Bharata, the renowned lord (of Ayodhya) travelled on the chariot that produced a deep, soothing, sound. And entered Ayodhya soon.

(The city looked) like Rohini, the beloved consort of the Moon, the star which was
majesticlly radiating flaming brilliance and now, tormented by the exalted Rahu which has eclipsed the Moon, shines alone.

Illustrious Bharata, son of Dasaratha, seated in his chariot, addressed the charioteer as he drove the most excellent of chariots saying:
కిం ను ఖల్వద్య గమ్భీరో మూర్ఛితో న నిశమ్యతే.
యథాపురమయోధ్యాయాం గీతవాదిత్రనిస్వనః৷৷2.114.22৷৷

గీతవాదిత్రనిస్వనః songs and sounds of musical instruments, న నిశమ్యతే are not heard, కిం ను ఖలు what could be the reason?
How is it that in Ayodhya, the deep and all-pervasive songs and sounds of musical instruments of the former days are not heard now?
వారుణీమదగన్ధశ్చ మాల్యగన్ధశ్చ మూర్ఛితః.
ధూపితాగురుగన్ధశ్చ న ప్రవాతి సమన్తతః৷৷2.114.23৷৷

వారుణీమదగన్ధశ్చ the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, మాల్యగన్ధశ్చ the fragrance of flower garlands, ధూపితాగరుగన్ధశ్చ the fragrance of agaru or incense, సమన్తతః everywhere, మూర్ఛితః pervading, న ప్రవాతి does not blow.
The breeze no longer carries the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, the pervading fragrance of flower garlands and agaru (incense).
యానప్రవరఘోషశ్చ స్నిగ్ధశ్చ హయనిస్వనః.
ప్రమత్తగజనాదశ్చ మహాంశ్చ రథనిస్వనః৷৷2.114.24৷৷
నేదానీం శ్రూయతే పుర్యామస్యాం రామే వివాసితే.

రామే Rama, వివాసితే having been exiled, ఇదానీమ్ now, అస్యాం పుర్యామ్ in this city, యానప్రవరఘోషశ్చ clatter of excellent carriages, స్నిగ్ధః pleasant, హయనిస్వనశ్చ neighing of horses, ప్రమత్తగజనాదశ్చ trumpeting of elephants in rut, మహాన్ great, రథనిస్వనః చ rattle of chariots, న శ్రూయతే are not heard.
After Rama's the exile the clatter of excellent carriages, the pleasing neighing of horses and trumpeting of elephants in rut and the rattle of chariots are no longer heard now.
చన్దనాగరుగన్ధాంశ్చ మహార్హాశ్చ నవస్రజః.
గతే హి రామే తరుణా స్సంతప్తా నోపభుఞ్జతే৷৷2.114.25৷৷

రామే Rama, గతే having departed, తరుణాః the young men, సంతప్తాః distressed, చన్దనాగరుగన్ధాంశ్చ incense of agaru and sandalwood paste, మహార్హా: expensive, నవస్రజశ్చ garlands of fresh flowers, నోపభుఞ్జతే do not enjoy.
Since Rama has departed, the young men in distress do not enjoy expensive incense of agaru and sandalwood paste and garlands of fresh flowers.
బహిర్యాత్రాం న గచ్ఛన్తి చిత్రమాల్యధరా నరాః.
నోత్సవా స్సమ్ప్రవర్తన్తే రామశోకార్దితే పురే৷৷2.114.27৷৷

రామశోకార్దితే stricken with grief on account of separation from Rama, పురే in the city, నరాః men, చిత్రమాల్యధరాః wearing garlands of variegated flowers, బహిః outside, యాత్రామ్ pleasure jaunts, న గచ్ఛన్తి do not go, ఉత్సవాః festivites, న సమ్ప్రవర్తన్తే are not celebrated.
This city is stricken with grief on account of Rama's departure. Men do not go out on pleasure jaunts wearing garlands of variegated flowers. Festivities are not celebrated.
సహ నూనం మమ భ్రాత్రా పురస్యాస్య ద్యుతిర్గతా.
న హి రాజత్యయోధ్యేయం సాసారేవార్జునీ క్షపా৷৷2.114.28৷৷

అస్య పురస్య of this city, ద్యుతిః splendour, మమ my, భ్రాత్రా సహ along with brother, గతా had left, నూనమ్ certainly, ఇయమ్ this, అయోధ్యా Ayodhya, సాసారా with rain pouring down, అర్జునీ relating to the waning Moon, క్షపా ఇవ like night, న రాజతి హి does not gleam.
Certainly splendour has left along with my brother. Like the night when the rain pours down during the waning of the Moon, Ayodhya shines not.
కదా ను ఖలు మే భ్రాతా మహోత్సవ ఇవాగతః.
జనయిష్యత్యయోధ్యాయాం హర్షం గ్రీష్మ ఇవామ్బుదః৷৷2.114.29৷৷

మే భ్రాతా my brother, మహోత్సవ ఇవ like a carnival, ఆగతః having returned, గ్రీష్మే in summer,
అమ్బుదః ఇవ like clouds, అయోధ్యాయామ్ in Ayodhya, హర్షమ్ delight, కదా when, జనయిష్యతి ను ఖలు will cause.
When will my brother return to Ayodhya like a carnival and cause delight to every one like summer clouds?
తరుణైశ్చారువేషైశ్చ నరైరున్నతగామిభిః.
సమ్పతద్భిరయోధ్యాయాం నాభిభాన్తి మహాపథాః৷৷2.114.30৷৷

అయోధ్యాయామ్ in Ayodhya, మహాపథాః highways, చారువేషైః by those elegantly attired, ఉన్నతగామిభిః with their majestic gait, సమ్పతద్భిః by those coming together in groups, తరుణైః young men, నరైః men, నాభిభాన్తి is not shining.
The highways of Ayodhya thronged with groups of elegantly attired young men or adults with their majestic gait, do not shine.
ఏవం బహువిధం జల్పన్వివేశ వసతిం పితుః.
తేన హీనాం నరేన్ద్రేణ సింహహీనాం గుహామివ৷৷2.114.31৷৷

ఏవమ్ thus, బహువిధమ్ in several ways, జల్పన్ talking, తేన by that, నరేన్ద్రేణ by the king, హీనామ్ bereft of, సింహహీనామ్ without a lion, గుహామివ like a cave, పితుః father's, వసతిమ్ residence, వివేశ entered.
Thus mourning in several ways, Bharata entered his fathers' palace (now) bereft of the king like a cave without the lion.
తదా తదన్తః పురముఞ్ఝితప్రభం సురైరివోత్సృష్టమభాస్కరం దినమ్.
నిరీక్ష్య సర్వం తు వివిక్తమాత్మవాన్ముమోచ బాష్పం భరతః సుదుఃఖితః৷৷2.114.32৷৷

తదా then, ఆత్మవాన్ self-possessed, భరతః Bharata, సురైః by gods, ఉత్సృష్టమ్ deprived of,
అభాస్కరమ్ without the Sun, దినమివ like a day, ఉఞ్ఝితప్రభమ్ shorn of splendour, వివిక్తమ్ secluded, సర్వమ్ entire, తత్ అన్తఃపురమ్ that inner apartment, నిరీక్ష్య having seen, బాష్పమ్
tears in distress, ముమోచ shed.
Self-possessed Bharata beholding the secluded inner apartment deserted by the gods shorn of splendour, like the day deprived of the Sun shed tears in distress.
ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే వాల్మీకీయ ఆదికావ్యే అయోధ్యాకాణ్డే చతుర్దశోత్తరశతతమస్సర్గః.
Thus ends the hundredfourteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
