[ Apprehensions of ascetics residing at Chitrakuta --- fear of Khara brother of Ravana --- atrocities of rakshasas --- ascetics take leave of Rama and depart.]

ಪ್ರತಿಪ್ರಯಾತೇ ಭರತೇ ವಸನ್ರಾಮಸ್ತಪೋವನೇ.

ಲಕ್ಷಯಾಮಾಸ ಸೋದ್ವೇಗಮಥೌತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್৷৷2.116.1৷৷


ಭರತೇ Bharata, ಪ್ರತಿಪ್ರಯಾತೇ had departed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಪೋವನೇ in the grove of ascetics, ಅಥ then, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಾಮ್ of ascetics, ಸೋದ್ವೇಗಮ್ filled with apprehension, ಔತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಮ್ eagerness (with intense desire to leave that forest), ಲಕ್ಷಯಾಮಾಸ observed.

After Bharta, had departed, Rama who was living in the penance-grove of ascetics observed that the ascetics were filled with apprehensions, and were eager (to leave that forest).
ಯೇ ತತ್ರ ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ತಾಪಸಾಶ್ರಮೇ.

ರಾಮಮಾಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ನಿರತಾಸ್ತಾನಲಕ್ಷಯದುತ್ಸುಕಾನ್৷৷2.116.2৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ in front of, ಚಿತ್ರಕೂಟಸ್ಯ of Chitrakuta, ತಾಪಸಾಶ್ರಮೇ in the hermitage, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಆಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ sought his protection, ನಿರತಾಃ intent on staying, ತಾನ್ them, ಉತ್ಸುಕಾನ್ anxious, ಅಲಕ್ಷಯತ್ observed.

Rama observed that the sages who earlier sought to stay with him near his hermitage
under his protection on chitrakuta were filled with anxiety (now).
ನಯನೈರ್ಬ್ರುಕುಟೀಭಿಶ್ಚ ರಾಮಂ ನಿರ್ದಿಶ್ಯ ಶಙ್ಕಿತಾಃ.

ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಮುಪಜಲ್ಪನ್ತ ಶ್ಶನೈಶ್ಚಕ್ರುರ್ಮಿಥಃ ಕಥಾಃ৷৷2.116.3৷৷


ಶಙ್ಕಿತಾಃ suspicious, ನಯನೈಃ with eyes, ಭೃಕುಟೀಭಿಶ್ಚ by knitting their eyebrows, ರಾಮಮ್ of Rama, ನಿರ್ದಿಶ್ಯ glancing, ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯಮ್ to each other, ಉಪಜಲ್ಪನ್ತಃ conversing, ಮಿಥಃ mutually,
ಕಥಾಃ incidents, ಚಕ್ರುಃ narrated.

Those sages, glancing at Rama with suspicious eyes, knitting their eye-brows and murmering among themselves, conversed secretly.
ತೇಷಾಮೌತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಮಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ತ್ವಾತ್ಮನಿ ಶಙ್ಕಿತಃ.

ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿರುವಾಚೇದಮೃಷಿಂ ಕುಲಪತಿಂ ತತಃ৷৷2.116.4৷৷


ತತಃ then, ರಾಮಸ್ತು as for Rama, ತೇಷಾಮ್ their, ಔತ್ಸುಕ್ಯಮ್ anxiety, ಆಲಕ್ಷ್ಯ having observed, ಸ್ಯಾ ಸ್ವಾತ್ಮನಿ in his mind, ಶಙ್ಕಿತಃ suspecting, ಕೃತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms in reverence, ಕುಲಪತಿಮ್ the chief of the hermitage, ಋಷಿಮ್ that sage, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Having observed their anxiety, Rama apprehending somethig in his mind approached the chief of the hermitage with folded palms and said:
ನ ಕಚ್ಚಿದ್ಭಗವನ್ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪೂರ್ವವೃತ್ತಮಿದಂ ಮಯಿ.

ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ ವಿಕೃತಂ ಯೇನ ವಿಕ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ৷৷2.116.5৷৷


ಭಗವತ್ O revered one, ಮಯಿ in me, ಪೂರ್ವವೃತ್ತಮ್ earlier conduct, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ nothing, ಇದಮ್ this, ವಿಕೃತಮ್ change, ನ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ not noticed, ಯೇನ by what, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಃ sages, ವಿಕ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ are perturbed.

O revered sire, have you seen any change in my conduct? For what reason are the sages looking perturbed?
ಪ್ರಮಾದಾಚ್ಚರಿತಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ಕಿಞ್ಚಿನ್ನಾವರಜಸ್ಯ ಮೇ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯರ್ಷಿಭಿದೃಷ್ಟಂ ನಾನುರೂಪಮಿವಾತ್ಮನಃ৷৷2.116.6৷৷


ಮೇ ಅವರಜಸ್ಯ my younger brother's, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯ of Lakshmana, ಪ್ರಮಾದಾತ್ through inadvertance, ಆತ್ಮನಃ himself, ನಾನುರೂಪಂ unbefitting, ಚರಿತಮ್ conduct, ಋಷಿಭಿಃ by sages, ದೃಷ್ಟಂ ಕಚ್ಚಿತ್ has been seen.

Have the sages found my younger brother Lakshmana doing something unbecoming of him through inadvertence?
ಕಚ್ಚಿಚ್ಛುಶ್ರೂಷಮಾಣಾ ವ ಶ್ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಣಪರಾ ಮಯಿ.

ಪ್ರಮದಾಭ್ಯುಚಿತಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ಸೀತಾ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ನ ವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.116.7৷৷


ವಃ to you, ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಮಾಣಾ engaged in serving, ಮಯಿ in me, ಶುಶ್ರೂಷಣಪರಾ devoted to service, ಸೀತಾ by Sita, ಪ್ರಮದಾಭ್ಯುಚಿತಾಮ್ befitting a woman, ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ conduct, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ properly, ನ ವರ್ತತೇ ಕಚ್ಛಿತ್ is not following.

Has Sita devoted in her service to me and engaged in serving you failed to follow the conduct befitting a woman?
ಅಥರ್ಷಿರ್ಜರಯಾ ವೃದ್ಧಸ್ತಪಸಾ ಚ ಜರಾಂ ಗತಃ.

ವೇಪಮಾನ ಇವೋವಾಚ ರಾಮಂ ಭೂತದಯಾಪರಮ್৷৷2.116.8৷৷


ಅಥ then, ಜರಯಾ in old age, ವೃದ್ಧಃ grown old, ತಪಸಾ ಚ also in austerities, ಜರಾಮ್ old age, ಗತಃ attained, ಋಷಿಃ ascetic, ವೇಪಮಾನ ಇವ as though trembling, ಭೂತದಯಾಪರಮ್ compassionate to all beings, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಉವಾಚ said.

Hearing those words, an ascetic old in age and austerities, as though trembling said to Rama who is compassionate to all beings:
ಕುತಃ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಸತ್ತ್ವಾಯಾಃ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿರತೇಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಚಲನಂ ತಾತ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಸ್ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು ವಿಶೇಷತಃ৷৷2.116.9৷৷


ತಾತ O dear child, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಸತ್ತ್ವಾಯಾಃ of a lady of auspicious nature, ತಥಾ also, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾಭಿರತೇಃ ever engaged in performing auspicious deeds, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾಃ Sita's, ಚಲನಮ್ violation of duty, ವಿಶೇಷತಃ especially, ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು in respect of ascetics, ಕುತಃ how ?

O dear child, how can good-natured Sita who is always engaged in performing auspicious deeds, especially towards ascetics be associated with violation of duty?
ತ್ವನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮಿದಂ ತಾವತ್ತಾಪಸಾನ್ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ತತೇ.

ರಕ್ಷೋಭ್ಯಸ್ತೇನ ಸಂವಿಗ್ನಾಃ ಕಥಯನ್ತಿ ಮಿಥಃ ಕಥಾಃ৷৷2.116.10৷৷


ತ್ವನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for your sake, ರಕ್ಷೋಭ್ಯಃ on account of rakshasas, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ to ascetics, ಇದಮ್ this fear, ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ತತೇ ತಾವತ್ is arising, ತೇನ by that, ಸಂವಿಗ್ನಾಃ they are scared, ಮಿಥ: mutually, ಕಥಾಃ incidents, ಕಥಯನ್ತಿ are exchanging.

There is apprehension for ascetics from the demons on acount of your presence here. That is why they are conversing with one another about the likely fall-out.
ರಾವಣಾವರಜಃ ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ ಖರೋ ನಾಮೇಹ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಃ.

ಉತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ ತಾಪಸಾನ್ಸರ್ವಾಞ್ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿಕೇತನಾನ್৷৷2.116.11৷৷

ಧೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ ಜಿತಕಾಶೀ ಚ ನೃಶಂಸಃ ಪುರುಷಾದಕಃ.

ಅವಲಿಪ್ತಶ್ಚ ಪಾಪಶ್ಚ ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ ತಾತ ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.116.12৷৷


ತಾತ O dear child, ಇಹ here, ರಾವಣಾವರಜಃ Ravana's brother, ಧೃಷ್ಟಶ್ಚ impudent, ಜಿತಕಾಶೀ ಚ appearing victorious, ನೃಶಂಸಃ cruel one, ಪುರುಷಾದಕಃ cannibal, ಅವಲಿಪ್ತಶ್ಚ haughty, ಪಾಪಶ್ಚ a sinner, ಖರೋ ನಾಮ by name Khara, ಜನಸ್ಥಾನನಿಕೇತನಾನ್ residents of 'Janasthanam', ಸರ್ವಾನ್ all, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ ascetics, ಉತ್ಪಾಟ್ಯ having uprooted, ತ್ವಾಂ ಚ you also, ನ ಮೃಷ್ಯತೇ will not pardon.

O dear child, Khara, one of the brothers of Ravana is dwelling in nearby 'Janasthana'. He is impudent, reportedly winner of battles, cruel, sinful, a man-eater and haughty.
He has uprooted all the ascetics from Janasthana. He will not tolerate even you.
ತ್ವಂ ಯದಾಪ್ರಭೃತಿ ಹ್ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಾಶ್ರಮೇ ತಾತ ವರ್ತಸೇ.

ತದಾಪ್ರಭೃತಿ ರಕ್ಷಾಂಸಿ ವಿಪ್ರಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ ತಾಪಸಾನ್৷৷2.116.13৷৷


ತಾತ O dear child, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯದಾಪ್ರಭೃತಿ from the time, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಆಶ್ರಮೇ in this hermitage, ವರ್ತಸೇ started residing, ತದಾಪ್ರಭೃತಿ since that time, ರಕ್ಷಾಂಸಿ rakshasas, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ the ascetics,
ವಿಪ್ರಕುರ್ವನ್ತಿ are tormenting.

O dear child, ever since you started residing in this hermitage rakshasas have been tormenting the ascetics.
ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ ಹಿ ಬೀಭತ್ಸೈಃ ಕ್ರೂರೈರ್ಭೀಷಣಕೈರಪಿ.

ನಾನಾರೂಪೈರ್ವಿರೂಪೈಶ್ಚ ರೂಪೈರ್ವಿಕೃತದರ್ಶನೈಃ৷৷2.116.14৷৷


ಬೀಭತ್ಸೈಃ in distorted appearance, ಕ್ರೂರೈಃ by cruel, ಭೀಷಣಕೈರಪಿ by frightening, ನಾನಾರೂಪೈಃ in various forms, ವಿರೂಪೈಶ್ಚ by deformaed appearance, ವಿಕೃತದರ್ಶನೈಃ detestable looks, ರೂಪೈಃ in forms, ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ they exhibit.

They appear in various distorted forms now rapacious, now fearful, now deformed.
ಅಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೈಶುಚಿಭಿಸ್ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜ್ಯ ಚ ತಾಪಸಾನ್.

ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ನನ್ತ್ಯಪರಾನ್ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮನಾರ್ಯಾಃ ಪುರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ৷৷2.116.15৷৷


ಅನಾರ್ಯಾಃ the wicked rakshasas, ಪುರತಃ in front of, ಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ standing, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ ascetics, ಅಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೈ: forbidden, ಅಶುಚಿಭಿಃ dirty things, ಸಮ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜ್ಯ employing, ಅಪರಾನ್ some other ascetics, ಪ್ರತಿಘ್ನನ್ತಿ are killing.

Those wicked rakshasas employ forbidden and dirty means against ascetics and kill them by suddenly appearing in front of them.
ತೇಷು ತೇಷ್ವಾಶ್ರಮಸ್ಥಾನೇಷ್ವಬುದ್ಧಮವಲೀಯ ಚ.

ರಮನ್ತೇ ತಾಪಸಾಂ ಸ್ತತ್ರ ನಾಶಯನ್ತೋಲ್ಪಚೇತಸಃ৷৷2.116.16৷৷


ಅಲ್ಪಚೇತಸಃ debased ones, ತೇಷು ತೇಷು in different, ಸ್ಥಾನೇಷು in ashram sites, ಅಬುದ್ಧಮ್ without being perceived, ಅವಲೀಯ ಚ after concealing themselves, ತತ್ರ there, ತಾಪಸಾನ್ the ascetics, ನಾಶಯನ್ತಃ while destroying, ರಮನ್ತೇ are taking delight.

These debased rakshasas, concealing themselves in various ashram sites take
delight in harassing and killing the ascetics.
ಅಪಕ್ಷಿಪನ್ತಿ ಸ್ರುಗ್ಭಾಣ್ಡಾನಗ್ನೀಸ್ನಿಞ್ಚನ್ತಿ ವಾರಿಣಾ.

ಕಲಶಾಂಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರಮಧ್ನನ್ತಿ ಹವನೇ ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತೇ৷৷2.116.17৷৷


ಹವನೇ the sacrifices, ಸಮುಪಸ್ಥಿತೇ are about to commence, ಸ್ರುಗ್ಭಾಣ್ಡಾನ್ the sacrificial ladels and vessels containing sacrificial materials, ಅವಕ್ಷಿಪನ್ತಿ throw away, ವಾರಿಣಾ with water, ಅಗ್ನೀನ್ the fire for oblation, ಸಿಞ್ಚನ್ತಿ are drenching, ಕಲಶಾಂಶ್ಚ water-pots, ಪ್ರಮದೇನ್ತೀಧ್ನನ್ತಿ destroy.

When sacrifices are about to start, they throw away the sacrificial ladels and vessels containing sacrificial materials and sprinkle water on sacrificial fire. They also break down the earthen vessels used in the sacrifice.
ತೈರ್ದುರಾತ್ಮಭಿರಾಮೃಷ್ಟಾನಾಶ್ರಮಾನ್ಪ್ರಜಿಹಾಸವಃ.

ಗಮನಾಯಾನ್ಯದೇಶಸ್ಯ ಚೋದಯನ್ತ್ಯೃಷಯೋದ್ಯ ಮಾಮ್৷৷2.116.18৷৷


ಅದ್ಯ now, ಋಷಯಃ sages, ದುರಾತ್ಮಭಿಃ by those beings of wicked nature, ತೈಃ by those rakshasas, ಅಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ infested with, ಆಶ್ರಮಾನ್ the hermitages, ಪ್ರಜಿಹಾಸವಃ those who want to flee, ಅನ್ಯದೇಶಸ್ಯ to another region, ಗಮನಾಯ to go, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಚೋದಯನ್ತಿ are urging.

Now all these sages are urging me to abandon this hermitage infested by these wicked rakshasas and move to another region.
ತತ್ಪುರಾ ರಾಮ ಶಾರೀರಾಮುಪಹಿಂಸಾಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು.

ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ ಹಿ ದುಷ್ಟಾಸ್ತೇ ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ ಇಮಮಾಶ್ರಮಮ್৷৷2.116.19৷৷


ರಾಮ O Rama, ತೇ ದುಷ್ಟಾಃ those vile creatures, ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು to these sages, ಶಾರೀರಾಮ್ physical, ಉಪಹಿಂಸಾಮ್ violence, ಪುರಾ ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ ಹಿ they show in the begining, ತತ್ for that reason, ಇಮಮ್ ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ this ashram, ತ್ಯಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಃ we are going to quit.

O Rama, those vile creatures resort to physical violence against ascetics, we have therefore, resolved to quit this ashram.
ಬಹುಮೂಲಫಲಂ ಚಿತ್ರಮವಿದೂರಾದಿತೋ ವನಮ್.

ಪುರಾಣಾಶ್ರಮಮೇವಾಹಂ ಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ ಸಗಣಃ ಪುನಃ৷৷2.116.20৷৷


ಇತಃ from here, ಅವಿದೂರಾತ್ not very far, ಬಹುಮೂಲಫಲಮ್ abounding in roots and fruits, ಚಿತ್ರಮ್ ವನಮ್ lovely woods, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪುನಃ again, ಸಗಣಃ with my companions, ಪುರಾಣಾಶ್ರಮಮೇವ the ancient ashram, ಶ್ರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ I will seek shelter.

Not very far from here stands an ancient ashram in a lovely forest abounding in roots and fruits and I with my companions will seek shelter there.
ಖರಸ್ತ್ವಯ್ಯಪಿ ಚಾಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪುರಾ ತಾತ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ.

ಸಹಾಸ್ಮಾಭಿರಿತೋ ಗಚ್ಛ ಯದಿ ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.116.21৷৷


ತಾತ O dear child!, ಖರಃ Khara, ತ್ವಯ್ಯಪಿ ಚ with you also, ಅಯುಕ್ತಮ್ improperly, ಪುರಾ ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ behaves at the outset, ಬುದ್ಧಿ: ಪ್ರವರ್ತತೇ ಯದಿ if you so like, ಇತಃ from here, ಅಸ್ಮಾಭಿಃ ಸಹ along with us, ಗಚ್ಛ you may go.

Dear child, Khara will also misbehave with you as usual. (Therefore), if you so decide you may come along with us.
ಸಕಲತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಸನ್ದೇಹೋ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಯತ್ತಸ್ಯ ರಾಘವ.

ಸಮರ್ಥಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಹಿ ಸತೋ ವಾಸೋ ದುಃಖಮಿಹಾದ್ಯ ತೇ৷৷2.116.22৷৷


ರಾಘವ O Rama!, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಯತ್ತಸ್ಯ since for a man, ಸಮರ್ಥಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಹಿ ಸತಃ even though
capable, ಸಕಲತ್ರಸ್ಯ a man accompanied by his wife, ತೇ to you, ಸನ್ದೇಹಃ doubtful, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಇಹ here, ವಾಸಃ living, ದುಃಖಮ್ is painful.

O Rama, even though you are always vigilant and capable in all possible ways to defend youself, a doubt arises in our mind. It is perilous for you to live here with your wife.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತವನ್ತಂ ಸ್ತಂರಾಮ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಸ್ತಪಸ್ವಿನಮ್.

ನ ಶಶಾಕೋತ್ತರೈರ್ವಾಕ್ಯೈರವರೋದ್ಧುಂ ಸಮುತ್ಸುಕಮ್৷৷2.116.23৷৷


ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಃ son of a king, ರಾಮ Rama, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತವನ್ತಮ್ saying this, ಸಮುತ್ಸುಕಮ್ anxious, ತಂ ತಪಸ್ವಿನಮ್ that sage, ಉತ್ತರೈಃ in the form of a reply, ವಾಕ್ಯೈಃ by words, ಅವರೋದ್ಧುಮ್ to hold him back, ನ ಶಶಾಕ was unable.

It was not possible for prince Rama to hold back by mere words that ascetic who was saying like this and was anxious to quit the hermitage.
ಅಭಿನನ್ದ್ಯ ಸಮಾಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯ ಸಮಾಧಾಯ ಚ ರಾಘವಮ್.

ಸ ಜಗಾಮಾಶ್ರಮಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಕುಲೈಃ ಕುಲಪತಿಸ್ಸಹ৷৷2.116.24৷৷


ಸಃ ಕುಲಪತಿಃ that chief of ascetics, ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಅಭಿನನ್ದ್ಯ having greeted, ಸಮಾಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯ having taken leave, ಸಮಾಧಾಯ having convinced, ಕುಲೈಸ್ಸಹ along with his group, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ after abandoning, ಜಗಾಮ went.

The leader of the group quit the hermitage along with his companions after paying respect to Rama, convincing him and taking leave of him.
ರಾಮಃ ಸಂಸಾದ್ಯ ಋಷಿಗಣಮನುಗಮನಾದ್ದೇಶಾತ್ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ಕುಲಪತಿಮಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಋಷಿಮ್.

ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ಪ್ರೀತೈಸ್ತೈರನುಮತ ಉಪದಿಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥಃ ಪುಣ್ಯಂ ವಾಸಾಯ ಸ್ವನಿಲಯಮುಪಸಮ್ಪೇದೇ৷৷2.116.25৷৷


ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ದೇಶಾತ್ from that region, ಅನುಗಮನಾತ್ by following them for some distance, ಋಷಿಗಣಮ್ the sages, ಸಂಸಾಧ್ಯ bidding them farewell, ಕುಲಪತಿಮ್ chief of the groups,
ಋಷಿಮ್ that sage, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ having paid obeisance, ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ properly, ಪ್ರೀತೈಃ by the pleased, ತೈಃ by them, ಅನುಮತಃ having been consented, ಉಪದಿಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥಃ having grasped their instruction, ವಾಸಾಯ to reside, ಪುಣ್ಯಮ್ holy, ಸ್ವಂ ನಿಲಯಮ್ his own hermitage, ಉಪಸಮ್ಪೇದೇ approached.

Rama, followed the sages for some distance to bid them farewell. He paid obeisance to the chief of the group and having grasped the instruction of the highly pleased sages, he with their consent returned to his holy hermitage.
ಆಶ್ರಮಮೃಷಿವಿರಹಿತಂ ಪ್ರಭುಃ ಕ್ಷಣಮಪಿನ ಜಹೌ ಸ ರಾಘವಃ.

ರಾಘವಂ ಹಿ ಸತತಮನುಗತಾ ಸ್ತಾಪಸಾಶ್ಚಾರ್ಷಚರಿತ ಧೃತಗುಣಾಃ৷৷2.116.26৷৷


ಪ್ರಭುಃ the lord, ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that Rama, ಋಷಿವಿರಹಿತಮ್ deserted by the sages, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಕ್ಷಣಮಪಿ for a moment also, ನ ಜಹೌ did not leave, ಆರ್ಷಚರಿತೇ following the tradition of sages, ಧೃತಗುಣಾಃ fixed in many virtues, ತಾಪಸಾಶ್ಚ even the sages, ಸತತಮ್ always, ರಾಘವಮ್ to Rama, ಅನುಗತಾಃ ಹಿ followed remained.

Lord Rama, did not leave that hermitage deserted by the sages even for a moment. Those who had adopted the traditions of the sages and had acquired many virtues followed Rama.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಷೋಡಶೋತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ৷৷
Thus ends the hundredsixteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
