[Dasaratha tries to appease queen Kaikeyi.]

ಅತದರ್ಹಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ಶಯಾನಮತಥೋಚಿತಮ್.

ಯಯಾತಿಮಿವ ಪುಣ್ಯಾನ್ತೇ ದೇವಲೋಕಾತ್ಪರಿಚ್ಯುತಮ್৷৷2.13.1৷৷

ಅನರ್ಥರೂಪಾ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾ ಹ್ಯಭೀತಾ ಭಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ.

ಪುನರಾಕಾರಯಾಮಾಸ ತಮೇವ ವರಮಙ್ಗನಾ৷৷2.13.2৷৷

ಅನರ್ಥರೂಪಾ misfortune incarnate, ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾ with her purpose fulfilled, ಅಙ್ಗನಾ that woman, ಅತದರ್ಹಮ್ who did not merit such treatment, ಅತಥೋಚಿತಮ್ who was not accustomed to that (treatment), ಪುಣ್ಯಾನ್ತೇ after exhausting the merits (earned), ದೇವಲೋಕಾತ್ from the heaven, ಪರಿಚ್ಯುತಮ್ fallen, ಯಯಾತಿಮಿವ like Yayati, ಶಯಾನಮ್ lying, ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ to the maharaja (Dasaratha), ಅಭೀತಾ fearless, ಭಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ displaying fear, ಪುನಃ again, ತಮೇವ ವರಮ್ those very boons, ಆಕಾರಯಾಮಾಸ urged.

The maharaja lying on the floor resembled (king) Yayati fallen from heaven after his merits (earned earlier) were exhausted. He neither deserved nor was accustomed to such (humiliating) treatment. Fearless Kaikeyi ,the incarnate of misfortune having accomplished her purpose, displyaing feigned fear, urged the king again (without inhibition), about the boons:

ಅತದರ್ಹಂ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ಶಯಾನಮತಥೋಚಿತಮ್.

ಯಯಾತಿಮಿವ ಪುಣ್ಯಾನ್ತೇ ದೇವಲೋಕಾತ್ಪರಿಚ್ಯುತಮ್৷৷2.13.1৷৷

ಅನರ್ಥರೂಪಾ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥಾ ಹ್ಯಭೀತಾ ಭಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ.

ಪುನರಾಕಾರಯಾಮಾಸ ತಮೇವ ವರಮಙ್ಗನಾ৷৷2.13.2৷৷

ತ್ವಂ ಕತ್ಥಸೇ ಮಹಾರಾಜ! ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ.

ಮಮ ಚೇಮಂ ವರಂ ಕಸ್ಮಾದ್ವಿಧಾರಯಿತುಮಿಚ್ಛಸಿ৷৷2.13.3৷৷

ಮಹಾರಾಜ O maharaja, ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ truthful, ದೃಢವ್ರತಃ steadfast in your vows, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಕತ್ಥಸೇ used to boast of, ಮಮ my, ಇಮಂ ವರಮ್ this boon, ಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ why, ವಿಧಾರಯಿತುಮ್ to avoid, ಇಚ್ಛಸಿ are seeking?

O great king! you used to boast that you always speak the truth and are steadfast in your vows. Why are you now seeking to avoid granting me this boon?

ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಸ್ತದಾ.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ ತತಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ಮುಹೂರ್ತಂ ವಿಹ್ವಲನ್ನಿವ৷৷2.13.4৷৷

ತದಾ then, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ by Kaikeyi, ಏವಮ್ in this way, ಉಕ್ತಃ having said, ರಾಜಾ ದಶರಥಃ king Dasaratha, ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ in indignation, ಮುಹೂರ್ತಮ್ for a while, ವಿಹ್ವಲನ್ನಿವ as if in a state of delirium, ತತಃ afterwards, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುವಾಚ replied.

Thus addressed by Kaikeyi, king Dasaratha flew into a temper for a while, and then as if in a state of delirium, replied:

ಮೃತೇ ಮಯಿ ಗತೇ ರಾಮೇ ವನಂ ಮನುಜಪುಙ್ಗವೇ.

ಹನ್ತಾನಾರ್ಯೇ! ಮಮಾಮಿತ್ರೇ! ಸಕಾಮಾ ಸುಖಿನೀ ಭವ৷৷2.13.5৷৷

ಮನುಜಪುಙ್ಗವೇ foremost among men, ರಾಮೇ Rama, ವನಂಗತೇ exiled, ಮಯಿ me, ಮೃತೇ being dead, ಅನಾರ್ಯೇ O ignoble woman! ಮಮ ಅಮಿತ್ರೇ my enemy, ಸಕಾಮಾ having satisfied your desire, ಸುಖಿನೀ ಭವ be happy, ಹನ್ತ alas.

Alas! O ignoble woman, my enemy, your desire would be fulfilled after Rama, the foremost among men is exiled and I am dead. You will be happy thereafter!

ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇಪಿ ಖಲು ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಕುಶಲಂ ದೈವತೈರಹಮ್.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾದೇಶಾದಭಿಹಿತಂ ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ ಕಥಂ ಬತ৷৷2.13.6৷৷

ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇಪಿ even in heaven, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾದೇಶಾತ್ with repudiation, ಅಭಿಹಿತಮ್ stated, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ about Rama's, ಕುಶಲಮ್ welfare, ದೈವತೈಃ by gods, ಕಥಂ ಖಲು how, ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯೇ will I hold (convince), ಬತ what a catastrophe.

Even in heaven when the gods enquire about the welfare of Rama how will I convince them about his banishment repudiating the fact? What a catastrophe!

ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮೇನ ರಾಮಃ ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತೋ ಮಯಾ.

ಯದಿ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಬ್ರವೀಮ್ಯೇತತ್ತದಸತ್ಯಂ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.13.7৷৷

ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾಃ of Kaikeyi, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮೇನ for the pleasure, ಮಯಾ by me, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪ್ರವ್ರಾಜಿತಃ was sent (to the forest), ಏತತ್ this, ಸತ್ಯಮ್ truth, ಬ್ರವೀಮಿ ಯದಿ if I tell, ತತ್ that, ಅಸತ್ಯಮ್ untruth, ಭವಿಷ್ಯತಿ will become.

If I tell the truth, 'To please Kaikeyi I have sent Rama to the forest', none will believe it and will consider it untruth.

ಅಪುತ್ರೇಣ ಮಯಾ ಪುತ್ರಶ್ಶ್ರಮೇಣ ಮಹತಾ ಮಹಾನ್.

ರಾಮೋ ಲಬ್ಧೋ ಮಹಾಬಾಹು ಸ್ಸಕಥಂ ತ್ಯಜ್ಯತೇ ಮಯಾ৷৷2.13.8৷৷

ಅಪುತ್ರೇಣ without sons, ಮಯಾ by me, ಮಹತಾ with great, ಶ್ರಮೇಣ with effort, ಮಹಾನ್ mighty, ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ mighty-armed, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಪುತ್ರಃ as son, ಲಬ್ಧ: obtained, ಸಃ he, ಮಯಾ by me, ಕಥಮ್ how, ತ್ಯಜ್ಯತೇ can be abandoned.

When I was issueless, I obtained mighty and valiant Rama with great effort as a son. How can I banish him?

ಶೂರಶ್ಚ ಕೃತವಿದ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧೋ ಕ್ಷಮಾಪರಃ.

ಕಥಂ ಕಮಲಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ಮಯಾ ರಾಮೋ ವಿವಾಸ್ಯತೇ৷৷2.13.9৷৷

ಶೂರಃ brave, ಕೃತವಿದ್ಯಶ್ಚ learned also, ಜಿತಕ್ರೋಧಃ one who has subdued anger, ಕ್ಷಮಾಪರಃ forgiving, ಕಮಲಪತ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ one with eyes resembling lotus petals, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಮಯಾ by me, ಕಥಮ್
how, ವಿವಾಸ್ಯತೇ can be sent on exile.

How can I exile Rama, whose eyes resemble lotus petals, who is learned, who has subdued his anger and who is always full of forgiveness?

ಕಥಮಿನ್ದೀವರಶ್ಯಾಮಂ ದೀರ್ಘಬಾಹುಂ ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್.

ಅಭಿರಾಮಮಹಂ ರಾಮಂ ಪ್ರೇಷಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್৷৷2.13.10৷৷

ಇನ್ದೀವರಶ್ಯಾಮಮ್ complexion resembling blue lotus, ದೀರ್ಘಬಾಹುಮ್ one with long arms, ಮಹಾಬಲಮ್ one with immense strength, ಅಭಿರಾಮಮ್ a charming person, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ಅಹಮ್ I, ದಣ್ಡಕಾನ್ to Dandaka, ಕಥಮ್ how, ಪ್ರೇಷಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ can despatch.

Rama with a charming personality has a complexion like the blue lotus. He has long arms (with immense strength). How can I banish him to Dandaka forest?

ಸುಖಾನಾಮುಚಿತಸ್ಯೈವ ದುಃಖೈರನುಚಿತಸ್ಯ ಚ.

ದುಖಂ ನಾಮಾನುಪಶ್ಯೇಯಂ ಕಥಂ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಧೀಮತಃ৷৷2.13.11৷৷

ಸುಖಾನಾಮ್ happiness, ಉಚಿತಸ್ಯ deserves, ದುಃಖೈಃ sufferings, ಅನುಚಿತಸ್ಯ ಚ does not deserve, ಧೀಮತಃ sagacious, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ to Rama, ದುಃಖಮ್ distress, ಕಥಂ ನಾಮ how, ಅನುಪಶ್ಯೇಯಮ್ can I bear to see

Rama deserves happiness not suffering. How can I bear to see such a sagacious Rama undergoing distress?

ಯದಿ ದುಃಖಮಕೃತ್ವಾದ್ಯ ಮಮ ಸಂಕ್ರಮಣಂ ಭವೇತ್.

ಅದುಃಖಾರ್ಹಸ್ಯ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ತತ ಸ್ಸುಖಮವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್৷৷2.13.12৷৷

ಅದುಃಖಾರ್ಹಸ್ಯ one who does not deserve suffering, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrow, ಅಕೃತ್ವಾ not inflicting, ಮಮ my, ಸಂಕ್ರಮಣಮ್ reaching death, ಅದ್ಯ now, ಭವೇತ್ if it happens, ತತಃ therefrom, ಸುಖಮ್ happiness, ಅವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್ I shall experience.

If death comes to me right now I shall be very happy because I will not have to inflict suffering on Rama who does not deserve it.

ನೃಶಂಸೇ! ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪೇ ರಾಮಂ ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್.

ಕಿಂ ವಿಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ ಕೈಕೇಯಿ! ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಯೋಜಯಸೇ ಮಮ৷৷2.13.13৷৷

ಅಕೀರ್ತಿರತುಲಾ ಲೋಕೇ ಧ್ರುವಂ ಪರಿಭವಶ್ಚ ಮೇ.

ನೃಶಂಸೇ O cruel one! ಪಾಪಸಙ್ಕಲ್ಪೇ O woman of evil intentions! ಕೈಕೇಯಿ Kaikeyi, ಮಮ my, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ dear, ಸತ್ಯಪರಾಕ್ರಮಮ್ truth as prowess, ರಾಮಮ್ to Rama, ವಿಪ್ರಿಯೇಣ harmful, ಕಿಮ್ why, ಯೋಜಯಸೇ arranging, ಲೋಕೇ in this world, ಮೇ to me, ಅತುಲಾ unequalled, ಅಕೀರ್ತಿಃ infamy, ಪರಿಭವಶ್ಚ disgrace, ಧ್ರುವಂ this is inevitable.

O cruel, malevolent Kaikeyi, why do you propose such a harmful act against Rama who has truth as his prowess and who is so dear to me? Certainly, you will get unparalleled infamy and disgrace in this world.

ತಥಾ ವಿಲಪತಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಪರಿಭ್ರಮಿತಚೇತಸಃ৷৷2.13.14৷৷

ಅಸ್ತಮಭ್ಯಗಮತ್ಸೂರ್ಯೋ ರಜನೀ ಚಾಭ್ಯವರ್ತತ.

ಪರಿಭ್ರಮಿತಚೇತಸಃ with a whirling mind, ತಸ್ಯ of that Dasaratha, ತಥಾ in that way, ವಿಲಪತಃ lamenting ಸೂರ್ಯಃ the Sun, ಅಸ್ತಮಭ್ಯಗಮತ್ set, ರಜನೀ ಚ night also, ಅಭ್ಯವರ್ತತ ಚ fell.

While Dasaratha was thus lamenting with a distracted mind, the Sun set and night fell.

ಸಾ ತ್ರಿಯಾಮಾ ತಥಾರ್ತ್ತಸ್ಯ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಣ್ಡಲಮಣ್ಡಿತಾ৷৷2.13.15৷৷

ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಿಲಪಮಾನಸ್ಯ ನ ವ್ಯಭಾಸತ ಶರ್ವರೀ.

ತಥಾ in that way, ಆರ್ತ್ತಸ್ಯ of the anguished, ವಿಲಪಮಾನಸ್ಯ while he was lamenting, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ of the king, ತ್ರಿಯಾಮಾ with three yamas, ಸಾ that, ಶರ್ವರೀ night, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಣ್ಡಲಮಣ್ಡಿತಾ adorned with the lunar orb, ನ ವ್ಯಭಾಸತ did not shine.

For the king who was in deep anguish and in tears the night appeared dark even though it was adorned with the lunar orb.

ತಥೈವೋಷ್ಣಂ ವಿನಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ವೃದ್ಧೋ ದಶರಥೋ ನೃಪಃ৷৷2.13.16৷৷

ವಿಲಲಾಪಾರ್ತವದ್ಯುಖಂ ಗಗನಾಸಕ್ತಲೋಚನಃ.

ವೃದ್ಧಃ aged, ದಶರಥಃ ನೃಪಃ king Dasaratha, ತಥೈವ in that way only, ಉಷ್ಣಮ್ hot, ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸ್ಯ heaving sighs, ಆರ್ತವತ್ like a sick man, ಗಗನಾಸಕ್ತಲೋಚನಃ looked at the sky with a fixed gaze, ದುಃಖಮ್ pitiably, ವಿಲಲಾಪ lamented.

The old king Dasaratha, heaving hot sighs, started lamenting pitiably fixing his gaze at the sky like the sick:

ನ ಪ್ರಭಾತಂ ತ್ವಯೇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ನಿಶೇ! ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಭೂಷಣೇ!৷৷2.13.17৷৷

ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಂ ಮೇ ದಯಾ ಭದ್ರೇ! ಮಯಾಯಂ ರಚಿತೋಞ್ಜಲಿಃ.

ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಭೂಷಣೇ! adorned with stars, ಭದ್ರೇ O auspicious-looking one, ನಿಶೇ O Night! ತ್ವಯಾ by you, ಪ್ರಭಾತಮ್ dawn, ನ ಇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ I do not desire, ಮೇ to me, ದಯಾ kindness, ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಮ್ be done, ಮಯಾ by me, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with palms folded, ರಚಿತಃ is held.

'O auspicious-looking Night adorned with stars, I do not wish to see the dawn. O gentle night, be kind to me I pray with folded hands'.

ಅಥವಾ ಗಮ್ಯತಾಂ ಶೀಘ್ರಂ ನಾಹಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ನಿರ್ಘೃಣಾಮ್৷৷2.13.18৷৷

ನೃಶಂಸಾಂ ಕೈಕಯೀಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಂ ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ ವ್ಯಸನಂ ಮಹತ್.

ಅಥವಾ or, ಶೀಘ್ರಮ್ quickly, ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ let it go, ಯತ್ಕೃತೇ for whose sake, ಮಹತ್ great, ವ್ಯಸನಮ್ misfortune, ನಿರ್ಘೃಣಾಮ್ merciless, ನೃಶಂಸಾಮ್ malicious, ಕೈಕಯೀಮ್ Kaikeyi, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to look at, ಅಹಮ್ I, ನೇಚ್ಛಾಮಿ do not desire.

'Or, pass off quickly. I do not want to see this merciless, malicious Kaikeyi who is the
cause of this great misfortune'.

ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತತೋ ರಾಜಾ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಸಂಯತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ৷৷2.13.19৷৷

ಪ್ರಸಾದಯಾಮಾಸ ಪುನಃ ಕೈಕೇಯೀಂ ಚೇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್.

ರಾಜಾ king, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ having said, ತತಃ then, ಸಂಯತಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded hands, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್
to Kaikeyi, ಪ್ರಸಾದಯಾಮಾಸ appeased, ಪುನಃ again, ಕೈಕೇಯೀಮ್ to Kaikeyi, ಇದಂ ಚ this word also, ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ spoke.

Having said this, the king spoke again with folded hands to Kaikeyi in order to appease her:

ಸಾಧು ವೃತ್ತಸ್ಯ ದೀನಸ್ಯ ತ್ವದ್ಗತಸ್ಯ ಗತಾಯುಷಃ৷৷2.1.20৷৷

ಪ್ರಸಾದಃ ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಂ ದೇವಿ! ಭದ್ರೇ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಿಶೇಷತಃ.

ಭದ್ರೇ O gentle lady, ದೇವಿ O queen, ಸಾಧುವೃತ್ತಸ್ಯ having good conduct, ದೀನಸ್ಯ of this wretch, ತ್ವದ್ಗತಸ್ಯ devoted to you, ಗತಾಯುಷಃ of a man whose life is almost over, ವಿಶೇಷತಃ especially, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ as a king, ಪ್ರಸಾದಃ favour, ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಮ್ let it be done.

O gentle queen, I am an old man and my life is almost over. I am a wretch devoted to you. I am a man of good conduct. Do me this favour especially as I am king.

ಶೂನ್ಯೇ ನ ಖಲು ಸುಶ್ರೋಣಿ! ಮಯೇದಂ ಸಮುದಾಹೃತಮ್৷৷2.13.21৷৷

ಕುರು ಸಾಧು ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಮೇ ಬಾಲೇ! ಸಹೃದಯಾ ಹ್ಯಸಿ.

ಸುಶ್ರೋಣಿ fair-hipped lady, ಮಯಾ by me, ಇದಮ್ all this, ಶೂನ್ಯೇ in the sky, ನ ಖಲು ಸಮುದಾಹೃತಮ್ indeed has not been told, ಬಾಲೇ O young lady, ಮೇ to me, ಸಾಧು very well, ಪ್ರಸಾದಮ್ favour, ಕುರು do, ಸಹೃದಯಾ ಅಸಿ ಹಿ surely you are kind-hearted.

O lady with fair hips, I hope whatever I have said has not been a cry in the (empty) sky. O young lady show me this favour. Surely you are kind-hearted.

ಪ್ರಸೀದ ದೇವಿ! ರಾಮೋಮೇತ್ವದ್ದತ್ತಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮವ್ಯಮ್৷৷2.13.22৷৷

ಲಭತಾಮಸಿತಾಪಾಙ್ಗೇ ಯಶಃ ಪರಮವಾಪ್ನು ಹಿ.

ದೇವಿ O queen, ಪ್ರಸೀದ be pleased, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ತ್ವದ್ದತ್ತಮ್ given by you, ಮೇ ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ my kingdom, ಲಭತಾಮ್ will receive, ಅಸಿತಾಪಾಙ್ಗೇ O one with dark eyelashes, ಪರಮ್ very great, ಯಶಃ fame, ಅವಾಪ್ನುಹಿ acquire.

O queen with beautiful, dark eyelashes, show pity on me. Let Rama receive this unbounded kingdom through you and you acquire fame.

ಮಮ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಗುರೂಣಾಂ ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.13.23৷৷

ಪ್ರಿಯಮೇತದ್ಗುರುಶ್ರೋಣಿ! ಕುರು ಚಾರುಮುಖೇಕ್ಷಣೇ

ಗುರುಶ್ರೋಣಿ O one with heavy hips! ಚಾರುಮುಖೇಕ್ಷಣೇ having charming eyes and a beautiful face, ಮಮ for me, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ of Rama, ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ of the world, ಗುರೂಣಾಮ್ to all the preceptors, ಭರತಸ್ಯ ಚ of Bharata also, ಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ pleasing, ಏತತ್ this act, ಕುರು do.

O lady with heavy hips, charming eyes and a beautiful face, do this favour to me, to Rama, to the world, to all the preceptors and to Bharata too.

ವಿಶುದ್ಧಭಾವಸ್ಯ ಸುದುಷ್ಟಭಾವಾ

ತಾಮ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಸ್ಯಾಶ್ರುಕಲಸ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಞಃ.

ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಂ ಕರುಣಂ ವಿಲಾಪಂ

ಭರ್ತುರ್ನೃಶಂಸಾ ನ ಚಕಾರ ವಾಕ್ಯಮ್৷৷2.13.24৷৷

ಸುದುಷ್ಟಭಾವಾ a lady with wicked thoughts, ನೃಶಂಸಾ heartless, ವಿಶುದ್ಧಭಾವಸ್ಯ of pure (kind) feeling, ತಾಮ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಸ್ಯ of one with eyes rendered red, ಅಶ್ರುಕಲಸ್ಯ filled with tears, ಭರ್ತುಃ husband, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ king's, ವಿಚಿತ್ರಮ್ in various ways, ಕರುಣಂ ವಿಲಾಪಮ್ piteous wailing, ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ having heard, ವಾಕ್ಯಂ that word, ನ ಚಕಾರ did not obey.

The king with a clean heart, whose eyes had been rendered red with weeping wailed piteously. Even after hearing it, that malicious woman full of wicked thoughts did not act upon his word.

ತತಸ್ಸ ರಾಜಾ ಪುನರೇವ ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ

ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮತುಷ್ಟಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲಭಾಷಿಣೀಮ್.

ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ ವಿವಾಸನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ

ಕ್ಷಿತೌ ವಿಸಂಜ್ಞೋ ನಿಪಪಾತ ದುಖಿತಃ৷৷2.13.25৷৷

ಪುತ್ರಸ್ಯ son's, ವಿವಾಸನಂ ಪ್ರತಿ about banishment, ಪ್ರತಿಕೂಲಭಾಷಿಣೀಮ್ speaking the opposite, ಅತುಷ್ಟಾಮ್ not satisfied, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ beloved wife, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ದುಃಖಿತಃ struck with grief, ತತಃ thereafter, ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ that king, ಪುನರೇವ again, ಮೂರ್ಛಿತಃ having fainted, ವಿಸಂಜ್ಞಃ losing consciousness, ಕ್ಷಿತೌ on the ground (floor), ನಿಪಪಾತ fell down.

Seeing his dear wife not pleased (despite his pleadings) and urging him, to the contrary, for the banishment of his son, the king overcome with grief fell down unconscious on the floor.

ಇತೀವ ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವ್ಯಥಿತಸ್ಯ ಸಾ ನಿಶಾ

ಜಗಾಮ ಘೋರಂ ಶ್ವಸತೋ ಮನಸ್ವಿನಃ

ವಿಬೋಧ್ಯಮಾನಃ ಪ್ರತಿಬೋಧನಂ ತದಾ

ನಿವಾರಯಾಮಾಸ ಸ ರಾಜಸತ್ತಮಃ৷৷2.13.26৷৷

ಇತೀವ like this, ವ್ಯಥಿತಸ್ಯ afflicted with grief, ಮನಸ್ವಿನಃ of that high-minded, ರಾಜ್ಞಃ of king, ಘೋರಮ್ dreadful, ಶ್ವಸತಃ heaving deep sighs, ಸಾ ನಿಶಾ that night, ಜಗಾಮ passed off, ಸಃ ರಾಜಸತ್ತಮಃ that eminent king, ವಿಬೋಧ್ಯಮಾನಃ being awakened (by panegyrists), ತದಾ then, ಪ್ರತಿಬೋಧನಮ್ not to awaken, ನಿವಾರಯಾಮಾಸ stopped.

The night passed off with the high-minded king lamenting this way and heaving deep sighs. When he got up, the eminent king stopped (the panegyrists) awakening him.

Thus ends the thirteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
