[Devatas urge Visnu to incarnate in human form to destroy Ravana--A celestial being from Prajapatya emerges from the sacrificial fire--gives a vessel containing payasam--his wives partake the payasam and become pregnant.]

tatō nārāyaṇō dēvō niyuktassurasattamai:.

jānannapi surānēvaṅ ślakṣṇaṅ vacanamabravīt৷৷1.16.1৷৷


tata: then, surasattamai: by best of devatas, niyukta: having been employed, nārāyaṇa:dēva: lord Narayana, jānannapi although cognizant of, surān addressing devatas, ēvam in this manner, ślakṣṇam softly, vacanam words, abravīt spoke.

Although Omniscient lord Narayana knew the means to be employed, when he was requested by the best of devatas he spoke to them softly:
upāya: kō vadhē tasya rāvaṇasya durātmana:.

yamahaṅ taṅ samāsthāya nihanyāmṛṣikaṇṭakam৷৷1.16.2৷৷


durātmana: of the evil minded, tasya rāvaṇasya that Ravana's, vadhē in the matter of destruction, upāya: strategies, ka: what?, yam by which ever strategies, āsthāya after adopting, ṛṣikaṇṭakam thorn by the side of sages(causing sufferings to sages), tam him, aham I, nihanyām I shall kill.

"What strategies should be adopted in the matter of destruction of that evil-minded Ravana who is a thorn to the sages?".
ēvamuktāssurāssarvē pratyūcurviṣṇumavyayam.

mānuṣīṅ tanumāsthāya rāvaṇaṅ jahi saṅyugē৷৷1.16.3৷৷


ēvam uktā: in this manner addressed, surā: the devatas, sarvē all, avyayam Imperishable, viṣṇum Vishnu, pratyūcu: replied back, mānuṣīm relaing to human being, tanum body, āsthāya assuming, saṅyugē in the battle, rāvaṇam jahi kill Ravana.

When the devatas were thus addressed by the imperishable Visnu, they replied him saying, "You may assume the form of a human being and slay Ravana in the battle".
sa hi tēpē tapastīvraṅ dīrghakālamarindama ! .

yēna tuṣṭō.bhavadbrahmā lōkakṛllōkapūrvaja:৷৷1.16.4৷৷


arindama O!Destroyer of foes, sa: Ravana, dīrghakālam for long time, tīvram severe, tapa: penance, tēpē performed, yēna by which, lōkakṛt creator of the world, lōkapūrvaja: born prior to the creation of the worlds, brahmā Brahma, tuṣṭa:abhavat was very pleased.

"O destroyer of foes! Lord Brahma was very pleased with Ravana's intense penance over a long time৷৷
santuṣṭa: pradadau tasmai rākṣasāya varaṅ prabhu:. 04

nānāvidhēbhyō bhūtēbhyō bhayaṅ nānyatra mānuṣāt৷৷1.16.5৷৷

avajñātā: purā tēna varadānē hi mānavā:. 105


santuṣṭa: very pleased, prabhu: all powerful Brahma, tasmai rākṣasāya for that rakshasa, mānuṣāt anyatra except from men, nānāvidhēbhya: from several others, bhūtēbhya: from living beings, bhayam fear, na none, varam boon, pradadau granted, purā earlier, varadānē at the time of granting boon, tēna by him, mānavā: men, avajñātā: were disregarded.

Pleased, with the rakshasa Brahma granted a boon to the effect that except from men, there was, for him, no fear of death from any other living beings. Ravana ignored men while seeking the boon.
ēvaṅ pitāmahāttasmādvaraṅ prāpya sa darpita:৷৷1.16.6৷৷

utsādayati lōkāntrīn striyaścāpyapakarṣati .

tasmāttasya vadhō dṛṣṭō mānuṣēbhya: parantapa৷৷1.16.7৷৷


ēvam in this manner, tasmāt pitāmahāt from that Brahma, varam boon, prāpya having obtained, sa: Ravana, darpita: became arrogant, trīn three, lōkān worlds, utsādayati destroyed, striya: women, apakarṣati ca carries away by violence, tasmāt for that reason, parantapa O! Destroyer of foes, tasya vadha: killing him, mānuṣēbhya: from(by) men, dṛṣṭa: has been seen.

Having obtained the boon from Brahma, Ravana, greed and arrogant went on bringing destruction to the three worlds. He carried away women by violence. O destroyer of foes! his death is possible by men only."
ityētadvacanaṅ śrutvā surāṇāṅ viṣṇurātmavān.

pitaraṅ rōcayāmāsa tadā daśarathaṅ nṛpam৷৷1.16.8৷৷


iti in this manner, surāṇām devatas, ētat vacanam these words, śrutvā having heard, ātmavān intellectual, viṣṇu: Visnu, tadā then, daśarathaṅ nṛpam king Dasaratha, pitaram as father, rōcayāmāsa liked (chosen).

Having heard the words of devatas, self-possessed Visnu chose king Dasaratha as his father.
sa cāpyaputrō nṛpatistasminkālē mahādyuti:.

ayajatputriyāmiṣṭiṅ putrēpsurarisūdana:৷৷1.16.9৷৷


tasmin kālē at that time, mahādyuti: effulgent, arisūdana: destroyer of enemies, sa:nṛpati: that king, aputra: without sons, putrēpsu: wishing to beget sons, putriyām iṣṭim a sacrifice to obtain sons, ayajat performed.

At that time, the brilliant king (Dasaratha), destroyer of enemies, who had no sons was performing a sacrifice for sons.
sa kṛtvā niścayaṅ viṣṇurāmantrya ca pitāmaham.

antardhānaṅ gatō dēvai: pūjyamānō maharṣibhi:৷৷1.16.10৷৷


sa: viṣṇu: Vishnu, niścayaṅ kṛtvā having decided, pitāmaham Grand-sire, Brahma, āmantrya bidding farewell, dēvai: by devatas, maharṣibhi: by maharshis, pūjyamāna: worshipped by, antardhānaṅ gata: disappeared.

After Visnu had decided (to incarnate) and he was worshipped by devatas and maharshis he disappeared bidding farewell to Brahma.
tō vai yajamānasya pāvakādatulaprabham.

prādurbhūtaṅ mahadbhūtaṅ mahāvīryaṅ mahābalam৷৷1.16.11৷৷

kṛṣṇaṅ raktāmbaradharaṅ raktāsyaṅ dundubhisvanam.

snigdhaharyakṣatanujaśmaśrupravaramūrdhajam৷৷1.16.12৷৷

śubhalakṣaṇasampannaṅ divyābharaṇabhūṣitam.

śailaśṛṅgasamutsēthaṅ dṛptaśārdūlavikramam৷৷1.16.13৷৷

divākarasamākāraṅ dīptānalaśikhōpamam.

taptajāmbūnadamayīṅ rājatāntaparicchadām৷৷1.16.14৷৷

divyapāyasasampūrṇāṅ pātrīṅ patnīmiva priyām.

pragṛhya vipulāṅ dōrbhyāṅ svayaṅ māyāmayīmiva৷৷1.16.15৷৷


tata: then, yajamānasya while Dasaratha was performing the sacrifice, pāvakāt from the sacrificial fire, atulaprabham of unmatched splendour, mahāvīryam of great prowess, mahābalam great strength, kṛṣṇaṅ raktāmbaradharam clad in black and crimpson garment, raktāsyam red-faced, dundubhisvanam having a voice similar to the sounds of drum, snigdhaharyakṣatanujaśmaśrupravaramūrdhajam with whiskers of soft and shining tawny hair resembling mane of lion and excellent hair, śubhalakṣaṇasampannam endowed with auspicious signs, divyābharaṇabhūṣitam adorned with splendid divine ornaments, śailaśruṅgasamutsētham resembling the height of a peak of a mountain, dṛptaśārdūlavikramam having the strides of an arrogant tiger, divākarasamākāram similar to the Sun in radiance, dīptānalaśikhōpamam looking like the crest of blazing fire, mahat great, bhūtam being, taptajāmbūnadamayīm made of gold purified in fire, rājatāntaparicchadām made of silver, divyapāyasasampūrṇām filled with divine (excellent) Payasam(a preparation of rice in milk and sugar), māyāmayīmiva as if made out of illusion, vipulām large, pātrīm vessel, priyāṅ patnīmiva like a beloved wife, svayam on his own, dōrbhyām with both the hands, pragṛhya holding, prādurbhūtam emerged.

During the sacrifice, there emerged from the sacrificial fire a mighty being with unmatched splendour, his prowess and strength. He wore a black and crimson garment. He had a red face. His voice was similar to the sounds of a drum. He had whiskers of soft and shining tawny hair resembling the mane of a lion He had fine hair on his head. He was endowed with auspicious signs and adorned with splendid divine ornaments. His height resembled a mountain peak. He walked with the strides of a ferocious tiger. Similar to the Sun in radiance, he looked like the crest of a blazing fire. This divine being held like his beloved wife both hands, a large vessel made of gold purified, in fire, covered with a silver lid and filled with payasam (a preparation of rice in milk and sugar). It looked as though it was created by magic.
samavēkṣyābravīdvākyamidaṅ daśarathaṅ nṛpam.

prājāpatyaṅ naraṅ viddhi māmihābhyāgataṅ nṛpa৷৷1.16.16৷৷


daśarathaṅ nṛpam king Dasaratha, samavēkṣya seeing him, idam vākyam these words, abravīt had spoken, nṛpa O!king, iha abhyāgatam have come here, prājāpatyam from Prajapati (Brahma), naram person, viddhi you know.

Having seen king Dasaratha, he said, "O King! you know I have been sent by Prjapati (Brahma), and I am here".
tata: paraṅ tadā rājā pratyuvāca kṛtāñjali:.

bhagavan! svāgataṅ tē.stu kimahaṅ karavāṇi tē৷৷1.16.17৷৷


tata:param thereafter, tadā then, rājā king, kṛtāñjali: with folded palms, pratyuvāca replied, bhagavan O! Revered lord, tē svāgatam astu welcome to you, aham I, tē to you, kim what, karavāṇi can do.

With folded palms the king replied, "O revered lord!. Welcome to you. What can I do
for you?".
athō punaridaṅ vākyaṅ prājāpatyō narō.bravīt.

rājannarcayatā dēvānadya prāptamidaṅ tvayā৷৷1.16.18৷৷


athō thereafter, prājāpatya: the being sent by Prajapati, nara: that person, puna: again, idaṅ vākyam these words, abravīt spoke, rājan O! king, dēvān devatas, arcayatā while worshipping, tvayā by you, adya to-day, idaṅ this, prāptam obtained.

Thereafter the one who came from Prajapati answered, "O King! you have obtained this payasam today in return for the worship offered to the devatas".
idaṅ tu nṛpaśārdūla! pāyasaṅ dēvanirmitam.

prajākaraṅ gṛhāṇa tvaṅ dhanyamārōgyavardhanam৷৷1.16.19৷৷


nṛpaśārdūla O! Best among kings, dēvanirmitam prepared by gods, prajākaram conferring progeny, dhanyam bestowing affluence, ārōgyavardhanam helps in improving health, idam pāyasam this Payasam, tvam you, gṛhāṇa receive.

"O Lion! among kings, receive this payasam prepared by gods, conferring progeny, bestowing affluence and improving health.
bhāryāṇāmanurūpāṇāmaśnītēti prayaccha vai.

tāsu tvaṅ prāpsyasē putrānyadarthaṅ yajasē nṛpa!৷৷1.16.20৷৷


nṛpa O! King, aśnīta iti "consume it", anurūpāṇām worthy, bhāryāṇām consorts, prayaccha vai give it to them, yadartham for whose sake, yajasē you are performing this sacrifice, putrān such sons, tāsu inthem, tvam you, prāpsyasē will obtain.

O King! you are performing this sacrifice for the sake of sons. Give this to your worthy consorts to consume it. They will bear you sons".
tathēti nṛpati: prītaśśirasā pratigṛhyatām.

pātrīṅ dēvānnasampūrṇāṅ dēvadattāṅ hiraṇmayīm৷৷1.16.21৷৷


nṛpati: king, tathēti so be it, tāṅ dēvānnasampūrṇām all that food prepared by deities, dēvadattām bestowed by devatas, hiraṇmayīm golden, pātrīm vessel, śirasā by lowering his head respectfully, pratigṛhya having received, prīta: pleased.

Dasaratha was pleased to receive respectfully the golden vessel filled with the payasam prepared and bestowed by devatas.
abhivādya ca tadbhūtamadbhutaṅ priyadarśanam.

mudā paramayā yuktaścakārābhipradakṣiṇam৷৷1.16.22৷৷


paramayā by utmost, mudā yukta: endowed with joy, adbhutam wonderful, priyadarśanam having pleasant countenance, tat bhūtam that being, abhivādya having saluated, pradakṣiṇam cakāra circumambulated.

Overwhelmed with great joy, he, walked around that wonderful being of pleasant countenance again and again and saluated him respectfully.
tatō daśaratha: prāpya pāyasaṅ dēvanirmitam.

babhūva paramaprīta: prāpya vittamivādhana:৷৷1.16.23৷৷


tata: afterthat, daśaratha: Dasaratha, dēvanirmitam prepared by devatas, pāyasam Payasam, prāpya having obtained, vittam wealth, prāpya having got, adhana:iva like a person having no wealth, paramaprīta:babhūva was highly pleased.

Dasaratha who received the payasam prepared by devatas was highly pleased like a poor man who received wealth.
tatastadadbhutaprakhyaṅ bhūtaṅ paramabhāsvaram.

saṅvartayitvā tatkarma tatraivāntaradhīyata৷৷1.16.24৷৷


tata: then, adbhutaprakhyam having a wonderful form, paramabhāsvaram highly effulgent, tadbhūtam that being, tatkarma that task, saṅvartayitvā having performed, tatraiva from there, antaradhīyata disappeared.

Then that effulgent figure of wonderful form having given the bowl of payasam vanished from there.
harṣaraśmibhirudyōtaṅ tasyānta:puramābabhau.

śāradasyābhirāmasya candrasyēva nabhōṅ.śubhi:৷৷1.16.25৷৷


harṣaraśmibhi: with rays of happiness, uddyōtam got brightened, tasya his, anta:puram inner apartment, abhirāmasya delightful, śāradasya autumnal, candrasya moon's, aṅśubhi: beams, nabha:iva like sky, ābabhau shone.

The inner apartment, brightened with rays of happiness, shone like the autumnal sky in the glow of the moon.
sō.nta:puraṅ praviśyaiva kausalyāmidamabravīt.

pāyasaṅ pratigṛhṇīṣva putrīyaṅ tvidamātmana:৷৷1.16.26৷৷


sa: he, anta:puram inner apartment, praviśyaiva after entering, kausalyām addressing queen Kausalya, idam these words, abravīt spoke, ātmana: for you, putrīyam bestowing sons, idam this, pāyasam Payasam, pratigṛhṇīṣva receive it.

He entered the inner apartment and addressing queen Kausalya said, "Receive this payasam which has the power to give you sons".
kausalyāyai narapati: pāyasārdhaṅ dadau tadā.

ardhādardhaṅ dadau cāpi sumitrāyai narādhipa:৷৷1.16.27৷৷

kaikēyyai cāvaśiṣṭārdhaṅ dadau putrārthakāraṇāt.

pradadau cāvaśiṣṭārdhaṅ pāyasasyāmṛtōpamam৷৷1.16.28৷৷

anucintya sumitrāyai punarēva mahīpati:.

ēvaṅ tāsāṅ dadau rājā bhāryāṇāṅ pāyasaṅ pṛthak ৷৷1.16.29৷৷


tadā then, narapati: king Dasaratha, kausalyāyai for Kausalya, pāyasārdham half of Payasa, dadau gave, narādhipa: king, ardhāt from the half portion, ardham half of it, sumitrāyai api for Sumitra also, dadau gave, avaśiṣṭārdham the remaining half, putrārthakāraṇāt for the sake of son, kaikēyyai for Kaikeyi, dadau gave, mahīpati: king, anucintya having thought over, pāyasasya Payasam, amṛtōpamam resembling ambrosia, avasiṣṭārdham the remaining half, punarēva again, sumitrāyai for Sumitra, pradadau gave, ēvam in this manner, rājā king, tāsāṅ bhāryāṇām for his wives, pṛthak separately, pāyasam Payasam, dadau gave.

Then Dasaratha gave half the portion of payasam to Kausalya, half of the remaining half to Sumitra, half of the remaining portion (one-eighth of original) to Kaikeyi for the sake of a son. On further thinking, he gave the remaining one-eighth portion to Sumitra. In this manner the king divided and distributed the payasam among his wives separately.
tāstvētatpāyasaṅ prāpya narēndrasyōttamāsstraya:.

sammānaṅ mēnirē sarvāṅ: praharṣōditacētasa:৷৷1.16.30৷৷


narēndrasya king's, uttamā: excellent, tā:striya: those women, sarvā: all, ētat this, pāyasam Payasam, prāpya having received, praharṣōditacētasa: minds filled with delight, sammānam honour mēnirē considered.

The virtuous wives of the king were exceedingly delighted and felt honoured after receiving the payasam .
tatastu tā: prāśya taduttamāstriyō

mahīpatēruttamapāyasaṅ pṛthak.

hutāśanādityasamānatējasō

.cirēṇa garbhānpratipēdirē tadā৷৷1.16.31৷৷


tataḥ then, mahīpatē: king's, tā:uttamāstriya: excellent consorts, tat uttamapāyasam that choicest Payasam, pṛthak separately, prāśya having consumed, hutāśanādityasamānatējasa: resembling glowing fire and Sun in lustre, acirēṇa after short gap of time, tadā then, garbhān pratipēdirē became pregnant.

Then the excellent consorts of the king who glowed like fire and the Sun, having consumed the choicest payasam, became pregnant in a short time.
tatastu rājā prasamīkṣya tā: striya:

prarūḍhagarbhā: pratilabdhamānasa:.

babhūva hṛṣṭastridivē yathā hari:

surēndrasiddharṣigaṇābhipūjita:৷৷1.16.32৷৷


tata: then, rājā king, prarūḍhagarbhā: pregnant women, tā: striya: those wives, prasamīkṣya having seen, pratilabdhamānasa: having regained composure of mind, tridivē in the heavens, surēndrasiddharṣigaṇābhipūjita: worshipped by Indra, hosts of siddhas and rishis, yathā hari: like Visnu, hṛṣṭa:babhūva became delighted.

The king now regained his composure of mind on seeing his pregnant wives. He looked delighted like Visnu worshipped by Indra, and hosts of siddhas and rishis.
ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīya ādikāvyē bālakāṇḍē ṣōḍaśassarga:৷৷
Thus ends the sixteenth sarga of Balakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic
composed by sage Valmiki.
