[Preparations for the marriage of the four sons of king Dasaratha.]

மஹாமுநி: mighty ascetic, விஷ்வாமித்ர: Visvamitra, வஸிஷ்டஸஹித: accompanied by Vasista, உக்தவந்தம் thus spoken, வீரம் valiant, வைதேஹம் king of Videha, நரிபம் addressing king Janaka, வசநம் words, உவாச said.
When Janaka the valiant king of Videha thus spoke (on the genealogy of his family) the mighty ascetic Viswamitra accompanied by Vasishta said to Janaka:
அசிந்த்யாந்யப்ரமேயாநி குலாநி நரபுங்கவ!.
இக்ஷ்வாகூணாஂ விதேஹாநாஂ நைஷாஂ துல்யோஸ்தி கஷ்சந৷৷1.72.2৷৷
இக்ஷ்வாகூணாஂ விதேஹாநாஂ நைஷாஂ துல்யோஸ்தி கஷ்சந৷৷1.72.2৷৷
நரபுங்கவ O! Pre-eminent among men, இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் of kings of Ikshvaku, விதேஹாநாஂ ச also of Videha, குலாநி races, அசிந்த்யாநி beyond comprehension, அப்ரமேயாநி immeasurable, ஏஷாஂ for these kings of Ikshvaku and Videha, துல்ய: equal, கஷ்சந anyone, நாஸ்தி is not there.
"O Pre-eminent among men! the glory of the two races of Ikshvakus as also of Videhas is in comprehensible and immeasurable. There is none equal to these kings of the Ikshvakus and Videhas.
ஸதரிஷோ தர்மஸம்பந்த: ஸதரிஷோ ரூபஸம்பதா.
ராமலக்ஷ்மணயோ ராஜந்! ஸீதா சோர்மிலயா ஸஹ৷৷1.72.3৷৷
ராமலக்ஷ்மணயோ ராஜந்! ஸீதா சோர்மிலயா ஸஹ৷৷1.72.3৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, ஊர்மிலயா ஸஹ along with Urmila, ஸீதா Sita, ராமலக்ஷ்மணயோ: for Rama and Lakshmana (is being offered), ஸதரிஷ: perfectly matched, தர்மஸம்பந்த: the marriage is in accordance with religious merit, ரூபஸம்பதாச in virtue and beauty, ஸதரிஷ: is fit.
O King! it is a perfect match between Sita and Rama and Urmila and Lakshmana. In respect of piety and beauty the match is perfect.
வக்தவ்யஂ ச நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட! ஷ்ரூயதாஂ வசநஂ மம.
ப்ராதா யவீயாந் தர்மஜ்ஞ ஏஷ ராஜா குஷத்வஜ:৷৷1.72.4৷৷

நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட! O! Best of men, மம my, வக்தவ்யஂ ச is fit to be divulged, வசநம் words, ஷ்ரூயதாம் may be heard, யவீயாந் ப்ராதா this younger brother, ஏஷ: ராஜா this king, குஷத்வஜ: Kusadhwaja, தர்மஜ்ஞ: knower of righteousness.
O Best of men! my words deserve to be heard. This younger brother king Kusadhwaja is knower of righteousness.
அஸ்ய தர்மாத்மநோ ராஜந்! ரூபேணாப்ரதிமஂ புவி .
ஸுதாத்வயஂ நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட பத்ந்யர்தஂ வரயாமஹே৷৷1.72.5৷৷

ராஜந் O! King, நரஷ்ரேஷ்ட O! Eminent among men, ரூபேண in beauty, புவி on this earth, அப்ரதிமம் unrivalled, அஸ்ய தர்மாத்மந: this virtuous one's, ஸுதாத்வயம் two daughters, பத்ந்யர்தம் as consorts, வரயாமஹே we are seeking.
O King, O Eminent among men! we seek the hands of this virtuous king's two daughters, unrivalled in beauty, on earth, as consorts.
பரதஸ்ய குமாரஸ்ய ஷத்ருக்நஸ்ய ச தீமத:.
வரயாமஸ்ஸுதே ராஜந் தயோரர்தே மஹாத்மநோ:৷৷1.72.6৷৷
வரயாமஸ்ஸுதே ராஜந் தயோரர்தே மஹாத்மநோ:৷৷1.72.6৷৷
ராஜந் O! King, குமாரஸ்ய of the youthful, பரதஸ்ய Bharata, தீமத: sagacious, ஷத்ருக்நஸ்ய ச for Satrughna also, மஹாத்மநோ: for the magnanimous ones, தயோரர்தே in the interests of both of them, ஸுதே two daughters, வரயாம: we choose.
O king! we choose your brother's daughters for the great souls: the young Bharata and the sagacious Satrughna.
புத்ரா தஷரதஸ்யேமே ரூபயௌவநஷாலிந:.
லோகபாலோபமாஸ்ஸர்வே தேவதுல்யபராக்ரமா:৷৷1.72.7৷৷
லோகபாலோபமாஸ்ஸர்வே தேவதுல்யபராக்ரமா:৷৷1.72.7৷৷
இமே these, தஷரதஸ்ய புத்ரா: sons of Dasaratha, ஸர்வே all, ரூபயௌவநஷாலிந: shining with youth and beauty, லோகபாலோபமா: resembling the kings who are the protectors of the worlds, தேவதுல்யபராக்ரமா: equal to devatas in valour.
Bestowed with youth and beauty, these sons of Dasaratha resemble kings in defending the worlds and gods in valour.
உபயோரபி ராஜேந்த்ர ஸம்பந்தேநாநுபத்யதாம்.
இக்ஷ்வாகோ: குலமவ்யக்ரஂ பவத:புண்யகர்மண:৷৷1.72.8৷৷
இக்ஷ்வாகோ: குலமவ்யக்ரஂ பவத:புண்யகர்மண:৷৷1.72.8৷৷
ராஜேந்த்ர O! King, இக்ஷ்வாகோ: Ikshvaku's, புண்யகர்மணஃ of pious deeds, பவத: your, உபயோரபி both of you, குலம் races, ஸம்பந்தேந by this alliance, அந்யக்ரம் with clear vision, அநுபத்யதாம் let it be tied.
O King of kings (Janaka)! the bond between your race with its pious deeds and the Ikshvakus may be strenghthened by this alliance".
விஷ்வாமித்ரவச ஷ்ஷரித்வா வஸிஷ்டஸ்ய மதே ததா.
ஜநக: ப்ராஂஜலிர்வாக்யமுவாச முநிபுங்கவௌ৷৷1.72.9৷৷
ஜநக: ப்ராஂஜலிர்வாக்யமுவாச முநிபுங்கவௌ৷৷1.72.9৷৷
ததா then, வஸிஷ்டஸ்ய Vasistha's, மதே by wish, விஷ்வாமித்ரவச: Viswamitra's words, ஷரித்வா having listened, ஜநக: Janaka, ப்ராஂஜலி: with folded palms, முநிபுங்கவௌ addressing eminent asetics, வாக்யம் words, உவாச spoke.
Having heard the words of Viswamitra which echoed the wish of Vasishta, Janaka replied to the eminent ascetics with folded palms.
குலஂ தந்யமிதஂ மந்யே யேஷாஂ நோ முநிபுங்கவௌ .
ஸதரிஷஂ குலஸம்பந்தஂ யதாஜ்ஞாபயத: ஸ்வயம்৷৷1.72.10৷৷
ஸதரிஷஂ குலஸம்பந்தஂ யதாஜ்ஞாபயத: ஸ்வயம்৷৷1.72.10৷৷
யேஷாம் ந: for those of us, ஸதரிஷஂ befitting, குலஸம்பந்தம் alliance of the two races, முநிபுங்கவௌ two eminent ascetics, ஸ்வயம் on your own, யத் for which reason, ஆஜ்ஞாபயத: are commanding, இதம் this, குலம் race, தந்யம் blessed, மந்யே I consider.
"Since both of you, eminent ascetics, recomended this befitting alliance of the two races on your own, I regard my race as blessed.
ஏவஂ பவது பத்ரஂ வ: குஷத்வஜஸுதே இமே.
பத்ந்யௌ பஜேதாஂ ஸஹிதௌ ஷத்ருக்நபரதாவுபௌ৷৷1.72.11৷৷
பத்ந்யௌ பஜேதாஂ ஸஹிதௌ ஷத்ருக்நபரதாவுபௌ৷৷1.72.11৷৷
ஏவஂ பவது let it be so, வ: பத்ரஂ: prosperity to you, இமே these, குஷத்வஜஸுதே daughters of Kusadhwaja, ஸஹிதௌ together moving, ஷத்ருக்நபரதௌ for Satrughna and Bharata, உபௌ for both of them, பத்ந்யௌ as wives, பஜேதாம் let them serve.
"Let it be so, Be blessed! Let these two daughters of Kusadhwaja (Mandavi and Srutakirti) be the wives of Satrughna and Bharata respectively and serve them.
ஏகாஹ்நா ராஜபுத்ரீணாஂ சதஸரிணாஂ மஹாமுநே!.
பாணீந் கரிஹ்ணந்து சத்வாரோ ராஜபுத்ரா மஹாபலா:৷৷1.72.12৷৷
பாணீந் கரிஹ்ணந்து சத்வாரோ ராஜபுத்ரா மஹாபலா:৷৷1.72.12৷৷
மஹாமுநே O! Great ascetic, மஹாபலா: valiant, சத்வார: four, ராஜபுத்ரா: princes, ஏகாஹ்நா on the same day, சதஸரிணாம் of the four, ராஜபுத்ரீணாம் princesses, பாணீந் hands, கரிஹ்ணந்து let them take.
O Great ascetic! let the valiant four princes take the hands of four princesses on the same day.
உத்தரே திவஸே ப்ரஹ்மந்! பல்குநீப்யாஂ மநீஷிண:.
வைவாஹிகஂ ப்ரஷஂஸந்தி பகோ யத்ர ப்ரஜாபதி:৷৷1.72.13৷৷
வைவாஹிகஂ ப்ரஷஂஸந்தி பகோ யத்ர ப்ரஜாபதி:৷৷1.72.13৷৷
ப்ரஹ்மந் O! Foremost among brahmins, பல்குநீப்யாம் உத்தரே திவஸே on the later day of the ascent of the two Phalgunis (Phalgunis are two sisters. The previous day of the ascent of Phalguni stars, Poorva Phalguni wil be ascendent and the folowing day Uttara Phalguni wil be ascendant ), யத்ர in which day, ப்ரஜாபதி: bestower of children, பக: Bhaga, வைவாஹிகம் to perform marriage, மநீஷிண: wise people, ப்ரஷஂஸந்தி are praising.
"The wise, O Brahmin! think the marriage is favourable when Bhaga is Prajapati on the succeeding day of the ascent of the two stars. (that is, when poorva is followed by uttara phalguni).
ஏவமுக்த்வா வசஸ்ஸௌம்யஂ ப்ரத்யுத்தாய கரிதாஞ்ஜலி:.
உபௌ முநிவரௌ ராஜா ஜநகோ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்৷৷1.72.14৷৷
உபௌ முநிவரௌ ராஜா ஜநகோ வாக்யமப்ரவீத்৷৷1.72.14৷৷
ஜநக: ராஜா king Janaka, ஏவம் thus, ஸௌம்யம் pleasing, வச: words, உக்த்வா having spoken, ப்ரத்யுத்தாய having stood up, கரிதாஞ்ஜலி: with folded hands, உபௌ both, முநிவரௌ great ascetics, வாக்யம் words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
King Janaka, having spoken these pleasing words, stood up and with folded hands addressing both the great ascetics:
பரோ தர்ம: கரிதோ மஹ்யஂ ஷிஷ்யோஸ்மிபவதோ ஸதா.
இமாந்யாஸநமுக்யாநி ஆஸாதாஂ முநிபுங்கவௌ৷৷1.72.15৷৷
இமாந்யாஸநமுக்யாநி ஆஸாதாஂ முநிபுங்கவௌ৷৷1.72.15৷৷
மஹ்யம் for me, பர: supreme, தர்ம: religious merit, கரித: has been done, ஸதா always, பவதோ: for both of you, ஷிஷ்ய: அஸ்மி I am a desciple, முநிபுங்கவௌ eninent ascestics, இமாநி these, ஆஸநமுக்யாநி best of thrones, ஆஸாதாம் occupy.
"You have earned me a great religious merit. I shall be always your disciple O Eminent ascestics, occupy these important seats".
யதா தஷரதஸ்யேயஂ ததாயோத்யா புரீ மம.
ப்ரபுத்வே நாஸ்தி ஸந்தேஹோ யதார்ஹஂ கர்துமர்ஹத৷৷1.72.16৷৷
ப்ரபுத்வே நாஸ்தி ஸந்தேஹோ யதார்ஹஂ கர்துமர்ஹத৷৷1.72.16৷৷
இயம் this Mithila, தஷரதஸ்ய Dasaratha's, யதா as, அயோத்யா புரீ Ayodhya city, மம to me, ததா so it is, ப்ரபுத்வே in the matter of governance, ஸந்தேஹ: doubt, நாஸ்தி not there, யதார்ஹம் appropriately, கர்தும் to do, அர்ஹத behoves of you.
"Dasaratha has right on the city of Ayodhya as much as I have on this. This right is unquestionable. So do whatever you think right".
ததா ப்ருவதி வைதேஹே ஜநகே ரகுநந்தந:.
ராஜா தஷரதோ ஹரிஷ்ட: ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹீபதிம்৷৷1.72.17৷৷
ராஜா தஷரதோ ஹரிஷ்ட: ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹீபதிம்৷৷1.72.17৷৷
வைதேஹே when the king of Videha, ஜநகே Janaka, ததா in that manner, ப்ருவதி while speaking, ரகுநந்தந: descendent of Raghu, ராஜா தஷரத: king Dasaratha, ஹரிஷ்ட: pleased, மஹீபதிம் addressing king Janaka, ப்ரத்யுவாச replied.
To the words of Janaka, king of Videha, king Dasaratha, the descendant of Raghu cheerfully replied:
யுவாமஸங்க்யேயகுணௌ ப்ராதரௌ மிதிலேஷ்வரௌ.
றஷயோ ராஜஸங்காஷ்ச பவத்ப்யாமபிபூஜிதா:৷৷1.72.18৷৷
றஷயோ ராஜஸங்காஷ்ச பவத்ப்யாமபிபூஜிதா:৷৷1.72.18৷৷
மிதிலேஷ்வரௌ lords of Mithila, ப்ராதரௌ brothers, யுவாம் both of you, அஸங்க்யேயகுணௌ have countless virtues, பவத்ப்யாம் by you, றஷய: rishis, ராஜஸங்காஷ்ச hosts of kings, அபிபூஜிதா: have been worshipped.
"You both brothers are lords of Mithila. You possess countless virtues. You pay regards to many rishis and hosts of kings".
ஸ்வஸ்தி ப்ராப்நுஹி பத்ரஂ தே கமிஷ்யாமி ஸ்வமாலயம்.
ஷ்ராத்தகர்மாணி ஸர்வாணி விதாஸ்யாமீதி சாப்ரவீத்৷৷1.72.19৷৷
ஷ்ராத்தகர்மாணி ஸர்வாணி விதாஸ்யாமீதி சாப்ரவீத்৷৷1.72.19৷৷
ஸ்வஸ்தி safety, ப்ராப்நுஹி you may obtain, தே பத்ரம் prosperity to you, ஸ்வம் relating to mine, ஆலயம் residence, கமிஷ்யாமி I shall go, ஸர்வாணி all, ஷ்ராத்தகர்மாணி rites concerning the ceremony in accordance with the rituals, விதாஸ்யாமி ச I shall perform, இதி thus, அப்ரவீத் spoke.
"Be safe. Be blessed. Let me retire to the camp. I have to perform the rites offerings to the forefathers".
தமாபரிஷ்ட்வா நரபதிஂ ராஜா தஷரதஸ்ததா.
முநீந்த்ரௌ தௌ புரஸ்கரித்ய ஜகாமாஷு மஹாயஷா:৷৷1.72.20৷৷
முநீந்த்ரௌ தௌ புரஸ்கரித்ய ஜகாமாஷு மஹாயஷா:৷৷1.72.20৷৷
ததா then, மஹாயஷா: renowned, ராஜா தஷரத: king Dasaratha, தம் that, நரபதிம் king men, ஆபரிஷ்ட்வா having taken leave of, தௌ those two, முநீந்த்ரௌ ascetics, புரஸ்கரித்ய placing them in the fore-front, ஆஷு immediately, ஜகாம went away.
Then renowned king Dasaratha, took leave of the two great ascetics. Then the rowned king Dasaratha took have of the king (Janaka) immediately following the two great ascetics.
ஸ கத்வா நிலயஂ ராஜா ஷ்ராத்தஂ கரித்வா விதாநத:.
ப்ரபாதே கால்யமுத்தாய சக்ரே கோதாநமுத்தமம்৷৷1.72.21৷৷
ப்ரபாதே கால்யமுத்தாய சக்ரே கோதாநமுத்தமம்৷৷1.72.21৷৷
ஸ: that, ராஜா king, நிலயம் residence, கத்வா having gone, விதாநத: according to scriptures, ஷ்ராத்தம் Shraddha ceremony, கரித்வா having performed, ப்ரபாதே at dawn, உத்தாய having risen, கால்யம் appropriate to the time, உத்தமம் excellent, கோதாநம் gifting of cows (a ceremony duly initiating the marriage, vow of Snathaka ), சக்ரே made.
The king (Dasaratha) reached the abode, performed the sharaddha ceremony in accordance with the scriptures. Next day at dawn at appropriate time he gifted away cows (a ceremony performed by initiating the bridegrooms into the marriage.)
கவாஂ ஷதஸஹஸ்ராணி ப்ராஹ்மணேப்யோ நராதிப:.
ஏகைகஷோ ததௌ ராஜா புத்ராநுத்திஷ்ய தர்மத:৷৷1.72.22৷৷
ஏகைகஷோ ததௌ ராஜா புத்ராநுத்திஷ்ய தர்மத:৷৷1.72.22৷৷
நராதிப: lord of men, ராஜா king, புத்ராந் sons, ஏகைகஷ: for each one, உத்திஷ்ய referring to their names, ப்ராஹ்மணேப்ய: for brahmins, கவாம் cows, ஷதஸஹஸ்ராணி in hundred thousands, தர்மத: in accordance with law, ததௌ bestowed.
For the welfare of each of his sons the king (Dasaratha) religiously gave away a hundred thousand cows to brahmins.
ஸுவர்ணஷ்ருங்கா ஸ்ஸம்பந்நா ஸ்ஸவத்ஸா: காஂஸ்யதோஹநா:.
கவாஂ ஷதஸஹஸ்ராணி சத்வாரி புருஷர்ஷப:৷৷1.72.23৷৷
வித்தமந்யச்ச ஸுபஹுத்விஜேப்யோ ரகுநந்தந:.
ததௌ கோதாநமுத்திஷ்ய புத்ராணாஂ புத்ரவத்ஸல:৷৷1.72.24৷৷
கவாஂ ஷதஸஹஸ்ராணி சத்வாரி புருஷர்ஷப:৷৷1.72.23৷৷
வித்தமந்யச்ச ஸுபஹுத்விஜேப்யோ ரகுநந்தந:.
ததௌ கோதாநமுத்திஷ்ய புத்ராணாஂ புத்ரவத்ஸல:৷৷1.72.24৷৷
புருஷர்ஷப: great among men, புத்ரவத்ஸல: affectionate towards his children, ரகுநந்தந: Dasaratha, புத்ராணாம் sons', கோதாநம் gifting away of cows, உத்திஷ்ய with reference to that, ஸுவர்ணஷ்ருங்கா: with their horns plaited with gold, ஸம்பந்நா: endowed with abundance(of milk), ஸவத்ஸா: accompanied by calves, காஂஸ்யதோஹநா: bronze vessels for milking, கவாம் of cows, சத்வாரி four, ஷதஸஹஸ்ராணி a hundred thousand, அந்யத் other, ஸுபஹு innumerable, வித்தம் ச valuables, த்விஜேப்ய: for brahmins, ததௌ bestowed.
Great among men and affectionate towards his children, (king Dasaratha), the delight of the Raghus donated in the name of his sons' donates to the brahmins four hundred thousand cows. They were capable of abundance of milk. Their horns were plaited with gold. They were accompanied by calves. With them were given away bell-metal vessels for keeping milk and innumerable valuables.
ஸ ஸுதை: கரிதகோதாநைர்வரிதஸ்து நரிபதிஸ்ததா.
லோகபாலைரிவாபாதி வரித: ஸ்ஸௌம்ய: ப்ரஜாபதி:৷৷1.72.25৷৷
லோகபாலைரிவாபாதி வரித: ஸ்ஸௌம்ய: ப்ரஜாபதி:৷৷1.72.25৷৷
கரிதகோதாநை: having distributed the cows, ஸுதை: with his sons, வரித: surrounded, ஸ: that, நரிபதி: king, ததா then, லோகபாலை: by guardians of worlds, வரித: surrounded, ஸௌம்ய: pleased, ப்ரஜாபதிரிவ like brahma, ஆபாதி shining.
With his sons for whose sake cows have been given away the cheerful king looked like shining Prajapati surrrounded by the guardians of the world.
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே த்விஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the seventhsecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
