[Meeting of Bharata and Rama --- Rama enquires about his father and others --- about Bharata's rule at Ayodhya.]

ಜಟಿಲಂ ಚೀರವಸನಂ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಪತಿತಂ ಭುವಿ.

ದದರ್ಶ ರಾಮೋ ದುರ್ದರ್ಶಂ ಯುಗಾನ್ತೇ ಭಾಸ್ಕರಂಯಥಾ৷৷2.100.1৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಜಟಿಲಮ್ wearing matted locks, ಚೀರವಸನಮ್ wearing bark robes, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಮ್ with folded palms, ಭುವಿ on the ground, ಪತಿತಮ್ fallen, ಯುಗಾನ್ತೇ at the time of dissolution of the world, ಭಾಸ್ಕರಂ ಯಥಾ like sun, ದುರ್ದರ್ಶಮ್ difficult to look at, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Rama beheld Bharata with matted locks and robes of bark fallen down on the ground with folded hands like the Sun at the time of dissolution of the world. It was really difficult to look at him.
ಕಥಂಚಿದಭಿವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ವಿವರ್ಣವದನಂ ಕೃಶಮ್.

ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಭರತಂ ರಾಮಃ ಪರಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಬಾಹುನಾ৷৷2.100.2৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ವಿವರ್ಣವದನಮ್ of pallid countenance, ಕೃಶಮ್ emaciated, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಕಥಂಚಿತ್ with great difficulty, ಅಭಿವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ having recognised, ಬಾಹೂನಾ with his arm, ಪರಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ caught hold of.

Rama found it extremely difficult to recognise Bharata with his emaciated body and pallid face. He held him in his arms and lifted him.
ಆಘ್ರಾಯ ರಾಮಸ್ತಂ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಚ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಅಙ್ಕೇ ಭರತಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛತ್ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ৷৷2.100.3৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ born in the race of Raghu, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ to that Bharata, ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ on the forehead, ಆಘ್ರಾಯ having kissed, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ಚ and also embracing, ಅಙ್ಕೇ on his lap, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ
making him sit, ಸಮಾಹಿತಃ with composed mind, ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛತ್ enquired.

Born in the race of Raghu, Rama embraced Bharata and kissed him on his forehead. Placing him on his lap, he enquired thus with a composed mind:
ಕ್ವ ನು ತೇಭೂತ್ಪಿತಾ ತಾತ ಯದರಣ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಮಾಗತಃ.

ನ ಹಿ ತ್ವಂ ಜೀವತಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ವನಮಾಗನ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.100.4৷৷


ತಾತ O dear, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಆರಣ್ಯಮ್ to the forest, ಯತ್ ಆಗತಃ now that you have come, ತೇ ಪಿತಾ our father, ಕ್ವ ನು where, ಅಭೂತ್ was he, ತಸ್ಯ he, ಜೀವತಃ while living, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಆಗನ್ತುಮ್ to come, ನ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ ಹಿ does not behove you.

O dear, now that you have come to the forest, where is our father king Dasaratha? You ought not come to the forest while he is living.
ಚಿರಸ್ಯ ಬತ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ದೂರಾದ್ಭರತಮಾಗತಮ್.

ದುಷ್ಪ್ರತೀಕಮರಣ್ಯೇಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಕಿಂ ತಾತ ವನಮಾಗತಃ৷৷2.100.5৷৷


ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಅರಣ್ಯೇ to this forest, ದೂರಾತ್ from a distance, ಆಗತಮ್ have come, ದುಷ್ಪ್ರತೀಕಂ of emaciated limbs, ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಚಿರಸ್ಯ after a long time, ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I see, ಬತ it is a pity, ತಾತ dear brother, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಆಗತಃ did you come?

You have come a long distance (from Ayodhya) to this forest, O Bharata! It is a pity, dear brother, to see you after a long time, so emaciated. What brings you to the forest?
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಧಾರಯತೇ ತಾತ ರಾಜಾ ಯತ್ತ್ವಮಿಹಾಗತಃ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ದೀನ ಸ್ಸಹಸಾ ರಾಜಾ ಲೋಕಾನ್ತರಂ ಗತಃ৷৷2.100.6৷৷


ತಾತ dear child, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಇಹ now, ಯತ್ ಆಗತಃ that you have come here, ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ದಾರಯತೇ Is he surviving, I trust so?, ರಾಜಾ king Dasaratha, ದೀನಃ dejected, ಸಹಸಾ immediately, ಲೋಕಾನ್ತರಮ್ to the other world, ನ ಗತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope he did not depart.

My dear (brother), now that you have come here, I trust, king Dasaratha is keeping good health and hope, he has not departed prematurely in despondency for the other world.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸೌಮ್ಯ ನ ತೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಂ ಬಾಲಸ್ಯ ಶಾಶ್ವತಮ್.

ಕಚ್ಚಿಚ್ಛುಶ್ರೂಷಸೇ ತಾತ ಪಿತರಂ ಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.100.7৷৷


ಸೌಮ್ಯ O gentle one, ಬಾಲಸ್ಯ young ones, ತೇ your, ಶಾಶ್ವತಮ್ permanent, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ನ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust it has not been forfeited, ತಾತ dear child, ಸತ್ಯವಿಕ್ರಮಮ್ a man whose prowess is truthfulness, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are looking after.

O gentle one, being young and inexperienced, I trust, you have not forfeited the kingdom for ever. Dear child, I trust, you are looking after father whose prowess is his truthfulness.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಧಶರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ಕುಶಲೀ ಸತ್ಯಸಂಙ್ಗರಃ.

ರಾಜಸೂಯಾಶ್ವಮೇಧಾನಾಮಾಹರ್ತಾ ಧರ್ಮನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ৷৷2.100.8৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಸಂಙ್ಗರಃ who is true to his promise, ರಾಜಸೂಯಾಶ್ವಮೇಧಾನಾಮ್ Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices, ಆಹರ್ತಾ performer, ಧರ್ಮನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ firm adherent of righteousness, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ಕುಶಲೀ I trust he is in good health.

I trust king Dasaratha, who is true to his promise, a performer of Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices and a firm adherent of righteousness is in good health.
ಸ ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೋ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯೋ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ.

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮುಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯೋ ಯಥಾವತ್ತಾತ ಪೂಜ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.100.9৷৷


ತಾತ dear child, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಃ brahmin (versed in the Vedas), ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ learned, ಧರ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಃ ever fixed in virtues, ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ effulgent, ಸಃ that, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಮ್ Ikshvaku's, ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಃ preceptor, ಯಥಾವತ್ as usual, ಪೂಜ್ಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust he is being honoured.

O dear child! I trust, the family preceptor of the Ikshvakus, Vasistha, the brahmin (versed in the Vedas), who is learned, ever fixed in virtues and effulgent is being honoured as usual.
ಸಾ ತಾತ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಪ್ರಜಾವತೀ.

ಸುಖಿನೀ ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾರ್ಯಾ ಚ ದೇವೀ ನನ್ದತಿ ಕೈಕಯೀ৷৷2.100.10৷৷


ತಾತ dear child, ಸಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ that Kausalya, ಸುಖಿನೀ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ trust she is happy, ಪ್ರಜಾವತೀ mother of excellent progeny, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾ ಚ Sumitra too, ಆರ್ಯಾ noble, ದೇವೀ queen, ಕೈಕಯೀ Kaikeyi, ನನ್ದತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust she is delightful.

Dear child! I trust, Kausalya and Sumitra, mothers of an excellent progeny are happy. I trust, the noble queen Kaikeyi is happy too.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ವಿನಯಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ ಕುಲಪುತ್ರೋ ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಃ.

ಅನಸೂಯುರನುದ್ರಷ್ಟಾ ಸತ್ಕೃತಸ್ತೇ ಪುರೋಹಿತಃ৷৷2.100.11৷৷


ವಿನಯಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ one who is endowed with modesty, ಕುಲಪುತ್ರಃ born of high family, ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಃ conversant in scriptures, ಅನಸೂಯುಃ free from envy, ಅನುದ್ರಷ್ಟಾ one who can give directions, ಪುರೋಹಿತಃ priest, ತೇ to (by) you, ಸತ್ಕೃತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust, you honour.

I trust, you continue to honour the family priest (Suyajna, son of Vasistha) who is endowed with modesty, born of high family, conversant in scriptures, free from envy and who can give you directions with regard to your duties.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದಗ್ನಿಷು ತೇ ಯುಕ್ತೋ ವಿಧಿಜ್ಞೋ ಮತಿಮಾನೃಜುಃ.

ಹುತಂ ಚ ಹೋಷ್ಯಮಾಣಂ ಚ ಕಾಲೇ ವೇದಯತೇ ಸದಾ৷৷2.100.12৷৷


ತೇ your, ಅಗ್ನಿಷು sacred fires, ಯುಕ್ತಃ employed, ವಿಧಿಜ್ಞಃ knower of ritual precepts, ಮತಿಮಾನ್ sagacious, ಋಜುಃ upright, ಸದಾ always, ಹುತಂ ಚ what was offered as oblation, ಹೋಷ್ಯಮಾಣಂ ಚ what is going to be offered as oblation, ಕಾಲೇ at an appropriate time, ವೇದಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust
he informs.

I trust, the sagacious priest who knows ritual precepts, who is upright and is employed to take care of your sacred fires, informs you always regarding what was offered and what is to be offered as oblation at appropriate time.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ದೇವಾನ್ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ ಮಾತೃ್ಗುರೂನ್ಪಿತೃಸಮಾನಪಿ.

ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ ತಾತ! ವೈದ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಣಾಂಶ್ಚಾಭಿಮನ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.100.13৷৷


ತಾತ! dear, ದೇವಾನ್ gods, ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ fathers, ಮಾತolonsymbol mothers, ಗುರೂನ್ teachers, ಪಿತೃಸಮಾನಪಿ relations equal to your father, ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ aged people, ವೈದ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ physicians, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಶ್ಚ brahmins, ಅಭಿಮನ್ಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are paying homage.

Dear brother, I trust you continue to pay homage to gods, father, mothers, teachers, relations equal to your father, aged people, physicians and brahmins.
ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರವರಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿಶಾರದಮ್.

ಸುಧನ್ವಾನಮುಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತ್ವಂ ತಾತ! ಮನ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.100.14৷৷


ತಾತ! dear child, ಇಷ್ವಸ್ತ್ರವರಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಮ್ he who is furnished with excellent arrows and other weapons, ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಶಾರದಮ್ master in state craft, ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಮ್ teacher, ಸುಧನ್ವಾನಮ್ Sudhanva, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮನ್ಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you pay respect.

I hope you treat with respect Sudhanva who is equipped with the most formidable arrows and other weapons propelled by mantras and a master in the science of state-craft.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾತ್ಮಸಮಾ ಶ್ಶೂರಾ ಶ್ಶ್ರುತವನ್ತೋ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಃ.

ಕುಲೀನಾಶ್ಚೇಙ್ಗಿತಜ್ಞಾಶ್ಚ ಕೃತಾಸ್ತೇ ತಾತ! ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ৷৷2.100.15৷৷


ತಾತ O dear, ಆತ್ಮಸಮಾಃ men equal to you, ಶೂರಾಃ brave men, ಶ್ರುತವನ್ತಃ learned men, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಃ men with self-control, ಕುಲೀನಾಶ್ಚ men of noble birth, ಇಙ್ಗಿತಜ್ಞಾಶ್ಚ men skilled in guessing
from hints, ತೇ to you, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ as ministers, ಕೃತಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you have appointed.

I hope, dear brother, you have appointed men who are brave, learned, self-controlled, of noble birth and skilled in guessing from hints.
ಮನ್ತ್ರೋ ವಿಜಯಮೂಲಂ ಹಿ ರಾಜ್ಞಾಂ ಭವತಿ ರಾಘವ.

ಸುಸಂವೃತೋ ಮನ್ತ್ರಧರೈರಮಾತ್ಯೈ ಶ್ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕೋವಿದೈಃ৷৷2.100.16৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕೋವಿದೈಃ by men learned in scriptures, ಮನ್ತ್ರಧರೈಃ by those who can withhold proper counselling, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈಃ by ministers, ಸುಸಂವೃತಃ well-guarded, ಮನ್ತ್ರಃ advice, ರಾಜ್ಞಾಮ್ to the king, ವಿಜಯಮೂಲಮ್ root of victory, ಭವತಿ ಹಿ will become.

O Bharata! the well-guarded advice of ministers, learned in scriptures and capable of proper counselling, is the root of victory for kings, specially when the advice is kept in confidence.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನಿದ್ರಾವಶಂ ನೈಷೀಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕಾಲೇ ಪ್ರಬುದಧ್ಯಸೇ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿಚ್ಚಾಪರರಾತ್ರೇಷು ಚಿನ್ತಿಯಸ್ಯರ್ಥನೈಪುಣಮ್৷৷2.100.17৷৷


ನಿದ್ರಾವಶಮ್ controlled by sleep, ನೈಷೀಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are you not, I trust, ಕಾಲೇ at appropriate time, ಪ್ರಬುಧ್ಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are awake, I hope, ಅಪರರಾತ್ರೇಷು in the early hours, ಅರ್ಥನೈಪುಣಮ್ about judicious statecraft, ಚಿನ್ತಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are you thinking, I trust.

I trust you are not under the grip of sleep but wake up at appropriate times, I hope you always think of the means of judicious statecraft during the last part of the night.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಸೇ ನೈಕಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಬಹುಭಿಸ್ಸಹ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿತೋ ಮನ್ತ್ರೋ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಂ ನ ಪರಿಧಾವತಿ৷৷2.100.18৷৷


ಏಕಃ alone, ನ ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ you are not planning, I hope, ಬಹುಭಿಸ್ಸಹ with many, ನ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ hope you are not discussing, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಃ when decided, ತೇ ಮನ್ತ್ರಃ that decision, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ about the kingdom, ನ ಪರಿಧಾವತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ does not run through, I trust.

I hope you neither decide alone nor discuss with many. I trust a decision once made by you is not leaked in the kingdom.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದರ್ಥಂ ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಲಘುಮೂಲಂ ಮಹೋದಯಮ್.

ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾರಭಸೇ ಕರ್ತುಂ ನ ದೀರ್ಘಯಸಿ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.100.19৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ಲಘುಮೂಲಮ್ with a little effort, ಮಹೋದಯಮ್ yielding great result, ಅರ್ಥಮ್ an endeavour, ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ having determined, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to execute, ಆರಭಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are commencing, ನ ದೀರ್ಘಯಸಿ are not postponing unduly.

O Bharata, having determined on an endeavour involving a little effort and yielding great results, I trust you commence to execute it quickly without procrastination?
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತು ಸುಕೃತಾನ್ಯೇವ ಕೃತರೂಪಾಣಿ ವಾ ಪುನಃ.

ವಿದುಸ್ತೇ ಸರ್ವಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ ನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾಃ৷৷2.100.20৷৷


ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾಃ other kings, ಸುಕೃತಾನ್ಯೇವ well-accomplished acts only, ಪುನಃ again, ಕೃತರೂಪಾಣಿ ವಾ or almost accomplished, ತೇ your, ಸರ್ವಕಾರ್ಯಾಣಿ all those endeavours, ವಿದುಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are informed, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಾನಿ endeavours intended to be performed in future, ನ are not revealed.

I trust, other kings come to know of your endeavours only when your endeavours suceed or about to succeed. I hope, efforts intended to be made in future are not revealed to them beforehand.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನತರ್ಕೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ವಾ ಯೇ ಚಾಪ್ಯಪರಿಕೀರ್ತಿತಾಃ.

ತ್ವಯಾ ವಾ ತವಾಮಾತ್ಯೈರ್ಬುಧ್ಯತೇ ತಾತ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಮ್৷৷2.100.21৷৷


ತಾತಃ dear, ತ್ವಯಾ ವಾ by you, ತವ your, ಅಮಾತ್ಯೈರ್ವಾ or by ministers, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿತಮ್ determination, ತರ್ಕೈಃ by conjecture, ಯುಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ವಾ or by inference, ಯೇ ಚಾಪಿ other means, ಅಪರಿಕೀರ್ತಿತಾಃ so far not been revealed, (with those means or by others), ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಬುಧ್ಯತೇ I hope are not known.

Dear brother, I hope others are not able to understand your determination or those of your ministers, either by conjecture or by inference or through other means without being revealed either by you or by your ministers.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸಹಸ್ರಾನ್ಮೂರ್ಖಾಣಾಮೇಕಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮ್.

ಪಣ್ಡಿತೋ ಹ್ಯರ್ಥಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರೇಷು ಕುರ್ಯಾನ್ನಿಶ್ರೇಯಸಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷2.100.22৷৷


ಮೂರ್ಖಾಣಾಮ್ among fools, ಸಹಸ್ರಾತ್ in preferance to a thousand, ಏಕಮ್ single, ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮ್ wise man, ಇಚ್ಚಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope are preferring, ಅರ್ಥಕೃಚ್ಛೇಷು in difficult situations, ಪಣ್ಡಿತಃ a wise man, ಮಹತ್ immense, ನಿಶ್ರೇಯಸಮ್ help, ಕುರ್ಯಾತ್ will render.

I hope by setting aside a thousand fools, you prefer a single wise man. A wise man will be of immense help in difficult situations.
ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣ್ಯಪಿ ಮೂರ್ಖಾಣಾಂ ಯುದ್ಯುಪಾಸ್ತೇ ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ.

ಅಥವಾಪ್ಯಯುತಾನ್ಯೇವ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ತೇಷು ಸಹಾಯತಾ৷৷2.100.23৷৷


ಮಹೀಪತಿಃ king, ಮೂರ್ಖಾಣಾಮ್ fools, ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ in thousands, ಅಥವಾ or else, ಅಯುತಾನ್ಯೇವ or tens of thousands, ಉಪಾಸ್ತೇ ಯದ್ಯಪಿ even if he seeks assistance, ತೇಷು among them, ಸಹಾಯತಾ help, ನಾಸ್ತಿ not there.

Even if the king seeks the assistance from thousands or tens of thousands of fools, they cannot render any help to him.

ಮೇಧಾವೀ prudent, ಶೂರಃ brave, ದಕ್ಷಃ skilful, ವಿಚಕ್ಷಣಃ clear-sighted man, ಏಕಃ a single one, ಅಮಾತ್ಯಃ ಅಪಿ even minister, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ the king, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಂ ವಾ or a prince, ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ prosperity, ಪ್ರಾಪಯೇತ್ can bring.

A single clear-sighted minister who is prudent, brave and skilful can bring about great
prosperity to a king or a prince.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ಮುಖ್ಯಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಸ್ವೇವ ಮಧ್ಯಮೇಷು ಚ ಮಧ್ಯಮಾಃ.

ಜಘನ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ಜಘನ್ಯೇಷು ಭೃತ್ಯಾಃ ಕರ್ಮಸು ಯೋಜಿತಾಃ৷৷2.100.25৷৷


ಮುಖ್ಯಾಃ important, ಭೃತ್ಯಾಃ servants, ಮಹತ್ಸು in important, ಕರ್ಮಸು ಏವ in tasks, ಯೋಜಿತಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ have been employed, I hope, ಮಧ್ಯಮಾಃ mediocre men, ಮಧ್ಯಮೇಷು to the mediocre tasks, ಜಘನ್ಯಾಃ ತು low people, ಜಘನ್ಯೇಷು in the lower tasks, ಯೋಜಿತಾ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are employed, I hope.

I hope you have employed highly competent servants for important tasks, mediocre servants in mediocre tasks and low people in inferior tasks.
ಅಮಾತ್ಯಾನುಪಧಾತೀತಾನ್ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹಾಞ್ಛುಚೀನ್.

ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾಂಛ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇಷುಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ವಂ ನಿಯೋಜಯಸಿ ಕರ್ಮಸು৷৷2.100.26৷৷


ಉಪಧಾತೀತಾನ್ unyielding to bribery and other temptations, ಪಿತೃಪೈತಾಮಹಾನ್ men who hold hereditary positions, ಶುಚೀನ್ full of integrity, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾನ್ eminent, ಅಮಾತ್ಯಾನ್ ministers, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠೇಷು for superior, ಕರ್ಮಸು for tasks, ನಿಯೋಜಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you are assigning.

I hope you are assigning ministers, who are unyielding to bribery and other temptations, holding positions hereditarily and who are full of integrity and eminence, with superior tasks.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನೋಗ್ರೇಣ ದಣ್ಡೇನ ಭೃಶಮುದ್ವೇಜಿತಪ್ರಜಮ್.

ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಂ ತವಾನುಜಾನನ್ತಿ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತ৷৷2.100.27৷৷


ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತ O Bharata, ಉಗ್ರೇಣ by severe, ದಣ್ಡೇನ with punishment, ಭೃಶಮ್ excessively, ತವ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ your kingdom, ಉದ್ವೇಜಿತಪ್ರಜಮ್ citizens being agitated, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ ministers, ನಾನುಜಾನನ್ತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I suppose will not permit so.

Are not the citizens of your kingdom agitated at severe punishment meted out to them reproaching your ministers?
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತ್ವಾಂ ನಾವಜಾನನ್ತಿ ಯಾಜಕಾಃ ಪತಿತಂ ಯಥಾ.

ಉಗ್ರಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಹೀತಾರಂ ಕಾಮಯಾನಮಿವ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.100.28৷৷


ಯಾಜಕಾಃ performers of sacrifice, ಉಗ್ರಪ್ರತಿಗ್ರಹೀತಾರಮ್ accepting unmerited charity, ಪತಿತಂ ಯಥಾ like an outcaste, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಕಾಮಯಾನಮ್ ಇವ to a lustful one, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ನಾವಜಾನನ್ತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ hope they are not insulting you.

Just like a performer of sacrifice scorns at an outcaste or a woman scorns at a lustful lover, do the subjects not scorn you for collecting taxes more than what is due?
ಉಪಾಯಕುಶಲಂ ವೈದ್ಯಂ ಭೃತ್ಯಸಂದೂಷಣೇ ರತಮ್.

ಶೂರಮೈಶ್ವರ್ಯಕಾಮಂ ಚ ಯೋ ನ ಹನ್ತಿ ಸ ಹನ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.100.29৷৷


ಉಪಾಯಕುಶಲಮ್ skilled in contrivances, ವೈದ್ಯಮ್ learned person, ಶೂರಮ್ warrior, ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಕಾಮಂ ಚ passionate for wealth, ಭೃತ್ಯಸಂದೂಷಣೇ in corrupting the minds of servants and making them revolt against their master, ರತಮ್ one who is engaged, ಯಃ such man, ನ ಹನ್ತಿ will not kill, ಸಃ that man, ಹನ್ಯತೇ will be killed.

A learned person but skilled in contrivances, a warrior with passion for wealth and a man ever engaged in corrupting the minds of servants must be slain. A king who does not kill them is himself killed in due course.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಧೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ ಶೂರಶ್ಚ ಮತಿಮಾನ್ ಧೃತಿಮಾನ್ ಶುಚಿಃ.

ಕುಲೀನಶ್ಚಾನುರಕ್ತಶ್ಚ ದಕ್ಷಸ್ಸೇನಾಪತಿಃ ಕೃತಃ৷৷2.100.30৷৷


ಹೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ cheerful, ಶೂರಶ್ಚ brave, ಮತಿಮಾನ್ sagacious, ಧೃತಿಮಾನ್ steadfast, ಶುಚಿಃ honest, ಕುಲೀನಶ್ಚ born of good family, ಅನುರಕ್ತಶ್ಚ also loyal, ದಕ್ಷಃ efficient, ಸೇನಾಪತಿಃ chief of army, ಕೃತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope has been appointed.

I trust you have appointed a man who is cheerful, brave, sagacious, steadfast, honest, of a good family, loyal and efficient as the army chief.
ಬಲವನ್ತಶ್ಚ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಮುಖ್ಯಾ ಯುಧ್ದವಿಶಾರದಾಃ.

ದೃಷ್ಟಾಪದಾನಾ ವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಸ್ತ್ವಯಾ ಸತ್ಕೃತ್ಯಮಾನಿತಾಃ৷৷2.100.31৷৷


ಬಲವನ್ತಃ powerful, ಯುಧ್ದವಿಶಾರದಾಃ skilled in war, ದೃಷ್ಟಾಪದಾನಾಃ men with proven herioc exploits, ವಿಕ್ರಾನ್ತಾಃ courageous men, ತೇ ಮುಖ್ಯಾಃ those prominent soldiers, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಸತ್ಕೃತ್ಯ having honoured, ಮಾನಿತಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope they are respected.

I trust you honour and respect those prominent soldiers who are courageous, powerful, skilled in war and who have proven heroic exploits.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಬಲಸ್ಯ ಭಕ್ತಂ ಚ ವೇತನಂ ಚ ಯಥೋಚಿತಮ್.

ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಂ ದಾತವ್ಯಂ ದದಾಸಿ ನ ವಿಲಮ್ಬಸೇ৷৷2.100.32৷৷


ಬಲಸ್ಯ of the army, ದಾತವ್ಯಮ್ to be given, ಭಕ್ತಂ ಚ food (rations), ಯಥೋಚಿತಮ್ suitable, ವೇತನಂ ಚ wages, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಕಾಲಮ್ in due time, ದದಾಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are paying, ನ ವಿಲಮ್ಬಸೇ not delaying.

I trust you distribute rations and wages to your army in due time without making delay.
ಕಾಲಾತಿಕ್ರಮಣಾಚ್ಚೈವ ಭಕ್ತವೇತನಯೋರ್ಭೃತಾಃ.

ಭರ್ತುಃ ಕುಪ್ಯನ್ತಿ ದುಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಸೋನರ್ಥ ಸ್ಸುಮಹಾನ್ ಸ್ಮೃತಃ৷৷2.100.33৷৷


ಭೃತಾಃ (dependent) attendants, ಭಕ್ತವೇತನಯೋಃ regarding food materials and wages, ಕಾಲಾತಿಕ್ರಮಣಾತ್ beyond stipulated time, ಭರ್ತುಃ about the masters, ಕುಪ್ಯನ್ತಿ will be incensed, ದುಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will become corrupted, ಸಃ that one, ಸುಮಹಾನ್ very great, ಅನರ್ಥಃ calamity, ಸ್ಮೃತಃ has been stated in the scriptures.

It has been mentioned in the scriptures that if provisions and wages are not paid in stipulated time, the dependent attendants will be incensed with their masters and will turn hostile and become corrupt, leading to great calamity.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸರ್ವೇನುರಕ್ತಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಕುಲಪುತ್ರಾಃ ಪ್ರಧಾನತಃ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಪ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಸ್ತವಾರ್ಥೇಷು ಸನ್ತ್ಯಜನ್ತಿ ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ৷৷2.100.34৷৷


ಸರ್ವೇ all men, ಪ್ರಧಾನತಃ especially, ಕುಲಪುತ್ರಾಃ men of our family, ತ್ವಾಮ್ to you, ಅನುರಕ್ತಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope they are loyal, ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ men with steady mind, ತವ ಅರ್ಥೇಷು for your cause, ಪ್ರಾಣಾನ್ life, ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ ಸನ್ತ್ಯಜನ್ತಿ I hope are ready to sacrifice.

I hope all men of a good family, especially those who belong to our race, are loyal to you and are ready to sacrifice their lives for your cause.
ಕಚ್ಚಿಜ್ಜಾನಪದೋ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್.

ಯಥೋಕ್ತವಾದೀ ದೂತಸ್ತೇ ಕೃತೋ ಭರತ! ಪಣ್ಡಿತಃ৷৷2.100.35৷৷


ಭರತ! O Bharata, ಜಾನಪದಃ one who is born in your country, ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ well-informed, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ favourable, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾನವಾನ್ one with quick understanding, ಯಥೋಕ್ತವಾದೀ one who repeats, ಪಣ್ಡಿತಃ expert man, ತೇ to (by) you, ದೂತ: as envoy, ಕೃತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope has been chosen.

O Bharata, I hope you have chosen as your envoy an expert born in your own country, well-informed, skilful and quick to understand one who repeats and reports (exactly) what has been told.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದಷ್ಟಾದಶಾನ್ಯೇಷು ಸ್ವಪಕ್ಷೇ ದಶ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ.

ತ್ರಿಭಿಸ್ತ್ರಿಭಿರವಿಜ್ಞಾತೈರ್ವೇತ್ಸಿ ತೀರ್ಥಾನಿ ಚಾರಕೈಃ৷৷2.100.36৷৷


ಅನ್ಯೇಷು on enemy's side, ಅಷ್ಟಾದಶ eighteen, ತೀರ್ಥಾನಿ officials by close watch, ಸ್ವಪಕ್ಷೇ on your side, ದಶ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ ten plus five (fifteen), ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾತೈಃ by those unrecognisable by others, ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ three for each official, ಚಾರಕೈಃ spies, ವೇತ್ಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you acquire information.

I hope you collect information (of their secret efforts) intelligently through unrecognisable spies with three of them closely watching each of the eighteen officials (there are eighteen categories of officials in a kingdom) of the enemy's side and fifteen
(officials) on your side.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ವ್ಯಪಾಸ್ತಾನಹಿತಾನ್ಪ್ರತಿಯಾತಾಂಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವದಾ.

ದುರ್ಬಲಾನನವಜ್ಞಾಯ ವರ್ತಸೇ ರಿಪುಸೂದನ৷৷2.100.37৷৷


ರಿಪುಸೂದನ O slayer of foes, ವ್ಯಪಾಸ್ತಾನ್ defeated, ಪ್ರತಿಯಾತಾಂಶ್ಚ having gone back, ದುರ್ಬಲಾನ್ weak, ಅಹಿತಾನ್ foes, ಸರ್ವದಾ at all times, ಅನವಜ್ಞಾಯ without neglecting, ವರ್ತಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you remain alert.

O slayer of foes, I hope you are always alert about your foes who were defeated by you and have come back. You should not ignore your enemies thinking they are weak.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಲೌಕಾಯತಿಕಾನ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಸ್ತಾತ ಸೇವಸೇ৷৷

ಅನರ್ಥಕುಶಲಾ ಹ್ಯೇತೇ ಬಾಲಾಃ ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮಾನಿನಃ৷৷2.100.38৷৷


ತಾತ O dear child, ಲೌಕಾಯತಿಕಾನ್ thinking of this world only, those atheists, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾನ್ brahmins, ನ ಸೇವಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you are not keeping company, ಪಣ್ಡಿತಮಾನಿನಃ fancying them as learned, ಬಾಲಾಃ foolish, ಏತೇ these people, ಅನರ್ಥಕುಶಲಾಃ ಹಿ adept in bringing disaster indeed.

Dear brother, I hope you do not serve those brahmins who are atheists, who foolishly think of this world alone and fancy themselves as learned. They only bring disasters.
ಧರ್ಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೇಷು ಮುಖ್ಯೇಷು ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನೇಷು ದುರ್ಬುಧಾಃ.

ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ವೀಕ್ಷಿಕೀಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ನಿರರ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರವದನ್ತಿ ತೇ৷৷2.100.39৷৷


ದುರ್ಬುಧಾಃ these superficial fellows, ಮುಖ್ಯೇಷು among the principal, ಧರ್ಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೇಷು in scriptures, ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನೇಷು while existing, ಆನ್ವೀಕ್ಷಿಕೀಮ್ relating to the science of logic, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮ್ intelligence, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having obtained, ನಿರರ್ಥಮ್ futile, ಪ್ರವದನ್ತಿ argue.

While principal scriptures do exist, these superficial fellows take resort to the science of logic based on abstract reasoning, and indulge in futile talks.
ವೀರೈರಧ್ಯುಷಿತಾಂ ಪೂರ್ವಮಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ತಾತ! ಪೂರ್ವಕೈಃ.

ಸತ್ಯನಾಮಾಂ ದೃಢ ದ್ವಾರಾಂ ಹಸ್ತ್ಯಶ್ವರಥಸಙ್ಕುಲಾಮ್৷৷2.100.40৷৷

ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈಃ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೈರ್ವೈಶ್ಯೈ ಸ್ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮನಿರತೈಸ್ಸದಾ.

ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈರ್ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹೈರ್ವೃತಾಮಾರ್ಯೈ ಸ್ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ৷৷2.100.41৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಸಾದೈರ್ವಿವಿಧಾಕಾರೈರ್ವೃತಾಂ ವೈದ್ಯಜನಾಕುಲಾಮ್.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸುಮುದಿತಾಂ ಸ್ಫೀತಾಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಪರಿರಕ್ಷಸಿ৷৷2.100.42৷৷


ತಾತಾ! O dear child, ವೀರೈಃ by the heroic, ಅಸ್ಮಾಕಮ್ our, ಪೂರ್ವಕೈಃ by ancestors, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ formerly, ಅಧ್ಯುಷಿತಾಮ್ inhabited, ಸತ್ಯನಾಮಾಮ್ true to its name, ದೃಢದ್ವಾರಾಮ್ with sturdy gates,
ಹಸ್ತ್ಯಶ್ವರಥಸಙ್ಕುಲಾಮ್ full of elephants, horses and chariots, ಸದಾ always, ಸ್ವಕರ್ಮನಿರತೈಃ engaged in their respective professions, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯೈಃ by self-controlled men, ಮಹೋತ್ಸಾಹೈಃ by highly energetic men, ಆರ್ಯೈಃ by venerable men, ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ in their thousands, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೈಃ by brahmins, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯೈಃ by kshatriyas (warriors), ವೈಶ್ಯೈಃ by vaisyas (merchants), ವೃತಮ್ surrounded, ವಿವಿಧಾಕಾರೈಃ of various kinds, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದೈಃ with palaces, ವೃತಾಮ್ filled with, ವೈದ್ಯಜನಾಕುಲಾಮ್ full of learned people, ಸುಮುದಿತಾಮ್ with everything available, ಸ್ಫೀತಾಮ್ prosperous, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಪರಿರಕ್ಷಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are protecting.

My dear brother! I trust you are protecting the (impregnable) city of Ayodhya worthy of its name, formerly defended by our heroic ancestors, with its sturdy gates, its elephants, horses and chariots, its thousands of venerable, self-controlled and highly energetic brahmins, kshatriyas and vaisyas engaged in their respective professions, filled with palaces of various kinds, abounding in learned people and a prosperous city where everything is available in abundance.
ಕಚ್ಚಿಚ್ಚೈತ್ಯಶತೈರ್ಜುಷ್ಟ ಸ್ಸುನಿವಿಷ್ಟಜನಾಕುಲಃ.

ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನೈಃ ಪ್ರಪಾಭಿಶ್ಚ ತಟಾಕೈಶ್ಚೋಪಶೋಭಿತಃ৷৷2.100.43৷৷

ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟನರನಾರೀಕಸ್ಸಮಾಜೋತ್ಸವಶೋಭಿತಃ.

ಸುಕೃಷ್ಟಸೀಮಾ ಪಶುಮಾನ್ಹಿಂಸಾಭಿಃ ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ৷৷2.100.44৷৷

ಅದೇವಮಾತೃಕೋ ರಮ್ಯ ಶ್ಶ್ವಾಪದೈಃ ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ.

ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತೋ ಭಯೈಸ್ಸರ್ವೈಃ ಖನಿಭಿಶ್ಚೋಪಶೋಭಿತಃ৷৷2.100.45৷৷

ವಿವರ್ಜಿತೋ ನರೈಃ ಪಾಪೈರ್ಮಮ ಪೂರ್ವೈ ಸ್ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಃ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿಜ್ಜನಪದಸ್ಸ್ಫೀತಃ ಸುಖಂ ವಸತಿ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.100.46৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ಚೈತ್ಯಶತೈಃ by hundreds of sanctuaries near villages, ಜುಷ್ಟ: furnished, ಸುನಿವಿಷ್ಟಜನಾಕುಲಃ filled with people where life is made comfortable, ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನೈಃ with shrines, ಪ್ರಪಾಭಿಶ್ಚ with centres for providing water, ತಟಾಕೈಶ್ಚ with tanks, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಃ graced with, ಸುಕೃಷ್ಟಸೀಮಾ well-ploughed land, ಪಶುಮಾನ್ with excellent cattle, ಹಿಂಸಾಭಿಃ with violence, ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ abandoned, ಅದೇವಮಾತೃಕಃ not dependant on rain, ರಮ್ಯಃ enchanting, ಶ್ವಾಪದೈಃ with wild animals, ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ devoid of, ಸರ್ವೈಃ by all kinds, ಭಯೈಃ of fears, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಃ expelled,
ಖನಿಭಿಶ್ಚ with mines, ಉಪಶೋಭಿತಃ adorned with, ಪಾಪೈಃ by sinful, ನರೈಃ with people, ವಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ deserted, ಮಮ my, ಪೂರ್ವೈಃ by ancestors, ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಃ well-protected, ಜನಪದ: country, ಸ್ಫೀತಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust is prosperous, ಸುಖಮ್ comfortably, ವಸತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope they are living.

O Bharata, my country which is marked with hundreds of sanctuaries near villages where life of the people is made comfortable, where there are shrines, water distribution facilities and tanks, which is well-ploughed and rich in cattle-wealth, free from violence and independent of rain. It is enchanting. It is safe from wild animals. With fears expelled, free from sinful people, adorned with mines and well-protected by my ancestors, it is prosperous and I hope people are living comfortably.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ದಯಿತಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಕೃಷಿಗೋರಕ್ಷಜೀವಿನಃ.

ವಾರ್ತಾಯಾಂ ಸಂಶ್ರಿತಸ್ತಾತ! ಲೋಕೋ ಹಿ ಸುಖಮೇಧತೇ৷৷2.100.47৷৷

The world's prosperity, dear brother, grows on the profession of cattle rearing.

ಗುಪ್ತಿಪರೀಹಾರೈಃ by affording protection and through prevention of adversities, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಭರಣಮ್ maintenance, ತೇ to you (by you), ಕೃತಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ has been done, I hope, ರಾಜ್ಞಾ by the king, ವಿಷಯವಾಸಿನಃ those living in the country, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ with righteousness, ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಃ ಹಿ are required to be protected.

I trust you nourish them and also afford portection and prevent adversities. A king must protect all those people living in his country in accordanc with righteousness.
ಕಚ್ಚಿಸ್ತ್ರಿಯ ಸ್ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತಾಶ್ಚ ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope you are pacifying, ತಾಃ they, ತೇ to (by) you, ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust they are guarded well, ಆಸಾಮ್ words of the women, ನ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಸ್ಯಾಸಾಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you believe not, ಗುಹ್ಯಮ್ secret, ನ ಭಾಷಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you do not divulge.

I trust, you keep the women pacified and well-protected, you do not believe their words and do not divulge any secrets to them.

ನಾಗವನಮ್ habitat of elephants, ಗುಪ್ತಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust is protected, ತೇ to you, ಧೇನುಕಾಃ milch cows, ಸನ್ತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you have, ಗಣಿಕಾಶ್ವಾನಾಮ್ mares, ಕುಞ್ಜರಾಣಾಂಚ elephants, ನ ತೃಪ್ಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are not contented.

I trust, you protect the habitat of elephants and you have a large number of milch cows. I trust you are not contented with the existing number of female and male
elephants and horses.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ದರ್ಶಯಸೇ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಮನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಂ ವಿಭೂಷಿತಮ್.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರ O prince! ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ daily, ಪೂರ್ವಾಹ್ಣೇ early in the morning, ಉತ್ಥಾಯೋತ್ಥಾಯ rising early, ಮಹಾಪಥೇ on the thoroughfare, ಮಾನುಷ್ಯಾಣಾಮ್ to the people, ವಿಭೂಷಿತಮ್ well-adorned, ದರ್ಶಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are presenting yourself.

O prince, I trust, you rise early daily and present yourself well-adomed to the people on the thoroughfare.
ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಸರ್ವೇ ಕರ್ಮಾನ್ತಾಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷಾಸ್ತೇವಿಶಙ್ಕಯಾ.

ಸರ್ವೇ ವಾ ಪುನರುತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಾ ಮಧ್ಯಮೇವಾತ್ರ ಕಾರಣಮ್৷৷2.100.52৷৷


ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಕರ್ಮಾನ್ತಾಃ servants, ತೇ to you, ಅವಿಶಙ್ಕಯಾ without fear, ನ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust do not present themselves, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ಉತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಾಃ ವಾ ಪುನಃ or again (I trust) are not kept in a distance, ಅತ್ರ here, ಮಧ್ಯಮೇವ middle course, ಕಾರಣಮ್ reason for welfare of all the workers.

All the servants, I trust, do not present themselves to you directly. At the same time they do not remain out of sight with fear at a distance. The middle course is the best way for the welfare of every one.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ ದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಾಯುಧೋದಕೈಃ.

ಯನ್ತ್ರೈಶ್ಚ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಾನಿ ತಥಾ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿಧನುರ್ಧರೈಃ৷৷2.100.53৷৷


ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ all, ದುರ್ಗಾಣಿ the forts, ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಾಯುಧೋದಕೈಃ with wealth, grains, weapons and water, ಯನ್ತ್ರೈಶ್ಚ with ammunitions or machines of war, ತಥಾ similarly, ಶಿಲ್ಪಿಧನುರ್ಧರೈಃ with craftsmen and archers, ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣಾನಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are adequately provided, I trust.

Hope all the forts are adequately provided with wealth, foodgrains, weapons and water, with machines of war and craftsmen and archers.
ಆಯಸ್ತೇ ವಿಪುಲಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕಚ್ಚಿದಲ್ಪತರೋ ವ್ಯಯಃ.

ಅಪಾತ್ರೇಷು ನ ತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕೋಶೋ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.100.54৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ತೇ your, ಆಯಃ revenues, ವಿಪುಲಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ are abundant, I trust, ವ್ಯಯಃ expenditure, ಅಲ್ಪತರಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ is much less, I hope, ತೇ your, ಕೋಶಃ treasury, ಅಪಾತ್ರೇಷು to undeserving people, ನ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ does not pass, I trust.

O Bharata, I trust, your revenues are abundant and expenditure much less. I trust you do not give away your treasure to undeserving persons.
ದೇವತಾರ್ಥೇ ಚ ಪಿತ್ರರ್ಥೇಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಭ್ಯಾಗತೇಷು ಚ.

ಯೋಧೇಷು ಮಿತ್ರವರ್ಗೇಷು ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ತೇ ವ್ಯಯಃ৷৷2.100.55৷৷


ತೇ your, ವ್ಯಯಃ expenditure, ದೇವತಾರ್ಥೇ ಚ for the sake of the gods, ಪಿತ್ರರ್ಥೇ for the sake of ancestors, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಭ್ಯಾಗತೇಷು for brahmins and guests, ಯೋಧೇಷು on warriors, ಮಿತ್ರವರ್ಗೇಷು on hordes of friends, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ is being spent I hope.

I trust, you are spending only on gods, ancestors, brahmins, guests, warriors and hosts of friends.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾರ್ಯೋ ವಿಶುದ್ಧಾತ್ಮಾ ಕ್ಷಾರಿತ ಶ್ಚಾಪರಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ಅಪೃಷ್ಟ ಶ್ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕುಶಲೈರ್ನ ಲೋಭಾದ್ವಧ್ಯತೇ ಶುಚಿಃ৷৷2.100.56৷৷


ವಿಶುದ್ಧಾತ್ಮಾ of pure-hearted man, ಆರ್ಯಃ venerable one, ಶುಚಿಃ honest, ಅಪಕರ್ಮಣಾ with unworthy act, ಕ್ಷಾರಿತಃ falsely accused of adultery, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕುಶಲೈಃ by those well-versed in scriptures, ಅಪೃಷ್ಟಃ without consulting, ಲೋಭಾತ್ out of avarice, ನ ವಧ್ಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust is not slain.

I trust a man who is honest, pure-hearted and venerable, falsely accused of adultery is not slain out of avarice without consulting experts in scriptures.
ಗೃಹೀತಶ್ಚೈವ ಪೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ ಕಾಲೇ ದೃಷ್ಟಸ್ಸಕಾರಣಃ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿನ್ನ ಮುಚ್ಯತೇ ಚೋರೋ ಧನಲೋಭಾನ್ನರರ್ಷಭ৷৷2.100.57৷৷


ನರರ್ಷಭ O best among men, ಕಾಲೇ at the time of committing theft, ದೃಷ್ಟಃ who has been caught red-handed, ಗೃಹೀತಶ್ಚೈವ one who is arrested, ಪೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ one who has been interrogated, ಸಕಾರಣಃ one who has sufficient evidence, ಚೋರಃ thief, ಧನಲೋಭಾತ್ out of greed for money, ನ ಮುಚ್ಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I hope is not set free.

O best among men! I trust that a thief, caught red-handed and interrogated and has sufficient proof is not set free, out of greed for money.
ವ್ಯಸನೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾಢ್ಯಸ್ಯ ದುರ್ಗತಸ್ಯ ಚ ರಾಘವ.

ಅರ್ಥಂ ವಿರಾಗಾಃ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ತವಾಮಾತ್ಯಾ ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾಃ৷৷2.100.58৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾಃ well-informed, ತವ ಅಮಾತ್ಯಾಃ your ministers, ಆಢ್ಯಸ್ಯ of a rich man, ದುರ್ಗತಸ್ಯ ಚ to a poorman, ವ್ಯಸನೇ in times of hardship, ಅರ್ಥಮ್ any matter, ವಿರಾಗಾಃ impartially, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust they look at impartially.

O Bharata, I trust that your ministers are well-informed and look into all matters in times of hardship pertaining to whether a man is rich or poor without any bias to either.
ಯಾನಿ ಮಿಥ್ಯಾಭಿಶಸ್ತಾನಾಂ ಪತನ್ತ್ಯಶ್ರೂಣಿ ರಾಘವ.

ತಾನಿ ಪುತ್ರಾನ್ಪಶೂನ್ಘ್ನನ್ತಿ ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯರ್ಥಮನುಶಾಸತಃ৷৷2.100.59৷৷


ರಾಘವ Bharata, ಮಿಥ್ಯಾಭಿಶಸ್ತಾನಾಮ್ of those who are falsely accused, ಯಾನಿ ಅಶ್ರೂಣಿ those tears, ಪತನ್ತಿ fall, ತಾನಿ they, ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ for the sake of pleasure, ಅನುಶಾಸತಃ one who commands, ಪುತ್ರಾನ್ಪಶೂನ್ his sons and cattle, ಘ್ನನ್ತಿ they will destroy.

O Bharata, the tears falling from the eyes of persons, who are falsely accused and punished for the pleasure of the king will destroy his progeny and cattle as well.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ ಬಾಲಾಂಶ್ಚ ವೈದ್ಯಾಮುಖ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ರಾಘವ.

ದಾನೇನ ಮನಸಾ ವಾಚಾ ತ್ರಿಭಿರೇತೈರ್ಬುಭೂಷಸೇ৷৷2.100.60৷৷


ರಾಘವ Bharata, ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ the old, ಬಾಲಾಂಶ್ಚ the children, ವೈದ್ಯಮುಖ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ foremost of learned people, ದಾನೇನ with gifts, ಮನಸಾ with affection, ವಾಚಾ with kind words, ಏತೈಃ these, ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ with three, ಬುಭೂಷಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you thrive.

O Bharata, I trust you wish to thrive by treating the old, children and foremost of learned people with the three expedients namely gifts, affection and kind words.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಗುರೂಂಶ್ಚ ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ ತಾಪಸಾನ್ ದೇವತಾತಿಥೀನ್.

ಚೈತ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ಸಿಧ್ದಾರ್ಥಾನ್ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಶ್ಚ ನಮಸ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.100.61৷৷


ಗುರೂಂಶ್ಚ prceptors, ವೃದ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ the old, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ the ascetics, ದೇವತಾತಿಥೀನ್ gods and guests, ಚೈತ್ಯಾಂಶ್ಚ shrines, ಸಿಧ್ದಾರ್ಥಾನ್ acomplished men, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಶ್ಚ brahmins, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ನಮಸ್ಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are paying homage.

I trust you pay homage to the preceptors, the aged ones, ascetics, gods and guests, to shrines and to accomplished brahmins.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದರ್ಥೇನ ವಾ ಧರ್ಮಮರ್ಥಂ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ವಾ ಪುನಃ.

ಉಭೌ ವಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿಲೋಭೇನ ಕಾಮೇನ ಚ ನ ಬಾಧಸೇ৷৷2.100.62৷৷


ಅರ್ಥೇನ with prosperity, ಧರ್ಮಂ ವಾ or righteousness, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ with righteousness, ಅರ್ಥಂ ವಾ prosperity, ಪುನಃ again, ಪ್ರೀತಿಲೋಭೇನ longing for pleasure, ಕಾಮೇನ with desire for sensual enjoyment, ಉಭೌ both, ನ ಬಾಧಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are not thwarting.

I trust, righteousness for the sake of prosperity or prosperity for the sake of righteousness or both for the sake of sensual pleasure are not thwarted by you.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದರ್ಥಂ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ ಕಾಮಂ ಚ ಜಯತಾಂ ವರ.

ವಿಭಜ್ಯ ಕಾಲೇ ಕಾಲಜ್ಞ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ವರದ ಸೇವಸೇ৷৷2.100.63৷৷


ಜಯತಾಮ್ among the victorious, ವರ best, ಕಾಲಜ್ಞ one having the knowledge of time, ವರದ granter of boons (best of men), ಧರ್ಮಂಚ righteousness, ಕಾಮಂಚ legitimate pleasure, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all of them, ಕಾಲೇ proper time, ವಿಭಜ್ಯ dividing time for each, ಸೇವಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are attending.

O Bharata, the best among the victorious, conversant with timely actions and a bestower of boons! you are the best of men. I trust, you allocate adequate time for attending to all the three expedients of life like dharma, artha and kama.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾ ಶ್ಶರ್ಮ ಸರ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥಕೋವಿದಾಃ.

ಆಶಂಸನ್ತೇ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ! ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈಸ್ಸಹ৷৷2.100.64৷৷


ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ! O highly sagacious one, ಸರ್ವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಾರ್ಥ ಕೋವಿದಾಃ those who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures, ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಃ brahmins, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದೈಸ್ಸಹ along with the inhabitants of the city and country too, ತೇ your, ಶರ್ಮ happiness, ಆಶಂಸನ್ತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust they are seeking.

O highly sagacious Bharata, those brahmins who can comprehend the meaning of all scriptures along with the inhabitants of the city and country, I trust, are seeking your happiness.
ನಾಸ್ತಿಕ್ಯಮನೃತಂ ಕ್ರೋಧಂ ಪ್ರಮಾದಂ ದೀರ್ಘಸೂತ್ರತಾಮ್.

ಅದರ್ಶನಂ ಜ್ಞಾನವತಾಮಾಲಸ್ಯಂ ಪಞ್ಚವೃತ್ತಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.100.65৷৷

ಏಕಚಿನ್ತನಮರ್ಥಾನಾಮನರ್ಥಜ್ಞೈಶ್ಚ ಮನ್ತ್ರಣಮ್.

ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾನಾಮನಾರಮ್ಭಂ ಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ಯಾಪರಿರಕ್ಷಣಮ್৷৷2.100.66৷৷

ಮಙ್ಗಲಾದ್ಯಪ್ರಯೋಗಂ ಚ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ಥಾನಂ ಚ ಸರ್ವತಃ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ವಂ ವರ್ಜಯಸ್ಯೇತಾನ್ರಾಜದೋಷಾಂಶ್ಚತುರ್ದಶ৷৷2.100.67৷৷


ನಾಸ್ತಿಕ್ಯಮ್ atheism, ಅನೃತಮ್ falsehood, ಕ್ರೋಧಮ್ anger, ಪ್ರಮಾದಮ್ inattention, ದೀರ್ಘಸೂತ್ರತಾಮ್ procrastination, ಜ್ಞಾನವತಾಮ್ wise people's, ಅದರ್ಶನಮ್ evasion, ಆಲಸ್ಯಮ್ indolence, ಪಞ್ಚವೃತ್ತಿತಾಮ್ gratification of all five senses, ಅರ್ಥಾನಾಮ್ relating to the affairs (of the kingdom), ಏಕಚಿನ್ತನಮ್ thinking alone, ಅನರ್ಥಜ್ಞೈಃ by those proficient in worthless acts, ಮನ್ತ್ರಣಮ್ consultation, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾನಾಮ್ of acts decided upon, ಅನಾರಮ್ಭಮ್ not to implement, ಮನ್ತ್ರಸ್ಯ counsel, ಅಪರಿರಕ್ಷಣಮ್ not protecting, ಮಙ್ಲಾದಿ beginning of an auspicious note and the like, ಅಪ್ರಯೋಗಂ ಚ not to practise, ಸರ್ವತಃ on all sides, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ಥಾನಂ ಚ attacking all the enemies at a time, ಏತಾನ್ all these, ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ರಾಜದೋಷಾನ್ defects of the king, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ವರ್ಜಯಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you eschew.

I trust you eschew the fourteen faults of kings, like atheism, falsehood, anger, inattention, procrastination, evading the wise, indolence, gratification of all five senses, planning alone in the affairs of the kingdom, consultation with people who are proficient in worthless acts, failure to implement decisious, inability to keep the counsel secret and omission of auspicious practices and setting out against all the enemies at a time.
ದಶಪಞ್ಚಚತುರ್ವರ್ಗಾನ್ಸಪ್ತವರ್ಗಂ ಚ ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ.

ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಾಂ ಜಯಂ ಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ ಷಾಡ್ಗುಣ್ಯಂ ದೈವಮಾನುಷಮ್.

ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಃ O highly sagacious, ರಾಘವಃ Bharata, ದಶಪಞ್ಚಚತುರ್ವರ್ಗಾನ್ the fifteen of the four-fold divisions, ಸಪ್ತವರ್ಗಂ ಚ the seven divisions, ಅಷ್ಟವರ್ಗಮ್ the eight divisions, ತ್ರಿವರ್ಗಂ ಚ the three divisions, ತಿಸ್ರ: three, ವಿದ್ಯಾಃ ಚ kinds of knowledge, ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಾಮ್ of the senses, ಜಯಮ್ victory over, ಷಾಡಗುಣ್ಯಮ್ six qualities, ದೈವಮಾನುಷಮ್ evils arising from destiny and human agency, ಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ kritya, ವಿಂಶತಿವರ್ಗಂ ಚ division of twenty, ತಥಾ similarly, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್ Prakriti and Mandalas, ಯಾತ್ರಾದಣ್ಡವಿಧಾನಂ ಚ practices of yatra and chastisement, ದ್ವಿಯೋನಿಃ two sources of, ಸನ್ಧಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹೌ peace and war, ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ the true nature, ಬುಧ್ದ್ಯಾ by intellect, ಏತಾನ್ alone, ಯಥಾವತ್
appropriately, ಅನುಮನ್ಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you follow.

O highly sagacious Bharata, I trust, having understood their true nature you are appropriately following the ten, five and four divisions, the seven divisions, the eight divisions, the three divisions, three kinds of knowledge, victory over the senses, the six qualities, evils arising from destiny and human agency, kritya, division of twenty, similarly Prakriti and Mandalas and two sources of Yatra and chastisement and of peace and war.
ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಯಥೋದ್ದಿಷ್ಟೈಶ್ಚತುರ್ಭಿಸ್ತ್ರಿಭಿರೇವ ವಾ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸಮಸ್ತೈರ್ವ್ಯಸ್ತೈಶ್ಚ ಮನ್ತ್ರಂ ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಸೇ ಮಿಥಃ৷৷2.100.71৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯಥೋದ್ದಿಷ್ಟೈಃ as adumbrated in sacred texts, ಚತುರ್ಭಿಃ by four, ತ್ರಿಭಿರೇವ ವಾ or three, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ with counsellors, ಸಮಸ್ತೈ: together, ವ್ಯಸ್ತೈಶ್ಚ separately with each one, ಮಿಥ: in secrecy, ಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ counsel, ಮನ್ತ್ರಯಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you deliberate.

I trust you deliberate in secrecy on your counsel with three or four counsellors, together and separately with each one, as laid down in sacred texts.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಸಫಲಾ ವೇದಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ಸಫಲಾಃ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಃ.

ತೇ your knowledge of, ವೇದಾಃ Vedas, ಸಫಲಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust is fruitful, ತೇ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಃ your acts, ಸಫಲಾ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust are productive, ತೇ ದಾರಾಃ your wife, ಸಫಲಾಃ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust is useful, ತೇ ಶ್ರುತಮ್ the scriptures you have heard, ಸಫಲಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust, is useful.

I trust, the Vedas you have studied are fruitful, the acts which you commenced are productive, your wife is fruitful (blessed with a son) and the scriptures you studied are useful.
ಕಚ್ಚಿದೇಷೈವ ತೇ ಬುದ್ಧಿರ್ಯಥೋಕ್ತಾ ಮಮ ರಾಘವ.

ಆಯುಷ್ಯಾ ಚ ಯಶಸ್ಯಾ ಚ ಧರ್ಮಕಾಮಾರ್ಥ ಸಂಹಿತಾ৷৷2.100.73৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Bharata, ತೇ ಬುದ್ಧಿ: your intellect, ಆಯುಷ್ಯಾ is enhancing your life span, ಯಶಸ್ಯಾ ಚ augmenting your fame, ಧರ್ಮಕಾಮಾರ್ಥ ಸಂಹಿತಾ in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity, ಮಮ to (by) me, ಯಥಾ as, ಉಕ್ತಾ said, ಏಷೈವ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust it is in conformity with that.

O Bharata, I trust your intellect is in conformity with what I said conducive to long life, and fame in accordance with righteousness, (legitimate) pleasure and prosperity.
ಯಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ವರ್ತತೇ ತಾತೋ ಯಾಂ ಚ ನಃ ಪ್ರಪಿತಾಮಹಾಃ.

ತಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ವರ್ತಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಯಾಚ ಸತ್ಪಥಗಾ ಶುಭಾ৷৷2.100.74৷৷


ತಾತಃ our father, ಯಾಮ್ ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ whichever course, ವರ್ತತೇ is following, ಯಾಮ್ which course, ನಃ our, ಪ್ರಪಿತಾಮಹಾಃ followed by ancestors, ಯಾ ಚ ಸತ್ಪಥಗಾ which one walks the path of truth, ಶುಭಾ auspicious, ತಾಮ್ that, ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ course, ವರ್ತಸೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust, you follow.

I trust, you walk the auspicious path of truth (virtue) followed by our father and forefathers.
ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಸ್ವಾದು ಕೃತಂ ಭೋಜ್ಯಮೇಕೋ ನಾಶ್ನಾಸಿ ರಾಘವ.

ಕಚ್ಚಿದಾಶಂಸಮಾನೇಭ್ಯೋ ಮಿತ್ರೇಭ್ಯ ಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.100.75৷৷


ರಾಘವ Bharata, ಸ್ವಾದುಕೃತಮ್ prepared deliciously, ಭೋಜ್ಯಮ್ food, ಏಕಃ alone, ನಾಶ್ನಾಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are not partaking, ಅಶಂಸಮಾನೇಭ್ಯಃ to those who desire them, ಮಿತ್ರೇಭ್ಯಃ to friends, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛಸಿ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ I trust you are giving it.

O Bharata, I trust you do not partake delicious food all by yourself, and you share it with your friends when they want it.
ರಾಜಾ ತು ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಹಿ ಪಾಲಯಿತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾಮತಿರ್ದಣ್ಡಧರಃ ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್.

ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ಕತ್ಸ್ನಾಂ ವಸುಧಾಂ ಯಥಾವದಿತಶ್ಚ್ಯುತ ಸ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮುಪೈತಿ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್৷৷2.100.76৷৷


ಮಹಾಮತಿ: one who has great wisdom, ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ learned man, ರಾಜಾ ತು as for the king, ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಾಮ್ entire, ವಸುಧಾಮ್ earth, ಅವಾಪ್ಯ having acquired, ಪ್ರಜಾನಾಮ್ for people, ದಣ್ಡಧರಃ holding Danda in hand, ಯಥಾವತ್ in accordance with tradition, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ righteously, ಪಾಲಯಿತ್ವಾ having ruled, ಇತಃ from here, ಚ್ಯುತಃ having been released, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಉಪೈತಿ ಹಿ will ascend.

The highly sagacious and learned king, having acquired the entire earth and punishing the people in accordance with tradition and righteously ruling the kingdom, will ascend the his release (from this world).
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the hundredth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
