[Sita relates the story of her marriage to Anasuya --- Anasuya bestows Sita with divine gifts.]

ಸಾತ್ವೇವಮುಕ್ತಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ ಅನಸೂಯಾನಸೂಯಯಾ.

ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜ್ಯ ವಚೋ ಮನ್ದಂ ಪ್ರವಕ್ತುಮುಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ৷৷2.118.1৷৷


ಅನಸೂಯಾ one who is free from malice, ಸಾ ವೈದೇಹೀ that Vaidehi, ಅನಸೂಯಯಾ by Anasuya, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಾ when addressed, ವಚಃ those words, ಪ್ರತಿಪೂಜ್ಯ having worshipped, ಮನ್ದಮ್ in
a gentle tone, ಪ್ರವಕ್ತುಮ್ to tell, ಉಪಚಕ್ರಮೇ commenced.

When Anasuya thus addressed Vaidehi who is free from any malice, she worshipped Anasuya and started speaking in a gentle tone.
ನೈತದಾಶ್ಚರ್ಯಮಾರ್ಯಾಯಾ ಯನ್ಮಾಂ ತ್ವಮಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ.

ವಿದಿತನ್ತು ಮಮಾಪ್ಯೇತದ್ಯಥಾ ನಾರ್ಯಾಃ ಪತಿರ್ಗುರುಃ৷৷2.118.2৷৷


ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಮಾಮ್ to me, ಯತ್ ಅಭಿಭಾಷಸೇ you are instructing, ಏತತ್ all this, ಆರ್ಯಾಯಾಃ for a noble lady like you, ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯಮ್ wonder, ನ not, ನಾರ್ಯಾ for a woman, ಪತಿಃ husband, ಗುರುಃ the revered one, ಯಥಾ as, ಏತತ್ all this, ಮಮಾಪಿ to me, ವಿದಿತಂ ತು also known.

It is no wonder that a noble lady like you should instruct me this way. It is known to me that a husband is a guru to his wife.
ಯದ್ಯಪ್ಯೇಷ ಭವೇದ್ಭರ್ತಾ ಮಮಾರ್ಯೇ ವೃತ್ತವರ್ಜಿತಃ.

ಅದ್ವೈಧಮುಪಚರ್ತವ್ಯಸ್ತಥಾಪ್ಯೇಷ ಮಯಾ ಭವೇತ್৷৷2.118.3৷৷


ಆರ್ಯೇ O noble lady, ಏಷಃ ಮಮ ಭರ್ತಾ my husband, ವೃತ್ತವರ್ಜಿತಃ devoid of good conduct, ಯದ್ಯಪಿ ಭವೇತ್ even if it happens, ತಥಾಪಿ even then, ಏಷಃ he, ಮಯಾ by me, ಅದ್ವೈಧಮ್ without hesitation, ಉಪಚರ್ತವ್ಯಃ should be obeyed.

O noble lady, even if my husband is devoid of good conduct, he should be obeyed without showing any hesitation.
ಕಿಂ ಪುನರ್ಯೋ ಗುಣಶ್ಲಾಘ್ಯ ಸ್ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶೋ ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ.

ಸ್ಥಿರಾನುರಾಗೋ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಾತೃವತ್ಪಿತೃವತ್ಪ್ರಿಯಃ৷৷2.118.4৷৷


ಯಃ such a man, ಗುಣಶ್ಲಾಘ್ಯಃ is worthy of applause for his virtues, ಸಾನುಕ್ರೋಶ: compassionate, ಜಿತೇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಃ subdued his senses, ಸ್ಥಿರಾನುರಾಗಃ ever affectionate, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous man, ಮಾತೃವತ್
like a mother, ಪಿತೃವತ್ like a father, ಪ್ರಿಯಃ is dear, ಕಿಂ ಪುನಃ where is the need to say.

What to speak of a husband if he is worthy of applause for his virtues, is compassionate, a subduer of the senses, righteous and ever affectionate like a mother and a father?
ಯಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಂ ವರ್ತತೇ ರಾಮಃ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ತಾಮೇವ ನೃಪನಾರೀಣಾಮನ್ಯಾಸಾಮಪಿ ವರ್ತತೇ৷৷2.118.5৷৷


ಮಹಾಬಲಃ mighty, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಕೌಸಲ್ಯಾಯಾಮ್ in Kausalya, ಯಾಂ ವೃತ್ತಿಮ್ such treatment, ವರ್ತತೇ behaves, ಅನ್ಯಾಸಾಮ್ with others, ನೃಪನಾರೀಣಾಮಪಿ consorts of the king, ತಾಮೇವ the same way, ವರ್ತತೇ behaves.

Mighty Rama shows the same behaviour and treatment towards the other consorts of the king as he does towards his own mother Kausalya.
ಸಕೃದ್ದೃಷ್ಟಾಸ್ವಪಿ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಷು ನೃಪೇಣ ನೃಪವತ್ಸಲಃ.

ಮಾತೃವದ್ವರ್ತತೇ ವೀರೋ ಮಾನಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್৷৷2.118.6৷৷


ನೃಪವತ್ಸಲಃ affectionate towards king Dasaratha, ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ one who is conversant with righteousness, ವೀರಃ heroic Rama, ನೃಪೇಣ by king, ಸಕೃತ್ only once, ದೃಷ್ಟಾಸು seen, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಷ್ವಪಿ in any woman, ಮಾನಮ್ pride, ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ setting aside, ಮಾತೃವತ್ like a mother, ವರ್ತತೇ abides.

Heroic Rama is affectionate towards king Dasaratha and is conversant with righteousness. Renouncing the sense of self-respect he honours all the women on whom his father had cast his glance even once just as his own mother.
ಆಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯಾಶ್ಚ ವಿಜನಂ ವನಮೇವಂ ಭಯಾವಹಮ್.

ಸಮಾಹಿತಂ ಮೇ ಶ್ವಶ್ರ್ವಾ ಚ ಹೃದಯೇ ತದ್ಧೃತಂ ಮಹತ್৷৷2.118.7৷৷


ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಭಯಾವಹಮ್ frightful, ವಿಜನಮ್ desolate, ವನಮ್ forest, ಆಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯಾಃ when I was coming, ಮೇ to me, ಶ್ವಶ್ವಾ by mother-in-law, ಸಮಾಹಿತಮ್ imparted, ತತ್ that, ಮಹತ್ wise
instruction, ಹೃದಯೇ in my heart, ಧೃತಮ್ is firmly grasped.

When departing for this frightful and desolate forest, the great (advice) imparted by my mother-in-law is firmly fixed in my mind.
ಪಾಣಿಪ್ರದಾನಕಾಲೇ ಚ ಯತ್ಪುರಾತ್ವಗ್ನಿ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ.

ಅನುಶಿಷ್ಟಾ ಜನನ್ಯಾಸ್ಮಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ತದಪಿ ಮೇ ಧೃತಮ್৷৷2.118.8৷৷


ಪುರಾ formerly, ಪಾಣಿಪ್ರದಾನಕಾಲೇ ಚ at the time of bestowal of my hand to Rama, ಅಗ್ನಿ ಸನ್ನಿಧೌ in the presence of sacrificial marriage fire, ಜನನ್ಯಾ by my mother, ಯತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್ that word, ಅನುಶಿಷ್ಟಾ ಆಸ್ಮಿ I have been taught, ತದಪಿ that also, ಮೇ to me, ಧೃತಮ್ hold

When I have been taught by my mother earlier, at the time of bestowal of my hand to Rama in the presence of the sacrificial fire (as witness) is etched in my mind.
ನವೀಕೃತಂ ತು ತತ್ಸರ್ವಂ ವಾಕ್ಯೈಸ್ತೇ ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಿ.

ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಣಾನ್ನಾರ್ಯಾಸ್ತಪೋ ನಾನ್ಯದ್ವಿಧೀಯತೇ৷৷2.118.9৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಿ O follower of righteous duty (Anasuya), ತೇ ವಾಕ್ಯೈಃ your words, ತತ್ ಸರ್ವಮ್ all that, ನವೀಕೃತಮ್ renewed (reminded afresh), ನಾರ್ಯಾಃ for women, ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಣಾತ್ more than obedience to her husband, ಅನ್ಯತ್ other, ತಪಃ ascetic practice, ನ ವಿಧೀಯತೇ is not laid down.

O righteous one (Anasuya), after listening to your words the instructions given by my
mother-in-law and my mother are renewed (remembered again). For a woman, no other penance is laid down (in scriptures) except service to her husband.
ಸಾವಿತ್ರೀ ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಾಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇ ಮಹೀಯತೇ.

ತಥಾವೃತ್ತಿಶ್ಚ ಯಾತಾ ತ್ವಂ ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಯಾ ದಿವಮ್৷৷2.118.10৷৷


ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಾಮ್ service to her husband, ಕೃತ್ವಾ having rendered, ಸಾವಿತ್ರೀ Savitri, ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇ in heaven, ಮಹೀಯತೇ is honoured, ತಥಾವೃತ್ತಿ: having followed the same path, ತ್ವಂ ಚ you also, ಪತಿಶುಶ್ರೂಷಯಾ through serving your husband, ದಿವಮ್ to heaven, ಯಾತಾ shall go.

Having served her husband (faithfully), Savitri is honoured in heaven. You also, by
following the same path of serving your husband, shall reach the heaven.
ವರಿಷ್ಠಾ ಸರ್ವನಾರೀಣಾಮೇಷಾ ಚ ದಿವಿ ದೇವತಾ.

ರೋಹಿಣೀ ನ ವಿನಾಚನ್ದ್ರಂ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಪಿ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.118.11৷৷


ಸರ್ವನಾರೀಣಾಮ್ among all women, ವರಿಷ್ಠಾ the very best, ದೇವತಾ goddess, ಏಷಾ ರೋಹಿಣೀ this Rohini, ದಿವಿ in the sky, ಚನ್ದ್ರಂ ವಿನಾ without the Moon, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮಪಿ even for a moment, ನ ದೃಶ್ಯತೇ is not seen.

Rohini, the very best among all women and the goddess of heaven, is never seen in the sky separated from the moon even for a moment.
ಏವಂವಿಧಾಶ್ಚ ಪ್ರವರಾಃ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯೋ ಭರ್ತೃದೃಢವ್ರತಾಃ.

ದೇವಲೋಕೇ ಮಹೀಯನ್ತೇ ಪುಣ್ಯೇನ ಸ್ವೇನ ಕರ್ಮಣಾ৷৷2.118.12৷৷


ಏವಂವಿಧಾಃ such women, ಪ್ರವರಾಃ excellent, ಭರ್ತೃದೃಢವ್ರತಾಃ firm in their vows to their husbands, ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ women, ಪುಣ್ಯೇನ by merit, ಸ್ವೇನ by their own, ಕರ್ಮಣಾ deeds, ದೇವಲೋಕೇ in the world of the gods, ಮಹೀಯನ್ತೇ are highly revered.

Execellent women such as these, firm in their vows to their husband are highly revered in the world of gods through their own meritorious deeds.
ತತೋನಸೂಯಾ ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಶ್ರುತ್ವೋಕ್ತಂ ಸೀತಯಾ ವಚಃ.

ಶಿರಸ್ಯಾಘ್ರಾಯ ಚೋವಾಚ ಮೈಥಿಲೀಂ ಹರ್ಷಯನ್ತ್ಯುತ৷৷2.118.13৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಸೀತಯಾ by Sita, ಉಕ್ತಮ್ spoken, ವಚಃ words, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ಅನಸೂಯಾ Anasuya, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಾ highly rejoiced, ಮೈಥಿಲೀಮ್ to Sita, ಶಿರಸಿ on her forehead, ಅಘ್ರಾಯ having kissed, ಹರ್ಷಯನ್ತೀ in order to make her happy, ಉವಾಚ said.

Thereafter hearing Sita's words, Anasuya affectionately kissed her forehead and said
this in order to make her happy:
ನಿಯಮೈರ್ವಿವಿಧೈರಾಪ್ತಂ ತಪೋ ಹಿ ಮಹದಸ್ತಿ ಮೇ.

ತತ್ಸಂಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ ಬಲಂ ಸೀತೇ ಛನ್ದಯೇ ತ್ವಾಂ ಶುಚಿವ್ರತೇ৷৷2.118.14৷৷


ಶುಚಿವ್ರತೇ O woman of pure conduct, ಸೀತೇ O Sita!, ವಿವಿಧೈಃ by various, ನಿಯಮೈಃ by austerities, ಆಪ್ತಮ್ obtained, ಮಹತ್ great, ತಪಃ ascetic power, ಮೇ to me, ಅಸ್ತಿ ಹಿ is there to my credit, ತತ್ ಬಲಮ್ that ascetic power, ಸಂಶ್ರಿತ್ಯ having resorted to, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಛನ್ದಯೇ I shall cause your enjoyment.

O Sita of pure conduct, I have great ascetic power obtained through practising various austerities. With its strength I shall give what you want for your enjoyment.
ಉಪಪನ್ನಂ ಮನೋಜ್ಞಂ ಚ ವಚನಂ ತವ ಮೈಥಿಲಿ.

ಪ್ರೀತಾ ಚಾಸ್ಮ್ಯುಚಿತಂ ಕಿಂ ತೇ ಕರವಾಣಿ ಬ್ರವೀಹಿ ಮೇ৷৷2.118.15৷৷


ಮೈಥಿಲಿ O Sita, ತವ ವಚನಮ್ your words, ಉಪಪನ್ನಮ್ are befitting, ಮನೋಜ್ಞಂ ಚ also pleasing, ಪ್ರೀತಾ ಆಸ್ಮಿ I am pleased, ಉಚಿತಮ್ appropriate thing, ಕಿಂ what, ತೇ to you, ಕರವಾಣಿ shall I do, ಮೇ to me, ಬ್ರವೀಹಿ tell.

O Sita, I am glad to hear your befitting and pleasing words. Tell me what appropriate thing you desire and I shall give you.
ಸ್ಯಾಸ್ತದ್ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರೂತ್ವಾ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾ ಮನ್ದವಿಸ್ಮಯಾ.

ಕೃತಮಿತ್ಯಬ್ರವೀಸ್ತೀತಾ ತಪೋಬಲಸಮನ್ವಿತಾಮ್৷৷2.118.16৷৷


ಸೀತಾ Sita, ತಸ್ಯಾಃ her, ತದ್ವಚನಮ್ those words, ಶುತ್ವಾ having heard, ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾ was surprised, ಮನ್ದವಿಸ್ಮಯಾ with a gentle smile, ತಪೋಬಲಸಮನ್ವಿತಾಮ್ endowed with ascetic power, ಕೃತಮಿತಿ has been done, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ said.

On hearing her words Sita was surprised. With a gentle smile she said, to Anasuya who was endowed with ascetic power, 'I think you have already granted me the
boons'.
ಸಾ ತ್ವೇವಮುಕ್ತಾ ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾ ತಯಾ ಪ್ರೀತತರಾಭವತ್.

ಸಫಲಂ ಚ ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷಂ ತೇ ಹನ್ತ ಸೀತೇ! ಕರೋಮ್ಯಹಮ್৷৷2.118.17৷৷


ಧರ್ಮಜ್ಞಾ knower of righteous ways, ಸಾ she (Anasuya), ತಯಾ by Sita, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಾ having been addressed, ಪ್ರೀತತರಾ ಅಭವತ್ she was immensely pleased, ಸೀತೇ O Sita, ಹನ್ತ what a joy, ಪ್ರಹರ್ಷಮ್ my delight, ತೇ to you, ಸಫಲಮ್ fruitful, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಕರೋಮಿ shall do.

When Sita said so, Anasuya who knew her righteous duty was immensely pleased. and replied, 'What a joy! I shall make the words you have spoken come true'.
ಇದಂ ದಿವ್ಯಂ ವರಂ ಮಾಲ್ಯಂ ವಸ್ತ್ರಮಾಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ.

ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗಂ ಚ ವೈದೇಹಿ ಮಹಾರ್ಹಂ ಚಾನುಲೇಪನಮ್৷৷2.118.18৷৷

ಮಯಾ ದತ್ತಮಿದಂ ಸೀತೇ ತವ ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ ಶೋಭಯೇತ್.

ಅನುರೂಪಮಸಂಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಂ ನಿತ್ಯಮೇವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.118.19৷৷


ವೈದೇಹಿ O princess of Videha, ಸೀತೇ Sita, ದಿವ್ಯಮ್ divine, ವರಮ್ best, ಇದಂ ಮಾಲ್ಯಮ್ this garland, ವಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ raiment, ಆಭರಣಾನಿ ಚ jewellery, ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗಂ ಚ fragrant unguents, ಮಹಾರ್ಹಮ್ precious, ಅನುಲೇಪನಂ ಚ ointment for anointing the body, ಮಯಾ by me, ದತ್ತಮ್ is bestowed, ಇದಮ್ all this, ತವ to your, ಗಾತ್ರಾಣಿ limbs, ಶೋಭಯೇತ್ will beautify, ನಿತ್ಯಮ್ always, ಅನುರೂಪಮ್ convenient,
ಅಸಂಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಮ್ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will never impair.

O princess of Videha, O Sita, I bestow on you this best garland of the gods, raiment, jewellery, fragrant unguents, and precious ointment for anointing your body with. All this will beautify your limbs. It is convenient (to use) and will never fade.
ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗೇಣ ದಿವ್ಯೇನ ಲಿಪ್ತಾಙ್ಗೀ ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜೇ!.

ಶೋಭಯಿಷ್ಯಸಿ ಭರ್ತಾರಂ ಯಥಾ ಶ್ರೀರ್ವಿಷ್ಣುಮವ್ಯಯಮ್৷৷2.118.20৷৷


ಜನಕಾತ್ಮಜೇ! O daughter of Janaka, ದಿವ್ಯೇ O divine lady, ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗೇಣ with fragrant unguent, ಲಿಪ್ತಾಙ್ಗೀ anointing to your body, ಶ್ರೀಃ Lakshmi, ಅವ್ಯಯಮ್ imperishable, ವಿಷ್ಣುಮ್ Vishnu, ಯಥಾ
how, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ your husband, ಶೋಭಯಿಷ್ಯಸಿ you will enhance the glory.

O daughter of Janaka, you will enhance the glory of your husband by anointing your body with this divine, fragrant unguent to your body like Lakshmi enhancing the glory of eternal Visnu.
ಸಾ ವಸ್ತ್ರಮಙ್ಗರಾಗಂ ಚ ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ ಸ್ರಜಸ್ತಥಾ.

ಮೈಥಿಲೀ ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ ಪ್ರೀತಿದಾನಮನುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.118.21৷৷


ಸಾ ಮೈಥಿಲೀ that princess from Mithila, ವಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ raiment, ಅಙ್ಗರಾಗಂ ಚ fragrant unguent, ಭೂಷಣಾನಿ jewellery, ತಥಾ and, ಸ್ರಜಃ garlands, ಅನುತ್ತಮಮ್ incomparable, ಪ್ರೀತಿದಾನಮ್ gifts of love, ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ accepted.

That princess from Mithila accepted the incomparable gifts of love, the raiment, fragrant unguents, jewellery and also the garland.
ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ ಚ ತತ್ಸೀತಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿದಾನಂ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ.

ಶ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ ತತ್ರ ಸಮುಪಾಸ್ತ ತಪೋಧನಾಮ್৷৷2.118.22৷৷


ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ illustrious lady, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ತತ್ that, ಪ್ರೀತಿದಾನಮ್ gifts of love, ಪ್ರತಿಗೃಹ್ಯ having accepted, ಶ್ಲಿಷ್ಟಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಾ with hands folded like a dish in reverence, ತತ್ರ there, ತಪೋಧನಾಮ್
ascetic, ಸಮುಪಾಸ್ತ sat beside her.

Illustrious Sita accepted the gifts of love and with palms folded in reverence sat beside her, an ascetic.
ತಥಾ ಸೀತಾಮುಪಾಸೀನಾಮನಸೂಯಾ ದೃಢವ್ರತಾ.

ವಚನಂ ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಾರೇಭೇ ಕಾಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪ್ರಿಯಕಥಾಮನು৷৷2.118.23৷৷


ದೃಢವ್ರತಾ firm in her vows, ಅನಸೂಯಾ Anasuya, ತಥಾ in that way, ಉಪಾಸೀನಾಮ್ sitting, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita,
ಕಾಂಚಿತ್ certain, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಥಾಮನು relating to a dear tale (that was close to her heart), ಪ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to ask, ವಚನಮ್ these words, ಆರೇಭೇ commenced.

Anasuya who was firm in her vows commenced to ask Sita this way about a certain tale (that was close to her heart).
ಸ್ವಯಂ ವರೇ ಕಿಲ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ತ್ವಮನೇನ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಾ.

ರಾಘವೇಣೇತಿ ಮೇ ಸಿತೇ! ಕಥಾ ಶ್ರುತಿಮುಪಾಗತಾ৷৷2.118.24৷৷


ಸೀತೇ! O Sita!, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಾ by the illustrious one, ರಾಘವೇಣ by Rama, ಸ್ವಯಂವರೇ in the swayamvara (the choice of the husband by a princess in the public), ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಕಿಲ are obtained, ಇತಿ ಕಥಾ so runs the story, ಮೇ my, ಶ್ರುತಿಮ್ my ear, ಉಪಾಗತಾ reached.

O Sita!, I have heard that you have been won by the illustrious Rama in the swayamvara. At least that is the story which reached my ears.

ಮೈಥಿಲಿ! O daughter of the king of Mithila, ತಾಮ್ that story, ವಿಸ್ತರೇಣ in detail, ಶ್ರೋತುಮ್ to hear, ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I wish, ತತ್ that one, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಯಥಾನುಭೂತಮ್ as you experienced, ಕಾತ್ಸ್ನ್ಯೇನ entirely, ವಕ್ತುಮ್ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ you should tell me.

ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಾ addressed, ಸಾ ಸೀತಾ that Sita, ತತಃ then, ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಮ್ ಇತಿ listen, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ತಾಮ್ that, ಧರ್ಮಚಾರಿಣೀಮ್ to one who practiced righteousness, ತಾಂ ಕಥಾಮ್ that story, ಕಥಯಾಮಾಸ related.

'Listen' said Sita, thus addressed, and began relating the story to Anasuya, a performer of austerities.
ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪತಿರ್ವೀರೋ ಜನಕೋ ನಾಮ ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್.

ಕ್ಷತ್ರಧರ್ಮೇ ಹ್ಯಭಿರತೋ ನ್ಯಾಯತಶ್ಶಾಸ್ತಿ ಮೇದಿನೀಮ್৷৷2.118.27৷৷


ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪತಿಃ king of Mithila, ವೀರಃ a warrior, ಧರ್ಮವಿತ್ one conversant wtih righteousness, ಜನಕೋ ನಾಮ by name Janaka, ಕ್ಷತ್ರಧರ್ಮೇ in the duties of kshatriya, ಅಭಿರತಃ engaged, ನ್ಯಾಯತಃ rightly, ಮೇದಿನೀಮ್ this earth, ಶಾಸ್ತಿ was ruling.

There is a king in Mithila, Janaka by name. He is heroic and is conversant with righteousness. Engaged in the duties of a kshatriya, he is rules the earth with justice.
ತಸ್ಯ ಲಾಙ್ಗಲಹಸ್ತನ್ಯ ಕರ್ಷತಃ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್.

ಅಹಂ ಕಿಲೋತ್ಥಿತಾ ಭಿತ್ವಾ ಜಗತೀಂ ನೃಪತೇಸ್ಸುತಾ৷৷2.118.28৷৷


ತಸ್ಯ his, ಲಾಙ್ಗಲಹಸ್ತಸ್ಯ of a man holding a plough in hand, ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್ the circular plot of land for performing sacrifice, ಕರ್ಷತಃ while ploughing, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನೃಪತೇಃ king's, ಸುತಾ as daughter, ಜಗತೀಮ್ the earth, ಭಿತ್ವಾ breaking, ಉತ್ಥಿತಾ ಕಿಲ arose, as they say.

When he was ploughing the circular plot of land for performing a sacrifice, it is said I emerged from the earth by breaking it and therefore I became his dauhghter.
ಸ ಮಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ನರಪತಿರ್ಮುಷ್ಟಿವಿಕ್ಷೇಪತತ್ಪರಃ.

ಪಾಂಸುಕುಣ್ಠಿತಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗೀಂ ಜನಕೋ ವಿಸ್ಮಿತೋಭವತ್৷৷2.118.29৷৷


ಮುಷ್ಟಿವಿಕ್ಷೇಪತತ್ಪರಃ eager to sow fistfuls of seeds, ನರಪತಿಃ king, ಸಃ ಜನಕಃ that Janaka, ಪಾಂಸುಕುಣ್ಠಿತಸರ್ವಾಙ್ಗೀಂ with my body covered with dust, ಮಾಮ್ me, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ವಿಸ್ಮಿತಃ ಅಭವತ್ was astonished.

Engaged in sowing fistfuls of seeds, king Janaka found me covered with dust and
was astonished.
ಅನಪತ್ಯೇನ ಚ ಸ್ನೇಹಾದಙ್ಕಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ಚ ಸ್ವಯಮ್.

ಮಮೇಯಂ ತನಯೇತ್ಯುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಸ್ನೇಹೋ ಮಯಿ ನಿಪಾತಿತಃ৷৷2.118.30৷৷


ಅನಪತ್ಯೇನ being childless, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ himself, ಸ್ನೇಹಾತ್ out of affection, ಅಙ್ಕಮ್ in his lap, ಆರೋಪ್ಯ placing, ಇಯಮ್ this one, ಮಮ ತನಯಾ is my daughter, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ಮಯಿ in me, ಸ್ನೇಹಃ affection, ನಿಪಾತಿತಃ showered

As he had no children, he, on his own accord, lifted me up and placing me on his lap, saying, This is my daughter, he began showering (lots of) love on me.
ಅನ್ತರಿಕ್ಷೇ ಚ ವಾಗುಕ್ತಾಪ್ರತಿಮಾಮಾನುಷೀ ಕಿಲ.

ಏವಮೇತನ್ನರಪತೇ! ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ತನಯಾ ತವ৷৷2.118.31৷৷


ನರಪತೇ! O king, ಏತತ್ this, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಅಪ್ರತಿಮಾ incomparable, ಅಮಾನುಷೀ not a human being, ತವ to you, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ by right, ತನಯಾ daughter, ಅನ್ತರಿಕ್ಷೇ from out of the sky, ವಾಕ್ word, ಉಕ್ತಾ was uttered.

'O king, she is an incomparable divine being. By right she is your daughter'. These were the words (Janaka) heard from out of the sky.
ತತಃ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಪಿತಾ ಮೇ ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪಃ.

ಅವಾಪ್ತೋ ವಿಪುಲಾಂ ಬುದ್ಧಿಂ ಮಾಮವಾಪ್ಯ ನರಾಧಿಪಃ৷৷2.118.32৷৷


ತತಃ thereafter, ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ righteous, ನರಾಧಿಪ: the king, ಮಿಥಿಲಾಧಿಪಃ the lord of Mithila, ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಃ was delighted, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅವಾಪ್ಯ having got, ವಿಪುಲಾಮ್ noble, ಬುದ್ಧಿಮ್ thought, ಅವಾಪ್ತಃ obtained.

Thereafter, my father and the righteous lord of Mithila was delighted in possessing me when a noble thought struck his mind.
ದತ್ತಾ ಚಾಸ್ಮೀಷ್ಟವದ್ದೇವ್ಯೈ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಯೈ ಪುಣ್ಯಕರ್ಮಣಾ.

ತಯಾ ಸಮ್ಭಾವಿತಾ ಚಾಸ್ಮಿ ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಯಾ ಮಾತೃಸೌಹೃದಾತ್৷৷2.118.33৷৷


ಪುಣ್ಯಕರ್ಮಣಾ by a man of meritorious acts, ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾಯೈ to the chief, ದೇವ್ಯೈಃ queen, ಇಷ್ಟವತ್ as the choicest one, ದತ್ತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I was given, ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಯಾ by a lady endowed with affection, ತಯಾ by her, ಮಾತೃಸೌಹೃದಾತ್ with the love of a mother, ಸಮ್ಭಾವಿತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I was nourished.

Bestowed as the choicest one of meritorious acts on the chief queen, I was brought up by her, by nature affectionate, with the love of a mother.
ಪತಿಸಂಯೋಗಸುಲಭಂ ವಯೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ತು ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ.

ಚಿನ್ತಾಮಭ್ಯಗಮದ್ಧೀನೋ ವಿತ್ತನಾಶಾದಿವಾಧನಃ৷৷2.118.34৷৷


ಮೇ ಪಿತಾ my father, ಪತಿಸಂಯೋಗಸುಲಭಮ್ a proper time for uniting with a husband, ವಯಃ age, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having observed, ದೀನಃ desolate, ವಿತ್ತನಾಶಾತ್ due to loss of wealth, ಅಧನಃ ಇವ like an poor man, ಚಿನ್ತಾಮ್ sorrow, ಅಭ್ಯಗಮತ್ obtained.

When my father saw I had attained the marriageable age, he was immersed in sorrow like an indigent man who had lost all his wealth.
ಸದೃಶಾಚ್ಚಾಪಕೃಷ್ಟಾಚ್ಚ ಲೋಕೇ ಕನ್ಯಾಪಿತಾ ಜನಾತ್.

ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಣಾಮವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಶಕ್ರೇಣಾಪಿ ಸಮೋ ಭುವಿ৷৷2.118.35৷৷


ಭುವಿ on earth, ಶಕ್ರೇಣ with Indra, ಸಮೋಪಿ though equal, ಕನ್ಯಾಪಿತಾ the father of an unmarried girl, ಸದೃಶಾಃ equal, ಅಪಕೃಷ್ಟಾತ್ by an inferior, ಜನಾತ್ from men, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಣಾಮ್ humiliation, ಅವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ will receive.

Even though he was an Indra on earth, as a father of an unmarried girl he would be humiliated by men who are his equal or inferior in this world.
ತಾಂ ಧರ್ಷಣಾಮದೂರಸ್ಥಾಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಚಾತ್ಮನಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ.

ಚಿನ್ತಾರ್ಣವಗತಃ ಪಾರಂ ನಾಸಸಾದಾಪ್ಲವೋ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.118.36৷৷


ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ the king, ತಾಂ ಧರ್ಷಣಾಮ್ that humiliation, ಆತ್ಮನಿ in him, ಅದೂರಸ್ಥಾಮ್ not very far, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having observed, ಚಿನ್ತಾರ್ಣವಗತಃ submerged in a sea of sorrow, ಅಪ್ಲವೋ ಯಥಾ like one without a float, ಪಾರಮ್ the shore, ನಾಸಸಾದ did not reach.

Having perceived that the humiliation is not very far, king Janaka was plunged in a sea of sorrow like one who cannot reach the shore without a float.
ಅಯೋನಿಜಾಂ ಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ನಾಧ್ಯಗಚ್ಛದ್ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್.

ಸದೃಶಂ ಚಾನುರೂಪಂ ಚ ಮಹೀಪಾಲಃ ಪತಿಂ ಮಮ৷৷2.118.37৷৷


ಮಹೀಪಾಲಃ the ruler of earth, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಅಯೋನಿಜಾಮ್ not born from the womb, ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ having known, ಮಮ for me, ಸದೃಶಮ್ equal, ಅನುರೂಪಂ ಚ suitable, ಪತಿಮ್ husband, ವಿಚಿನ್ತಯನ್ thinking over, ನಾಧ್ಯಗಚ್ಛತ್ did not find.

The ruler of the earth knew that I was not born from a woman's womb, and could not find a suitable husband for me after deep reflection.
ತಸ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿರಿಯಂ ಜಾತಾ ಚಿನ್ತಯಾನಸ್ಯ ಸನ್ತತಮ್.

ಸ್ವಯಂವರಂ ತನೂಜಾಯಾಃ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮೀತಿ ಧೀಮತಃ৷৷2.118.38৷৷


ಸನ್ತತಮ್ constantly, ಚಿನ್ತಯಾನಸ್ಯ pondering deeply, ಧೀಮತಃ wise, ತಸ್ಯ his, ತನೂಜಾಯಾಃ for the daughter, ಸ್ವಯಂವರಮ್ swayamvara, ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ I shall perform, ಇತಿ thus, ಇಯಂ ಬುದ್ಧಿ: this thought, ಜಾತಾ was born.

After constantly pondering over the matter, the wise king arrived at the decision to perform a swayamvara for his daughter.
ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞೇ ತದಾ ತಸ್ಯ ವರುಣೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ.

ದತ್ತಂ ಧನುರ್ವರಂ ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ ತೂಣೀ ಚಾಕ್ಷಯಸಾಯಕೌ৷৷2.118.39৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞೇ at a great sacrifice, ತಸ್ಯ to him, ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ by the magnanimous, ವರುಣೇನ
by Varuna, ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ with affection, ಧನುರ್ವರಮ್ an excellent bow, ದತ್ತಮ್ was given, ಅಕ್ಷಯಸಾಯಕೌ with two inexhaustible arrows, ತೂಣೀ ಚ and two quivers.

Magnanimous Varuna out of his affection had given him, on the occasion of a great sacrifice, an excellent bow with inexhaustible arrows and a pair of quivers.
ಅಸಞ್ಚಾಲ್ಯಂ ಮನುಷ್ಯೈಶ್ಚ ಯತ್ನೇನಾಪಿ ಚ ಗೌರವಾತ್.

ತನ್ನ ಶಕ್ತಾ ನಮಯಿತುಂ ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇಷ್ವಪಿ ನರಾಧಿಪಾಃ৷৷2.118.40৷৷


ಗೌರವಾತ್ because of weight, ಮನುಷ್ಯೈಃ by a human, ಯತ್ನೇನಾಪಿ even with great effort, ಅಸಞ್ಚಾಲ್ಯಮ್ cannot be moved, ತತ್ that bow, ನರಾಧಿಪಾಃ lords of men, ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇಷ್ವಪಿ even in their dreams, ನಮಯಿತುಮ್ to bend, ನ ಶಕ್ತಾಃ were not capable.

Because of its weight, no human could move that bow despite great effort nor were the kings capable of bending it even in their dreams.
ತದ್ಧನುಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ಮೇ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಂ ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಾ.

ಸಮವಾಯೇ ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಂ ಪೂರ್ವಮಾಮನ್ತ್ಯ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾನ್৷৷2.118.41৷৷


ಸತ್ಯವಾದಿನಾ by a truthful man, ಮೇ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ previously, ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಾನ್ kings, ಆಮನ್ತ್ಯ having invited, ನರೇನ್ದ್ರಾಣಾಮ್ of kings, ಸಮವಾಯೇ in the assembly, ತತ್ ಧನುಃ that bow, ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ having
acquired, ವ್ಯಾಹೃತಮ್ addressed them.

My truthful father, after having acquired the bow, invited all the princes and placed the great bow before them in the assembly where he declared:
ಇದಂ ಚ ಧನುರುದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ಸಜ್ಯಂ ಯಃ ಕುರುತೇ ನರಃ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಮೇ ದುಹಿತಾ ಭಾರ್ಯಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ ನ ಸಂಶಯಃ৷৷2.118.42৷৷


ಯಃ ನರ: any man, ಇದಂ ಧನುಃ this bow, ಉದ್ಯಮ್ಯ having lifted, ಸಜ್ಯಂ ಚ string the bow, ಕುರುತೇ who
could do, ತಸ್ಯ to him, ಮೇ ದುಹಿತಾ my daughter, ಭಾರ್ಯಾ wife, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ shall become, ಸಂಶಯಃ ನ no doubt about it.

ತಚ್ಚ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಧನುಶ್ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಂ ಗೌರವಾದ್ಗಿರಿಸನ್ನಿಭಮ್.

ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ನೃಪಾ ಜಗ್ಮುರಶಕ್ತಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ತೋಲನೇ৷৷2.118.43৷৷


ನೃಪಾಃ the kings, ಗೌರವಾತ್ due to heavy weight, ಗಿರಿಸನ್ನಿಭಮ್ resembling a mountain, ತತ್ ಧನುಃ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಮ್ that mighty bow, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ beholding, ತಸ್ಯ its, ತೋಲನೇ in lifting, ಅಶಕ್ತಾಃ were unable, ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ paying obeisance, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ went away.

Beholding the mighty bow resembling a mountain in weight, the kings, unable to lift it, paid their homage and left.
ಸುದೀರ್ಘಸ್ಯ ತು ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ ರಾಘವೋಯಂ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ.

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೇಣ ಸಹಿತೋ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಸಮಾಗತಃ৷৷2.118.44৷৷

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ ರಾಮ ಸ್ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ.


ಸುದೀರ್ಘಸ್ಯ ಕಾಲಸ್ಯ after a long time, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ resplendent, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಃ whose prowess was truth, ಅಯಂ ರಾಮಃ this Rama, ಭ್ರಾತ್ರಾ with his brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೇನ ಸಹ along with
Lakshmana, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೇಣ ಸಹಿತಃ together with Viswamitra, ಯಜ್ಞಮ್ the sacrifice, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to observe, ಸಮಾಗತಃ arrived.

After a long time, resplendent Rama whose prowess was truth, arrived along with his brother Lakshman and sage Viswamitra in order to witness the sacrifice.
ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ತು ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ ಮಮ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಸುಪೂಜಿತಃ৷৷2.118.45৷৷

ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ ಪಿತರಂ ತತ್ರ ಭ್ರಾತರೌ ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ.


ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ the righteous man, ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ತು as for Viswamitra, ಮಮ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಸುಪೂಜಿತಃ well-honoured, ತತ್ರ there, ಭ್ರಾತರೌ brothers, ರಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೌ to Rama and Lakshmana, ಪಿತರಮ್ to
my father, ಪ್ರೋವಾಚ uttered.

Having accepted the honour extended by my father, righteous Viswamitra spoke to him about those two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana.
ಸುತೌ ದಶರಥಸ್ಯೇಮೌ ಧನುರ್ದರ್ಶಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣೌ.

ಧನುರ್ದರ್ಶಯ ರಾಮಾಯ ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಯ ದೈವಿಕಮ್৷৷2.118.46৷৷


ದಶರಥಸ್ಯ king Dasaratha's, ಸುತೌ sons, ಇಮೌ both these, ಧನುರ್ದರ್ಶಕಾಙ್ಕ್ಷಿಣೌ are desirous of seeing the bow, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಾಯ to this king's son, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ದೈವಿಕಮ್ divine, ಧನುಃ bow, ದರ್ಶಯ show.

'Both these sons of king Dasaratha wish to see the bow. Show the divine bow to prince Rama'.
ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಸ್ತೇನ ವಿಪ್ರೇಣ ತದ್ಧನುಸ್ಸಮುಪಾನಯತ್৷৷2.118.47৷৷

ನಿಮೇಷಾನ್ತರಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ತದಾನಮ್ಯ ಮಹಾಬಲಃ.

ಜ್ಯಾಂ ಸಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ ಝಡಿತಿ ಪೂರಯಾಮಾಸ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್৷৷2.118.48৷৷


ತೇನ ವಿಪ್ರೇಣ by that ascetic, ಇತಿ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ uttered, ತತೋ then, ಧನುಃ bow, ಉಪಾನಯತ್ brought,
ಮಹಾಬಲಃ mighty one, ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್ valiant man, ನಿಮೇಷಾನ್ತರಮಾತ್ರೇಣ in the twinkling of an eye, ತತ್ that one, ಆನಮ್ಯ having bent, ಝಡಿತಿ instantly, ಜ್ಯಾಮ್ the string, ಸಮಾರೋಪ್ಯ pulling it, ಪೂರಯಾಮಾಸ drew it.

At the words of that ascetic, my father brought out the bow. Mighty and valiant Rama bent it and strung it and drew it in the twinkling of an eye.
ತೇನ ಪೂರಯತಾ ವೇಗಾನ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಭಗ್ನಂ ದ್ವಿಧಾ ಧನುಃ.

ತಸ್ಯ ಶಬ್ದೋ ಭವದ್ಭೀಮಃ ಪತಿತಸ್ಯಾಶನೇರಿವ৷৷2.118.49৷৷

into two, ಭಗ್ನಮ್ was broken, ತಸ್ಯ its, ಭೀಮಃ dreadful, ಶಬ್ದಃ sound, ಪತಿತಸ್ಯ fallen, ಅಶನೇರಿವ like that of a thunder, ಅಭವತ್ arose.

When Rama was stringing the bow with force, it was broken into two in the middle and fell down with a dreadful sound like that of thunder.
ತತೋಹಂ ತತ್ರ ರಾಮಾಯ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ಸತ್ಯಾಭಿಸನ್ಧಿನಾ.

ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾ ದಾತುಮುದ್ಯಮ್ಯ ಜಲಭಾಜನಮುತ್ತಮಮ್৷৷2.118.50৷৷


ತತಃ then, ತತ್ರ there, ಸತ್ಯಾಭಿಸನ್ಧಿನಾ by one steadfast in truth, ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ pure, ಜಲಭಾಜನಮ್ water-vessel, ಉದ್ಯಮ್ಯ having raised, ಅಹಮ್ I, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama , ದಾತುಮ್ to give, ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾ decided.

Then, my father steadfast in truth, held a vessel of pure water and declared his decision to offer me to Rama.
ದೀಯಮಾನಾಂ ನ ತು ತದಾ ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ ರಾಘವಃ.

ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ ಪಿತುಶ್ಛನ್ದಮಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತೇಃ ಪ್ರಭೋಃ৷৷2.118.51৷৷


ತದಾ then, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಧಿಪತೇಃ of the king of Ayodhya, ಪ್ರಭೋಃ lord, ಪಿತುಃ his father's, ಛನ್ದಮ್ opinion, ಅವಿಜ್ಞಾಯ without knowing, ದೀಯಮಾನಾಮ್ being offered by father, ನ ತು ಪ್ರತಿಜಗ್ರಾಹ
did not accept.

Then Rama did not accept the offer of my father straightaway before he knew the opinion of his father Dasaratha, king of Ayodhya.
ತತ ಶ್ಶ್ವಶುರಮಾಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್.

ಮಮ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ತ್ವಹಂ ದತ್ತಾ ರಾಮಾಯ ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನೇ৷৷2.118.52৷৷


ತತಃ then, ಮಮ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಶ್ವಶುರಮ್ father-in-law, ವೃದ್ಧಮ್ aged, ದಶರಥಂ ನೃಪಮ್ king
Dasaratha, ಆಮನ್ತ್ರ್ಯ having invited, ಅಹಮ್ I, ವಿದಿತಾತ್ಮನ: of a man who is known for his sagacity, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ದತ್ತಾ I was given.

Thereafter, my father-in-law, the aged king Dasaratha was invited and my father offered me to Rama known for his sagacity.
ಮಮ ಚೈವಾನುಜಾ ಸಾಧ್ವೀ ಊರ್ಮಿಲಾ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಾ.

ಭಾರ್ಯರ್ಥೇ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ಪಿತ್ರಾ ದತ್ತಾ ಮಮ ಸ್ವಯಮ್৷৷2.118.53৷৷


ಮಮ my, ಅನುಜಾ younger sister, ಸಾಧ್ವೀ chaste, ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶನಾ pleasing appearance, ಊರ್ಮಿಲಾ Urmila, ಭಾರ್ಯಾರ್ಥೇ as wife, ಮಮ ಪಿತ್ರಾ by my father, ಸ್ವಯಮ್ of his own accord, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಸ್ಯಾಪಿ for Lakshman, ದತ್ತಾ was given.

My father, on his own accord, bestowed Urmila, my younger sister of chaste and of pleasing appearance as wife to Lakshmana.
ಏವಂ ದತ್ತಾಸ್ಮಿ ರಾಮಾಯ ತದಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ಸ್ವಯಂವರೇ.

ಅನುರಕ್ತಾಸ್ಮಿ ಧರ್ಮೇಣ ಪತಿಂ ವೀರ್ಯವತಾಂ ವರಮ್৷৷2.118.54৷৷


ತದಾ then, ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸ್ವಯಂವರೇ in that swayamvara, ರಾಮಾಯ for Rama, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ದತ್ತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ was bestowed, ವೀರ್ಯವತಾಮ್ among valiant, ವರಮ್ foremost, ಪತಿಮ್ husband, ಧರ್ಮೇಣ in accordance with righteousness, ಅನುರಕ್ತಾ ಅಸ್ಮಿ I remain devoted.

In this way my father bestowed me on Rama in that swayamvara and I remain devoted to my husband who is the foremost among the valiant in treading the path of righteousness.
ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾಕಾಣ್ಡೇ ಅಷ್ಟಾದಶೋತ್ತರಶತತಮಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ.
Thus ends the one hundredeighteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
