[Vasistha explains the value of conforming to righteousness --- pleads with Rama to grant the wishes of Bharata and respect his request --- Rama declines.]

ವಸಿಷ್ಠಸ್ತು ತದಾ ರಾಮಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ರಾಜಪುರೋಹಿತಃ.

ಅಬ್ರವೀದ್ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪುನರೇವಾಪರಂ ವಚಃ৷৷2.111.1৷৷


ರಾಜಪುರೋಹಿತಃ royal priest, ವಸಿಷ್ಟಸ್ತು Vasistha on his part, ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ spoke further, ಪುನರೇವ again, ಧರ್ಮಸಂಯುಕ್ತಮ್ on righteousness, ಅಪರಂ ವಚಃ some otherword, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Vasistha, the family priest, continued to speak to Rama on righteousness.
ಪುರುಷಸ್ಯೇಹ ಜಾತಸ್ಯ ಭವನ್ತಿ ಗುರವಸ್ತ್ರಯಃ.

ಆಚಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚೈವ ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ ಪಿತಾ ಮಾತಾ ಚ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.111.2৷৷


ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥ O Kakutstha, ರಾಘವ Rama, ಜಾತಸ್ಯ of one who is born, ಪುರುಷಸ್ಯ for a person, ಆಚಾರ್ಯಶ್ಚೈವ the preceptor, ಪಿತಾ the father, ಮಾತಾ ಚ the mother, ತ್ರಯಃ three, ಗುರವಃ ಭವನ್ತಿ become gurus.

Every man born has three preceptors. They are his teacher, father and mother.
ಪಿತಾ ಹ್ಯೇವಂ ಜನಯತಿ ಪುರುಷಂ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ.

ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಂ ದದಾತಿ ಚಾಚಾರ್ಯಸ್ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಸ ಗುರುರುಚ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.111.3৷৷


ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭ O best of men!, ಏವಂ ಪುರುಷಮ್ in such a way a man, ಪಿತಾ father, ಜನಯತಿ ಹಿ begets, ಆಚಾರ್ಯಃ teacher, ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಮ್ wisdom, ದದಾತಿ gives, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಸಃ that (teacher), ಗುರುಃ become guru, ಉಚ್ಯತೇ is called.

O best of men, the father brings forth a son. The teacher imparts him wisdom.
Therefore, the teacher is considered superior.
ಸೋಹಂ ತೇ ಪಿತುರಾಚಾರ್ಯಸ್ತವ ಚೈವ ಪರನ್ತಪ.

ಮಮ ತ್ವಂ ವಚನಂ ಕುರ್ವನ್ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್৷৷2.111.4৷৷


ಸಃ ಅಹಮ್ that I, ತೇ ಪಿತುಃ of your father, ತವ ಚೈವ and also your, ಆಚಾರ್ಯಃ preceptor, ಪರನ್ತಪ O destroyer of foes!, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಮ my, ವಚನಮ್ order, ಕುರ್ವನ್ carrying out, ಸತಾಮ್ of virtuous men's, ಗತಿಮ್ path, ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಃ you will not transgress.

I was preceptor to your father and also to you. O destroyer of foes, by following my words, you will not transgress the path of the virtuous.
ಇಮಾ ಹಿ ತೇ ಪರಿಷದ ಶ್ಶ್ರೇಣಯಶ್ಚ ದ್ವಿಜಾಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಏಷು ತಾತ ಚರನ್ಧರ್ಮಂ ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇ ಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್৷৷2.111.5৷৷


ತಾತ my child, ಇಮಾಃ these, ಪರಿಷದಃ assembly of men, ಶ್ರೇಣಯಶ್ಚ guilds of merchants and others, ತಥಾ also, ದ್ವಿಜಾಃ the twice-born, ತೇ ಹಿ are yours, ಏಷು towards them, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ duty, ಚರನ್ while practising, ಸತಾಮ್ of the virtuous, ಗತಿಮ್ path, ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಃ you will never swerve.

All these learned men, guilds of merchants and the twice-born (brahmins) of this assembly are your men. By fulfilling your duty towards them, you will never swerve
from the path of the virtuous.
ವೃದ್ಧಾಯಾ ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾಯಾ ಮಾತುರ್ನಾರ್ಹಸ್ಯವರ್ತಿತುಮ್.

ಅಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತು ವಚನಂ ಕುರ್ವನ್ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಸ್ಸತಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್৷৷2.111.6৷৷


ವೃದ್ಧಾಯಾಃ of an aged woman, ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲಾಯಾಃ of a righteous-minded woman, ಮಾತುಃ of the mother, ಅವರ್ತಿತುಮ್ not to attend her, ನಾರ್ಹಸಿ is not proper, ಅಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಕುರ್ವನ್ obeying, ಸತಾಮ್ of the virtuous, ಗತಿಮ್ path, ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಃ you will not deviate.

Here is your aged and righteous mother. It does not behove you to deny your service to her. By obeying her, you will never deviate from the path of the virtuous.
ಭರತಸ್ಯ ವಚಃ ಕುರ್ವನ್ಯಾಚಮಾನಸ್ಯ ರಾಘವ!.

ಆತ್ಮಾನಂ ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಪರಾಕ್ರಮ!৷৷2.111.7৷৷


ಸತ್ಯಧರ್ಮಪರಾಕ್ರಮ! one whose strength comes from truth and righteousness, ರಾಘವ! Rama, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯಾಚಮಾನಸ್ಯ of the supplicant, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ವಚಃ words, ಕುರ್ವನ್ by following, ಆತ್ಮಾನಮ್ call of your soul, ನಾತಿವರ್ತೇಃ will not ignore.

O scion of the Raghus whose strength springs from truth and righteousness, if you accede to the prayers of Bharata, you will not ignore the call of your soul.
ಏವಂ ಮಧುರಮುಕ್ತಸ್ಸನ್ ಗುರುಣಾ ರಾಘವಸ್ಸ್ವಯಮ್.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಸಮಾಸೀನಂ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ৷৷2.111.8৷৷


ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಃ the best of men, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಗುರುಣಾ by the preceptor, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ personally, ಏವಮ್ in that way, ಮಧುರಮ್ with sweet words, ಉಕ್ತಸ್ಸನ್ by having been addressed, ಸಮಾಸೀನಮ್ who was sitting beside, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮ್ to Vasistha, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

When Rama, the best of men, was advised personally by Vasistha, the preceptor, with sweet words, he replied to him who was sitting beside him:
ಯನ್ಮಾತಾಪಿತರೌ ವೃತ್ತಂ ತನಯೇ ಕುರುತಸ್ಸದಾ.

ನ ಸುಪ್ರತಿಕರಂ ತತ್ತು ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ ಯತ್ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.111.9৷৷

ಯಥಾಶಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರದಾನೇನ ಸ್ವಾಪನೋಚ್ಛಾದನೇನ ಚ.

ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಚ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೇನ ತಥಾ ಸಂವರ್ಧನೇನ ಚ৷৷2.111.10৷৷


ಮಾತಾಪಿತರೌ parents, ತನಯೇ in relation to son, ಸದಾ always, ಯತ್ what, ವೃತ್ತಮ್ course of action, ಕುರುತಃ perform, ಯಥಾಶಕ್ತಿಪ್ರದಾನೇನ by conferring benefits according to their resources, ಸ್ವಾಪನೋಚ್ಛಾದನೇನ ಚ by lulling him to sleep, clothing him, ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಚ always, ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದೇನ with affectionate words, ತಥಾ similarly, ಸಂವರ್ಧನೇನ ಚ bringing him up, ಮಾತ್ರಾ by mother, ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಚ and
by father, ಯತ್ what, ಕೃತಮ್ was done, ತತ್ತು all that, ನ ಸುಪ್ರತಿಕರಮ್ cannot easily be repaid.

The course of action the parents always adopt in respect of their son, the benefits they confer on him according to their resources, the way they lull him to sleep and clothe him, the affectionate words they always speak to him and the way they bring him up all these cannot be repaid.
ಸ ಹಿ ರಾಜಾ ಜನಯಿತಾ ಪಿತಾ ದಶರಥೋ ಮಮ.

ಆಜ್ಞಾತಂ ಯನ್ಮಯಾ ತಸ್ಯ ನ ತನ್ಮಿಥ್ಯಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.111.11৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಪಿತಾ father, ಸಃ that, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಜನಯಿತಾ ಹಿ he begot me, ಮಯಾ by me, ತಸ್ಯ to him, ಯತ್ whatever, ಆಜ್ಞಾತಂ was promised, ತತ್ that one, ಮಿಥ್ಯಾ false, ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ shall not become.

King Dasaratha is my father who begot me. The promise I made him shall not prove false.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ರಾಮೇಣ ಭರತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯನನ್ತರಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ಪರಮೋದಾರಸ್ಸೂತಂ ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ৷৷2.111.12৷৷


ಪರಮೋದಾರಃ a man of great generosity, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ
having been addressed, ಪರಮದುರ್ಮನಾಃ with extremely distressed mind, ಪ್ರತ್ಯನನ್ತರಂ who was nearby, ಸೂತಮ್ to the charioteer, ಉವಾಚ said.

Having been addressed by Rama in this way, Bharata of great generosity, in extreme distress, addressing the charioteer who was standing nearby said:
ಇಹ ಮೇ ಸ್ಥಣ್ಡಿಲೇ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ಕುಶಾನಾಸ್ತರ ಸಾರಥೇ.

ಆರ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಯಾವನ್ಮೇ ನ ಪ್ರಸೀದತಿ৷৷2.111.13৷৷


ಸಾರಥೇ O charioteer, ಮೇ to me, ಇಹ here, ಸ್ಥಣ್ಡಿಲೇ on the bare ground, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಕುಶಾನ್ kusa grass, ಆಸ್ತರ spread, ಯಾವತ್ till such time, ಮೇ to me, ನ ಪ್ರಸೀದತಿ does not show his
grace, ಆರ್ಯಮ್ esteemed brother Rama, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall lie down here waiting for him.

O charioteer, quickly spread kusa grass on the bare ground. Until my esteemed brother shows his grace, I shall lie down here -- waiting.
ಅನಾಹಾರೋ ನಿರಾಲೋಕೋ ಧನಹೀನೋ ಯಥಾ ದ್ವಿಜಃ.

ಶೇಷ್ಯೇ ಪುರಸ್ತಾಚ್ಛಾಲಾಯಾ ಯಾವನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.111.14৷৷


ಧನಹೀನ: poor, ದ್ವಿಜಃ ಯಥಾ like a brahmin, ಅನಾಹಾರಃ starve, ನಿರಾಲೋಕಃ without seeing the light (of the day), ಶಾಲಾಯಾಃ of the hut, ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ in front of, ಯಾವತ್ till such time, ನ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಸ್ಯತಿ does not return, ಶೇಷ್ಯೇ I shall lie down.

Like a poor brahmin, starving, my face muffled, I shall lie down in front of the hut until he agrees to return.
ಸ ತು ರಾಮಮವೇಕ್ಷನ್ತಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಂ ಪೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ.

ಕುಶೋತ್ತರಮುಪಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ ಭೂಮಾವೇವಾಸ್ತರತ್ಸ್ವಯಮ್৷৷2.111.15৷৷


ದುರ್ಮನಾಃ of troubled mind, ಸ ತು that Bharata, ರಾಮಮ್ at Rama, ಅವೇಕ್ಷನ್ತಮ್ glancing at, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ seeing, ಸ್ವಯಮೇವ himself, ಕುಶೋತ್ತರಮ್ of kusa grass, ಉಪಸ್ಥಾಪ್ಯ having brought, ಭೂಮೌ on the ground, ಆಸ್ತರತ್ spread.

Bharata was mentally disturbed saw Sumantra waiting for Rama's order. Then he himself brought a heap of kusa grass and spread it on the ground.
ತಮುವಾಚ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ರಾಮೋ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ.

ಕಿಂ ಮಾಂ ಭರತ ಕುರ್ವಾಣಂ ತಾತ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.111.16৷৷


ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ highly powerful, ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ the foremost of royal sages, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಮ್ to him (Bharata), ಉವಾಚ said, ತಾತಃ O dear one, ಭರತ Bharata, ಕಿಂ ಕುರ್ವಾಣಮ್ what have I done, ಮಾಮ್ before me, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಸಿ preventing me by lying down?

Rama, the foremost of royal sages and highly powerful said, 'Dear Bharata, what wrong have I done that you should prevent me by lying down in front of me?'
ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣೋ ಹ್ಯೇಕಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇನ ನರಾನ್ರೋದ್ಧುಮಿಹಾರ್ಹತಿ.

ನ ತು ಮೂರ್ಧಾಭಿಷಿಕ್ತಾನಾಂ ವಿಧಿಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಶನೇ৷৷2.111.17৷৷


ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಃ brahmin, ಏಕಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇನ (lying down) on one side, ನರಾನ್ to men, ಇಹ in this world, ರೋದ್ಧುಮ್ to prevent, ಅರ್ಹತಿ ಹಿ is competent, ಮೂರ್ಧಾಭಿಷಿಕ್ತಾನಾಂ ತು for one who is anointed king, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪವೇಶನೇ to sit in protest, ವಿಧಿಃ ನ there is no tradition.

A brahmin alone is competent in this world to prevent a person by lying down on one side (in front of him). One who is anointed king is not permitted by (scriptural) tradition to squat in protest.
ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ಹಿತ್ವೈತದ್ದಾರುಣಂ ವ್ರತಮ್.

ಪುರವರ್ಯಾಮಿತಃ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಯಾಹಿ ರಾಘವ৷৷2.111.18৷৷


ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ O best of men, ರಾಘವ Bharata, ಏತತ್ all this, ದಾರುಣಮ್ formidable, ವ್ರತಮ್ resolve, ಹಿತ್ವಾ
give up, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, ಇತಃ from here, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಪುರವರ್ಯಾಮ್ to the best of cities, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಯಾಹಿ you may return.

O Bharata, O tiger among men, O scion of the Raghu race! give up this formidable vow. Arise and quickly return to Ayodhya, the best of cities.
ಆಸೀನಸ್ತ್ವೇವ ಭರತಃ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಂ ಜನಮ್.

ಉವಾಚ ಸರ್ವತಃ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಿಮಾರ್ಯಂ ನಾನುಶಾಸಥ৷৷2.111.19৷৷


ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಆಸೀನಸ್ತ್ವೇವ while remaining seated, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಮ್ men inhabiting towns and villages, ಜನಮ್ men, ಸರ್ವತಃ on all sides, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ looking, ಆರ್ಯಮ್ esteemed brother, ಕಿಮ್ why, ನಾನುಶಾಸಥ don't you all persuade, ಉವಾಚ said.

While remaining seated, Bharata looking all around at the inhabitants from towns and
villages, questioned them 'why don't you all persuade my esteemed brother to return'.
ತೇ ತಮೂಚುರ್ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಾ ಜನಾಃ.

ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮಭಿಜಾನೀಯಸ್ಸಮ್ಯಗ್ವದತಿ ರಾಘವಃ৷৷2.111.20৷৷


ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಾಃ inhabiting in towns and villages, ತೇ ಜನಾಃ those people, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ magnanimous, ತಮ್ to Bharata, ಊಚುಃ uttered, ಕಾಕುತ್ಸ್ಥಮ್ about Kakustha (Rama), ಅಭಿಜಾನೀಯಃ we know very well, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ properly, ವದತಿ says.

Those inhabitants from towns and villages replied to the magnanimous Bharata 'we know the scion of the Kakutha dynasty, Rama, very well. What he has said is proper'.
ಏಷೋಪಿ ಹಿ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಃ ಪಿತುರ್ವಚಸಿ ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ.

ಅತ ಏವ ನ ಶಕ್ತಾಃ ಸ್ಮೋ ವ್ಯಾವರ್ತಯಿತುಮಞ್ಜಸಾ৷৷2.111.21৷৷


ಏಷಃ this, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಃ highly distinguished Rama, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವಚಸಿ word, ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ ಹಿ is fixed, ಅತ ಏವ that is why, ಅಞ್ಜಸಾ quickly, ವ್ಯಾವರ್ತಯಿತುಮ್ to make him return, ಶಕ್ತಾಃ capable, ನ ಸ್ಮಃ not.

Highly distinguished Rama is firmly fixed on the command of his father. That is why we are incapable of making him return quickly.
ತೇಷಾಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ವಚನಂ ರಾಮೋ ವಚನಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಏವಂ ನಿಬೋಧ ವಚನಂ ಸುಹೃದಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಚಕ್ಷುಷಾಮ್৷৷2.111.22৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having understood, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಧರ್ಮಚಕ್ಷುಷಾಮ್ through righteous vision, ಸುಹೃದಾಮ್ friends, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ವಚನಮ್ words, ನಿಬೋಧ understand.

Having understood their words, Rama said to him, 'Listen to the words of our friends who have a righteous vision.'
ಏತಚ್ಚೈವೋಭಯಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ಸಮ್ಪಶ್ಯ ರಾಘವ.

ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ತ್ವಂ ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ ಮಾಂ ಚ ಸ್ಪೃಶ ತಥೋದಕಮ್৷৷2.111.23৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಾಹೋ O mighty-armed one!, ರಾಘವ Bharata, ಏತತ್ all this, ಉಭಯಂ ಚೈವ both, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ carefully, ಸಮ್ಪಶ್ಯ having thought over, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ arise, ಮಾಂ ಚ me, ತಥಾ as also, ಉದಕಮ್ water, ಸ್ಪೃಶ touch.

O mighty-armed son of the Raghus, you have heard both (them and me). Carefully think over. Arise. Touch me and sip water.
ಅಥೋತ್ಥಾಯ ಜಲಂಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಭರತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಶ್ರುಣ್ವನ್ತು ಮೇ ಪರಿಷದೋ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣ ಶ್ಶ್ರೇಣಯಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.111.24৷৷


ಅಥ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಉತ್ಥಾಯ having stood up, ಜಲಮ್ water, ಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having touched, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಪರಿಷದಃ O men of the assembly, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ O counsellors, ತಥಾ also, ಶ್ರೇಣಯಃ O guildsmen, ಮೇ me, ಶ್ರುಣ್ವನ್ತು listen.

Then Bharata stood up and performed achamana (sipping of water) and said 'let the
assembly of learned men, counsellors and guildsmen hear me'.
ನ ಯಾಚೇ ಪಿತರಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ನಾನುಶಾಸಾಮಿ ಮಾತರಮ್.

ಆರ್ಯಂ ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಂ ನಾನುಜಾನಾಮಿ ರಾಘವಮ್৷৷2.111.25৷৷


ಪಿತರಮ್ my father, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ನ ಯಾಚೇ did not ask, ಮಾತರಮ್ mother, ನಾನುಶಾಸಾಮಿ did not urge, ಪರಮಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಮ್ supremely knowleldgeable in ways of righteousness, ಆರ್ಯಮ್ esteemed, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ನಾನುಜಾನಾಮಿ I did not consent.

I never asked my father to confer the kingdom on me. I never urged my mother to seek the kingdom for me. I never supported the exile of my esteemed brother Rama, who is supreme in the knowleldge of righteousness.
ಯದಿತ್ವವಶ್ಯಂ ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಚ ಪಿತುರ್ವಚಃ.

ಅಹಮೇವ ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಸಮಾ ವನೇ৷৷2.111.26৷৷


ಅವಶ್ಯಮ್ absolutely, ವಸ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಯದಿ if it is essential to live in the forest, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವಚಃ words, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಂ ಚ must be done, ಅಹಮೇವ I myself, ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಸಮಾಃ fourteen years, ವನೇ in the forest, ನಿವತ್ಸ್ಯಾಮಿ I will reside.

If it is absolutely essential to live in the forest in accordance with the command of my father, I myself shall also dwell in the forest for fourteen years.
ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ತಸ್ಯ ತಥ್ಯೇನ ಭ್ರಾತುರ್ವಾಕ್ಯೇನ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಃ.

ಉವಾಚ ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಂ ಜನಮ್৷৷2.111.27৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಸ್ಯ his, ಭ್ರಾತುಃ brother's, ತಥ್ಯೇನ genuine, ವಾಕ್ಯೇನ with words, ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಃ was astonished, ಪೌರಜಾನಪದಮ್ inhabiting the towns and villages, ಜನಮ್ people, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ seeing, ಉವಾಚ said.

On hearing the genuine sentiments of his brother, righteous Rama was astonished. He said to the inhabitants from towns and villages:
ವಿಕ್ರೀತಮಾಹಿತಂ ಕ್ರೀತಂ ಯತ್ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಜೀವತಾ ಮಮ.

ನ ತಲ್ಲೋಪಯಿತುಂ ಶಕ್ಯಂ ಮಯಾ ವಾ ಭರತೇನ ವಾ৷৷2.111.28৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಜೀವತಾ while living, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಯತ್ what, ವಿಕ್ರೀತಮ್ was sold, ಆಹಿತಮ್ pledged, ಕ್ರೀತಮ್ bought, ತತ್ that, ಲೋಪಯಿತುಂ to annul, ಮಯಾ ವಾ by me or, ಭರತೇನ ವಾ or Bharata, ನ ಶಕ್ಯಮ್ not possible.

Neither Bharata nor I can in any way annul anything which was sold, pledged or bought by my father during his lifetime.
ಉಪಧಿರ್ನ ಮಯಾ ಕಾರ್ಯೋ ವನವಾಸೇ ಜುಗುಪ್ಸಿತಃ.

ಯುಕ್ತಮುಕ್ತಂ ಚ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಮೇ ಸುಕೃತಂ ಕೃತಮ್৷৷2.111.29৷৷


ಮಯಾ by me, ವನವಾಸೇ in the matter of living in the forest, ಜುಗುಪ್ಸಿತಃ reprehensible, ಉಪಧಿಃ placing a substitute, ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಃ shall not be done, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ rightly, ಉಕ್ತಮ್ spoken, ಮೇ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಸುಕೃತಮ್ good deed, ಕೃತಮ್ has been done.

As far as living in the forest is concerned it is reprehensible to keep a subsitute for me and it shall not be done. Kaikeyi has acted rightfully and my father has taken the proper decision.
ಜಾನಾಮಿ ಭರತಂ ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತಂ ಗುರುಸತ್ಕಾರಕಾರಿಣಮ್.

ಸರ್ವಮೇವಾತ್ರ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಂ ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೇ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಿ৷৷2.111.30৷৷


ಭರತಮ್ Bharata, ಕ್ಷಾನ್ತಮ್ a man of forbearance, ಗುರುಸತ್ಕಾರಕಾರಿಣಮ್ honours elders, ಜಾನಾಮಿ I know, ಸತ್ಯಸನ್ಧೇ true to his word, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಿ great, ಅತ್ರ for him, ಸರ್ವಮೇವ everything, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಮ್ will be auspicious.

I know Bharata as a man of forbearance and one who honours elders. Everything will turn out well for this great soul wedded to truth.
ಅನೇನ ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲೇನ ವನಾತ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತಃ ಪುನಃ.

ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಃ ಪತಿರುತ್ತಮಃ৷৷2.111.31৷৷


ವನಾತ್ from the forest, ಪುನಃ again, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಗತಃ when returned, ಧರ್ಮಶೀಲೇನ of virtuous conduct, ಅನೇನ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ along with this brother, ಪೃಥಿವ್ಯಾಃ of the earth, ಉತ್ತಮಃ supreme, ಪತಿಃ lord, ಭವಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall become.

On returning from the forest, I shall become the supreme lord of this earth along with this virtuous brother.
ವೃತೋ ಹಿ ರಾಜಾ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಮಯಾ ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಕೃತಮ್.

ಅನೃತಾನ್ಮೋಚಯಾನೇನ ಪಿತರಂ ತಂ ಮಹೀಪತಿಮ್৷৷2.111.32৷৷


ರಾಜಾ the king (Dasaratha), ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ವೃತೋ ಹಿ has been solicited, ಮಯಾ by me, ತದ್ವಚನಂ those words, ಕೃತಮ್ are followed, ಅನೇನ for that reason, ಮಹೀಪತಿಮ್ the lord of the earth, ತಂ ಪಿತರಮ್ that father, ಅನೃತಾತ್ from falsehood, ಮೋಚಯ you may release.

The king (Dasaratha) was solicited by Kaikeyi and I shall abide. Therefore, you also release the lord of the earth, our father from the charge of falsehood.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಏಕಾದಶೋತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the hundredeleventh sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
