[Rama bends the bow of Visnu--Parasurama returns to Mahendra mountain.]

ஷ்ருத்வா தஜ்ஜாமதக்ந்யஸ்ய வாக்யஂ தாஷரதிஸ்ததா.

கௌரவாத்யஂந்த்ரிதகத: பிதூ ராமமதாப்ரவீத்৷৷1.76.1৷৷

ததா then, தாஷரதி: Rama, ஜமதக்ந்யஸ்ய Parasurama's, (தத்) வாக்யம் words, ஷ்ருத்வா having heard, பிது: father's, கௌரவாத் out of respect, யந்த்ரிதகத: avoiding furthur conversation, அத thereafter, ராமம் addressing Parasurama, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

Hearing the words of the son of Jamadagni (Parasurama), Rama, the son of Dasaratha, avoiding further conversation out of respect for his father intercepted Parasurama saying:

ஷ்ருதவாநஸ்மி யத்கர்ம கரிதவாநஸி பார்கவ!.

அநுருஂத்யாமஹே ப்ரஹ்மந் பிதுராநரிண்யமாஸ்திதம்৷৷1.76.2৷৷

பார்கவ! O! Bhrigu's son, Parasurama, யத் which, கர்ம acts, கரிதவாநஸி you have done, ஷ்ருதவாந் அஸ்மி I have listened, ப்ரஹ்மந் O! Brahman, பிதுஃ to your father, ஆநரிண்யம் repaying the debt, ஆஸ்திதம் obtained, அநுருந்த்யாமஹே we will commend.

"O Descendant of Bhrigu! I have listened to the (marvellous) acts you have performed. O Brahman! I commend you for discharging your duty in repaying the debt to your father.

வீர்யஹீநமிவாஷக்தஂ க்ஷத்ரதர்மேண பார்கவ!.

அவஜாநாஸி மே தேஜ: பஷ்ய மேத்ய பராக்ரமம்৷৷1.76.3৷৷

பார்கவ! O! Descendant of Bhrugu, வீர்யஹீநமிவ as if I am without valour, க்ஷத்ரதர்மேண by duties of Kshatriya, அஷக்தமிவ as though incompetant, அவஜாநாஸி you are insulting me, அத்ய today, மே my, தேஜ: energy, பராக்ரமம் valour, பஷ்ய you may witness.

You underrate me O Bhargava! as though I am devoid of valour and incompetent to perform the duties of a Kshatriya. Now witness my energy and valour.

இத்யுக்த்வா ராகவ: க்ருத்தோ பார்கவஸ்ய ஷராஸநம்.

ஷரஂ ச ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ ஹஸ்தால்லகுபராக்ரம:৷৷1.76.4৷৷

லகுபராக்ரம: with quick vigour, ராகவ: Rama, க்ருத்த: enraged, இதி உக்த்வா having thus spoken, பார்கவஸ்ய from Parasurama's, ஹஸ்தாத் hand, ஷராஸநம் bow, ஷரஂ ச also an arrow, ப்ரதிஜக்ராஹ grasped (pulled).

Having spoken thus, the enraged Rama, gifted with quick vigour, seized the bow and arrow from Parasurama's hands.

ஆரோப்ய ஸ தநூ ராம ஷ்ஷரஂ ஸஜ்யஂ சகார ஹ.

ஜாமதக்ந்யஂ ததோ ராமஂ ராம: க்ருத்தோப்ரவீத்வச:৷৷1.76.5৷৷

ஸ: that, ராம: Rama, தநு: bow, ஆரோப்ய bending it, ஷரம் arrow, ஸஜ்யம் stretching the string, சகார performed, ராம: Rama, தத: thereafter, க்ருத்த: enraged, ஜாமதக்ந்யஂ son of Jamadagni, ராமம் Parasurama, வச: words, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

Infuriated Rama bent the bow stretched it, fixed the arrow and addressed Parasurama, the son of Jamadagni:

ப்ராஹ்மணோஸீதி பூஜ்யோ மே விஷ்வாமித்ரகரிதேந ச.

தஸ்மாச்சக்தோ ந தே ராம மோக்துஂ ப்ராணஹரஂ ஷரம்৷৷1.76.6৷৷

ராம O! Parasurama, ப்ராஹ்மண: அஸி you are a brahmin, இதி for this reason, விஷ்வாமித்ரகரிதேந through Visvamitra, மே for me, பூஜ்ய: worthy of homage, தஸ்மாத் for that reason, தே your, ப்ராணஹரணம் life taking, ஷரம் arrow, மோக்தும் to release,ந ஷக்த: I am not competent.

"You are a brahmin, O Parasurama. You are also related to Viswamitra. Hence you are worthy of homage. I cannot, therefore, release this against you to take your life.

இமாஂ பாதகதிஂ ராம! தபோபலஸமார்ஜிதாம்.

லோகாநப்ரதிமாந்வா தே ஹநிஷ்யாமி யதிச்சஸி ৷৷1.76.7৷৷

ராம O! Parasurama, தே your, இமாம் this, பாதகதிம் movement of your feet, தபோபலஸமார்ஜிதாம் earned through asceteic energy, அப்ரதிமாந் incomparable, லோகாந் வா worlds, ஹநிஷ்யாமி I shall destroy, யத் whichever, இச்சஸி you are desiring, tell me.

I shall destroy your mobility, O Parasurama! or the higher worlds earned through your matchless asceteic energy. Tell me which one you choose.

ந ஹ்யயஂ வைஷ்ணவோ திவ்ய ஷ்ஷர: பரபுரஞ்ஜய:.

மோக: பததி வீர்யேண பலதர்பவிநாஷநஃ৷৷1.76.8৷৷

பரபுரஞ்ஜய: conquering hostile cities, வீர்யேண by prowess, பலதர்பவிநாஷந: destroyer of the pride and strength, திவ்ய: celestial, அயம் this, வைஷ்ணவ: ஷர: arrow of Vishnu, மோக: vain, ந பததி ஹி shall not fall.

On conquering the hostile cities and destroying the pride and strength of the enemy
by its prowess, this celestial arrow of Visnu shall not go in vain".

வராயுததரஂ ராமஂ த்ரஷ்டுஂ ஸர்ஷிகணா ஸ்ஸுரா:.

பிதாமஹஂ புரஸ்கரித்ய ஸமேதாஸ்தத்ர ஸங்கஷ:৷৷1.76.9৷৷

கந்தர்வாப்ஸரஸஷ்சைவ ஸித்தசாரணகிந்நரா:.

யக்ஷராக்ஷஸநாகாஷ்ச தத்த்ரஷ்டுஂ மஹதத்புதம்৷৷1.76.10৷৷

வராயுததரம் holding that mighty weapon, ராமம் Rama, த்ரஷ்டும் to behold, ஸர்ஷிகணா: accompanied by sages, ஸுரா: devatas, பிதாமஹம் grand-sire, புரஸ்கரித்ய keeping in forefront, தத்ர there, ஸங்கஷ: in groups, ஸமேதா: assembled, கந்தர்வாப்ஸரஸஷ்சைவ gandharvas and apsaras, ஸித்தசாரணகிந்நரா: siddhas, charanas, kinnaras, யக்ஷராக்ஷஸநாகாஷ்ச yakshas, rakshsas, nagas, தத் that, மஹத் great, அத்புதம் wonder, த்ரஷ்டும் to see (came).

The gods with the Grandsire, Brahma in the forefront, accompanied by sages in groups assembled there to see Rama holding that mighty bow. Gandharvas, apsaras, siddhas, charanas, kinnaras, yakshas, rakshsas and nagas also came there to witness that great wonder.

ஜடீகரிதே ததாலோகே ராமே வரதநுர்தரே.

நிர்வீர்யோ ஜாமதக்ந்யோஸௌ ராமோ ராமமுதைக்ஷத৷৷.1.76.11৷৷

ததா then, ராமே when Rama, வரதநுர்தரே was bearing that excellent bow, லோகே world, ஜடீகரிதே having been made motionless, அஸௌ this, ஜாமதக்நய: son of Jamadagni, ராம: Parasurama, நிர்வீர்ய: bereft of prowess, ராமம் Rama, உதைக்ஷத gazed at him.

Then when Rama stretched the great bow, the world became motionless. The son of Jamadagni, Parasurama, bereft of prowess gazed at him with astonishment.

தேஜோபிஹதவீர்யத்வாஜ்ஜாமதக்ந்யோ ஜடீகரித:.

ராமஂ கமலபத்ராக்ஷஂ மந்தஂ மந்தமுவாச ஹ৷৷1.76.12৷৷

தேஜோபி: ஹதவீர்யத்வாத் having been subdued of his energy by the prowess of Rama, ஜடீகரித: having been made motionless, ஜாமதக்ந்ய: son of Jamadagni, கமலபத்ராக்ஷம் him whose eyes resembling lotus petals, ராமம் Rama, மந்தஂ மந்தம் slowly, slowly, உவாச ஹ spoke.

His energy subdued by Rama's prowess, the paralysed, Parasurama, son of Jamadagni spoke in gentle words to him whose eyes resembled the lotus petals:

காஷ்யபாய மயா தத்தா யதா பூர்வஂ வஸுந்தரா.

விஷயே மே ந வஸ்தவ்யமிதி மாஂ காஷ்யபோப்ரவீத்৷৷1.76.13৷৷

பூர்வம் formerly, வஸுந்தரா earth, யதா when, மயா by me, காஷ்யபாய for Kasyapa, தத்தா was given, மே my, விஷயே in my country, ந வஸ்தவ்யம் இதி shall not live, மாம் me, காஷ்யப: Kasyapa, அப்ரவீத் spoke.

"When I gave this entire earth to Kasyapa, he said to me, 'you shall not live in my country'.

ஸோஹஂ குருவச: குர்வந் பரிதிவ்யாஂ ந வஸே நிஷாம்.

கரிதா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா காகுத்ஸ்த! கரிதா பூ: காஷ்யபஸ்ய ஹி৷৷1.76.14৷৷

ஸஃ அஹம் such I, குருவச: words of my spiritual guide, குர்வந் following, பரிதிவ்யாம் on this earth, நிஷாம் during night, ந வஸே I will not live, காகுஸ்த்த! O! Rama, ப்ரதிஜ்ஞா vow, கரிதா has been made, பூ: earth, காஷ்யபஸ்ய for Kasyapa, கரிதா ஹி has been given.

O Descendant of Kakustha! having gifted this earth to Kasyapa, I promised him that I would not live here, during night time. For the earth belongs to him.

ததிமாஂ த்வஂ கதிஂ வீர ஹந்துஂ நார்ஹஸி ராகவ.

மநோஜவஂ கமிஷ்யாமி மஹேந்த்ரஂ பர்வதோத்தமம்৷৷1.76.15৷৷

வீர O! Valourous one, ராகவ Rama, தத் for that reason, த்வம் you, இமாம் this, கதிம் power of motion, ஹந்தும் to destroy, நார்ஹஸி is not fit, மநோஜவம் with the speed of mind, மஹேஂத்ரம் Mahendra mountain, பர்வதோத்தமம் best of hills, கமிஷ்யாமி I shall go.

For this, you should not destroy my mobility, O valiant son of the Raghus!. I shall go to Mahendra, the best of mountains, with the speed of mind.

லோகாஸ்த்வப்ரதிமா ராம நிர்ஜிதாஸ்தபஸா மயா .

ஜஹி தாந் ஷரமுக்யேந மா பூத்காலஸ்ய பர்யய:৷৷1.76.16৷৷

ராம O! Rama, மயா by me, அப்ரதிமா: unrivalled, லோகா: worlds, தபஸா by asceticism, நிர்ஜிதா: have been conquered, தாந் them, ஷரமுக்யேந with this chief of arrows, ஜஹி strike, காலஸ்ய time, பர்யய: delay, மாபூத் let not happen.

Strike with the, principal arrow the unrivalled worlds conquered by my asceticism. Do not delay, O Rama!

அக்ஷய்யஂ மதுஹந்தாரஂ ஜாநாமி த்வாஂ ஸுரேஷ்வரம்.

தநுஷோஸ்ய பராமர்ஷாத் ஸ்வஸ்தி தேஸ்து பரஂதப!৷৷1.76.17৷৷

அஸ்ய this, தநுஷ: bow's, பராமர்ஷாத் from stretching, த்வாம் you, அக்ஷய்யம் imperishable one, ஸுரேஷ்வரம் lord of devatas, மதுஹந்தாரம் Visnu, the slayer of Madhu, ஜாநாமி I know, பரஂதப! tormentor of enemies, தே ஸ்வஸ்தி அஸ்து safety to you.

By the fact that you have stretched this bow, I have come to know that you are Visnu, Lord of the gods, slayer of Madhu, O Imperishable one! O Tormentor of enemies! Fare well.

ஏதே ஸுரகணாஸ்ஸர்வே நிரீக்ஷந்தே ஸமாகதா:.

த்வாமப்ரதிமகர்மாணமப்ரதித்வந்த்வமாஹவே৷৷1.76.18৷৷

ஸமாகதா: assembled, ஏதே these, ஸர்வே all, ஸுரகணா: hosts of devatas, அப்ரதிமகர்மாணம் of incomparable deeds, ஆஹவே in the combat, அப்ரதித்வந்த்வம் unassailable, த்வாம் you, நிரீக்ஷந்தே are looking at.

All your deeds are incomparable. You are unassailable in combat. All these hosts of gods have assembled here and are looking at you.

ந சேயஂ மம காகுத்ஸ்த! வ்ரீடா பவிதுமர்ஹதி.

த்வயா த்ரைலோக்யநாதேந யதஹஂ விமுகீகரித:৷৷1.76.19৷৷

காகுத்ஸ்த! O! Rama, த்ரைலோக்யநாதேந by the lord of three worlds, த்வயா by you, அஹம் I, யத் that (I am), விமுகீகரித: have been defeated, இயம் this one, மே to me, வ்ரீடா shame, பவிதும் to become, ந அர்ஹதி does not behove.

I have been defeated by you, O Descendant of Kakustha! lord of the three worlds. Therefore, it is not right for me to feel ashamed.

ஷரமப்ரதிமஂ ராம! மோக்துமர்ஹஸி ஸுவ்ரத!.

ஷரமோக்ஷே கமிஷ்யாமி மஹேந்த்ரஂ பர்வதோத்தமம்৷৷1.76.20৷৷

ஸுவ்ரத! one faithful to vows, ராம Rama, அப்ரதிமம் incomparable, ஷரம் arrow, மோக்தும் to release, அர்ஹஸி behoves of you, ஷரமோக்ஷே after release of the arrow, பர்வதோத்தமம் excellent of mountains, மஹேந்த்ரம் Mahendra, கமிஷ்யாமி I shall go.

You are faithful to vows O Rama! This arrow has no equal in prowess. It behoves of you to release it against me. After its release I shall go to the excellent Mahendra mountain".

ததா ப்ருவதி ராமே து ஜாமதக்நயே ப்ரதாபவாந்.

ராமோ தாஷரதி ஷ்ஷ்ரீமாந் சிக்ஷேப ஷரமுத்தமம்৷৷1.76.21৷৷

ஜாமதக்நயே when the son of Jamadagni, ராமே Parasurama, ததா in that way, ப்ருவதி was saying, ப்ரதாபவாந் valiant, தாஷரதி: son of Dasaratha, ராம: Rama, உத்தமம் excellent, ஷரம் arrow, சிக்ஷேப employed.

Thus spoke Parasurama, son of Jamadagni to Rama, the valiant son of Dasaratha who (then) discharged the principal arrow.

ஸ ஹதாந் தரிஷ்ய ராமேண ஸ்வாஂல்லோகாஂஸ்தபஸார்ஜிதாந்.

ஜாமதக்ந்யோ ஜகாமாஷு மஹேந்த்ரஂ பர்வதோத்தமம்৷৷1.76.22৷৷

ஸ: that, ஜாமதக்ந்ய: Parasurama, தபஸா by asceticism, அர்ஜிதாந் earned, ஸ்வாந் his own, லோகாந் worlds, ராமேண by Rama, ஹதாந் struck, தரிஷ்ய having seen, ஆஷு speedily, பர்வதோத்தமம் excellent among mountains, மஹேந்த்ரம் Mahendra, ஜகாம went.

Having witnessed the destruction of those regions earned by him through asceticism, the son of Jamadagni left for the best of mountains Mahendra.

ததோ விதிமிராஸ்ஸர்வா திஷஷ்சோபதிஷஸ்ததா.

ஸுரா ஸ்ஸர்ஷிகணா ராமஂ ப்ரஷஷஂஸுருதாயுதம்৷৷1.76.23৷৷

தத: thereafter, ஸர்வா all, திஷ: quarters, ததா also, உபதிஷ: intermediate quarters, விதிமிரா: were cleared of darkness, ஸர்ஷிகணா: hosts of sages, ஸுரா: devatas, உதாயுதம் wielding that bow, ராமம் Rama, ப்ரஷஷஂஸு: extolled.

Thereafter all the quarters including the intermediaries were cleared of darkness. Hosts of sages and gods extolled Rama when he wielded the bow.

ராமஂ தாஷரதிஂ ராமோ ஜாமதக்ந்ய: ப்ரஷஸ்ய ச.

தத: ப்ரதக்ஷிணீ கரித்ய ஜகாமாத்மகதிஂ ப்ரபு:৷৷1.76.24৷৷

ப்ரபு: competent, ஜாமதக்ந்ய: son of Jamadagni, ராம: Parasurama, தாஷரதிம் son of Dasaratha, ராமம் Rama, ப்ரஷஸ்ய ச having praised, தத: then, ப்ரதக்ஷிணீகரித்ய having circumambulated him, ஆத்மகதிம் to his own abode, ஜகாம went.

Parasurama, the competent son of Jamadagni, having praised Rama, the son of
Dasaratha circumbulated him and left for his abode.
இத்யார்ஷே ஷ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீய ஆதிகாவ்யே பாலகாண்டே ஷட்ஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க:৷৷
Thus ends the seventysixth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
