[Description of Rama's virtues- Dasaratha contemplates to install Rama as heir-apparent- Invites kings and elders from towns and villages to seek their opinion.]

ಗಚ್ಛತಾ ಮಾತುಲಕುಲಂ ಭರತೇನ ತದಾನಘ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋ ನಿತ್ಯಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೋ ನೀತಃ ಪ್ರೀತಿಪುರಸ್ಕೃತಃ৷৷2.1.1৷৷


ಮಾತುಲಕುಲಮ್ maternal uncle's house, ಗಚ್ಛತಾ set out, ಭರತೇನ by Bharata, ತದಾ then, ಅನಘ: sinless one, ನಿತ್ಯಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ: one who is always successful in destroying foes, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನ: Satrughna, ಪ್ರೀತಿಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ: endowed with affection, ನೀತ: taken.

Bharata set out for his maternal uncle's house. He took with him the sinless Satrughna who is always successful in destroying foes and on whom he had bestowed his love and affection.
ತತ್ರ ನ್ಯವಸದ್ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ ಸತ್ಕಾರಸತ್ಕೃತಃ.

ಮಾತುಲೇನಾಶ್ವಪತಿನಾ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ನೇಹೇನ ಲಾಲಿತಃ৷৷2.1.2৷৷


ಸ: he (Bharata), ಅಶ್ವಪತಿನಾ by the lord of horses (here, by Aswapati), ಮಾತುಲೇನ by his maternal uncle, ಸತ್ಕಾರಸತ್ಕೃತ: treated with warm hospitality, ಪುತ್ರಸ್ನೇಹೇನ with filial affection, ಲಾಲಿತ: was treated, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ along with his brother, ತತ್ರ there, ನ್ಯವಸತ್ stayed on.

Treated with warm hospitality and fatherly affection by his maternal uncle Aswapati, Bharata stayed on there along with his brother.
ತತ್ರಾಪಿ ನಿವಸನ್ತೌ ತೌ ತರ್ಪ್ಯಮಾಣೌ ಚ ಕಾಮತಃ.

ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ಸ್ಮರತಾಂ ವೀರೌ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್৷৷2.1.3৷৷


ವೀರೌ heroes, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ both brothers, ತತ್ರ there, ನಿವಸನ್ತೌ while living, ಕಾಮತ: of their own accord, ತರ್ಪ್ಯಮಾಣೌ ಚಾಪಿ even though satisfied, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ aged, ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್ king Dasaratha, ಸ್ಮರತಾಮ್ (constanly) remembered.

Though both the heroic brothers stayed there satisfied on their own they constantly remembered their aged father.
ರಾಜಾಪಿ ತೌ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಸ್ಸಸ್ಮಾರ ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೌ ಸುತೌ.

ಉಭೌ ಭರತಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರವರುಣೋಪಮೌ৷৷2.1.4৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: brilliant, ರಾಜಾಪಿ the king also, ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರವರುಣೋಪಮೌ equal to great Indra and Varuna, ಪ್ರೋಷಿತೌ who were away from home, ಸುತೌ sons, ಭರತಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೌ ಉಭೌ both Bharata and Satrughna, ಸಸ್ಮಾರ remembered.

The glorious king Dasaratha also remembered his sons, Bharata and Satrughna, who were like the great Indra and Varuna, (now) away from home.
ಸರ್ವ ಏವ ತು ತಸ್ಯೇಷ್ಟಾ ಶ್ಚತ್ವಾರಃ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಾಃ.

ಸ್ವಶರೀರಾದ್ವಿನಿರ್ವೃತ್ತಾಶ್ಚತ್ವಾರ ಇವ ಬಾಹವಃ৷৷2.1.5৷৷


ಚತ್ವಾರ: four, ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಾ: bull among men, ಸರ್ವೇ ಏವ ತು all of them, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಸ್ವಶರೀರಾತ್ from his body, ನಿರ್ವೃತ್ತಾ: originated, ಚತ್ವಾರ: four, ಬಾಹವ: ಇವ just as arms, ಇಷ್ಟಾ: dear

Dasaratha, a bull among men, loved all his four sons equally just as the arms of his own body.
ತೇಷಾಮಪಿ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ರಾಮೋ ರತಿಕರಃಪಿತುಃ.

ಸ್ವಯಮ್ಭೂರಿವ ಭೂತಾನಾಂ ಬಭೂವ ಗುಣವತ್ತರಃ৷৷2.1.6৷৷


ಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ to all living beings, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ಭೂರಿವ like the Self-born (Brahma), ತೇಷಾಮಪಿ among them also, ಗುಣವತ್ತರಃ virtuous, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ: effulgent, ರಾಮ: Rama, ಪಿತು: to the father, ರತಿಕರ: was a source of delight, ಬಭೂವ became.

Even among them the brilliant Rama was a source of delight to his father like the Self-born (Brahma) to all living beings.
ಸ ಹಿ ದೇವೈರುದೀರ್ಣಸ್ಯ ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ ವಧಾರ್ಥಿಭಿಃ.

ಅರ್ಥಿತೋ ಮಾನುಷೇ ಲೋಕೇ ಜಜ್ಞೇ ವಿಷ್ಣುಸ್ಸನಾತನಃ৷৷2.1.7৷৷


ಸನಾತನ: the eternal, ವಿಷ್ಣು: Visnu, ಉದೀರ್ಣಸ್ಯ ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ arrogant Ravana's, ವಧಾರ್ಥಿಭಿ: by those desirous of slaying, ದೇವೈ: by devatas, ಅರ್ಥಿತ: entreated, ಮಾನುಷೇ ಲೋಕೇ in the mortal world, ಸ: he (Rama), ಜಜ್ಞೇ ಹಿ was born indeed.

Entreated by the devatas desirous of slaying arrogant Ravana, the eternal Visnu was indeed born in the mortal world as Rama.
ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ ಶುಶುಭೇ ತೇನ ಪುತ್ರೇಣಾಮಿತತೇಜಸಾ.

ಯಥಾ ವರೇಣ ದೇವಾನಾಮದಿತಿರ್ವಜ್ರಪಾಣಿನಾ৷৷2.1.8৷৷


ಅಮಿತತೇಜಸಾ of boundless energy, ಪುತ್ರೇಣ with son, ತೇನ by him, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ದೇವಾನಾಂ ವರೇಣ with the excellent among the devatas, ವಜ್ರಪಾಣಿನಾ with the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra), ಅದಿತಿರ್ಯಥಾ like Aditi, ಶುಶುಭೇ looked splendid.

Kausalya looked splendid with her son, Rama of boundless energy, as did Aditi with the chief of the gods Indra, wielder of thunder.
ಸ ಹಿ ರೂಪೋಪಪನ್ನಶ್ಚ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನನಸೂಯಕಃ.

ಭೂಮೌವನುಪಮಸ್ಸೂನುರ್ಗುಣೈರ್ದಶರಥೋಪಮಃ৷৷2.1.9৷৷


ಸ: he (Rama), ರೂಪೋಪಪನ್ನ: ಚ handsome too, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ energetic, ಅನಸೂಯಕ: free from envy, ಗುಣೈ: by virtues, ದಶರಥೋಪಮ: equal to Dasaratha, ಭೂಮೌ on this earth, ಅನುಪಮ: incomparable, ಸೂನು: ಹಿ
son he was.

Endowed with beauty and strengh, free from envy, and in virtues equal to Dasaratha, Rama was verily an incomparable son on earth.
ಸ ತು ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಶಾನ್ತಾತ್ಮಾ ಮೃದುಪೂರ್ವಂ ಚ ಭಾಷತೇ.

ಉಚ್ಯಮಾನೋಪಿ ಪರುಷಂ ನೋತ್ತರಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.1.10৷৷


ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಪ್ರಶಾನ್ತಾತ್ಮಾ one with a calm and serene mind, ಸ: he (Rama), ಮೃದುಪೂರ್ವಮ್ gently, ಭಾಷತೇ speaks, ಪರುಷಮ್ harsh words, ಉಚ್ಯಮಾನ: ಅಪಿ though addressed, ಉತ್ತರಮ್ reply, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಪದ್ಯತೇ does not speak.

With an unfailing serenity of mind, Rama never paid back harshness with harshness.
ಕಥಞ್ಚಿದುಪಕಾರೇಣ ಕೃತೇನೈಕೇನ ತುಷ್ಯತಿ.

ನ ಸ್ಮರತ್ಯಪಕಾರಾಣಾಂ ಶತಮಪ್ಯಾತ್ಮವತ್ತಯಾ৷৷2.1.11৷৷


ಆತ್ಮವತ್ತಯಾ with self-restraint, ಸ: he (Rama), ಕಥಞ್ಚಿತ್ somehow, ಕೃತೇನ done (by some one), ಏಕೇನ single, ಉಪಕಾರೇಣ benefit rendered, ತುಷ್ಯತಿ is pleased, ಅಪಕಾರಾಣಾಮ್ offences, ಶತಮಪಿ even a hundred, ನ ಸ್ಮರತಿ does not remember.

Gifted with self-restraint, Rama was pleased even with a single benefit done somehow to him, yet did not remember even a hundred offences committed by others.
ಶೀಲವೃದ್ಧೈರ್ಜ್ಞಾನವೃದ್ಧೈರ್ವಯೋವೃದ್ಧೈಶ್ಚ ಸಜ್ಜನೈಃ.

ಕಥಯನ್ನಾಸ್ತ ವೈ ನಿತ್ಯಮಸ್ತ್ರಯೋಗ್ಯಾನ್ತರೇಷ್ವಪಿ৷৷2.1.12৷৷


ಅಸ್ತ್ರಯೋಗ್ಯಾನ್ತರೇಷ್ವಪಿ even at intervals during the practice of weapons, ಶೀಲವೃದ್ಧೈ: rich in virtues, ಜ್ಞಾನವೃದ್ಧೈ: mature in wisdom, ವಯೋವೃದ್ಧೈಶ್ಚ aged, ಸಜ್ಜನೈ: saintly persons, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಕಥಯನ್ ಆಸ್ತೇ interacts.

Even during intervals of his practice of weapons he never failed to interact with saintly persons and with people advanced in age, virtue and wisdom.
ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ಮಧುರಾಭಾಷೀ ಪೂರ್ವಭಾಷೀ ಪ್ರಿಯಂವದಃ.

ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ನ ಚ ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ ಮಹತಾ ಸ್ವೇನ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಃ৷৷2.1.13৷৷


ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ wise, ಮಧುರಾಭಾಷೀ soft-spoken, ಪೂರ್ವಭಾಷೀ first to address, ಪ್ರಿಯಂವದ: speaks pleasing words, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ valiant, ಮಹತಾ overwhelming, ಸ್ವೇನ relating to his own, ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ at his strength, ನ ಚ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತ: surprised (here, proud).

Wise and soft-spoken, he was the first to speak to others words pleasing to hear. Though mighty, he was never proud of his overwhelming strength.
ನಚಾನೃತಕಥೋ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಕಃ.

ಅನುರಕ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಜಾಭಿಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಜಾಶ್ಚಾಪ್ಯನುರಞ್ಜತೇ৷৷2.1.14৷৷


ಅನೃತಕಥ: ನ ಚ never indulged in falsehood, ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ learned, ವೃದ್ಧಾನಾಮ್ of elders, ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಕ: honours them by going forward, ಪ್ರಜಾಭಿ: by his subjects, ಅನುರಕ್ತ: was loved, ಪ್ರಜಾಶ್ಚಾಪಿ also his subjects, ಅನುರಞ್ಜತೇ loves.

Rama never told lies. He was a learned man. He honoured elders by going forward to them. He loved his subjects as much as his subjects loved him.
ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶೋ ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧೋ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಕಃ.

ದೀನಾನುಕಮ್ಪೀ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೋ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹವಾಂಶ್ಚುಚಿಃ৷৷2.1.15৷৷


ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶ: compassionate ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧ: one who has conquered anger, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಕ: worshipper of brahmins, ದೀನಾನುಕಮ್ಪೀ compassionate to the distressed, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞ: one who knows (follows) righteousness, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹವಾನ್ self-restrained, ಶುಚಿ: pure in spirit.

He was kind-hearted and compassionate to the distressed, cool-headed and righteous. A worshipper of brahmins he was always self-restrained and pure in spirit.
ಕುಲೋಚಿತಮತಿಃ ಕ್ಷಾತ್ರಂ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಸ್ವಂ ಬಹುಮನ್ಯತೇ.

ಮನ್ಯತೇ ಪರಯಾ ಕೀರ್ತ್ಯಾ ಮಹತ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗಫಲಂ ತತಃ৷৷2.1.16৷৷


ಕುಲೋಚಿತಮತಿಃ having thoughts befitting his dynasty, ಸ್ವಮ್ his own, ಕ್ಷಾತ್ರಂ ಧರ್ಮಮ್ code of conduct relating to kshatriyas, ಬಹುಮನ್ಯತೇ honours, ತತಃ from that, ಕೀರ್ತ್ಯಾ with glory, ಮಹತ್ great, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಫಲಮ್ fruits of heaven, ಮನ್ಯತೇ considers.

He entertained thoughts befitting his (great) dynasty and honoured the code of conduct of a kshatriya. He believed one could attain heavenly abode through his great achievements.
ನಾಶ್ರೇಯಸಿ ರತೋ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ನವಿರುದ್ಧಕಥಾರುಚಿಃ.

ಉತ್ತರೋತ್ತರಯುಕ್ತೌ ಚ ವಕ್ತಾ ವಾಚಸ್ಪತಿರ್ಯಥಾ৷৷2.1.17৷৷


ಅಶ್ರೇಯಸಿ pursuits not conducive to one's welfare, ರತಃ ನ not interested, ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ learned, ವಿರುದ್ಧಕಥಾರುಚಿಃ ನ not interested in speaking against others, ಉತ್ತರೋತ್ತರಯುಕ್ತೌ in debates, ವಾಚಸ್ಪತಿ: ಯಥಾ like Brihaspati, ವಕ್ತಾ an orator

A learned man, he evinced no interest in pursuits that did not contribute to one's welfare or had he any liking for speaking against others. But in debates his oratorical flourish was comparable to Brihaspati's.
ಅರೋಗಸ್ತರುಣೋ ವಾಗ್ಮೀ ವಪುಷ್ಮಾನ್ದೇಶಕಾಲವಿತ್.

ಲೋಕೇ ಪುರುಷಸಾರಜ್ಞ ಸ್ಸಾಧುರೇಕೋ ವಿನಿರ್ಮಿತಃ৷৷2.1.18৷৷


ಅರೋಗಃ free from disease, ತರುಣಃ young, ವಾಗ್ಮೀ eloquent, ವಪುಷ್ಮಾನ್ healthy, ದೇಶಕಾಲವಿತ್ aware of time and place, ಪುರುಷಸಾರಜ್ಞಃ a judge of men's worth, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ವಿನಿರ್ಮಿತಃ created, ಏಕಃ one, ಸಾಧುಃ a sage.

He was young, eloquent, healthy and free from disease. He was conscious of (right) time and place (for his pursuits). He was capable of ascertaining the potentiality of
men. He was born a sage in this world.
ಸ ತು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈರ್ಗುಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಂ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ಬಹಿಶ್ಚರ ಇವ ಪ್ರಾಣೋ ಬಭೂವ ಗುಣತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.1.19৷৷


ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೈ: excellent, ಗುಣೈಃ with qualities, ಯುಕ್ತಃ bestowed with, ಸಃ he, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾತ್ಮಜಃ king's son, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್ for his subjects, ಗುಣತಃ by his virtues, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ favourite one, ಬಹಿಶ್ಚರಃ exterior, ಪ್ರಾಣಃ ಇವ like vital life, ಬಭೂವ became.

Bestowed with such excellent qualities, the prince (Rama) became a favourite of his subjects. He was like their vital life outside their bodies.
ಸಮ್ಯಗ್ವಿದ್ಯಾವ್ರತಸ್ನಾತೋ ಯಥಾವತ್ಸಾಙ್ಗವೇದವಿತ್.

ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರೇ ಚ ಪಿತು ಶ್ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೋ ಬಭೂವ ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜಃ৷৷2.1.20৷৷


ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ thoroughly, ವಿದ್ಯಾವ್ರತಸ್ನಾತಃ had the sacred ablution marking the completion of the vow relating to the respective branches of learning, ಯಥಾವತ್ in accordance with tradition, ಸಾಙ್ಗವೇದವಿತ್ knew Vedas along with its auxiliary sciences, ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜಃ elder brother of Bharata, ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರೇ in the science of archery, ಪಿತುಃ for father, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ: best, ಬಭೂವ became.

With the appropriate sacred ablution marking the completion of the vow relating to the respective branches of learning in accordance with tradition, this elder brother of Bharata achieved proficiency in the Vedas and its auxiliary sciences. He surpassed his father in archery.
ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿಜನ ಸ್ಸಾಧುರದೀನ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯವಾಗೃಜುಃ.

ವೃದ್ಧೈರಭಿವಿನೀತಶ್ಚ ದ್ವಿಜೈರ್ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥದರ್ಶಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.1.21৷৷


ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿಜನಃ born in a family of noble descent, ಸಾಧುಃ saintly person, ಅದೀನಃ one without meanness, ಸತ್ಯವಾಕ್ one truthful in his words, ಋಜುಃ man of rectitude, ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥದರ್ಶಿಭಿಃ by those who are conversant in dharma and artha, ವೃದ್ಧೈಃ by the aged, ದ್ವಿಜೈಃ by brahmins, ಅಭಿವಿನೀತಃ well-disciplined.

Born in a family of noble descent, he was saintly. A man without meanness.He was truthful and a man of rectitude. The training he received under aged brahmins conversant with dharma and artha made him well-disciplined.
ಧರ್ಮಕಾಮಾರ್ಥತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞಃ ಸ್ಮೃತಿಮಾನ್ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್.

ಲೌಕಿಕೇ ಸಮಯಾಚಾರೇ ಕೃತಕಲ್ಪೋ ವಿಶಾರದಃ৷৷2.1.22৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಕಾಮಾರ್ಥತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞಃ knower of true nature of dharma, artha and kama, ಸ್ಮೃತಿಮಾನ್ of (sharp) memory, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್ of great genius, ಲೌಕಿಕೇ ಸಮಯಾಚಾರೇ in social practices and customs, ಕೃತಕಲ್ಪಃ accomplished in Kalpa (vedic rituals), ವಿಶಾರದಃ highly skilled.

He knew the true nature of dharma, artha and kama. With a sharp memory, he was a genius. He was highly skilled in accomplishing tasks related to social practices and customs.
ನಿಭೃತ ಸ್ಸಂವೃತಾಕಾರೋ ಗುಪ್ತಮನ್ತ್ರ ಸ್ಸಹಾಯವಾನ್.

ಅಮೋಘಕ್ರೋಧಹರ್ಷಶ್ಚ ತ್ಯಾಗಸಂಯಮಕಾಲವಿತ್৷৷2.1.23৷৷


ನಿಭೃತಃ modest, ಸಂವೃತಾಕಾರಃ one who concealed his feelings without any outward manifestation, ಗುಪ್ತಮನ್ತ್ರ: one who counselled in secrecy, ಸಹಾಯವಾನ್ having good friends, ಅಮೋಘಕ್ರೋಧಹರ್ಷಶ್ಚ his anger or pleasure did not go vain, ತ್ಯಾಗಸಂಯಮಕಾಲವಿತ್ knows the occasion when to sacrifice and when to excercise restraint.

He (Rama) was modest and did not reveal his inner feelings. He counselled in secrecy and had good friends. Never was his anger or pleasure in vain. He knew the occasion when to sacrifce and when to exercise restraint.
ದೃಢಭಕ್ತಿ ಸ್ಸ್ಥಿರಪ್ರಜ್ಞೋ ನಾಸದ್ಗ್ರಾಹೀ ನ ದುರ್ವಚಾಃ.

ನಿಸ್ತನ್ದ್ರಿರಪ್ರಮತ್ತಶ್ಚ ಸ್ವದೋಷಪರದೋಷವಿತ್৷৷2.1.24৷৷


ದೃಢಭಕ್ತಿಃ was firm in his devotion, ಸ್ಥಿರಪ್ರಜ್ಞಃ possessed a steady intellect, ಅಸದ್ಗ್ರಾಹೀ ನ not
one to accept anything ignoble, ದುರ್ವಚಾಃ ನ no bad words, ನಿಸ್ತನ್ದ್ರಿ: devoid of idleness, ಅಪ್ರಮತ್ತಃ not swayed by emotions, ಸ್ವದೋಷಪರದೋಷವಿತ್ knew his faults as well as of others.

He was firm in his devotion and steady in intellect. He accepted nothing ignoble nor used bad words. He was not swayed by emotions or prone to idleness. He knew his faults as well as of others.
ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಕೃತಜ್ಞಶ್ಚ ಪುರುಷಾನ್ತರಕೋವಿದಃ.

ಯಃ ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಾನುಗ್ರಹಯೋರ್ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಂ ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ৷৷2.1.25৷৷


ಯಃ who (he), ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞಃ ಚ well-versed in scriptures, ಕೃತಜ್ಞಃ ಚ was grateful, ಪುರುಷಾನ್ತರಕೋವಿದ: skilled in differentiating the comparative merits of men, ಯಥಾನ್ಯಾಯಮ್ in accordance with justice, ಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಾನುಗ್ರಹಯೋಃ in reprimanding and favouring, ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ was a skilled one.

He was versed in scriptures. He was grateful (to those who did him some good) and skilled in differentiating the comparative merits of men. Fair in his judgement he dispensed justice in accordance with law by reprimanding (the delinquent) and favouring (the honest).
ಸತ್ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಹಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಣೇ ಸ್ಥಾನವಿನ್ನಿಗ್ರಹಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಆಯಕರ್ಮಣ್ಯುಪಾಯಜ್ಞ ಸ್ಸನ್ದೃಷ್ಟವ್ಯಯಕರ್ಮವಿತ್৷৷2.1.26৷৷


ಸತ್ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಹಪ್ರಗ್ರಹಣೇ in receiving and encouraging the righteous, ನಿಗ್ರಹಸ್ಯ ಚ in restraining also, ಸ್ಥಾನವಿತ್ knower of right means, ಆಯಕರ್ಮಣಿ in acts of raising revenue, ಉಪಾಯಜ್ಞಃ knower of means, ಸನ್ by being so, ದೃಷ್ಟವ್ಯಯಕರ್ಮವಿತ್ expending money in the prescribed manner.

He was skilled in receiving and encouraging the righteous and in punishing (the wicked). He knew whom to punish. He knew the right means of raising revenue and also expending money in the prescribed manner.
ಶ್ರೈಷ್ಠ್ಯಂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಸಮೂಹೇಷು ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೋ ವ್ಯಾಮಿಶ್ರಕೇಷು ಚ.

ಅರ್ಥಧಮೌ ಚ ಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ ಸುಖತನ್ತ್ರೋ ನ ಚಾಲಸಃ৷৷2.1.27৷৷


ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಸಮೂಹೇಷು in scriptures, ವ್ಯಾಮಿಶ್ರಕೇಷು ಚ also in the mutually interconnected (and which are mutually contradictory) branches of learning, ಶ್ರೈಷ್ಠ್ಯಮ್ proficiency, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ obtained, ಅರ್ಥಧರ್ಮೌ in artha and dharma, ಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ having grasped, ಸುಖತನ್ತ್ರಃ sought pleasure, ಅಲಸಃ ನ not indolent.

He obtained proficiency in scriptures and interconnected (mutually contradictory) branches of learning. Only after having grasped the (philosophy of) artha (statecraft) and dharma (righteousness), he sought pleasure. He was never indolent.
ವೈಹಾರಿಕಾಣಾಂ ಶಿಲ್ಪಾನಾಂ ವಿಜ್ಞಾತಾರ್ಥವಿಭಾಗವಿತ್.

ಆರೋಹೇ ವಿನಯೇ ಚೈವ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ವಾರಣವಾಜಿನಾಮ್৷৷2.1.28৷৷


ವೈಹಾರಿಕಾಣಾಮ್ meant for entertainment, ಶಿಲ್ಪಾನಾಮ್ of art and craft, ವಿಜ್ಞಾತಾ one who understood, ಅರ್ಥವಿಭಾಗವಿತ್ one who knows how to dispense wealth, ವಾರಣವಾಜಿನಾಮ್ on elephants and horses, ಆರೋಹೇ in mounting, ವಿನಯೇ ಚೈವ in humbling, ಯುಕ್ತಃ was experienced.

He had understanding of art and craft useful for entertainment. He knew proper ways of dispensing wealth. He was experienced in riding elephants and horses and in humbling them.
ಧನುರ್ವೇದವಿದಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೋ ಲೋಕೇತಿರಥಸಮ್ಮತಃ.

ಅಭಿಯಾತಾ ಪ್ರಹರ್ತಾ ಚ ಸೇನಾನಯವಿಶಾರದಃ৷৷2.1.29৷৷


ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಧನುರ್ವೇದವಿದಾಮ್ among those skilled in archery, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ excellent, ಅತಿರಥಸಮ್ಮತ: reckoned as a great wielder of war-chariots by his equals, ಅಭಿಯಾತಾ advanced towards his enemies, ಪ್ರಹರ್ತಾ ಚ striking at them, ಸೇನಾನಯವಿಶಾರದಃ expert in commanding troops.

He was the best among those skilled in archery in this world. He was reckoned as a great wielder of war-chariots and one who strikes at the enemies by advancing towards them. He was an expert in commanding troops. (Atiratha is an excellent warrior who can manage his chariot, horses and the charioteer.)
ಅಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇ ಕ್ರುಧ್ದೈರಪಿ ಸುರಾಸುರೈಃ.

ಅನಸೂಯೋ ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧೋ ನ ದೃಪ್ತೋ ನ ಚ ಮತ್ಸರೀ.

ನ ಚಾವಮನ್ತಾ ಭೂತಾನಾಂ ನ ಚ ಕಾಲವಶಾನುಗಃ৷৷2.1.30৷৷


ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೈಃ by the enraged, ಸುರಾಸುರೈರಪಿ even by devatas or rakshasas, ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇ in the battle, ಅಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಃ was incapable of being repressed, ಅನಸೂಯಃ free from envy, ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧಃ subdued his anger, ನ ದೃಪ್ತಃ was not proud of, ಮತ್ಸರೀ ಚ ನ was not malicious, ಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ among living beings, ನಚ ಅವಮನ್ತಾ never slighted, ಕಾಲವಶಾನುಗಃ ಚ ನ did not bow to the pressure of time

He was incapable of being repressed even by the enraged devatas or rakshasas in the battle. He was free from envy and had subdued his anger and pride. He was never malicious and he never slighted any living being nor did he bow to the pressure of time.
ಏವಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಗುಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಂ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾತ್ಮಜಃ.

ಸಮ್ಮತಸ್ತ್ರಿಷು ಲೋಕೇಷು ವಸುಧಾಯಾಃ ಕ್ಷಮಾಗುಣೈಃ৷৷2.1.31৷৷

ಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇಸ್ತುಲ್ಯೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇಣಾಪಿ ಶಚೀಪತೇಃ.


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಗುಣೈಃ with excellent qualities, ಯುಕ್ತಃ endowed, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾತ್ಮಜಃ son of the king, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್ for his subjects, ತ್ರಿಷು ಲೋಕೇಷು in the three worlds, ಸಮ್ಮತಃ was held in high esteem, ಕ್ಷಮಾಗುಣೈಃ by the quality of forbearance, ವಸುಧಾಯಾಃ by earth, ಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ by his intelligence, ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇಃ with Brihaspati's, ವೀರ್ಯೇಣ by prowess, ಶಚೀಪತೇಃ consort of Sachi (Indra), ತುಲ್ಯಃ equal.

Thus endowed with such excellent qualities, the subjects in the three worlds held him in high esteem. In forbearance he was like the earth, in wisdom like Brihaspati and in prowess like the consort of Sachi (Indra).
ತಥಾ ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಕಾನ್ತೈಃ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಂಜನನೈಃ ಪಿತುಃ৷৷2.1.32৷৷

ಗುಣೈರ್ವಿರುರುಚೇ ರಾಮೋ ದೀಪ್ತಸ್ಸೂರ್ಯ ಇವಾಂಶುಭಿಃ.


ತಥಾ thus, ಸರ್ವಪ್ರಜಾಕಾನ್ತೈ: cherished by all his subjects, ಪಿತುಃ for his father, ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಂಜನನೈಃ a source of delight, ಗುಣೈಃ by virtues, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಅಂಶುಭಿಃ with rays, ದೀಪ್ತಃ resplendent, ಸೂರ್ಯಃ ಇವ like the Sun, ವಿರುರುಚೇ shone.

Rama whose virtues were cherished by all his subjects was a source of delight to his father and he shone like the rays of the resplendent Sun.
ತಮೇವಂ ವ್ರತಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.1.33৷৷

ಲೋಕ ಪಾಲೋಪಮಂ ನಾಥಮಕಾಮಯತ ಮೇದಿನೀ.


ಏವಂ ವ್ರತಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ enriched with such avowed virtues, ಅಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ a man with indomitable prowess, ಲೋಕಪಾಲೋಪಮಮ್ equal to guardians of the quarters, ತಮ್ him, ಮೇದಿನೀ the earth, ನಾಥಮ್ as lord, ಅಕಾಮಯತ desired.

The earth desired him as her lord, for he was bestowed with such avowed virtues and with indomitable prowess equal to all the guardians of the quarters.
ಏತೈಸ್ತು ಬಹುಭಿರ್ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಗುಣೈರನುಪಮೈಸ್ಸುತಮ್৷৷2.1.34৷৷

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ದಶರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ಚಕ್ರೇ ಚಿನ್ತಾಂ ಪರನ್ತಪಃ.


ಪರನ್ತಪಃ subduer of enemies, ದಶರಥಃ ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ಅನುಪಮೈಃ with incomparable, ಬಹುಭಿಃ innumerable, ಏತೈಃ these, ಗುಣೈಃ qualities, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with, ಸುತಮ್ his son, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಚಿನ್ತಾಮ್ ಚಕ್ರೇ contemplated.

Observing his son endowed with such innumerable and incomparable virtues, king Dasaratha, subduer of enemies started thinking.
ಅಥ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ಬಭೂವೈವಂ ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ಯ ಚಿರಜೀವಿನಃ৷৷2.1.35৷৷

ಪ್ರೀತಿರೇಷಾ ಕಥಂ ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜಾ ಸ್ಯಾನ್ಮಯಿ ಜೀವತಿ.


ಅಥ thereafter, ಚಿರಜೀವಿನಃ a man of long life, ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ಯ of the aged, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king, ಮಯಿ me, ಜೀವತಿ while living, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ರಾಜಾ king, ಕಥಂ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ how will he become?, ಏಷಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿಃ this
pleasure, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಬಭೂವ a (thought) flashed

Thereafter, flashed in the mind of that aged king who had (already) lived long this pleasant thought as to how Rama will become king while he was alive.
ಏಷಾ ಹ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಪರಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿರ್ಹೃದಿ ಸಂಪರಿವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.1.36৷৷

ಕದಾ ನಾಮ ಸುತಂ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ಯಭಿಷಿಕ್ತಮಹಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅಭಿಷಿಕ್ತಮ್ coronate, ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಸುತಮ್ dear son, ಕದಾ ನಾಮ oh when, ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ can I see, ಏಷಾ this, ಪರಾ great, ಪ್ರೀತಿಃ pleasure, ಅಸ್ಯ his, ಹೃದಿ in heart, ಸಂಪರಿವರ್ತತೇ ಹಿ repeatedly surfaced.

The thought of seeing his dear son coronated repeatedly surfaced his mind so great was his affection (for Rama).
ವೃದ್ಧಿಕಾಮೋ ಹಿ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನುಕಮ್ಪನಃ৷৷2.1.37৷৷

ಮತ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯತರೋ ಲೋಕೇ ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯ ಇವ ವೃಷ್ಟಿಮಾನ್.


ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ for this world, ವೃದ್ಧಿಕಾಮಃ desires to promote prosperity, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನುಕಮ್ಪನ: that (Rama) one who showed kindness to all living beings, ವೃಷ್ಟಿಮಾನ್ possessing rain, ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯ: ಇವ like Parjanya, the rain-god, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಮತ್ತಃ than me, ಪ್ರಿಯತರಃ ಹಿ is dearer to all people.

(He said to himself) 'his (Rama's) only desire is to promote the prosperity of this world. He is one who shows compassion to all beings and is like the rain-god dearer than me to the people of the world'.
ಯಮಶಕ್ರಸಮೋ ವೀರ್ಯೇ ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತಿಸಮೋ ಮತೌ৷৷2.1.38৷৷

ಮಹೀಧರಸಮೋ ಧೃತ್ಯಾಂ ಮತ್ತಶ್ಚ ಗುಣವತ್ತರಃ.


ವೀರ್ಯೇ in prowess, ಯಮಶಕ್ರಸಮಃ equal to Yama and Indra, ಮತೌ in wisdom, ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತಿ ಸಮಃ equal to Brihaspati, ಧೃತ್ಯಾಮ್ in firmness, ಮಹೀಧರಸಮಃ equal to a mountain, ಮತ್ತಃ ಚ than me also, ಗುಣವತ್ತರಃ a man of greater virtues.

'In prowess he is equal to Yama and Indra,in wisdom to Brihaspati and in firmness to a mountain and in virtues greater than me'.
ಮಹೀಮಹಮಿಮಾಂ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಮಧಿತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಮಾತ್ಮಜಮ್৷৷2.1.39৷৷

ಅನೇನ ವಯಸಾ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಯಥಾಸ್ವರ್ಗಮವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್.


ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಮ್ entire dominion, ಇಮಾಮ್ this, ಮಹೀಮ್ earth, ಅಧಿತಿಷ್ಠನ್ತಮ್ established, ಆತ್ಮಜಮ್ son, ಅನೇನ in this, ವಯಸಾ age, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಯಥಾ as if, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಅವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್ will attain.

'Seeing my son ruling this entire dominion of the earth, I will experience the bliss of attaining heaven at this age.'
ಇತ್ಯೇತೈರ್ವಿವಿಧೈಸ್ತೈಸ್ತೈರನ್ಯಪಾರ್ಥಿವದುರ್ಲಭೈಃ৷৷2.1.40৷৷

ಶಿಷ್ಟೈರಪರಿಮೇಯೈಶ್ಚ ಲೋಕೇ ಲೋಕೋತ್ತರೈರ್ಗುಣೈಃ.

ತಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಸಮುದಿತೈಶ್ಶುಭೈಃ৷৷2.1.41৷৷

ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಸಚಿವೈಸ್ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಯುವರಾಜಮಮನ್ಯತ.


ಇತಿ in this manner, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ various, ಅನ್ಯಪಾರ್ಥಿವದುರ್ಲಭೈಃ not found in other kings, ತೈ: ತೈ: by respective, ಏತೈಃ with these virtues, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಅಪರಿಮೇಯೈಃ immeasurable, ಲೋಕೋತ್ತರೈಃ distinguished in this world, ಸಮುದಿತೈಃ all converged at one place, ಶುಭೈಃ auspicious, ಶಿಷ್ಟೈಃ praiseworthy, ಗುಣೈಃ virtues, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ endowed with, ತಮ್ him, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having observed, ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ king (Dasaratha), ಸಚಿವೈಃ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ with his ministers, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ having decided, ಯುವರಾಜಮ್ as prince-regent, ಅಮನ್ಯತ thought.

King Dasaratha in consultation with his ministers observed that Rama is endowed with various virtues not found in other kings, immeasurable virtues which are praiseworthy, and exemplary. He is distinguished in this world as all qualities seem to have merged in him. The king then made up his mind to make him prince-regent.
ದಿವ್ಯನ್ತರಿಕ್ಷೇ ಭೂಮೌ ಚ ಘೋರಮುತ್ಪಾತಜಂ ಭಯಮ್৷৷2.1.42৷৷

ಸ್ಚಚಕ್ಷೇಥ ಮೇಧಾವೀ ಶರೀರೇ ಚಾತ್ಮನೋ ಜರಾಮ್.


ಅಥ thereafter, ಮೇಧಾವೀ sagacious (Dasaratha), ದಿವಿ in heaven, ಅನ್ತರಿಕ್ಷೇ in the sky, ಭೂಮೌ ಚ on earth, ಉತ್ಪಾತಜಮ್ portentous omens, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his, ಶರೀರೇ in the body, ಜರಾಂ ಚ old age also, ಸಞ್ಚಚಕ್ಷೇ perceived.

The sagacious king, too perceived his body ageing and the portentous omens in the heaven, in the sky and on the earth causing dreadful concern.
ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರಾನನಸ್ಯಾಥ ಶೋಕಾಪನುದಮಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.1.43৷৷

ಲೋಕೇ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಬುಬುಧೇ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಿಯತ್ವಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.


ಅಥ afterwards, ಪೂರ್ಣಚನ್ದ್ರಾನನಸ್ಯ having countenance resembling the full Moon, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the noble, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಆತ್ಮನಃ his, ಶೋಕಾಪನುದಮ್ dispeller of grief, ಲೋಕೇ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಿಯತ್ವಮ್ he being a favourite of the people, ಬುಬುಧೇ realised.

The king realised afterwards that his grief would be dispelled if noble Rama whose countenance resembled the full moon and who was a favourite of the people is crowned.
ಆತ್ಮನಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಂ ಚ ಶ್ರೇಯಸೇ ಚ ಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ ಚ৷৷2.1.44৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲೇನ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ತ್ವರಿತವಾನ್ ನೃಪಃ.


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous ನೃಪಃ king, ಆತ್ಮನಶ್ಚ of his own, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಂ ಚ of his subjects, ಶ್ರೇಯಸೇ ಚ for the welfare, ಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ ಚ with much love, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲೇನ proper time having come, ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ with longing, ತ್ವರಿತವಾನ್ hastened.

Longing for it, the noble king realized that the time was ripe for the acceleration of the process of safeguarding his own and his subjects' welfare.
ನಾನಾನಗರವಾಸ್ತವ್ಯಾನ್ಪೃಥಗ್ಜಾನಪದಾನಪಿ৷৷2.1.46৷৷

ಸಮಾನಿನಾಯ ಮೇದಿನ್ಯಾಃ ಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್ಪೃಥಿವೀಪತೀನ್.


ನಾನಾನಗರವಾಸ್ತವ್ಯಾನ್ residents of various cities, ಜಾನಪದಾನಪಿ villagers also, ಮೇದಿನ್ಯಾಃ of this earth, ಪ್ರಧಾನಾನ್ important persons exercising authority, ಪೃಥಿವೀಪತೀನ್ kings, ಪೃಥಕ್ separately, ಸಮಾನಿನಾಯ summoned.

He summoned individually kings and all important citizens residing in various cities and villages of this earth.
ನ ತು ಕೇಕಯರಾಜಾನಂ ಜನಕಂ ವಾ ನರಾಧಿಪಃ৷৷2.1.46৷৷

ತ್ವರಯಾ ಚಾನಯಾಮಾಸ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತೌ ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.


ನರಾಧಿಪಃ the king (Dasaratha), ತ್ವರಯಾ in haste, ಕೇಕಯರಾಜಾನಮ್ king of Kekaya country, ಜನಕಂ ವಾ or Janaka, ತೌ both of them, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ glad news, ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ afterwards, ಶ್ರೋಷ್ಯತಃ would hear, ನ ಆನಯಾಮಾಸ did not summon.

The king did not invite both the kings of Kekaya and Janaka in haste with an intention that they would hear the glad news at a later date.
ತಾನ್ವೇಶ್ಮನಾನಾಭರಣೈರ್ಯಥಾರ್ಹಂ ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಿತಾನ್৷৷2.1.47৷৷

ದದರ್ಶಾಲಙ್ಕೃತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿರಿವ ಪ್ರಜಾಃ.


ವೇಶ್ಮನಾನಾಭರಣೈಃ houses and ornaments, ಯಥಾರ್ಹಮ್ in a befitting manner, ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜಿತಾನ್ having been received respectfully, ತಾನ್ all of them, ರಾಜಾ king (Dasaratha), ಅಲಙ್ಕೃತಃ adorned, ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಃ lord Brahma, ಪ್ರಜಾಃ ಇವ like people, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

The king who received them in a befitting manner and provided them with residence and ornaments looked like lord Brahma adorned by the people.
ಅಥೋಪವಿಷ್ಟೇ ನೃಪತೌ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಪರಬಲಾರ್ದನೇ৷৷2.1.48৷৷

ತತಃ ಪ್ರವಿವಿಶು ಶ್ಶೇಷಾ ರಾಜಾನೋ ಲೋಕಸಮ್ಮತಾಃ.


ಅಥ then, ಪರಬಲಾರ್ದನೇ tormenter of the enemy forces, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that, ನೃಪತೌ king, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟೇ when he was seated, ತತಃ thereafter, ಲೋಕಸಮ್ಮತಾಃ beloved of their subjects, ಶೇಷಾಃ remaining, ರಾಜಾನಃ kings, ಪ್ರವಿವಿಶುಃ entered.

After the king (Dasaratha) who was a tormenter of enemy forces was seated, the rest of the kings beloved of their subjects entered (the assembly hall).
ಅಥ ರಾಜವಿತೀರ್ಣೇಷು ವಿವಿಧೇಷ್ವಾಸನೇಷು ಚ৷৷2.1.49৷৷

ರಾಜಾನಮೇವಾಭಿಮುಖಾಃ ನಿಷೇದುರ್ನಿಯತಾ ನೃಪಾಃ.


ಅಥ then, ನೃಪಾಃ (those) kings, ರಾಜವಿತೀರ್ಣೇಷು given by king, ವಿವಿಧೇಷು different, ಆಸನೇಷು in the seats, ರಾಜಾನಮೇವ the king alone, ಅಭಿಮುಖಾಃ facing, ನಿಯತಾಃ following the royal tradition, ನಿಷೇದು: were seated.

Then the kings (who entered the assembly) took the seats assigned to them facing the king (Dasaratha), following the royal tradition.
ಸಲಬ್ಧಮಾನೈರ್ವಿನಯಾನ್ವಿತೈರ್ನೃಪೈಃ

ಪುರಾಲಯೈರ್ಜಾನಪದೈಶ್ಚ ಮಾನದೈಃ.

ಉಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟೈರ್ನೃಪತಿರ್ವೃತೋ ಬಭೌ

ಸಹಸ್ರಚಕ್ಷುರ್ಭಗವಾನಿವಾಮರೈಃ৷৷2.1.50৷৷


ಲಬ್ಧಮಾನೈಃ by those who received honour, ವಿನಯಾನ್ವಿತೈಃ by those endowed with modesty, ಉಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟೈಃ by those seated nearby, ನೃಪೈಃ by the kings, ಪುರಾಲಯೈಃ by those residing in towns, ಜಾನಪದೈಃ ಚ also in villages, ಮಾನದೈ: by the respectful, ವೃತಃ surrounded by, ಸಃ ನೃಪತಿಃ that king, ಅಮರೈಃ by devatas, ಭಗವಾನ್ lord, ಸಹಸ್ರಚಕ್ಷುರಿವ like the thousand-eyed (Indra), ಬಭೌ shone.

Surrounded by those feudatory kings endowed with modesty, and received with due honour and by the respectful residents of cities and villages, the king (Dasaratha), resembled lord Indra, the thousand- eyed encircled by the gods.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಪ್ರಥಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.
Thus ends the first sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
