[Bharata beseeches Rama repeatedly --- Rama justifies his obedience to his father's command.]

ತಂ ತು ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸಮಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಗುರವತ್ಸಲಮ್.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.104.1৷৷


ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ along with Lakshmana, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಗುರುವತ್ಸಲಮ್ to one devoted to elders, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ to brother, ತಮ್ that Bharata, ಸಮಾಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ having consoled, ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to question, ಸಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ commenced.

Rama with his brother Lakshmana having consoled Bharata who is ever devoted to elders began to question:
ಕಿಮೇತದಿಚ್ಛೇಯಮಹಂ ಶ್ರೋತುಂ ಪ್ರವ್ಯಾಹೃತಂ ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ತ್ವಮಾಗತೋ ದೇಶಮಿಮಂ ಚೀರಜಟಾಜಿನಃ৷৷2.104.2৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಚೀರಜಟಾಜಿನ: wearing bark-robes, matted locks and antelope skin, ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ for what reason, ಇಮಂ ದೇಶಮ್ to this region, ಆಗತಃ have come, ಏತತ್ ಕಿಮ್ what is it, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಪ್ರವ್ಯಾಹೃತಮ್ being related, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಶ್ರೋತುಮ್ to hear, ಇಚ್ಛೇಯಮ್ I desire.

I want to hear what brought you to this region with your bark-robes, matted locks and antelope skin.
ಕಿನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮಿಮಂ ದೇಶಂ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಜಟಾಧರಃ.

ಹಿತ್ವಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಸ್ತ್ವಂ ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ವಕ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.3৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಹಿತ್ವಾ leaving, ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಜಟಾಧರಃ wearing deer skin and matted hair, ಕಿನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for what reason, ಇಮಂ ದೇಶಮ್ this region, ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಃ have entered, ತತ್ that, ಸರ್ವಮ್ everything, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you.

What made you come to this region, leaving the kingdom and wearing deer skin and matted hair? You should tell me everything.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಃ ಕೈಕಯೀಪುತ್ರಃ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ ಬಲವದ್ಭೂಯಃ ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.104.4৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the magnanimous, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥೇನ by Rama, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ uttered, ಕೈಕಯೀಪುತ್ರಃ son of Kaikeyi, Bharata, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ joining the palms in reverence, ಭೂಯಃ again, ಬಲವತ್ strongly, ಪ್ರಗೃಹ್ಯ holding, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ this statement, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Thus enquired by the magnanimous Rama, Bharata, joining his palms tightly, replied:
ಆರ್ಯಂ ತಾತಃ ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಕರ್ಮ ಸುದುಷ್ಕರಮ್.

ಗತ ಸ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ৷৷2.104.5৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ತಾತಃ father, ಆರ್ಯಂ my esteemed brother, ಪರಿತ್ಯಜ್ಯ having abandoned, ಸುದುಷ್ಕರಮ್ impossible to perform, ಕರ್ಮ task, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having done, ಪುತ್ರಶೋಕಾಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ tortured by the grief due to separation from his son, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ heaven, ಗತಃ went.

O my revered sire! our mighty father, having performed an impossible task of banishing you to the forest, and tortured by grief due to separation from his son, went to heaven.
ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಾ ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಮಮ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಪರನ್ತಪ.

ಚಕಾರ ಸುಮಹತ್ಪಾಪಮಿದಮಾತ್ಮಯಶೋಹರಮ್৷৷2.104.6৷৷


ಪರನ್ತಪ O tormentor of enemies, Rama, ಮಮ my, ಮಾತ್ರಾ mother, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಾ woman, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by
Kaikeyi, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ instigated, ಆತ್ಮಯಶೋಹರಮ್ destroying his reputation, ಸುಮಹತ್ great, ಇದಂ ಪಾಪಮ್ this sin, ಚಕಾರ commited.

O Rama, tormentor of enemies! having been instigated by a woman, my mother
Kaikeyi, committed this great sin of destroying his (Dasaratha's) reputation.
ಸಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಫಲಮಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ವಿಧವಾ ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾ.

ಪತಿಷ್ಯತಿ ಮಹಾಘೋರೇ ನಿರಯೇ ಜನನೀ ಮಮ৷৷2.104.7৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಜನನೀ mother, ಸಾ that lady, ರಾಜ್ಯಫಲಮ್ fruit of kingodm, ಅಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ without acquiring, ವಿಧವಾ widow, ಶೋಕಕರ್ಶಿತಾ formented with grief, ಮಹಾಘೋರೇ dreadful, ನಿರಯೇ hell, ಪತಿಷ್ಯತಿ will fall.

My mother, formented with grief and with the fruit of the kingdom forfeited, and cursed with widowhood, will fall into the dreadful hell.
ತಸ್ಯ ಮೇ ದಾಸಭೂತಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.

ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ ಚಾದ್ಯೇವ ರಾಜ್ಯೇನ ಮಘವಾನಿವ৷৷2.104.8৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ such, ದಾಸಭೂತಸ್ಯ servant I am, ಮೇ to me, ಪ್ರಸಾದಮ್ favour, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you, ಅದ್ಯೇವ now itself, ಮಘವಾನಿವ like Indra, ರಾಜ್ಯೇನ in the kingdom, ಅಭಿಷಿಞ್ಚಸ್ವ be coronated.

It behoves you to grant me a favour. I am like your servant. Now get yourself coronated in the kingdom like Indra.
ಇಮಾಃ ಪ್ರಕೃತಯ ಸ್ಸರ್ವಾ ವಿಧವಾ ಮಾತರಶ್ಚ ಯಾಃ.

ತ್ವತ್ಸಕಾಶಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.9৷৷


ಇಮಾಃ these, ಸರ್ವಾಃ all, ಪ್ರಕೃತಯಃ subjects, ವಿಧವಾಃ widows, ಮಾತರಶ್ಚ those mothers, ತ್ವತ್ಸಕಾಶಮ್
to your proximity, ಅನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ have reached, ಪ್ರಸಾದಮ್ favour, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you.

All these subjects and your widowed mothers have come to you. It behoves you to grant them this favour.
ತದಾನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಚ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಚಾತ್ಮನಿ ಮಾನದ!.

ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುಹಿ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಸಕಾಮಾನ್ಸುಹೃದಃ ಕುರು৷৷2.104.10৷৷


ಮಾನದ! O bestower of honour, ತತ್ for that reason, ಆನುಪೂರ್ವ್ಯಾ by succession, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ appropriate, ಆತ್ಮನಿ in you, ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಚ is appropriate, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ righteously, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುಹಿ you may obtain, ಸುಹೃದಃ friends, ಸಕಾಮಾನ್ having fulfilled their desire, ಕುರು make them.

O bestower of honour! by the law of primogeniture and as a worthy successor it is appropriate that you should accept the kingdom righteously and fulfil the desire of your friends.
ಭವತ್ವವಿಧವಾ ಭೂಮಿ ಸ್ಸಮಗ್ರಾ ಪತಿನಾ ತ್ವಯಾ.

ಶಶಿನಾ ವಿಮಲೇನೇವ ಶಾರದೀ ರಜನೀ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.104.11৷৷


ಸಮಗ್ರಾ this entire, ಭೂಮಿಃ earth, ಶಾರದೀ relating to autumn, ರಜನೀ ಯಥಾ like night, ಪತಿನಾ as lord, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ವಿಮಲೇನ by the immaculate, ಶಶಿನಾ ಇವ like the Moon, ಅವಿಧವಾ ಭವತು let it be a widow no more.

Like an autumnal night with the immaculate Moon, let this entire earth cease to be a widow by securing you as her lord.
ಏಭಿಶ್ಚ ಸಚಿವೈಸ್ಸಾರ್ಧಂ ಶಿರಸಾ ಯಾಚಿತೋ ಮಯಾ.

ಭ್ರಾತು ಶ್ಶಿಷ್ಯಸ್ಯ ದಾಸಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.12৷৷


ಏಭಿಃ by these, ಸಚಿವೈಃ ಸಾರ್ಧಮ್ with ministers, ಮಯಾ by me, ಶಿರಸಾ with head bowed down, ಯಾಚಿತಃ has been besought, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ of a brother, ಶಿಷ್ಯಸ್ಯ of a disciple, ದಾಸಸ್ಯ of a slave, ಪ್ರಸಾದಮ್ favour, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves you.

With my head bowed down, I beseech you along with all these ministers to show favour to me who is your brother, disciple and slave.
ತದಿದಂ ಶಾಶ್ವತಂ ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಂ ಸರ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್.

ಪೂಜಿತಂ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ನಾತಿಕ್ರಮಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.13৷৷


ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ O best among men, ತತ್ for that reason, ಶಾಶ್ವತಮ್ eternal, ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಮ್ hereditary, ಪೂಜಿತಮ್ venerable, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ಇದಮ್ this order, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್ the whole order of subjects, ಅತಿಕ್ರಮಿತುಮ್ to transgress, ನ ಅರ್ಹತಿ it does not behove you.

O best among men, it does not behove you to transgress the prayers of the whole order of subjects and ministers to assume this hereditary and perpetual order.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾಬಾಹು ಸ್ಸಬಾಷ್ಪಃ ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತಃ.

ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಶಿರಸಾ ಪಾದೌ ಜಗ್ರಾಹ ವಿಧಿವತ್ಪುನಃ৷৷2.104.14৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ಕೈಕಯೀಸುತಃ Kaikeyi's son, Bharata, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಸಬಾಷ್ಪಃ with tearful eyes, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಪಾದೌ feet, ಪುನಃ again, ವಿಧಿವತ್ in accordance with tradition, ಶಿರಸಾ with his head, ಜಗ್ರಾಹ grasped.

Having said thus, the mighty-armed Bharata, in accordance with tradition, grasped with tearful eyes the feet of Rama again with his head.
ತಂ ಮತ್ತಮಿವ ಮಾತಙ್ಗಂ ನಿಃಶ್ವಸನ್ತಂ ಪುನ ಪುನಃ.

ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಭರತಂ ರಾಮಃ ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.104.15৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ repeatedly, ನಿಃಶ್ವಸನ್ತಮ್ heaving sighs, ಮತ್ತಮ್ in rut, ಮಾತಙ್ಗಮ್ ಇವ resembling an elephant, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, ತಂ ಭರತಮ್ that Bharata, ಪರಿಷ್ವಜ್ಯ embracing, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Rama embraced his brother Bharata who repeatedly heaved sighs and resembled an
elephant in rut, and said:
ಕುಲೀನಸ್ಸತ್ತ್ವಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಸ್ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ ಚರಿತವ್ರತಃ.

ರಾಜ್ಯಹೇತೋಃ ಕಥಂ ಪಾಪಮಾಚರೇತ್ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧೋ ಜನಃ৷৷2.104.16৷৷


ಕುಲೀನಃ a man of noble birth, ಸತ್ವಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಃ endowed with energy, ತೇಜಸ್ವೀ powerful, ಚರಿತವ್ರತಃ
adherent to one's vows, ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಃ like you, ಜನಃ a man, ರಾಜ್ಯಹೇತೋಃ for the sake of kingdom, ಪಾಪಮ್ sin, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಆಚರೇತ್ will commit?

How can a man like you, born of a noble race, endowed with energy, powerful and adherent to vows, commit a sin for the sake of a kingdom?
ನ ದೋಷಂ ತ್ವಯಿ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಮಪ್ಯರಿಸೂದನ.

ನ ಚಾಪಿ ಜನನೀಂ ಬಾಲ್ಯಾತ್ತ್ವಂ ವಿಗರ್ಹಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.17৷৷


ಅರಿಸೂದನ O destroyer of enemies!, ತ್ವಯಿ in you, ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಮಪಿ slightest, ದೋಷಮ್ fault, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not find, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಬಾಲ್ಯಾತ್ out of childishness, ಜನನೀಂ your mother, ವಿಗರ್ಹಿತುಮ್ to reproach, ನಾರ್ಹಸಿ ಚಾಪಿ does not behove you.

O destroyer of enemies, I do not find even slightest fault with you. Like a child, it does not behove you to reproach your mother.
ಕಾಮಕಾರೋ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ! ಗುರೂಣಾಂ ಸರ್ವದಾನಘ.

ಉಪಪನ್ನೇಷು ದಾರೇಷು ಪುತ್ರೇಷು ಚ ವಿಧೀಯತೇ৷৷2.104.18৷৷


ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ! sagacious, ಅನಘ sinless, ಗುರೂಣಾಮ್ of elders, ಉಪಪನ್ನೇಷು when married, ದಾರೇಷು in relation to their wives, ಪುತ್ರೇಷು ಚ also sons, ಸರ್ವದಾ always, ಕಾಮಕಾರಃ acting at will, ವಿಧೀಯತೇ is laid down.

O sagacious and sinless one, it is laid down (in sastras) that elders when married can always act at their free will towards their wives and sons.
ವಯಮಸ್ಯ ಯಥಾ ಲೋಕೇ ಸಙ್ಖ್ಯಾತಾ ಸ್ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಸಾಧುಭಿಃ.

ಭಾರ್ಯಾಃ ಪುತ್ರಾಶ್ಚ ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ತ್ವಮನುಜ್ಞಾತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ৷৷2.104.19৷৷


ಸೌಮ್ಯ O handsome one, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಭಾರ್ಯಾಃ wives, ಪುತ್ರಾಶ್ಚ sons, ಶಿಷ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ disciples, ಸಾಧುಭಿಃ by virtuous men, ಯಥಾ as, ಸಂಖ್ಯಾತಾಃ have been treated, ವಯಮ್ we, ಅಸ್ಯ for this (king Dasaratha, etc), ತ್ವಂ you, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತುಂ to permit, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it behoves you.

O handsome one, you should treat us the way the virtuous treat their wives, sons and disciples in this world.
ವನೇ ವಾ ಚೀರವಸನಂ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಮ್.

ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ವಾಪಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ಮಾಂ ವಾಸಯಿತುಮೀಶ್ವರಃ৷৷2.104.20৷৷


ಸೌಮ್ಯ O handsome one, ಚೀರವಸನಮ್ dressed in bark robes, ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಜಿನಾಮ್ಬರಮ್ with antelope skin as garment, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ the maharaja (Dasaratha), ವನೇ ವಾ either in the forest, ರಾಜ್ಯೇ ವಾಪಿ or in the kingdom, ವಾಸಯಿತುಮ್ to accommodate me, ಈಶ್ವರಃ is competent.

O handsome one, king Dasaratha is alone competent to accommodate me in the forest wearing bark robes and antelope skin as garment or install me in the kingdom.
ಯಾವತ್ಪಿತರಿ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೇ ಗೌರವಂ ಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್.

ತಾವದ್ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಜನನ್ಯಾಮಪಿ ಗೌರವಮ್৷৷2.104.21৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಭೃತಾಮ್ among the protectors of righteousness, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ best, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೇ conversant with the ways of righteousness, ಪಿತರಿ in father, ಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್ revered by the world, ಯಾವತ್ how much, ಗೌರವಮ್ honour, ಜನನ್ಯಾಮಪಿ even for mother, ತಾವತ್ that much, ಗೌರವಮ್ honour, should be shown.

O best among the protectors of righteousness! the honour shown to our father who is conversant with the ways of righteousness and much revered by the world ought to be shown towards our mother also.
ಏತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ವನಂ ಗಚ್ಛೇತಿ ರಾಘವ!.

ಮಾತಾಪಿತೃಭ್ಯಾಮುಕ್ತೋಹಂ ಕಥಮನ್ಯತ್ಸಮಾಚರೇತ್৷৷2.104.22৷৷


ರಾಘವ! O Bharata, ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ of righteous conduct, ಏತಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by these two, ಮಾತಾಪಿತೃಭ್ಯಾಮ್ by the father and mother, ವನಮ್ to forest, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been told, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಅನ್ಯತ್ other than this, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಸಮಾಚರೇತ್ can act?

O Bharata, I have been commanded by our righteous father and mother to go to the forest. How can any one act otherwise?
ತ್ವಯಾ ರಾಜ್ಯಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್.

ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಂ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ ಮಯಾ ವಲ್ಕಲವಾಸಸಾ৷৷2.104.23৷৷


ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್ honoured by the the world, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ is to be obtained, ಮಯಾ by me, ವಲ್ಕಲವಾಸಸಾ with bark-robes as garments, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯೇ in Dandaka forest, ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಮ್ I must live.

You shall rule the kingdom well-honoured by the people in Ayodhya and I shall live in Dandaka forest wearing bark as garments.
ಏವಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ವಿಭಾಗಂ ಲೋಕಸನ್ನಿಧೌ.

ವ್ಯಾದಿಶ್ಯ ಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ದಿವಂ ದಶರಥೋ ಗತಃ৷৷2.104.24৷৷


ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ great king, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ of great splendour, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಲೋಕಸನ್ನಿಧೌ in the presence of people, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವಿಭಾಗಮ್ apportionment, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having made, ವ್ಯಾದಿಶ್ಯ ಚ having commanded, ದಿವಮ್ to heaven, ಗತಃ went.

The maharja of great radiance made this division in the presence of people and after commanding thus, ascended heaven.
ಸ ಚ ಪ್ರಮಾಣಂ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ರಾಜಾ ಲೋಕಗುರುಸ್ತವ.

ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ಲೋಕಗುರುಃ revered by the world, ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ that king, ತವ your, ಪ್ರಮಾಣಮ್
proclamation, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ದತ್ತಮ್ bestowed, ಯಥಾಭಾಗಮ್ that portion, ಉಪಭೋಕ್ತುಮ್ to enjoy, ಅರ್ಹಸಿ behoves you.

The proclamation of that righteous king revered by the world shall be your guide. You
should enjoy that portion bestowed by father.
ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಸಮಾಸ್ಸೌಮ್ಯ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ.

ಸೌಮ್ಯ O handsome one, ಅಹಂ ತು as for myself, ಚತುರ್ದಶ fourteen, ಸಮಾಃ years, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ Dandaka forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ taking refuge, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ magnanimous, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ದತ್ತಮ್ bestowed, ಭಾಗಮ್ portion, ಉಪಭೋಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ I will enjoy.

O handsome one, as for myself, I shall enjoy the portion bestowed on me by my magnanimous father and shall take refuge in the Dandaka forest for fourteen years.
ಯದಬ್ರವೀನ್ಮಾಂ ನರಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಃ ಪಿತಾ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ವಿಬುಧಾಧಿಪೋಪಮಃ.

ತದೇವ ಮನ್ಯೇ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನೋ ಹಿತಂ ನ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೇಶ್ವರ ಭಾವಮಪ್ಯಯಮ್৷৷2.104.27৷৷


ನರಲೋಕಸತ್ಕೃತಃ honoured by the men of the world, ಪಿತಾ father, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ high-souled, ವಿಬುಧಾಧಿಪೋಪಮಃ equal to the king of the gods, ಯತ್ whatever, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ತದೇವ that only, ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನ: the ulitimate, ಹಿತಂ good, ಮನ್ಯೇ I regard it, ಸರ್ವಲೋಕೇಶ್ವರ: the will of the lord of all the worlds, ಭಾವಮಪ್ಯಯಮ್ ನ should not be allowed to vanish.

I think what my great father, who is honoured by all men, and an equal to Indra, ordered is for my highest welfare. The will of the overlord of the world should not be done away with.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುರುತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the one hundredfourth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
