏತೇ ಪ್ರತಿರಾಜಾನ: kings fighting against him, ಶತ್ರವ: enemies, ಉದಪದ್ಯನ್ತ arose.

Valiant kings belonging to the races of the Haihayas, Talaiangha, and Sasibindus became the enemies to Asita.
ತಾಂಸ್ತು ಸ ಪ್ರತಿಯುಧ್ಯನ್ ವೈ ಯುದ್ಧೇ ರಾಜಾ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿತ:.

ಹಿಮವನ್ತಮುಪಾಗಮ್ಯ ಭೃಗುಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೇವಸತ್৷৷1.70.29৷৷

ಅಸಿತೋಲ್ಪಬಲೋ ರಾಜಾ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಸ್ಸಹಿತಸ್ತದಾ.


ಸ: ರಾಜಾ that king, ತಾನ್ them, ಯುದ್ಧೇ in the conflict, ಪ್ರತಿಯುಧ್ಯನ್ fighting against them, ಪ್ರವಾಸಿತ: was exiled from his kingdom, ರಾಜಾ ಅಸಿತ: king Asita, ಅಲ್ಪಬಲ: with relatively lesser strength, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿ: with counsellors, ಸಹಿತ: accompanied, ತದಾ then, ಹಿಮವನ್ತಮ್ towards Himavat mountain, ಉಪಾಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ಭೃಗುಪ್ರಸ್ರವಣೇ in a place known as Bhriguprasravana, ಅವಸತ್ lived.

The king Asita who was a weakling was defeated in the conflict against the kings and was exiled. Along with his counsellors he lived at on the Bhriguprasravana Himavat mountain.

ಅಸ್ಯ his, ದ್ವೇ two, ಭಾರ್ಯೇ wives, ಗರ್ಭಿಣ್ಯೌ pregnant, ಬಭೂವತು: became, ಇತಿ thus, ಶ್ರುತಮ್ is known, ಏಕಾ one, ಗರ್ಭವಿನಾಶಾಯ to destroy the embryo, ಸಪತ್ನಯೈ the other wife, ಸಗರಮ್ poison mixed in food, ದದೌ gave.

It is said that his (Asita's) two wives were pregnant. One gave food mixed with poison to the other with the intention of destroying her embryo.

ತತ: afterwards, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ delightful, ಶೈಲವರಮ್ best of mountains, ಅಭಿರತ: relished, ಭಾರ್ಗವ: of the family of Bhrigu, ಚ್ಯವನೋ ನಾಮ named Chyavana, ಹಿಮವನ್ತಮ್ Himavt, ಉಪಾಶ್ರಿತ: has taken refuge.

At that time Chyavana of the family of Bhrigu liked to stay at Himavat, the great, pleasant mountain.
ತತ್ರೈಕಾ ತು ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ ಭಾರ್ಗವಂ ದೇವವರ್ಚಸಮ್৷৷1.70.32৷৷

ವವನ್ದೇ ಪದ್ಮಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷೀ ಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷನ್ತೀ ಸುತಮಾತ್ಮನ:.


ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾ highly accomplished, ತತ್ರ (ತಯೋ:) ಏಕಾ one of those two, ಪದ್ಮಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷೀ lotus-eyed, ಆತ್ಮನ: for her, ಸುತಮ್ son, ಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷನ್ತೀ desiring, ದೇವವರ್ಚಸಮ್ resembling the lustre of devatas, ಭಾರ್ಗವಮ್ Chyavana, ವವನ್ದೇ offered salutations.

That the lotus-eyed and highly accomplished Kalindi, offered herself for a son to
Chyavana who was glowing like a god.
ತಮೃಷಿಂ ಸಾಭ್ಯುಪಾಗಮ್ಯ ಕಾಲಿಂದೀ ಚಾಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್৷৷1.70.33৷৷

ಸ ತಾಮಭ್ಯವದದ್ವಿಪ್ರ: ಪುತ್ರೇಪ್ಸುಂ ಪುತ್ರಜನ್ಮನಿ.


ಸಾ that, ಕಾಲಿಂದೀ ಚ Kalindi also, ತಮ್ that, ಋಷಿಮ್ ascetic, ಅಭ್ಯುಪಾಗಮ್ಯ after approaching, ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ paid obeisance, ಸ: that, ವಿಪ್ರ: brahmin, ತಾಮ್ her, ಪುತ್ರೇಪ್ಸುಮ್ desiring son, ಪುತ್ರಜನ್ಮನಿ concerning the birth of a son to her, ಅಭ್ಯವದತ್ spoke.

Having approached the ascetic. Kalindi paid obeisance to him who said:
ತವ ಕುಕ್ಷೌ ಮಹಾಭಾಗೇ ಸುಪುತ್ರಸ್ಸುಮಹಾಬಲ:৷৷1.70.34৷৷

ಮಹಾವೀರ್ಯೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಅಚಿರಾತ್ಸಞ್ಜನಿಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಗರೇಣ ಸಹಿತ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಮಾ ಶುಚ: ಕಮಲೇಕ್ಷಣೇ৷৷1.70.35৷৷


ಮಹಾಭಾಗೇ O! Prosperous one, ತವ your, ಕುಕ್ಷೌ in womb, ಸುಮಹಾಬಲ: having great prowess, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: highly lustrous, ಸುಪುತ್ರ: virtuous child, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ glorious, ಗರೇಣ with poison, ಸಹಿತ: furnished, ಅಚಿರಾತ್ in a short time, ಸಞ್ಜನಿಷ್ಯತಿ will be born, ಕಮಲೇಕ್ಷಣೇ O! Lotus eyed-one, ಮಾ ಶುಚ: do not grieve.

'O Great lady! a child of high prowess, lustre and virtues is growing in your womb. In a short time this glorious son carrying with him the poison (administered to you) will be born. O Lotus-eyed lady, do not grieve'.
ಚ್ಯವನಂ ತು ನಮಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೀ ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ.

ಪತಿಶೋಕಾತುರಾ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪುತ್ರಂ ದೇವೀ ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ৷৷1.70.36৷৷


ರಾಜಪುತ್ರೀ princess, ಪತಿವ್ರತಾ chaste and virtuous one, ಪತಿಶೋಕಾತುರಾ afflicted with the sorrow due to loss of her husband, ದೇವೀ that eldest queen, ಚ್ಯವನಮ್ Chyavana, ನಮಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ having saluted him, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that husband, ಪುತ್ರಮ್ son, ವ್ಯಜಾಯತ gave birth.

This eldest queen who was a devoted wife, afflicted with sorrow due to loss of her
husband gave birth to a son by the grace of Chyavana.
ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯಾ ತು ಗರಸ್ತಸ್ಯೈ ದತ್ತೋ ಗರ್ಭಜಿಘಾಂಸಯಾ.

ಸಹ ತೇನ ಗರೇಣೈವ ಜಾತ: ಸ ಸಗರೋಭವತ್৷৷1.70.37৷৷


ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯಾ by her rival queen, ತಸ್ಯೈ for her, ಗರ್ಭಜಿಘಾಂಸಯಾ with the intention of destroying embryo, ಗರ: poison, ದತ್ತ: was given, ತೇನ by that, ಗರೇಣ ಸಹ ಏವ with poison itself, ಜಾತ: was born, ಸ: that, ಸಗರ: sagara, ಅಭವತ್ became.

Since poison was given to her by her rival queen with the intention of destroying the embryo, the son was born with poison and so came to be known as Sagara.
ಸಗರಸ್ಯಾಸಮಞ್ಜಸ್ತು ಅಸಮಞ್ಜಾತ್ತಥಾಂಶುಮಾನ್.

ದಿಲೀಪೋಂಶುಮತ: ಪುತ್ರೋ ದಿಲೀಪಸ್ಯ ಭಗೀರಥ:৷৷1.70.38৷৷


ಅಸಮಞ್ಜ: Asamanjasa, ಸಗರಸ್ಯ Sagara's, ತಥಾ also, ಅಸಮಞ್ಜಾತ್ from Asamanja, ಅಂಶುಮಾನ್ Anshuman, ದಿಲೀಪ: Dilipa, ಅಂಶುಮತ: Anshuman's, ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಭಗೀರಥ: Bhagiratha, ದಿಲೀಪಸ್ಯ Dilipa's (son).

Asamanja was the son of Sagara and to him was born Anshuman. Dilipa was the son of Anshuman and father of Bhagiratha.
ಭಗೀರಥಾತ್ಕಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಶ್ಚ ಕಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ ರಘುಸ್ಸುತ:.

ರಘೋಸ್ತು ಪುತ್ರಸ್ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ ಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧ: ಪುರುಷಾದಕ:৷৷1.70.39৷৷

ಕಲ್ಮಾಷಪಾದೋ ಹ್ಯಭವತ್ತಸ್ಮಾಜ್ಜಾತಸ್ತು ಶಂಖಣ:.


ಭಗೀರಥಾತ್ from Bhagiratha, ಕಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ: Kakutsthsa, ರಘು: Raghu, ಕಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಸ್ಯ Kakutsthsa's, ಸುತ: son, ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ powerful, ಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧ: Pravriddha, ರಘೋ: Raghu's, ಪುತ್ರ: son, ಪುರುಷಾದಕ: Purushadaka, ಕಲ್ಮಾಷಪಾದ: Kalmashapada, ಅಭವತ್ became, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for him, ಶಂಖಣ: Samkhana, ಜಾತ: was born.

Bhagiratha begot Kakustha whose son was Raghu. Powerful Pravriddha was Raghu's son. He became Purushadaka (cannibal), on the curse of Vasistha. He grasped water in order to retaliate Vasishta but was prevented by his wife. The water fell on his feet and he came to be known as Kalmashapada (feet polluted with water). Samkhana was born to him.

ಶಙ್ಘಣಸ್ಯ for Samkhana, ಸುದರ್ಶನ: Sudarsana, ಸುದರ್ಶನಾತ್ from Sudarsana, ಅಗ್ನಿವರ್ಣ: Agnivarna, ಅಗ್ನಿವರ್ಣಸ್ಯ for AgniVarna, ಶೀಘ್ರಗ: Sighraga, ಶೀಘ್ರಗಸ್ಯ for sighraga, ಮರು: Maru, ಸುತ: son, ಮರೋ: for Maru, ಪ್ರಶುಶ್ರುಕ: Prasusruka, ಪ್ರಶುಶ್ರುಕಾತ್ from Prasusukra, ಅಮ್ಬರೀಷ: Ambarisha, ಆಸೀತ್ were born.

Sudarsana was the son of Samkhana. His son was Agnivarna. To Agnivarna was born Sighraga and to Sighraga, Maru. To Maru, was born Prasusruka and to Prasrusuka, Ambarisha.
ಅಮ್ಬರೀಷಸ್ಯ ಪುತ್ರೋಭೂನ್ನಹುಷ: ಪೃಥಿವೀಪತಿ:.

King Nahusha was the son of Ambarisha. To Nahusha was born Yayati whose son was Nabhaga.

ನಾಭಾಗಸ್ಯ Nabhaga's, ಅಜ: Aja, ಬಭೂವ was born, ಅಜಾತ್ from Aja, ದಶರಥ: Dasaratha, ಅಭವತ್ was born, ಅಸ್ಮಾತ್ from this, ದಶರಥಾತ್ from Dasaratha, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ brothers, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ Rama and Lakshmana, ಜಾತೌ were born.

Nabhaga's son was Aja. Aja was the father of Dasaratha and Dasaratha, the father of Rama and Lakshmana.
ಆದಿವಂಶವಿಶುದ್ಧಾನಾಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಾಂ ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಿಣಾಮ್.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲಜಾತಾನಾಂ ವೀರಾಣಾಂ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಾಮ್৷৷1.70.44৷৷

ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಯೋರರ್ಥೇ ತ್ವತ್ಸುತೇ ವರಯೇ ನೃಪ!.

King, ಆದಿವಂಶವಿಶುದ್ಧಾನಾಮ್ possessing purity of race right from the beginning, ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಿಣಾಮ್ supremely virtuous, ವೀರಾಣಾಮ್ heroic, ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಾಮ್ truth speaking, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುಕುಲಜಾತಾನಾಮ್ sprung from the family of Ikshwaku, ರಾಜ್ಞಾಮ್ pertaining to the kings, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಯೋರರ್ಥೇ for Rama and Lakshmana, ತ್ವತ್ಸುತೇ your daughters, ವರಯೇ I choose as brides for them, ಸದೃಶಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ for both of the worthy ones, ಸದೃಶೇ equally accomplished two worthy daughters, ದಾತುಮ್ to bestow, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves of you.

Great among men, O King! be gracious enough to give your equally accomplished two daughters in mariage to Rama and Lakshmana who are born in the family of Ikshvakus kings possessing the purity of race right from the beginning. They are highly virtuous, heroic, and truthful. They have chosen your daughters as their brides".
