[Kaikeyi reminds king Dasaratha about the boons--seeks consecration of Bharata as prince-regent and exile of Rama to the forest.]

ತಂ ಮನ್ಮಥಶರೈರ್ವಿದ್ಧಮಂ ಕಾಮವೇಗವಶಾನುಗಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ಪೃಥಿವೀಪಾಲಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀ ದಾರುಣಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.11.1৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯೀ Kaikeyi, ಮನ್ಮಥಶರೈಃ with the darts of Kamadeva, ವಿದ್ಧಮ್ struck, ಕಾಮವೇಗವಶಾನುಗಮ್ overtaken by passion, ತಂ ಪೃಥಿವೀಪಾಲಮ್ to the ruler of earth (Dasaratha), ದಾರುಣಮ್ dreadful, ವಚಃ words, ಉವಾಚ said.

To the ruler of the earth (the king), struck by the darts of Kamadeva and overtaken by passion Kaikeyi spoke (these) dreadful words.
ನಾಸ್ಮಿ ವಿಪ್ರಕೃತಾದೇವ ಕೇನಚಿನ್ನಾವಮಾನಿತಾ.

ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಸ್ತು ಮೇ ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ತಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.11.2৷৷


ದೇವ O king, ಕೇನಚಿತ್ by any one, ವಿಪ್ರಕೃತಾ offended, ನಾಸ್ಮಿ I am not, ನ ಅವಮಾನಿತಾ nor disregarded, ತು but, ಮೇ my, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ certain, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಃ purpose, ತಮ್ that one, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಕೃತಂ ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ you should fulfil.

O king! I have neither been offended nor disregarded by any one, but I have a purpose which you should fulfil.
ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಜಾನೀಷ್ವ ಯದಿ ತ್ವಂ ಕರ್ತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ.

ಅಥ ತದ್ವ್ಯಾಹರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯದಭಿಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿತಂ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.11.3৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to accomplish, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ ಯದಿ if you are inclined, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಜಾನೀಷ್ವ promise to fulfil, ಅಥ thereafter, ಮಯಾ by me, ಯತ್ whatever, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿತಮ್ sought for, ತತ್ that one, ವ್ಯಾಹರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I will tell you.

If you are inclined to accomplish my desire, then promise me that you will fulfil them. Thereafter I shall reveal it to you.
ತಾಮುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮೀಷದುತ್ಸ್ಮಿತಃ.

ಕಾಮೀ ಹಸ್ತೇನ ಸಂಗೃಹ್ಯ ಮೂರ್ಧಜೇಷು ಶುಚಿಸ್ಮಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.11.4৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ mighty, ಕಾಮೀ steeped in passion, ಈಷತ್ a little, ಉತ್ಸ್ಮಿತಃ with a visible smile, ಶುಚಿಸ್ಮಿತಾಮ್ with a pure (bright) smile, ತಾಂ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ to that Kaikeyi, ಮೂರ್ಧಜೇಷು her hair, ಹಸ್ತೇನ with hand, ಸಂಗೃಹ್ಯ holding (gently), ಉವಾಚ said.

The mighty king steeped in passion gently held Kaikeyi's hair in his hands and with a clear, bright smile said:
ಆವಲಿಪ್ತೇ ನ ಜಾನಾಸಿ ತ್ವತ್ತಃ ಪ್ರಿಯತರೋ ಮಮ.

ಮನುಜೋ ಮನುಜವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಾದ್ರಾಮಾದನ್ಯೋ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.11.5৷৷


ಆವಲಿಪ್ತೇ woman swollen with pride, ನ ಜಾನಾಸಿ do you not know?, ಮಮ to me, ತ್ವತ್ತಃ more than you, ಪ್ರಿಯತರಃ dearer, ಮನುಜವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಾತ್ other than the tiger (best) among men, ರಾಮಾತ್ than Rama, ಅನ್ಯಃ other, ಮನುಜಃ man, ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ does not exist.

O proud lady, don't you know there exists for me no woman dearer than you and no man other than Rama who is the best among men.
ತೇನಾಜಯ್ಯೇನ ಮುಖ್ಯೇನ ರಾಘವೇಣ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಶಪೇ ತೇ ಜೀವನಾರ್ಹೇಣ ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಯನ್ಮನಸೇಚ್ಛಾಸಿ৷৷2.11.6৷৷


ಅಜಯ್ಯೇನ invincible one, ಮುಖ್ಯೇನ chief (among men), ಜೀವನಾರ್ಹೇಣ by one worthy to live, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ broad-minded, ತೇನ ರಾಘವೇಣ by that scion among the Raghus (Rama), ಶಪೇ swear, ಮನಸಾ in mind, ಯತ್ which, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ (you) wish, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ tell.

I swear in the name of the scion of the Raghu dynasty, the invincible, broad-minded
Rama, the best among men worthy of long life. Tell me what you have in mind.
ಯಂ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಪಶ್ಯಂಸ್ತು ನ ಜೀವೇಯಮಹಂ ಧ್ರುವಮ್.

ತೇನ ರಾಮೇಣ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಶಪೇ ತೇ ವಚನಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್৷৷2.11.7৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ಯಮ್ whom, ಅಪಶ್ಯನ್ without seeing, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ even for a moment, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ this is certain, ನ ಜೀವೇಯಮ್ cannot live, ತೇನ ರಾಮೇಣ by such Rama, ತೇ your, ವಚನಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ in accordance with your wish, ಶಪೇ I swear.

O Kaikeyi, in the name of Rama without seeing whom I, for sure, cannot live a momment, I swear I will fulfil your desire.
ಆತ್ಮನಾ ವಾತ್ಮಜೈಶ್ಚಾನ್ಯೈರ್ವೃಣೇಯಂ ಮನುಜರ್ಷಭಮ್.

ತೇನ ರಾಮೇಣ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಶಪೇ ತೇ ವಚನಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್৷৷2.11.8৷৷


ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ಆತ್ಮನಾ ವಾ by myself, ಅನ್ಯೈಃ by others, ಆತ್ಮಜೈಶ್ಚ my sons, ಯಮ್ whom, ಮನುಜರ್ಷಭಮ್ best among men, ವೃಣೇ I choose, ತೇನ ರಾಮೇಣ by that Rama, ತೇ your, ವಚನಕ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ to fulfil your wish, ಶಪೇ swear.

O Kaikeyi! I wish the best among men Rama well.Even at the expense of my life or the lives of the rest of my sons I swear in his name I shall fulfil your wish.
ಭದ್ರೇ ಹೃದಯಮಪ್ಯೇತದನುಮೃಶೋದ್ಧರಸ್ವ ಮೇ.

ಏತತ್ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಬ್ರೂಹಿ ಯತ್ಸಾಧು ಮನ್ಯಸೇ৷৷2.11.9৷৷


ಭದ್ರೇ O gentle lady! ಮೇ my, ಏತತ್ this, ಹೃದಯಮ್ heart, ಅನುಮೃಶ್ಯ having touched, ಉದ್ಧರಸ್ವ save,
ಕೈಕೇಯಿ O Kaikeyi, ಏತತ್ this, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ after considering, ಯತ್ which, ಸಾಧು as good, ಮನ್ಯಸೇ you may consider, ಬ್ರೂಹಿ you may tell.

O gentle lady! my heart is sinking. Touch my heart and deliver me from distress. O Kaikeyi considering all this, tell me what you think is good.
ಬಲಮಾತ್ಮನಿ ಜಾನನ್ತೀ ನ ಮಾಂ ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ.

ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತವ ಪ್ರೀತಿಂ ಸುಕೃತೇನಾಪಿ ತೇ ಶಪೇ৷৷2.11.10৷৷


ಆತ್ಮನಿ in yourself, ಬಲಮ್ power, ಜಾನನ್ತೀ you know fully, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಶಙ್ಕಿತುಮ್ to doubt, ನ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ it does not behove you, ಸುಕೃತೇನಾಪಿ on my merits, ತೇ to you, ಶಪೇ I swear, ತವ your, ಪ್ರೀತಿಮ್ pleasure, ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ I shall do.

You know fully the authority you wield over me. Therefore, it does not behove you to doubt me. I swear on my acquired merits that I shall do whatever pleases you.
ಸಾ ತದರ್ಥಮನಾ ದೇವೀ ತಮಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮಾಗತಮ್.

ನಿರ್ಮಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ್ಯಾಚ್ಚ ಹರ್ಷಾಚ್ಚ ಬಭಾಷೇ ದುರ್ವಚಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.11.11৷৷


ತದರ್ಥಮನಾಃ bent upon her interests, ದೇವೀ queeni, ಆಗತಮ್ her mind has set upon, ತಮ್ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮ್ her wish, ನಿರ್ಮಾಧ್ಯಸ್ಥ್ಯಾತ್ with no alternate path, ಹರ್ಷಾತ್ ಚ rejoiced, ದುರ್ವಚಮ್ unutterable, ವಚಃ words, ಬಭಾಷೇ uttered.

Bent upon her interests, the queen cheered and expressed in unutterable words her premeditated wish which had no alternative.
ತೇನ ವಾಕ್ಯೇನ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ತಮಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮಾಗತಮ್.

ವ್ಯಾಜಹಾರ ಮಹಾಘೋರಮಭ್ಯಾಗತಮಿವಾನ್ತಕಮ್৷৷2.11.12৷৷


ತೇನ ವಾಕ್ಯೇನ by those words, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ delighted, ಅಭ್ಯಾಗತಮ್ suddenly struck, ಅನ್ತಕಮಿವ like death, ಮಹಾಘೋರಮ್ highly dreadful, ಆಗತಮ್ that has come to her mind, ತಮ್ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮ್ her wish, ವ್ಯಾಜಹಾರ spoke.

Delighted by the words (of the king), Kaikeyi disclosed him her highly dreadful wish which entered her mind like a sudden visitation of death:
ಯಥಾ ಕ್ರಮೇ ಶಪಸಿ ವರಂ ಮಮ ದದಾಸಿ ಚ.

ತಚ್ಛೃಣ್ವನ್ತು ತ್ರಯಸ್ತ್ರಿಂಶದ್ದೇವಾಸ್ಸಾಗ್ನಿಪುರೋಗಮಾಃ৷৷2.11.13৷৷


ಸಾಗ್ನಿಪುರೋಗಮಾಃ with fire-god in the forefront, ತ್ರಯಸ್ತ್ರಿಂಶದ್ದೇವಾಃ thirtythree (crore) gods, ಕ್ರಮೇಣ successively, ಯಥಾ like, ಶಪಸಿ your are swearing, ಮಮ my, ವರಮ್ boon, ದದಾಸಿ ಚ are giving, ತತ್ that, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ತು listen.

You are repeatedly swearing to grant me boons. Let the thirtythree crore gods headed by the fire-god, listen.
ಚನ್ದ್ರಾದಿತ್ಯೌ ನಭಶ್ಚೈವ ಗ್ರಹಾ ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಹನೀ ದಿಶಃ.

ಜಗಚ್ಚ ಪೃಥಿವೀ ಚೇಯಂ ಸಗನ್ಧರ್ವಾ ಸರಾಕ್ಷಸಾ৷৷2.11.14৷৷

ನಿಶಾಚರಾಣಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಗೃಹೇಷು ಗೃಹದೇವತಾ!.

ಯಾನಿ ಚಾನ್ಯಾನಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಜಾನೀಯುರ್ಭಾಷಿತಂ ತವ৷৷2.11.15৷৷


ಚನ್ದ್ರಾದಿತ್ಯೌ Moon and Sun, ನಭಃ ಚ ಏವ and the sky also, ಗ್ರಹಾಃ the planets, ರಾತ್ರ್ಯಹನೀ night and day, ದಿಶಃ the (ten) quarters, ಜಗಚ್ಚ the world, ಸಗನ್ಧರ್ವಾ with all gandharvas, ಸರಾಕ್ಷಸಾ with all rakshasas, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಪೃಥಿವೀ earth, ನಿಶಾಚರಾಣಿ night-rangers, ಭೂತಾನಿ all beings, ಗೃಹೇಷು in the houses, ಗೃಹದೇವತಾಃ family deities, ಅನ್ಯಾನಿ all other, ಯಾನಿ whosoever, ಭೂತಾನಿ beings, ತವ your, ಭಾಷಿತಮ್ words of promise, ಜಾನೀಯುಃ let them know.

Let the Moon and the Sun, the sky, the planets, night and day, the (ten) quarters the world, gandharvas, rakshasas, this earth, the nocturnal spirits all beings, family deities of every house and all other beings listen to your words of promise.
ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಃ.

ವರಂ ಮಮ ದದಾತ್ಯೇಷ ತನ್ಮೇ ಶ್ರೃಣ್ವನ್ತು ದೈವತಾಃ৷৷2.11.16৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧ: true to his vows, ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ heroic, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knows the ways of righteousness, ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಃ well-composed, ಏಷಃ this (Dasaratha), ಮಮ my, ವರಮ್ boon, ದದಾತಿ is giving, ದೈವತಾಃ gods, ತತ್ that one, ಮೇ for my sake, ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ತು hear.

King Dasaratha who is true to his vows, heroic and knows the ways of righteousness is granting me boons with a well-composed mind. Let all the gods stand witness to this (declared Kaikeyi).
ಇತಿ ದೇವೀ ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸಂ ಪರಿಗೃಹ್ಯಾಭಿಶಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ತತಃ ಪರಮುವಾಚೇದಂ ವರದಂ ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್৷৷2.11.17৷৷


ದೇವೀ queen, ಮಹೇಷ್ವಾಸಮ್ great archer, ಪರಿಗೃಹ್ಯ having seized, ಅಭಿಶಸ್ಯ ಚ having flattered, ತತಃ ಪರಮ್ ಚ afterwards, ವರದಮ್ conferer of boons, ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್ infatuated, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಉವಾಚ said.

Clasping the great archer, the infatuated king, conferer of boons and flattering him (to the top of her bent), the queen said:
ಸ್ಮರ ರಾಜನ್ ಪುರಾವೃತ್ತಂ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ರಣೇ.

ತತ್ರ ಚಾಚ್ಯಾವಯಚ್ಛತ್ರುಸ್ತವ ಜೀವಿತಮನ್ತರಾ৷৷2.11.18৷৷


ರಾಜನ್ O king, ಪುರಾ long ago, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ that, ದೈವಾಸುರೇ between gods and asuras, ರಣೇ in the war, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ event, ಸ್ಮರ recollect, ತತ್ರ there, ಶತ್ರು: ಚ enemy too, ತವ your, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ ಅನ್ತರಾ except your life, ಅಚ್ಯಾವಯತ್ pulled down.

O king, recall the event that happened long ago in the war between gods and asuras where the enemy destroyed all your forces except your life.
ತತ್ರ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಯಾ ದೇವ ಯತ್ತ್ವಂ ಸಮಭಿರಕ್ಷಿತಃ.

ಜಾಗ್ರತ್ಯಾ ಯತಮಾನಾಯಾಸ್ತತೋ ಮೇ ಪ್ರಾದದಾ ವರೌ৷৷2.11.19৷৷


ದೇವ O king! ತತ್ರ ಚ there too, ಯತ್ since, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಯಾ by me, ಸಮಭಿರಕ್ಷಿತಃ were rescued, ತತಃ for that reason, ಜಾಗ್ರತ್ಯಾಃ fully alert, ಯತಮಾನಾಯಾಃ making efforts to protect you, ಮೇ to me, ವರೌ two boons, ಪ್ರಾದದಾಃ you conferred.

O king, I rescued you there. Since I was alert to protect you, you granted me two
boons.
ತೌ ತು ದತ್ತೌ ವರೌ ದೇವ ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪೌ ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ಯಹಮ್.

ತಥೈವ ಪೃಥಿವೀಪಾಲ ಸಕಾಶೇ ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರ৷৷2.11.20৷৷


ಪೃಥಿವೀಪಾಲ O protector of the earth, ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರ one who is honest in keeping promises, ದೇವ O king! ತವ your, ಸಕಾಶೇ ಏವ with, ನಿಕ್ಷೇಪೌ preserved as deposit (to be given in course of time), ತೌ those, ದತ್ತೌ given, ವರೌ ತು boons, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಮೃಗಯಾಮಿ seeking.

O protector of the earth, O king, honest in keeping promises, I (now) seek those two boons which were reserved as deposits.
ತತ್ ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ನ ಚೇದ್ದಾಸ್ಯಸಿ ಮೇ ವರಮ್.

ಅದ್ಯೈವ ಹಿ ಪ್ರಹಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಜೀವಿತಂ ತ್ವದ್ವಿಮಾನಿತಾ৷৷2.11.21৷৷


ತತ್ that, ಪ್ರತಿಶ್ರುತ್ಯ having vowed, ಮೇ my, ವರಮ್ boon, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ rightfully, ನ ದಾಸ್ಯಸಿ ಚೇತ್ if you do not grant, ತ್ವದ್ವಿಮಾನಿತಾ disgraced by you, ಅದ್ಯೈವ right away, ಜೀವಿತಮ್ life, ಪ್ರಹಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಹಿ shall give up.

The boons you have vowed to give shall rightfully be given to me. If not, disgraced by you I shall give up my life right away.
ವಾಙ್ಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ತದಾ ರಾಜಾ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸ್ವವಶೇ ಕೃತಃ.

ಪ್ರಚಸ್ಕನ್ದ ವಿನಾಶಾಯ ಪಾಶಂ ಮೃಗ ಇವಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.11.22৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ವಾಙ್ಮಾತ್ರೇಣ with words only, ಸ್ವವಶೇ under the control, ಕೃತಃ
caught, ರಾಜಾ ಚ king also, ಮೃಗಃ ಇವ like a deer, ಆತ್ಮನಃ for his own, ವಿನಾಶಾಯ for destruction, ಪಾಶಮ್ trap, ಪ್ರಚಸ್ಕನ್ದ jumped into.

The king now came under the control of Kaikeyi by his own words like a deer that jumps into the trap for its own destruction.
ತತಃ ಪರಮುವಾಚೇದಂ ವರದಂ ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್.

ವರೌ ಯೌ ಮೇ ತ್ವಯಾ ದೇವ! ತದಾ ದತ್ತೌ ಮಹೀಪತೇ৷৷2.11.23৷৷

ತೌ ತಾವದಹಮದ್ಯೈವ ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಶೃಣು ಮೇ ವಚಃ.


ತತಃ ಪರಮ್ thereafter, ಕಾಮಮೋಹಿತಮ್ overcome by passion, ವರದಮ್ conferer of boons, ಇದಮ್ this word, ಉವಾಚ said, ಮಹೀಪತೇ O lord of earth, ದೇವ my lord, ತದಾ then, ಮೇ to me, ತ್ವಯಾ by yourself, ಯೌ ವರೌ those two boons, ದತ್ತೌ were given, ತೌ about them, ಅದ್ಯೈವ ತಾವತ್ right now, ವಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall speak out , ಮೇ ವಚಃ my words, ಶೃಣು listen.

Thereafter, she said to the infatuated king who had promised to confer her boons, O lord of the earth, O king, right now I shall speak to you about the two boons granted by you. Listen to my words.
ಅಭಿಷೇಕಸಮಾರಮ್ಭೋ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯೋಪಕಲ್ಪಿತಃ৷৷2.11.24৷৷

ಅನೇನೈವಾಭಿಷೇಕೇಣ ಭರತೋ ಮೇಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯತಾಮ್.


ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಸಮಾರಮ್ಭಃ preparations for consecration, ಉಪಕಲ್ಪಿತಃ have been made, ಅನೇನ ಅಭಿಷೇಕೇಣೈವ with these materials for installation, ಮೇ my, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಭಿಷಿಚ್ಯತಾಮ್ shall be crowned.

Preparations for Rama's consecration have been made. With these very materials for installation, my son Bharata should be consecrated.
ಯೋ ದ್ವಿತೀಯೋ ವರೋ ದೇವ ದತ್ತಃ ಪ್ರೀತೇನ ಮೇ ತ್ವಯಾ৷৷2.11.25৷৷

ತದಾ ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ಯುದ್ಧೇ ತಸ್ಯ ಕಾಲೋಯಮಾಗತ.


ತದಾ then, ದೈವಾಸುರೇ ಯುದ್ಧೇ in the war between gods and asuras, ಪ್ರೀತೇನ pleased, ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ದೇವ Lord! ಮೇ to me, ಯಃ which, ದ್ವಿತೀಯ: second, ವರಃ boon, ದತ್ತಃ was given, ತಸ್ಯ for that, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಕಾಲಃ time, ಆಗತಃ has come.

Then in the war between gods and asuras, O lord!, pleased with me you have

ನವ ಪ್ಚ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ৷৷2.11.26৷৷

ಚೀರಾಜಿನಜಟಾಧಾರೀ ರಾಮೋ ಭವತು ತಾಪಸಃ.


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ನವ ಪಞ್ಚ ಚ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ for fourteen (nine and five) years, ದಣ್ಡಕಾರಣ್ಯಮ್ Dandaka forest, ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ resorted to, ಚೀರಾಜಿನಜಟಾಧಾರೀ clad in tattered (bark) and deer skin and wearing matted locks, ತಾಪಸಃ like an ascetic, ಭವತು shall remain (in the forest.)

Consigned to the Dandaka forest for fourteen years, clad in bark and deer skin and wearing matted hair, Rama shall live like an ascetic.
ಭರತೋ ಭಜತಾಮದ್ಯ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಮಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್৷৷2.11.27৷৷

ಏಷ ಮೇ ಪರಮಃ ಕಾಮೋ ದತ್ತಮೇವ ವರಂ ವೃಣೇ.

ಅದ್ಯ ಚೈವ ಹಿ ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಂ ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಂ ರಾಘವಂ ವನಮ್৷৷2.11.28৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ now, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಅಕಣ್ಟಕಮ್ without any thorns(rivals), ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ as prince-regent, ಭಜತಾಮ್ let him enjoy, ಏಷಃ this, ಮೇ my, ಪರಮಃ great, ಕಾಮಃ desire, ದತ್ತಂ ವರಮೇವ already granted boon, ವೃಣೇ I am asking for, ಅದ್ಯ ಚೈವ now itself, ವನಮ್ to the forest, ಪ್ರಯಾನ್ತಂ departing to the forest, ರಾಘವಮ್ to the scion of the Raghus (Rama), ಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ I shall see.

Let Bharata be prince-regent without any rivals. This is my great desire. I am asking for an already granted boon. Let me see Rama's departure to the forest today itself.
ಸ ರಾಜರಾಜಃ ಭವ ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರಃ

ಕುಲಂ ಚ ಶೀಲಂ ಚ ಹಿ ರಕ್ಷ ಜನ್ಮ ಚ.

ಪರತ್ರವಾಸೇ ಹಿ ವದನ್ತ್ಯನುತ್ತಮಂ

ತಪೋಧನಾಸ್ಸತ್ಯವಚೋ ಹಿತಂ ನೃಣಾಮ್৷৷2.11.29৷৷


ರಾಜರಾಜಃ king of kings, ಸಃ you are such, ಸತ್ಯಸಙ್ಗರಃ ಭವ be true to your vows, ಕುಲಂ ಚ your race , ಶೀಲಂ ಚ character, ಜನ್ಮ ಚ birth, ರಕ್ಷ ಹಿ protect, ನೃಣಾಮ್ for men, ಪರತ್ರ in the other world, ವಾಸೇ for existence, ಸತ್ಯವಚಃ merits of truth, ಅನುತ್ತಮಮ್ no superior, ಹಿತಮ್ welfare, ತಪೋಧನಾಃ those having ascetism as wealth, sages, ವದನ್ತಿ ಹಿ are saying.

O king of kings, by being true to your vow, protect your race, character and lineage. Those sages whose ascetism is their wealth maintain that there is no merit superior to truthfulness which can confer man a place in the other world.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕಾದಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the eleventh sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
