[Rama and Sita depart from Chitrakuta --- meet sage Atri and Anasuya.]

ರಾಘವ ಸ್ತ್ವಥ ಯಾತೇಷು ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್.

ನ ತತ್ರಾರೋಚಯದ್ವಾಸಂ ಕಾರಣೈರ್ಬಹುಭಿಸ್ತದಾ৷৷2.117.1৷৷


ಅಥ then, ರಾಘವಸ್ತು as for Rama, ತಪಸ್ವಿಷು ascetics, ಯಾತೇಷು when departed, ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ thinking over, ಬಹುಭಿಃ for many, ಕಾರಣೈಃ reasons, ತದಾ then, ತತ್ರ there, ವಾಸಮ್ to reside, ನಾರೋಚಯತ್ did not like.

When the ascetics had departed, Rama thought over the matter well and did not like to reside there for many reasons.
ಇಹ ಮೇ ಭರತೋ ದೃಷ್ಟೋ ಮಾತರಶ್ಚ ಸನಾಗರಾಃ.

ಸಾ ಚ ಮೇ ಸ್ಮೃತಿರನ್ವೇತಿ ತಾನ್ನಿತ್ಯಮನುಶೋಚತಃ৷৷2.117.2৷৷


ಮೇ to me, ಇಹ here, ಭರತಃ Bharata, ದೃಷ್ಟಃ has been seen, ಸನಾಗರಾಃ with the citzens of Ayodhya, ಮಾತರಶ್ಚ mothers also, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ತಾನ್ about them, ಅನುಶೋಚತಃ filled with grief, ಮೇ to me, ಸಾ ಸ್ಮೃತಿಃ ಚ that memory, ಅನ್ವೇತಿ is chasing.

It is here that Bharata, mothers along with citizens of Ayodhya have visited me. That memory soaked with grief is chasing me.
ಸ್ಕನ್ಧಾವಾರನಿವೇಶೇನ ತೇನ ತಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ.

ಹಯಹಸ್ತಿಕರೀಷೈಶ್ಚ ಉಪಮರ್ದಃ ಕೃತೋ ಭೃಶಮ್৷৷2.117.3৷৷


ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ magnanimous, ತಸ್ಯ Bharata's, ತೇನ by that, ಸ್ಕನ್ಧಾವಾರನಿವೇಶೇನ with the encampment of army, ಹಯಹಸ್ತಿಕರೀಷೈಶ್ಚ with the dung of horses and elephants, ಭೃಶಮ್ exceedingly, ಉಪಮರ್ಥಃ dirty, ಕೃತಃ has been made.

Due to the encampment of the army of the magnanimous Bharata (here), this place has been filled with the dung of horses and elephants and made exceedingly dirty.
ತಸ್ಮಾದನ್ಯತ್ರ ಗಚ್ಛಾಮ ಇತಿ ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಪ್ರಾತಿಷ್ಠತ ಸ ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಚ ಸಙ್ಗತಃ৷৷2.117.4৷৷


ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ therefore, ಅನ್ಯತ್ರ to some other place, ಗಚ್ಛಾಮ let us go, ಇತಿ thus, ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ having resolved, ಸಃ that, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ವೈದೇಹ್ಯಾ with Sita, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ with Lakshmana, ಸಙ್ಗತಃ
accompanied by, ಪ್ರಾತಿಷ್ಠತ set forth.

We shall, therefore, go to some other place, having resolved thus, Rama accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana set forth.
ಸೋತ್ರೇರಾಶ್ರಮಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ತಂ ವವನ್ದೇ ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ.

ತಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಭಗವಾನತ್ರಿಃ ಪುತ್ರವತ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪದ್ಯತ৷৷2.117.5৷৷


ಮಹಾಯಶಾಃ illustrious one, ಸಃ ರಾಮಃ that Rama, ಅತ್ರೇಃ Atri's, ಆಶ್ರಮಮ್ hermitage, ಆಸಾದ್ಯ having reached, ತಮ್ to that sage, ವವನ್ದೇ prostrated, ಭಗವಾನ್ the revered, ಅತ್ರಿಃ Atri, ಅಪಿ also, ತಂ him as well, ಪುತ್ರವತ್ like a son, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪದ್ಯತ received.

Having reached the hermitage of the revered sage Atri, illustrious Rama prostrated before him and Atri also received him as his son.
ಸ್ವಯಮಾತಿಥ್ಯಮಾದಿಶ್ಯ ಸರ್ವಮನ್ಯತ್ಸುಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್.

ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಂ ಚ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಂ ಸೀತಾಂ ಚ ಸಮಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯತ್৷৷2.117.6৷৷


(ಅಸ್ಯ of Rama), ಸುಸತ್ಕೃತಮ್ rendered befitting hospitality, ಸರ್ವಮ್ in all ways, ಆತಿಥ್ಯಮ್ hospitality, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಆದಿಶ್ಯ ಚ having ordered, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮ್ highly virtuous, ಸೀತಾಂ ಚ Sita, ಸೌಮಿತ್ರಿಂ ಚ also Lakshmana, ಸಮಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯತ್ treated with kind words.

That sage Atri himself extended to Rama the hospitality befitting him in all possible ways and treated Lakshmana and highly virtuous Sita with kind words.
ಪತ್ನೀಂ ಚ ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಂ ವೃದ್ಧಾಮಾಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ ಸತ್ಕೃತಾಮ್.

ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಾಮಾಸ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಹಿತೇ ರತಃ৷৷2.117.7৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಃ knower of the ways of righteousness, ಸರ್ವಭೂತಹಿತೇ in the welfare of all beings, ರತಃ engaged, ಸಮನುಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಮ್ who had just come there, ಸತ್ಕೃತಾಮ್ revered by all, ವೃದ್ಧಾಮ್ aged, ಪತ್ನೀ ಚ
his wife also, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ called out, ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯಾಮಾಸ said kind words.

Conversant in the ways of righteousness and eagaged in the welfate of all beings, sage Atri called out his aged wife who is revered by all and spoke kind words to her.
ಆನಸೂಯಾಂ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಂ ತಾಪಸೀಂ ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್

ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಣೀಷ್ವ ವೈದೇಹೀಮಬ್ರವೀದೃಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ.

ರಾಮಾಯ ಚಾಚಚಕ್ಷೇ ತಾಂ ತಾಪಸೀಂ ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್৷৷2.117.8৷৷


ಋಷಿಸತ್ತಮಃ excellent among the sages (Atri), ವೈದೇಹೀಮ್ Sita, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಣೀಷ್ವ receive, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮ್ highly virtuous, ತಾಪಸೀಮ್ female ascetic, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್ who adheres to righteousness, ಅನಸೂಯಾಮ್ to Anasuya, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್ who followed the ways of righteousness, ತಾಂ ತಾಪಸೀಮ್ about his ascetic wife Anasuya, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಆಚಚಕ್ಷೇ ಚ related.

Atri, who was excellent among the sages said to his ascetic wife who was highly virtuous and an adherent of righteousness, Welcome Sita. Thereafter, he related to Rama a story about his asetic wife who follows the ways of righteousness.
ದಶ ವರ್ಷಾಣ್ಯನಾವೃಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ದಗ್ಧೇ ಲೋಕೇ ನಿರನ್ತರಮ್৷৷2.117.9৷৷

ಯಯಾ ಮೂಲಫಲೇ ಸೃಷ್ಟೇ ಜಾಹ್ನವೀ ಚ ಪ್ರವರ್ತಿತಾ.

ಉಗ್ರೇಣ ತಪಸಾ ಯುಕ್ತಾ ನಿಯಮೈಶ್ಚಾಪ್ಯಲಙ್ಕೃತಾ৷৷2.117.10৷৷

ದಶ ವರ್ಷ ಸಹಾಸ್ರಾಣಿ ತಯಾ ತಪ್ತಂ ಮಹತ್ತಪಃ.

ಅನಸೂಯಾ ವ್ರತೈ ಸ್ಸ್ನಾತಾ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೂಹಾಶ್ಚ ನಿವರ್ತಿತಾಃ৷৷2.117.11৷৷

ದೇವಕಾರ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ಚ ಯಯಾ ಸನ್ತ್ವರಮಾಣಯಾ.

ದಶರಾತ್ರಂ ಕೃತಾ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಸ್ಸೇಯಂ ಮಾತೇವ ತೇನಘ৷৷2.117.12৷৷


ಅನಘ O blameless one (Rama), ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ದಶವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ten years, ಅನಾವೃಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ by
drought, ನಿರನ್ತರಮ್ constantly, ದಗ್ಧೇ devastated, ಯಯಾ by whom, ಮೂಲಫಲೇ roots and fruits, ಸೃಷ್ಟೇ were created, ಜಾಹ್ನವೀ ಚ Ganga, ಪ್ರವರ್ತಿತಾ caused to flow, ಉಗ್ರೇಣ rigid, ತಪಸಾ with
mortifications, ಯುಕ್ತಾ engaged, ನಿಯಮೈಶ್ಚ ಅಪಿ with self-imposed religious observances, ಅಲಙ್ಕೃತಾ decorated, ಯಯಾ by whom, ದಶವರ್ಷಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ for ten thousand years, ಮಹತ್ severe, ತಪಃ asceticism, ತಪ್ತಮ್ was practised, ದೇವಕಾರ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಮ್ for the sake of gods, ಸನ್ತ್ವರಮಾಣಯಾ by her eagerly, ಯಯಾ by whom, ಪ್ರತ್ಯೂಹಾಂ impediments, ನಿವರ್ತಿತಾಃ have been averted, ದಶರಾತ್ರಂ ten nights, ರಾತ್ರಿಃ as night, ಕೃತಾ was converted, ಸಾ such, ವ್ರತೈಃ ಸ್ನಾತಾ bathed in her vow, ಇಯಮ್ ಅನಸೂಯಾ this Anasuya, ತೇ to you, ಮಾತೇವ like a mother.

O blameless one (Rama), once this world was consecutively ravaged by drought for ten years. It was the virtuous Anasuya who created roots and fruits and caused Ganga to flow. She was engaged in severe mortifications and self-imposed religious observances. She practised severe asceticism for ten thousand years bathed in her vows. Solicited on behalf of the gods, she removed all impediments and converted ten nights into one. She is like a your mother to you.
ತಾಮಿಮಾಂ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಂ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ್ಯಾಂ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್

ಅಭಿಗಚ್ಛತು ವೈದೇಹೀ ವೃದ್ಧಾಮಕ್ರೋಧನಾಂ ಸದಾ.

ಅನಸೂಯೇತಿ ಯಾ ಲೋಕೇ ಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಮಾಗತಾ৷৷2.117.13৷৷


ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಾಮ್ for all beings, ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ್ಯಾಮ್ worthy of adoration, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ illustrious lady, ವೃದ್ಧಾಮ್ aged, ಸದಾ always, ಅಕ್ರೋಧನಾಮ್ free from anger, ತಾಮ್ to such a woman, ಇಮಾಮ್ this Anasuya, ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಅಭಿಗಚ್ಛತು let her approach, ಯಾ who, ಕರ್ಮಭಿಃ with deeds, ಆನಸೂಯೇತಿ as Anasuya, ಖ್ಯಾತಿಮ್ renown, ಆಗತಾ has acquired.

'She is renowned throughout this world for her deeds as Anasuya, (one who is free from anger). Aged, illustrious she is free frm anger, worthy of adoration by all beings. Let Sita approach her'.
ಏವಂ ಬ್ರುವಾಣಂ ತಮೃಷಿಂ ತಥೇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಸೀತಾಮುವಾಚ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಮಿದಂ ವಚನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.117.14৷৷


ಸಃ ರಾಘವಃ that Rama, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಬ್ರುವಾಣಮ್ speaking, ತಮ್ ಋಷಿಮ್ that sage, ತಥೇತಿ be it
so, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಮ್ wise in the ways of righteousness, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ excellent, ಇದಂ ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

Hearing those words of the sage, Rama said be it so and said to righteous Sita these choice words.
ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಿ! ಶ್ರುತಮಿದಂ ಮುನೇರಸ್ಯ ಸಮೀರಿತಮ್.

ಶ್ರೇಯೋರ್ಥಮಾತ್ಮನಶ್ಶೀಘ್ರಮಭಿಗಚ್ಛ ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.117.15৷৷


ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಿ! O princess (Sita), ಅಸ್ಯ ಮುನೇಃ of this sage, ಇದಂ ಸಮೀರಿತಮ್ this saying, ಶ್ರುತಮ್ has been heard, ಆತ್ಮನಃ for your, ಶ್ರೇಯೋರ್ಥಮ್ for your welfare, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ without delay, ತಪಸ್ವಿನೀಮ್ ascetic, ಅಭಿಗಚ್ಛ you may approach.

O princess, you have heard the message of the sage. Without delay approach the ascetic (Anasuya) for your welfare.
ಸೀತಾ ತ್ವೇತದ್ವಚಶ್ಶೃತ್ವಾ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ಹಿತೈಷಿಣಃ.

ತಾಮತ್ರಿಪನ್ತೀಂ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಮಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ৷৷2.117.16৷৷


ಮೈಥಿಲೀ daughter of the king of Mithila, ಸೀತಾ ತು Sita, ಹಿತೈಷಿಣಃ wishing her welfare, ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಏತದ್ವಚಃ words, ಶೃತ್ವಾ hearing, ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾಮ್ knower of righteousness, ತಾಮ್ to that, ಅತ್ರಿಪತ್ನೀಮ್ wife of Atri (Devi Anasuya), ಅಭಿಚಕ್ರಾಮ circumamabulated in reverence.

Having heard the words of Rama, intended for her welfare, Sita, daughter of the king of Mithila, approached the consort of Atri (Devi Anasuya), knower of righteousness, and reverently circumambulated her.
ಶಿಥಿಲಾಂ ವಲಿತಾಂ ವೃದ್ಧಾಂ ಜರಾಪಾಣ್ಡುರಮೂರ್ಧಜಾಮ್.

ಸತತಂ ವೇಪಮಾನಾಙ್ಗೀಂ ಪ್ರವಾತೇ ಕದಲೀಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷ 2.117.17৷৷

ತಾಂ ತು ಸೀತಾ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮನಸೂಯಾಂ ಪತಿವ್ರತಾಮ್.

ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯದವ್ಯಗ್ರಾ ಸ್ವಂನಾಮ ಸಮುದಾಹರತ್৷৷2.117.18৷৷


ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಶಿಥಿಲಾಮ್ feeble, ವಲಿತಾಮ್ with wrinkles, ವೃದ್ಧಾಮ್ old, ಜರಾಪಾಣ್ಡುರಮೂರ್ಧಜಾಮ್ hair turned grey due to old age, ಪ್ರವಾತೇ in stormy wind, ಕದಲೀಂ ಯಥಾ like a plantain tree, ಸತತಮ್ constantly, ವೇಪಮಾನಾಙ್ಗೀಮ್ her body trembling, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮ್ highly fortunate, ಪತಿವ್ರತಾಮ್ chaste woman, ತಾಮ್ ಅನಸೂಯಾಮ್ that Anasuya, ಅವ್ಯಗ್ರಾ without haste, ಅಭ್ಯವಾದಯತ್ made obeisance, ಸ್ವನಾಮ her name, ಸಮುದಾಹರತ್ pronounced.

Highly chaste and fortunate Anasuya was very old and feeble. Her skin was wrinkled and her hair turned grey due to old age. Her body was constantly trembling like a plantain tree in a stormy wind. Pronouncing her name to such Anasuya, Sita made obeisance to her with utmost concentration.
ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಚ ವೈದೇಹೀ ತಾಪಸೀಂ ತಾಮನಿನ್ದಿತಾಮ್.

ಬದ್ಧಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛದನಾಮಯಮ್৷৷2.117.19৷৷


ವೈದೇಹೀ Sita, ಅನಿನ್ದಿತಾಮ್ blameless, ತಾಂ ತಾಪಸೀಮ್ to that asceetic (Anasuya), ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ after paying her homage, ಬದ್ಧಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ folding the palms, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ delighted lady, ಅನಾಮಯಮ್ well-being, ಪರ್ಯಪೃಚ್ಛತ್ enquired.

Sita offered her obeisance to the blameless ascetic, Anasuya, folding her palms and enquired of her well-being in delight.
ತತಸ್ಸೀತಾಂ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತಾಂ ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್.

ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯನ್ತ್ಯಬ್ರವೀದ್ಧೃಷ್ಟಾ ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ಧರ್ಮಮವೇಕ್ಷಸೇ৷৷2.117.20৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾಮ್ glorious lady, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್ engaged in righteous acts, ತಾಂ ಸೀತಾಮ್ that
Sita, ಸಾನ್ತ್ವಯನ್ತೀ consoling, ಹೃಷ್ಟಾ in delight, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ fortunately, ಧರ್ಮಮ್ rightful duty, ಅವೇಕ್ಷಸೇ you are observing.

Anasuya was delighted to see the glorious Sita who was always engaged in righteous acts and said in kind words, You are fortunate. You are observing your rightful duty.
ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಜ್ಞಾತಿಜನಂ ಸೀತೇ ಮಾನಮೃದ್ಧಂ ಚ ಭಾಮಿನಿ.

ಅವರುದ್ಧಂ ವನೇ ರಾಮಂ ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ತ್ವಮನುಗಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.117.21৷৷


ಭಾಮಿನಃ ಸೀತೇ O noble Sita, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ by the grace of heaven, ಜ್ಞಾತಿಜನಮ್ your kins, ಮಾನಮ್ pride, ಋದ್ಧಂ ಚ wealth, ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ after forsaking, ವನೇ in the forest, ಅವರುದ್ಧಮ್ confined, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನುಗಚ್ಛಸಿ you are following.

O noble Sita, by the grace of heaven you are following Rama, forsaking your kinsmen and wealth and confining yourself to the forest.
ನಗರಸ್ಥೋ ವನಸ್ಥೋ ವಾ ಪಾಪೋ ವಾ ಯದಿ ವಾ ಶುಭಃ.

ಯಾಸಾಂ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಪ್ರಿಯೋ ಭರ್ತಾ ತಾಸಾಂ ಲೋಕಾ ಮಹೋದಯಾಃ৷৷2.117.22৷৷


ಯಾಸಾಮ್ those, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ women, ನಗರಸ್ಥಃ in the city, ವನಸ್ಥೋ ವಾ or in the forest, ಪಾಪೋ ವಾ or sinful, ಯದಿ ವಾ or, ಶುಭಃ virtuous, ಭರ್ತಾ husband, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ dear, ತಾಸಾಮ್ for them, ಮಹೋದಯಾಃ highly promising, ಲೋಕಃ worlds.

One who is devoted to her husband, whether he be in the city or in the forest, whether he is sinful or virtuous, will attain the most prosperous worlds.
ದುಶ್ಶೀಲಃ ಕಾಮವೃತ್ತೋ ವಾ ಧನೈರ್ವಾ ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮಾರ್ಯಸ್ವಭಾವಾನಾಂ ಪರಮಂ ದೈವತಂ ಪತಿಃ৷৷2.117.23৷৷


ಆರ್ಯಸ್ವಭಾವಾನಾಮ್ of noble nature, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಮ್ for women, ದುಶ್ಶೀಲಃ a man of bad character, ಕಾಮವೃತ್ತೋ ವಾ or licentious, ಧನೈಃ with riches, ಪರಿವರ್ಜಿತೋ ವಾ or devoid of, ಪತಿಃ husband, ಪರಮಮ್ is supreme, ದೈವತಮ್ is deity.

For a woman of noble nature her husband, whether he be licentious or of bad character or devoid of riches, is her supreme lord.
ನಾತೋ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಬಾನ್ಧವಂ ವಿಮೃಶನ್ತ್ಯಹಮ್.

ಸರ್ವತ್ರ ಯೋಗ್ಯಂ ವೈದೇಹಿ! ತಪಃ ಕೃತಮಿವಾವ್ಯಯಮ್৷৷2.117.24৷৷


ವೈದೇಹಿ Sita, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಸರ್ವತ್ರ all over, ವಿಮೃಶನ್ತೀ reflecting, ಕೃತಮ್ performed, ಅವ್ಯಯಮ್ imperishable, ಯೋಗ್ಯಮ್ befitting, ತಪಃ ಇವ like austerities, ಅತಃ more than husband, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟಮ್ better, ಬಾನ್ಧವಮ್ relation, ನ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ I do not see.

O Sita, on reflection I know of none who is a better friend than the husband. He, like an imperishable penance, once acquired is never lost.
ನ ತ್ವೇವಮವಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ ಗುಣದೋಷಮಸತ್ತ್ಸ್ರಿಯಃ.

ಕಾಮವಕ್ತವ್ಯಹೃದಯಾ ಭರ್ತೃನಾಥಾಶ್ಚರನ್ತಿ ಯಾಃ৷৷2.117.25৷৷


ಯಾಃ those women, ಕಾಮವಕ್ತವ್ಯಹೃದಯಾಃ with minds overpowerd by carnal desires, ಭರ್ತೃನಾಥಾಃ as lords of their husbands, ಚರನ್ತಿ ranging at will, ಅಸತ್ತ್ಸ್ರಿಯಃ such wicked women, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಗುಣದೋಷಮ್ vice and virtue, ನ ಅವಗಚ್ಛನ್ತಿ do not understand.

Those wicked women whose minds are overpowered by carnal desires, ranging at will as lords of their husbands, do not understand about vice and virtue.
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತ್ಯ ಯಶಶ್ಚೈವ ಧರ್ಮಭ್ರಂಶಂ ಚ ಮೈಥಿಲಿ.

ಅಕಾರ್ಯವಶಮಾಪನ್ನಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋ ಯಾಃ ಖಲು ತದ್ವಿಧಾಃ৷৷2.117.26৷৷


ಮೈಥಿಲಿ O Sita, ತದ್ವಿಧಾಃ such, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಅಕಾರ್ಯವಶಮ್ the influence of unworthy acts, ಆಪನ್ನಃ having obtained, ಅಯಶಶ್ಚ infamy, ಪಾಪ್ನುವನ್ತಿ are obtaining, ಧರ್ಮಭ್ರಂಶಂ ಚ dislodged from the state of righteousness.

O Sita, those women under the control of unworthy acts are dislodged from the path
of righteousness and get infamy.
ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾಸ್ತು ಗುಣೈರ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ದೃಷ್ಟ ಲೋಕ ಪರಾವರಾಃ.

ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯ ಸ್ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇ ಚರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಯಥಾ ಧರ್ಮಕೃತಸ್ತಥಾ৷৷2.117.27৷৷


ಗುಣೈಃ with virtues, ಯುಕ್ತಾಃ endowed with, ದೃಷ್ಟಲೋಕಪರಾವರಾ who can distinguish between good and bad in the world, ತ್ವದ್ವಿಧಾಃ like you, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಸ್ತು women, ಧರ್ಮಕೃತಃ doing virtuous deeds, ಯಥಾ
as to how, ತಥಾ that way, ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇ in heaven, ಚರಿಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ will range about.

Women like you who are endowed with virtues and can distinguish between good and bad in this world, like those who perform virtuous deeds, will move about in heaven.
ತದೇವಮೇನಂ ತ್ವಮನುವ್ರತಾ ಸತೀ ಪತಿವ್ರತಾನಾಂ ಸಮಯಾನುವರ್ತಿನೀ.

ಭವ ಸ್ವಭರ್ತು ಸ್ಸಹಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀ ಯಶಶ್ಚ ಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ ತತ ಸ್ಸಮಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ৷৷2.117.28৷৷


ತತ್ for that reason, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಏನಮ್ this (Rama), ಅನುವ್ರತಾ ಸತೀ being devoted to your husband, ಪತಿವ್ರತಾನಾಮ್ of chaste women, ಸಮಯಾನುವರ್ತಿನೀ following at all times, ಸ್ವಭರ್ತುಃ to your husband, ಸಹಧರ್ಮಚರಿಣೀ ಭವ be a virtuous wife, ತತಃ from that, ಯಶಶ್ಚ renown, ಧರ್ಮಂ ಚ and virtue, ಸಮಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ will obtain.

Therefore, always following your husband, upholding the traditions of chaste women, carrying out worthy and timely duties, be a virtuous wife to your husband. You will thus obtain renown and virtue.
