[Vasishta orders Kamadhenu to create things necessary for the hospitality to king Viswamitra.]

स दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीतो विश्वामित्रो महाबल:।

प्रणतो विनयाद्वीरो वसिष्ठं जपतां वरम्।।1.52.1।।


महाबल: very mighty, वीर: heroic, स: विश्वामित्र: that Visvamitra, जपताम् वरम् greatest among those performing religious prayers, वसिष्ठम् Vasishta, दृष्ट्वा having seen, परमप्रीत: exceedingly happy, विनयात् out of respect, प्रणत: offered respectful salutations.

Overwhelmed with joy the mighty, heroic Viswamitra upon seeing Vasishta, the greatest among ascetics, was and offered respectful salutations.
स्वागतं तव चेत्युक्तो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना।

आसनं चास्य भगवान् वसिष्ठो व्यादिदेश ह।।1.52.2।।


तव to you, स्वागतम् इति welcome (saying so), महात्मना by the magnanimous, वसिष्ठेन by Vasishta, उक्तश्च spoken also, भगवान् adorable, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, अस्य for him, आसनं च seat also, व्यादिदेश ह ordered.

Adorable Vasishta received Viswamitra with words of welcome and ordered a seat for him.
उपविष्टाय च तदा विश्वामित्राय धीमते।

यथान्यायं मुनिवर: फलमूलमुपाहरत्।।1.52.3।।


तदा then, मुनिवर: excellent of ascetics, उपविष्टाय having seated, धीमते sagacious, विश्वामित्राय for Visvamitra, यथान्यायम् in accordance with tradition, फलमूलम् fruits and roots, उपाहरत् offered.

With the sagacious Viswamitra seated the great ascetic, duly offered him fruits and roots.
प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजां वसिष्ठाद्राजसत्तम:।

तपोग्निहोत्रशिष्येषु कुशलं पर्यपृच्छत।।1.52.4।।

विश्वामित्रो महातेजा वनस्पतिगणे तथा ।

सर्वत्र कुशलं चाह वसिष्ठो राजसत्तमम्।।1.52.5।।


राजसत्तम: foremost among kings, महातेजा: highly splendrous, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, वसिष्ठात् from Vasishta, ताम् पूजाम् that hospitality, प्रतिगृह्य having received, तपोग्निहोत्रशिष्येषु with regard to his austerities, his firesacrifices and his disciples, तथा and, वनस्पतिगणे trees (in his hermitage), कुशलम् welfare, पर्यपृच्छत enquired, वसिष्ठ: च Vasishta also, सर्वत्र in all of them, कुशलम् welfare, राजसत्तमम् for the best of kings, आह informed.

Foremost among kings, the brilliant Viswamitra, having received hospitality from Vasishta, enquired about his welbeing his austerities, his firesacrifices, his disciples and trees (in his hermitage). Vasishta, too, informed him of the welfare of all.
सुखोपविष्टं राजानं विश्वामित्रं महातपा:।

पप्रच्छ जपतां श्रेष्ठो वसिष्ठो ब्रह्मणस्सुत:।।1.52.6।।


जपताम् among those performing religious prayers, श्रेष्ठ: greatest, महातपा: possessing great asceticism, ब्रह्मण: Brahma's, सुत: son, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, सुखोपविष्टम् sitting at ease, राजानम् king, विश्वामित्रम् Visvamitra,पप्रच्छ enquired.

Vasishta, son of Brahma, the greatest among those who recite prayers and possess rich asceticism enquired of king Viswamitra comfortably seated (before him):
कच्चित्ते कुशलं राजन् कच्चिद्धर्मेण रञ्जयन्।

प्रजा: पालयसे वीर राजवृत्तेन धार्मिक।।1.52.7।।


राजन् O King, ते कुशलम् कच्चित् is it well with you?, धार्मिक O Righteous one, वीर O Heroic one, प्रजा: subjects, धर्मेण conforming to morality, रञ्जयन् delighting, राजवृत्तेन in accordance with the duties enjoined upon the king, पालयसे कच्चित् are you ruling?

"O King, is it all well with you? O righteous one O heroic one are you ruling (your subjects) in accordance with the duties enjoined upon the king? Do you rule them in conformity with the code of moralit in order to make them happy.
कच्चित्ते सम्भृता भृत्या: कच्चित्तिष्ठन्ति शासने।

कच्चित्ते विजितास्सर्वे रिपवो रिपुसूदन ।।1.52.8।।


कच्चित् whether, ते your, भृत्या: servants, सम्भृता: are well provided? शासने in your commands, तिष्ठन्ति abide?, रिपुसूदन O Destroyer of foes, ते your, रिपव: foes, सर्वे all, विजिता: have been conquered.

Are your servants provided well with their requirements? Do they abide by your command? O Destroyer of foes have all your enemies been conquered ?
कच्चिद्बलेषु कोशेषु मित्रेषु च परन्तप।

कुशलं ते नरव्याघ्र पुत्रपौत्रे तवानघ ।।1.52.9।।


कच्चित् whether, परन्तप O Tormentor of enemies, अनघ O Sinless one, नरव्याघ्र O Tiger (best) among men, बलेषु in your army, कोशेषु in your treasury, मित्रेषु in your friends, तव your, पुत्रपौत्रे sons and grandsons, ते कुशलम् is it well with you?

O Tormentor of enemies O Sinless one O Tiger among men is it all well with your army, treasury, friends, sons and grandsons?
सर्वत्र कुशलं राजा वसिष्ठं प्रत्युदाहरत्।

विश्वामित्रो महातेजा वसिष्ठं विनयान्वित:।।1.52.10।।


महातेजा: highly lustrous, राजा king, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, वसिष्ठम् Vasishta, विनयान्वित: with great discipline, वसिष्ठम् प्रति addressing Vasishta, सर्वत्र all that, कुशलम् welfare, उदाहरत् conveyed.

Highly brilliant king Viswamitra, humbly informed Vasishta that all was well.
कृत्वोभौ सुचिरं कालं धर्मिष्ठौ ता: कथा: शुभा:।

मुदा परमया युक्तौ प्रीयेतां तौ परस्परम्।।1.52.11।।


धर्मिष्ठौ virtuous, तौ उभौ both of them, परमया with great, मुदा delight, युक्तौ abosrbed, सुचिरम् कालम् for a long time, शुभा: auspicious, ता: कथा: anecedotes relating to various matters, कृत्वा having made, परस्परम् each other, प्रीयेताम् were pleased.

Both the righteous personalities dwelt at length on various matters and interesting anecdotes with great delight and derived mutual pleasure.
ततो वसिष्ठो भगवान् कथाऽन्ते रघुनन्दन ।

विश्वामित्रमिदं वाक्यमुवाच प्रहसन्निव।।1.52.12।।


रघुनन्दन O Descendent of Raghu, तत: then, भगवान् venerable, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, कथाऽन्ते after the conversation had ended, प्रहसन्निव smiling as it were, विश्वामित्रम् addressing Viswamitra, इदं this, वाक्यम् word, उवाच spoke.

O Descendent of Raghu at the end of the conversation, venerable Vasishta, smiling as
it were said to Viswamitra
आतिथ्यं कर्तुमिच्छामि बलस्यास्य महाबल ।

तव चैवाप्रमेयस्य यथार्हं सम्प्रतीच्छ मे।।1.52.13।।


महाबल O Highly powerful, अस्य of this, बलस्य for army, अप्रमेयस्य incomparable, तव चैव to you as well, यथार्हम् in an appropriate manner, आतिथ्यम् hospitality, कर्तुम् to offer, इच्छामि I am desirous, मे from me, सम्प्रतीच्छ you may accept.

O Highy powerful Viswamitra I wish to offer appropriate hospitality to you and to your incomparable army. Be pleased to accept it.
सत्क्रियां तु भवानेतां प्रतीच्छतु मयोद्यताम्।

राजा त्वमतिथिश्रेष्ठ: पूजनीय: प्रयत्नत:।।1.52.14।।


भवान् you, मया by me, उद्यताम् extended, सत्क्रियाम् honours, प्रतीच्छतु accept, राजा king, त्वम् you, प्रयत्नत: through every effort, पूजनीय: worthy of, अतिथिश्रेष्ठ: distinguished guest.

Please accept the honour I extend. Being a king, you are a distinguished guest. you deserve to be treated respectfully in all possible ways".
एवमुक्तो वसिष्ठेन विश्वामित्रो महामति:।

कृतमित्यब्रवीद्राजा प्रियवाक्येन मे त्वया।।1.52.15।।


वसिष्ठेन by Vasishta, एवम् in this manner, उक्त: spoken, महामति: greatminded, राजा king, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, त्वया by you, प्रियवाक्येन with pleasing words, कृतम् इति hospitality has been extended, मे to me, अब्रवीत् spoke.

To these words of Vasishta, the great intellectual Viswamitra said, "you have spoken pleasing words. This in itself is hospitality for me".
फलमूलेन भगवन् विद्यते यत्तवाश्रमे।

पाद्येनाचमनीयेन भगवद्दर्शनेन च।।1.52.16।।

सर्वथा च महाप्राज्ञ पूजार्हेण सुपूजित:।

गमिष्यामि नमस्तेऽस्तु मैत्रेणेक्षस्व चक्षुषा।।1.52.17।।


भगवन् O Worshipful one, यत् which, तव your, आश्रमे in the hermitage, विद्यते is available, फलमूलेन with fruits and roots, पाद्येन with the water for washing feet, आचमनीयेन च with water for sipping, भगवद्दर्शनेन by meeting your revered self, पूजार्हेण worthy of homage, सर्वथा in all ways, सुपूजित: excellently honoured, महाप्राज्ञ O Profoundly wise one, गमिष्यामि I shall go, ते नम: अस्तु reverence to you, मैत्रेण filled with friendship, चक्षुषा with eyes, ईक्षस्व look upon me.

"O Worshipful one O Profoundly wise one you are worthy of homage. You have excellently honoured me in all possible ways with whatever fruits and roots available in your hermitage, with water for washing feet and for sipping. You have permitted me darshan with your revered self. I shall leave (now). My regards Look upon me with eyes of friendship".
एवं ब्रुवन्तं राजानं वसिष्ठ:पुनरेव हि।

न्यमन्त्रयत धर्मात्मा पुन:पुनरुदारधी:।।1.52.18।।


एवम् in this way, ब्रुवन्तम् speaking, राजानम् king, धर्मात्मा righteous minded, उदारधी: sagacious, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, पुनरेव in return, पुन: पुन: again and again, न्यमन्त्रयत implored.

As the king was addressing thus the righteous and generous Vasishta, repeatedly requested him to accept his hospitality.
बाढमित्येव गाधेयो वसिष्ठं प्रत्युवाच ह।

यथा प्रियं भगवतस्तथाऽस्तु मुनिपुङ्गव।।1.52.19।।


गाधेय: the son of Gadhi, वसिष्ठम् addressing Vashishta, मुनिपुङ्गव O Preeminent among sages, बाढम् be it so, भगवत: venerable, यथा in whatever way, प्रियं (अभिमतम्) desire, तथा अस्तु let it be done in that way.

The son of Gadhi said to Vasishta, "O Preeminent among sages, be it so, O venerable one they will be done".
एवमुक्तो महातेजा वसिष्ठो जपतां वर:।

आजुहाव तत: प्रीत: कल्माषीं धूतकल्मष:।।1.52.20।।


महातेजा: highly splendrous, जपतां वर: greatest among those who perform religious meditation, धूतकल्मष: free from sins, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, प्रीत: pleased, तत: thereafter, कल्माषीम् the speckled cow, आजुहाव called.

Vasishta who was highly brilliant the greatest among those who meditate (on Brahman) and free from sins was pleased. Thereafter he called the speckled cow (Kamadhenu):
एह्येहि शबले क्षिप्रं श्रृणु चापि वचो मम।

सबलस्यास्य राजर्षे:कर्तुं व्यवसितोऽस्म्यहम्।।1.52.21।।

भोजनेन महार्हेण सत्कारं संविधत्स्व मे।


शबले O Sabala, क्षिप्रम् quickly, एहि (एहि) come on, मम my, वच: words, श्रृणु च अपि also listen, अहम् I, महार्हेण in a befitting manner, भोजनेन with food, अस्य राजर्षे: for this royal saint, सबलस्य together with his army, सत्कारम् honour, कर्तुम् to extend, व्यवसित: अस्मि I have decided, मे to me, संविधत्स्व make arrangemets.

"O Sabala, come on quick Listen to my words. I have decided to honour this royal saint and his army with excellent food. Make necessary arrangemets.
यस्य यस्य यथाकामं षड्रसेष्वभिपूजितम्।

तत्सर्वं कामधुक्क्षिप्रमभिवर्ष कृते मम।।1.52.22।।


कामधुक् O Kamadhenu, यस्य यस्य to whom so ever, षड्रसेषु among six kinds of tastes, अभिपूजितम् which is desired, तत्सर्वम् all that, यथाकामम् in a manner desired, मम कृते for my sake, क्षिप्रम् quickly, अभिवर्ष rained (grant).

O Kamadhenu quickly entertain them for my sake with the food of six kinds of tastes (varieties of rich dishes) as desired by each.
रसेनान्नेन पानेन लेह्यचोष्येण संयुतम्।

अन्नानां निचयं सर्वं सृजस्व शबले त्वर।।1.52.23।।


शबले O Sabala, in the form of liquid, अन्नेन with solid food, रसेन पानेन with liquids which can be drunk, लेह्यचोष्येण which can be licked and sipped, संयुतम् endowed with, सर्वम् all that, अन्नानां of the food items, निचयम् in collecion, सृजस्व create, त्वर hasten.

O Sabala create at once all food items consisting of liquids and solids for drinking, tasting and siping."
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे द्विपञ्चाशस्सर्ग:।
Thus ends the fiftysecond sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
