[Sumantra reaches Rama's palace and conveys to him Dasaratha's message-Rama accompanied by Lakshmana proceeds to his father's palace--- comments of men and women on his way to the king.]

ತದನ್ತಃಪುರದ್ವಾರಂ ಸಮತೀತ್ಯ ಜನಾಕುಲಮ್.

ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಾಂ ತತಃ ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಾಸಸಾದ ಪುರಾಣವಿತ್৷৷2.16.1৷৷

ಪ್ರಾಸಕಾರ್ಮುಕಬಿಭ್ರದ್ಭಿರ್ಯುವಭಿರ್ಮೃಷ್ಟಕುಣ್ಡಲೈಃ.

ಪುರಾಣವಿತ್ conversant with ancient traditions, ಸಃ he (Sumantra), ಜನಾಕುಲಂ ತದ್ crowded with people, ಅನ್ತಃಪುರದ್ವಾರಮ್ the door of the inner apartment, ಸಮತೀತ್ಯ having passed through, ತತಃ after that, ಪ್ರಾಸಕಾರ್ಮುಕಬಿಭ್ರದ್ಭಿಃ carrying spears and bows, ಮೃಷ್ಟಕುಂಡಲೈಃ wearing shining ear -rings, ಅಪ್ರಮಾದಿಭಿಃ alert, ಏಕಾಗ್ರೈಃ attentive, ಸ್ವನುರಕ್ತೈ: with utmost devotion (to the king), ಯುವಭಿಃ by young men, ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಿತಾಮ್ guarding, ಪ್ರವಿವಿಕ್ತಾಮ್ sparsely crowded, ಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮ್ courtyard, ಆಸಸಾದ reached.

Sumantra, who was conversant with ancient traditions, passed through the entrance of the inner apartment full of people and reached the sparsely crowded courtyard. There alert, loyal young men were attentively guarding the frontyard, armed with spears and bows and wearing shining ear-rings.

ದದರ್ಶ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾನ್ ದ್ವಾರಿ ಸ್ತ್ರ್ಯಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾನ್ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಾನ್৷৷2.16.3৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಕಾಷಾಯಿಣಃ wearing orange robes, ವೃದ್ಧಾನ್ the aged, ವೇತ್ರಪಾಣೀನ್ canes in hands, ಸ್ವಲಙ್ಕೃತಾನ್ well-ornamented, ಸುಸಮಾಹಿತಾನ್ with utmost concentation, ದ್ವಾರಿ at the entrance, ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಾನ್ appointed, ಸ್ತ್ರ್ಯಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಾನ್ security staff for women's apartments, ದದರ್ಶ saw.

He saw aged people appointed as security staff for women's apartments. They were
well-adorned, dressed in orange robes and with rapt attention stood holding staff in their hands.
ತೇ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಮಾಯಾನ್ತಂ ರಾಮಪ್ರಿಯಚಿಕೀರ್ಷವಃ.

ಸಹಸೋತ್ಪತಿತಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ಸ್ವಾಸನೇಭ್ಯಸ್ಸಸಮ್ಭ್ರಮಾಃ৷৷2.16.4৷৷


ರಾಮಪ್ರಿಯಚಿಕೀರ್ಷವಃ wishing the welfare of Rama, ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ all of them, ಸಮಾಯಾನ್ತಮ್ arriving, ಸಮೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ having seen, ಸಸಂಭ್ರಮಾಃ in great haste, ಸಹಸಾ quickly, ಆಸನೇಭ್ಯಃ from their seats, ಉತ್ಪತಿತಾಃ rose.

On seeing (Sumantra) arriving, all of them, well-wishers to Rama, quickly rose from their seats.
ತಾನುವಾಚ ವಿನೀತಾತ್ಮಾ ಸೂತಪುತ್ರಃ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ.

ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮಾಖ್ಯಾತ ರಾಮಾಯ ಸುಮಂನ್ತ್ರೋ ದ್ವಾರಿ ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ৷৷2.16.5৷৷


ವಿನೀತಾತ್ಮಾ humble, ಸೂತಪುತ್ರಃ to charioteer, ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣಃ extremely courteous, ತಾನ್ to them, ಉವಾಚ said, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರ: Sumantra, ದ್ವಾರಿ at the entrance, ತಿಷ್ಠತಿ is waiting, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ at once, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಆಖ್ಯಾತ inform
.
Humble and extremely courteous charioteer (to the guards) said, Inform Rama at once that Sumantra is waiting at the entrance.
ತೇ ರಾಮಮುಪಸಙ್ಗಮ್ಯ ಭರ್ತುಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಚಿಕೀರ್ಷವಃ.

ಸಹಭಾರ್ಯಾಯ ರಾಮಾಯ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವಾಭಿಚಕ್ಷಿರೇ৷৷2.16.6৷৷


ಭರ್ತುಃ of the master, ಪ್ರಿಯಚಿಕೀರ್ಷವಃ desirous of doing good, ತೇ they, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಉಪಸಙ್ಗಮ್ಯ having approached, ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಮೇವ speedily, ಸಹಭಾರ್ಯಾಯ in the company of his wife, ರಾಮಾಯ to Rama, ಆಭಿಚಕ್ಷಿರೇ informed.

Always dedicated to the well-being of their master, they approached Rama who was in the company of Sita. And informed him:
ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಮಾಜ್ಞಾಯ ಸೂತಮಭ್ಯನ್ತರಂ ಪಿತುಃ.

ತತ್ರೈವಾನಾಯಯಾಮಾಸ ರಾಘವಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ৷৷2.16.7৷৷


ರಾಘವಃ scion of the Raghus (Rama), ಪಿತುಃ of his father, ಅಭ್ಯನ್ತರಮ್ intimate, ಪ್ರತಿವೇದಿತಮ್ informed by them, ಸೂತಮ್ to the charioteer, ಆಜ್ಞಾಯ having come to know, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮ್ಯಯಾ desirous of pleasing, ತತ್ರೈವ to that place only, ಆನಾಯಯಾಮಾಸ was brought in.

Coming to know that Sumantra who is intimate to his father had arrived, Rama, in order to please him, commanded that he be escorted to that very place.
ತಂ ವೈಶ್ರವಣಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮುಪವಿಷ್ಟಂ ಸ್ವಲಙ್ಕೃತಮ್.

ದದರ್ಶ ಸೂತಃ ಪರ್ಯ್ಯಙ್ಕೇ ಸೌವರ್ಣೇ ಸೋತ್ತರಚ್ಛದೇ৷৷2.16.8৷৷

ವರಾಹರುಧಿರಾಭೇಣ ಶುಚಿನಾ ಚ ಸುಗನ್ಧಿನಾ.

ಅನುಲಿಪ್ತಂ ಪರಾರ್ಧ್ಯೇನ ಚನ್ದನೇನ ಪರನ್ತಪಮ್৷৷2.16.9৷৷

ಸ್ಥಿತಯಾ ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ವಾಲವ್ಯಜನಹಸ್ತಯಾ.

ಉಪೇತಂ ಸೀತಯಾಭೂಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ರಯಾ ಶಶಿನಂ ಯಥಾ৷৷2.16.10৷৷


ವೈಶ್ರವಣಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling Kubera (god of wealth), ಸ್ವಲಙ್ಕೃತಂ richly-covered, ವರಾಹರುಧಿರಾಭೇಣ red as the blood of a hog, ಶುಚಿನಾ of pure, ಸುಗನ್ಧಿನಾ with sweet fragrance, ಪರಾರ್ಧ್ಯೇನ excellent, ಚನ್ದನೇನ with sandalpaste, ಅನುಲಿಪ್ತಮ್ anointed, ಪರನ್ತಪಮ್ subduer of enemies, ಚಿತ್ರಯಾ (united) with star Chitra, ಶಶಿನಂ ಯಥಾ like the Moon, ಪಾರ್ಶ್ವತಃ by the side of, ಸ್ಥಿತಯಾ standing, ವಾಲವ್ಯಜನಹಸ್ತಯಾ a fan of yak's tail in hand, ಸೀತಯಾ ಚಾಪಿ Sita also, ಉಪೇತಮ್ was present, ಸೋತ್ತರಚ್ಛದೇ richly covered, ಸೌವರ್ಣೇ golden, ಪರ್ಯಙ್ಕೇ in the couch, ಉಪವಿಷ್ಟಮ್ sitting, ತಮ್ to him (Rama), ಸೂತಃ charioteer (Sumantra), ದದರ್ಶ beheld.

Sumantra beheld Rama, who resembled Kubera. Rama was sitting on a richly-covered golden couch, well-adorned and anointed with precious, pure, fragrant red sandalpaste the colour of which appeared like the blood of a hog. With Sita standing by his side with a fan of yak's tail in her hand Rama, the tormentor of foes,
looked like the Moon united with (the star) Chitra.
ತಂ ತಪನ್ತಮಿವಾದಿತ್ಯಮುಪಪನ್ನಂ ಸ್ವತೇಜಸಾ.

ವವನ್ದೇ ವರದಂ ವನ್ದೀ ವಿನಯಜ್ಞೋ ವಿನೀತವತ್৷৷2.16.11৷৷


ವಿನಯಜ್ಞಃ one who knows the art of modesty, ವನ್ದೀ panegyrist (Sumantra), ವಿನೀತವತ್ with humility, ಸ್ವತೇಜಸಾ with his own effulgence, ಉಪಪನ್ನಮ್ secured, ತಪನ್ತಮ್ shining, ಆದಿತ್ಯಮ್ ಇವ like the Sun, ವರದಮ್ conferor of boons, ತಮ್ that Rama, ವವನ್ದೇ made reverential salutation.

Sumantra who knew the art of modesty, made humble, reverential salutation to Rama the granter of boons, shining like the Sun with his own effulgence.
ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಸ್ಸುಮುಖಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ವಿಹಾರಶಯನಾಸನೇ.

ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಮುವಾಚೇದಂ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೋ ರಾಜಸತ್ಕೃತಃ৷৷2.16.12৷৷


ರಾಜಸತ್ಕೃತಃ honoured by the king (Dasaratha), ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಃ Sumantra, ವಿಹಾರಶಯನಾಸನೇ on a couch , ಸುಮುಖಮ್ charming countenance, ರಾಜಪುತ್ರಮ್ prince, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಪ್ರಾಞ್ಜಲಿಃ with folded palms, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ said.

On seeing Rama of charming countenance relaxing on a couch, Sumantra, honourable to the king (Dasaratha) said these words with folded palms.
ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಸುಪ್ರಜಾ ರಾಮ! ಪಿತಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮಿಚ್ಛತಿ.

ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ ಸಹ ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಗಮ್ಯತಾಂ ತತ್ರ ಮಾ ಚಿರಮ್৷৷2.16.13৷৷


ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಸುಪ್ರಜಾಃ worthy son of Kausalya, ರಾಮಃ O Rama, ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ queen, ಕೈಕೇಯ್ಯಾ ಸಹ along with Kaikeyi, ಪಿತಾ father, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಮ್ to see, ಇಚ್ಛತಿ wishes, ತತ್ರ there, ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ you may go, ಮಾ ಚಿರಮ್ do not delay.

O Rama, worthy son of Kausalya, your father along with queen Kaikeyi desires to see you.You may go there. Please do not delay.
ಏವಮುಕ್ತಸ್ತು ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟೋ ನರಸಿಂಹೋ ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ.

ತತಸ್ಸಮ್ಮಾನಯಾಮಾಸ ಸೀತಾಮಿದಮುವಾಚ ಹ৷৷2.16.14৷৷


ತತಃ after that, ಏವಮ್ thus, ಉಕ್ತಃ spoken, ಮಹಾದ್ಯುತಿಃ of great lustre, ನರಸಿಂಹಃ lion among men, ಸಂಹೃಷ್ಟಃ was immensely pleased, ಸಮ್ಮಾನಯಾಮಾಸ honoured him, ಸೀತಾಮ್ to Sita, ಇದಮ್ these words, ಉವಾಚ ಹ also spoke.

Highly lustrous Rama ,the lion among men, when thus spoken to, was immensely pleased and extending due honour to him said to Sita:
ದೇವಿ! ದೇವಶ್ಚ ದೇವೀ ಚ ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ ಮದನ್ತರೇ.

ಮನ್ತ್ರಯೇತೇ ಧೃವಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿದಭಿಷೇಚನಸಂಹಿತಮ್৷৷2.16.15৷৷


ದೇವಿ O devi (Sita), ದೇವಶ್ಚ the king, ದೇವೀ ಚ also queen, ಸಮಾಗಮ್ಯ having met together, ಮದನ್ತರೇ about me, ಅಭಿಷೇಚನಸಂಹಿತಮ್ relating to the consecration, ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್ something, ಮನ್ತ್ರಯೇತೇ are consulting, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ is certain.

O Sita, I am sure the king and queen are discussing something relating to my consecration.
ಲಕ್ಷಯಿತ್ವಾ ಹ್ಯಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಂ ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮಾ ಸುದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ.

ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯತಿ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಮದರ್ಥಮಸಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ৷৷2.16.16৷৷


ಅಸಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ dark-eyed, ಸುದಕ್ಷಿಣಾ highly favoured, ಪ್ರಿಯಕಾಮಾ desiring the welfare (of the king), ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಮ್ intention, ಲಕ್ಷಯಿತ್ವಾ having perceived, ರಾಜಾನಮ್ to the king, ಮದರ್ಥಮ್ for my purpose, ಸಞ್ಚೋದಯತಿ is urging.

Dark-eyed and highly favoured well-wisher of the king (Kaikeyi) is urging him for my sake in view of his intention.
ಸಾ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾ ಮಹಾರಾಜಂ ಹಿತಕಾಮಾನುವರ್ತಿನೀ.

ಜನನೀ ಚಾರ್ಥಕಾಮಾ ಮೇ ಕೇಕಯಾಧಿಪತೇಸ್ಸುತಾ৷৷2.16.17৷৷


ಕೇಕಯಾಧಿಪತೇಃ ಸುತಾ daughter of the king of Kekaya (Kaikeyi), ಜನನೀ ಚ my mother also, ಸಾ she, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟಾ being extremely happy, ಹಿತಕಾಮಾ desirous of (my) benefit, ಮಹಾರಾಜಮ್ to the king, ಅನುವರ್ತಿನೀ following, ಮೇ my, ಅರ್ಥಕಾಮಾ seeks my well-being.

My mother, daughter of the king of Kekaya, knows the king's intention and, heppy to do me good, seeks my well-being.
ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ಖಲು ಮಹಾರಾಜೋ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಿಯಯಾ ಸಹ.

ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಂ ಪ್ರಾಹಿಣೋದ್ದೂತಮರ್ಥಕಾಮಕರಂ ಮಮ৷৷2.16.18৷৷


ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ the queen, ಪ್ರಿಯಯಾ ಸಹ with his dear wife, ಮಹಾರಾಜಃ king, ದಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ fortunately, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರಮ್ Sumantra, ದೂತಮ್ as messenger, ಮಮ my, ಅರ್ಥಕಾಮಕರಮ್ accomplishing artha and kama, ಪ್ರಾಹಿಣೋತ್ has sent.

It is our fortune that the king and his dear queen have sent Sumantra as messenger who is interested in my prosperity and pleasure.
ಯಾದೃಶೀ ಪರಿಷತ್ತತ್ರ ತಾದೃಶೋ ದೂತ ಆಗತಃ.

ಧ್ರುವಮದ್ಯೈವ ಮಾಂ ರಾಜಾ ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ৷৷2.16.19৷৷


ತತ್ರ there, ಯಾದೃಶೀ of which sort, ಪರಿಷತ್ council, ತಾದೃಶಃ like that, ದೂತಃ messenger, ಆಗತಃ has arrived, ಧ್ರುವಮ್ assuredly, ಅದ್ಯೈವ this very day, ರಾಜಾ king, ಮಾಮ್ me, ಯೌವರಾಜ್ಯೇ as heir-apparent, ಅಭಿಷೇಕ್ಷ್ಯತಿ will consecrate.

There worthy of the council of the king and the queen, a befitting messenger has come. Assuredly the king will consecrate me as heir-apparent this very day.
ಹನ್ತ! ಶೀಘ್ರಮಿತೋ ಗತ್ವಾ ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಚ ಮಹೀಪತಿಮ್.

ಸಹ ತ್ವಂ ಪರಿವಾರೇಣ ಸುಖಮಾಸ್ವ ರಮಸ್ವ ಚ৷৷2.16.20৷৷


ಹನ್ತ! what a joy!, ಇತಃ from here, ಶೀಘ್ರಂ immediately, ಗತ್ವಾ having gone, ಮಹೀಪತಿಮ್ to the king,
ದ್ರಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಚ shall see, ತ್ವಮ್ you, ಪರಿವಾರೇಣ ಸಹ along with attendants, ಸುಖಮ್ happily, ಆಸ್ವ remain, ರಮಸ್ವ ಚ rejoice.

I shall go from here immediately and see the king. Remain here happily and rejoice with your maids.
ಪತಿಸಮ್ಮಾನಿತಾ ಸೀತಾ ಭರ್ತಾರಮಸಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ.

ಆದ್ವಾರಮನುವವ್ರಾಜ ಮಙ್ಗಲಾನ್ಯಭಿದಧ್ಯುಷೀ৷৷2.16.21৷৷


ಪತಿಸಮ್ಮಾನಿತಾ highly esteemed by her husband, ಅಸಿತೇಕ್ಷಣಾ having dark eyes, ಸೀತಾ Sita, ಮಙ್ಗಲಾನಿ auspicious events, ಅಭಿದಧ್ಯುಷೀ reflecting, ಭರ್ತಾರಮ್ husband, ಆದ್ವಾರಮ್ up to the entrance, ಅನುವವ್ರಾಜ followed.

Reflecting over the auspicious event, the dark-eyed Sita who is highly esteemed by her husband, followed him up to the entrance, (saying):
ರಾಜ್ಯಂ ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿರ್ಜುಷ್ಟಂ ರಾಜಸೂಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್.

ಕರ್ತುಮರ್ಹತಿ ತೇ ರಾಜಾ ವಾಸವಸ್ಯೇವ ಲೋಕಕೃತ್৷৷2.16.22৷৷


ರಾಜಾ the king (Dasaratha), ದ್ವಿಜಾತಿಭಿಃ by brahmins, ಜುಷ್ಟಂ resorted to, ರಾಜಸೂಯಾಭಿಷೇಚನಮ್ 'Rajasuya' sacrifice at the time of consecration, ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ kingdom, ತೇ you, ಲೋಕಕೃತ್ the creater of the world (lord Brahma), ವಾಸವಸ್ಯೇವ like Indra, ಕರ್ತುಮ್ to bestow, ಅರ್ಹತಿ deserves.

The king will bestow upon you, like the creator of the world (Brahma) bestowing on Indra, the kingdom served by brahmins who are fit to perform 'Rajasuya' sacrifice at the time of consecration.
ದೀಕ್ಷಿತಂ ವ್ರತಸಮ್ಪನ್ನಂ ವರಾಜಿನಧರಂ ಶುಚಿಮ್.

ಕುರಙ್ಗಶೃಙ್ಗಪಾಣಿಂ ಚ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ ತ್ವಾಂ ಭಜಾಮ್ಯಹಮ್৷৷2.16.23৷৷

of an antelope in your hand, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ looking, ಅಹಮ್ I, ಭಜಾಮಿ adore.

I shall be delighted to see you initiated and engaged in the observance of the vow made pure, wearing excellent deer-skin and carrying the horns of an antelope in your hand.
ಪೂರ್ವಾಂ ದಿಶಂ ವಜ್ರಧರೋ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ಪಾತು ತೇ ಯಮಃ.

ವರುಣಃ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಮಾಶಾಂ ಧನೇಶಸ್ತೂತ್ತರಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್৷৷2.16.24৷৷


ತೇ your, ಪೂರ್ವಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್ in the east, ವಜ್ರಧರಃ the wielder of thunder (Indra), ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ in the south, ಯಮಃ Yama, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಮಾಶಾಮ್ in the west, ವರುಣಃ Varuna, ಉತ್ತರಾಂ ದಿಶಂ ತು in the north, ಧನೇಶಃ Kubera, ಪಾತು may protect you.

May Indra protect you on the east, Yama in the south, Varuna in the west and Kubera in the north.
ಅಥ ಸೀತಾಮನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ ಕೃತಕೌತುಕಮಙ್ಗಲಃ.

ನಿಶ್ಚಕ್ರಾಮ ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಸಹ ರಾಮೋ ನಿವೇಶನಾತ್৷৷2.16.25৷৷


ಅಥ thereafter, ಕೃತಕೌತುಕಮಙ್ಗಲಃ wearing auspicious ornaments, ರಾಮಃ Rama, ಸೀತಾಮ್ Sita, ಅನುಜ್ಞಾಪ್ಯ taking leave of, ಸುಮನ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಸಹ along with Sumantra, ನಿವೇಶನಾತ್ from his palace, ನಿಶ್ಚಕ್ರಾಮ departed.

Adorned in auspicious ornaments, Rama took leave of Sita and departed from his palace accompanied by Sumantra.
ಪರ್ವತಾದಿವ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮ್ಯ ಸಿಂಹೋ ಗಿರಿಗುಹಾಶಯಃ.

ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಂ ದ್ವಾರಿಸೋಪಶ್ಯತ್ಪ್ರಹ್ವಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಂ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್৷৷2.16.26৷৷


ಸಃ he, ಗಿರಿಗುಹಾಶಯಃ resting in a mountain cave, ಸಿಂಹಃ lion, ಪರ್ವತಾತ್ ಇವ like from a mountain,
ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮ್ಯ having come out of his palace, ದ್ವಾರಿ at the entrance, ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ standing, ಪ್ರಹ್ವಾಞ್ಜಲಿಪುಟಮ್ bowing with folded hands, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಮ್ Lakshmana, ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ saw.

Like a lion living in a mountain cave and coming out of it, Rama while exiting, saw Lakshmana at the entrance bowing with folded hands.
ಅಥ ಮಧ್ಯಮಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಯಾಂ ಸಮಾಗಚ್ಛತ್ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನೈಃ.

ಸ ಸರ್ವಾನರ್ಥಿನೋ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಿನನ್ದ್ಯ ಚ৷৷2.16.27৷৷

ತತಃ ಪಾವಕಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮಾರುರೋಹ ರಥೋತ್ತಮಮ್.

ವೈಯಾಘ್ರಂ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರೋ ರಾಜತಂ ರಾಜನನ್ದನಃ৷৷2.16.28৷৷


ಅಥ after that, ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಃ tiger among men, ಸಃ he, ರಾಜನನ್ದನಃ son of the king (Rama), ಮಧ್ಯಮಕಕ್ಷ್ಯಾಯಾಂ in the middle courtyard, ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನೈಃ with friends, ಸಮಾಗಚ್ಛತ್ met, ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಅರ್ಥಿನಃ all of them eager to see him, ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ having seen, ಸಮೇತ್ಯ having met, ಪ್ರತಿನನ್ದ್ಯ ಚ having greeted them, ಪಾವಕಸಙ್ಕಾಶಮ್ resembling fire, ವೈಯಾಘ್ರಮ್ covered with tiger-skin, ರಾಜತಮ್ made of silver, ರಥೋತ್ತಮಮ್ best of chariots, ಆರುರೋಹ mounted.

Rama, the best among men, met all his friends in the middle courtyard. Having seen them all eager to see him, he approached and greeted them. Thereafter, he mounted the best silver chariot covered with tiger-skin and glowing like fire.
ಮೇಘನಾದಮಸಮ್ಬಾಧಂ ಮಣಿಹೇಮವಿಭೂಷಿತಮ್.

ಮುಷ್ಣನ್ತಮಿವ ಚಕ್ಷೂಂಷಿ ಪ್ರಭಯಾ ಸೂರ್ಯವರ್ಚಸಮ್৷৷2.16.29৷৷

ಕರೇಣುಶಿಶುಕಲ್ಪೈಶ್ಚ ಯುಕ್ತಂ ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ.

ಹರಿಯುಕ್ತಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷೋ ರಥಮಿನ್ದ್ರ ಇವಾಶುಗಮ್৷৷2.16.30৷৷

ಪ್ರಯಯೌ ತೂರ್ಣಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ರಾಘವೋ ಜ್ವಲಿತಶ್ಶ್ರಿಯಾ.


ಶ್ರಿಯಾ with splendour, ಜ್ವಲಿತಃ dazzling, ರಾಘವಃ descendant of the Raghu race (Rama), ಮೇಘನಾದಮ್ sound of cloud (thunder), ಅಸಮ್ಬಾಧಮ್ spacious, ಮಣಿಹೇಮವಿಭೂಷಿತಂ decorated with gold and gems, ಪ್ರಭಯಾ with brilliance, ಚಕ್ಷೂಂಷಿ eyes, ಮುಷ್ಣನ್ತಮಿವ dazzling, ಸೂರ್ಯವರ್ಚಸಂ lusture of the Sun, ಕರೇಣುಶಿಶುಕಲ್ಪೈ: looking like young elephants, ಪರಮವಾಜಿಭಿಃ with excellent horses, ಯುಕ್ತಮ್ harnessed, ಆಶುಗಮ್ swift-moving, ರಥಮ್ chariot, ಸಹಸ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ thousand-eyed, ಇನ್ದ್ರಃ Indra, ಹರಿಯುಕ್ತಮ್ ಇವ harnessed by horses (of Indra), ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ mounted, ತೂರ್ಣಮ್ swiftly, ಪ್ರಯಯೌ went.

The sound emanating from the chariot resembled the thunder. The spacious chariot was decorated with gold and gems which dazzled the eyes as though they shed the lustre of the Sun. The swift-moving chariot was harnessed by excellent horses as if they were young elephants. Like the thousand-eyed Indra, Rama, ablaze with royal splendour, mounted this chariot and sped away.
ಸ ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯ ಇವಾಕಾಶೇ ಸ್ವನವಾನಭಿನಾದಯನ್৷৷2.16.31৷৷

ನಿಕೇತಾನ್ನಿರ್ಯಯೌ ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ಮಹಾಭ್ರಾದಿವ ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾಃ.


ಆಕಾಶೇ in the sky, ಪರ್ಜನ್ಯ ಇವ like storm-cloud, ಸ್ವನವಾನ್ sonorous, ಶ್ರೀಮಾನ್ magnificent, ಸಃ he (that chariot), ಅಭಿನಾದಯನ್ making sound, ಮಹಾಭ್ರಾತ್ from a huge cloud, ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಾ ಇವ like moon, ನಿಕೇತಾತ್ from the residence, ನಿರ್ಯಯೌ departed.

The magnificent chariot, rumbling like a storm-cloud in the sky, emerged from (Rama's) residence like the Moon peeping through a huge cloud.
ಛತ್ರಚಾಮರಪಾಣಿಸ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣೋ ರಾಘವಾನುಜಃ৷৷2.16.32৷৷

ಜುಗೋಪ ಭ್ರಾತರಂ ಭ್ರಾತಾ ರಥಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಪೃಷ್ಠತಃ.


ರಾಘವಾನುಜಃ Rama's younger brother, ಭ್ರಾತಾ brother, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಃ Lakshmana, ಛತ್ರಚಾಮರಪಾಣಿಃ holding an umbrella and a fan made of yak's tail in his hand, ಪೃಷ್ಠತಃ at the rear, ರಥಮ್ the chariot, ಆಸ್ಥಾಯ having mounted, ಭ್ರಾತರಮ್ brother, ಜುಗೋಪ guarded.

Holding an umbrella and a fan made of yak's tail in his hand Lakshmana boarded the chariot at the rear, guarding his brother.
ತತೋ ಹಲಹಲಾಶಬ್ದಸ್ತುಮುಲಸ್ಸಮಜಾಯತ৷৷2.16.33৷৷

ತಸ್ಯ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮಮಾಣಸ್ಯ ಜನೌಘಸ್ಯ ಸಮನ್ತತಃ.


ತತಃ then, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ all around, ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಮಮಾಣಸ್ಯ departing, ತಸ್ಯ that (chariot's), ಜನೌಘಸ್ಯ of the multitude of people, ತುಮುಲಃ tumultuous, ಹಲಹಲಾಶಬ್ದಃ roaring sound, ಸಮಜಾಯತ emanated.

As it (the chariot) was passing out, a tumultuoas roar emanated from the multitude of people all around.
ತತೋ ಹಯವರಾ ಮುಖ್ಯಾ ನಾಗಾಶ್ಚ ಗಿರಿಸನ್ನಿಭಾಃ৷৷2.16.34৷৷

ಅನುಜಗ್ಮುಸ್ತದಾ ರಾಮಂ ಶತಶೋಥ ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ.


ತತಃ afterwards, ಮುಖ್ಯಾಃ chiefs, ಹಯವರಾಃ excellent horses, ಗಿರಿಸನ್ನಿಭಾಃ resembling hills in size, ನಾಗಾಶ್ಚ elephants, ಶತಶಃ in hundreds, ಸಹಸ್ರಶಃ in thousands, ತದಾ then, ರಾಮಮ್ Rama, ಅನುಜಗ್ಮುಃ followed.

Then the chief commanders riding the best of the horses and elephants, resembling hills in size, followed Rama in their hundreds and thousands.
ಅಗ್ರತಶ್ಚಾಸ್ಯ ಸನ್ನದ್ಧಾಶ್ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಭೂಷಿತಾಃ৷৷2.16.35৷৷

ಖಡ್ಗಚಾಪಧರಾಶ್ಶೂರಾ ಜಗ್ಮುರಾಶಂಸವೋ ಜನಾಃ.


ಸನ್ನದ್ಧಾಃ equipped with armour, ಚನ್ದನಾಗರುಭೂಷಿತಾಃ anointing their bodies with sandalpaste and agaru, ಖಡ್ಗಚಾಪಧರಾಃ holding swords and bows, ಆಶಂಸವಃ heralds, ಶೂರಾಃ ಜನಾಃ soldiers, ಅಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಅಗ್ರತಃ ahead of him, ಜಗ್ಮುಃ followed.

Soldiers, anointing their bodies with pastes of sandal and aloe wood, equipped with armour and holding swords and bows, went ahead heralding his (Rama's) arrival.
ತತೋ ವಾದಿತ್ರಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ ಸ್ತುತಿಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ ವನ್ದಿನಾಮ್৷৷2.16.36৷৷

ಸಿಂಹನಾದಾಶ್ಚ ಶೂರಾಣಾಂ ತದಾ ಶುಶ್ರುವಿರೇ ಪಥಿ.


ತತಃ afterwards, ತದಾ then, ಪಥಿ on the way, ವಾದಿತ್ರಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ sounds of musical instruments, ವನ್ದಿನಾಮ್ of panegyrists, ಸ್ತುತಿಶಬ್ದಾಶ್ಚ songs of eulogy, ಶೂರಾಣಾಮ್ warriors', ಸಿಂಹನಾದಾಶ್ಚ
roarings, ಶುಶ್ರುವಿರೇ were heard.

At that time, sounds of musical instruments and songs of eulogy by panegyrists, roarings of warriors were heard on the way.
ಹರ್ಮ್ಯವಾತಾಯನಸ್ಥಾಭಿರ್ಭೂಷಿತಾಭಿಸ್ಸಮನ್ತತಃ৷৷2.16.37৷৷

ಕೀರ್ಯಮಾಣ ಸ್ಸುಪುಷ್ಪೌಘೈರ್ಯಯೌ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಭಿರರಿನ್ದಮಃ.


ಅರಿನ್ದಮಃ subduer of enemies, ಹರ್ಮ್ಯವಾತಾಯನಸ್ಥಾಭಿಃ standing at the windows of their mansions ಭೂಷಿತಾಭಿಃ well-attired, ಸ್ತ್ರೀಭಿಃ by women, ಸಮನ್ತತಃ from every side, ಸುಪುಷ್ಪೌಘೈ: with heaps of flowers, ಕೀರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ being showered, ಯಯೌ proceeded.

Rama, the subduer of enemies, proceeded while the well-attired women standing at the windows of their mansions showered heaps of flowers on him from every side.
ರಾಮಂ ಸರ್ವಾನವದ್ಯಾಙ್ಗ್ಯೋ ರಾಮಪಿಪ್ರೀಷಯಾ ತತಃ৷৷2.16.38৷৷

ವಚೋಭಿರಗ್ಯ್ರೈರ್ಹರ್ಮ್ಯಸ್ಥಾ ಕ್ಷಿತಿಸ್ಥಾಶ್ಚ ವವನ್ದಿರೇ.


ತತಃ thereafter, ಹರ್ಮ್ಯಸ್ಥಾಃ standing on the top of the houses, ಕ್ಷಿತಿಸ್ಥಾಶ್ಚ standing on the ground also, ಸರ್ವಾನವದ್ಯಾಙ್ಗ್ಯ: women of faultless limbs, ರಾಮಪಿಪ್ರೀಷಯಾ to propitiate Rama, ಅಗ್ಯ್ರೈಃ charming, ವಚೋಭಿಃ with words, ರಾಮಂ to Rama, ವವನ್ದಿರೇ paid homage.

Women with faultless limbs standing on their house-tops as well as on the ground paid their homage with charming words in order to propitiate Rama.
ನೂನಂ ನನ್ದತಿ ತೇ ಮಾತಾ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾಮಾತೃನನ್ದನ!৷৷2.16.39৷৷

ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ ಸಿದ್ಧಯಾತ್ರಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮವಸ್ಥಿತಮ್.


ಮಾತೃನನ್ದನ! O Joy of your mother, (Rama), ಸಿದ್ಧಯಾತ್ರಂ whose journey has become fruitful, ಪಿತ್ರ್ಯಂ ರಾಜ್ಯಮ್ the father's kingdom, ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ secured, ತ್ವಾಮ್ you, ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತೀ seeing, ತೇ your, ಮಾತಾ
mother, ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಾ Kausalya, ನೂನಮ್ surely, ನನ್ದತಿ will be delighted.

O Joy of your mother (Rama)! on seeing you having successfully acomplished the purpose of your journey (life) by securing your father's kingdom, your mother Kausalya will surely be delighted.
ಸರ್ವಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀಭ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಸೀತಾಂ ಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀ ವರಾಮ್৷৷2.16.40৷৷

ಅಮನ್ಯನ್ತ ಹಿ ತಾ ನಾರ್ಯೋ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಹೃದಯಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್.


ತಾಃ those, ನಾರ್ಯಃ women, ರಾಮಸ್ಯ Rama's, ಹೃದಯಪ್ರಿಯಾಮ್ dear to the heart, ಸೀತಾಮ್ to Sita, ಸರ್ವಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀಭ್ಯ: more than all women, ವರಾಮ್ the best, ಸೀಮನ್ತಿನೀಮ್ as lady, ಅಮನ್ಯನ್ತ ಹಿ considered.

Those women considered Sita who was dear to the heart of Rama the best among all women.
ತಯಾ ಸುಚರಿತಂ ದೇವ್ಯಾ ಪುರಾ ನೂನಂ ಮಹತ್ತಪಃ৷৷2.16.41৷৷

ರೋಹಿಣೀವ ಶಶಾಙ್ಕೇನ ರಾಮಸಂಯೋಗಮಾಪ ಯಾ.


ತಯಾ that Sita, ಶಶಾಙ್ಕೇನ with the Moon, ರೋಹಿಣೀ ಇವ like Rohini, ರಾಮಸಂಯೋಗಮ್ union with Rama, ಆಪ got, ಯಾ such, ದೇವ್ಯಾ by (Sita) devi, ಪುರಾ in the past, ನೂನಮ್ assuredly, ಮಹತ್ great, ತಪಃ austerities, ಸುಚರಿತಮ್ peformed.

Sita was united with Rama like Rohini with the Moon surely because of her great austerities performed in the past. (They observed).
ಇತಿ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಶೃಙ್ಗೇಷು ಪ್ರಮದಾಭಿರ್ನರೋತ್ತಮಃ৷৷2.16.42৷৷

ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಸ್ಥಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ವಾಚ ಉದಾಹೃತಾಃ.

ಆತ್ಮಸಂಪೂಜನೈ ಶೃಣ್ವನ್ ಯಯೌ ರಾಮೌ ಮಹಾಪಥಮ್৷৷2.16.43৷৷


ರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗಸ್ಥಃ along the highway, ನರೋತ್ತಮಃ best among men, (Rama), ಇತಿ thus, ಪ್ರಾಸಾದಶೃಙ್ಗೇಷು standing on the top of their buildings, ಪ್ರಮದಾಭಿಃ by women, ಉದಾಹೃತಾ: uttered, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಃ ವಾಚಃ pleasing words, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard, ಆತ್ಮಸಂಪೂಜನೈ their admiration of himself ಶ್ರುಣ್ವನ್ having heard ಯಯೌ proceeded ರಾಮಃ Rama ಮಹಾಪಥಮ್ the highway

Rama, the best among men, while riding along the highway overheard the pleasing words uttered by women standing on the elevation of their buildings. Thus hearing his own praise Rama proceeded along the highway.
ಸ ರಾಘವಸ್ತತ್ರ ಕಥಾಪ್ರಪಞ್ಚಾನ್

ಶುಶ್ರಾವ ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ ಸಮಾಗತಸ್ಯ.

ಆತ್ಮಾಧಿಕಾರಾ ವಿವಿಧಾಶ್ಚ ವಾಚಃ

ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟರೂಪಸ್ಯ ಪುರೋ ಜನಸ್ಯ৷৷2.16.44৷৷


ತದಾ then, ಸಃ that, ರಾಘವಃ Rama, ತತ್ರ there, ಸಮಾಗತಸ್ಯ having assembled, ಲೋಕಸ್ಯ people's, ಕಥಾ ಪ್ರಪಞ್ಚಾನ್ words of praise, ಶುಶ್ರಾವ heard, ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಟರೂಪಸ್ಯ great rejoicings, ಪುರೋಜನಸ್ಯ citizens, ಆತ್ಮಾಧಿಕಾರಾಃ concerning himself, ವಿವಿಧಾಃ different, ವಾಚಃ ಚ words (heard).

Rama heard these various words of admiration by people who had assembled there, and (witnessed) the rejoicings of the citizens.
ಏಷ ಶ್ರಿಯಂ ಗಚ್ಛತಿ ರಾಘವೋದ್ಯ

ರಾಜಪ್ರಸಾದಾದ್ವಿಪುಲಾಂ ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್.

ಏತೇ ವಯಂ ಸರ್ವ ಸಮೃದ್ಧಕಾಮಾ

ಯೇಷಾಮಯಂ ನೋ ಭವಿತಾ ಪ್ರಶಾಸ್ತಾ৷৷2.16.45৷৷


ರಾಜಪ್ರಸಾದಾತ್ by the king's grace, ವಿಪುಲಾಮ್ the earth, ಗಮಿಷ್ಯನ್ attaining, ಏಷಃ this, ರಾಘವಃ scion of the Raghus (Rama), ಅದ್ಯ today, ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್ wealth, ಗಚ್ಛತಿ is to acquire, ಯೇಷಾಮ್ who, ನಃ for us, ಅಯಮ್ this, ಪ್ರಶಾಸ್ತಾ protector, ಭವಿತಾ will become, ಏತೇ ವಯಮ್ all of us, ಸರ್ವಸಮೃದ್ಧಕಾಮಾಃ all our desires will be gratified.

This scion of the Raghus (Rama) is going to acquire the earth and the wealth today by the king's grace. He will be our protector and fulfil all our desires.
ಲಾಭೋ ಜನಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಯ ಯದೇಷ ಸರ್ವಂ

ಪ್ರಪತ್ಸ್ಯತೇ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮಿದಂ ಚಿರಾಯ.

ನ ಹ್ಯಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕಿಞ್ಚನ ಜಾತು ಕಶ್ಚಿ-

ತ್ಪಶ್ಯೇನ್ನ ದುಃಖಂ ಮನುಜಾಧಿಪೇಸ್ಮಿನ್৷৷2.16.46৷৷


ಏಷಃ this (Rama), ಯತ್ if, ಸರ್ವಮ್ entire, ಇದಂ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ this kingdom, ಚಿರಾಯ for a long time, ಪ್ರಪತ್ಸ್ಯತೇ obtains, ಅಸ್ಯ ಜನಸ್ಯ for these people, ಲಾಭಃ benefit, ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ this Rama, ಮನುಜಾಧಿಪೇ king, ಕಶ್ಚಿತ್ none, ಜಾತು never, ಅಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ unpleasant, ಕಿಞ್ಚನ even a little, ನ ಪಶ್ಯೇತ್ ಹಿ will not see, ದುಃಖಮ್ sorrow, ನ will not see.

If this Rama obtains the entire kingdom for a long time, it will be in the interest of the people. If he becomes king none will ever witness anything unpleasant or sad. (They observed).

ಸಃ he (Rama), ಘೋಷವದ್ಭಿಃ with sounds, ಮತಙ್ಗಜೈ: with intoxicated elephants, ಹಯೈಃ with horses, ಪುರಸ್ಸರೈಃ preceding, ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಕಸೂತಮಾಗಧೈಃ invocation of blessings by bards, ಮಹೀಯಮಾನಃ greatly honoured, ಪ್ರವರೈಃ ವಾದಕೈಃ by best musical performers, ಅಭಿಷ್ಟುತಃ being praised, ವೈಶ್ರವಣೋ ಯಥಾ like Kubera, ಯಯೌ went.

With bards, panegyrists and great musical performers invoking blessings and walking ahead, he (Rama) proceeded, like Kubera amid intoxicated elephants and horses.
