[Wailing of all mothers on seeing Rama offering libations to his father in Mandakini.]

ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ ಪುರತಃ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ದಾರಾನ್ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ ತಂ ದೇಶಂ ರಾಮದರ್ಶನತರ್ಷಿತಃ৷৷2.103.1৷৷


ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ದಾರಾನ್ wives, ಪುರತಃ in front of, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having placed, ರಾಮದರ್ಶನತರ್ಷಿತಃ longing to see Rama, ತಂ ದೇಶಮ್ that place, ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ set out on foot.

Longing to see Rama, Vasistha, headed by the wives of Dasaratha, set out on foot
(where Rama was offering libations).
ರಾಜಪತ್ನ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯೋ ಮನ್ದಂ ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ಪ್ರತಿ.

ದದೃಶು ಸ್ತತ್ರ ತತ್ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸೇವಿತಮ್৷৷2.103.2৷৷


ರಾಜಪತ್ನ್ಯಶ್ಚ king's wives also, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ಪ್ರತಿ towards the river Mandakini, ಮನ್ದಮ್ slowly, ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯಃ while proceeding, ತತ್ರ there, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸೇವಿತಮ್ frequented by Rama and Lakshmana, ತತ್ ತೀರ್ಥಮ್ that bathing place, ದದೃಶುಃ beheld.

The wives of the king while proceeding slowly towards the river Mandakini beheld the bathing place frequented by Rama and Lakshmana.
ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣೇನ ಮುಖೇನ ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ.

ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಮಬ್ರವೀದ್ದೀನಾ ಯಾಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯಾ ರಾಜಯೋಷಿತಃ৷৷2.103.3৷৷


ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ಬಾಷ್ಪಪೂರ್ಣೇನ filled with tears, ಪರಿಶುಷ್ಯತಾ emaciated, ಮುಖೇನ with her countenance, ದೀನಾ in desolation, ಸುಮಿತ್ರಾಮ್ to Sumitra, ಯಾಃ ಅನ್ಯಾಃ the other, ರಾಜಯೋಷಿತಃ to wives of the king, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Kausalya, with eyes filled with tears and her face emaciated, addressing Sumitra and
the other wives of the king sadly said:
ಇದಂ ತೇಷಾಮನಾಥಾನಾಂ ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾಮ್.

ವನೇ ಪ್ರಾಕ್ಕಲನಂ ತೀರ್ಥಂ ಯೇ ತೇ ನಿರ್ವಿಷಯೀಕೃತಾಃ৷৷2.103.4৷৷


ಇದಮ್ this one, ಯೇ ತೇ those, ನಿರ್ವಿಷಯೀಕೃತಾಃ expelled from the country, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಆಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಕರ್ಮಣಾಮ್ men performing deeds with untiring energy, ಅನಾಥಾನಾಮ್ unfortunate ones, ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮ್ sufferings, ಪ್ರಾಕ್ಕಲನಮ್ to the east of, ವನೇ in the forest, ತೀರ್ಥಮ್ sacred place.

This is a sacred place to the east of the forest used by the unfortunate Rama, and Lakshmana of untiring energy and Sita expelled from the country and undergoing suffering.
ಇತ ಸ್ಸುಮಿತ್ರೇ! ಪುತ್ರಸ್ತೇ ಸದಾ ಜಲಮತನ್ದ್ರಿತಃ.

ಸ್ವಯಂ ಹರತಿ ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರ್ಮಮ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಕಾರಣಾತ್৷৷2.103.5৷৷


ಸುಮಿತ್ರೇ O Sumitra, ತೇ ಪುತ್ರಃ your son, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಃ Lakshmana, ಮಮ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ my son's, ಕಾರಣಾತ್ on account, ಸದಾ always, ಅತನ್ದ್ರಿತಃ without indolence, ಇತಃ from this place, ಜಲಮ್ water, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಹರತಿ carries.

O Sumitra, your son Lakshmana, free from laziness, always carries water from here for the sake of my son.
ಜಘನ್ಯಮಪಿ ತೇ ಪುತ್ರಃ ಕೃತವಾನ್ನತು ಗರ್ಹಿತಃ.

ಭ್ರಾತುರ್ಯದರ್ಥಸಹಿತಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ತ ದ್ವಿಹಿತಂ ಗುಣೈಃ৷৷2.103.6৷৷


ತೇ ಪುತ್ರಃ your son, ಜಘನ್ಯಮ್ servile task, ಅಪಿ although, ಕೃತವಾನ್ has done, ಗರ್ಹಿತಃ ತು is indeed contemptible, ನ not, ಯತ್ the service, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ to brother, ಅರ್ಥಸಹಿತಮ್ for the benefit of, ತತ್ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all that, ಗುಣೈಃ with virtues, ವಿಹಿತಮ್ is endowed with.

Your son, though engaged in servile tasks (like bringing water), is not to be held contemptible because all the services intended for the benefit of his brother are
prompted by virtue.
ಅದ್ಯಾಯ ಮಪಿ ತೇ ಪುತ್ರಃ ಕ್ಲೇಶಾನಾ ಮತಥೋಚಿತಃ.

ನೀಚಾನರ್ಥಸಮಾಚಾರಂ ಸಜ್ಜಂ ಕರ್ಮ ಪ್ರಮುಞ್ಚತು৷৷2.103.7৷৷


ಕ್ಲೇಶಾನಾಮ್ of suffering, ಅತಥೋಚಿತಃ unaccustomed, ಅಯಮ್ this, ತೇ ಪುತ್ರಃ ಅಪಿ your son also, ಅದ್ಯ now, ನೀಚಾನರ್ಥಸಮಾಚಾರಮ್ mean and distressing, ಸಜ್ಜಮ್ commenced, ಕರ್ಮ work, this service, ಪ್ರಮುಞ್ಚತು cease to perform.

This your son unaccustomed to, and undeserving of, any suffering may now give up this mean and distressing duty entrusted to him.
ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಗ್ರೇಷು ದರ್ಭೇಷು ಸಾ ದದರ್ಶ ಮಹೀತಲೇ.

ಪಿತುರಿಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಂ ನ್ಯಸ್ತಮಾಯತಲೋಚನಾ৷৷2.103.8৷৷


ಆಯತಲೋಚನಾ large-eyed, ಸಾ that Kausalya, ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಗ್ರೇಷು pointed towards south, ದರ್ಭೇಷು blades of darbha grass, ಮಹೀತಲೇ on the ground, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ನ್ಯಸ್ತಮ್ placed, ಇಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಮ್ cakes of ingudi pulp, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

That large-eyed Kausalya beheld the cakes of ingudi pulp placed by Rama for his father on a spread of darbha grass whose blades pointed toward the south.
ತಂ ಭೂಮೌ ಪಿತುರಾರ್ತೇನ ನ್ಯಸ್ತಂ ರಾಮೇಣ ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಾ.

ಉವಾಚ ದೇವೀ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ಸರ್ವಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.103.9৷৷


ದೇವೀ queen, ಸಾ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ that Kausalya, ಆರ್ತೇನ distressed, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ನ್ಯಸ್ತಮ್ placed, ತಮ್ that pinda (pinda=offerings made to the departed soul), ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ seeing, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ದಶರಥಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ to wives of Dasaratha, ಉವಾಚ said.

Seeing the pinda (edible offering made to the departed soul) placed on the ground for his father by the distressed Rama, queen Kausalya, addressing all the wives of Dasaratha, said:
ಇದಮಿಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನಾಥಸ್ಯ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ರಾಘವೇಣ ಪಿತುರ್ದತ್ತಂ ಪಶ್ಯತೈತದ್ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ৷৷2.103.10৷৷


ರಾಘವೇಣ by Rama, ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕುನಾಥಸ್ಯ for the sake of lord of the Ikshvaku race, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the magnanimous, ಪಿತುಃ father, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ for Dasaratha, ಯಥಾವಿಧಿ according to tradition, ದತ್ತಮ್ given, ಇದಮ್ this pinda, ಪಶ್ಯತ look at.

Have darsan of this pinda offered by Rama according to tradition to his magnanimous father, Dasaratha, lord of the Ikshvaku race.
ತಸ್ಯ ದೇವಸಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ನೈತದೌಪಯಿಕಂ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಭುಕ್ತಭೋಗಸ್ಯ ಭೋಜನಮ್৷৷2.103.11৷৷


ದೇವಸಮಾನಸ್ಯ of a man equal to god, ಭುಕ್ತಭೋಗಸ್ಯ of one who enjoyed every luxury, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the magnaniouous, ತಸ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಸ್ಯ of that lord of the earth, ಏತತ್ this, ಭೋಜನಮ್ food, ಔಪಯಿಕಮ್ is appropriate, ನ ಮನ್ಯೇ I don't think.

I do not think that this is an appropriate food for that god-like and great lord of the earth who enjoyed all luxury.
ಚತುರನ್ತಾಂ ಮಹೀಂ ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಸದೃಶೋ ವಿಭುಃ.

ಕಥಮಿಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಂ ಸ ಭುಕ್ತೇ ವಸುಧಾಧಿಪಃ৷৷2.103.12৷৷


ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಸದೃಶಃ resembling Indra, ವಿಭುಃ king, ಸಃ ವಸುಧಾಧಿಪಃ that lord of the earth, ಚತುರನ್ತಾಮ್ with four corners, ಮಹೀಮ್ the earth, ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ having enjoyed, ಇಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಮ್ the cake of pulp of ingudi, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಭುಕ್ತೇ can he eat?

How can Indra-like Dasaratha, having ruled the earth bounded by four oceans, eat a cake of ingudi pulp?
ಅತೋ ದುಃಖತರಂ ಲೋಕೇ ನ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮಾ.

ಯತ್ರ ರಾಮಃ ಪಿತುರ್ದದ್ಯಾದಿಙ್ಗುದಿಕ್ಷೋದಮೃದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್৷৷2.103.13৷৷


ಯತ್ರ at a point, ಋದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ (formerly) prosperous, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ಇಙ್ಗುದಿಕ್ಷೋದಮ್ cake of ingudi nuts, ದದ್ಯಾತ್ may offer, ಅತಃ more than this, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ದುಃಖತರಮ್ more painful, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ anything, ಮಾ to me, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ does not appear.

Rama (who was once) highly prosperous, had to offer the cake of ingudi pulp to his father. Nothing appears more painful to me than this in this world.
ರಾಮೇಣೇಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಂ ಪಿತುರ್ದತ್ತಂ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮೇ.

ಕಥಂ ದುಃಖೇನ ಹೃದಯಂ ನ ಸ್ಫೋಟತಿ ಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ৷৷2.103.14৷৷


ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಪಿತುಃ to father, ದತ್ತಮ್ offered, ಇಙ್ಗುದಿಪಿಣ್ಯಾಕಮ್ cake of ingudi pulp, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ on seeing, ಮೇ ಹೃದಯಮ್ my heart, ದುಃಖೇನ out of sorrow, ಸಹಸ್ರಧಾ into a thousand pieces, ಕಥಮ್
how, ನ ಸ್ಫೋಟತಿ not breaking?

Seeing the offering of cake of ingudi pulp by Rama to his father, how is it that my heart does not break into a thousand pieces in sorrow?
ಶ್ರುತಿಸ್ತು ಖಲ್ವಿಯಂ ಸತ್ಯಾ ಲೌಕಿಕೀ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಮಾ.

ಯದನ್ನಃ ಪುರುಷೋ ಭವತಿ ತದನ್ನಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ದೇವತಾಃ৷৷2.103.15৷৷


ಪುರುಷಃ man, ಯದನ್ನಃ ಭವತಿ whatever is his food, ತಸ್ಯ his, ದೇವತಾಃ gods, ತದನ್ನಾಃ they have the same food, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಲೌಕಿಕೀ well-known in the world, ಶ್ರುತಿಸ್ತು saying, ಸತ್ಯಾ as truthful, ಮಾ about (to) me, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾತಿ ಖಲು occurs to me.

The well-known saying in this world is that 'whatever food a man partakes, his gods also partake the same'. This dictum appears true (now).
ಏವಮಾರ್ತಾಂ ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯಸ್ತಾ ಜಗ್ಮುರಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ ತಾಂ ತದಾ.

ದದೃಶುಶ್ಚಾಶ್ರಮೇ ರಾಮಂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಚ್ಯುತಮಿವಾಮರಮ್৷৷2.103.16৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತಾಃ those, ಸಪತ್ನ್ಯಃ co-wives, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಆರ್ತಾಮ್ distressed, ತಾಮ್ her, ಆಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ having consoled, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went, ಆಶ್ರಮೇ in the hermitage, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಚ್ಯುತಮ್ fallen from heaven, ಅಮರಮಿವ like a god, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ದದೃಶುಶ್ಚ beheld.

The co-wives, having thus consoled the distressed Kausalya, went to the hermitage. There they beheld Rama who looked like a god dislodged from heaven.
ಸರ್ವಭೋಗೈಃ ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ರಾಮಂ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಾತರಃ.

ಆರ್ತಾ ಮುಮುಚುರಶ್ರೂಣಿ ಸಸ್ವರಂ ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ৷৷2.103.17৷৷


ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾಃ emaciated due to grief, ಮಾತರಃ mothers, ಸರ್ವಭೋಗೈಃ with all luxuries, ಪರಿತ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್ devoid of, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಆರ್ತಾಃ overcome with sorrow, ಸಸ್ವರಮ್ in loud voice, ಅಶ್ರೂಣಿ tears, ಮುಮುಚುಃ shed.

Beholding Rama devoid of all luxury, his mothers afflicted with grief, and overcome with sorrow, cried aloud, tears streaming down.
ತಾಸಾಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಚರಣಾನ್ ಶುಭಾನ್.

ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಂ ಮನುಜವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಸ್ಸರ್ವಾಸಾಂ ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರಃ৷৷2.103.18৷৷


ಮನುಜವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ best among men, ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರಃ true to his promise, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸಮುತ್ಥಾಯ having risen, ಸರ್ವಾಸಾಮ್ to all, ತಾಸಾಂ ಮಾತ್ರೂಣಾಮ್ of those mothers, ಶುಭಾನ್ auspicious, ಚರಣಾನ್ feet, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ clasped.

Rama, the best among men and true to his promise, rose and touched the auspicious feet of all his mothers (in reverence).
ತಾಃ ಪಾಣಿಭಿ ಸ್ಸುಖಸ್ಪರ್ಶೈರ್ಮೃದ್ವಙ್ಗುಲಿತಲೈ ಶ್ಶುಭೈಃ.

ಪ್ರಮಮಾರ್ಜೂ ರಜಃ ಪೃಷ್ಠಾದ್ರಾಮಸ್ಯಾಯತಲೋಚನಾಃ৷৷2.103.19৷৷


ಆಯತಲೋಚನಾಃ large-eyed ones, ತಾಃ they, ಸುಖಸ್ಪರ್ಶೈಃ with pleasant touch, ಮೃದ್ವಙ್ಗುಲಿತಲೈಃ with palms having delicate fingers, ಶುಭೈಃ by auspicious, ಪಾಣಿಭಿಃ with hands, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪೃಷ್ಠಾತ್ from the back of the body, ರಜಃ the dust, ಪ್ರಮಮಾರ್ಜುಃ wiped.

Those large-eyed queens, their palms with delicate fingers and with auspicious hands with a pleasant touch, wiped the dust from the back of his body.
ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರಪಿ ತಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ಮಾತೃ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ದುಃಖಿತಃ.

ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತಾಸಕ್ತಂ ಶನೈ ರಾಮಾದನನ್ತರಮ್৷৷2.103.20৷৷


ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರಪಿ Lakshmana also, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ತಾಃ ಮಾತ್ರೃ those mothers, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ after seeing, ದುಃಖಿತಃ overcome with grief, ರಾಮಾತ್ ಅನನ್ತರಮ್ following Rama, ಶನೈಃ slowly, ಆಸಕ್ತಮ್ with devotion,
ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ bowed with reverence.

On seeing his mothers, Lakshmana, too, was overcome with grief and with devotion followed Rama and slowly bowed to them with reverence.
ಯಥಾ ರಾಮೇ ತಥಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸರ್ವಾ ವವೃತಿರೇ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ.

ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ದಶರಥಾಜ್ಜಾತೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ ಶುಭಲಕ್ಷಣೇ৷৷2.103.21৷৷


ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ wives, ದಶರಥಾತ್ of Dasaratha, ಜಾತೇ born, ಶುಭಲಕ್ಷಣೇ possessing auspicious qualities, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇ in the matter of Lakshmana, ರಾಮೇ ಯಥಾ just as in the case of Rama, ತಥಾ similarly, ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ conduct, ವವೃತಿರೇ treated.

All the queens treated Lakshmana, born of Dasaratha and endowed with auspicious qualities, with the same love as they did to Rama.
ಸೀತಾಪಿ ಚರಣಾಂಸ್ತಾಸಾಮುಪಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ ದುಃಖಿತಾ.

ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂಣಾಮಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷೀ ಸಾ ಬಭೂವಾಗ್ರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಾ৷৷2.103.22৷৷


ಸಾ ಸೀತಾಪಿ that Sita too, ದುಃಖಿತಾ overcome with sorrow, ತಾಸಾಮ್ by those, ಶ್ವಶ್ರೂಣಾಮ್ of mothers-in-law, ಚರಣಾನ್ feet, ಉಪಸಙ್ಗೃಹ್ಯ grasping, ಅಶ್ರುಪೂರ್ಣಾಕ್ಷೀ eyes suffused with tears,
ಅಗ್ರತಃ before them, ಸ್ಥಿತಾ ಬಭೂವ stood.

Sita, too, overcome with grief, grasped the feet of her mothers-in-law and stood before them, her eyes full of tears.
ತಾಂ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ ದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಂ ಮಾತಾ ದುಹಿತರಂ ಯಥಾ.

ವನವಾಸಕೃಶಾಂ ದೀನಾಂ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.103.23৷৷


ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ದುಃಖಾರ್ತಾಮ್ anguished, ವನವಾಸಕೃಶಾಮ್ emaciated due to her stay in the forest, ದೀನಾಮ್ poor, ತಾಮ್ her, ಮಾತಾ mother, ದುಹಿತರಂ ಯಥಾ like a daughter, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ having embraced, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Like a mother to her daughter, Kausalya embraced the wretched Sita, who was afflicted with sorrow, and emaciated due to her stay in the forest, and said to her:
ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ ಸುತಾ ಸ್ನುಷಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ರಾಮಪತ್ನೀ ಕಥಂ ದುಃಖಂ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ನಿರ್ಜನೇ ವನೇ৷৷2.103.24৷৷


ವಿದೇಹರಾಜಸ್ಯ of the king of Videha, ಸುತಾ daughter, ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ Dasaratha's, ಸ್ನುಷಾ daughter-in-law, ರಾಮಪತ್ನೀ Rama's wife, ನಿರ್ಜನೇ in desolation, ವನೇ in the forest, ಕಥಮ್ how, ದುಃಖಮ್ grief, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ had undergone.

How is it that Sita, daughter of Janaka, king of Videha, daughter-in-law of Dasaratha and wife of Rama, has to undergo such hardships in the lonely forest.
ಪದ್ಮಮಾತಪಸನ್ತಪ್ತಂ ಪರಿಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮಿವೋತ್ಪಲಮ್.

ಕಾಞ್ಚನಂ ರಜಸಾ ಧ್ವಸ್ತಂ ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಂ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಿವಾಮ್ಬುದೈಃ৷৷2.103.25৷৷

ಮುಖಂ ತೇ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಾಂ ಶೋಕೋ ದಹತ್ಯಗ್ನಿರಿವಾಶ್ರಯಮ್.

ಭೃಶಂ ಮನಸಿ ವೈದೇಹಿ! ವ್ಯಸನಾರಣಿಸಮ್ಭವಃ৷৷2.103.26৷৷


ವೈದೇಹಿ! O Sita, ಆತಪಸನ್ತಪ್ತಮ್ scorched by sunshine, ಪದ್ಮಮ್ ಇವ like lotus, ಪರಿಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮ್ withered, ಉತ್ಪಲಮಿವ like water-lily, ರಜಸಾ by dust, ಧ್ವಸ್ತಮ್ defiled, ಕಾಞ್ಚನಮ್ ಇವ like gold, ಅಮ್ಬುದೈಃ with clouds, ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮ್ obscured, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮ್ ಇವ like the Moon, ತೇ ಮುಖಮ್ your countenance, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ on seeing, ವ್ಯಸನಾರಣಿಸಮ್ಭವಃ kindled from the faggots of calamities, ಶೋಕಃ grief, ಅಗ್ನಿಃ fire, ಆಶ್ರಯಮಿವ like the stick, its refuge, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಮನಸಿ in the mind, ಭೃಶಮ್ greatly, ದಹತಿ burning.

O Sita, after looking at your countenance, which is like a lotus, scorched by the sunshine, or like a withered water-lily or gold defiled by dust or the Moon obscured by the clouds, the fire of sorrow is burning my mind. The grief in my mind is like fire kindled from the arani (sacrificial faggots) that consumes its own souree. (On a circular wood piece, a wooden stick is placed and churned to produce fire specially in sacrifices is called arani.)
ಬ್ರುವನ್ತ್ಯಾಮೇವಮಾರ್ತಾಯಾಂ ಜನನ್ಯಾಂ ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜಃ.

ಪಾದಾವಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ ಚ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.103.27৷৷


ಆರ್ತಾಯಾಂ while in anguish, ಜನನ್ಯಾಮ್ mother, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಬ್ರುವನ್ತ್ಯಾಮ್ while speaking, ಭರತಾಗ್ರಜಃ Bharata's elder brother, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having approached, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ಯ Vasistha, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ clasped.

While Rama's mother was uttering such words in anguish, Rama reached Vasistha and clasped his feet with reverence.
ಪುರೋಹಿತಸ್ಯಾಗ್ನಿಸಮಸ್ಯ ವೈ ತದಾ ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇರಿನ್ದ್ರಮಿವಾಮರಾಧಿಪಃ.

ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ ಪಾದೌ ಸುಸಮೃದ್ಧತೇಜಸಸ್ಸಹೈವ ತೇನೋಪವಿವೇಶ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.103.28৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಅಗ್ನಿಸಮಸ್ಯ of a man equivalent to fire, ಸುಸಮೃದ್ಧ ತೇಜಸಃ of exceeding brilliance, ಪುರೋಹಿತಸ್ಯ family priest's, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಅಮರಾಧಿಪಃ king of the gods, ಇನ್ದ್ರಃ Indra, ಬೃಹಸ್ಪತೇರಿವ like Brihaspati's feet, ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ clasping, ತೇನ ಸಹೈವ with him, ಉಪವಿವೇಶ sat down.

Rama touched the feet of the family priest Vasistha, a man equivalent to effulgent fire like Indra, the lord of the gods, does to Brihaspati and sat down along with him.
ತತೋ ಜಘನ್ಯಂ ಸಹಿತೈ ಸ್ಸಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ ಪುರಪ್ರಧಾನೈಶ್ಚ ಸಹೈವ ಸೈನಿಕೈಃ.

ಜನೇನ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞತಮೇನ ಧರ್ಮವಾನುಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟೋ ಭರತ ಸ್ತದಾಗ್ರಜಮ್৷৷2.103.29৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತತಃ ಜಘನ್ಯಮ್ then behind them, ಧರ್ಮವಾನ್ righteous, ಸಃ ಭರತಃ ಸಹಿತೈಃ along with Bharata, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ with counsellors ಪುರಪ್ರಧಾನೈಶ್ಚ with leading citizens, ಸೈನಿಕೈಸ್ಸಹೈವ along with soldiers as well, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞತಮೇನ most knowledgeble one in the ways of righteousness, ಜನೇನ by men, ಅಗ್ರಜಮ್ elder brother, Rama, ಉಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟಃ sat down near him.

After Vasistha and Rama sat down, righteous Bharata sat close to his elder brother. Behind him sat his companions, leading citizens, soldiers and righteous men.
ಉಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟ ಸ್ತು ತದಾ ಸ ವೀರ್ಯವಾಂಸ್ತಪಸ್ವಿವೇಷೇಣ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ಶ್ರಿಯಾ ಜ್ವಲನ್ತಂ ಭರತಃ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ಯಥಾ ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಃ ಪ್ರಯತಃ ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಮ್৷৷2.103.30৷৷


ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ extremely powerful, ಸಃ that, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ತಪಸ್ವಿವೇಷೇಣ dressed as an ascetic, ಶ್ರಿಯಾ with majesty, ಜ್ವಲನ್ತಮ್ radiating, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಪ್ರಯತಃ purified by religious austerities, ಮಹೇನ್ದ್ರಃ great Indra, ಪ್ರಜಾಪತಿಂ ಯಥಾ like Brahma, the creator, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having looked at, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ತದಾ then, ಉಪೋಪವಿಷ್ಟಃ ತು sat next to him.

Beholding Rama attired like an ascetic but radiant with a majestic glow, the extremely valiant Bharata sat near him with folded palms like the great Indra purified by religious austerities sits near Brahma, the creator.
ಕಿಮೇಷ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರತೋದ್ಯ ರಾಘವಂ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ ಸತ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಚ ಸಾಧು ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ.

ಇತೀವ ತಸ್ಯಾರ್ಯಜನಸ್ಯ ತತ್ತ್ವತೋ ಬಭೂವ ಕೌತೂಹಲಮುತ್ತಮಂ ತದಾ৷৷2.103.31৷৷


ಏಷಃ this, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅದ್ಯ now, ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ having paid his homage, ಸತ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಚ also honouring him, ಸಾಧು of good, ಕಿಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ what words, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will speak, ಇತೀವ thus as if, ತದಾ of that, ತಸ್ಯ those, ಆರ್ಯಜನಸ್ಯ of nobility, ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ truly, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ great, ಕೌತೂಹಲಮ್ curiosity, ಬಭೂವ arose.

All noble people were truly filled with great curiosity as to what Bharata was going to speak, after paying his homage and honouring Rama.
ಸ ರಾಘವ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿ ಶ್ಚ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ಮಹಾನುಭಾವೋ ಭರತ ಶ್ಚ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ.

ವೃತಾಃ ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿ ಶ್ಚ ವಿರೇಜುರಧ್ವರೇ ಯಥಾ ಸದಸ್ಯೈ ಸ್ಸಹಿತಾಸ್ತ್ರಯೋಗ್ನಯಃ৷৷2.103.32৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಧೃತಿಃ steadfast in truth, ಸಃ ರಾಘವಶ್ಚ that Rama, ಮಹಾನುಭಾವಃ a man of great dignity, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕಃ practising righteouness, ಭರತಶ್ಚ Bharata as well, ಸುಹೃದ್ಭಿಃ by their friends, ವೃತಾಃ surrounded by, ಅಧ್ವರೇ in the sacrifice, ಸದಸ್ಯೈಃ with the officiating priests ಸಹಿತಾಃ along with, ತ್ರಯಃ the three, ಅಗ್ನಯಃ ಯಥಾ like fires, ವಿರೇಜುಃ were resplendent.

Rama who was steadfast in truth, Lakshmana of great dignity and righteous Bharata surrounded by their friends were as resplendent as three sacrificial fires encircled by officiating priests.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ತ್ಯ್ರುತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the one hundredthird sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
