[Return of Bharata and Satrughna with Rama's sandals as the representative of Rama.]

ತತ ಶ್ಶಿರಸಿ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ತು ಪಾದುಕೇ ಭರತಸ್ತದಾ.

ಆರುರೋಹ ರಥಂ ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ ಸಮನ್ವಿತಃ৷৷2.113.1৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ತದಾ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪಾದುಕೇ sandals, ಶಿರಸಿ upon his head, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having placed, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ in delight, ಶತ್ರುಘ್ನೇನ with Satrughna, ಸಮನ್ವಿತಃ accompanied by, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಆರುರೋಹ boarded.

Then Bharata accompanied by Satrughna, placing the sandals on his head in delight, boarded the chariot.
ವಸಿಷ್ಠೋ ವಾಮದೇವಶ್ಚ ಜಾಬಾಲಿಶ್ಚ ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ.

ಅಗ್ರತಃ ಪ್ರಯಯು ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣೋ ಮನ್ತ್ರಪೂಜಿತಾಃ৷৷2.113.2৷৷


ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ವಾಮದೇವಶ್ಚ Vamadeva, ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ of rigid penance, ಜಾಬಾಲಿಶ್ಚ Jabali, ಮನ್ತ್ರಪೂಜಿತಾಃ honoured for their counselling, ಸರ್ವೇ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಣಃ all the ministers, ಅಗ್ರತಃ in the forefront, ಪ್ರಯಯುಃ proceeded.

Vasishta, Vamadeva, Jabali of rigorous penance and all the ministers honoured for their counsel proceeded ahead.
ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಂ ನದೀಂ ರಮ್ಯಾಂ ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖಾಸ್ತೇ ಯಯುಸ್ತದಾ.

ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಚ ಕುರ್ವಾಣಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಂ ಮಹಾಗಿರಿಮ್৷৷2.113.3৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತೇ they, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಂ ಮಹಾಗಿರಿಮ್ mighty mountain, Chitrakuta, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ circumambulation, ಕುರ್ವಾಣಾಃ doings, ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖಾಃ facing eastward, ಮನ್ದಾಕಿನೀಮ್ river Mandakini, ರಮ್ಯಾಮ್ charming, ನದೀಮ್ to river, ಯಯುಃ proceeded.

All of them circumambulated the mighty mountain Chitrakuta and proceeded east
towards the charming river Mandakini.
ಪಶ್ಯನ್ಧಾತುಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ರಮ್ಯಾಣಿ ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ ಚ.

ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ತಸ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇನ ಸಸೈನ್ಯೋ ಭರತಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.113.4৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ರಮ್ಯಾಣಿ beautiful, ವಿವಿಧಾನಿ various, ಧಾತುಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ a thousand varieties of minerals, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ beholding, ಸಸೈನ್ಯಃ with army, ತಸ್ಯ that mountain's, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವೇ alongside, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ went.

Beholding a thousand varieties of beautiful minerals, Bharata with his army proceeded alongside the mountain.
ಅದೂರಾಚ್ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ದದರ್ಶ ಭರತಸ್ತದಾ.

ಆಶ್ರಮಂ ಯತ್ರ ಸ ಮುನಿರ್ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ ಕೃತಾಲಯಃ৷৷2.113.5৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ of Chitrakuta, ಅದೂರಾತ್ not far from there, ಯತ್ರ where, ಮುನಿಃ sage, ಸಃ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ that Bharadwaja, ಕೃತಾಲಯಃ made his residence, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Not far from Chitrakuta mountain, Bharata beheld a hermitage where sage Bharadwaja resided.
ಸ ತಮಾಶ್ರಮಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಸ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್.

ಅವತೀರ್ಯ ರಥಾತ್ಪಾದೌ ವವನ್ದೇ ಭರತಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.113.6৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ sagacious, ಸಃ ಭರತಃ that Bharata, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಸ್ಯ Bharadwaja's, ತಮ್ ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ that hermitage, ಆಗಮ್ಯ having reached, ರಥಾತ್ from the chariot, ಅವಿತೀರ್ಯ alighting, ಪಾದೌ at his feet, ವವನ್ದೇ prostrated.

On approaching the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja, Bharata alighted from the chariot,
and prostrated at his feet.
ತತೋ ಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೋ ಭರತಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ಅಪಿ ಕೃತ್ಯಂ ಕೃತಂ ತಾತ! ರಾಮೇಣ ಚ ಸಮಾಗತಮ್৷৷2.113.7৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಹೃಷ್ಟಃ delighted, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಃ Bharadwaja, ಭರತಮ್ to Bharata, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ತಾತ O child, ಕೃತ್ಯಮ್ the task, ಅಪಿ ಕೃತಮ್ has it been accomplished?, ರಾಮೇಣ ಚ with Rama, ಅಪಿ ಸಮಾಗತಮ್ have you met?

Then Bhardwaja asked Bharata in delight, My son, have you accomplished your task? Did you meet Rama?
ಏವಮುಕ್ತ ಸ್ಸ ತು ತತೋ ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ ಧೀಮತಾ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಂ ಭರತೋ ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ৷৷2.113.8৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಧೀಮತಾ by the wise, ಭರದ್ವಾಜೇನ by Bharadwaja, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ having been addressed, ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ devoted to righteousness, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ to Bharadwaja, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

Having been thus addressed by wise Bharadwaja, Bharata, devoted to righteousness, replied:
ಸ ಯಾಚ್ಯಮಾನೋ ಗುರುಣಾ ಮಯಾ ಚ ದೃಢವಿಕ್ರಮಃ.

ರಾಘವಃ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತೋ ವಶಿಷ್ಠಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.113.9৷৷


ಗುರುಣಾ by the preceptor (Vasistha), ಮಯಾ by me, ಯಾಚ್ಯಮಾನಃ entreated, ದೃಢವಿಕ್ರಮಃ of firmness of mind, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತಃ highly pleased, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಮ್ to Vasistha, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

Entreated by me and by preceptor (Vasistha), the highly pleased Rama with his firmness of mind replied to Vasistha:
ಪಿತುಃ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಂ ತಾಮೇವ ಪಾಲಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ.

ಚತುರ್ದಶ ಹಿ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಯಾ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾ ಪಿತುರ್ಮಮ৷৷2.113.10৷৷


ಚತುರ್ದಶ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಹಿ fourteen years indeed, ಮಮ ಪಿತುಃ to my father, ಯಾ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾ that promise, ಪಿತುಃ of my father, ತಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾಮ್ ಏವ that promise only, ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ truly, ಪಾಲಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ shall honour.

In sooth, I shall honour the words of promise given by my father and live in the forest for fourteen years, as promised.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ.

ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಕುಶಲಂ ರಾಘವಂ ವಚನಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷2.113.11৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ spoken, ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞಃ great intellectual, ವಾಕ್ಯಜ್ಞಃ eloquent, ವಸಿಷ್ಠಃ Vasistha, ವಾಕ್ಯಕುಶಲಮ್ skilled in words, ರಾಘವಮ್ Rama, ಮಹತ್ of deep significance, ವಚನಮ್ words, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ಹ replied.

On hearing him, Vasistha a great intellectual and highly eloquent one replied to Rama, skilled in words of deep significance.
ಏತೇ ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಃ ಪಾದುಕೇ ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತೇ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಕರೇ ತವ৷৷2.113.12৷৷


ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞ O extemely sagacious one, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಃ with pleasure, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ of Ayodhya, ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮಕರೇ securing safety and security, ಏತೇ these two, ಹೇಮಭೂಷಿತೇ decorated with gold, ತವ ಪಾದುಕೇ your pair of sandals, ಪ್ರಯಚ್ಛ bestow.

O extremely sagacious one, bestow with pleasure your sandals decked with gold for security and safety of Ayodhya.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ರಾಘವಃ ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ.

ಪಾದುಕೇ ಹ್ಯಧಿರುಹ್ಯೈತೇ ಮಮ ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ ವೈ ದದೌ৷৷2.113.13৷৷


ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ by Vasistha, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ having spoken, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಪ್ರಾಙ್ಮುಖಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ standing eastward, ಏತೇ these, ಪಾದುಕೇ sandals, ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ wearing, ಮಮ to me, ರಾಜ್ಯಾಯ for the
sake of ruling the kingdom, ದದೌ bestowed.

Thus addressed by Vasistha, Rama stood facing eastward wearing these sandals. and bestowed them on me for the sake of ruling the kingdom.
ನಿವೃತ್ತೋಹಮನುಜ್ಞಾತೋ ರಾಮೇಣ ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮೇವ ಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ ಪಾದುಕೇ ಶುಭೇ৷৷2.113.14৷৷


ಸುಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the highly magnanimous, ರಾಮೇಣ by Rama, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತಃ having been permitted, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನಿವೃತ್ತಃ am returning, ಶುಭೇ auspicious, ಪಾದುಕೇ sandals, ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ taking, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮೇವ to Ayodhya only, ಗಚ್ಛಾಮಿ am going.

I am now returning to Ayodhya with these auspicious sandals permitted by the magnanimous Rama.
ಏತಚ್ಛ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಶುಭಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಭರದ್ವಾಜಶ್ಶುಭತರಂ ಮುನಿರ್ವಾಕ್ಯಮುವಾಚ ತಮ್৷৷2.113.15৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ of the magnanimous, ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ಶುಭಮ್ auspicious, ಏತತ್ all these, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಭರದ್ವಾಜ: Bharadwaja, ಮುನಿಃ sage, ಶುಭತರಮ್ the more auspicious, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ words, ತಮ್ addressing Bharata, ಉವಾಚ said.

Hearing the auspicious words of the magnanimous Bharata, sage Bharadwaja said to him in words still more auspicious.
ನೈತಚ್ಚಿತ್ರಂ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಶೀಲವೃತ್ತವತಾಂ ವರ.

ಯದಾರ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಯಿ ತಿಷ್ಠೇತ್ತು ನಿಮ್ನೇ ಸೃಷ್ಟಮಿವೋದಕಮ್৷৷2.113.16৷৷


ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ O best of men, ಶೀಲವೃತ್ತವತಾಮ್ among men of excellent character and dispositon, ವರ foremost, ಸೃಷ್ಟಮ್ poured out, ಉದಕಮ್ water, ನಿಮ್ನೇ ಇವ like downward, ಆರ್ಯಮ್ noble, ತ್ವಯಿ
in you, ಯತ್ ತಿಷ್ಠೇತ್ reside, ಏತತ್ that one, ಚಿತ್ರಮ್ surprising, ನ not.

O best of men, foremost among men of excellent character and dispositon, it is not surprising that all noble qualities come to reside in you naturally like water poured flowing downward.
ಅಮೃತ ಸ್ಸಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಪಿತಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ತವ.

ಯಸ್ಯ ತ್ವಮೀದೃಶ: ಪುತ್ರೋ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞೋ ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ৷৷2.113.17৷৷


ಯಸ್ಯ of whom, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of righteousness, ಧರ್ಮವತ್ಸಲಃ one who is devoted to duty, ಈದೃಶಃ endowed with such qualties, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪುತ್ರಃ as son, ಸಃ such, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed man, ತವ your, ಪಿತಾ father, ದಶರಥಃ Dasaratha, ಅಮೃತಃ is not dead.

With you as his son, endowed with qualities of righteousness and devotion to duty, your mighty-armed father Dasaratha is not dead. (He lives through you).
ತಮೃಷಿಂ ತು ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮುಕ್ತವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ.

ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತುಮಾರೇಭೇ ಚರಣಾವುಪಗೃಹ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.113.18৷৷


ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಉಕ್ತವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ having spoken thus, ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಮ್ magnanimous one, ತಂ ಋಷಿಮ್ that sage, ಚರಣೌ feet, ಉಪಗೃಹ್ಯ clasping, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರಯಿತುಮ್ to take leave of, ಆರೇಭೇ he commenced.

Hearing the words of the magnanimous Bharadwaja, Bharata paid his respect, folding his palms, and clasping the feet of the sage and sought his permission to leave.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಂ ಪುನಃ ಪುನಃ.

ಭರತಸ್ತು ಯಯೌ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಸಹ ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಃ৷৷2.113.19৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ the illustrious, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪುನ ಪುನಃ again and again, ಭರದ್ವಾಜಮ್ to
Bharadwaja, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಮ್ circumambulation, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having done, ಮನ್ತ್ರಿಭಿಸ್ಸಹ along with the counsellors, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ to Ayodhya, ಯಯೌ set out.

Then illustrious Bharata circumambulated the sage several times in homage before he
set out for Ayodhya with his counsellors.
ಯಾನೈಶ್ಚ ಶಕಟೈಶ್ಚೈವ ಹಯೈರ್ನಾಗೈಶ್ಚ ಸಾ ಚಮೂಃ.

ಪುನರ್ನಿವೃತ್ತಾ ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಾ ಭರತಸ್ಯಾನುಯಾಯಿನೀ৷৷2.113.20 ৷৷


ಭರತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ವಿಸ್ತೀರ್ಣಾ vast, ಸಾ ಚಮೂಃ that army, ಅನುಯಾಯಿನೀ following, ಯಾನೈಶ್ಚ with carriages, ಶಕಟೈಶ್ಚೈವ with carts, ಹಯೈಃ with horses, ನಾಗೈಶ್ಚ with elephants, ಪುನಃ again, ನಿವೃತ್ತಾ turned back towards Ayodhya.

The vast army of Bharata with all its carriages, carts, horses and elephants following him again turned back towards Ayodhya.
ತತಸ್ತೇ ಯಮುನಾಂ ದಿವ್ಯಾಂ ನದೀಂ ತೀರ್ತ್ವೋರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್.

ದದೃಶುಸ್ತಾಂ ಪುನ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ ಶುಭಜಲಾಂ ನದೀಮ್৷৷2.113.21৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ದಿವ್ಯಾಮ್ divine, ಊರ್ಮಿಮಾಲಿನೀಮ್ wreathed with waves, ಯಮುನಾಂ ನದೀಮ್ river Yamuna, ತೀರ್ತ್ವಾ having crossed, ಶುಭಜಲಾಮ್ of auspicious waters of, ತಾಂ ಗಙ್ಗಾಂ that Ganga, ನದೀಮ್ river, ಪುನಃ again, ದದೃಶುಃ beheld.

Thereafter, all of them crossed the divine river Yamuna wreathed in waves and, beheld the Ganga of sacred waters once again.
ತಾಂ ರಮ್ಯಜಲಸಂಪೂರ್ಣಾಂ ಸನ್ತೀರ್ಯ ಸಹಬಾನ್ಧವಃ

ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರಂ ರಮ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ ಸಸೈನಿಕಃ.

ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರಾದ್ಭೂಯ ಸ್ತ್ವಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಸನ್ದದರ್ಶ ಹ৷৷2.113.22৷৷


ರಮ್ಯಜಲಸಂಪೂರ್ಣಾಮ್ overflowing with wonderful waters, ತಾಮ್ to Ganga , ಸಹಬಾನ್ಧವಃ with relations,
ಸನ್ತೀರ್ಯ having crossed, ಸಸೈನಿಕಃ with army, ರಮ್ಯಮ್ beautiful, ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರಮ್ Sringiberapura, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered, ಶೃಙ್ಗಿಬೇರಪುರಾತ್ from Sringiberapura, ಭೂಯಃ again, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಸನ್ದದರ್ಶ ಹ
beheld.

Bharata along with his kins and his army crossed the Ganga with its overflowing, wonderful waters and entered the beautiful city of Sringiberapura and from there he proceeded until he beheld the city of Ayodhya.
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ತತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ವಿವರ್ಜಿತಾಮ್.

ಭರತೋ ದುಃಖ ಸನ್ತಪ್ತ ಸ್ಸಾರಥಿಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್৷৷2.113.23৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by father, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ by brothers, ವಿವರ್ಜಿತಾಮ್ deserted, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ after seeing, ದುಃಖ ಸನ್ತಪ್ತಃ consumed with grief, ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ to the charioteer, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

On seeing the city of Ayodhya bereft of his father and brothers, Bharata, consumed with grief, said to the charioteer:
ಸಾರಥೇ ಪಶ್ಯ ವಿಧ್ವಸ್ತಾ ಸಾಯೋಧ್ಯಾ ನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶತೇ.

ನಿರಾಕಾರ ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾ ದೀನಾ ಪ್ರತಿಹತಸ್ವರಾ৷৷2.113.24৷৷


ಸಾರಥೇ O charioteer, ವಿಧ್ವಸ್ತಾ ruined, ಸಾ ಆಯೋಧ್ಯಾ that Ayodhya, ನಿರಾಕಾರಾ formless, ನಿರಾನನ್ದಾ cheerless, ದೀನಾ desolate, ಪ್ರತಿಹತಸ್ವರಾ silent, ನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶತೇ does not shine, ಪಶ್ಯ see.

O charioteer, look, Ayodhya is in shapeless shambles. It is silent and cheerless. It is dull and desolate. It shines no more.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ತ್ರಯೋದಶೋರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.
