[Bharata pleads with Rama to return --- informs passing away of king Dasaratha.]

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ಕಿಂ ಮೇ ಧರ್ಮಾದ್ವಿಹೀನಸ್ಯ ರಾಜಧರ್ಮಃ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.101.1৷৷


ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ on listening, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ from righteousness, ವಿಹೀನಸ್ಯ devoid of, ಮೇ to me, ರಾಜಧರ್ಮಃ royal duties, ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ of what use to me.

On listening to Rama, Bharata replied Of what use shall be these royal duties to me, when I have fallen from righteousness?
ಶಾಶ್ವತೋಯಂ ಸದಾ ಧರ್ಮಃ ಸ್ಥಿತೋಸ್ಮಾಸು ನರರ್ಷಭ.

ಜೇಷ್ಠಪುತ್ರೇ ಸ್ಥಿತೇ ರಾಜನ್ನಕನೀಯಾನ್ನೃಪೋಭವೇತ್৷৷2.101.2৷৷


ನರರ್ಷಭ best of men, ಅಯಮ್ this one, ಶಾಶ್ವತಃ ancient, ಧರ್ಮಃ righteousness, ಅಸ್ಮಾಸು in our race, ಸದಾ always, ಸ್ಥಿತಃ exists, ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಪುತ್ರೇ the eldest son, ಸ್ಥಿತೇ is there, ಕನೀಯಾನ್ younger one, ನೃಪಃ king, ನ ಭವೇತ್ can never become.

O best of men! there is an ancient tradition in our race that the younger son cannot become king when the eldest is there.
ಸ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾಂ ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಗಚ್ಛ ರಾಘವ.

ಅಭಿಷೇಚಯಚಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಕುಲಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಭವಾಯ ನಃ৷৷2.101.3৷৷


ರಾಘವ Rama, ಸಃ he, ಮಯಾ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ with me, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಾಮ್ prosperous, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಗಚ್ಛ return, ನಃ for us, ಅಸ್ಯ ಕುಲಸ್ಯ for this race, ಭವಾಯ for the good of, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ yourself, ಅಭಿಷೇಚಯ coronated.

Therefore, O scion of the Raghu race, return along with me to prosperous Ayodhya and for the good of our race get your self coronated.
ರಾಜಾನಂ ಮಾನುಷಂ ಪ್ರಾಹು ರ್ದೇವತ್ವೇ ಸಮ್ಮತೋ ಮಮ.

ಯಸ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಥಸಹಿತಂ ವೃತ್ತಮಾಹುರಮಾನುಷಮ್৷৷2.101.4৷৷


ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಮಾನುಷಮ್ to be a man, ಪ್ರಾಹುಃ is said (by the wise), ಯಸ್ಯ whose, ಧರ್ಮಾರ್ಧಸಹಿತಮ್ in conformity with righteousness and state craft, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ conduct, ಅಮಾನುಷಮ್ beyond human capacity, ಆಹುಃ they say, ಮಮ my, ದೇವತ್ವೇ godly, ಸಮ್ಮತಃ has been claimed.

Other think the king to be a human, but to me, he is divine since his conduct and the statecraft are superhuman as they are in conformity with righteousness.
ಕೇಕಯಸ್ಥೇ ಚ ಮಯಿ ತು ತ್ವಯಿ ಚಾರಣ್ಯ ಮಾಶ್ರಿತೇ.

ದಿವಮಾರ್ಯೋ ಗತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಯಾಯಜೂಕಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಮತಃ৷৷2.101.5৷৷


ಮಯಿ me, ಕೇಕಯಸ್ಥೇ while I was in Kekaya, ತ್ವಯಿ ಚ when you, ಅರಣ್ಯಮ್ to the forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತೇ having taken refuge, ಆರ್ಯಃ revered, ಯಾಯಜೂಕಃ ever performing sacrifices, ಸತಾಮ್ by the virtuous, ಮತಃ esteemed, ರಾಜಾ king, ದಿವಮ್ to heaven, ಗತಃ went.

While I was in Kekaya and you took refuge in the forest, venerable king (Dasaratha), who was always engaged in sacrifices and was held in high esteem by the virtuous, ascended to heaven.
ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮಾತ್ರೇ ಭವತಿ ಸಸೀತೇ ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ.

ದುಃಖಶೋಕಾಭಿಭೂತಸ್ತು ರಾಜಾ ತ್ರಿದಿವಮಭ್ಯಗಾತ್৷৷2.101.6৷৷


ಸಸೀತೇ along with Sita, ಸಹಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ with Lakshmana, ಭವತಿ when you, ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಾನ್ತಮಾತ್ರೇ had just set out, ರಾಜಾ king, ದುಃಖಶೋಕಾಭಿಭೂತಃ grief-stricken, ತ್ರಿದಿವಮ್ to heaven, ಅಭ್ಯಗಾತ್ went.

As soon as you set out for the forest along with Sita and Lakshmana, the king, overwhelmed with grief, attained heaven.
ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಮುದಕಂ ಪಿತುಃ.

ಅಹಂ ಚಾಯಂ ಚ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ ಪೂರ್ವಮೇವ ಕೃತೋದಕೌ৷৷2.101.7৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ O best of men, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ಉದಕಮ್ traditional libation of water, ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಮ್ offer, ಅಹಂ ಚ I also, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಶ್ಚ Satrughna also, ಪೂರ್ವಮೇವ already, ಕೃತೋದಕೌ offered libations of water.

Arise, O best of men! and offer libations to our father. I and Satrughna have already done so.
ಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ ಕಿಲ ದತ್ತಂ ಹಿ ಪಿತೃಲೋಕೇಷು ರಾಘವ.

ಅಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಂ ಭವತೀತ್ಯಾಹುರ್ಭವಾಂಶ್ಚೈವ ಪಿತುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.101.8৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Rama, ಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ by a dear one, ದತ್ತಮ್ offered, ಪಿತೃಲೋಕೇಷು in the world of manes, ಅಕ್ಷಯ್ಯಮ್ ಭವತಿ becomes eternal, ಇತಿ thus, ಆಹುಃ ಖಲು people say indeed, ಭವಾಂಶ್ಚೈವ you alone, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ is beloved.

O son of Raghu's race, it is said that whatever is offered by a dear son becomes eternal in the world of manes. You alone are the beloved son of our father.
ತ್ವಾಮೇವ ಶೋಚಂಸ್ತವ ದರ್ಶನೇಪ್ಸುಸ್ತ್ವಯ್ಯೇವ ಸಕ್ತಾಮನಿವರ್ತ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮ್.

ತ್ವಯಾ ವಿಹೀನ ಸ್ತವ ಶೋಕಮಗ್ನಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಸಂಸ್ಮರನ್ನಸ್ತಮಿತಃ ಪಿತಾ ತೇ৷৷2.101.9৷৷


ತೇ your, ಪಿತಾ father, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಿಹೀನಃ separated, ತ್ವಾಮೇವ about you, ಶೋಚನ್ grieving, ತವ your, ದರ್ಶನೇಪ್ಸುಃ wishing to see, ತ್ವಯ್ಯೇವ in you alone, ಸಕ್ತಾಮ್ fixing, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮ್ mind, ಅನಿವರ್ತ್ಯ without diverting, ತವ your, ಶೋಕಮಗ್ನಃ immersed in sorrow, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಸಂಸ್ಮರನ್ remembering, ಅಸ್ತಮಿತಃ departed.

Your father, deprived of you, brooding over you, wishing to behold you, unable to divert his mind fixed on you, remembering you alone and immersed in sorrow departed (from this world).
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕೋತ್ತರ ಶತತಮ ಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the hundred-one sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
