[King Dasaratha enters the palace of Kaikeyi who is in the chamber of wrath--tries to pacify her in different ways.]

ವಿದರ್ಶಿತಾ ಯದಾ ದೇವೀ ಕುಬ್ಜಯಾ ಪಾಪಯಾ ಭೃಶಮ್.

ತದಾ ಶೇತೇ ಸ್ಮ ಸಾ ಭೂಮೌ ದಿಗ್ಧವಿದ್ಧೇವ ಕಿನ್ನರೀ৷৷2.10.1৷৷


ಸಾ ದೇವೀ that queen (Kaikeyi), ಭೃಶಮ್ exceedingly, ಪಾಪಯಾ sinful one, ಕುಬ್ಜಯಾ by hunchback (Manthara), ಯದಾ when, ವಿದರ್ಶಿತಾ perversely advised, ತದಾ then, ದಿಗ್ಧವಿದ್ಧೇವ as if struck by a poisonous arrow, ಕಿನ್ನರೀವ like a 'kinnari', ಭೂಮೌ on the floor, ಶೇತೇ ಸ್ಮ lay down.

Perversely advised by the extremely sinful hunchback the queen (Kaikeyi) lay down on the ground like a kinnari struck as though by a poisonous arrow.
ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಮನಸಾ ಕೃತ್ಯಂ ಸಾ ಸಮ್ಯಗಿತಿ ಭಾಮಿನೀ.

ಮನ್ಥರಾಯೈ ಶನೈಸ್ಸರ್ವಮಾಚಚಕ್ಷೇ ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಾ৷৷2.10.2৷৷


ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಾ intelligent, ಸಾ ಭಾಮಿನೀ that beautiful lady, ಇತಿ thus, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ correctly, ಮನಸಾ in her mind, ಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ the strategy, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ having decided, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ಶನೈ: slowly, ಮನ್ಥರಾಯೈ to Manthara, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ told.

The intelligent, beautiful lady (Kaikeyi), having correctly decided the strategy in her mind, slowly unfolded everything to Manthara.
ಸಾ ದೀನಾ ನಿಶ್ಚಯಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾವಾಕ್ಯಮೋಹಿತಾ.

ನಾಗಕನ್ಯೇವ ನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ದೀರ್ಘಮುಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ಭಾಮಿನೀ৷৷2.10.3৷৷

ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾತ್ಮಸುಖಾವಹಮ್.


ಸಾ ಭಾಮಿನೀ that beautiful lady (Kaikeyi), ಮನ್ಥರಾವಾಕ್ಯಮೋಹಿತಾ impressed by Manthara's words,
ದೀನಾ wretch, ನಿಶ್ಚಯಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ having decided, ನಾಗಕನ್ಯೇವ like a female serpent, ದೀರ್ಘಮ್ deeply, ಉಷ್ಣಂ ಚ also hot, ನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ having sighed, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a while, ಆತ್ಮಸುಖಾವಹಮ್ bringing happiness to herself, ಮಾರ್ಗಮ್ means, ಚಿನ್ತಯಾಮಾಸ thought of.

That beautiful wretch (Kaikeyi) impressed by the words of Manthara heaved deep, hot sighs like a female serpent and thought for a while about the means of bringing happiness to herself.
ಸಾ ಸುಹೃಚ್ಚಾರ್ಥಕಾಮಾ ಚ ತಂ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಸುನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್৷৷2.10.4৷৷

ಬಭೂವ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಾ ಸಿಧ್ದಿಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೇವ ಮನ್ಥರಾ.


ಸುಹೃಚ್ಚ also a friend, ಅರ್ಥಕಾಮಾ ಚ desiring to fulfil the resolve, ಸಾ ಮನ್ಥರಾ that Manthara, ತಮ್ that, ಸುನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್ firm determination, ನಿಶಮ್ಯ having heard, ಸಿದ್ಧಿಮ್ acomplishment of the objective, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯೇವ as if, ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಾ highly pleased, ಬಭೂವ became.

Manthara, Kaikeyi's friend, too, driven by a strong desire to fulfil her resolve was highly pleased and on hearing the firm determination of Kaikeyi, felt as if the accomplishment of the objective was at hand.
ಅಥ ಸಾ ರುಷಿತಾ ದೇವೀ ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ಕೃತ್ವಾ ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್৷৷2.10.5৷৷

ಸಂವಿವೇಶಾಬಲಾ ಭೂಮೌ ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ ಭೃಕುಟೀಂ ಮುಖೇ.


ಅಥ then, ದೇವೀ queen, ಸಾ ಅಬಲಾ that woman,ರುಷಿತಾ soiled, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ completely, ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಯಮ್ firm decision, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having taken, ಮುಖೇ on the face, ಭೃಕುಟೀಮ್ frown, ನಿವೇಶ್ಯ having placed, ಭೂಮೌ on the floor, ಸಂವಿವೇಶ lay down.

Then Kaikeyi finally took a firm decision. With a soiled body and a frowning face she lay down on the floor.
ತತಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಾಣಿ ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನಿ ದಿವ್ಯಾನ್ಯಾಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.10.6৷৷

ಅಪವಿದ್ಧಾನಿ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ತಾನಿ ಭೂಮಿಂ ಪ್ರಪೇದಿರೇ.


ತತ: after that, ತಾನಿ those, ಚಿತ್ರಾಣಿ of different colours, ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನಿ garlands, ದಿವ್ಯಾನಿ divine (costly), ಆಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ also the ornaments, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಅಪವಿದ್ಧಾನಿ thrown off, ಭೂಮಿಮ್ to the ground, ಪ್ರಪೇದಿರೇ resorted.

Thereafter Kaikeyi flung away her multi-coloured garlands along with her costly ornaments on to the ground.
ತಯಾ ತಾನ್ಯಪವಿದ್ಧಾನಿ ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನ್ಯಾಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ৷৷2.10.7৷৷

ಅಶೋಭಯನ್ತ ವಸುಧಾಂ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಾಣಿ ಯಥಾ ನಭಃ.


ತಯಾ by her, ಅಪವಿದ್ಧಾನಿ thrown away, ತಾನಿ ಮಾಲ್ಯಾನಿ all those garlands, ಆಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ and the ornaments also, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಾಣಿ stars, ನಭ: the sky, ಯಥಾ like, ವಸುಧಾಮ್ the ground, ಅಶೋಭಯನ್ತ adorned.

All the garlands and ornaments she scattered adorned the floor like the stars (illumining) the sky.
ಕ್ರೋಧಾಗಾರೇ ನಿಪತಿತಾ ಸಾ ಬಭೌ ಮಲಿನಾಮ್ಬರಾ৷৷2.10.8৷৷

ಏಕವೇಣೀಂ ದೃಢಂ ಬದ್ವಾ ಗತಸತ್ತ್ವೇವ ಕಿನ್ನರೀ.


ಏಕವೇಣೀಮ್ into a single braid, ದೃಢಮ್ tightly, ಬದ್ವಾ having fastened, ಕ್ರೋಧಾಗಾರೇ in the chamber of wrath, ನಿಪತಿತಾ had fallen down, ಮಲಿನಾಮ್ಬರಾ wearing soiled clothes, ಸಾ she, ಗತಸತ್ತ್ವಾ in a lifeless state, ಕಿನ್ನರೀ ಇವ like kinnari, ಬಭೌ shone.

Tightly fastening her hair into a single braid and wearing soiled clothes, she lay down in the chamber of wrath in a lifeless state like a kinnari.
ಆಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ ಚ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್৷৷2.10.9৷৷

ಉಪಸ್ಥಾನಮನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ನಿವೇಶನಮ್.


ಮಹಾರಾಜ: ತು as regards the king, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ installation ceremony, ಆಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ having issued orders, ಉಪಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ very close associates, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ having taken leave,
ನಿವೇಶನಮ್ the palace, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

The king issued orders for Rama's installation ceremony, and taking leave of his close associates entered the palace. .
ಅದ್ಯ ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಕೋ ವೈ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಇತಿ ಜಜ್ಞಿವಾನ್৷৷2.10.10৷৷

ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹಾಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಮಾಖ್ಯಾತುಂ ವಿವೇಶಾನ್ತಃಪುರಂ ವಶೀ.


ವಶೀ one who has subdued the senses, ಅದ್ಯ today, ರಾಮಾಭಿಷೇಕ: Rama's installation, ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ: ಇತಿ is known to everybody, ಜಜ್ಞಿವಾನ್ having come to know, ಪ್ರಿಯಾರ್ಹಾಮ್ to me who deserves to hear such pleasant news (to Kaikeyi), ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasant news, ಆಖ್ಯಾತುಮ್ to communicate, ಅನ್ತ: ಪುರಮ್ the inner apartment, ವಿವೇಶ entered.

Aware of the fact that Rama's installation ceremony was known to everybody by then he who had subdued his senses entered the inner apartment to convey it to one worthy of such pleasant news.
ಸ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಗೃಹಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಂ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ৷৷2.10.11৷৷

ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಾಭ್ರಮಿವಾಕಾಶಂ ರಾಹುಯುಕ್ತಂ ನಿಶಾಕರಃ.


ಮಹಾಯಶಾ: renowned, ಸ: he, ನಿಶಾಕರ: moon, ಪಾಣ್ಡುರಾಭ್ರಮ್ with pale clouds, ರಾಹುಯುಕ್ತಮ್ accompanied by Rahu, ಆಕಾಶಮಿವ like the sky, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ excellent, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ: ಗೃಹಮ್ Kaikeyi's abode, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.

The illustrious king entered the excellent abode of Kaikeyi like the Moon entering the mouth of Rahu in a sky overcast with pale clouds.
ಶುಕಬರ್ಹಿಣಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಂ ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಹಂಸರುತಾಯುತಮ್৷৷2.10.12৷৷

ವಾದಿತ್ರರವಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಂ ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ವಾಮನಿಕಾಯುತಮ್.

ಲತಾಗೃಹೈಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಗೃಹೈಶ್ಚಮ್ಪಕಾಶೋಕಶೋಭಿತೈಃ৷৷2.10.13৷৷

ದಾನ್ತರಾಜತಸೌವರ್ಣವೇದಿಕಾಭಿ ಸ್ಸಮಾಯುತಮ್.

ನಿತ್ಯಪುಷ್ಪಫಲೈರ್ವೃಕ್ಷೈರ್ವಾಪೀಭಿಶ್ಚೋಪಶೋಭಿತಮ್৷৷2.10.14৷৷

ದಾನ್ತರಜತಸೌವರ್ಣೈಸ್ಸಂವೃತಂ ಪರಮಾಸನೈಃ.

ಶುಕಬರ್ಹಿಣಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಮ್ filled with parrots and peacocks, ಕ್ರೌಞ್ಚಹಂಸರುತಾಯುತಮ್ full of cries of kraunchas and swans, ವಾದಿತ್ರರವಸಙ್ಘುಷ್ಟಮ್ echoing with the sounds of musical instruments, ಕುಬ್ಜಾ ವಾಮನಿಕಾಯುತಮ್ with hunchbacks and dwarfs (attendants moving here and there), ಚಮ್ಪಕಾಶೋಕಶೋಭಿತೈ: shining with champaka and ashoka trees, ಲತಾಗೃಹೈ: by bowers surrounded with creepers, ಚಿತ್ರಗೃಹೈ: ಚ with picture-galleries, ದಾನ್ತರಾಜತಸೌವರ್ಣವೇದಿಕಾಭಿ: diases decorated with ivory, gold and silver, ಸಮಾಯುತಮ್ filled with, ನಿತ್ಯಪುಷ್ಪಫಲೈ: bearing flowers and fruits in all seasons, ವೃಕ್ಷೈ: (adorned) with trees, ವಾಪೀಭಿ: ಚ with large pools, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಮ್ adorned, ಪರಮಾಸನೈ: with excellent seats, ವಿವಿಧೈ: various kinds of, ಅನ್ನಪಾನೈ: ಚ with food and drinks, ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯೈ: ಚ eatables also, ಉಪಪನ್ನಮ್ endowed with, ಭೂಷಿತೈ: decorations, ಮಹಾರ್ಹೈ: expensive, ತ್ರಿದಿವೋಪಮಮ್ resembling heaven, ಪುರಮದ್ಧಿಮತ್ prosperous abode, ತತ್ that, ಸ್ವಮ್ his own, ಅನ್ತ: ಪುರಮ್ inner apartment, ಪ್ರವಿಶ್ಯ having entered, ಮಹಾರಾಜ: great king, ರಾಜಾ king (Dasaratha), ಶಯನೋತ್ತಮೇ on the best bed, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ beloved, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ನ ದದರ್ಶ did not see.

The maharaja entered the inner apartment of Kaikeyi's prosperous abode filled with parrots and peacocks, reverberating with cries of kraunchas and swans and sounds of musical instruments attended with hunchbacks and dwarfs decorated with champak and ashoka trees, bowers surrounded with creepers, picture-galleries, altars and sofas embellished with ivory, gold and silver. It was shining with pools and trees bearing flowers and fruits in all seasons. Various kinds of food, drinks and eatables were kept ready. With excellent decorations that abode of Kaikeyi resembled heaven. (But) the king did not see his beloved Kaikeyi in her best bed.

ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ದಯಿತಾಂ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಂ ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ವಿಷಸಾದ ಚ.


ಕಾಮಬಲಸಂಯುಕ್ತ: charged with passion, ಸ: ಮನುಜಾಧಿಪ: the king, ರತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ seeking carnal pleasure, ದಯಿತಾಮ್ beloved, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ wife, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ not seeing, ವಿಷಸಾದ dejected, ಪಪ್ರಚ್ಛ ಚ also enquired.

Charged with passion and seeking carnal pleasure, the king became dejected when he did not see his beloved wife. He enquired about her.
ನ ಹಿ ತಸ್ಯ ಪುರಾ ದೇವೀ ತಾಂ ವೇಲಾಮತ್ಯವರ್ತತ৷৷2.10.18৷৷

ನ ಚ ರಾಜಾ ಗೃಹಂ ಶೂನ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಕದಾಚನ.


ಪುರಾ previously, ದೇವೀ queen (Kaikeyi), ತಸ್ಯ his, ತಾಂ ವೇಲಾಮ್ time, ನ ಅತ್ಯವರ್ತತ ಹಿ did not transgress, ರಾಜಾ king, ಕದಾಚನ never, ಶೂನ್ಯಮ್ empty, ಗೃಹಮ್ apartment, ನ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಚ did not enter.

Never before had queen Kaikeyi missed his time of arrival. Nor had the king ever entered her empty apartment.
ತತೋ ಗೃಹಗತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛತ৷৷2.10.19৷৷

ಯಥಾ ಪೂರ್ವಮವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಲಿಪ್ಸುಮಪಣ್ಡಿತಾಮ್.


ತತ: then, ಗೃಹಗತ: having reached the apartment, ರಾಜಾ king, ಅಪಣ್ಡಿತಾಮ್ foolish lady, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ about Kaikeyi, ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಲಿಪ್ಸುಮ್ seeking selfish interest, ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ without realising, ಯಥಾಪೂರ್ವಮ್ as usual, ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛತ enquired.

Having entered her apartment, the king, unaware of that foolish Kaikeyi's selfish design enquired her whereabouts as usual.
ಪ್ರತೀಹಾರೀ ತ್ವಥೋವಾಚ ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ ಸುಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.10.20৷৷

ದೇವ ದೇವೀ ಭೃಶಂ ಕೃದ್ಧಾ ಕ್ರೋಧಾಗಾರಮಭಿದೃತಾ.


ಅಥ thereafter, ಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಾ frightened, ಪ್ರತೀಹರೀ door-keeper, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿ: with folded palms, ಉವಾಚ said, ದೇವ O monarch! ದೇವೀ queen, ಭೃಶಮ್ ಕೃದ್ವಾ mighty angry, ಕ್ರೋಧಾಗಾರಮ್ towards the chamber of wrath, ಅಭಿದೃತಾ swiftly went.

Thereafter, the frightened door-keeper with folded palms said O monarch! the
queen in a hot mood has rushed into the chamber of wrath.
ಪ್ರತೀಹಾರ್ಯಾ ವಚಶ್ಶೃತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಾ ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ৷৷2.10.21৷৷

ವಿಷಸಾದ ಪುನರ್ಭೂಯೋ ಲುಲಿತವ್ಯಾಕುಲೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷


ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾ: deeply melancholic, ರಾಜಾ king, ಪ್ರತೀಹಾರ್ಯಾ door keeper's, ವಚ: words, ಶೃತ್ವಾ having heard, ಲುಲಿತವ್ಯಾಕುಲೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯ: with his senses agitated and unstable, ಪುನ: again, ಭೂಯ: still more, ವಿಷಸಾದ grieved.

Hearing the words of the door-keeper, the melancholic king grieved all the more with his senses agitated and unstable.
ತತ್ರ ತಾಂ ಪತಿತಾಂ ಭೂಮೌ ಶಯಾನಾಮತಥೋಚಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.10.22৷৷

ಪ್ರತಪ್ತ ಇವ ದುಃಖೇನ ಸೋಪಶ್ಯಜ್ಜಗತೀಪತಿಃ.


ಜಗತೀಪತಿ: lord of the earth, ಸ: he, ತತ್ರ there (in that chamber of wrath), ಪತಿತಾಮ್ fallen down, ಭೂಮೌ on the floor, ಶಯಾನಾಮ್ lying down, ಅತಥೋಚಿತಾಮ್ unbecoming manner, ತಾಮ್ her, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ saw, ದು:ಖೇನ with grief, ಪ್ರತಪ್ತ: ಇವ as if consumed.

The lord of the earth (Dasaratha) saw her (Kaikeyi) lying down on the floor of the chamber of wrath in an unbecoming manner and felt as if consumed by grief.
ಸ ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ತರುಣೀಂ ಭಾರ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಣೇಭ್ಯೋಪಿ ಗರೀಯಸೀಮ್৷৷2.10.23৷৷

ಅಪಾಪಃ ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಾಂ ದದರ್ಶ ಧರಣೀತಲೇ.

ಲತಾಮಿವ ವಿನಿಷ್ಕೃತ್ತಾಂ ಪತಿತಾಂ ದೇವತಾಮಿವ৷৷2.10.24৷৷

ಕಿನ್ನರೀಮಿವ ನಿರ್ಧೂತಾಂ ಚ್ಯುತಾಮಪ್ಸರಸಂ ಯಥಾ.

ಮಾಯಾಮಿವ ಪರಿಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಂ ಹರಿಣೀಮಿವ ಸಂಯತಾಮ್৷৷2.10.25৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧ: aged, ಅಪಾಪ: guileless, ಸ: he, ತರುಣೀಮ್ youthful lady, ಪ್ರಾಣೇಭ್ಯೋಪಿ more than his life, ಗರೀಯಸೀಮ್ dearer, ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪಾಮ್ a lady of sinful intentions, ವಿನಿಷ್ಕೃತ್ತಾಮ್ severed, ಲತಾಮಿವ like a creeper, ಪತಿತಾಮ್ fallen down, ದೇವತಾಮಿವ like a goddess, ನಿರ್ಧೂತಾಮ್ thrown down on earth, ಕಿನ್ನರೀಮಿವ like a 'kinnari', ಚ್ಯುತಾಮ್ slipped (from heaven), ಅಪ್ಸರಸಂ ಯಥಾ like apsarasas, ಪರಿಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಮ್ fallen down, ಮಾಯಾಮಿವ like illusion, ಸಂಯತಾಮ್ tied down, ಹರಿಣೀಮಿವ like a female deer, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ to wife, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

The guileless, old king beheld his youthful wife who was dearer to him than his own life, filled with deceitful intentions. Like a mighty she-elephant caressing her cow wounded with a poisoned arrow in the forest, he caressed her lovingly.
ಪರಿಮೃಶ್ಯ ಚ ಪಾಣಿಭ್ಯಾಮಭಿಸನ್ತ್ರಸ್ತಚೇತನಃ.

ಕಾಮೀ ಕಮಲಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷೀಮುವಾಚ ವನಿತಾಮಿದಮ್৷৷2.10.27৷৷

ನ ತೇಹಮಭಿಜಾನಾಮಿ ಕ್ರೋಧಮಾತ್ಮನಿ ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಮ್.

ದೇವಿ! ಕೇನಾಭಿಶಪ್ತಾಸಿ ಕೇನ ವಾಸಿ ವಿಮಾನಿತಾ৷৷2.10.28৷৷

ಯದಿದಂ ಮಮ ದುಃಖಾಯ ಶೇಷೇ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ! ಪಾಂಸುಷು.


ದೇವಿ O queen! ಆತ್ಮನಿ in me, ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಮ್ taken refuge in (you), ತೇ your, ಕ್ರೋಧಮ್ about anger, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಅಭಿಜಾನಾಮಿ am not able to know, ಕೇನ by whom, ಅಭಿಶಪ್ತಾ ಅಸಿ are you cursed, ಕೇನ ವಾ or by whom, ವಿಮಾನಿತಾ ಅಸಿ are you disrespected, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿ O auspicious one, ಪಾಂಸುಷು in the dust, ಯತ್ ಶೇಷೇ since you lie, ಇದಮ್ this, ಮಮ my, ದು:ಖಾಯ is the source of my sorrow.

O auspicious queen, I do not know whether your anger is directed at me. I do not know the cause of your anger. By whom have you been offended or disrespected? Why are you lying in the dust? This is causing me great sorrow.
ಭೂಮೌ ಶೇಷೇ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ತ್ವಂ ಮಯಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಚೇತಸಿ৷৷2.10.29৷৷

ಭೂತೋಪಹತಚಿತ್ತೇವ ಮಮ ಚಿತ್ತಪ್ರಮಾಥಿನೀ.


ಮಯಿ in me, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಚೇತಸಿ in a mind favourably disposed, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಭೂತೋಪಹತಚಿತ್ತೇವ like one possessed by evil spirits, ಮಮ my, ಚಿತ್ತಪ್ರಮಾಥಿನೀ afflicting my mind, ಕಿಮರ್ಥಮ್ why, ಭೂಮೌ on the floor, ಶೇಷೇ are you lying down?

While I am here favourably disposed towards you, why are you lying down on the floor like one possessed by an evil spirit? Why are you afflicting my mind?
ಸನ್ತಿ ಮೇ ಕುಶಲಾ ವೈದ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ವಭಿತುಷ್ಟಾಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವಶಃ৷৷2.10.30৷৷

ಸುಖಿತಾಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ವ್ಯಾಧಿಮಾಚಕ್ಷ್ವ ಭಾಮಿನೀ.


ಭಾಮಿನಿ O lovely one! ಕುಶಲಾ: experts, ಸರ್ವಶ: in every way, ಅಭಿತುಷ್ಟಾ: ಚ completely satisfied too, ಮೇ my, ವೈದ್ಯಾ: ಸನ್ತಿ physicians are available, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಸುಖಿತಾಮ್ ಕರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will restore your health, ವ್ಯಾಧಿಮ್ ailment, ಆಚಕ್ಷ್ವ you may tell.

O lovely one! there are, to my best satisfaction, expert physicians in all branches (of medical science). They will restore your health. Tell me your ailment.
ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ ತೇ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಕೇನ ವಾ ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.10.31৷৷

ಕಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಲಭತಾಮದ್ಯ ಕೋ ವಾ ಸುಮಹದಪ್ರಿಯಮ್.


ಕಸ್ಯ ವಾ to whom, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ favour, ತೇ by you, ಕಾರ್ಯಮ್ is to be done, ಕೇನ ವಾ by whom, ವಿಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ displeasure, ಕೃತಮ್ was done, ಕ: who, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ favour, ಲಭತಾಮ್ let him obtain, ಕೋ ವಾ who, ಸುಮಹತ್ exceedingly great, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ displeasure (shall obtain).

On whom do you wish to bestow favour? Who has caused you displeasure? To whom should I grant favour now? To whom should I cause great displeasure?
ಮಾ ರೋದೀರ್ಮಾ ಚ ಕಾರ್ಷೀಸ್ತ್ವಂ ದೇವಿ! ಸಂಪರಿಶೋಷಣಮ್৷৷2.10.32৷৷

ಅವಧ್ಯೋ ವಧ್ಯತಾಂ ಕೋ ವಾ ಕೋ ವಾ ವಧ್ಯೋ ವಿಮುಚ್ಯತಾಮ್.

ದರಿದ್ರಃ ಕೋ ಭವತ್ವಾಢ್ಯೋ ದ್ರವ್ಯವಾನ್ವಾಪ್ಯಕಿಞ್ಚನಃ৷৷2.10.33৷৷


ದೇವಿ! O queen! ಮಾ ರೋದೀ: do not weep, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸಂಪರಿಶೋಷಣಮ್ emaciation of body, ಮಾ ಚ ಕಾರ್ಷೀ: do not cause, ಅವಧ್ಯ: who should not be slain, ಕೋ ವಾ or who, ವಧ್ಯತಾಮ್ shall be slain, ವಧ್ಯ: worthy of being slain, ಕೋ ವಾ or who, ವಿಮುಚ್ಯತಾಮ್ shall be released, ದರಿದ್ರ: is poor, ಕೋ ವಾ or who, ಆಢ್ಯ: should be made rich, ಭವತು shall become, ದ್ರವ್ಯವಾನ್ವಾಪಿ whosoever is wealthy, ಅಕಿಞ್ಚನ: shall be rendered poor.

O queen! shed no tears. Drain not your health. Ask me, and I shall slay one who should not be slain or release one who should be slain. I shall make a poor man rich and a wealthy man poor. (Tell me who are such people).
ಅಹಂ ಚೈವ ಮದೀಯಾಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವೇ ತವ ವಶಾನುಗಾಃ.

ನ ತೇ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಂ ವ್ಯಾಹನ್ತುಮಹಮುತ್ಸಹೇ৷৷2.10.34৷৷


ಅಹಂ ಚೈವ I am also, ಮದೀಯಾ: my relatives, ಸರ್ವೇ ಚ all people, ತವ your, ವಶಾನುಗಾ: under control, ತೇ your, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮ್ opinion, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ a little, ವ್ಯಾಹನ್ತುಮ್ to spoil, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನ ಉತ್ಸಹೇ will not make efforts.

My kins and I are under your control. I will make no effort to go even a little against
your wishes.
ಆತ್ಮನೋ ಜೀವಿತೇನಾಪಿ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಯನ್ಮನಸೇಚ್ಛಸಿ.

ಬಲಮಾತ್ಮನಿ ಜಾನನ್ತೀ ನ ಮಾಂ ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.10.35৷৷

ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತವ ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಸುಕೃತೇನಾಪಿ ತೇ ಶಪೇ.


ಅತ್ಮನ: my own, ಜೀವಿತೇನಾಪಿ with life even, ಯತ್ whatever, ಮನಸಾ with mind, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ wish, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell, ಆತ್ಮನಿ in your own self, ಬಲಮ್ strength, ಜಾನನ್ತೀ you know yourself, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮ್ to doubt, ನ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it does not behove you, ಸುಕೃತೇನಾಪಿ on my acquired merits, ತೇ to you, ಶಪೇ I swear, ತವ your, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ pleasure, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will do.

If you want to do anything even if it means sacrificing my life, I shall do it. Since you know my strength, it does not behove you to doubt me. I swear on my merits. I will do whatever pleases you.
ಯಾವದಾವರ್ತತೇ ಚಕ್ರಂ ತಾವತೀ ಮೇ ವಸುನ್ಧರಾ৷৷2.10.36৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಾಸ್ಸಿನ್ಧುಸೌವೀರಾ ಸ್ಸೌರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಪಥಾಃ.

ವಙ್ಗಾಙ್ಗಮಗಧಾಃ ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾಃ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾ ಕಾಶಿಕೋಸಲಾಃ৷৷2.10.37৷৷


ಚಕ್ರಮ್ wheel of the chariot, ಯಾವತ್ till (such places), ಆವರ್ತತೇ rotates, ಮೇ ವಸುನ್ಧರಾ my land, ತಾವತೀ (is extended) up to that, ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಾ: eastern regions, ಸಿನ್ಧುಸೌವೀರಾ: Sindhu-Sauvira areas, ಸೌರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಾ: Saurashtra, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಪಥಾ: southern regions, ವಙ್ಗಾಙ್ಗಮಗಧಾ: Banga, Anga, Magadha states, ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾ: Mathsya kingdom, ಕಾಶಿಕೋಸಲಾ: Kasi and Kosala, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾ: prosperous places.

My authority on the land is extended till such places the wheel of any chariot rotates such as the regions in the east, Sindhu-Sauvira areas, Saurashtra, Southern regions, Banga, Anga, Magadha states, Matsya kingdom and Kasi-Kosala countries which are prosperous places.
ತತ್ರ ಜಾತಂ ಬಹು ದ್ರವ್ಯಂ ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಮಜಾವಿಕಮ್.

ತತೋ ವೃಣೀಷ್ವ! ಕೈಕೇಯಿ ಯದ್ಯತ್ತ್ವಂ ಮನಸೇಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.10.38৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಮ್ wealth and food grains, ಅಜಾವಿಕಮ್ sheep and goats, ಬಹು many, ದ್ರವ್ಯಮ್ things, ಜಾತಮ್ is produced, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ತತ: from those, ಯದ್ಯತ್ whichever, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮನಸಾ in mind, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ wish, ವಣೀಷ್ವ ask.

There wealth and foodgrains, sheep and goats and many things are produced. O Kaikeyi, ask whichever of these you wish.
ಕಿಮಾಯಾಸೇನ ತೇ ಭೀರು! ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠೋತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಶೋಭನೇ.

ತತ್ತ್ವಂ ಮೇ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಯತಸ್ತೇ ಭಯಮಾಗತಮ್৷৷2.10.39৷৷

ತತ್ತೇ ವ್ಯಪನಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ನೀಹಾರಮಿವ ರಶ್ಮಿವಾನ್.


ಭೀರು! O lady, ತೇ to you, ಆಯಾಸೇನ with exertion, ಕಿಮ್ what is the use? ಶೋಭನೇ O charming one, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, arise, ಕೈಕೇಯಿ O Kaikeyi! ತೇ to you, ಯತ: from whom, ಭಯಮ್ fear, ಆಗತಮ್ has come, ತತ್ that, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮೇ me, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell, ತೇ your, ತತ್ the cause for that fear, ರಶ್ಮಿವಾನ್ Sun, ನೀಹಾರಮಿವ like morning mist, ವ್ಯಪನಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will dispel.

O lady! why do you exert yourself? Arise, arise. O charming Kaikeyi, tell me the cause of your fear. I will dispel it just as the Sun dispels morning mists.
ತಥೋಕ್ತಾ ಸಾ ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸ್ತಾ ವಕ್ತುಕಾಮಾ ತದಪ್ರಿಯಮ್৷৷2.10.40৷৷

ಪರಿಪೀಡಯಿತುಂ ಭೂಯೋ ಭರ್ತಾರಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ.


ತಥಾ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ spoken to, ಸಾ she, ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸ್ತಾ breathing a sigh of relief, ತತ್ that, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant thing, ವಕ್ತುಕಾಮಾ intending to tell, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ to her husband, ಭೂಯಃ still more, ಪರಿಪೀಡಯಿತುಮ್ for tormenting, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ started.

Thus spoken to, she (Kaikeyi) breathed a sigh of relief. Intending to tell him the unpleasant thing (which was in her mind), she began tormenting her husband all the more.
