[Marriage of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna.]

यस्मिंस्तु दिवसे राजा चक्रे गोदानमुत्तमम् ।

तस्मिं स्तु दिवसे शूरो युधाजित्समुपेयिवान्।।1.73.1।।


राजा king, यस्मिन् on which, दिवसे day, उत्तमम् best, गोदानम् gift of cows, चक्रे made, तस्मिन् तु on that दिवसे day, शूर: heroic, युथाजित् Yudhajit, समुपेयिवान् arrived.

The day the king (Dasaratha) made a gift of the best (available) cows the heroic Yudhajit arrived.
पुत्र: केकयराजस्य साक्षाद्भरतमातुल:।

दृष्ट्वा पृष्ट्वा च कुशलं राजानमिदमब्रवीत्।।1.73.2।।


केकयराजस्य king Kekaya's, पुत्र: son, साक्षात् directly, भरतमातुल: maternal uncle of Bharata, राजानम् king Dasaratha, दृष्ट्वा having seen, कुशलम् welfare, पृष्ट्वा च having enquired, राजानम् addressing the king, इदं this word, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Yudhajit, son of king Kekaya, Bharata's own maternal uncle met the king (Dasaratha) and enquiring about his wellbeing said:
केकयाधिपती राजा स्नेहात् कुशलमब्रवीत् ।

येषां कुशलकामोऽसि तेषां सम्प्रत्यनामयम् ।।1.73.3।।


केकयाधिपति: lord of Kekaya, राजा king, स्नेहात् out of affection, कुशलम् welfare, अब्रवीत् spoken, येषाम् whose, कुशलकाम: असि are desiring the welfare, तेषाम् their, सम्प्रति now, अनामयम् healthy.

"My father, king of Kekaya affectionately enquires about your welfare. And they whose
welfare you seek are hale and healthy.
स्वस्रीयं मम राजेन्द्र द्रष्टुकामो महीपति:।

तदर्थमुपयातोऽहमयोध्यां रघुनन्दन।।1.73.4।।


रघुनन्दन O Joy of Raghus, राजेन्द्र O Indra among kings, महीपति: king of Kekaya, मम my, स्वस्रीयम् son of my sister, द्रष्टुकाम: wishing to see, तदर्थम् on that account, अहम् I, अयोध्याम् towards Ayodhya, उपयात: have gone.

The king of Kekaya, O Indra among kings, O Joy of the Raghus, desires to see my sisters's son and on that account I went to Ayodhya.
श्रुत्वा त्वहमयोध्यायां विवाहार्थं तवात्मजान् ।

मिथिलामुपयातांस्तु त्वया सह महीपते।।1.73.5।।

त्वरयाभ्युपयातोऽहं द्रष्टुकाम स्स्वसुस्सुतम्।


महीपते O King, तव your, आत्मजान् sons, विवाहार्थम् for their marriage, त्वया सह along with you, मिथिलाम् to Mithila, उपयातान् having arrived, अयोध्यायाम् Ayodhya, श्रुत्वा listened, अहम् I, स्वसु: sister's, सुतम् son, द्रष्टुकाम: desiring to see, त्वरया speedily, अभ्युपयात: came.

O King having heard in Ayodhya that you have arrived in Mithila along with your sons for their marriage I came here speedily with a desire to see my sister's son .
अथ राजा दशरथ: प्रियातिथिमुपस्थितम्।।1.73.6।।

दृष्ट्वा परमसत्कारै: पूजार्हं समपूजयत्।


अथ afterwards, राजा king, दशरथ: Dasaratha, उपस्थितम् attended, प्रियातिथिम् dear guest, दृष्ट्वा having seen, पूजार्हम् deserving the honours, परमसत्कारै: with supreme honours, समपूजयत् extended.

King Dasaratha, then accorded a warm welcome to the honoured guest.
ततस्तामुषितो रात्रिं सह पुत्रैर्महात्मभि:।।1.73.7।।

प्रभाते पुनरुत्थाय कृत्वा कर्माणि कर्मवित् ।

ऋषींस्तदा पुरस्कृत्य यज्ञवाटमुपागमत्।।1.73.8।।


तत: thereafter, महात्मभि: with the illustrious, पुत्रै: सह with sons, ताम् that, रात्रिम् night, उषित: having dwelt, कर्मवित् knower of duties, प्रभाते at dawn, पुन: again, उत्थाय having arisen, कर्माणि daily devotions, कृत्वा having made, तदा then, ऋषीन् rishis, पुरस्कृत्य preceded by, यज्ञवाटम् sacrificial place, उपागमत् reached.

With the night spent with his virtuous sons, he who knew his duties got up at dawn and performed his daily devotionas and reached the sacrificial place following the rishis.
युक्ते मुहूर्ते विजये सर्वाभरणभूषितै:।

भ्रातृभिस्सहितो राम: कृतकौतुकमंगल:।।1.73.9।।

वसिष्ठं पुरत: कृत्वा महर्षीनपरानपि।

पितु स्समीपमाश्रित्य तस्थौ भ्रातृभिरावृत:।।1.73.10।।


युक्ते at auspicious, विजये Vijaya, मुहुर्ते time, सर्वाभरणभूषितै: adorned with ornaments ,भ्रातृभि: with brothers, सहित: accompanied by, राम: Rama, कृतकौतुकमङ्गल: with all the auspicious rites preparatory to marriage having been performed, वसिष्ठम् Vasistha, अपरान् other, महर्षीनपि maharshi also, पुरत: कृत्वा keeping ahead, पितु: father's, समीपम् presence, आश्रित्य having reached, भ्रातृभि: with brother, आवृत: surrounded by, तस्थौ remained.

With the necessary auspicious rites preparatory to marriage performed at an auspicious moment, Vijaya, and keeping Vasishta and other maharshis in the forefront, Rama accompanied by his brothers adorned with ornaments of every kind came into his father's presence.
वसिष्ठो भगवानेत्य वैदेहमिदमब्रवीत्।

राजा दशरथो राजन् कृतकौतुकमङ्गलै:।।1.73.11।।

पुत्रैर्नरवर श्रेष्ठ दातारमभिकाङ्क्षते।


भगवान् adorable, वसिष्ठ: Vasishta, वैदेहम् king Janaka, एत्य approaching him, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, राजन् O King, नरवर श्रेष्ठ excellent among men, राजा दशरथ: king Dasaratha, कृतकौतुकमङ्गलै: having performed all the auspicious rites preparatory to their marriage, पुत्रैः with sons, दातारम् bestower of bride, अभिकाङ्क्षते is awaiting.

Adorable Vasishta approached king Janaka and said, "O King, of Videha king Dasaratha, the best of men with his sons having performed the auspicious rites preparatory to marriage is awaiting the bestower of the brides".
दातृप्रतिग्रहीतृभ्यां सर्वार्था: प्रभवन्ति हि।।1.73.12।।

स्वधर्मं प्रतिपद्यस्व कृत्वा वैवाह्यमुत्तमम्।


सर्वार्था: all the ends, दातृप्रतिग्रहीतृभ्याम् through the giver and receiver, प्रभवन्ति हि takes place, उत्तमम् वैवाह्यम् excellent (auspicious) marriage, कृत्वा having performed, स्वधर्मम् own duty, प्रतिपद्यस्व fulfill.

The giver and the receiver, indeed, attain all ends. Fulfil your own duty by performing the auspicious marriage".
इत्युक्त: परमोदारो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना।।1.73.13।।

प्रत्युवाच महातेजा वाक्यं परमधर्मवित्।


महात्मना magnanimous, वसिष्ठेन by Vasishta, इति thus, उक्त: having been spoken, परमोदार: exceedingly generous, महातेजा highly lustrous, परमधर्मवित् eminent in ethics and morality, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Thus addressed by the great self Vasishta, Janaka, the exceedingly generous, highly lustrous, eminent in ethics replied.
कस्स्थित: प्रतिहारो मे कस्याज्ञा सम्प्रतीक्ष्यते।।1.73.14।।

स्वगृहे को विचारोऽस्ति यथा राज्यमिदं तव।


मे my, प्रतिहार: guarding the door, क: who, स्थित: is waiting, कस्य whose, आज्ञा command, सम्प्रतीक्ष्यते awaiting, स्वगृहे own house, क: what, विचार: अस्ति hesitation is there, इदम् this, राज्यम् kingdom, तव यथा is like yours.

"Did any guard prevent you? Whose command are you waiting for? Why do you hesitate to enter into your own house? This kingdom is like your kingdom".
कृतकौतुकसर्वस्वा वेदिमूलमुपागता:।।1.73.15।।

मम कन्या मुनिश्रेष्ठ दीप्ता वह्नेरिवार्चिष:।


मुनिश्रेष्ठ O Best of ascetics, मम my, कन्या daughters, कृतकौतुकसर्वस्वा: having performed completely all the rites relating to marriage, दीप्ता: shining, वह्ने: fire's, अर्चिष इव like the lustre of flames, वेदिमूलम् foot of the altar, उपागता: arrived.

O Best of ascetics my daughters have performed all the rites relating to marriage. They (now) stand at the foot of the altar shining like the bright flames of fire.
सज्जोऽहं त्वत्प्रतीक्षोऽस्मि वेद्यामस्यां प्रतिष्ठित:।।1.73.16।।

अविघ्नं कुरुतां राजा किमर्थमवलम्बते।


सज्ज: kept ready, अहम् I, अस्याम् on this, वेद्याम् altar, प्रतिष्ठित: staying, त्वत्प्रतीक्ष: अस्मि awaiting you, राजा king, अविघ्नम् without hindrance, कुरुताम् let it be done, किमर्थम् why for, अवलम्बते delay.

Ready at the altar, I have been awaiting you, O King Without hindrance proceed Why delay?".
तद्वाक्यं जनकेनोक्तं श्रुत्वा दशरथस्तदा।

प्रवेशयामास सुतान् सर्वानृषिगणानपि।।1.73.17।।


तदा then, दशरथ: Dasaratha, जनकेन by Janaka, उक्तम् having been spoken, तत् those, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा having listened, सुतान् sons, सर्वान् all, ऋषिगणानपि hosts of ascetics also, प्रवेशयामास made them enter.

At the words of Janaka, Dasaratha brought his sons along with the hosts of ascetics and entered the marriage pavilion.
ततो राजा विदेहानां वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत्।।1.73.18।।

कारयस्व ऋषे सर्वमृषिभि: सह धार्मिक।

रामस्य लोकरामस्य क्रियां वैवाहिकीं विभो।।1.73.19।।


तत: thereafter, विदेहानाम् king of Videhas, राजा king, वसिष्ठम् Vasishta, इदम् these (words), अब्रवीत् spoke, धार्मिक O Adherent of righteousness, विभो O Competent one, ऋषे O Maharshi Vasishta, ऋषिभि: सह together with rishis, लोकरामस्य delighting the worlds, रामस्य Rama's, वैवाहिकीम् relating to the marriage, क्रियाम् ceremonies, कारयस्व make them perform.

Thereafter the king of the Videhas to Vasishta, "O Adherent of righteousness, O Lord O Maharshi perform with the rishis the marriage ceremony of Rama who causes delight to the three worlds".
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु जनकं वसिष्ठो भगवानृषि:।

विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य शतानन्दं च धार्मिकम्।।1.73.20।।

प्रपामध्ये तु विधिवत्वेदिं कृत्वा महातपा: ।

अलञ्चकार तां वेदिं गन्धपुष्पै स्समन्तत: ।।1.73.21।।

सुवर्णपालिकाभिश्च छिद्रकुम्भैश्च साङ्कुरै:।

अङ्कुराढ्यैश्शरावैश्च धूपपात्रै स्सधूपकै:।।1.73.22।।

शङ्खपात्रै स्स्रुवै स्स्रुग्भि: पात्रैरर्घ्याभिपूरितै:।

लाजपूर्णैश्च पात्रीभिरक्षतैरभिसंस्कृतै:।।1.73.23।।


भगवान् venerable, महतपा: renowned ascetic, वसिष्ठ: ऋषि: rishi Vasishta, जनकम् addressing king Janaka, तथा इति "Be it so", उक्त्वा having said, विश्वामित्रम् to Visvamitra, धार्मिकम् virtuous, शतानन्दं च Satananda, पुरस्कृत्य in the forefront, प्रपामध्ये in the center of the marriage pavillion, विधिवत् in accordance with scriptures, वेदिम् altar, कृत्वा having constructed, गन्धपुष्पै: with fragrant flowers, सुवर्णपालिकाभिश्च with golden hollow plates, साङ्कुरै: with sprouts, छिद्रकुम्भैश्च water pots containing holes, अङ्कुराढ्यै: filled with sprouts, शरावैश्च earthenware vessels, सधूपकै: by burning frgrant insenses, धूपपात्रै: holders of frgrant insenses, शङ्खपात्रै: conch shaped vessels, सृवै: sacrificial ladles, सृग्भि: bowls, अर्घ्याभिपूरितै: filled with with water for Arghya and other purposes, पात्रै: with vessels, लाजपूर्णै: roasted paddy, पात्रीभि: with vessels, अभिसंस्कृतै: sanctified, अक्षतै: rice grains, ताम् that, वेदिम् altar, समन्तत on all sides, अलञ्चकार adorned.

Venerable and renowned ascetic Vasishta said "Be it so".And with Viswamitra and virtuous Satananda in the forefront, an altar was duly improvised in the centre of the sacrificial pavilion. He adorned the altar on all sides with fragrant flowers, golden ladles, waterpots with holes filled with sprouts, earthen vessels with sprouts, holders of burning fragrant incense conchshaped vessels, sacrificial ladles, bowls filled with with water for arghya and other purposes, vessels with roasted paddy and grains of rice.
दर्भैस्समैस्समास्तीर्य विधिवन्मन्त्रपूर्वकम्।

अग्निमादाय वेद्यां तु विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम्।।1.73.24।।

जुहावाग्नौ महातेजा वसिष्ठो भगवानृषि:।


महातेजा: highly lustrous, भगवान् worshipful, वसिष्ठ: ऋषि: rishi Vasistha, समै: of equal proportions, दर्भै: Darbha grass, विधिवत् according to tradition, मन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् reciting mantra, समास्तीर्य having strewn, विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् reciting mantras according to scriptures, वेद्याम् on the altar, अग्निम् fire, आदाय having placed, अग्नौ in the fire, जुहाव offered oblations.

Brilliant and worshipful rishi Vasishta chanted, mantras according to tradition, put the darbha grass of equal proportions around the altar, placed the fire on the altar, recited
the mantras from the scriptures and offered oblations into the flame.
ततस्सीतां समानीय सर्वाभरणभूषिताम्।।1.73.25।।

समक्षमग्ने स्संस्थाप्य राघवाभिमुखे तदा।

अब्रवीज्जनको राजा कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनम्।।1.73.26।।


तत thereafter, राजा king, जनक: Janaka, सर्वाभरणभूषिताम् adorned with various ornaments, सीताम् Sita, समानीय having brought, अग्ने: समक्षम् in the presence of Agni, राघवाभिमुखे facing Rama, संस्थाप्य placing, तदा then, कौसल्यानन्दवर्धनम् enhancing the joy of Kausalya, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Thereafter king Janaka brought Sita adorned with various ornaments and placed her in the presence of Agni in front of Rama, the enhancer of the joy of Kausalya. And said:
इयं सीता मम सुता सहधर्मचरी तव।

प्रतीच्छ चैनां भद्रं ते पाणिं गृह्णीष्व पाणिना।।1.73.27।।


मम my, सुता daughter, तव your, सहधर्मचरी with you observing righteous deeds, सीता Sita, इयम् this girl, एनाम् her, प्रतीच्छ च accept, ते भद्रम् prosperity to you, पाणिम् her hand, पाणिना with your hand, गृह्णीष्व hold.

"This my daughter Sita will be your partner in performing her rightful duty. Accept her. Farewell. Take her hand into your own.
पतिव्रता महाभागा छायेवानुगता सदा।

इत्युक्त्वा प्राक्षिपद्राजा मन्त्रपूतं जलं तदा।।1.73.28।।


महाभागा highly fortunate, पतिव्रता devoted, faithful and loyal wife, सदा always, छाया इव like shadow, अनुगता follows, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, राजा king, तदा then,मन्त्रपूतम् sanctified with mantra, जलम् water, प्राक्षिपत् released.

By being a devoted wife this highly fortunate Sita would always follow you like a shadow". Thus spoken, he sprinkled the water sanctified with mantras (on them).
साधु साध्विति देवाना मृषीणां वदतां तदा ।

देवदुन्दुभिर्निर्घोष: पुष्पवर्षो महानभूत्।।1.73.29।।


तदा then, साधु साधु इति "Well, Well" saying so, वदताम् exclaiming, ऋषीणाम् sages, देवानाम् devatas, देवदुन्दुभिनिर्घोष: sounded the celestial kettledrums, महान् great, पुष्पवर्ष: rain of flowers, अभूत् fell.

Then gods and sages exclaimed: 'well, well'. Celestial kettledrums were sounded and there was a steady rain of flowers.
एवं दत्त्वा तदा सीतां मन्त्रोदकपुरस्कृताम् ।

अब्रवीज्जनको राजा हर्षेणाभिपरिप्लुत:।।1.73.30।।


तदा then, जनक: राजा king Janaka, मन्त्रोदकपुरस्कृताम् with waters sanctified by mantras, सीताम् Sita, दत्वा having given, हर्षेण with delight, अभिपरिप्लुत: eyes suffused with tears, अब्रवीत् said.

Then king Janaka sprinkled on Sita waters sanctified by mantras, and immersed in delight said:
लक्ष्मणागच्छ भद्रं ते ऊर्मिलामुद्यतां मया।

प्रतीच्छ पाणिं गृह्णीष्व माभूत्कालस्य पर्यय:।।1.73.31।।


लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, आगच्छ come, मया by me, उद्यताम् ready to be bestowed upon, ऊर्मिलाम् Urmila, प्रतीच्छ accept, पाणिम् her hand, (पाणिना with your hand), गृह्णीष्व hold, कालस्य time, पर्यय: delay, माभूत् let not happen.

"Lakshmana come and accept my daughter. Urmila ready to be bestowed upon you
by me. Take her hand. Let there be no delay".
तमेवमुक्त्वा जनको भरतं चाभ्यभाषत।

गृहाण पाणिं माण्डव्या: पाणिना रघुनन्दन ।।1.73.32।।


जनक: Janaka, तम् to Lakshmana, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, भरतं च addressing Bharata, अभ्यभाषत had spoken, रघुनन्दन O Descendent of Raghu, पाणिना with your hand, माण्डव्या: Mandavi's, पाणिम् hand, गृहाण hold.

Janaka, having spoken thus to Lakshmana addressed Bharata: "O Descendant of the Raghus hold Mandavi's hand in your own".
शत्रुघ्नं चापि धर्मात्मा अब्रवीज्जनकेश्वर:।

श्रुतकीर्त्या महाबाहो पाणिं गृह्णीष्व पाणिना।।1.73.33।।


धर्मात्मा Virtuous, जनकेश्वर: monarch Janaka, शत्रुघ्नं चापि addressing Satrghna also, अब्रवीत् spoke, महाबाहो O Mighty armed one, पाणिना with your hand, श्रुतकीर्त्या: Srutakirti's, पाणिम् hand, गृह्णीष्व hold.

The righteous king Janaka, said again: "O Mightyarmed Satrughna take the hands of Srutakirti".
सर्वे भवन्तस्सौम्याश्च सर्वे सुचरितव्रता:।

पत्नीभिस्सन्तु काकुत्स्था माभूत्कालस्य पर्यय:।।1.73.34।।


काकुत्स्था: O Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna, भवन्त: all of you, सर्वे all, सौम्या: च gentle also, सुचरितव्रता: possess good conduct and faithful vows, पत्नीभि: with your wives, सन्तु become, कालस्य of time, पर्यय: delay, माभूत् let not happen.

O Descendants of Kakustha (Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna) you all are gentle. You possess sound character. You are true to your vows. Live with your wives. Let there be no delay".
जनकस्य वच श्शृत्वा पाणीन् पाणिभिरास्पृशन्।

चत्वारस्ते चतसृ़णां वसिष्ठस्य मते स्थिता:।।1.73.35।।


ते those, चत्वार: four, जनकस्य Janaka's, वच: words, श्रुत्वा having heard, वसिष्ठस्य Vasishta's, मते consent, स्थिता: staying, पाणिभि: hands, चतसृ़णां those four sisters, पाणीन् hands, अस्पृशन् touched.

At the words of Janaka the four princes took the hands of the four sisters with their own with the consent of Vasishta .
अग्निं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य वेदिं राजानमेव च।

ऋषींश्चैव महात्मानस्सभार्या रघुसत्तमा:।।1.73.36।।

यथोक्तेन तदा चक्रुर्विवाहं विधिपूर्वकम्।


महात्मान: magnanimous, रघुसत्तमा: greatest in the race of Raghu, सभार्या accompanied by their wives, अग्निं sacred fire, वेदिम् altar, राजानमेव च king Janaka, ऋषींश्चैव sages also, प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य having circumabulted, यथोक्तेन in obedience to the directions, विधिपूर्वकम् in accordance with the scriptures, विवाहम् marriage, चक्रु: made.

The great, noble princes of the race of Raghu, accompanied by their wives circumambulated the altar of the sacred fire. King Janaka and the sages in obedience
to the directions of Vasishta and in accordance with the sastras conducted the matrimonial.
काकुत्स्थैश्च गृहीतेषु ललितेषु च पाणिषु।।1.73.37।।

पुष्पवृष्टिर्महत्यासीदन्तरिक्षात्सुभास्वरा।


काकुत्स्थै: Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna, ललितेषु elegant, पाणिषु hands, गृहीतेषु while accepting, अन्तरिक्षात् from the sky, सुभास्वरा with immense splendour, महती great, पुष्पवृष्टि: rain of flowers, आसीत् was showered.

While the descendants of Kakustha (Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna) held
the elegant hands (of Sita, Urmila, Mandavi, and Srutakirti) there was a heavy rain of bright flowers from the sky.
दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्गीतवादित्रनिस्वनै:।।1.73.38।।

ननृतुश्चाप्सरस्सङ्घा गन्धर्वाश्च जगु: कलम्।

विवाहे रघुमुख्यानां तदद्भुतमदृश्यत।।1.73.39।।


रघुमुख्यानाम् by foremost of Raghus, विवाहे in marriage ceremony, दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषै: with sounds of celestial ketledrums, गीतवादित्रनिस्वनै: with sounds of songs and instrumental music, अप्सरस्सङ्घा: troops of apsaras, ननृतु danced, गन्धर्वाश्च gandharvas also, कलम् in indescribable melody, जगु: sang, तत् this, अद्भुतम् wonderful, अदृश्यत was seen.

While the bridal ceremony of the foremost of Raghus was on, the apsaras danced to the tune of songs and instrumental music. Sounds of celestial kettledrums were heard. Gandharvas sang in mellifluous melody. It was an unearthly sight.
ईदृशे वर्तमाने तु तूर्योद्घुष्टनिनादिते।

त्रिरग्निं ते परिक्रम्य ऊहुर्भार्यां महौजस:।।1.73.40।।


ईदृशे in such, तूर्योद्घुष्टनिनादिते when the tunes of wind instruments were sounding, वर्तमाने when this was going on, महौजस: possessing great splendour, ते those brothers, त्रि: three times, अग्निम् fire, परिक्रम्य having gone round, र्भार्या: their consorts, ऊहु: got married.

While the celebration resounded witht he windinstruments the mighty brothers went round the fire three times with their consorts and tied their nuptial knot.
अथोपकार्यां जग्मुस्ते सभार्या रघुनन्दना:।

राजाऽप्यनुययौ पश्यंत्सर्षिसंघ स्सबान्धव:।।1.73.41।।

Thereafter the descendants of Raghu along with their wives departed for their tents. The king (Dasaratha) also accompanied them with hosts of rishis and relatives.
