ಮಹಾಯಶಃ renowned, ಪ್ರಭುಃ lord, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಗಮ್ಭೀರಘೋಷೇಣ with its deep, soothing sound, ಸ್ಯನ್ದನೇನ by the chariot, ಉಪಯಾನ್ while travelling, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮ್ soon, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಮ್ Ayodhya, ಪ್ರವಿವೇಶ entered.
Bharata, the renowned lord (of Ayodhya) travelled on the chariot that produced a deep, soothing, sound. And entered Ayodhya soon.

ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ illustrious, ದಶರಥಾತ್ಮಜಃ son of Dasaratha, ಭರತಸ್ತು Bharata, ರಥಸ್ಥಸ್ಸನ್ seated in the chariot, ರಥಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ the most excellent of chariots, ವಾಹಯನ್ತಮ್ driving, ಸಾರಥಿಮ್ to the charioteer, ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ these words, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.
Illustrious Bharata, son of Dasaratha, seated in his chariot, addressed the charioteer as he drove the most excellent of chariots saying:
ಕಿಂ ನು ಖಲ್ವದ್ಯ ಗಮ್ಭೀರೋ ಮೂರ್ಛಿತೋ ನ ನಿಶಮ್ಯತೇ.

ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ In Ayodhya, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಯಥಾಪುರಮ್ as in the past, ಗಮ್ಭೀರಃ deep, ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ all-pervasive,
ಗೀತವಾದಿತ್ರನಿಸ್ವನಃ songs and sounds of musical instruments, ನ ನಿಶಮ್ಯತೇ are not heard, ಕಿಂ ನು ಖಲು what could be the reason?
How is it that in Ayodhya, the deep and all-pervasive songs and sounds of musical instruments of the former days are not heard now?
ವಾರುಣೀಮದಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ ಮಾಲ್ಯಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ.
ಧೂಪಿತಾಗುರುಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ ನ ಪ್ರವಾತಿ ಸಮನ್ತತಃ৷৷2.114.23৷৷

ವಾರುಣೀಮದಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, ಮಾಲ್ಯಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ the fragrance of flower garlands, ಧೂಪಿತಾಗರುಗನ್ಧಶ್ಚ the fragrance of agaru or incense, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ everywhere, ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ pervading, ನ ಪ್ರವಾತಿ does not blow.
The breeze no longer carries the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, the pervading fragrance of flower garlands and agaru (incense).
ಯಾನಪ್ರವರಘೋಷಶ್ಚ ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಶ್ಚ ಹಯನಿಸ್ವನಃ.
ಪ್ರಮತ್ತಗಜನಾದಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾಂಶ್ಚ ರಥನಿಸ್ವನಃ৷৷2.114.24৷৷
ನೇದಾನೀಂ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಪುರ್ಯಾಮಸ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಮೇ ವಿವಾಸಿತೇ.

ನೇದಾನೀಂ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ ಪುರ್ಯಾಮಸ್ಯಾಂ ರಾಮೇ ವಿವಾಸಿತೇ.
ರಾಮೇ Rama, ವಿವಾಸಿತೇ having been exiled, ಇದಾನೀಮ್ now, ಅಸ್ಯಾಂ ಪುರ್ಯಾಮ್ in this city, ಯಾನಪ್ರವರಘೋಷಶ್ಚ clatter of excellent carriages, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಃ pleasant, ಹಯನಿಸ್ವನಶ್ಚ neighing of horses, ಪ್ರಮತ್ತಗಜನಾದಶ್ಚ trumpeting of elephants in rut, ಮಹಾನ್ great, ರಥನಿಸ್ವನಃ ಚ rattle of chariots, ನ ಶ್ರೂಯತೇ are not heard.
After Rama's the exile the clatter of excellent carriages, the pleasing neighing of horses and trumpeting of elephants in rut and the rattle of chariots are no longer heard now.
ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಗನ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾಶ್ಚ ನವಸ್ರಜಃ.
ಗತೇ ಹಿ ರಾಮೇ ತರುಣಾ ಸ್ಸಂತಪ್ತಾ ನೋಪಭುಞ್ಜತೇ৷৷2.114.25৷৷

ರಾಮೇ Rama, ಗತೇ having departed, ತರುಣಾಃ the young men, ಸಂತಪ್ತಾಃ distressed, ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಗನ್ಧಾಂಶ್ಚ incense of agaru and sandalwood paste, ಮಹಾರ್ಹಾ: expensive, ನವಸ್ರಜಶ್ಚ garlands of fresh flowers, ನೋಪಭುಞ್ಜತೇ do not enjoy.
Since Rama has departed, the young men in distress do not enjoy expensive incense of agaru and sandalwood paste and garlands of fresh flowers.
ಬಹಿರ್ಯಾತ್ರಾಂ ನ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ಚಿತ್ರಮಾಲ್ಯಧರಾ ನರಾಃ.
ನೋತ್ಸವಾ ಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರವರ್ತನ್ತೇ ರಾಮಶೋಕಾರ್ದಿತೇ ಪುರೇ৷৷2.114.27৷৷

ರಾಮಶೋಕಾರ್ದಿತೇ stricken with grief on account of separation from Rama, ಪುರೇ in the city, ನರಾಃ men, ಚಿತ್ರಮಾಲ್ಯಧರಾಃ wearing garlands of variegated flowers, ಬಹಿಃ outside, ಯಾತ್ರಾಮ್ pleasure jaunts, ನ ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ do not go, ಉತ್ಸವಾಃ festivites, ನ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರವರ್ತನ್ತೇ are not celebrated.
This city is stricken with grief on account of Rama's departure. Men do not go out on pleasure jaunts wearing garlands of variegated flowers. Festivities are not celebrated.
ಸಹ ನೂನಂ ಮಮ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಪುರಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ದ್ಯುತಿರ್ಗತಾ.
ನ ಹಿ ರಾಜತ್ಯಯೋಧ್ಯೇಯಂ ಸಾಸಾರೇವಾರ್ಜುನೀ ಕ್ಷಪಾ৷৷2.114.28৷৷

ಅಸ್ಯ ಪುರಸ್ಯ of this city, ದ್ಯುತಿಃ splendour, ಮಮ my, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ಸಹ along with brother, ಗತಾ had left, ನೂನಮ್ certainly, ಇಯಮ್ this, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾ Ayodhya, ಸಾಸಾರಾ with rain pouring down, ಅರ್ಜುನೀ relating to the waning Moon, ಕ್ಷಪಾ ಇವ like night, ನ ರಾಜತಿ ಹಿ does not gleam.
Certainly splendour has left along with my brother. Like the night when the rain pours down during the waning of the Moon, Ayodhya shines not.
ಕದಾ ನು ಖಲು ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವ ಇವಾಗತಃ.
ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತ್ಯಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಹರ್ಷಂ ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮ ಇವಾಮ್ಬುದಃ৷৷2.114.29৷৷
ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತ್ಯಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಹರ್ಷಂ ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮ ಇವಾಮ್ಬುದಃ৷৷2.114.29৷৷
ಮೇ ಭ್ರಾತಾ my brother, ಮಹೋತ್ಸವ ಇವ like a carnival, ಆಗತಃ having returned, ಗ್ರೀಷ್ಮೇ in summer,
ಅಮ್ಬುದಃ ಇವ like clouds, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಹರ್ಷಮ್ delight, ಕದಾ when, ಜನಯಿಷ್ಯತಿ ನು ಖಲು will cause.
When will my brother return to Ayodhya like a carnival and cause delight to every one like summer clouds?
ತರುಣೈಶ್ಚಾರುವೇಷೈಶ್ಚ ನರೈರುನ್ನತಗಾಮಿಭಿಃ.
ಸಮ್ಪತದ್ಭಿರಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ನಾಭಿಭಾನ್ತಿ ಮಹಾಪಥಾಃ৷৷2.114.30৷৷
ಸಮ್ಪತದ್ಭಿರಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ನಾಭಿಭಾನ್ತಿ ಮಹಾಪಥಾಃ৷৷2.114.30৷৷
ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Ayodhya, ಮಹಾಪಥಾಃ highways, ಚಾರುವೇಷೈಃ by those elegantly attired, ಉನ್ನತಗಾಮಿಭಿಃ with their majestic gait, ಸಮ್ಪತದ್ಭಿಃ by those coming together in groups, ತರುಣೈಃ young men, ನರೈಃ men, ನಾಭಿಭಾನ್ತಿ is not shining.
The highways of Ayodhya thronged with groups of elegantly attired young men or adults with their majestic gait, do not shine.
ಏವಂ ಬಹುವಿಧಂ ಜಲ್ಪನ್ವಿವೇಶ ವಸತಿಂ ಪಿತುಃ.
ತೇನ ಹೀನಾಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ಸಿಂಹಹೀನಾಂ ಗುಹಾಮಿವ৷৷2.114.31৷৷
ತೇನ ಹೀನಾಂ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ ಸಿಂಹಹೀನಾಂ ಗುಹಾಮಿವ৷৷2.114.31৷৷
ಏವಮ್ thus, ಬಹುವಿಧಮ್ in several ways, ಜಲ್ಪನ್ talking, ತೇನ by that, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರೇಣ by the king, ಹೀನಾಮ್ bereft of, ಸಿಂಹಹೀನಾಮ್ without a lion, ಗುಹಾಮಿವ like a cave, ಪಿತುಃ father's, ವಸತಿಮ್ residence, ವಿವೇಶ entered.
Thus mourning in several ways, Bharata entered his fathers' palace (now) bereft of the king like a cave without the lion.
ತದಾ ತದನ್ತಃ ಪುರಮುಞ್ಝಿತಪ್ರಭಂ ಸುರೈರಿವೋತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಮಭಾಸ್ಕರಂ ದಿನಮ್.
ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಂ ತು ವಿವಿಕ್ತಮಾತ್ಮವಾನ್ಮುಮೋಚ ಬಾಷ್ಪಂ ಭರತಃ ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ৷৷2.114.32৷৷
ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಂ ತು ವಿವಿಕ್ತಮಾತ್ಮವಾನ್ಮುಮೋಚ ಬಾಷ್ಪಂ ಭರತಃ ಸುದುಃಖಿತಃ৷৷2.114.32৷৷
ತದಾ then, ಆತ್ಮವಾನ್ self-possessed, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ಸುರೈಃ by gods, ಉತ್ಸೃಷ್ಟಮ್ deprived of,
ಅಭಾಸ್ಕರಮ್ without the Sun, ದಿನಮಿವ like a day, ಉಞ್ಝಿತಪ್ರಭಮ್ shorn of splendour, ವಿವಿಕ್ತಮ್ secluded, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ತತ್ ಅನ್ತಃಪುರಮ್ that inner apartment, ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಬಾಷ್ಪಮ್
tears in distress, ಮುಮೋಚ shed.
Self-possessed Bharata beholding the secluded inner apartment deserted by the gods shorn of splendour, like the day deprived of the Sun shed tears in distress.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಚತುರ್ದಶೋತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.
Thus ends the hundredfourteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
