[Rama advises Bharata to return back and rule the kingdom.]

ಪುನರೇವಂ ಬ್ರುವಾಣಂ ತಂ ಭರತಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾಗ್ರಜಃ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ತತ ಶ್ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ ಜ್ಞಾತಿಮಧ್ಯೇಭಿಸತ್ಕೃತಃ৷৷2.107.1৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ prosperous, ಅಭಿಸತ್ಕೃತಃ well-honoured, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾಗ್ರಜಃ Lakshmana's elder brother, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಮಧ್ಯೇ amidst his relatives, ಪುನಃ again, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಬ್ರುವಾಣಮ್ speaking, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

Well-honoured in the midst of relatives, the celebrated Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana, then said to Bharata who was going to speak again.
ಉಪಪನ್ನಮಿದಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಯತ್ತ್ವಮೇವಮಭಾಷಥಾಃ.

ಜಾತಃ ಪುತ್ರೋ ದಶರಥಾತ್ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಜಸತ್ತಮಾತ್৷৷2.107.2৷৷


ರಾಜಸತ್ತಮಾತ್ from the celebrated king, ದಶರಥಾತ್ from Dasaratha, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಮ್ to Kaikeyi, ಜಾತಃ born, ಪುತ್ರಃ son, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಯತ್ which, ಅಭ್ಯಭಾಷಥಾಃ has spoken, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಉಪಪನ್ನಮ್ is appropriate.

Appropriate are the words spoken by you born to the celebrated king Dasaratha through Kaikeyi.
ಪುರಾ ಭ್ರಾತಃ ಪಿತಾ ನ ಸ್ಸ ಮಾತರಂ ತೇ ಸಮುದ್ವಹನ್.

ಮಾತಾಮಹೇ ಸಮಾಶ್ರೌಷೀದ್ರಾಜ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಮನುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.107.3৷৷


ಭ್ರಾತಃ my dear brother, ಪುರಾ earlier, ಸಃ that, ನಃ ಪಿತಾ our father, ತೇ ಮಾತರಮ್ to your mother, ಸಮುದ್ವಹನ್ at the time of wedding, ಮಾತಾಮಹೇ to (your) maternal grandfather, ಅನುತ್ತಮಮ್ the best, ರಾಜ್ಯಶುಲ್ಕಮ್ kingdom with good revenue, ಸಮಾಶ್ರೌಷೀತ್ had promised.

Earlier when our father was to wed your mother, O dear brother, he had promised to your maternal grandfather that he would confer (on her) a kingdom with good revenue.
ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ಚ ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇ ಜನನ್ಯೈ ತವ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ.

ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ದದೌ ರಾಜಾ ವರಮಾರಾಧಿತಃ ಪ್ರಭುಃ৷৷2.107.4৷৷


ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ king, ಪ್ರಭುಃ lord, ರಾಜಾ king (Dasaratha), ದೈವಾಸುರೇ between gods and demons, ಸಙ್ಗ್ರಾಮೇ in the battle, ಆರಾಧಿತಃ being propitialed, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಃ exceedingly pleased, ತವ ಜನನ್ಯೈ to your mother, ವರಂ ಚ boon, ದದೌ granted.

Thereafter in the battle between gods and demons, the able king (Dasaratha) pleased (with your mother) granted her a boon (as a token of gratitude).
ತತಸ್ಸಾ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರಾವ್ಯ ತವ ಮಾತಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ಅಯಾಚತ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಂ ದ್ವೌ ವರೌ ವರವರ್ಣಿನೀ৷৷2.107.5৷৷

ತವ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಮಮ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಂ ತಥಾ.

ತೌ ಚ ರಾಜಾ ತದಾ ತಸ್ಯೈ ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪ್ರದದೌ ವರೌ৷৷2.107.6৷৷


ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ O tiger among men, ತತಃ thereafter, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ illustrious, ವರವರ್ಣಿನೀ of best (fair) complexion, ತವ ಮಾತಾ your mother, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರಾವ್ಯ making him promise, ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ to best of men, ತವ for you, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ತಥಾ likewise, ಮಮ to me, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜನಮ್ banishment, ದ್ವೌ two, ವರೌ boons, ಅಯಾಚತ demanded, ತದಾ then, ರಾಜಾ ಚ king also, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ bound by agreement, ತೌ ವರೌ those two boons, ತಸ್ಯೈ for her, ಪ್ರದದೌ granted.

Thereafter, O tiger among men, your illustrious mother of fair complexion, under oath demanded of that best of men, king Dasaratha, the two boons, namely kingdom for you and banishment for me. Bound by such agreement (oath), the king granted her the boons.
ತೇನ ಪಿತ್ರಾಹಮಪ್ಯತ್ರ ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ.

ಚತುರ್ದಶ ವನೇ ವಾಸಂ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ವರದಾನಿಕಮ್৷৷2.107.7৷৷


ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ O best of men, ತೇನ that is why, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಅಹಮಪಿ even I also, ವರದಾನಿಕಮ್ as per the boon, ಚತುರ್ದಶ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ fourteen years, ಅತ್ರ here, ವನೇ in the forest, ವಾಸಮ್ to dwell, ನಿಯುಕ್ತಃ have been ordered.

O best of men, that is why I have been ordered by father to live in the forest for fourteen years as per the (condition of the) boon.
ಸೋಹಂ ವನಮಿದಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೋ ನಿರ್ಜನಂ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನ್ವಿತಃ.

ಸೀತಯಾ ಚಾಪ್ರತಿದ್ವನ್ದ್ವ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯವಾದೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಪಿತುಃ৷৷2.107.8৷৷


ಅಹಮ್ I, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಾನ್ವಿತಃ accompanied by Lakshmana, ಅಪ್ರತಿದ್ವನ್ದ್ವಃ unrivalled, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ಸತ್ಯವಾದೇ truthfulness of words, ಸ್ಥಿತಃ bent upon, ಸೀತಯಾ ಚ with Sita, ನಿರ್ಜನಮ್ lonely, ಇದಂ ವನಮ್ this forest, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ I have come.

I have come to this lonely forest accompanied by Lakshmana and Sita, bent upon upholding the truth of our unrivalled father's words.
ಭವಾನಪಿ ತಥೇತ್ಯೇವ ಪಿತರಂ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಮ್.

ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹತಿ ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವಾಭಿಷೇಚನಾತ್৷৷2.107.9৷৷


ರಾಜೇನ್ದ್ರ O Indra among kings, ಭವಾನಪಿ you also, ತಥೇತ್ಯೇವ likewise, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ quickly, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಾತ್ by coronation, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಮ್ true to his word, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to do, ಅರ್ಹತಿ should.

O Indra among kings, let your coronation be performed without delay since you are
worthy and at the same time the truthfulness of our father's words be honoured.
ಋಣಾನ್ಮೋಚಯ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಮತ್ಕೃತೇ ಭರತ ಪ್ರಭುಮ್.

ಪಿತರಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ಮಾತರಂ ಚಾಭಿನನ್ದಯ৷৷2.107.10৷৷


ಭರತ O Bharata, ಮತ್ಕೃತೇ for my sake, ಪ್ರಭುಮ್ competent, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ king, ಋಣಾತ್ from his debt
(vow), ಮೋಚಯ redeem, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ one who knows righteousness, ಪಿತರಮ್ ಚಾಪಿ father also, ಮಾತರಂ ಚ and mother, ಅಭಿನನ್ದಯ honour.

O Bharata, release for my sake the competent king from his debt (of vow) and honour the righteous father and the mother as well.
ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಹಿ ಪುರಾ ತಾತ ಶ್ರುತಿರ್ಗೀತಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಾ.

ಗಯೇನ ಯಜಮಾನೇನ ಗಯೇಷ್ವೇವ ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ಪ್ರತಿ৷৷2.107.11৷৷


ತಾತ dear (brother), ಪುರಾ formerly, ಗಯೇಷ್ವೇವ at a place known as Gaya, ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ ಪ್ರತಿ intended for ancestors, ಯಜಮಾನೇನ performing sacrifice, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಾ by an illustrious one, ಗಯೇನ by Gaya, ಗೀತಾ chanted, ಶ್ರುತಿಃ Vedic hymn, ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಹಿ is heard.

Dear (brother), it is heard that long ago an illustrious king while performing a sacrifice intended for ancestors at a sacred place known as Gaya, the sacrificer Gaya chanted a Vedic hymn as follows:
ಪುನ್ನಾಮ್ನೋ ನರಕಾದ್ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪಿತರಂ ತ್ರಾಯತೇ ಸುತಃ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಪುತ್ರ ಇತಿ ಪ್ರೋಕ್ತಃ ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ಯತ್ಪಾತಿ ವಾ ಸುತಃ৷৷2.107.12৷৷


ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ since, ಸುತಃ son, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ಪುನ್ನಾಮ್ನಃ by name 'Put', ನರಕಾತ್ from hell, ತ್ರಾಯತೇ delivers, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ for that reason, ಯಃ who, ಸರ್ವತಃ in everyway, ಪಿತ್ರೂನ್ ancestors, ಪಾತಿ protects, he, ಪುತ್ರ: ಇತಿ as putra, ಪ್ರೋಕ್ತಃ has been told.

Putra is so called as he delivers his father from a hell known as Put and protects the ancestors in all possible ways.
ಏಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾ ಬಹವಃ ಪುತ್ರಾ ಗುಣವನ್ತೋ ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾಃ.

ತೇಷಾಂ ವೈ ಸಮವೇತಾನಾಮಪಿ ಕಶ್ಚಿದ್ಗಯಾಂ ವ್ರಜೇತ್৷৷2.107.13৷৷


ಗುಣವನ್ತಃ virtuous, ಬಹುಶ್ರುತಾಃ learned, ಬಹವಃ many, ಪುತ್ರಾಃ sons, ಏಷ್ಟವ್ಯಾಃ are to be desired, ಸಮವೇತಾನಾಮ್ together with, ತೇಷಾಮ್ from among them, ಕಶ್ಚಿದಪಿ any one of them atleast, ಗಯಾಮ್
to Gaya, ವ್ರಜೇತ್ might go.

One should desire many virtuous and learned sons so that at least one of them may go to Gaya (to perform the father's obsequies).
ಏವಂ ರಾಜರ್ಷಯ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಪ್ರತೀತಾ ರಾಜನನ್ದನ.

ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ರಾಹಿ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಪಿತರಂ ನರಕಾತ್ಪ್ರಭೋ৷৷2.107.14৷৷


ರಾಜನನ್ದನ ಭೋ O enhancer of the king's delight, ಸರ್ವೇ all, ರಾಜರ್ಷಯಃ rajarsis, ಏವಮ್ this way, ಪ್ರತೀತಾಃ have decided, ಪ್ರಭೋ O lord, ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ O best of men, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಪಿತರಮ್ father, ನರಕಾತ್ against hell, ತ್ರಾಹಿ protect.

O enhancer of the king's delight, O best of men! rajarsis have decided this way. You may, therefore, O lord, protect your father against hell.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಗಚ್ಛ ಭರತ ಪ್ರಕೃತೀರನುರಞ್ಜಯ.

ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಸಹಿತೋ ವೀರ ಸಹ ಸರ್ವೈರ್ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.107.15৷৷


ವೀರ O valiant one, ಭರತ Bharata, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಸಹಿತಃ with Satrughna, ಸರ್ವೈಃ all, ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿಃ ಸಹ with the twice-born (brahmins), ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಪ್ರಕೃತೀಃ the subjects, ಅನುರಞ್ಜಯ keep them delighted.

O valiant Bharata, go to Ayodhya accompanied by Satrughna and the twice-born (brahmins) and keep the subjects delighted like pleased (with your rule).
ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮಹಮಪ್ಯವಿಲಮ್ಬಯನ್.

ಆಭ್ಯಾನ್ತು ಸಹಿತೋ ರಾಜನ್ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ৷৷2.107.16৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king Bharata, ಅಹಮಪಿ I also, ಅವಿಲಮ್ಬಯನ್ without delay, ಆಭ್ಯಾಮ್ of these two, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ with the princess from Videha (Sita), ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ and Lakshmana, ಸಹಿತಃ in the company of, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ Dandaka forest, ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ shall enter.

O king (Bharata)! I shall also enter the Dandaka forest without delay in the company of only these two -- the princess from Videha (Sita) and Lakshmana.
ತ್ವಂ ರಾಜಾ ಭರತ! ಭವ ಸ್ವಯಂ ನರಾಣಾಂ ವನ್ಯಾನಾಮಹಮಪಿ ರಾಜರಾಣ್ಮೃಗಾಣಾಮ್.

ಗಚ್ಛ ತ್ವಂ ಪುರವರಮದ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಸ್ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಸ್ತ್ವಹಮಪಿ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ৷৷2.107.17৷৷


ಭರತ! O Bharata, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ yourself, ನರಾಣಾಮ್ for men, ರಾಜಾ ಭವ be king, ಅಹಮಪಿ I also, ವನ್ಯಾನಾಮ್ of the wild forest, ಮೃಗಾಣಾಮ್ of the beasts, ರಾಜರಾಟ್ shall become supreme king, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಮ್ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ in delight, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಪುರವರಮ್ to the best of cities, ಗಚ್ಛ go, ಅಹಮಪಿ and I also, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಃ well-pleased, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ in Dandaka forest, ಪ್ರವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯೇ shall enter.

O Bharata, be the king of men. I shall also become the supreme king of the wild beasts in the forest. Go now happily to Ayodhya, the best of cities, and I shall enter Dandaka forest with delight.
ಛಾಯಾಂ ತೇ ದಿನಕರಭಾಃ ಪ್ರಬಾಧಮಾನಾಂ ವರ್ಷತ್ರಂ ಭರತ! ಕರೋತು ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ಶೀತಾಮ್.

ಏತೇಷಾಮಹಮಪಿ ಕಾನನದ್ರುಮಾಣಾಂ ಛಾಯಾಂ ತಾಮತಿಶಯಿನೀಂ ಸುಖೀ ಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ৷৷2.107.18৷৷


ಭರತ O Bharata!, ವರ್ಷತ್ರಮ್ an umbrella, ದಿನಕರಭಾಃ the sunshine, ಪ್ರಬಾಧಮಾನಾಮ್ repelling, ತೇ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ over your head, ಶೀತಾಮ್ cool, ಛಾಯಾಮ್ shade, ಕರೋತು let it provide, ಅಹಮಪಿ I also, ಸುಖೀ one with happiness, ಏತೇಷಾಮ್ these, ಕಾನನದ್ರುಮಾಣಾಮ್ woodland trees, ಅತಿಶಯಿನೀಮ್ dense, ತಾಮ್ in that, ಛಾಯಾಮ್ shade, ಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ shall take refuge.

Let an umbrella protect you against (scorching) sunshine and provide its cool shade over your head, O Bharata! As for me, I shall happily seek the shade of these dense
woodland trees.
ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ ಕುಶಲಮತಿಸ್ತು ತೇ ಸಹಾಯಸ್ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿರ್ಮಮ ವಿದಿತಃ ಪ್ರಧಾನಮಿತ್ರಮ್.

ಚತ್ವಾರಸ್ತನಯವರಾ ವಯಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಂ ಸತ್ಯಸ್ಥಂ ಭರತ ಚರಾಮ ಮಾ ವಿಷೀದ৷৷2.107.19৷৷


ಭರತ Bharata, ಕುಶಲಮತಿಃ intelligent, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನಃ Satrughna, ತೇ to you, ಸಹಾಯಃ assistance, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಃ
son of Sumitra (Lakshmana), ಮಮ for me, ಪ್ರಧಾನಮಿತ್ರಮ್ as my chief friend, ವಿದಿತಃ is well-known, ತನಯವರಾಃ worthy sons, ವಯಮ್ all of us, ಚತ್ವಾರಃ four, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಮ್ to Indra among men (king Dasaratha), ಸತ್ಯಸ್ಥಮ್ as one, established in truth, ಚರಾಮ we shall move, ಮಾ ವಿಷೀದ do not grieve.

O Bharata, intelligent Satrughna will be your support and son of Sumitra (Lakshmana) as is well-known will remain my best friend. All four of us, worthy sons of Dasaratha, shall follow the path of truth of our father.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಸಪ್ತೋತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the one hundredseventh sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
