[Satananda completes his narration of how Viswamitra attains Brahmarshi status.]

अथ हैमवतीं राम दिशं त्यक्त्वा महामुनि:।

पूर्वां दिशमनुप्राप्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम्।।1.65.1।।


राम O Rama, अथ thereafter, महामुनि: great ascetic Visvamitra, हैमवतीम् relating to Himavat mountain, दिशम् quarter, त्यक्त्वा abandoning, पूर्वां दिशम् eastern quarter, अनुप्राप्य having reached, सुदारुणम् rigorous, तप: austerities, तेपे performed.

"O Rama thereafter the great ascetic (Viswamitra), abandoning the north of the Himavat mountain reached the eastern quarter and performed rigorous austerities.
मौनं वर्षसहस्रस्य कृत्वा व्रतमनुत्तमम्।

चकाराप्रतिमं राम तप: परमदुष्करम्।।1.65.2।।


राम O Rama, वर्षसहस्रस्य for a thousand years, अनुत्तमम् immense, मौनं व्रतं vow of silence, कृत्वा having observed, अप्रतिमम् unprecedented, परमदुष्करम् extremely difficult, तप: austerities, चकार practised.

Having observed a unique vow of silence for a thousand years, O Rama he practised unprecedented and extremely difficult austerities.
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु काष्ठभूतं महामुनिम्।

विघ्नैर्बहुभिराधूतं क्रोधो नान्तर आविशत्।।1.65.3।।

स कृत्वा निश्चयं राम तप आतिष्टदव्ययम्।


वर्षसहस्रे when thousand years, पूर्णे were completed, काष्ठभूतम् almost like a piece of wood, महामुनिम् mighty ascetic, बहुभि: several, विघ्नै: with impediments, आधूतम् unshaken, क्रोध: anger, अन्तरे in his mind, न आविशत् did not enter, राम O Rama, स: he, निश्चयम् determination, कृत्वा having made, अव्ययम् immense, तप: austerities, आतिष्ठत् practised.

After completion of a thousand years the great ascetic became a piece of wood. In spite of many impediments, he was unshaken, anger did not enter into his mind. O Rama with firm determination he practised austerities.
तस्य वर्षसहस्रस्य व्रते पूर्णे महाव्रत:।।1.65.4।।

भोक्तुमारब्धवानन्नं तस्मिन् काले रघूत्तम।

इन्द्रो द्विजातिर्भूत्वा तं सिद्धमन्नमयाचत।।1.65.5।।


रघूत्तम O Rama, तस्य for him, वर्षसहस्रस्य of a thousand years, व्रते when the vow, पूर्णे had been completed, महाव्रत: one rigidly observing vows, अन्नम् cooked rice, भोक्तुम् to partake, आरब्धवान् commenced, तस्मिन् काले that moment, इन्द्र: Indra, द्विजाति: भूत्वा assuming the guise of a brahmin, तम् him, सिद्धम् cooked and set ready for consumption, अन्नम् rice, अयाचत asked.

O Best of Raghus dynasty (Rama) when the thousandyearold vow was over (Viswamitra) the great practitioner of vows began to partake cooked rice. At this moment Indra assumed the guise of a brahmin and asked him for the rice (he was going to eat).
तस्मै दत्वा तदा सिद्धं सर्वं विप्राय निश्चित:।

निश्शेषितेऽन्ने भगवानभुक्तैव महातपा:।।1.65.6।।

न किञ्चिदवदद्विप्रं मौनव्रतमुपस्थित:।

अथ वर्षसहस्रं वै नोच्छ्वसन्मुनिपुङ्गव:।।1.65.7।।


भगवान् adorable, महातपा: mighty ascetic, मौनव्रतम् vow of silence, उपास्थित: having adopted, निश्चित: firmly determined, तदा then, सिद्धम् kept ready, सर्वम् all that rice, तस्मै विप्राय for that Brahmin, दत्वा having given, अन्ने when the cooked rice, निश्शेषिते without remainder was consumed, अभुक्तैव without eating food, विप्रम् brahmin, किञ्चित् little, न अवदत् did not utter a word, अथ thereafter, मुनिपुङ्गव: best of ascetics, वर्षसहस्रं thousand years, नोच्छ्वसत् did not breathe.

This mighty, adorable ascetic having adopted a vow of silence decided to give all the cooked rice to the Brahmin. The brahmin finished all the rice. Viswamitra went without food but did not utter a single word to the brahmin. Thereafter the distinguished ascetic practised austerities for another period of thousand years, his breath suspended.
तस्यानुच्छ्वसमानस्य मूर्ध्नि धूमो व्यजायत।

त्रैलोक्यं येन सम्भ्रान्तमादीपितमिवाभवत्।।1.65.8।।


अनुच्छ्वसमानस्य while he was suspending his breath, तस्य Visvamitra's, मूर्ध्नि on his head, धूम: smoke, व्यजायत emanated, येन by which, त्रैलोक्यम् three worlds, सम्भ्रान्तम् agitated, आदीपितमिव अभवत् was as thoughset on fire.

While his breath, was suspended, smoke emanated from his head which frightened the three worlds. It appeared as though they were on fire.
ततो देवास्सगन्धर्वा: पन्नगोरगराक्षसा:।

मोहितास्तेजसा तस्य तपसा मन्दरश्मय:।।1.65.9।।

कश्मलोपहता स्सर्वे पितामहमथाब्रुवन्।


तत: thereupon, देवा: devatas, सगन्धर्वा: along with gandharvas, पन्नगोरगरराक्षसा: pannagas, uragas, rakshasas, तस्य his, तेजसा by ascetic energy, मोहिता: bewildered, तपसा by his penance, मन्दरश्मय: with dimmed glory, कश्मलोपहता: afflicted with anguish, अथ thereafter, सर्वे all, पितामहम् addressing grandsire, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Thereupon devatas along with gandharvas, pannagas, uragas, and rakshasas, stood bewildered by his ascetic energy. Their own glory was dimmed in his lustre". Afflicted with anguish, they spoke to the Grandsire (Brahma):
बहुभि: कारणैर्देव विश्वामित्रो महामुनि:।।1.65.10।।

लोभित: क्रोधितश्चैव तपसा चाभिवर्धते।


देव O Divine lord, महामुनि: great ascetic, विश्वामित्र: Visvamitra, बहुभि: with various, कारणै: by reasons, लोभित: having been lured, क्रोधितश्चैव having been angered, तपसा with his austerities, अभिवर्धते is growing:

"O Lord the great sage Viswamitra was lured and angered in various ways. But his austerities continued to grow:
न ह्यस्य वृजिनं किञ्चिद्दृश्यते सूक्ष्ममप्यथ।।1.65.11।।

न दीयते यदि त्वस्य मनसा यदभीप्सितम्।

विनाशयति त्रैलोक्यं तपसा सचराचरम्।।1.65.12।।


अथ also, अस्य his, सूक्ष्ममपि even minute, वृजिनम् sin, किञ्चित् a little, न दृश्यते not to be seen, अस्य his, मनसा by mind, यत् which, अभीप्सितम् is desired, न दीयते यदि if not given, तपसा with his austerities, सचराचरम् moveable and immoveable, त्रैलोक्यम् the three worlds together, विनाशयति will destroy.

His penance was flawless. If his wishes were not granted, he will surely destroy by his austerities the three worlds with all movables and immovables.
व्याकुलाश्च दिशस्सर्वा न च किञ्चित्प्रकाशते।

सागरा: क्षुभितास्सर्वे विशीर्यन्ते च पर्वता:।।1.65.13।।


सर्वा: all, दिश: quarters, व्याकुला: bewildered, किञ्चित् even a little, न प्रकाशते is not shining, सर्वे all, सागरा: seas, क्षुभिता: are agitated, पर्वता: mountains, विशीर्यन्ते are riven.

There is bewilderment everywhere. It is dark all over. The oceans are disturbed. The mountains have cracked.
प्रकम्पते च पृथिवी वायुर्वाति भृशाकुल:।

बृह्मन्न प्रतिजानीमोनास्तिको जायते जन:।।1.65.14।।


ब्रह्मन् O Brahma, पृथिवी earth, प्रकम्पते is trembling, वायु: wind, भृशाकुल: is excessively affected, वाति is blowing, न प्रतिजानीम: we do not know what to do, जन: men, नास्तिक: atheist, जायते are becoming.

O Brahma the earth trembles. The wind blows fiercely. The people have ceased to believe in God. We do not know the way out.
सम्मूढमिव त्रैलोक्यं सम्प्रक्षुभितमानसम्।

भास्करो निष्प्रभश्चैव महर्षेस्तस्य तेजसा।।1.65.15।।


त्रैलोक्यम् three worlds put together, सम्प्रक्षुभितमानसम् with agitated minds, सम्मूढमिव looking as though fainted, तस्य महर्षे: by that maharshi's, तेजसा lustre, भास्करश्च even Sun also, निष्प्रभ: is devoid of brilliance.

The people of all the three worlds are agitated and confused in mind. The Sun, too, looks pale before the brilliance of the Maharshi.
बुद्धिं न कुरुते यावन्नाशे देव महामुनि:।

तावत्प्रसाद्यो भगवा नग्निरूपोमहाद्युति:।।1.65.16।।


देव O Lord, महामुनि: the mighty ascetic, नाशे in destruction, यावत् until, बुद्धिम् mind, न कुरुते does not make, तावत् till then, अग्निरूप: resembling fire, महाद्युति: highly effulgent, भगवान् venerable, Visvamitra, प्रसाद्य: should be appeased.

O Lord before this mighty, venerable ascetic, effulgent like fire decides to destroy the three worlds, he should be appeased.
कालाग्निना यथापूर्वं त्रैलोक्यं दह्यतेऽखिलम्।

देवराज्यं चिकीर्षेत दीयतामस्य यन्मतम्।।1.65.17।।


अखिलम् entire, त्रैलोक्यम् three worlds, पूर्वम् formerly, कालाग्निना by fire at the dissolution of worlds, यथा in that manner, दह्यते is burnt, देवराज्यम् kingdom of devatas, चिकीर्षेत if he wants to rule, अस्य for him, यत् which, मतम् likes, दीयताम् be given.

All the three worlds are burning as though with the fire Pralaya (dissolution). His desire may be granted even if he wants to rule the kingdom of the gods.
ततस्सुरगणास्सर्वे पितामहपुरोगमा:।

विश्वामित्रं महात्मानं मधुरं वाक्यमब्रुवन्।।1.65.18।।


तत: thereafter, पितामहपुरोगमा: with Brahma in the forefront, सर्वे सुरगणा: hosts of devatas, महात्मानम् magnanimous, विश्वामित्रम् Visvamitra, मधुरम् sweet, वाक्यम् words, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Thereafter, with Brahma in the forefront, the gods spoke to Viswamitra in pleasing words:
ब्रह्मर्षे स्वागतं तेऽस्तु तपसा स्म सुतोषिता:।

ब्राह्मण्यं तपसोग्रेण प्राप्तवानसि कौशिक ।।1.65.19।।


ब्रह्मर्षे O Brahmarshi, ते to you, स्वागतम् welcome, तपसा with your austerities, सुतोषिता: स्म: we are immensely pleased, कौशिक O Viswmitra, उग्रेण by intense, तपसा austerities, ब्राह्मण्यम् brahminhood, प्राप्तवान् असि you have attained.

"Welcome, O Brahmarshi. We are immensely pleased with your austerities. O Kausika you have attained brahminhood by means of your intense penance.
दीर्घमायुश्च ते ब्रह्मन् ददामि समरुद्गण:।

स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भद्रं ते गच्छ सौम्य यथासुखम्।।1.65.20।।


ब्रह्मन् O Brahmana, समरुद्गण: I, together with hosts of maruts, ते to you, दीर्घम् long, आयुश्च life, ददामि am giving, स्वस्ति wellbeing, ते भद्रम् prosperity to you, प्राप्नुहि you may obtain, सौम्य O Gentle one, यथा सुखम् happily, गच्छ go.

O Brahmana I along with the maruts grant you long life. May you prosper O Gentle one now you may go happily".
पितामहवचश्शृत्वा सर्वेषां च दिवौकसाम्।

कृत्वा प्रणामं मुदितो व्याजहार महामुनि:।।1.65.21।।


महामुनि: mighty ascetic, पितामह वच: words of grand sire, सर्वेषाम् all, दिवौकसाम्च words of devatas, श्रुत्वा having heard, मुदित: delighted, प्रणामम् obeisance, कृत्वा having made, व्याजहार spoke.

Mighty ascetic Viswamitra was delighted to hear the words of the Grandsire and the gods. Bowing to all of them he thus spoke:
ब्राह्मण्यं यदि मे प्राप्तं दीर्घमायुस्तथैव च।

ओङ्कारश्च वषट्कारो वेदाश्च वरयन्तु माम्।।1.65.22।।


मे for me, ब्राह्मण्यम् brahminhood, प्राप्तम् यदि if acquired, तथैव च and similarly, दीर्घम् long, आयुश्च life, ओङ्कारश्च Omkara, वषट्कारश्च Vashatkara, वेदाश्च vedas, माम् me, वरयन्तु accept.

"If brahminhood and long life have been acquired by me by your grace, Omkara, Vashatkara and the Vedas shall accept me as Brahmarshi. (I shall acquire the right to interpret the Vedas and to perform sacrifices.)
क्षत्रवेदविदां श्रेष्ठो ब्रह्मवेदविदामपि।

ब्रह्मपुत्रो वसिष्ठो मामेवं वदतु देवता:।।1.65.23।।

यद्ययं परम: काम: कृतो यान्तु सुरर्षभा:।


देवता: O devatas, क्षत्रवेदविदाम् knowledgeable in vedas worthy of kshatriyas like archery, etc, ब्रह्मवेदविदामपि knowledgeable in vedas worthy to brahmins, श्रेष्ठ: eminent, ब्रह्मपुत्र: son of Brahma, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, माम् me, एवम् thus, वदतु speak, अयम् this, परम: supreme, काम: desire, कृत:यदि if done, सुरर्षभा: best of devatas, यान्तु you can go.

"O gods let the son of Brahma and eminent Vasishta who is knowledgeable in the vedas worthy of brahmins and archery worthy of kshatriyas address me as 'Brahmarshi'. If this supreme desire is granted, O Best of devatas all of you can go".
तत: प्रसादितो देवैर्वसिष्ठो जपतां वर:।।1.65.24।।

सख्यं चकार ब्रह्मर्षिरेवमस्त्विति चाब्रवीत्।


तत: there upon, देवै: by devatas, प्रसादित: propitiated, जपतां वर: the best among ascetics, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, सख्यम् friendship, चकार made, एवम् thus, ब्रह्मर्षि: अस्तु become brahmarshi, इति in this manner saying so, अब्रवीत् च spoken.

Thereupon, pleased by the gods, Vasishta, the best among ascetics, lovingly said to Viswamitra "You are a Brahmarshi, let it be so".
ब्रह्मर्षिस्त्वं न सन्देहस्सर्वं सम्पत्स्यते तव।।1.65.25।।

इत्युक्त्वा देवताश्चापि सर्वा जग्मुर्यथागतम्।


त्वम् you, ब्रह्मर्षि: are a Brahmarshi, सन्देह: न no doubt, तव to you,सर्वम् all, सम्पत्स्यते will be achieved (ascetic perfection), इति so, उक्त्वा having said, सर्वा: all, देवता: devatas, यथागतम् where they had come from, जग्मु: went away.

"You are a Brahmarshi, no doubt. You will achieve ascetic perfection", said the gods
and returned to their respective places from where they had come.
विश्वामित्रोऽपि धर्मात्मा लब्ध्वा ब्राह्मण्यमुत्तमम्।।1.65.26।।

पूजयामास ब्रह्मर्षिं वसिष्ठं जपतां वरम्।


धर्मात्मा virtuous, विश्वामित्र: अपि Visvamitra also, उत्तमम् excellent, ब्रह्मण्यम् brahminhood, लब्ध्वा having attained, ब्रह्मर्षिम् brahmrshi, जपताम् वरम् the best of those who recite prayers, वसिष्ठम् Vasishta, पूजयामास worshipped.

Virtuous Viswamitra also, having attained excellent brahminhood, worshipped Brahmrshi Vasishta who was the best of those who recite hymns".
कृतकामो महीं सर्वां चचार तपसि स्थित:।।1.65.27।।

एवं त्वनेन ब्राह्मण्यं प्राप्तं राम महात्मना।


कृतकाम: having fulfilled his desire, तपसि in asceticism, स्थित: fixed, सर्वाम् whole, महीम् earth, चचार wandered, राम O Rama, महात्मना by illustrious, अनेन by him, एवम् thus, ब्राह्मण्यम् brahminhood, प्राप्तम् was acquired.

This illustrious sage having fulfilled his desire, wandered over the earth fixed in asceticism. O Rama thus he acquired brahminhood.
एष राम मुनिश्रेष्ठ एष विग्रहवांस्तप:।।1.65.28।।

एष धर्मपरो नित्यं वीर्यस्यैष परायणम्।


राम O Rama, एष: he, मुनिश्रेष्ठ: is the foremost of ascetics, एष: he, विग्रहवान् embodiment of, तप: asceticism, एष: he, नित्यम् always, धर्मपर: intent on virtuous means, एष: he, वीर्यस्य for ascetic energy, परायणम् the goal (or the supreme goal).

O Rama he is the foremost of ascetics, an embodiment of asceticism, always intent on virtue. He is the ultimate repository of ascetic energy".
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विरराम द्विजोत्तम:।।1.65.29।।

शतानन्दवच: श्रुत्वा रामलक्ष्मणसन्निधौ।

जनक: प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमुवाच कुशिकात्मजम्।।1.65.30।।


महातेजा: most brilliant, द्विजोत्तम: excellent among brahmins, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, विरराम became silent, जनक: Janaka, रामलक्ष्मणसन्निधौ in the presence of Rama and Lakshmana, शतानन्द वच: words of Sadananda, शृत्वा having listened, प्राञ्जलि: with folded palms, कुशिकात्मजम् son of Kusika, वाक्यम् these words, उवाच spoke.

Having thus spoken, the most brilliant and best among brahmins (Satananda) became silent. In the presence of Rama and Lakshmana, Janaka listened to the words of Satananda. And with folded palms said to the son of Kushika (Viswamitra):
धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि यस्य मे मुनिपुङ्गव।

यज्ञं काकुत्स्थसहित: प्राप्तवानसि धार्मिक।।1.65.31।।


धर्मिक O Righteous one, मुनिपुङ्गव O Preeminent among ascetics, काकुत्स्थसहित: accompanied by Rama and Lakshmana, यस्य मे for my, यज्ञम् sacrifice, प्रप्तवान् असि you have arrived, धन्य: अस्मि blessed I am, अनुगृहीत: अस्मि I am greatly favoured.

"O Righteous one O Preeminent among ascetics you have come to my sacrifice accompanied by the descendants of Kakustha (Rama and Lakshmana). I am blessed by your presence and am highly favoured.
पावितोऽहं त्वया ब्रह्मन् दर्शनेन महामुने।

गुणा बहुविधा: प्राप्तास्तव सन्दर्शनान्मया।।1.65.32।।


महामुने O Excellent ascetic, ब्रह्मन् O Brahman, त्वया by you, दर्शनेन with presence, अहम् I, पावित: sanctified, तव your, सन्दर्शनात् from your visit, मया by me, बहुविधा: various, गुणा: qualities, प्राप्ता: are obtained.

O Excellent ascetic O Brahmana I am sanctified with your presence. I have derived immense benefits from your visit.
विस्तरेण च ते ब्रह्मन् कीर्त्यमानं महत्तप:।

श्रुतं मया महातेजो रामेण च महात्मना।।1.65.33।।


महातेज: O Highly powerful, ब्रह्मन् Brahmarshi, विस्तरेण in detail, कीर्त्यमानम् being related, ते your, महत् great, तप: austerities, मया by me, महात्मना distinguished, रामेण च Rama, श्रुतम् has been heard.

O powerful Brahmarshi distinguished Rama and I have heard your great austerities which were related in detail (by Satananda).
सदस्यै: प्राप्य च सद: श्रुतास्ते बहवो गुणा:।

अप्रमेयं तपस्तुभ्यमप्रमेयं च ते बलम्।।1.65.34।।

अप्रमेया गुणाश्चैव नित्यं ते कुशिकात्मज ।


सदस्यै: by members of the assembly, सद: sacrifice, प्राप्य having reached, ते your, बहव: many, गुणा: virtues, श्रुता: have been heard, तुभ्यम् for you, तप: austerities, अप्रमेयम् immeasurable, ते your, बलम् power, अप्रमेयम् immeasurable, कुशिकात्मज O son of Kusika, Visvamitra, ते your, गुण: च एव virtues also, नित्यम् always, अप्रमेया: immeasurable.

Many of your virtues have been heard by the members of the assembly present at the sacrifice. Your austerities are immeasurable, your power is immense. O Son of Kushika (Viswamitra), your virtues cannot be measured.
तृप्तिराश्चर्यभूतानां कथानां नास्ति मे विभो।।1.65.35।।

कर्मकालो मुनिश्रेष्ठ लम्बते रविमण्डलम्।


विभो: O Lord, आश्चर्यभूतानाम् forming wonders, कथानाम् pertaining to the deeds, मे to me, तृप्ति: satisfaction, नास्ति is not there, मुनिश्रेष्ठ O Excellent of ascetics, रविमण्डलम् the halo around the Sun, लम्बते is hanging down, कर्मकाल: (It is time for) evening ablutions.

O Lord I am never tired of listening to your marvellous deeds. O Excellent among ascetics the Sun has set and it is time for evening prayers.
श्व: प्रभाते महातेजो द्रष्टुमर्हसि मां पुन:।।1.65.36।।

स्वागतं तपतां श्रेष्ठ मामनुज्ञातुमर्हसि।


महातेज: O Sage possessing great austerities, श्व: tomorrow, प्रभाते at dawn, माम् me, पुन: again, द्रष्टुम् to see, अर्हसि behoves of you, तपताम् in reciting religious prayers, श्रेष्ठ excellent one, स्वागतम् welcome, माम् to me, अनुज्ञातुम् अर्हसि give me your consent to leave.

O Sage of great austerities come to me tomorrow at dawn. O Excellent ascetic welcome And allow me to leave".
एवमुक्तो मुनिवर: प्रशस्य पुरुषर्षभम्।।1.65.37।।

विससर्जाशु जनकं प्रीतं प्रीतमनास्तदा।


तदा then, एवम् thus, उक्त: spoken, मुनिवर: excellent ascetic, प्रीतमना: with pleased mind, प्रीतम् to the gratified man, पुरुषर्षभम् the best among men, जनकम् Janaka, प्रशस्य having extolled, आशु immediately, विससर्ज left.

Thus addressed (by the king), the gratified ascetic extolled the best among men (Janaka) and permitted him to leave immediately.
एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठं वैदेहो मिथिलाधिप:।।1.65.38।।

प्रदक्षिणं चकाराशु सोपाध्यायस्सबान्धव:।


वैदेह: king of Videha, मिथिलाथिप: lord of city of Mithila, मुनिश्रेष्ठम् that excellent ascetic, एवम् in this manner, उक्त्वा having spoken, सोपाध्याय: accompanied by his spiritual preceptors, सबान्धव: with relatives, आशु immediately, प्रदक्षिणं चकार performed circumambulation.

Having thus addressed the greatest sage, king of Videha, Lord of the city of Mithila (Janaka) accompanied by his king and spiritual preceptors circumambulated Viswamitra without delay.
विश्वामित्रोऽपि धर्मात्मा सहरामस्सलक्ष्मण:।।1.65.39।।

स्ववाटमभिचक्राम पूज्यमानो महर्षिभि:।


धर्मात्मा virtuous, विश्वामित्रोऽपि Visvamitra also, सहराम: together with Rama, सलक्ष्मण: with Lakshmana, महर्षिभि: along with maharshis, पूज्यमान: having ben honoured, स्ववाटम् towards his abode, अभिचक्राम started.

Virtuous Viswamitra, honoured by the maharshis, too, retired to his shelter along with Rama and Lakshmana.
इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये बालकाण्डे पञ्चषष्टितमस्सर्ग:।।
Thus ends the sixtyfifth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
